Man, he's sure give lots of homework. During the class he's like to walk back and forth and dancing or sometime(most of the time) make me feel like on the boat and ready to trow up at anytime. pretty strict about grammar. assignment reading most of the time. but he's nice though...
He's a very nice teacher and helpful when it comes to writing essays, but he loves to give homework! We also did a lot of reading!
I had troubles with his type of writings. It was inconsistant with what i was used too. The class I took was half online so i felt like he rushed things in class and we never really go tmcuh done. I felt he put emphasis on parts of stories or things we read that needed no emphasis. Like the sex parts, or the swearing. overall he was a pretty nice

He is very articulate and requires students to atleast try to raise their awareness about deeper themes in class discussions. He is not hard, he just wants participation. Not everyone will get an A in his class but, you will learn a lot for sure. If his lectures get boring you can always focus on how striking he is; super hot :)
VERY NICE TEACHER!!! Helpful and friendly. Assignments are easy but some what frequent. Easy to pass. One of my favorite teachers!
VERY NICE TEACHER!!! Helpful and friendly. Assignments are easy but some what frequent. Easy to pass. One of my favorite teachers!
He is interesting and expressive. Very helpful both before and after class. Do not expect this to be an easy class. He is also an english teacher and may seem critical but he is helping you in the long run. He really enjoys teaching and helping students. This is a rare type you wont want to miss out on this class. oh yeah very hot too!!!
He is one of the most amazing English teachers I ever had. He gives assignment sheet with very clear explanation. He often gives lots of feedback to students which means a heavy load of HW everyday. You will never get a break. But if you want to improve your writing skill in a short period of time I would recommend him for sure:)
He is great, so long as you agree with him. If you do not agree that women are second class citizens you will find it hard to pass his class. He is not a Mythology teacher! Take it from Kumar, he is far better. John lacks objectivity and only supports student comments that are in line with his. Don't take classes from him!
he isnt nice
He is a great and fun teacher!
He's pretty talketive and basically explains all the themes behind everything. we read "the middle passage" for class and he just went through line by line of all the important parts before the essay. His essays are crystal clear, his directions for essays are like 6 pages single spaced. I love this guy. he's a good looking guy too, so that's good
He's a hard grader and gives LOTS of homework. but he is nice and very leanent. If you try hard, you'll get good grades. but he's a critical teacher.
he is a very nice teacher... if you want to improve your writing skill, take his class.... I'M SURE, you will learn something..... but, he is hard......GD LUCk
If you take his class be prepared for tons of homework and mandatory presence in his class to listen to him lecture for an hour. He claims to give help outside of class, but I approached him several times and he never made time. He examines essay topics thoroughly in class and on assignment sheets which is extremely helpful. Learning is inevitable.
I took his online class. John's an awesome English prof. You actually LEARN in his class, but if you want an easy A this isnt the class for you. He makes sure you work for your grade, but if you have any questions he's right there to help you out. Lots of homework, so keep up! loved the class and I would talk another with him in a heartbeat!
I did not Perfer this teacher at all. The Subjects We talked on in class were not helpful.
Great teacher, you will love him
Expect a LOT of homework! Assignments and expectations are very clear. I took the class online and felt that there was too little interaction with him. When he did give feedback on assignments, it was very, very thorough. But feedback was few and far between.
He is HOT!! he explains everything very good and clear. I don't like writing but he made the class awesome! very interesting and helpful! will take him anytime if i need to
I took this class online, and there was a decent amount of work involved. We had four essays in this class and workshops with file exchange which helped. John was available for any questions throughout the quarter, and made sure instructions were clear.
I took this class online and it was pretty unremarkable. It was on the easy side, with the hardest work being the essays. If you're already pretty good with English you won't learn a whole lot, but you learn some specific things about grammar and you get to read some interesting pieces.
Mr. Baumgartner has been extremely helpful. I am currently in his online class and love it. He explains everything very well, is always flexible, responsive, and realistic. I would recommend him to anyone and love to take another one of his classes.
I really don't like his class tho. He's fun- sometime. He gave us loads of homework, and the final essay was really hard. If you're not an overachiever on writing English, DO NOT take his class.
Awesome teacher whose passion and vivaciousness eek into his teaching. Although English could get to be a drag, he was at least extremely accommodating when taking his class a second time.
John is clear when he says his directions. He's a very hard grader. The bad thing about the class is he has too many assignments. some are helpful and some are not. If your are not passionate about english, i recommend to pass on the class.
I love this teacher, probably the best I've had so far. He was very helpful and he went over everything in class, if you attend class, writing the essays are not hard at all because he explains everything.
Really knows his stuff and is very helpful. To succeed you must attend class regularly and be willing to put your best foot forward. Tough grader but I learned a lot from him that I can apply to the rest of my college endeavors. Excellent teaching style, interesting content and fun class. Would be difficult for a foreign student.
he not supportive at all like after class he was hardly and when he was around he didnt even to point out my mistakes or try to help on essays. he missed out on class and then he pushes work at the last minute and he uses too many excuses for it.sandy is way better than he is for a teacher. people he not that great and dont waste moey on him.
Not helpful at all. Avoid at all cost. It's been awhile since I took his class, but I would say he was the worst teacher I had ever met. Inconsistently he pushed everything in a last minute. Emphasized on things very useless and irrelavant to the essay topic he assigned. Overally, very irrelavant, and incoherent to what he teaches in a class
He grades really harsh. Do not take his class if you are an international student. He has a lot of homework which help you learn. However, he does not explain the context throughly. I can not understand his expectation of an A student.
He is a good guy and wants to teach, but the quarter is too short for him. We are supposed to write 3 essays and a final essay. Today has been the last day of school and he hasn't graded the 2nd essay. I have no idea what Im going to do on my final. And he grades hard. To be hones the higher grade he gave was an A-.
helpless I can't find anything helpful from his class
He's one of the best English teachers I've come across. He has strict policies on attendance and expects his students to work hard. He can be extremely helpful but you have to ask for help and not just expect it. He's a great teacher with valuable resources if you are committed to your own success.
He's a great teacher and is very skilled in English. However, if English is not your first language he can be very frustrating because he teaches with the assumption that you fully understand English. I would not recommend for students just out of ESL.
If you're willing to put forth the effort needed for this course, you'll definitely succeed. John's an excellent prof, best English prof I've had, with a real passion for the subject that shows, and awesome reading selections. He's clear and thorough in his instructions and expectations for students, gives detailed feedback, helps whenever asked.
John is a good prof and loves english. Yes, he will bleed all over your essays but it's mostly just comments. I got an A on mine & you couldn't even see my essay anymore. He's not too bad on grading, just listen to his lectures. Also, he is very understanding with absences and extensions; communicate with him, he loves that. It's a solid class.
Material and concepts were not difficult. However, I question his methods. Spent the first five wks analyzing 1 essay from textbook, and finally 5 wks in he started grading things we turned in the 1st week. His lack of grading caused class to fall behind by 2 wks. Friendly/helpful/open/knowledgeable teacher, but clearly had an overloaded schedule.
At least up through the 7th week, the main topics of class were racism and sexism. Although he entertained ideas other than his own, they were often responded to in an almost condescending manner. Didn't learn a whole lot about English, but had to use my already-developed critical thinking skills to process everything he claimed.
Somewhat helpful... he doesn't focus on grammar so much. Most class times are discussions of topics. Topics so far are 1) ecofeminism, and 2) white privilege. It definitely feels like he has an agenda, which is frustrating. Hw is mostly online discussion forum, plus a couple of papers over the quarter. Very willing to give extensions.
Teacher has no time management - honestly, it's very frustrating. Our class got 5 weeks behind because he cannot grade our first essay within a month and a half of turning it in. With 2 weeks left in the quarter, we're supposed to write a 3rd essay when we don't even have a grade for our first essay yet?!?!
(1) It's two days before the final, and no feedback on essay two. (2) If he doesn't like you, or if you answer incorrectly, he gets passive aggressive and mocks you in class. (3) It appears that he grades on how much he agrees with your point, not on your grammar/writing ability. (4) He refused to help a student who asked for feedback. Like, what.
Very unorganized. Essay 3 is due tomorrow and we haven't received grades for essay 2 yet (which is a proposal for essay 3). Wants you to write EXACTLY according to his style, which means that you have little freedom. Grades insanely hard, and this comment comes from a student who has aced all his English classes.
He's awesome. He's really friendly and helpful.
Good teacher, although his clarity in class was hard to follow and graded mostly on grammar and structure. He sent me pages of feedback when I took his class and I enjoyed him marking up my work. Very helpful and understanding.
John is AWESOME! I enjoyed his class. He is very helpful. He gives you tons of feedback on your essays. There were only 3 essays + the final in-class essay. John is very passionate for English language and creative writing. He is easy going and very understanding. Take his class if you have a chance! :)
At first I thought his class would be troublesome; however, I found that as long as you actively participate and sow that you pay attention and learn the class comes easy. He also doesn't really care about late assignments haha.
Cool guy, but, frankly, bad teacher. The quarter is almost finished and he has yet to grade a single assignment, including essays. It's impossible to know how you're doing in his class. He gives no feedback whatsoever on assignments, and seems really put-out when asked for help. Seemingly a really typical guy, and funny, but don't expect much help.
You will do good in this class if you speak out and share your opinions off the bat. I was not pleased with his teaching methods but he is a great person.
Not a very effective communicator for an English professor. Gave 2 options for topic of essay number two and I chose option 2 and he told me I should have picked 1. Overall he isn't very helpful, when I asked about the mistakes in my essay I was told to figure it out for myself. Went on to pass with a 2.5, then passed English 102 with a 3.5.
John is an awesome guy and a decent teacher. He cares about what he is teaching, and I took a composition class, so there was definitely a ton of essays. Overall a "do-able" class. He's very passionate about what he's teaching.
He was an interesting teacher, but gave long readings and lectures. I wouldn't have a problem with them too if i liked the subject. He is not a teacher that will let you out early and often kept us in longer then the class time. it's a passable class but you have to be ready to work.
The class was unbiased and considerate of all perspectives. The instructor was fair in his grading. He gives the appropriate amount of work for a college level course. He goes beyond himself in his consideration of others in regard to assure that they succeed without favoritism. He takes the time to fuse past ideals with modernity for relevancy. A+
1)This is not a class for you if you don't like to present and share your thoughts in front of the whole class. (most of the time) 2) This is not a class for you if you don't expect a final for english 101 3)
He is nice and funny sometimes, you can learn a lot from him!
He all over the place and the class I took was for "critical reading" and he treated it like a grammar class and it was all just a mess. Even though I did get an A... I wish I would have learned more before going to my English 101 class.
John is a very nice guy. In his class, he relied on the students to share their opinions almost every day. He is a very slow grader, but the feedback is worth the wait. John also assigns online discussion forums which are easy to complete. Make sure to pay attention in class as it will help with the essays.
Please don't ever never take this class!!!! I'm warning you right now. If you don't want to argue about All THE SENSITIVE SUBJECT like FEMINISM and RACE and RELIGION in his whole class. This class will take 3 times more time than your normal English classes and he will give you B or C for your essay that took you one week! Also, He's Feminist!
It was the biggest mistake I've ever done in my life that I took this class!!!!! If you enjoy being stressed, this class is yours! Don't think you'll be fine, I was like you. But you're not different! I thought these people commenting here are just lazy people. But it's not!!! For real! Seriously!!! DO NOT TAKE IT!! I hope I can go back to past!!!
I guess it really depends on the kind of person you are, but I did not like him or his class at all. If you like group work, and going up in front of the class to share your work, then take him! Reading the work he gives you is extremely important. For my class, he assigned 3 essays. He cares more about sentence structure and grammar than content.
Really detailed feedback. Interesting subjects in class.
He was really good and knowledgeable about the subject of film, and gave really good feedback on the papers. My main problem with him is he had really bad time management and saved the last two papers and a film project and a revision project of our first essay for the last two weeks of class. If you're good at writing essay's, I recommend him.
English is the degree path I plan to follow. John was friendly and did his best to be engaging with the class, who were mostly unenthusiastic about the material. He focused the class on feminist issues, which many students took issue with, but I found quite interesting and relevant. He gave lots of feedback and with it, I earned full points.
John is a great teacher full of energy. He put lots of effort and energy to make subject clear but he is very hard grader. He gives great feed backs and I improve my writing based on his comments. In my opinion, His only cons is the low grades he gives.
John is a very nice person with a lot of energy. However, her lectures can be sometimes boring. There is a lot of reading and writing required, but he does move die dates, to give us more time.
John was a great professor! The topics we discussed were very interesting. We did write 3 essays but as long as you try youll get a good grade on them. Seems like the class is hard at first but is actually doable.
John is a good professor, but he is very opinionated and it reflects in his grading process. We wrote an essay based on our course materials and we were required to choose a standpoint on how (dis)empowering the book was. For those who chose disempowering, he told them to change their standpoint. He cares more about grammar&structure than content.
Very political, only focused on political topics (BLM, Women's rights, etc.) assumed everyone was liberal in his class. Too many papers, lecture heavy. Was very funny, and had his moments where I enjoyed his class. He really wasn't too bad just did not enjoy the lecture/paper topics as I feel politics should not be in an English class.
John cares about his students and gives insightful lectures that make you think about the world. His essays are worth most of your grade and can be hard- but he wants you to be successful and will help you get there. I'm sad to leave his class, John made English fun and I learned a lot of new perspectives.
John was helpful and provided opportunities to talk to him for personal help on essays. He focused his class on debatable and controversial subjects to keep everyone engaged. Hes tough and slow on essay grades but puts the effort into his feedback to ensure improvement. Also pushes due dates back if he hasn't graded everyone's papers beforehand.
Be prepared to start work on the very first day as he packs a lot of content into a quarter. He is very professional and gives 110% to students and expects the same in return. Super fair and flexible if you communicate with him but don't fall behind because it would be brutal to catch up. The reading topics are bold and interesting.
Do the work and show up. Assignments set you up for essays, just need to choose argument.
Worst class I have ever taken. Didn't listen to any student suggestions and took over a month to grade essay 1. Literally 41 days and now Essay 2, 3, AND the final project are all due the same week (FINALS WEEK!?!). If you want to get beyond stressed & have 600 points of stuff due in the last week then this class is for you!
He's a really nice guy, but don't let looks fool ya. He is a tough grader. No extra credit. The only thing I like about him is the feedback he gives. it's detailed so stick to what he is saying. But, if you don't want stress, don't take this class. Even if all your quizzes and HW are perfect, if you don't get a good grade on your essays, you get C.
John Baumgartner is NOT an easy teacher. Be prepared to work for your grade. That being said, he's also an amazing teacher, and will give you far more information about the subject than you thought existed. He's great to work with, and gives very helpful and constructive feedback. You're gonna work your tail off in his class, but you'll learn
One of the best teacher I have ever had! The class is extremely enjoyable with a great balance between group-work, class discussions and lectures. It was an amazing experience, I wish it would've lasted all year! John is wise yet funny and though English is my 2nd language, I didn't fall behind because of his accommodations and help. Thanks John :)
John cares for his students sucess. He is a tough teacher, tough in grading and in the assigments, but the feedback he gives is very helpful. If you attend class he gives you lots of useful information so that you do well. He allows class to be fun, but still productive. I have learned so much and have made life long friends in this class. :)
Its the last 2 weeks of the quarter and he is waiting to grade 700 points worth of assignments even from wk1. This class makes me feel terrible there is no creative essays or your own opinion it is so heavily political and analytical. He will make you think you have a 4.0 all quarter then when the grades go in at very last minute and you're crushed
John is very nice and has an obvious passion for English. This quarter is not his best, as we have one week left and two essays to do. He is a very hard grader, and gives a lot of work. You definitely need to be on top of your game for this class. Although, if you email and ask for help or an extension he will most likely give it. Good luck.
John is amazing! He really does care about his students and also what he teaches. as long as you watch the in class films, do the online hw (which is easy) and read the textbook (which is very user friendly) you'll do just fine. theres 3 essays in the quarter and a group project but they were all fairly easy and he does allow for makeups. hes great
Great class, learn tons of stuff that are actually useful and helpful in real life. Would recommend it if you are willing to work and learn.
John is a good guy he gives really good feedback. In all honesty I have never stressed out about a class this bad, like I did in this one. Theres one week left and we are assigned 2 essays to do. He is a really harsh grader and for-sure gives a lot of work. Overall, he is a nice guy but your grade will get crushed no matter how hard you try.
I did John's class quarter. It is the best, funnest, and most challenging class I have ever had. He cares for his student success and gives good advice. I have so many good memories and friends from this class. If you work hard you'll do fine, but also remember to have fun. Everybody does better if there's alittle fun. I already miss them and John
I wanted to improve my writing so I enrolled in both ENGL&101 and 102 with John. For this goal, I needed someone to give great feedback on my papers. John defiantly gave the best feedback. A hard class but John builds the class up to the hard papers with discussions and smaller writing submissions. He responds to messages promptly too.
Intro to Film: Professor John was caring and is flexible with due dates. Gives good feedback but does take time grading papers, he understands this and is willing for you to rewrite papers based on feedback. There is one group project at the end of the quarter that has you filming a short story, overall take this class if you enjoy watching films!
Very understanding professor and gives back good feedback on your assignments. I enjoyed having him as a professor, I just wish he gave less homework lol. The assignments aren't very hard, he just assigns a lot of work each week.
not the best teacher, did not put in a ton of effort but did not do a good job explaining vocob, which was really important to the course. Idk just would not recommend unless needed. I took intro to film btw
Love this teacher. He is so nice and helpful. It is fine for late work. However, you have to submit it back.
Introduction to Film - best course ever! Prof. B is a golden instructor who gives constructive feedback, reasonable extensions, and consistent updates. He provides a variety of cinematic masterpieces throughout the quarter, just make sure you read the textbook & communicate any questions you have! (use quizlet for the weekly chapter quizzes!)
Took his class for English 102. I was very nervous about taking English 102, and was really hesitant to take it the first year of running start. I joined the class late and as a result, had to get many assignments done. Prof was very understanding though, and allowed me to have extensions as I updated him with my progress. He gives great feedback!
John gives excellent feedback and his reading topic are interesting. John is flexible on due dates as long as you communicate with him.
Very kind and understanding when it comes to accepting late work, will not take off points for late work at all.
He is one of if not the worst teachers I have ever had. He taught critical race, and that is not what you should be teaching in an English's class. He plays favorites, and singles out the people he doesn't personally like and tanks their grade. I wish I never knew him. I emphasize, do NOT take this class!
The material he taught was not appropriate for an English class, if he wanted to teach a course on race he should've become a Political Science professor. It also takes him ages to grade things. Avoid this professor like the plague.
Great teacher that gives great feedback (when he gives it) and promotes actually good discussion. Overall would reccomend
Was picky on grading
Very good teacher with good explanations.
The professor gives great feedback and promotes engaging discussions. While the workload is heavy, unstuck AI proved helpful for efficient study prep. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class.
He is a great teacher.
He used a new grading method, which was based on completion. It sounded great but it sucks! If you miss any part of the instructions he makes you complete it. His assignments are a lot of work and time consuming. Minimum 1-3 per assignment. Would not take again or recommend.
He wouldn't give partial credit for assignments you either did them or you didn't. But if you got the credit for an assignment you would have to make sure that it met the criteria for every little thing. He would sometimes go later than the class was scheduled which would make me late to my high school class because I am a running start student.
He was an unreasonable grader, and would never give partial points for assignments and was very nit picky about work. he class lectures are always dragged out. Although, he spends a long time lecturing he doesn't explain it very well. Overall, he is a nice person, but not a good teacher.
Professor Baumgartner was one of the worst professors i've had. He never graded your work even if you email him repeatedly. He tried this new labor based grading system that is honestly horrible. The course load is way to much and his lectures are very boring.
He is one of the best professor I ever had.
