Barrett is someone you love to listen to. He is a very intelligent man who I learned a lot from. He challenges you to make you think. I took 3 classes with him at ESU before he went to Bloom to teach.

He is a great teacher, I love attending his classes, I have learned a lot from him and his teaching, he is very laid back and very helpful.
Enjoyable class- lots of humor! He facilitates many friendships within the classroom. And not to mention, he gives out mega extra credit through games like Jeopardy. He also enhanced my creative writing skills.
John Barrett is probably going to be the best professor i will have at Bloomsburg. He's a good man.
i had a really hard time and it just got worse. he is a great teacher but i had a lot of problems learning from him
What an awesome teacher. He is the best teacher I have had at Bloomsburg or maybe even school in general. If you want to learn and get an easy grade take Barrett
EXCELLENT teacher!! Very enthusiastic and full of energy. Loves to hear opinions and gets a kick out of them. Papers aren't too hard (it IS a writing class, after all). Got an A and didn't do much for it.
The best profesor i've ever had. Very funny, hip, very intelligent guy. The assignments kept me interested and he makes everything fun. Gives tons of extra credit too.
seems like a good guy and very willing to help....but he also contradicts himself frequently
Mr. Barrett is an excellent professor. He is very helpful and he gives out a lot of extra credit. He gives you a lot of work and one very hard essay but he helps you a lot. I think he is by far one of the best professors I have had. I recommend him to anyone!
This is the best professor i ever had in bloomsburg University.
he was a good teacher and he helped us a lot during the semester
I love this professor. he was my favorite on this campus and i am a transfer student. Absolutely recommend him for any class he teaches.
He is a great professor. He is very helpful. There are a lot of papers to work on throughout the semester. He also gives extra credit. I got an A in the class. So, if you work hard, you should be able to get a really good grade! I really hope I will have him in other classes!
He was very nice, always was there if you needed help.

Wonderful prof. Great person. Very helpful and clear. Taught me more about writing creatively in three months than I would have ever expected.
I loved professor Barrett as a teacher. He was very helpful and an amazing instructor. I would recommend everyone take him for english.
The class is very laid back and he isn't afraid to joke around with the students. Also if you take his class you better Facebook him because he checks.
He is a nice teacher but he makes girls cry a lot even tough he is very helpful with conversations. Also he is a hotty! that will look at u eyes so u can enjoy his influence...
Mr. Barrett is a great teacher. Very helpful. He wants you to succeed and will do everything in his power to help you do so. I feel he is the best professor on campus. I wish I could take every class with him. If you get the chance def. take him. I had him for an 8AM class...He made waking up worth it.
very nice guy, gives 3 essays throughout the semester. you can re-do these essays as many times you want and he'll return them w/ comments to improve your grade. the literature he uses is actually interesting, comic books etc. Gives alot of extra credit and class is graded on personal improvement. At one point every student will read 1 of ur esssay
He is a fun professor. Very energetic. Good class. You learn a lot. CLASS IS MANDATORY. There are 3 essays but you can revise them a lot. You can basically determine your own grade. But go to class and pay attention.
Great Prof.. Extremely helpful. Class is easy, you get to revise papers. Would totally recommend and take as many times as you can. Best prof at bloom prob
Please do NOT take this professor. I take a lot of English classes and he is the worst! He doesn't read any of the papers that you write. In the class you will spend hours doing re-writes and he never gets any of the papers back to you on time! This man is useless. He spends all his time on Facebook instead of reading and grading papers.
He is a great professor! He will go out of his way to help you, you are able to redo your paper to pull up your grade, he is extremly funny
this professor was one of the worst english teachers i've ever had. doesn't return any papers. In the end of the coarse our grade was based on only TWO things!
You get to revise the papers as many times as you want. The quizzes are hard but he doesn't really grade them. If you do the work assigned you will do fine
this guy knows his stuff. into to creative writing was a lot more interesting than i thought it would be. you'll learn a lot, but you'll do a lot of work too.
He expected ALOT. Thought he was not very clear when grading papers and barely gave any time to revise your papers.
LOVE this professor. Very upbeat and great class to take. It's not an easy A, but definitely a class worth taking. We did a graphic novels course and it was very exciting to read and go to class. Expects a lot for tests, quizzes & papers but its not too much to handle. Much easier then other Lit classes I've taken in the past.
not a fan of this prof, teaches you his style of writing and doesnt allow you to grow as a writer, yes you can revise your party multiple times but most of the time its his useless notes
I get sick to my stomach every time I read his ludicrous notes on my papers. They make no sense and his methods are equally ridiculous. "Nesting" is his prime method which he explains, if you use it in all your papers you'll receive a A grade. Don't get me wrong it can be useful but it should be the writers choice to use it, not to be forced.
easy if you do the work and follow his guidelines
Nice guy, but was extremely irritating during class discussions. Any time you would bring up a point, he'd dismiss it immediately and remind us why he was right and we were wrong. He was very snobby in that regard. Wouldn't recommend him.
Very good professor. I recommend taking his class. Uses 3 books and topics are very interesting. He is very helpful as long as your putting in the effort to get the help.
GREAT professor. One of my favorite at Bloomsburg. He picks apart your writing but it is definitely beneficial. I recommend him to everyone for composition courses!
Great professor. Make sure you go to class. He focuses on your actual writing, not grammar. Books are very interesting. A lot of work in the class for an 100 level, but it is well worth it. You learn a lot. Do all the work and go see him for help if you need it and you'll get an A. Many easier comp classes out there, but I loved this class.
Best professor I've had. He's extremely clear with his assignments, but its a lot of work. Several short essays, journal entries, and sometimes a bit too much to have to read for class, but over all it's a great class and I'd recommend him if you actually want to learn something
Nice guy but terrible professor. I advise not to take his class if you have the chose. The assignments are not clear at all and he rips apart your writing. He assigns a lot of work all at one time.
i agree with the last post. horrible class, if you want to learn how to do things right take this class with someone else
Most trustworthy, caring prof I've ever had. Extra helpful to students who love to write and want to be published. Ask specific questions to better understand the material.
had interesting class discussions about it. It may feel like he rips your writing apart at times. He pushes you to write your best and grades you on your writing improvements, not against anyone else and hardly focuses on grammar. You get to rewrite essays until you are happy w/ the grade(my class did anyway)
Very helpful professor. He gives a lot of short writing assignments that helps prepare you for the two long papers. You will read two books, both very good. Great professor overall!
I honestly didn't mind the professor even though at times he was extremely full of himself and rude. He's in your face about teaching which is very annoying. Writing papers for him is probably one of the most annoying, strenuous things I've done. He makes you revise like 10 drafts and rejects everything you write.
I loved Barrett! He was my favorite professor during the Summer Program 2012. He was funny and made class fun. He gave a lot of work, but it helped me to become a better writer every time I wrote another draft for his class. I ended up getting an A- on his fmal paper. LOVED HIM.
He's one of the nicest and most easy-going professor I have ever had! Take advantage of his office hours, he'll help you with anything you need!
He's a terrible professor. I never felt comfortable enough to go talk or ask for help. He's not approachable and very judgemental
GREATEST, NICEST, SWEETEST PROFESSOR EVER! If your a hard worker and you do the work will get a A. He only fails you if your lazy or don't do the work.He always available in his office hours. He's straight forward and SPECIFIC in his syllabus. He's the type of guy that you can have great conversations with. I wish he was my mentor.
Take his class! For three reasons: 1. He's hot and he has goregous eyes. 2. You can learn a lot from Barrett. 3. Barrett gives out take home quizzes , sometimes not always.
without a doubt my all time favorite professor. down to earth and genuinely cares about his students. i would recommend him for any english course. such a great dude!
I love Mr. Barrett his class keeps you awake. The work is easy he explains everything out and his office hours can help you even more. He's open to talk an=bout every and anything. We don't always do work either we play games in class for extra credit. Oh yeah he's always giving extra credit for the smallest things like looking up a word.
He is a rough teacher, but helps you with everything along the way. I get help from him all the time outside of class. He will rip your papers apart, but you get to fix them as many times as you want.
By far the best professor I've ever had.I had him over the summer in 2014. He's very easy to talk to, and although it may seem hes ripping your papers apart, if you listen to what hes telling you your drafts will be improve drastically each draft! SHOW that you're making an effort and be a hard worker and you'll pass easily with an A. I did!!
I really liked this class. Although, Barrett can be a tough grader but if you listen to his feedback your grade will definitely improve. Long essay is a pain and takes the second half of the semester. Very funny. Novel selection is good.
I haven't been in his class in over a year and I can not tell you how amazing this teacher is. You can talk about anything in your paper as long it's in the same theme range. I have learn more subjects in his class than I ever did at HACC (Harrisburg area community college).
I had Prof Barrett in Summer, and I felt like he assigned an outrageous amount of reading for such a short period of time. At the time, I wasn't sure how I felt about him, however I realize that he was very helpful and I learned a lot. I would take again.
He is like the best person in the world I really think that this guy is a very good professor and he should be Dean of college I really like this guy AMEN.
This is literally the coolest professor i have ever had. he honestly made me a better overall writer. He's informal (in a good way) and very down to earth. He is the type of professor to help with anything you need and especially in his office hours. To pass his class all you have to do is do his assignments and you'll pass (he gives many chances )
Had him for Writing 101. Think here, 101, intro to writing basically. He never taught us the types of writing. He expects you to write a research paper that is focused on the entire semester that is supposed to be (in his eyes) a senior research paper. Bounces all over the place with the paper. The vibe that his class is the only one that matters.
Definitely more work than I expected but I learned a lot and did well. Would definitely take again.
Professor Barrett is a great guy. However, he gives a lot of reading and quote analysis assignments which can be difficult. Makes class entertaining and is there if you need help.
Dr. Barrett has a way of making class interesting. He expects participation and challenges your ability to interpret literature. Allotted time for tests is not quite enough, however, he grades appropriately and allows for revisions of papers and exams. Between the couple comedians in class and Dr. Barrett, class was quite comical.
A professor that cares about what you have to say. You can say what is really on your mind and he won't judge, he'll embrace it. I read out loud one of the most crudest things I ever wrote and he loved it.
John is an amazing professor. If you have the opportunity to take him, jump on it right away! As long as you put in at least 15-30 minutes of work per day, you'll pass with an easy A.
He is the funniest and the best Writing 2 professor ever! I'd recommend that you take him if you have a passion for reading and writing essays.
You either love him or you hate him. There is no in-between! Don't take his class unless you're prepared to do tons of work. You have a syllabus of assignments, and he continues to give you in-class assignments and additional homework assignments almost every class.
really nice guy, always helpful with any question you may have, however this class is HARD! Barrett really makes you work with all of his worksheets and ongoing background projects. But I'm glad I got to learn writing from him, he's brilliant and passionate about everything he does, which made it the slightest bit easier.
I learned a lot in this class and had a lot of fun. He is a great teacher! :)
Dr. Barrett is by far the best professor I ever had. Most of class is discussion based, but he makes it so interesting. He does give a lot of reading, but its doable. You spend the entire semester writing your final paper. He gives you so much feedback it is impossible not to get an A. Hes always so understanding and willing to help.
This was the hardest class I ever took, but it is worth it. This class requires a lot of hard work but he's there to help you if you go to his office hours. He's a great guy and inspires you. Don't skip class and if you're frustrated, go to him. This class helped my writing skills tremendously. Lots of work, you'll get stressed but I recommend.
This was the most difficult class I've ever taken. You're guaranteed at least a B as long as you do your work, but BOY is there a lot of work. 60 pages out of the book this night, a 3 page paper the next. He grades harshly, but he does it for YOU. This man cares, he's inspiring, and I know I'll look back and think how his class was worth all of it.
Very condescending when answering your questions. Expects you to be 100% on top of surprises in class and on BOLT without reminders. Cancels class frequently for personal reasons and ends early most of the time. Rarely finished grading by the date he says. Had to be told by students to wear his mask (when we had in person). Avoid if possible.
Professor Barrett was by far one of the worst English Professors I have ever had. He took no consideration into the difficulties of learning online. He voiced how difficult his class was in comparison to classes that follow the enrichment course, which completely contradicts the idea of having an introductory level class in college writing.
He is horrible
It's an online 101 class, yet you are expected to write papers, journal prompts, and several discussion posts per week. Unsure where to find my grade and it's already past mid-semester. I've emailed several times to figure out where to find them. No clue what my midterm grade is. (he graded us on the midterm based on how well of a writer we are)
Dr. Barrett is the worst professor I've had. His office hours were limited even though it was a completely asynchronous class and has very unclear expectations. He lectured us that "this is how college is" and that students were not putting in enough effort, when he would not provide feedback on assignments until several weeks after the due date.
I never thought that I could have an English teacher that was worse than my 12th grade English teacher in high school. But low and behold, I get John Barrett. His "constructive criticism" is bullying. His assignment descriptions are unclear and I still am unaware of my grade for the class. The workload is ridiculous for a 101 class. He is awful.
John Barrett went through a lot this semester so I will cut him some slack. I will say it is ridiculous that the semester is almost over and I still don't know my grade in the class. He is terrible with responding to emails and his online announcements are very hard to follow.
Do not take him if you want to save your sanity. The assignments aren't clear and expect an artistic expression, but he is very picky and will leave awful comments if it's not what he wants exactly. It's impossible to please him. Also, forget about knowing your grade. Not one assignment is ever graded
Dr. Barrett was a great professor during the fall. I was able to sleep and class and put my feet on the chairs in front of me, as well as eat my daily morning oatmeal (this was an early class). He is very inspirational and really helped me in class. He also let me eat in class (oatmeal again, LOL). Thank you, Dr. Barrett! I will miss you!
I took this as an asynchronous online course. He assigns group projects to make videos while this is NOT a in person class. He makes meeting with him every so often, one on one mandatory for a grade. Rude criticism on work, wants creativity but if its not his version be prepared for a paragraph of insults.
worst professor ive ever had. I took this class 100% online and he expects you to read his announcements immediately after being posted and for you to begin the assignment immediately. gives paragraphs worth of him literally telling you your work is awful. Gives a huge load of work weekly and grades harshly. Nothing is good enough for him.
This professor makes you do so much work and thinks you only take his class. He also gets very angry when things aren't going his way and complains on what he calls weekday updates. Everything up until the final essay and quiz are for participation but when you get to that final essay he rips you a new one on everything. Overall don't take this cla
Barrett is a cool professor if you do your work. The only issue is that he doesn't realize I have other classes to worry about. Expect to turn in at least one thing a week, or more if he has them scheduled. Class wasn't fun, but manageable if you put a little effort and ask how he wants things done.
This guy is terrible. He takes forever to post assignments and then makes them due the next day. He takes month to give feedback on submitted papers. Always makes excuses for not having stuff done. Never answer his emails. Makes meeting with him mandatory and doesn't answer questions directly. Avoid this man at all costs.
Do not take a class with him!!! He is by far the worse professor i have ever taken, he always has terrible excuses about how he can not grade his work but expects us to complete so much work. I think he forgets we have other classes and he is a very harsh with his comments
This professor was the worst professor I have yet to have in my four years at this college. The amount of work he gives is insane and he acts like this is the only class he has. . Always made excuses for being late with feedback and did not move the due dates back even if he was weeks late with give feedback. Feed back also did not make sense.
He always took forever to write feedback and does not put the grade in the open, therefore you must go to his office hours. His grading is very harsh and he puts paragraphs worth long every time, nothing is ever good enough for him. He also always makes excuses and it makes it very difficult for online students. Also kind of creepy!
I had to report him to the Dean because it was week 13 and he didnt have anything graded. Takes forever to get back to your emails and doesnt answer questions that you have straight forward. Had to withdrawal because I didnt know where I stood in the class until I reported him to the Dean. Much better professors and easier english courses to take.
This guy clearly writes his own ratings if there is 48 people who said he was awesome. Maybe thats why he took so long to grade stuff or answer emails because he was too busy looking at his ratemyprofessor.
I highly recommend avoiding this teacher. He is very unclear and does not communicate his expectations well. It's frustrating that he leaves lengthy paragraphs of feedback, which can be discouraging. He does not provide enough support for online students. also, there are no grades. don't be a writing teacher and not do your job.
I dont know what this guy does in his free time that he cannot put grades in or answer emails. Very unprofessional on his part. He acts like this is the only class his students have, and also acts like its the most important. If you don't read ahead he says you aren't a "real college student." He got better towards end of semester. Avoid this class
I have never been a good writer at all but when I did have questions he was always quick to help. At first I thought the class was hard until I talked to him, he clarified and actually helped. He gives a lot of feedback and that can be discouraging, he truly is helpful if you talk to him! Overall great dude!
I would never take him again. Does not put in any grades, saying he does not give below a B because he "Doesn't believe in grades" but then fails students. Makes you buy books, if you do not read ahead in the books he says you're a bad student. Thinks we don't have any other classes to worry about. Gives a lot of work for a gen ed class.
Not a bad guy , but for an Ed courses the amount of homework a me exams he gives is absurd.
Provides unclear feedback, frequently changes criteria in the syllabus by word of mouth--if you aren't in class, good luck keeping track. He often contradicts himself and his grading criteria. I had to reach out to the department chair to find out what my grade was in the class-- by week 13 I still didn't know. Don't recommend.
nastiest professor.doesnt make instructions clear then will spend entire class calling his students very nasty names and rip everyones papers.has so many personal issues he brings to class.never puts grades in but will give you 3 essays a week.wont give instructions on what to do but then will call you a terrible student for not reading his mind.
it made me want a lobotomy so much. he starts his feedback with "don't take this feedback to heart, I am only grading what I read, not the person who wrote it" and made me absolutely ball my eyes out. he will take weeks on end to reply to emails and when it does its so rude. he also always talks about how famous his dad was and how famous he is.
