fun old guy? what else? gets to pt but notes can be confusing sumtimes
first test was easy. next two were killer. nice guy though
Finds fun ways of teaching you so you don't get bored. Very helpful and approachable. Genuinely interested in if we're learning the material or not and what questions we are having with it. He's great!
Great guy, but boring, boring, lectures. He likes to teach on an elementary level and then surprise you with very difficult tests. Watch out for this. He does not give you a review, he does not give old tests to refer to, he give no direction as to what to study what so ever. 'Big picture.' Awful.

He interacted a lot with the class by playing games and doing demonstrations, which was always fun. His notes were a little scattered. It's a given that you have to study hard for this class. The main thing about him was that he taught the basics and everything else you had to learn on your own from the book and discussion.
Teaches at a very elementary level but surprises you with really hard tests. I recommend just not going to class and reading your book. He gave no curve until the final only like 10 points. dont recommend this teacher at all.
He tries to help you learn the material with really basic lectures, but he expects you to go back and fill in what he didn't cover by reading the book.
This wasn't an easy"don't do any work" kind of class but its not impossible either. he outlines exactly what you should read on the syllabus. He's a nice guy. His tests are kinda hard but if you read the material you'll do fine.
He was a great professor. If you use his powerpoints as a guide and read the book along with the topics he covered by them, you will do just fine. This class gets you to think and prepares you for what is to come.
His lectures were easy and simple but his tests were killer! Reading the book is the only way to do good in this class. He gives NO CURVE at the end or in any of his tests!!!! That's what I hated about him!
Knows what he is talking about, but tests us like we do too. Elementary lectures which make you think tests are elementary... wrong! Tests are extremely difficult and you must read the book line-by-line and understand what you are reading. Tried different study methods for each test and still haven't found the way to get an A. Not recommended!!!
First of all he is a nice person. However, that has no effect on how well he can teach. This is a class where you teach yourself, for extra clarification go to class and TA office hours (My TA was NOT helpful and you could barely understand him.) The tests are a complete different format from the material he presents which makes them very difficult
horrible teacher, just posts slides out of book. takes attendance with iclicker questions. test are really hard, tough worded questions. quizzes every friday. dont take unless you extremely smart and study 20 hours a day.
Nice guy. Keeps lectures interesting for the most part. The PowerPoint material is easy to grasp, though in order to know answers on the tests you need to know everything in the text as well as how to put the information you know into different situations. Tests us like we have PhDs. Weekly quizzes on Friday and daily iClicker questions.
decently nice guy, but he rambles in lectures and has a really boring, monotonous voice. tests are super-tricky and you gotta READ READ READ if you want to get better than a C. doesn't curve, either. don't take him.
This professor was ridiculously hard! I wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you REALLY REALLY REALLY like spending hours alone with your biology text. Lectures are super easy, but the tests are SUPER hard!!!!
His lectures are very very easy compared to the exams. His exams are difficult and require rigorous studying. He doesn't curve at all, which is not good if you are close to a grade cutoff. If you don't plan on studying nonstop for this class, take a different professor.
this professor is hard. this test are strictly application, so don't plan on memorizing and getting a good grade. You have to study continously, do not get behind in the material because its hard to catch up. this class is alot of info. he does not curve any exams except final. if you have a choice do NOT take this teacher.
He is a very nice guy and wants to help as much as he can during office hours. His lectures are easy to understand and not too boring. However, his tests are IMPOSSIBLE. DO NOT take his class if you want to have a good GPA. If you take his class you will spend all your free time reading the book.
Genetics lab is a pretty touch class with the weekly quizzes and the major paper that you work on throughout the semester. However, making a A or a high B is pretty manageable. The exams for the class were fair. You get a manual which has pretty much everything you need. There are weekly lectures but hardly anyone goes. The labs are fun.
Its a pretty straightforward Bio class, theres no homework, 4 tests and a final, and quizzes every week that can drop your lowest test grade. He covers material pretty fast, but posts all the power-points online, if you make any sort of effort you should be able to pass.
Probably the nicest man you'll ever meet and the easiest-sounding class you'll sign up for ("bio for non-science majors") but do NOT let that fool you. What should be a basic class for students not interested in biology is an "easy" class with four nightmarish tests that you will not expect. I studied for HOURS and am just scraping by with a C.
I wanted to like Molecules to Organsims, but Batterton made it hard. Lectures are highly disorganized. I basically had to teach myself from the textbook, but the TA discussion sections saved me. More than once the TA corrected things Batterton had taught incorrectly in lecture. Tests were difficult. Wish I had better things to say for this class.
Memorize the powerpoints, and go to discussion. Textbook is helpful & will teach you about 80% of the material, but you can't get an A from it only. Know every word and illustration in the PPTs. Also, Prof. Batterton is a cute, sweet old man. But he makes mistakes & leaves things out of his lectures. Ask the TA for clarification at discussion.
Batterton was an interesting and personal professor. I still walked out not liking science, but he made the class more enjoyable just the same. The kids who studied and did well on the tests. The tests make up the entire grade but the quizzes can be redeeming. He swaps your average quiz grade for your lowest test grade. My TA was super helpful.
He was not too great at explaining the material in depth and would just touch on each topic briefly. Mostly on you to study and learn the material on your own and believes his entire class is mainly a review (because you already know everything, which you probably don't) . Wasn't too engaging but always nice and approachable
Batterton was an okay professor. I took bio for non science majors and I think the problem was he spoke very technical and it was hard to understand basic concepts at times. He also said he textbook was optional (so I did not buy it), but a few test and quiz question were ALWAYS based on the textbook readings, so beware of that.
Batterton is probably the nicest, most laid-back professor at UT. 4-5 tests plus a final, make sure you understand the powerpoint slides 100%, all questions come from those. Quizzes every friday as long as there is no test- can only help you, your quiz average replaces lowest test grade if it helps- if not it goes away. Class is easy if you try.
Any good biology class requires you to do work and this class is no different. His tests can be hard but as long as you study the powerpoints you should be fine. It's definitely not an Easy A but you definitely WILL learn from him. He is very sweet and willing to help whenever you need it. I really loved this class and I highly recommend him.
He's such a sweet professor willing to help you! I personally had a hard time in his class cause I didn't really keep up; if you study lectures after class and are a diligent studier, you should do fine on his test. About everything was based off of Campbell's 10th edition Biology book, so I would suggest you get your hands on a copy/pdf.
Dr. Batterton is a nice guy who really cares about helping his students understand the material. This class requires a TON of reading, and you can get all info. from textbooks. Powerpoint slides are also CRUCIAL for tests. If it's on the ppt, it's on the test. Every detail. I never went to class and got an A. His tests aren't THAT bad.
Quizzes every Friday. MUST study for them, especially the little details! The tests are really hard and have ambiguous questions. Nice prof though.
This professor cares about what he is teaching but does an ok job at it. Every class read and took notes on the book chapters covered. For tests I would study those notes and know his power points like the back of your hand. However, even after knowing that I'm still did not do as well as I feel I deserve for my work. Very hard tests.
Dr. Batterton is very nice and more than willing to help you if you need it! But, there's lots of lectures and pretty hard tests (lots of application questions). Most helpful things I can say is to study hard, truly understand the material, and go to office hours.
Dr. Batterton is a sweet man who cares about his students and will help you at office hours. Some of the questions on his tests (and especially his quizzes) are tricky, but if you put in the effort and really know the material on the powerpoints then you will be fine. He offers 3 points of bonus on each test and curves the tests when necessary.
Dr. Batterton has a very monotone voice so it is hard to focus in class. His lectures are just powerpoints that he post online after class, which is very helpful because he goes too fast in class to be able to keep up. His test are extremely difficult and you wont pass unless you put in serious work on your own to understand the material.
His tests are tricky and he speeds through lectures (which he just reads off the powerpoint). His curves make no sense, people whose original test grade was a B- end up getting a higher grade than someone with a B or B+ after the curve. Would not recommend unless you took AP bio and can teach yourself.
Dr. Batterton is a very sweet man and wants you to succeed in his class. There are three tests which are fairly challenging but if you have taken AP Bio you should be fine. There are also quizzes and participation matters. I would recommend getting the textbook but overall Batterton does a good job of explaining and posts his lecture slides.
Lectures are boring and overall very hard to keep up with. The last time I took a biology class was freshman year in high school. If you took AP Bio you should be fine. If not be ready to read or get another professor.
Batterton is a great guy and is very passionate about what he teaches. He occasionally tells stories in class time to balance out dense lectures. Read the lecture slides again before exams to review and you'll be fine!
Do not take him. I didn't take AP Bio in high school, and most of the people in the class did so they were okay with an awful teacher. His lectures are boring and in a monotone voice read off the powerpoint. His tests are impossibly hard even if you think you know all the information and study your butt off. You will not get an A if you take him.
Very average class. Most things on the test he goes over in his power points. If you read the book alongside the powerpoints you will do well in his class. Lectures are slow paced and not extremely interesting.
Batterton is stubborn and inconsistent- he doesn't listen to feedback from TAs or students, and the exam difficulty greatly varies from test to test. Lectures are mostly dry and difficult to follow; textbook is a must-read. I'm good at bio so did well, but it's a tough class. But he's nice enough and his TAs are amazing. Not an awful choice.
Genial older gentleman. His lectures aren't the most interesting, but I've had much drier teachers. Powerpoint-based. Read the chapter from the textbook, and then go through the slides. Not all that difficult. Overall, a fair class and a good man.
This class is meant to be taken by liberal arts majors, so I was hoping it wouldn't be too challenging. The lectures are long and heavy, and because he speaks in a monotone voice, it is hard to focus. He's a really nice guy, but his tests are impossible because they are much more in depth than the lectures are. He also doesn't give +/- grades.
Don't take this class. It is supposed to be for liberal arts/ non science majors but it's incredibly challenging. He seems like a nice guy but his teaching style is very poor and will leave you confused and frustrated. The tests and quizzes are really hard and consist more of chemistry than anything else. Regretsssss
WE AREN'T SCIENCE MAJORS. class is impossible to study for- teacher is terrible- no curve on impossible tests.
Batterton can be hard to follow but he genuinely cares about his students and will do so many demonstrations to help get points across or to jazz up lecture. Unlike others, he walks around the lecture hall to interact with kids and answer questions. Yes, its hard but biology is hard for non-science people. The tests are purely over the powerpoints
Batterton is soft spoken so it is sometimes difficult to pay attention in class. However, he is attentive to questions in class and walks around to talk to students when there are activities. His tests heavily rely on his powerpoints which he posts online after the class. He does quickly go through the notes which sometimes makes it difficult.
Batterton is a really caring and passionate professor. I would say his only fault is that he covers a large amount of material in lecture but the tests are very specific.
Batterton is so nice but rambles a bit. Tests are very hard and no curve. You are graded on nothing but tests and things will show up you've never heard of.
Extremely kind and fair professor! Tests are HEAVILY based off the lecture powerpoints and extra credit is provided. They were fair if sufficient effort is put in. He provides opportunities to pick your grade back up with additional extra credit opportunities.
I'm mixed about Batterton. Had him for 311C and D. His lectures are dry and not very helpful. The degree of difficulty of exams varies a lot. But, he was VERY generous in giving out EC and other things to boost your grade. My advice is to take good textbook notes and attend TA reviews. Hard class, but not too hard.
Tests are really confusing, but it is doable if you study the minute details from the powerpoints.
Dr. Batterton seems like a nice guy. He occasionally makes jokes, but his lectures are monotonous. He doesn't have a characteristic excitement or energy when he speaks about biology, but he's also an older man. Rarely any homework. Tests aren't bad, but they are specific. READ the textbook and take notes in class. His slides have extra info.
Dr. Batterton is a really funny, dry humor professor. He is identical to every biology teacher I have ever had and he is respectful of all his students which was really appreciated. He has review sessions before tests that are helpful and if you take good notes and re-read the slides after lecture, you will be absolutely fine.
Batterton is a really sweet guy and tries to make his lectures interesting by doing demonstrations. He also has such a dry sense of humor, which makes lecture more fun. Two bad things I would say about this class: in-class quiz every two weeks and tests are SO hard. Tests usually have nothing to do with class material, so good luck.
I love Batterton, he is very sweet, caring and has a dry sense of humor. But his lectures are very hard and specific and too little time! Pretty much you need to know the lecture slides like the back of your hand and I tend to read the book because he went by the lectures very fast. Overall nice guy personality-wise but tough exams for Intro bio
Great professor. The lectures are interesting, he has a great sense of humor, and he has pretty decent demonstrations. The tests aren't too bad, the multiple choice can be difficult, but the free response comes straight from his power points and you have options on which ones you do. Points are given generously and tests are curved.
I had to drop this class!! You can study for weeks and then the test makes no sense. He gives quizzes every other Thursday so that you have on opportunity to raise your grade but the quizzes are awful too! His wording is just really confusing and random to the point that I'm like WHY?!?
Dr. Batterton is a sweet old man who says the same jokes and likes to tell stories in class. His lectures are boring and doesn't say anything different than what's on the powerpoint (posted online). He goes fast through the slides so I don't take notes in class. Discussion is pointless but attendance is mandatory. Tests are AP bio difficulty level.
I personally really liked professor batterton and his teaching style. His lectures are boring but hes a super nice old guy who is very approachable. There is almost no homework at all and everything you need to know for tests/quizzes can be found on his power points so I never used the book. Quizzes are hard but tests are fair.
WORST PROFESSOR TO TAKE AT UT. Exams are extremely difficult and do not reflect what you learn in class whatsoever. You have to read the textbook and truly understand the material at almost a graduate level. Definitely try to avoid taking this professor if possible.
Very kind and caring man, but not the best teacher. Just goes over slides in class and tests are way too hard. Would not take again.
Alright--lot of mixed reviews on Batterton. Here's the real deal. He's a REALLY helpful professor, one of the best BIO311C profs. But won't get a pretty grade just handed to you. You gotta work for it. Tests are *entirely* application based--that's why most people struggled. Point blank: if you work to understand the material, you'll be FINE.
Lectures aren't necessary because he posts all powerpoints on Canvas right after class, and the textbook is a better resource, but they are worth going to. You will learn in them, and although many times he drones on, he is hilarious in a very dry way. While many don't like him, I did. Be warned, test questions can be worded to confuse you.
Dr. Batterton is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. His class is very difficult and you will have to go further in depth than what is given to you in the powerpoints to understand. Although I hate biology, I learned a lot in this course. His TA's are wonderful, especially Caitlin. The textbook is your friend. Difficult but doable.
I usually don't write reviews, just don't take this class please. His test are really hard even if you genuinely study the material beforehand. You need to have prior knowledge of biology coming in, and the final was ridiculously hard. You will not do well in this course, if you don't put time into it day in and day out.
His lectures are terrible. And the tests are a nightmare. For an intro class this is one of the absolutely worse I've taken. Very boring and felt like I didn't learn a single thing. Biggest complaint is his test are written like if a college freshman wrote them. Basic grammar is important for clarity.
Dr. B is a really sweet guy who loves questions and will try to get to know you. In class he just reads straight from the powerpoint, and the tests don't correlate to the level of difficulty in class. Final was impossibly hard, class average failed. Would recommend taking another professor, if you're not coming in with AP bio background.
His first test is easy and straight forward but the rest are hard in comparison, difficulty varies tremendously. He reads off slides and emphasizes on stuff that he doesn't even put on the test. Tests have free response so if you do take him make sure you go over the slides and know how to draw and explain everything. Quizzes are ok if you study
Batterton is a really sweet old man, but his tests are all application based. The 1st test is pretty easy but the last two are very challenging. His final is near impossible to get a good grade on (the average for my class was failing). If you can, get a different professor unless youre willing to put in a lot of work.
This class was the hardest class I've ever taken and I had to drop it. He is the nicest man I've ever met but his class was extremely difficult unless youve taken AP Bio. Not a good entry level class, tons of info you're expected to know, and tests are extremely specific.
There are three tests and a final in this class and there are quizzes every two weeks, all of which are pretty difficult and are heavily based on application. Dr. Batterton does normally curve the exams and then drops the lowest test and replaces it with the average of the three tests. The lectures can be boring but it is important to go to them.
I took this class because it's required for my major - Biology. It was one of the hardest classes I've taken in my life. It was also super discouraging because I felt like I could never get the hang of how to study for his tests. He doesn't push reading the textbook at all, but make sure you read!! I wish I would've discovered this sooner.
Hared class I took at UT. Pop quiz every other week , three exams and a final. Everyone failed the final it was a 100 question CUMULATIVE EXAM.... it was impossible. Horrible class, all exams were application questions like the MCAT. DO NOT TAKE, will not prepare you for his exams.
Batterton is a really sweet and caring guy. He offered extra credit, and honestly you won't fail this class if you put in the work. I had him for 309D The Human Body which is for non science majors. It was difficult in the sense that you definitely can't just review the slides the day before exam, but as long as you study you will be fine.
A genuinely good guy, not the best teacher though. Rushes through slides even when it's obvious most of the class hasn't finished taking notes. Quizzes and tests are harder than they need to be with a lot of application stuff that wasn't effectively covered in class. I took him for non-science and i'd wager most of the class was unhappy with grade.
I'll cut to the chase: BIO 311C/D are horribly taught at UT and there is no GREAT professor. This being said, Batterton's personality makes him worth taking and while his class is tough, it is very very possible to get an A.
Every single detail discussed in class will appear on a test so lots of study time needed. That being said, I didn't think the course was as awful as everyone else. Test questions are straight from his powerpoints so it's just memorization. I'd recommend not to take it your freshmen year because you'll need good time management skills to do well.
He was alright. Pretty easy A if you actually put in the time and work. He can sometimes be a little boring with his lectures but he is really nice and approachable.
So idk why this guy has such bad ratings. I was scared going in but have been doing totally fine. Tests are very fair and you can get A's if you really apply yourself and learn the concepts. Him and his TA's really care and they are all really great.
I took the first exam, and thought "wow" because of the level of difficulty it was. However, I realized my mistake of not studying enough, and began studying harder for the following two exams in which I did really well on. Before the final, I had an A-, and lots of motivation to get the A since I had been studying for weeks. The final sucked tho.
By far my toughest class last semester. Lectures get boring as the semester goes on, and way too much information is covered in them. He really does try his best to teach but getting an A won't be easy. The first two tests weren't bad but the last test and the final were extremely hard. There is a curve to help you out but be ready to study.
Dr. Batterton is a very kind man who tried to make lectures a bit more interesting at times with demonstrations and fishing stories. However, this class was way too intense for an intro class--especially if you're coming in without AP bio level knowledge. Tests are HARD but there's a small curve and the final is a 100 questions exam. Good luck!
Dr. Batterton is super nice and incredibly funny! Lectures can get boring, though. Exams are curved and pretty difficult. Final is 100 questions long and also difficult. He teaches basic chemistry very strangely, but he gets better afree teaching basics. Pretty rigorous course, but if you try, you'll do great (especially with such good TAs)!
Lectures are really boring/ rushed through, he posts slides so I never took notes in class. Textbook helped connect concepts but restated things in lectures. Quizzes are straight forward but very specific in word choice. Tests are all application and challenging but you'll score high if you really study. Final wasn't that bad if you study hard.
Lecture is so boring. He talks so softly you cant even hear whats going on. The tests and quizzes are very hard, and application based. The tests cover so much random info that doesnt even work together. Studying for 3 weeks wouldnt have helped me. Wouldnt recommend.
Initially, I thought it was a terrible class, but if you study on your own by taking notes on the powerpoint AND using the textbook you will be fine. The second I started using the textbook I went from low B's on my exams to very high A's. I didn't go to class much because lecture was boring. A self-teaching course, but totally doable.
Batterton was a really nice guy but the class was pretty tough... If you don't study hard for the tests and quizzes you won't do very well at all, but if you DO study hard/understand topics it's very manageable. Biology is pretty hard on its own, but that will be the case for any professor. He's a sweet old guy though and he tries his best to help
This class was unnecessarily hard, and I spent a significant amount of time studying for it. Lectures are very in depth and he expects to recall and be able to apply every single detail mentioned in a lecture on tests and quizzes. He goes really fast, and often uses stories or metaphors to explain things, which I found more confusing than helpful.
he is a really sweet guy but not the best teacher. however, if you put in the time to study the lecture powerpoints, you can do well in the class. also, I don't recommend buying the entire textbook (only masteringbiology for hw) unless you need further clarification on something, because it is really expensive and not necessary
