If you want a dynamic professor who is truly considerate of and involved in all aspects of your learning, take Dr. Banas! Before I took this course, I didn't really have much interest in communication. But Dr. Banas makes you care about it, because he does. In fact, I ended up changing my major! He is also very, very funny, easy-going, and HOT!!!
Banas is hilarious. Entertaining mass lecture, fun to go to even if you don't feel like taking notes. He is also very real. He is younger than most prof's so he has experiences we can relate to and understand. My boyfriend and I took it together, and we learned so much more about each other. Couples should take this class together, we loved it.
great teacher. hes absolutely hilarious. tests are slightly difficult but pay attention and you'll be fine. and he is very hott. lol
He will keep you interested in the lector. He walks around the stage and is sometimes very loud. You don't have to worry about falling asleep in this class.
Banas is hilarious but I don't really feel like I'm in class. It's more like a seminar on how to succeed in the world and in relationships. You do more in discussion. Make sure you pay attention, he gets pissed and will call you out and slightly makes fun of you. It's embarrassing. I mean it's all good though, he's nice to look at.
Dr Banas is absolutely hilarious! Most fun class I've taken in college. Very useful. I changed my major to comm because of him. Grades essays tough but he let us redo it after he gave feedback. Young so he can relate to the students. Has a story for everything! Willing to go off syllabus if we don't understand a concept. Made me want to go to class
He is a great professor! He was hilarious and even though attendance was not mandatory I loved going. Most of the actual work was done with the TA's in the disc classes, but they were great as well!
Amazing lecturer. He is hilarious, and has funny stories that always tie into his lectures. All work is done in discussion with TA's, but it is not difficult. I only missed class once, and attendance isn't required. LOVED him. and he is really cute
He is hilarious. Going to his lectures are always like going to a stand up comedy performance. Attendance is not mandatory, but you will not get an A in his class if you don't got. 1/3 of his tests come from the lecture.
He makes class enjoyable. Alot of people struggled with his tests, average was in the 60% range each time. He writes the tests, not the TAs. You will need your book [half of the exam comes from it], to attend class, and to take good notes to make an A. He gives you a textbook study guide with only material that will be covered in the test.
He is Hilarious. Go to his Lecture because half of the test is what he says in the lecture, and its not in the book. He tells stories that are so funny. The tests are hard, but I never studied except the night before. I made a B in the class, but if you put in more effort, you will make an A. Take his class he is very entertaining.
Dr. Banas is dynamic and fun, and you can tell he really loves what he's teaching. He's got a super dirty mouth, which annoys me & makes it feel like he's trying too hard, but if you can look past that, he's great. ....and I'm just gonna go with the rest of the comments & admit it...he's kinda hot. LOL
Loved this class! He is a great teacher and it is a really interesting and fun subject. I am minoring in communication now b/c i love it so much. You should go to the lectures b/c the material will be on the test. Not a hard subject but you should study! You can get an A if you don't blow off the class. Overall, a great class to take!
Going to Professor Banas class was like attending a comedy show. He made lectures interesting and fun. One thing he doesnt tolerate is cellphones so dont let him catch you with it! Go to his lectures because a lot of what he talks about it on the test! Overall easy class just take notes and study.
Persuasive Communication Campaigns is the best class I have ever taken. Dr. Banas is an amazing professor who goes the extra mile to make class fun and educational. As a new graduate student I was not sure what to expect, Dr. Banas helped ease my anxiety and make the class a successful experience. You should definitely take his class if you can!
He is a very good lecturer, though the textbook is mandatory for the discussion classes with the TAs.
Banas is a wonderful professor that knows how to connect to his students. Don't let his light-hearted, comedic lectures be an indicator of the tests for you though. The tests are quite difficult and do require a lot of studying. He is very funny and I enjoyed his lectures. 50% of your test material will be from his lectures.
Dr. Banas is very down to earth and extremely entertaining. Normally I lose interest during class and either shop online or surf facebook - NOT during his class. I loved it! Plus he is good eye candy!!
Banas' humor and enthusiasm made this class enjoyable and interesting. Top shelf all around.
One of the best professors ever! He tells really funny stories and you will never get bored! He is entertaining and loves to make class exciting! He uses powerpoints and speaks through a microphone so dont be worried about hearing or seeing! Great class!
His lectures are great. He knows how to blend in enough humor and side-stories to keep it interesting but still gets through the material. As long as you pay attention in his lecture , you shouldn't fail any of the tests. Definitely take COMM with him if you get the chance.
Banas is a good professor, it's obvious that he knows what he is teaching and is very passionate about it.However he is a very strict professor and is very tough. Go to lecture- take exstensive notes and be very actice in discusion and you should be fine. DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE OR TALK IN CLASS... trust me.
Banas will tell you if something is on the test. However, his tests are kinda difficult because they use alot of complex examples. He seems very approachable if you had a question.
He is very interesting and makes you want to attend class but the tests are extremely hard. Take extensive notes and study the key terms for every section.
I absolutely loved this class!Dr. Banas is a riveting professor, even when I was tired or sick, I went to lecture because it was so good. Very good communicator, and very humble. This class requires some effort, but not terribly difficult. Make sure to take him if you can, definitely my favorite class.
If you want to pass Communication do not take John Banas class! He is a horrible professor and has the worst attitude! He is not open to opinions in class even though he asks for them. He berates students and its awful! Worst professor I've ever had!!!!!
Banas loves himself. He's cocky and sometimes rude. Lectures are hilarious and worth going to, even if they're early, but he's intimidating and the TAs are typically useless because the material is sort of self-explanatory. However, if you don't understand it, he will look at you like you're stupid, so be ready for that or just keep it to yourself.
Dr. Banas will keep your attention through an entire lecture. He is extremely funny and helpful. He presents his material in a way that is easy to understand. Always go to lecture and bring your clicker. My clicker points bumped be from a C to a B. Also be prepared for hard tests. This is not a blow off class.
Very entertaining speaker, you will feel as though you are attending a comedy show as opposed to a lecture! His way of teaching is incredible and makes learning fun. You will not realize how much you are absorbing.
Loved this dude.
Very entertaining speaker. he will tell you specifically if something is on the test. You must attend the lectures though. Although he posts the ppowerpoints on D2L he is specifically ambiguous with the information so that you are forced to come to class. You have to read the entire textbook.
Professor Banas was very entertaining. He made sure you had a good time every time you come to class. His tests are pretty difficult and if you have a problem, do not go speak with him. He is not very considerate and is rude. Great Professor if you do not need to speak with him directly.
Banas is absolutely hilarious! You have to really pay attention though because there is content galore. And, yes, It is all on the test. All of it. The tests are brutal, but as long as you go to lecture and read the book, you'll get out fine. Don't use your phone (trust me, its not worth it).
Banas is fantastic. He is so enthusiastic during his lectures that I look forward to it every week. He is entertaining and knows his material. Yeah, his tests are hard, but if you go to class and pay attention and read, you'll do just fine. He does have a low BS tolerance, which you don't need to worry about if you're a courteous, active student.
Hilarious guy. Makes class interesting and the lecture is fun. A lot of dinky assignments for points here and there that can be hard to keep track of. Discussion isn't fun and you will find yourself enjoying Banas's lecture.
absolutely amazing lectures. but difficult tests. Only reason I did not get an A was I did not get high enough Bs on the test. Tests are more difficult than I always assumed. But i enjoyed the class all together. Clickers used a lot.
Dr. Banas was a great professor. He was very knowledgeable of what he was teaching. He really enjoyed the topics and made a huge effort to make class enjoyable.
Hilarious lecture teacher. It was the discussion sections that really killed. Go to the lecture!!! His stories are all of the test questions.
Great teacher! Don't expect it to be an easy A were you don't have to study. The midterm was hard and there are specific questions from his lectures (he will tell you which points will be on the test in class). He is hilarious but usually his jokes aren't helpful when it comes to learning the material.
Make sure to take your iClicker to every lecture. Banas is hilarious, but when he gives you a study guide, DON'T study it. Study all of your lecture notes, and when you take notes, be sure to write down specific examples that he uses because they WILL be on the test.
Banas has very funny lectures and always keeps you entertained. His tests are very application based and pretty hard, however the rest of the assignments are pretty easy and he gives you a lot of range with topics you might want to talk about. He uses clickers in his class rooms to take attendance.
Dr. Banas is a great professor. His lectures are hilarious and he really gets you interested in the subject. He takes attendance with iclickers so you have to go unless you want to lose points. He puts material from his lectures on his tests as well. Really good class, highly suggest taking a class from him.
First off, take notes on your laptop it really helps when it comes to studying. Write down every example he gives because they WILL be on the test! He is hilarious and will keep you entertained but beware missing lecture. He takes attendance with iclickers plus he teaches content that isn't in the book so basically it is a must to go.
Lecture material is on the two tests but i never went to lecture and still got a B in the class but its hard to do that. Overall all most of the stuff learned in that class is common sense stuff. You have to give a speech at the end of the semester in your discussion section so if you don't like talking in public be prepared for that.
Best professor I've had at OU
My favorite class that I've taken so far at OU. He made the lectures interesting and provided good examples. Takes attendance with iClickers and there is a separate discussion section as well. Definitely recommend class with him!
Dr. Banas is one of my top 5 favorite professors I've had at OU. He is hilarious, extremely qualified, and will keep you on your toes. Don't take this class expecting an easy "A." I had to read the entire textbook to feel confident in the material. That being said, I would still highly recommend him. I almost added COMM as a minor b/c of him.
Banas' Comm in Relationships class was one of my favorite classes I have ever taken at OU. Class was entertaining and insightful. There wasn't a textbook persay for the class but a book of hand picked articles that Banas had chosen to follow his criteria for the semester and keeping up with those articles is a MUST. Awesome teacher Interesting clas
Try's to be funny but fails. Curses a lot so if profanity offends you do not take this professor.
He is a great professor. He has a great sense of humor that keeps you very engaged. I will definitely miss his class next semester. His lectures are not boring and easy to sit through. Take his class!
He is the most fun prof I've ever had. His lectures are the highlight of my day. He tells stories as examples for what we are learning. Its easy to set your pencils down and sit back and listen to his funny stories but take notes on these stories. They WILL be on the test. The tests are tricky sometimes but not 2 bad if you pay attention 2 lecture.
Good professor but I feel like he has a weird superiority complex. I took Principles of Communication and got an A but he tries way too hard to make his class harder than it needs to be. He is very good at what he does but beware of strange test questions that are intentionally meant to trick you for no apparent reason.
Funny guy, though he swears a lot so fair warning. Class itself is pretty difficult, probably more than it needs to be, but not impossible to get the A either. Lectures are fairly interesting.
Banas is one of my favorite professors I've had. I looked forward to attending his lectures because he is so interesting and funny. The discussion section wasn't that difficult, but his exams are very difficult. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone.
This class was so much fun to go to, Banas is so funny and makes going to lecture worth it. A lot of the test questions are lecture based and they are very strict on i clickers so make sure you go to class. The exams were a lot harder than I expected.
He is pretty funny, but you do need to go to lecture and use the iclicker to get points as well as go to discussion. You can only miss 2 discussions without hurting your grade. Tests are a little hard and you need to write down the stories/examples he gives in lecture because they will be on the tests.
One of the most enjoyable professors I've ever had. He's so intelligent and teaches in a way that makes you want to keep learning. Also, Dr. Banas is one of the funniest people you will ever get a chance to hear speak. You're in for a treat with him as your prof!
easy lectures besides that mine was 9 am. only once a week. HAVE to go because his examples are on the tests. very funny and interesting guy, everybody loves him made 9am not as early. attendance is taken by iclicker every week.
It's an easy A if you do the work and pay attention. Make sure to write down any examples he gives, they're on the test. Banas is a good lecturer for the most part, sometimes he tries to be hip with the youth by referencing wu-tang or swearing. They take attendance with a $50 iclicker, the textbook was $100, but you can do the HW in the trial
Dr. Banas makes a Tuesday 9am lecture not so bad. Very funny and interesting lectures. Be sure to take note of examples in lectures as they ARE on the test. It is not an easy A nor a blow off at all, take it as seriously as any other course. Loved this class and professor.
i loved having banas! hes hilarious and easy to listen to, he actually makes you want to go to his lectures because hes so interesting/funny. his class is pretty easy. his tests are easy as long as you pay attention to what he says in his lectures. class isnt mandatory but they do take iclicker grades so it mandatory.
Dr. Banas is SO funny! The lectures went by so fast because he was so entertaining. The exams were a little but hard but as long as you pay attention in class and use the study guide and the book you will be fine.
Unless the class has changed drastically in the last year, all of the people down there rating the difficulty as a four are out of their minds. Show up to class, take decent notes (especially when you hear him cite a statistic), and you will be fine. Minimal studying required and the homework consists of Learnsmarts. Lectures are fairly enjoyable.
Super engaging and interesting to listen to. Loved his class although his TA's weren't the best about putting in grades or responding to emails.
Banas is the funniest professor I've ever had. He is great at teaching. You have to go to his lectures because there are clicker questions (12 pts each) and half the test are off his examples in class. He offer 2 pts of extra credit. The tests are VERY hard to perform well on but there is an end of the year presentation that can help make up for it
He is so funny and the workload is not very hard! Study for your tests and you will for sure pass.
I loved this class! I would actually look forward to a 9 AM lecture. His class is soooo funny and he definitely is passionate about the material he is teaching. The tests are hard but just study the lecture and the book and you will be fine
Mandatory is required with an iclicker question. He's hilarious and knows what he's talking about. His tests are kinda difficult but manageable. In the discussion class, you give a speech at the end of the year so if you aren't comfortable with giving a speech, would not recommend taking this class. Other than that, he was a cool professor.
super funny guy & makes lecture fun. only use book during discussion class. attendance is kinda mandatory but he gives 2 exemptions! attendance is taken by i clickers so u can just give it to your friend to put answers in for u if you're desperate. the i clicker answers aren't graded by accuracy just if u do them! hilarious guy definitely recommend
Really funny and makes lectures very enjoyable. He does require attendance through iclickers but doesn't grade the questions. You need to attend lecture because his tests are based on a lot of examples he uses in class, but the tests are usually pretty manageable and example based. He also offers 2% extra credit based on Sona surveys!!
Probably one of the best lecturing professors I have had. He is hilarious and involves as much of the lecture hall as he possibly can. His tests can be difficult if you blow them off but if you study and go to lecture youll be fine.
I love Banas. He is hilarious and you will relate to almost all of his stories.
Good professor, can be really vulgar in class but if that doesn't bother you he's a solid choice.
Banas was an incredible professor, and I would take him again in a second. He was hilarious and engaging, and had a very unique sense of humor. You need to attend the lectures, but I never even considered skipping because of how funny Banas is. He sometimes gets off track, but typically found a way to link it back to the subject he was discussing.
The best lectures! I didn't mind having this class at 9am just because it was actually interesting!
Banas will keep you entertained! He teaches the material well, and it is a very practical class. Take advantage of the extra credit opportunities, show up to class, and be prepared for trick questions on the exams and you will do good.
Super funny and makes the lectures and materials fun to learn. The tests were super hard and they require you to study a ton.
Banas is a great lecturer and professor; he is funny, teaches well, and keeps you engaged. Go to every lecture and every class discussion. Participate in discussion and do the reading before hand. The tests can be difficult so make sure to study well and take good notes. Take Banas if you get the chance, he makes it fun even if tests can be hard.
He's a great professor. Engaging, and knows how to keep the attention in the room. I actually looked forward to his lectures. Be aware, this class is normally full of freshmen who haven't washed out yet so you probably want to sit in the front to avoid having to deal with excessive talking. He tries to crack down on it, but it still happens.
I really like Dr. Banas at the beginning of the semester but since everything moved online he is absolutely the WORST professor I have ever had. Most o my professors this semester were considerate of what was going on but he would not let you even attempt to be thoughtful during this time. He had a very 'i dont care what is happening attitude."
Overall I really liked professor Banas, he kept lectures very engaging and made me want to attend his mass lectures. Something I found to be the most frustrating was the test we took, they were extremely difficult and at best I got a C on both midterms. The final was better and I felt the easiest of the three tests. Attendance is a must.
Banas is super funny and it makes going to 9am lectures a lot more bearable. As long as you go to class and go to your discussion section you will easily pass the class. I never took notes, just listened, and never felt unprepared for exams. He does take attendance points but drops the lowest two, so if you miss class a few times, you'll be fine.
The lectures are so painful to watch. It could be over two slides and the video will be an hour long. While the information is good on the actual slides, trying to watch a lecture from start to finish will make you want to do anything else.
I took this lecture class online this semester, which combined with my discussion section course. Dr. Banas' lectures are super funny and he tries his best to make them enjoyable to watch. The only assignment I had for this class was to submit "Ask Banas" questions once a week, which were super easy. There is also extra credit offered.
I was expecting better from this prof based on prior reviews. However, I felt that I took a class about this man and his stories rather than comm concepts. Ill be nice and maybe say that the virtual format definitely got away from him. He tries to appeal to younger people in class, but some stories definitely left me feeling a little icky.
Banas made class fun. He was eccentric and was a great story teller. He made the lecture relate to life. The lectures did not relate to the assignments or at least they did not cover the entire chapter. Assignments are a lot of common sense and the textbook is heavily used. Overall the lectures make the class worth it.
Dr. Banas is very well spoken, funny, and entertaining professor. He is lecture heavy and you must show up with a clicker for daily points. His exams are very hard, I took detailed notes in his course and the discussion portion and the exams still felt like it was a different class.
Banas is an interesting guy. Lecture was never dull, and I found it easy to stay engaged. However, the tests.. He makes some very difficult questions that have no place in an intro level class. Banas also has a large ego. Its almost like he is trying to impress freshman by cursing. Being almost 30, it was very cringey at times to listen to.
The material is actually interesting and Banas makes it even more interesting with his lectures. You have to do the readings to do good on quizzes/tests but if you show up and do the readings, this is not a hard class at all. I really enjoyed this class and what I learned from Banas.
Professor Banas is an amazing professor. His stories align with the material well and he keeps it fun and exciting. I looked forward to his lectures every week. While he does appeal to the younger students, I found no issue with this, even being an older student. I loved being in his class and found the material very relevant to life.
So funny and gives great lectures. Most work is done in discussion sections. Not an easy grader but if you pay attention and do your work you'll be good.
Professor Banas is absolutely hilarious and the only reason I will ever wake up early for class. His lectures were engaging and interesting and I highly recommend taking this class, its super easy.
One of my favorite profs, always enjoyed his lectures as they tended to be funny. Absolutely would recommend taking if considering.
Banas was an interesting guy at lectures, and was a cool professor, but the mandatory attendance was kinda dumb for it being a level 100 class. Also, the test are pretty hard as well, at least much harder than they should have been for being an easy class. Nonetheless, I would take this class again because I did enjoy the Discussions with my TA.
This class is really fun in mass lecture, the only complaint I have is that its only graded on a few things. So you can't really fall behind on anything at all.
Had Banas for an honors conspiracy theory course. He was a really fun and engaging professor with the class mainly a group discussion focused on the reading due that day. Two major papers that he graded fairly (low's were usually an 80). If you participate and go to class, it's a fun and easy A.
Dr. Banas was really funny and engaging in his lectures, although he makes you put your phones up and attendance is mandatory. Otherwise, would take the class again. It's pretty easy.
Dr. B was a great professor and has a great personality. However, his tests were EXTREMELY hard, with vague reviews. All of the readings are very dense. If you want to talk to him, ensure he is in a good mood. The tests tanked my grades. Attendance is mandatory. Gives out extra credit. Otherwise, I liked him personally, and he is very humorous.
Banas does a good job at keeping student entertained during his lectures. Attendance is mandatory and although communication seems like an easy subject his tests are a bit harder than expected. Learned this at my first exam but I learned as long as you complete the study guides and learn what's on it tests get easier. Also a lot of extra credit.
Dr. Banas gives amazing lectures. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and the contents of the course. However, I didn't particularly enjoy the discussion section.
Dr. Banas was so funny and made lectures really fun, although he is a stickler for no technology so get ready to bring a notebook and pen. The discussion on the other hand sucked, as the TA seemed to be lost on what was going on, making it a little bit of a drag to go to. Other than that the content was amazing with good lectures!
Banas tries to be funny and early in the morning nobody laughs so I feel bad. But he's cool, he gives good lectures but focus on the textbook for the tests and quizzes. He has lots of good stories and scenarios to share and his class goes by quick. If you pay attention, you'll get an A.
The class was harder than it needed it be. I understand it's an upper division Comm course, but this is by far the hardest UD Comm course I've taken. The mean for both tests were in the 50s. Even after studying for days I still barely passed. I find Banas to be borderline rude and his humor is often just annoying. Take him for 1113 but skip this.
Dr. Banas is a good guy w/ funny lectures (rants). Reading for this class is WAY more than expected, so don't think "Comm & Humor" means easy A. Allegedly the summer version is much easier. Get to perform a stand-up bit in class which is fun. Lots of reading. He was moody this semester. Good experience but tough.
Dr. Banas is a great professor; he tells a lot of jokes and tries to keep lecture engaging. Make sure you go to every lecture and write down almost everything he says because even the smallest details might be on the exam. He gives good tips for public speaking.
Awesome professor, he's hysterical! We were supposed to have 2 exams for this class but he got rid of them because of how much we were engaging during lecture so make sure you go and talk! Do the readings. You do have to do a stand-up routine at the end but he grades really easy the worst you can do is a B and that's if you don't try at all.
Please take his class!! I took his Honors section on Humor, and it was the best decision I have ever made. He's funny, caring, and wants you to critically think about the material. He wants his students to succeed, so if you need help, ask for it. Easily accessible outside class, not a tough grader, but participation DOES matter!!
I took this class in the Fall and Attendance was mandatory. Make sure to take notes because he frequently puts lecture material on the exam.
Extremely disrespectful to students in class. He has a strict no phone policy. One lecture, I was notified about a family emergency, so I looked at my phone for 2 minutes when Banas walked off the stage and yelled in my face. I had to get up and leave because it was mortifying. I emailed him explaining what happened and he never responded.
Absolutely awful. He has a whole "scholarly article" that he wrote and is cited in from our course packet, and it mainly talks about "appropriate humor" in a class setting and the guidelines on making students comfortable, yet he quite literally does the exact opposite even though this whole chapter is cited by him. so disrespectful/unprofessional
He literally stands up there for over an hour trying to crack jokes that are painfully awful..then gets mad when no one laughs. I get second hand embarrassment, he's so disrespectful too. Doesn't even follow the coursework or all the theories he's explaining he doesn't use in his teaching. Does this guy actually have a Doctorate? Need to fact check
