I took this class in Summer C of 2016. I got an "A-". It is true, this class is extremely difficult and you will not pass taking this course lightly. To pass this class I recommend using a tutoring service; flash cards to memorize vocabulary, formulas, and calculator prodedures (read tutorials). Do many practice problems. Lectures weren't useful.
FIN3404 was a very VERY hard class. Dr. Banko did a great job teaching the course and is more than reasonable. I would encourage future students to do TONS of old exam problems early and go in and talk to him as often as possible. Hard class, but really good professor. Really cool person to chat with and talk about your potential future in finance.
Banko is a great guy, but this class is SO INTENSE. He really tries to help you out to make sure you get the material, but blows through lecture without examples. I would NOT have passed this class without Study Edge (Chris rocks!) and all their reviews, practice questions, and mock exams. Definitely a necessity if you want to get a decent grade!
What a horrible teacher. Took it over Summer C and was a total waste of time and money. He doesn't teach - he talks at you. Test questions are many times harder than examples in the book, don't even try. My favorite saying was, we have too many finance majors so anyone who would normally get an A will get a C. FABULOUS
Ridiculously hard. Impossible to pass without study edge. His curve is literally a joke. The first exam test avg was a 51, I got a 70, I got a 2 point curve...
Probably the worst class/professor of your college career. You'll be taught how to do the work in Excel, but you can't use Excel on the exams. Why? Well, in his own words, he's "evil." His advice is to run up and down the stadium stairs then take practice exams. Very practical. I felt confident based on lectures and practice problems, failed exams.
This class is very challenging and has been made even more so on the instructions of the business school. Banko sincerely wants students to succeed, which is why he emphasizes his availability outside of class. His lecture style does not work alone for me personally - he just talks. Study Edge really helped me understand the math and concepts.
The class is really hard and the lectures do not help much. But I got Study Edge for this class and it was a lifesaver. Study Edge was able to teach me what I couldn't understand in lecture, and definitely was the reason I was able to get an A in the class.
Banko makes the finance exams extremely hard. He is tough and doesn't seem to care if his students are failing. I stopped going to lecture because he uses excel and we couldn't use that for the exams. Without Study Edge I would not have been able to do well in this class. It not only helped me understand things, but allowed me to study for the test
If you could have taken this class a year ago with Tapley and didn't, kick yourself, because you just made the biggest mistake of your college career. Lack of a formula sheet for 50-100 formulas, no more charts that used to be given. Unnecessarily horrible for fairly reasonable material. The free response will destroy your will to live.
He does a very poor job of teaching and translating that to the class. Make sure you spend hours of practice problems on this class. Blue exam are easier but still, 40 points in 60 min.
The course has changed so he rarely curves the traditional exams, so basically most people still fail. He has always been nice, respectable, and fair. Get study edge, but watch lectures at the beginning and around exams to find out about curves, etc. If you aren't a finance major, do method 2 of grading and just study and you will get the C+!!!
A notoriously tough class, Banko's lectures aren't too helpful, not as much as they could be. Supplementing his lectures with study edge was the best advice I got from a friend who previously took the class. They give study guides for each exam that really layout each problem type. And their chapter reviews are good for the homework.
Traditional exams are extremely difficult and tricky, unless you are a finance major and/or can understand every single old exam question ever, don't bother. His new orange and blue exams are do-able, but there are 40 questions in 60 mins, making it hard to finish in time. Memorize concepts, know the math well and you'll pass with a C
Day one, he is running a weed out course, The school wants less finance majors. He does not care if you pass or fail. All non-finance major, take the Blue and Orange exams, with the homework. You will get up to a C+ this way. Study the practice exam problems they will be what is used, just different numbers. Finance majors, God Bless.
Taking this course as a finance major was probably the most stressful thing I have put myself through. Had to get a B to keep my major and Banko informed the class that only 20% of finance majors would stay that way after we were through with the course. He got rid of formula sheets for a class with 50+ formulas... Minimal to 0 curve. BYEEEEE
my one tip for success in this class is Study Edge, the tutor that does the reviews is excellent. Banko doesn't really teach in class, he gives you the tools to study and thats about it. I stopped watching lectures after Exam 1 because I realized it was a waste of time. Instead, I watch the weekly reviews for study edge.
Definitely do study edge. This class is almost impossible to pass even studying for several weeks in advance, daily.
As someone stated before me, Definitely do study edge! Without it you can expect to fail, with it.... This class is still one of the worst I've taken at UF. I studied in excess of 7 hours a day (every day) for 2 weeks before exams 1 and 2, still had those exams scores be 40% and 60%. MOST DIFFICULT CLASS AT UF, sad because I like the material..
This is actually one of the hardest classes you will take as a business major. If you're a finance major who needs a B in the class, definitely prepare your schedule to study hours upon hours for this class. The only thing I would say is essential is to get Study Edge. Without the resources they provide for the class, I would definitely fail.
hardest class I've taken at UF, that being said, doable with Study Edge and practice problems, don't watch lectures, he just does stuff in excel (which you can't use for exams)
This class is very challenging, it requires students to be on pace at all points and to follow a strict number of examples to be doing for the exams. The best advice i would have to offer is to get study edge as it will allow you to be on top everything.
The Study-Edge thing that everyone uses, didn't fit into my schedule with my other classes, but everyone I know that used it won't be with me taking him again next semester. Lectures are useless as he doesn't teach what you need to know.
Please read. You do not need the book, you do not need to watch his lectures besides for announcements. Practice ALL the practice problems every single day (numerous times each if you can) up until the exam. Take all the practices quizzes/tests numerous times. Do ALL the extra credit. I did all this and got a D. That is how hard this class is.
The class in general is really hard and you have to be willing to put in the work. This semester he gave the option to boost your grade UP TO a 75. If you do all the practice questions available (which is a lot, believe me I know) then you'll be fine. If you don't practice you can't just try to figure it out as you go. Not as scary as people say.
Banko is tough, but gives you enough study material to get at least get a B if you put in the work. My biggest piece of advice is to do all of the practice questions and quizzes that he makes available. This takes a lot of time, but it is crucial to success. Going into this class you have to know that it requires a lot of time and work to do well.
Watch lectures at least once (he will sometimes tell you what will or will not be on the exam). Do study edge and keep up with the chapter reviews (they provide great tips and structure for your studying). Do as many old exam problems as you have time for (I probably spent around 30 hours doing practice problems the week before an exam). Got an A!
Good Luck! Class designed to fail students
Tips for an A: 1. Don't go to class. 2. STUDY EDGE - all of it. Go to both the live chapter reviews and exam reviews. 3. Practice Problems - Chris from Study Edge will give you all the tools you need. Trust this man. Do EVERY practice problem and mock exam he gives you. To get an A, you will need to MASTER the trickier concepts. Good luck!
Worst/hardest class I've ever taken at UF. He won't explain a concept because he wants you to "figure it out". Lectures are a waste of time. He does not present examples in an understandable way. He just reads from the powerpoint, which doesn't explain anything either. Exam questions are 10Xs harder than his "difficult" practice problems.
First and foremost - invest in StudyEdge from the beginning. Not skoolers. I actually did both and when I switched to StudyEdge my test grades got slightly better. That being said, this is a hard class, hardest I've taken and I only have 2 left to graduate. Do not think the "real deal" sample exam is anything like the real exam, its much harder.
This class is tough, but practice problems are key. Study Edge was my life as Chris does great chapter and exam reviews and provides packets full of problems for each module and extremely realistic mock exams. Do ALL of these, attend Study Edge reviews, use every resource they provide, and follow their structure! Takes time, but pays off in the end
How to pass: 1) GET STUDY EDGE. This is how I passed. Chris is my savior. 2) Do as many practice problems as possible. 3) Lectures are useless. Banko doesn't explain ANYTHING, and solves problems in Excel when he expects us to do it by hand. Do watch for announcements at the beginning. 4) Don't waste your money on the textbook. I never did MFL.
Yeah, this class is as hard as you've heard it is. Get skoolers or study edge.
Banko has redefined the "weed out" class, and by that I mean he simply does not bother to teach many of the most difficult topics. He solves problems in Excel, which is totally useless since you will not be able to use it on the exams. Don't bother with lecture/book, get study edge, and do as many practice problems as you possibly can.
- Don't go to class (It's a waste of time that you could have spent studying) -Study everyday -Do ALL practice problems -Study Edge is MANDATORY to pass
This guy is ridiculous. Flat out refuses to discuss exam grading or what questions may have been missed, even though he reserves right to test on those types of questions again. Honestly, doesn't care about you learning or not, just that he went through the motions. If majority of students are failing a test, is that not on the teacher?
This class is one of the hardest business courses offered at UF. I highly recommend using Study Edge if you want to be successful in this class. The class is made up of three exams therefore your exam grades are very important to your final grade. Chris is the tutor for this class from Study Edge and he does a really good job at making you prepared
Dr. Banko is one of the toughest professor s Ive had at UF. His lectures for intro to finance were not particularly useful toward learning the information on the exams. I ended up not watching them because it was time that wasnt going to help me do better. I watched Study Edge which helped me prepare for the exams and gave me the necessary info.
Tough class that requires attention to detail and thousands of practice problems. The only way i managed to do well was Study Edge. They made all the necessary arrangments of the material and practice problems. Good Luck!
This class is heavily influenced on exams if you want to do better than a C. Study edge was extremely helpful in preparing me for exams and keeping me on track. Definitely recommend Study Edge if you plan on doing well in this class. Good luck!
If I did not use study edge, there would have been no chance of me passing this class. The lectures don't really help on the exam, it's just a ton of practice problems, time and effort. So I spent nights doing old exams and watching study edge reviews.
There is no way I would have passed without using Study Edge. I recommend not wasting time watching his lectures, as they don't really help when it comes time for the exams. Doing many, many practice problems and mock exams with Study Edge saved my grade!
Total weed out class for Finance students. Super super hard but not impossible. I only used study Edge and used it religiously to be able to pass the class. The study Edge tutor does a really good job telling you everything you need to know and gives you a TON of practice problems. I highly recommend it if taking this course!
Dr. Banko really does try to make this a weed out class for non finance major. Although I am a Marketing major, I have been able to pass the class so far. He really does make you work for it but with Study Edge I've been doing great. Their practice problems and practice exams really do set you up for the real deal exams. Worth the cost.
Hardest class I've taken at UF, however it is doable. If you want to pass make sure you do all of the old exam problems. I spent at least two hours a day doing problems. The Real Deal is similar to the exam problem types, but the level of difficulty is so much harder on the exam. Study Edge helped me a lot as well. Get Study Edge and skip lecture.
Banko is the worst instructor ever and his class is just awful. I am a straight-A student, 4.0 GPA, working on honors thesis. I worked VERY HARD in this class, paid for tutoring, and sacrificed a lot of time studying, but my best was not good enough. I still ended up with a C. I am not a finance major, but good luck to those who need an A or B.
I don't recommend attending lectures. Study Edge is the way to go. Chris is great at explaining and organizing module concepts, practice problems, and exam reviews. He gave me everything that was necessary to pass the course. Ask him for a strategy when you feel overwhelmed!
This a tough class. His lectures can be interesting, but often times he goes through the problem using excel, which you can't use on exams. I started using Study Edge and that was a life saver. However, he is a very fair grader. If you just need to get through this class, he is very reasonable. If you are a non-finance major do the extra credit
Great professor, has great knowledge about what he teaches. You should do a lot of practice problems all the time. Its not that you can't pass if you don't get study edge or other tutoring service, it would probably help though. However, you can do it on your own
This class is not the easiest, however with the ability to earn 15 percent on your grade extra credit you can at least pass the class. His exams are really difficult for non-finance majors so make sure to work through as many old exam problems as you can. I'm glad I never have to take this class again, though Dr. Banko is a good guy.
As a finance major, I needed a B in this course. I finished the semester with a C, and I went into Banko's office hours to ask him what I can do to finish my next semester with a better grade. He was quick, to the point, and very willing to give me tips. He is not mean by any means, but he really needs to see students putting in the hard work.
I was a 4.0 student and I struggled to get a C+ in this class. I would do 200+ old exam questions before every exam and still struggled to pass. Do the extra credit but it will only get you to a C+. He will not curve anyone up to a B. Real deal was helpful but the tests were 10x harder than those questions. He teaches you all the problems in excel.
This class is tough but overall banko is a good guy. It doesn't seem that way on day 1 when he's threatening the class with failure. I strongly recommend using skoolers. They are an absolute necessity.
Banko really is a good guy. He makes sure he can do what he needs to to help his students, but the department makes him make finance a near impossible class. DO the extra credit if you are a non finance major. The tests are horrible but if I got through it, then it's possible as I do not have a math oriented brain.
He is nice and means well but awhile back UF came to him to make the class harder to weed out all of the Finance majors & ever since then its been impossible. Study Edge really saved me though Chris is always there to assist late at night/constant study hours at west. SE gives sooo many additional problems so you'll never run out of extra practice!
Dr. Banko is a nice guy, but his class is very difficult. It is a weed out for the finance program and it is rather difficult to get a B. He teaches the class through excel, but only lets you use a financial calculator on exams. That being said, I used Study Edge and would not have even come close to passing the class without it.
Hard class. Use study edge. Don't watch lectures. Grades are all exams. Exams are all math. Don't bother learning concepts if you just want a good grade. Do LOTS of study edge practice problems. If you want an A devote 3 hours, 5 days a week to studying. I just studied 2-3 nights before each exam so yeah... Banko is not the devil. Tests are fair.
Three exams make up your entire grade. I used study edge which has reviews for each module and then an exam review before each exam. The only way to pass this class is to do as many practice problems as possible before each test. Study edge does a good job highlighting Banko's usual tricks so you know how to handle them on exams.
I used Study Edge to get through this class. I didn't find his lectures helpful because he used excel to explain things you'd have to do by hand and never showed you how to do it by hand. He seems like a nice guy, but this is a weed out so he takes no prisoners. If you can take this somewhere else please help yourself and don't take it here. Run
Don't even try to go to lectures. Banko teaches on excel and we cant even use that on the test. The tests are extremely difficult. Its funny how getting a 50 on a test is hard to do. I used Skoolers and they teach it much better but it is still a difficult class. His extra credit seems good because its 15pts but it wont get you over a C.
Not an easy peasy class, but doable. Just STUDY. Practice. Practice. Practice. If you pay tutors outside of UF (study edge or skoolers) you can't magically expect an A++ You MUST PRACTICE. Also, Banko and his TA's are helpful. So, reach out to them. Wow, I feel like a parent now, so that's all.
This class was by far the hardest class I've ever taken at UF. I got an A in the class but I spent at least 4 hours a day studying, and probably about 12 hours a day the week leading up to the exam. My best advice is to use Skoolers. There is no way I would have gotten an A without them.
He makes Finance difficult so Finance majors can work harder for their degree. Unfortunately, all business majors have to take his class. He knows people hate him. Outside resources are a must. Hardest class i had to take at UF, despite having no interest in the field of finance. He closes faculty evaluations before anyone can complain.
Worse professor at the University of Florida. Makes the class ridiculously hard for no reason, especially for students who aren't finance majors. Finance at Florida is the worse class because of him and his lack of interest to help us actually learn or at least pass for trying our heads off. Don't expect a curve, don't expect him to help.
FIN 3403 was one of the toughest classes I have taken at UF, grades are based only on the exams, which adds more pressure to do well on them. The extra credit can only help you get a max grade of a C+, which isn't helpful if you're a finance major. Banko's lectures were not helpful to me, so I used Study Edge and made it out with the B.
Professor Banko's class was nearly impossible to pass. After the first exam of religiously watching lectures and reading the book I still only got a 65 on the first exam. After that I started using Study Edge and it was much more manageable and my grade improved significantly.
Honestly, you get what you put into this class. I thought all of the exams were, while challenging, very fair. Its up to students to do enough practice. Dr. Banko is clear about his expectations for the course and what will be covered on exams. I used Study Edge as well and they helped reinforce everything. Interesting class!
Let me start off by saying nothing will prepare you for this class. I have never taken a class remotely as hard as this class. If you want a fair chance of passing this class you have to get SE and do every single practice problem out there. Do not take this class lightly and make sure you invest a lot of time in this class.
This class is hard BUT not impossible. People give Banko a bad reputation because he expects the best from you and if you don't give him your best you're not going to do well, most people come into UF relying on raw talent but Finance makes you work for your grade. AND DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS (the tests follow a pattern).
Professor Banko's class is the toughest class at UF for Finance majors, due to it being a weed-out class. In order to earn the 'B' grade required for a Finance major you have to use Study Edge. The class is very difficult, but staying caught up with Study Edge, and using all of their practice problems and exams makes earning a 'B' very possible.
Get Study Edge, don't go to class. On his syllabus, he said that your performance in Financial Accounting would be indicative of your performance in this class. Since that I got an A in that class without Study Edge, I thought I could do the same here. This was not the case. After my first exam I got Study Edge and got A's on the last 2 exams.
Wouldn't have made it through this class without Study Edge. It really helped and I wouldn't passed without it
Whole Class is 3 exams and that's your grade. Extremely hard class but not impossible. Finance majors have to get a B but business majors only need a D-. EXTRA CREDIT IS A MUST. Received a B only because of Study Edge (Chris is hero). Skip lectures and only do Study Edge. You will need 10-20 hours of work per week in this class to get a C or above.
I got a B in the class and didn't use study edge and solely relied on lectures. I found the class to be challenging but not extremely difficult especially for engineering majors. Even if you get behind a few weeks in lecture giving yourself a week before the exam to study is enough. Lectures are interesting and Banko is very friendly.
The rumors are true: this class might be the bane of your existence. This is a ver hard class, BUT MANAGEABLE! Banko is very clear when he tells you how to pass the class. If you don't watch lectures, finish each study edge packet the day you get them and don't stop taking his module quizzes day after day. If you do that his exams are cake!
You have to dedicate way too much time to this class because it is so test heavy. Study daily and do the extra credit!!!! His tests are extremely hard.
I did not watch lectures at all. I relied on Stude Edge and found it extremely helpful. I did all the end of packet problems and Banko's quizzes and I was fine during the tests. He offers extra credit for people that are doing poorly in the class to bumb them to a C, but no extra credit if you want to get more than a C. Loved the material.
The hardest thing about this class is overcoming the fear instilled on you by other students who performed poorly. This is class is not that hard. Get Study edge and just do the problems at the end of the packet make sure you do his mock exam and SE mock exams as well. I devoted about 20 hours a week for this class but took off 2 weeks after exams
John Banko is a nightmare for this entire institution. UF should be ashamed to employ someone who is responsible for so many students leaving this college. Studied as hard as I ever had for any course. Got 47/60 exam questions right, even after getting 19/20 on one. Class is graded solely on exams so I got a grade I was very dissatisfied with.
Easily the hardest course in UF business degree curriculum. The material is very difficult, and requires A LOT of practice using the practice exams. Banko does break down the questions based on the different techniques being learned, and gives you short quizzes to practice from. Expect to spend time on this one and keep up, or you will fail.
I got through Business Finance with an A without Banko's lectures. I would watch StudyEdge lectures which were great. I recommend making sure you keep up with the chapter review videos and after packet problems. Studyedge knew exactly what we needed to know, how to teach it well, and gave us tons of practice problems (YOU WILL NEED TO PRACTICE!!!)
Never watched one of bankos lectures because he is not as precise as study edge. Study edge is amazing but you need to do every single practice question they give you. Banko does give extra credit so you can get a C but it is very very difficult to get any better than a C. I dont understand why it is necessary for a class to be so difficult
This class is pretty difficult. Don't watch the lectures. Banko works through problems on Excel which you cant even use on the exams. Get Study Edge and make sure to watch every chapter and exam review. If you really wanna get an A you have to practice working through problems at least 1-2 hours every day. Either you know the material or you don't.
Tough class, but don't let the rumors scare you. If you did well in the prereq accounting classes, or you're really strong in math you should be fine. If not, you can extra credit up to a C. This class requires effort regardless of how smart you are, but I argue anyone can pass this class if they put in the time. I used Study Edge, very helpful!
He should be fired. Chris from Study Edge teaches more students than this man. I hated this class, it made my life miserable. I consider myself good at math but imagine a math test with 20 paragraph long questions that all require different formulas you have to memorize. UF needs to make a Finance for nonmajors class because this man sucks.
I can't fairly rate Banko because I watched ZERO lectures and only used Study Edge. He does care, though, and he has a pass-option if you truly gave it your all but fell short. As far as content goes, hardest class I've ever taken. Do as many practice problems as possible, DON'T fall behind, and surely you'll do well. I'm an A student, got a B.
This is the first class I have ever failed. I did everything this man said to do to pass (including extra credit) and still couldn't even pull out a D-. I emailed him after the second exam asking what else I can do next time and he basically said 'keep doing what you're doing.' :)))))) awful. Will most definitely have to use study edge next time.
Use Study Edge
Good Professor, Hard Class. Prepare to work on this class at least an hour a day.
Poor professor, tough class. Had hours of lectures that he wanted us to watch, but weren't actually taught in class. Prepare to study multiple hours a day.
absolutely loved this class! Banko teaches really well & takes time to go over the different exam questions you may see. Don't get it wrong, this class is hard, but put in a lot of effort & u will be good! I watched his old lectures, his current lectures, study edge videos, and did all of the practice stuff he gave. TAKE IN SUMMER WO OTHER CLASSES!
I waited a year to write this review. Banko doesn't teach! This class is about learning how to do his tricky math problems, not about finance. His method of instruction is not effective. UF might as well hire Study Edge because they're the ones actually teaching UF undergraduate students finance. Straight As except for a C+ in this class.
Finance is known to be the hardest class in the business school. If you put the work into it and keep up with the material, it's not that bad. I used StudyEdge for this class and it made the concepts so much easier to understand. If you keep up with their videos and prepare 2 weeks in advance, its totally possible to get an A or B!
Professor Banko is an overall good guy but the class he teaches is incredibly hard on purpose. This is the gatekeeper class for Finance majors and it definitely feels that way. I would highly recommend using Study Edge in conjunction with the regular course material. You will have access to many more practice problems and tests.
Professor Banko is a good professor but that class itself is unecessarily hard. I used Study Edge for most thigns and that really helped me get through it on top of Banko's lectures. They reveiw it chapter by chapter as well as give you a ton of extra practice problems. Keep up with it all and you'll be fine.
Professor Banko is honestly a very good professor. I liked his class a lot and learned very useful information. He works through examples in class and is always willing to help his students out. I do believe that Study Edge is helpful for this class, especially if you want a very high grade or struggle with math-related subjects.
I don't know where all the criticism about Banko is coming from. Yes, the class is difficult, but those that say that he ruins lives of those at UF??? You are attending a highly regarded institution. If you wanted all cupcake classes, go to a community college or get a degree in gender studies. He is a great professor overall.
Avoid at all costs.
Finance is a difficult subject but Banko goes out of his way to make the class manageable. Tons of practice problems on Canvas and he works through problems in class. Interesting personality. You definitely have to study but everyone knows what they are getting into when they sign up for this class. No excuse if you fail.
I found this class to be unnecessarily hard. There's study resources but when you're taking 5 classes you don't have time to watch pre-lectures, lectures, read textbooks, study 100+ slide power points, take quizzes and practice exams for no credit. The extra credit is helpful but not assigned through canvas so you can't forget to check myfinancelab
Honestly, I don't hate Banko. He's not a bad guy, but he's also not a good professor. Get study edge. I have never gotten study edge for a single class since I started at UF, and this is the only class I have needed it for. I got an A by doing every single practice problem Study Edge gave and their practice exams.
On the first day of lecture Banko said to us,"Imagine running stadiums til you're about to puke, and then imagine immediately sitting down after you stop running for an exam. Thats what youre going to feel like when you take my exams."And he was right. Youll never feel ready enough. My advice-Skip lecture, take study edge. Not enough time for both.
Warrington is close to being a T20 B-school and classes like this is what keeps their ranking high. Banko is a good professor imo but math requires practice. I would watch him work through problems and have no idea what was happening when sitting down. I didn't use SE. Canvas problems are enough and will take a lot of time anyways.
Doing well in this class is reliant on using study edge and doing all of the practice problems they give. I didn't watch a singe lecture but did every problem study edge gave, first two exams I got an A but the final was very hard and got a C. You know what to expect on the exams as long as you follow the setup given by banko and study edge.
Overall, the class was difficult but I didn't expect anything less. If you put in the work and the professor sees that, he will help you with what is needed. Definitely recommend using Study Edge and doing every practice problem available to you.
Dr. Banko is more than willing to help you if you need it. People made it seem like this class was impossible to pass but if you spend 1-3 hours a day studying it is very doable. If you are a finance major he grades you solely based on the exams. Extra credit will get you to a C. Study edge is a necessity for this class.
I haven't watched a single one of Banko's lectures. All you need for this class is study edge. Do every single problem that they give you and it will be doable. David is the best tutor!!
The rumors are true. It's an insanely difficult class that will destroy your GPA. USE STUDY EDGE!!! Banko is actually awesome, super understanding and really doesn't want to see you again. If you try, he will give you a D.
Banko is by far one of my favorite professors! His class is definitely a lot of work- but his lectures are super informative! Watch the lectures on Canvas first (his live lectures in person go straight into practice problems). I also loved that he informed the class of recent finance news and fully answered a question before continuing to the next.
Ive gotten nothing below a B in my other classes at UF, but even after putting more work into studying for this class than Ive ever done before, I still only came out with a C+. Tests are hard and he likes to throw in curveballs. Dont wait to take this class because he makes it harder every semester. Use Study Edge and do Extra Credit.
Honestly, this class makes you work for it. All I did was use Study Edge and I was fine. It is not impossible to get an A if you really try and study your butt off. Overall, I loved the material and thought it was very applicable to realistic situations, but the material itself took a lot of practice to fully grasp. Finance majors, you can do it:)
Banko seems like a decent guy apart from this class, but is by far one of the worst teachers/professors I have ever had. Yes, the material is difficult on its own, but he does a very poor job teaching and preparing students. This course is a nightmare. Be prepared to treat this class as a full time job. Study 6+ hrs a day. Use study edge.
Professor Banko is great, but the course is extremely difficult. He does everything in his power to make sure you can succeed, answers questions via email (I was an online student) usually within a few hours, gives you a lot of supporting material and resources. If you are ready to spend A LOT of time on this class, you will pass.
This class is hard. It needs to be for the department, and we know that. Dr. Banko is a good guy, and although his lectures are lacking and I relied on Study Edge, all the resources needed are given. His tests are hard, but just like the practice problems. They're predicable, but you need to put in the time to do well. 6+hr/day for Sum. A, & passed
Banko wants you to think comprehensively. His exams are just nothing like what he teaches. The only way I found to actually do well in the class was to just learn how to do specific exam questions on study edge and hope I could figure out the rest on his exams. The only saving grace is the extra credit my finance lab (DO IT!)
Honestly Banko is an OG. There is no excuse for getting below a B in FIN3403
I hated finance as a class, but I would take Dr. Banko again any day. He truly cares about his students, and as long as you practice and participate you will get a good grade. He's easily accessible and is an interesting lecturer. I was dreading this course, but I'm so thankful I took it with Banko because he's a great professor.
People who tell you this class is not hard are lying to you. Study Edge is a MUST have for this class. Lectures absolutely do not teach you how to take the test. The Study Edge tutor for finance is a god sent. He gives you practice problems, exam breakdowns, and packets for review. Study Edge also has on-call experts to really help make it easier.
This class is nearly impossible. Banko tries to fail people. Avg exam 1 scores are 15-50%. Study edge is imperative for this class, bc even then the content is so confusing and vast that people often retake it. I didn't watch a single Banko lecture, only David's from study edge and they are the only thing getting me through it.
Class is absolutely brutal. Do not take unless you are a finance major. It's not worth the risk to your GPA/scholarships. Literally not enough time to answer every question on the test. Most people get to 10-15/20. Many exam problems are brand new so you need to know EVERYTHING to prepare. Class should be 10 credits because of time commitment
This class is just as bad as youre told, but its doable. Im not a math person; took both accounting classes at Santa Fe. I came into this class knowing Id fail at least once. I only used study edge and did every practice problem and mock exam. Learn the problem types, memorize the steps and Banko tricks for each, and then just plug in.
Class is made up of 3 exams worth 33.33% each. Despite fully understanding the material you can still fail, that is how hard the exams are. Expect to study hard every single day or be prepared to retake it the class. You need a B or higher to pass if you are a finance major. He literally says that this is a weed out class made to fail fin majors.
!!! If you're taking this class do not take with a hard schedule especially if you are a finance major. This class consumed me every day studying and it takes a lot of eeffort and a lot of practice problems. I focused on two chapters for each exam and guessed on the rest and was able to successfully pass but he offers a ton of Exctra credit.
He does not teach the material in a way for you to pass his exams. You will NEED Study Edge to teach you the material (which is not right). The questions that he reviews in class are basic, but the exams are complex. He uses excel in lecture (which is easier), but you can't use excel on the exams. Also be ready to study everyday for at least 6hrs.
Professor Banko gives hard tests and the workload is heavy.
Don't underestimate this class and the exams. The professor is unfortunately completely useless... you will NEED StudyEdge which is so messed up since we are paying tuition primarily to get resource to TEACH us the material. However, is not that case for this class. Be ready to study since day 1
The phrase, "there's more than one way to skin a cat" has never been more true for a course. You not only have learn how to do each problem but, each way he can trick you as well. That's what makes this class frustrating. It is passable though. Bonus points are a must!! You can average a 20 on the exams and pass with D- with full bonus points.
The class is super hard because the professor has so many variations of questions on the exams. You have to learn how to do them multiple ways. What helped me pass was Study Edge. David the study edge expert goes through every problem and variation and gives you so many practice questions so that you are prepared for the exams.
100% the only reason why I passed this class was because of Study Edge. Professor Banko teaches you how to do the problems with Excel, even though you cant even use Excel on the exams. David from Study Edge has so many reviews and practice questions available and he goes through the problems in a way you can understand. Use Study Edge.
Grades are 97% exams. There's 30% EC but only up to a 75(45 becomes 75) which makes a C+ doable. A B is much tougher because you need 80%. The amount of study time needed is crazy. Problem recognition and memorizing steps are a must. Exams are 12 MC+8 FITB and mostly a grab-bag of old exam problems. The class is so hard, you might have to retake it
Professor Banko is a good professor. He is accessible to students and very understanding. The course is challenging but doable. I would recommend doing all extra credit assignments and use Study Edge. I also recommend taking the course by itself or with one other course, no more. Be ready to study every day; this course requires a huge commitment.
Professor Banko isn't that great at teaching what is going to be on the exams. The questions he discusses in lectures are simple, and will often use excel to assist him. However, on the exam, you must use a frustrating financial calculator. It is a difficult class, but he definitely didn't try to help us understand the material for exams.
I tried watching Banko's lectures with the aid of study edge, but after the first exam, I only relied on study edge. He uses excel in lectures, even though you can't even use it for exams. SE is very necessary, and David takes his time to explain difficult concepts. Do everything David says (take mocks seriously, do ALL practice problems & EC)
He is proud of the torment he puts you through & lives for the gotcha. He mentions something for 20 seconds in his boring lectures & it could be one of the 20 incredibly difficult questions on the test which are nothing like the practice ones. My advisor told me most students run from the class with a D-. If you take this class, good luck & do HW.
I honestly never watched one lecture. Study edge is your best help!!! Expect to spend 1-3 hours EACH day watching study edge or doing practice problems. If you stay on track with study edge and do the practice exams, you'll be fine. The tests are similar (or maybe slightly harder) than his "real deal" exams.
This is a very hard class that requires a lot of time, dedication, and Study Edge. Banko's lectures are useless. While there is a lot of material, he does provide a ton of resources for you to study with and they are very similar to the exams. Highly recommend getting study edge and following their plan and you should be fine.
The course itself is very hard but Dr. Banko will try his best to pass you (unless you're a finance or accounting major that needs a B to pass). Took this class while working 2 jobs and failed all three exams lol. Just try to get at least a 50 on the second exam and do all the extra credits and you will pass with at least a C or a C+.
After putting in roughly 50+ hours each week, sometimes more near exam time, I was able to pull of an A. Having a strong work ethic and Study Edge are the only reasons I was able to get an A. As a finance major, I had to get a B or higher, so with this stress, I made sure to do all the SE problems, old exam questions, and reviews. Work hard!!
This class is genuinely not as bad as people make it out to be. Banko is a good professor helps connect the material to real world examples. If you put the time and energy into it, the concepts arent bad. I highly recommend doing the practice quizzes and also getting study edge (I was able to get an 100 on one of the exams doing those).
Dr. Banko has a relaxed attitude. It makes for an enjoyable class, but when it comes to learning the material, he takes a really off-hands approach. In general, his class mostly consists of providing you tools to do financial calculations rather than actually learning the content. I left the class having learned very little.
This class is hard I'm not going to lie. But is it impossible? Not at all. I took it over summer A so I had less than two weeks between exams to study which made it tricky. But I did get a 95 on one of the exams when everyone told me I wasnt even going to pass. I put in 9 hours a day on average and did everything David from Study Edge told me to
I swear this is the hardest and most useless class Ive ever taken. The professor must be high for making students try to memorize everything. This class has nothing to do with real world finance, he just tries to make kids cry for leisure. Good luck. This class was the worst.
This class isn't the worst thing in the world if you know how to go about it (I didn't at first). The key is to simply pretend Banko doesn't exist. For the first exam, I made the mistake of studying his lectures and practice materials, and I failed. The second two I got an A on both tests by only using study edge. Please only use study edge.
From the perspective of a General Business Major, this course is not impossible but is extremely difficult. If I did not have Study Edge, I would've failed this course without a doubt. I studied everyday 6-8 hours a day for this course, and I only was able to score a high B on one exam. Some semesters with Banko are easier than others.
Honestly, if you get study edge this class is not THAT bad... I had to take it for my minor and it was the first business course I took at UF. With study edge, I was able to get a B+. Don't let other reviews scare you it's definitely doable with study edge, I never watched one of Banko's lectures.
As a finance major, you need to get a B in the class - buy the Studyedge and do every single problem David assigns. If you do all of that and keep up with the packets, you'll be fine.
If you aren't a finance major and don't need a B, this class isn't that bad. Banko's extra credit system is set up so that you can EASILY get a C+ (75%), making it very forgiving for non-finance majors. However, extra credit points can only get you up to a C+, so you have to WORK to get above a C+. Keep up with Study Edge, and you should be fine.
if you must take this class... GET STUDYEDGE!!! the only platform that will present the information correctly to you. Professors lectures are confusing and the questions on exams are extremely time consuming and have many curve balls in them to mess you up. Do ALL of MyLab module and complete the end of course evaluation.. these will help the grade
Use StudyEdge or you will fail. Listen to David and do the extra credit or you will fail. Prepare to cry over blue packets 50 pages thick twice a week for an entire semester. And even then, you may fail. Finance majors, prayers up for you. Everyone else? Still praying for you. Do your Gator Evals!!!!! So glad to be done with this class.
Worst class ever hands down. Use study edge if you are trying to pass this class but and A or B is almost impossible.
The hardest class I have taken at UF so far... Graded very heavy on the exams. The exams are also very tough and you have to REALLY KNOW the formulas . He does make it so you can pass if you do the MFL and real deal extra credits. Worst part is that he explains problems during lectures using excel and then doesn't let you use it on the exams.
Class is overhyped. Use study edge and ignore Banko completely and an A is easy to get. I have no idea what he looks like, never watched a lecture, and did none of his work and missed three questions the entire class.
Definitely the most challenging course I have taken in the college of business. Get StudyEdge or FAIL the class. Never attended a single lecture. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. Dedicated about 6-8 hours a day to this class. I recommend to finish each StudyEdge packet within 1-2 days. Review all StudyEdge packets a week + in advance of an exam. Work hard!
Purely use study edge and you will be fine, the class gets a lot of hype for the hardness but it is not that hard it just takes a lot of time. Make sure to do the extra credit and stay ahead on the practice problems. I am sure Banko is a nice guy but his lectures arent as helpful as study edge's
I learned a lot of valuable information in this class. I used study edge instead of watching Banko's lectures and it was much more helpful. The exam review was extensive and as long as you dedicate time each week you will be fine.
Banko's lectures are not horrible but I suggest not going to them. Study edge does a great job of explaining this material, and do everything David says to do. You have to really want to understand finance to do well in this class, otherwise good luck. Otherwise, he's considerate of non-finance majors, so if you're that take advantage.
FIN3403 is the most overrated class. If you study hard, you'll be fine. Everyone that gives this class a bad rep are the ones who didn't study and paid the price on the first exam. Banko is a great professor, but if you're not into his lecturing style then I'd recommend Study edge.
I got a 97 in the class. It is honestly no that bad. I was so scared I was gonna fail this class because of the horrible rep it has, so I studied my ass off for exam 1 and got a 100. exam 1 was so easy compared to study edge's mock and I had way over studied. If you get study edge and do the problems you will 100% pass they predict his exam perfect
This class is overrated. This was the first class i got study edge for because all the people who took the class scared me into it. Is this class doable without study edge? yes but study edge makes it a lot easier. Just dont slack off for exam one and keep up your pace in studying. Do bankos quizes at least 10 times until you mastered each concept
Banko himself is an interesting lecturer and a great professor. However, the exams are quite difficult. He makes it very easy to pass, but it takes some work to get a B or better. I recommend using Study Edge if you can.
Definitely the hardest class I have taken; however, you can fail every exam and still get a C with Banko's ACP system. You really have to work to get anything above that though (e.g. average an 80 on the exams to get a B). If you tune out all of the hype over this class and put in the work almost every day you will do well! GET STUDY EDGE TO PASS!!
If you're not a finance student this class is not difficult with study edge. You can very easily pass just as long as you do all of the extra credit.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken and I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. I managed to pass but it destroyed my GPA. I hate that they make all business majors take the class meant to weed out the finance majors.
Hardest class I've taken at UF yet I will never use anything I learned in it. The class is meant to weed finance majors out yet is a class for all business. Passing the class requires study edge as lectures aren't helpful. Exams have difficult twists to them and are the only grade. Extra credit but only applies if you have less than a C.
PATHETIC CURRICULUM In what world is finance done w/ a financial calculator lacks emphasis on modern hireable tools/knowledge Class is living in the 80s Crazy UF is highly ranked in business Professor has audacity to brag about how traditional/unchanged the course is & how his students get laughed at as interns for lack of spreadsheet knowledge.
Overall, this class is the hardest business course I have taken at UF. I would highly recommend getting Study Edge, as it saves a lot of time by focusing on the important questions you need to know for exams. In my opinion, the course should be broken up into two separate classes for finance majors and non-finance majors.
I definitely recommend study edge for this class. It lays out the content really well and makes it very easy to understand. David, the study edge tutor, is a great teacher and I would refer anyone to learn from him.
My main problem with Banko isn't how difficult the class is, though as an instructor I do take issue with the class format. It's how he genuinely gets enjoyment out of students failing his class, telling us he's going to "get us"/trick us on exams.Feels like he has very little concern for students' wellbeing. Happy I dropped a finance major though.
Despite what everyone says about Banko, its not hard to get an A: just takes a lot of work. Compared to the ACG classes, there are no trap answers on exams, you either know it or you don't. If you put in about 4-7 hours per study edge packet (get study edge) you'll get a good grade. My exam scores were 85,95,95 and course evals boosted me to the A
Finance majors must take this class seriously, using study edge from the very start. If you get below a 65-70 on the first exam you will have a very tough semester. If you do everything that study edge gives you, and do the module quizzes an A is very achievable, but be prepared to start studying 7-10 days before to get a good grasp on everything.
If you aren't a finance major, don't try to get above a C. It isn't worth it. If you do the extra credit assignments, you can average 45 on the exams and pass with a C. He gives you 2 repeated questions from the previous exam and 4 questions from the practice exam. Memorize them and try to get 3 more questions and you're golden.
Overall, this class isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Put your head down, block out the noise, and get to work. As long as you do that, you should be in good shape to get the B if you're a finance major. Study Edge is HIGHLY recommended. Well worth it. If you put everything into studying for exam 1, you will set yourself up nicely.
This course is difficult, but if you put in the work and stay on track you can do well. Study Edge in my opinion is absolutely necessary, and make sure you do Banko's module quizzes as well because they really help with understanding the material in and out. Combining Study Edge and the module quizzes were how I got A's on the last two exams.
This class is ridiculously hard. Study edge is a must if you want a B (which I went for despite not being a finance major). You have to put in a huge amount of effort to study for the 3 exams, which make up the overall grade. I would recommend starting studying like 2 weeks before exams.
Banko is a very hard professor, but anyone is capable of getting a B (or better) in this class. The material is hard, but the exams are very fair. GET STUDY EDGE!!!! They explain the material very well, and over prepare you for the exams. I got a 100,100, 95 on the three exams using all the material study edge provided. Good luck!
Biggest disappointment of my college career by far! Banko cares more about your mastery of the 20+ year old financial calculator than he does about teaching concepts and principles required to succeed in business. I checked out after the first exam and cruised to a C without learning a single thing or putting in any effort due to his grading scale.
If you aren't a finance major don't even watch Banko's lectures use study edge. The class really isn't hard if you do that.
If you are not a finance major, I found this class to be about the same difficulty as management or real estate. I kept up with study edge packets and did practice exams to review. Also do ALL the extra credit.
BF has the worst reputation but I promise it's exaggerated. The issue with this class is you have 3 exams and that's it. The extra credit only benefits those who are failing. It will not count for those who get avg grades. Do the EC + the bare minimum and you'll secure a C. You have to actually study if you want higher than that but it is doable.
Don't take this class unless you're a finance/business major. Absolute hell
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. I was spending 3-4 hours everyday doing practice problems, but never felt truly comfortable with the material. Make sure you do all of the extra credit since you may not be a finance major after this course. Anyone can pass by doing the extra credit and guessing on the exams if that's what you need.
I always ignore reviews about bad professors on this website. Most of the time, either the professor is not bad or their class is just rigorous. But this is not one of those cases. This class is very difficult. With over 1,000 people, the average is a C (including EC). You need to use Study Edge to pass. Bad professor and class. Exams are too hard.
Finance is not crazy difficult but Banko makes it that way. If I hadn't used study edge for this class I would have failed and would have had to switch majors. Didn't watch any of his lectures as they are super confusing but the Study Edge covered the content perfectly. Highly recommend using it.
Finance is not supposed to be a challenging class; however, it is at UF. The professor is extremely hard, and the class is one of the hardest at UF for no reason. I studied for over 40 hours for the first exam and received a 70. This was a very high grade for this exam but of course the professor did not curve.
This course is designed to weed-out Finance majors, and UF is happy with every other business major taking a GPA crash. You're expected to get a D-. Banko tells you that you should be proud to get a C. His questions overwhelm you so that you make little mistakes and get the question wrong. He purposely makes finance hard. Get StudyEdge immediately.
The class is hard but anyone is able to get a C because of his massive amount of extra credit. The actual workload for the class is pretty low outside of exam week. If you are going for a B or higher you have to work for it and study hard before the exams. Ignore what others say and go full effort for the exams and a B or higher is achievable.
As a finance major, this was the most stressful class I've ever taken, but not the most difficult. The content itself is not that bad if you're good at math, but the fact that your grade (if you want anything above a C) is only determined by 3, 20 question tests is absurd. DO YOUR GATOREVALS, I was one question away from a B and the curve saved me.
This class was actually not that hard. I got three 100 for all three exams. However, it was based on the fact that I learned entirely from Study Edge resources, instead of Banko's lecture videos. I tried to watch his videos at the start of the semester, but it was just impossible to understand anything from them. Awful learning experience...
Study edge was my best friend throughout this course. Banko expects you to be extremely knowledgeable with Finance content, so his lectures are not helpful. If you keep up with the Study Edge sessions, all practice problems, and mock exams, you will be okay and pass!!
This course is quite valuable regardless of whether you're a finance major. The best piece of advice I could give is to create a schedule for yourself and block out the noise. There is simply no way to get an A without putting in maximum effort. Create an actionable plan for each module/ section and you will be golden. Study edge is also a must.
No other professor will have a hipaa violation in their syllabus. This guy is a joke, I am sorry you are forced to take him.
Banko is horrendous, enough said. After emailing him several times, he is extremely egotistical is looks to blame his students for all problems which occur. StudyEdge is a must, lectures don't prepare you for exams. Your grade is based on 3 exams plus a 3 point practice quiz, and you need to average an 80 if you're a finance major to stay as one.
Class is extremely overhyped. The only reason people find it difficult is because your final grade is based on three exams. Use this to your advantage by focusing not on the MFL problems but the Real Deal Exam questions/module quizzes and you will be able to pass with a B minimum (impossible to get an E in this course if you put in 2+ hrs a week).
I'm really reviewing the class more than anything. Can't say I watched a single lecture from Banko. Get Studyedge. Do EVERYTHING Studyedge offers. EVERY problem. The class difficulty is overblown (it's still difficult but a good grade is more achievable than you think). I got an 85, 100, and 95 on the 3 exams respectively, all thanks to Studyedge.
This class was only difficult because of the speedy semester of Summer A. Don't waste your time watching his lectures or doing the MFL. GET STUDY EDGE! They prepare you for everything and getting an A is more attainable than you think, especially during a regular semester but you NEED study edge. Don't think about it, just get it!
Don't bother watching his lectures. GET STUDYEGDE. I tried to go only based on his content to study but it was hard to follow his lectures and it felt like I wasn't learning anything; StudyEdge saved me from failing. Wouldn't recommend taking it in the summer, especially if you haven't taken it before (I hadn't). Doable if you put in the work.
Dr. Banko's graduate-level Finance class was both informative and challenging. The material isn't necessarily easy for non-business undergrad students; however, Dr. Banko makes the class interesting and relevant to for students with careers in many different industries. The group case studies were actually pretty fun and useful.
Not as bad as some may think. The whole class is graded on three exams only which can be hard if you didn't study. He gives a great amount of extra credit! 25 points on your grade!! Practice exams are a good guide for actual exam.
Hardest class ever and for no reason whatsoever. Do not take with this professor. Headache and a half. Please stay away if this professor is your option. My goodness why does everything have to be so damn difficult?
I came into this class knowing it was hard, but the professor is the problem. He doesn't understand that not everyone in this class is a finance major, and he expects way to much. He doesn't unlock the exams because "you should know what you got wrong". Get study edge if you need to take this! The test is usually always curveballs.
What no one in this class tells you is that the Extra credit only counts if you have a grade less than 72%, which unfortunately more than half the class has cause his exams are impossible to pass. Your grade depends solely on 3 exams. Literally the worst class I have ever taken here!
Where do I begin... lets just say he took his own test and scored a D. Tests are way too much material, no leniency and the questions are worded horribly. The first exam was the hardest so far, but it literally takes up over 10 hours a week of learning and studying to pass with a C-
Dr. Banko does did give extensions for any circumstance, his quizzes and tests are extremely difficult. StudyEdge helps but not enough.
This class ruined my semester. Absolutely awful with impossible exams. I studied so much and still barely passed with a C. Prof. sucks, the class is so unfair, zero leniency with anything. Get Study Edge and do the extra credit quizzes and practice exams, that's the only reason why I was able to pass.
I went into this class expecting a struggle and I got just that. By far the hardest class I've ever taken in college. Get Study Edge and do the extra credit! If you are still struggling, reach out to Dr. Banko. He's a tough professor, but I promise you, he cares and will do what he can, but you have to show him you are putting in the effort.
You don't need to attend his lectures unless you're a finance major. Getting an A or B is doable but only by grinding StudyEdge and practice exams for 10+ hours per week. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT AND TAKE THE EXAMS ON THE PRIMARY DATE! If you miss the alternate date for ANY reason no matter how legit, he will NOT let you make it up and you WILL get a 0.
Class tough and doable, but very overhyped. Consistent studying 1-2 hours a day will more than prepare you (I mean CONSISTENT). Exams are 95% like the practice quizzes. He tells you what questions are on the test, and there are at least hundreds of practice problems. The exams do not have trick answers, meaning if you get the answer, it is correct
In all fairness, Banko is a great person. If you need help or have any specific questions for him, he quickly responds to emails and is very receptive. With that being said, his class is very very tough. Do the study edge and do ALL of the end of packet problems. Also, make sure you are on top of of the extra credit. It will save you in the end!
Very very difficult class. Even to get a C i had to put hours and hours of work in each day. So much content and concepts are very difficult to grasp. I would highly recommend studynedge but with Banko starting to change this class, not sure if study edge would be too useful in the future. The extra credit is much harder to earn now.
Very interesting course however, it is very time consuming and difficult. Recommend using study edge to help understand the concepts better.
This class wrecked me as a person lol. Keys to success: GET STUDY EDGE + FINISH THE ENTIRE PACKET. Memorize problem types. Without, I would have failed. Do EVERY EXTRA CREDIT (Quizzes, real deals). They save you. Use the study edge packets on the REAL DEAL and scrape them to answer problems. Take exams on time. Earlier is better. i am broken
If you are taking this class summer semester please drop!! It was impossible enough taking it during a longer semester. Banko is changing this course and making it harder. So take it with lighter classes!!!!
This class is extremely difficult. If you want to do well, you have to put in a lot of time and effort. Professor Banko teaches well, and provides hints for what exactly will be on the exam during his lecture. If you want to do good, do absolutely everything possible on the course website and study for the exams days in advance.
This class is difficult! You have to put in A LOT of time if you want to succeed. This was expected. What I didn't expect was how two-faced Banko was. He acts like the nice guy by give a bunch of extra credit, and it is nice to have. However, in my experience Banko was rude and dismissive. If you have to take this class, GOOD LUCK!
Does not care to truly teach the students. He has way too many lectures, does not give feedback on any assignments, requires a lot of time to complete his work. I would expect to set aside 15-20hours a week for this course alone.
There's a reason why you can't pass this class without Study Edge. His lectures will not teach you much if anything at all. Do the whole Study Edge packet, ESPECIALLY the old exam questions. Come into this class wanting to pass, getting an A is nearly impossible.
They call this class the GPA buster for a reason. I missed honors because I got a C. It's really difficult and the lectures don't help at all. Having said that, it's that difficult to get a C. The grade scale for C is a D in most classes. Tip: Do the Extra Credit and it will save you. Get Study Edge. A It's a life saver You got this. Good luck
Banko's class is insanely tough, but using resources like unstuckstudy ai, ChatGPT, and the study packets can really help. Attend every lecture, do all extra credit, and prepare extensively for exams. It's a lot of work, but doable with the right strategy.
Only graded on exams. Only good thing is that course evaluations boost grade by letter (B- becomes B+, etc)
I haven't even completed this course yet, but it is the day before the first exam and this professor doesn't teach anything; he just throws everything in excel and assumes you can figure out how to do the calculations WITHOUT access to any formulas during the exams. Genuinely the hardest class I have ever taken.
Not good, annoying
I was a 4.0 student before this class. My whole semester is ruined after studying 5 hours a day for exams just to fail. Tips don' just memorize how to do the problems actually apply to the real world. STUDY EDGE IS A MUST! But he takes every chance to make this class as hard as possible. His TA's made practice exams and quizzes which were no help.
He's not even a CFA and he's teaching me finance? His overly complicated problems seem like he's masking his insecurity about not actually knowing that much about finance. Also, constantly name-dropping his “billionaire friends” feels more like a bid for validation as to why he's teaching the class. I have no idea how he got tenure.
Much of what we learn is irrelevant to the real world, he even admits that his concepts don't apply outside of his class! Funnily enough, Study Edge does more to tie examples to real-life scenarios then he ever does.
It's not entirely his fault as to why he's probably the lowest rated professor at UF. Each semester, the school pressures him to make the class more challenging as a way to filter students in the finance department to meet employment targets for graduates, and they do that by narrowing the pool of candidates.
This class is the one that really shows that UF operates a lot more as a business than a university. The school forces this class to be difficult to boost employment rates after graduation to get more state funding. Not to mention skimming money from finance majors year after year.
Hard is one thing. Unreasonable is another. Set up to fail. Useless TA guides, books, practice exams, and lying about exam content. "Not on exam" = on the exam. Studied 5 hours/day for nothing. 4.0 gone. Proudly lying about tests to artificially challenge students doesn't make a class rigorous, it makes it worthless. What a waste of a great class.
Worst class I've ever taken. Beyond unfair. The way this class works shouldn't be allowed! I can't believe this.
Terrible at teaching and a bad class strucutre. Aware of his terrible teaching (exam 1 avg. was 55%) yet doesn't provide any extra resources for students to succeed. I know it's a weed out class but going on tangents for half the lecture is not helping anyone. If you don't want to pay for StudyEdge or struggled with TVM in ACG2021, avoid FIN3403.
It sucks when you pay so much money to go to this school and get a horrible professor and then have to pay additional money to study edge or smokin' notes to essentially be your professor because Banko is incapable. The tests are VERY hard. Don't beat yourself up or question your intelligence if you don't succeed in this class, it's Banko, not you.
Never had a professor this bad, and I spent 2yrs at community college. Ignore the lectures, they are worthless. Do the extra credit, but it only counts if you're
Basically only grades are 3 exams (~20 questions written as confusing as possible with random stuff you've never learned). You can't review them after. Class format changed halfway so must relearn everything from irrelevant financial calc on Excel. Scammy "retake" exam has 0 resources (def a trap). No exam curves even w 55% avg. Avoid at all costs!
Pretty sure Ivy League finance classes are easier than this. Have many friends at different schools and basically the easiest examples of content we learn just for Exam 1 is 75% of their entire course content. The only resource for students that actually helps isn't even from the University but a $50/month Study Edge subscription. Hope he's fired.
genuinely the worst class i will ever take. put more time into studying for this class than a full time job and now i'm just miserable because i still didn't pass.
Dear Banko, You can solve those problems top to bottom because you've been working on them for 20 years—not because you're a genius or an exceptional financier. What you're doing to your students is nothing short of despotism. It's unfair, and the university shouldn't allow it.
Never had a professor this bad, even at community college. 4.0 destroyed. StudyEdge is your BFF. Do the EC, but it only counts if you're
better to flee from death than feel its grip. prayers for all who have yet to take this class, for it is a beast not so easily vanquished
i would rather suffer 10000 papercuts and jump into a vat full of lemon acid than ever read the words "birthday problem" ever again. studying for this over thanksgiving break was a sick twist of irony. i have traded all my thanks in for grief and despair. next time i want to learn about finance i'll ask a frat bro why we can't just print more money
get study edge study ahead of time bro this thing is not a joke. i have never contemplated ending it till this class
This professor puts UF to shame. The grading scale is designed for you to just do well enough to pass the class, but nothing more. Exams 1 and 3 was way too long and difficult for the time limit.
horrible. impossible to do well and odds r always stacked against you
The grading of this course is made for students to pass. A 46 on the three exams will get you a C, if you do HW/Qs. However, finance majors are required to get a B in this course to graduate, which requires an huge jump to 82 on all exams. I scored 10-15 points above average on all exams, and will barely make a C+. HWs only help if you are failing.
Do it if u have to. It's setup so that anyone should get a C by doing the connect and proctored quizzes, 50% on exams. Difficult to get a B, as if you get less than a B even on the first exam (55% avg) you are screwed rest of the term. The "Replacement Exam" is a scam and can lower your grade. Professor relies on decade old material to "teach"
This class is UNREASONABLY difficult and genuinely for no reason. Banko is absolutely useless, and Study Edge is a REQUIREMENT (though he'll tell you it's not, liar.) Don't bother with the textbook, also useless. Worst 4 months of my life thanks to this class 😝. do absolutely all of the extra credit.
somebody write an "I Survived" book about me taking this class
If you're a finance major, sell your soul to BFI for the first four weeks. It's totally doable to get an 85-95 on the second exam and an 80+ on the final once you know how hard the exams are, but if you don't do well on the first exam, it's over. Most people (me) miss getting a B by one or two questions. Don't be like most people.
It is not as bad as everyone says it is, need to pass the class with a C? You will be fine. If you need a B because you are a finance major then put in the work. It is the weed out class for Finance majors and I totally agree on that with Dr. Banko. Use STUDY EDGE, David and Matthew made it "easier."
Banko thrives off making his class impossible for students. The grading is impossible and there's no way to feel like you're improving with absolutely no feedback or explanations on the Module quizzes or exams. His practice exams and even Study Edge don't ever match, other than his 20+ minute long questions, so truly what's the point of studying?
It is not only hard to get a good grade in this class, but also hard to pass.Key is to stay consistent with study edge and do as many practice problems as possible. Worst class and professor I've ever had.
The grading isn't as difficult/heavy as people make it out to be. I'd say it's on par with something like PHY2048. Just study the practice quiz answers if you want a decent grade. I did the absolute bare minimum (watched pre recorded lectures and crammed before exams) since this isn't for my major and was able to pass.
If you are not a finance major, welp this class isn't bad if you don't care about GPA. But if you are a finance major like me, be ready to give up your social life. Exam 1 was the toughest and if you can't get a 60 or higher honestly just withdraw. Barley passed the class with study edge. Prepare to do 10+ hours of studying per day before each exam
if you do the homework, quizzes, and study for the exams you can pass the class BUT getting a B seems borderline impossible
THIS CLASS IS THE HARDEST CLASS U WILL EVER ENCOUNTER. Bro I couldn't even go to work for the whole semester. I f cried like three times and am a dude. You need at least 12 hours per day to study for this nonsense and I barely passed. Invest on StudyEdge. exam3 was the "easiest". Memorize all conceptual questions. DO all past exam questions n pray!
Survivable as long as you have Study Edge. Exam 1 was the hardest, it also VERY hard to get more than a C+ on the class. You have to dedicate yourself everyday at least for a couple of hours so you can handle the workload. Questions are hard and very manual/repetitive. This would have been an useful class if it wasn't structured to make you fail.
He wants you to fail
This class is designed to be a weed-out course for finance majors, but is way too hard. To pass with a C, if you do all extra credit, you only need a 46% avg on the exams. Finance majors need a B, but the extra credit doesn't count past a C, so you must disassociate from everyone you love and psychologically torture yourself by studying non-stop.
Its doable, as a finance major who got the exact grade on exam 3 I needed for a B. However, it is extremely time consuming and difficult. You'll have no life.GET STUDY EDGE and stay on top of the schedule. Do all study edge practice exams and ALL S.E PROBLEMS. memorize banko's conceptuals from the quizzes. Exam 1 is hardest and exam 2 the easiest.
Exams make up 97% of your final grade and he frequently changes his grading policies at whim. The class is structured to pass the majority of his students, but it is gruesome to get above a C. His real exams do not mirror his practice exams and his lectures do not prepare you either as he covers material quickly and not thoroughly.
Banko does not like teaching and hates his students. It is not worth attending lectures or watching his content since they do not even cover the material on the exam. Use studyedge. I got an A in this class through 7 hours of studying on average per day. The only material of his I used was the practice problems after I ran out of the studyedge ones
The exams' difficulty are ranked from easiest to hardest as follows: Exam 2, 1, 3. 97% of the grade is exams. This class was my first B. His lectures are not useful, though conceptuals in the practice quizzes are great study material. I was one question away from a B+ and one question away from not being a finance major. Be careful and study HARD.
Memorize the Desai end of chapter questions, they are the 'conceptual' questions on the exam. DO STUDY EDGE AND BANKO'S PRACTICE EXAMS. Exam 2 is easy, 1 is a bit difficult, but 3 ipo was the worst. Plus he just started doing exam 3 using excel no calculator so study extra hard. An A is doable but you have to dedicate 90% of your time to this class
i simply cannot put into words how much this classed pissed me off. i am a comp sci student and this class was harder than some of my higher level comp sci classes. i put my all into this class and barely got a C+. so upsetting.
I'm re-reading the reviews of Banko and this class for laughs currently. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. Avoid if you can, do Study Edge otherwise.
This class is not a Finance Class. It is a class that teaches you how to solve puzzles. The actual work being done by the student is not necessarily attempting to understand the system of finance, but rather to figure out how to parse a set of complex instructions and solve the puzzle.
This is a hard class no doubt. I managed to pull off an A on the first exam but it took a lot of blood, sweat and listening to frat guys talking about getting great internships to encourage me to not get railed on the first exam. Just do the module packet problems and do it everyday. I'm not guarenteed a passing grade yet but this seems to work.
Professor Banko is by far one of the worst professors I have ever encountered. He doesn't bother to go over everything that's on the exam, so students are left to fend for themselves. His class creates an exhausting and miserable environment. He's an awful professor in every aspect. If you value your mental health, avoid this class at all costs.
Worst professor I've ever had. Not even worth going to his lectures.
you guys need to chill. this class is not the bane of your existence, just do study edge and learn how to manage your time. i could have easily passed with an a or maybe a+ if i devoted an organized two hours a day
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! Do Not take this Professor. UF really needs to look into having other professors who have a higher rate of students passing this class. 3 exams, quizzes and lots of work. The exams are super hard. UF should offer tutoring sessions for this class and Extra Credit. This class causes severe anxiety..you have to get at least a B.
Dr. Banko is great, lots of overreactions in this page. Watch the lectures, do the work, watch the TA reviews and you are going to be fine. The study edge sucks for Excel cause they are not updating it but it still helps if you have the means. Dr. Banko is very smart and knows exactly what he is doing so just do the work and you will do great.
People tend to overhype how hard Bifi is, in reality yeah it sucks but def manageable. I think getting a C is definitely really attainable, getting B's and A's requires lots of studying and id say anywhere from 12-20 hours outside of class a week working on the content. He kinda blabs a lot in his lecture and tends to go over only 2-3 problems.
Legendary professor. Very knowledgeable. Class gets a bad rap but only because there is a lot of content. Put the time in and you'll be fine. Wish I could take him for more classes.
if you werent religious before, pick a religion and start praying because this class will have you begging every god known to man. just yesterday i found myself praying to God, Buddha, Jesus, AND Allah for mercy because of this class. i lost two dear friends of mine this semester because i kept turning them down to study for this class.
I am a Student in his Fin4128 Financial Plan Development class. Haven't received grades for the mid term exam or financial plan and there is a week left until the end of the semester. Can't really think of a reason why they haven't been graded outside of laziness (its been almost 40 days).
This class is absolutely beyond what should be expected at undergraduate level. Be prepared to memorize 100s of formula variations & ratios and how they interplay with each other. Exams are taken with zero formula sheets and are purposely designed to trip you up. I do work full time but even if I didn't this class would be a NIGHTMARE.
As a finance major you need to be ready to put in the work, and accept the fact that even doing that you may still not get what you wanted. Just keep doing problems and get study edge for extra practice. How you do on exams 1 and 3 depends highly on his mood since some of the twists he puts may make or brake your grade.
This class was unreasonably difficult for an intro to finance course. You need to be doing study edge as soon as it comes out and do every. single. problem. at the end of the packet. This course is ridiculous and you need to deticate your life to it to do well. These comments are not exaggerating.
get the study edge and actually put the work in. Banko is actually a good person and he's willing to help his students when possible. reach out. test 1 is the hardest and it's very important. study hard for it. test two is much easier and test 3 is even easier. it seems super intimidating at first but if you just put the work in ur fine.
Put in the bare minimum amount of effort and barely scraped by with a D, thank God for extra credit. If you are not finance/do not enjoy finance this class will make your head hurt, and if you are you will have to grind like hell for a B. Awful experience, thank God it's over.
This was last class to graduate - by far the worst teacher I've ever had. Insanely smart however he purposefully makes this class as difficult as possible for no reason besides weeding out finance majors. He doesn't teach much of anything. Imagine dedicating 200 hours for a D because of how hard the material is. Thank the stars for study edge.
This class is known to be super hard and it is. However, I would not attribute it to the way Dr. Banko teaches, all exams have at least 3-4 questions that resemble his lectures and the TA's do a great job at preparing you for success. I didn't use Study Edge, I tried, but it was confusing and easier than exams. Med-Hard course but I learned A LOT!
Not too bad, I hear a lot of people think this class is hard, I just skimmed the lectures and got high 90s on all exams. Mostly just common sense if you are a finance bro
I needed study edge to teach me the material for this class because he didn't. I had to watch the recording of lectures, as there are over 1400 students enrolled in this course and the lectures are in a maybe 50 person sized classroom. Lectures were also mostly problem solving as the slideshows were prerecorded from Covid and horribly out of date.
Do you think God stays in heaven because he, too, lives in fear of what he's created here on earth?
The fear of this class is overrated if you're not a finance major. Yes it is time consuming but if you use his content and use study edge and do all of the assignments you'll be okay. Just take the D or C and stay focused on your other classes because it's easy to get caught up in this class.
This class is really really hard, he just made the class completely excel based so no calculators on exams. If your not a finance major, just take the C and move on with your life, its not worth putting hours and hours into this class. If you want the B though, you need to work your ass off
Worst class I have ever taken. Put in so many hours of studying each week to still get a bad grade. You need to memorize hundreds of formulas with exam questions that are almost impossible to answer with the amount of time given for each exam. Praying for all who need to take this course. Be prepared to have no life and GET STUDY EDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class will terrify you. Exams are insanely hard and painful. This professor has a duty to make you fail. Never take him. Run as far away as you can.
Not nearly as bad as people say. Use the resources on Canvas to learn and practice the material. If you put in the time and effort to learn the material you will do well. Exams were very fair and similar to all the practice. Went to all the lectures and found them useful. He gives many hints in lectures as to what will and won't be on exams!
If I was rating how well a professor implements a gratuitously cruel class structure, Banko would take the gold medal. I would argue that he has somehow made me dumber than I was at the start of the semester. I think I'll just take a $34.99 course on Udemy to actually learn about business finance now. UF should be ashamed of how this class is ran.
Hard class with a horrible professor. Study edge is a must. Exams represent some of his practice problems, but you'll have to use study edge to teach yourself the content. Getting 25 ACPs is a doable if you print out his PDF questions cause many of the quiz questions just use different numbers. Never watched a single lecture and just did study edge
its not that bad. he only uses excel now, so its easier for exam 1! do the study edge mocks, his review & real deal, and each module/chapter review packets. review review review and review some more. study edge sucks at the final topic imo (M&M world & redoing MVE/stock prices) - his explanation is better tbh! you got this!
In order to succeed, especially accounting majors, DO STUDY EDGE! Review the mini videos given along with the quiz answer keys and exam reviews. He boosts everyone's grade by a letter grade (b to b+, b+ to a-, etc) if 80% of class does gator evals and also lots of extra credit given. If you just need to pass the class, it's light work.
Consistently study and ensure you are comfortable in excel, and you'll do fine.
listen this class is hard, it is so gd hard!! but Banko is a really caring professor. He makes a lot of effort to make himself accesible outside of class, and to connect with students. did this class take a couple years off my life: yes! did attending class and making an effort to connect with Banko help: YESS. Show up to lectures, and buckle in!
Study Edge is a must. Get any ACPs you can. He cares about students but sticks to the rules no matter what. Very Gen-X in approach. Attend class or watch the recordings. The material is tough, but he ensures the grade is earned, not easily given. Protects the value of our degrees.
this sucked. it's crazy that all business majors are required to take this specific course with Banko. he just swapped to excel when I took this course and every time I thought I understood, I would get the answer wrong. just make sure to do everything provided, everything he gives you, and study edge too if you can afford it. I'm sorry, good luck
Get Study Edge if you need a B. Do all the SE practice exams and packets. Don't fall behind. His lectures aren't ideal for learning the content, but could be helpful. DO THE COURSE EVALS. Extra credit is only useful up to a C. Get ready to study for several hours a day, especially for the first exam. Second exam is easiest. Hardest class I've done.
If you are ashiest, pick a religion and pray. If you are not a geed say bye to having a social life. If anyone who is not a business major makes fun of you for choosing an "easy" major, show them this class. You are kind of chilling when it comes time for the second exam, but why is the 3rd exam 2 days after the FSU game?
