Took Greek101 at the UofA during fall and was a really nice class. Prof B. is a really helpful, clear and still funny teacher but I got to say that there is a lot of time consuming hw. Not hard tho but u'll need something like 2hrs of work a day to write out the exercises and prepare for the 50 quizzes of the semester !
Prof. Bauschatz is good teacher, does a good job of holding your attention in a large lecture class. A lot of reading and analyzing, I'd compare it to an English class in that sense. Only take this course if you have the patience for a long reading assignment each day, and enjoy greek mythology. He also provides Lecture guides which are very useful
Don't kid yourself about this class. It's a lot of work. Who wants to read 50-100 pages of Greek history every night? Who wants a teacher that will only award you with an a if you recieve a 91 or higher? Exams, absolutely rediculous. eight short answers, and a large 120 point essay. Don't waste your time or sacrafice your GPA.
Lots of reading!!!
An AMAZING teacher and hilarious! However, there is a lot of reading and a lot of it can be 50+ pgs a night which can be hell. But the tests are easy as long as you generally read and follow the powerpoints he puts on D2L. But, you should go to class and take notes because there are pop quizzes for attendance. Great class though!
He is a great teacher! Really funny and keeps your attention
Great class. Prof B makes the material fun and interesting. The reading is a little much, but as long as you just skim the material you will do fine on the tests.
His lectures are entertaining and funny. Yes. BUT. He assigns SO MUCH material for reading and will NOT DISCUSS ANY OF IT!! The tests have about a lot of questions on the readings and its annoying when you have 300+ pages PLUS all the lecture notes. He is not a bad teacher, he just gives WAY too much material for a 3 cred gen ed.
intersting class but A TON of reading.
He makes the lectures fun & keeps everyone's attention. There is a lot of reading and a couple short essays, but it was my favorite class this semester because of his teaching. He really understands classics and gets very into the lectures (he even gave a lecture pretending he was Julius Caesar). Great professor! I definitely recommend him!
His lectures would be boring if he didnt crack so many jokes in between. He's so hilarious it makes you want to go to lectures! I actually looked forward to classes just to see what kind of jokes he would make. lots of readings though. but just sparknote it and you'll be good. gives lecture guides which help a lot. overall easy class!
Great professor! Extremely hillarious but he assigns way too much reading. He has pop quizzes and goes through the lecture material more thoroughly than what you see in the power points so you should go to class and take notes. A lot to know for the test with the lecture notes and all of the readings.
When I first signed up for this class, I was really excited. However, it proved to be a tedious and useless class if you're not a classics major. Yes, he's funny and all but he gives way too much reading and the way his TA's graded the papers and tests is ridiculous and unfair. I DO NOT recommend him unless you dont value your GPA!
If you want an easy A, this isnt the class for you. I got an A but I had to keep up with the info and go to class. Pop quizzes are 20% of your grade and papers are 30% of your grade. You need to do well on both in order to get a good grade-that isnt easy at all if u don't read, sparknotes wont give u quotes for papers. He's great tho!
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. The time this GenEd sucks up isn't worth it. Lectures are fun and entertaining, but cover a lot of material and his tests are extremely difficult. There's a TON of reading that MUST be kept up with. There are 5 random pop quizes, so you could just plain get unlucky. A 70 IS A D+ AN 80 IS A C+ AND A 90 IS A B+. NOT WORTH IT!!!
This class was bad. His grading is extemely unfair, and never could justify his grading scale. I don't reccommend this class if you dont like reading or are looking for a gen ed.
lots of reading! the grading of the papers was very subjective to which TA you had. 8 short answers on test are all based on reading and the essays were always some rediculous prompts that you had to BS through. funny and entertaining guy. WAY too much work for a gen ed. has the potential to drop your GPA
He's an amazingly funny teacher who really knows the language well. Although he keeps an extremely tedious class fun, I wouldn't recommend it unless you are extremely dedicated to learning Classic Greek. The language itself is incredibly difficult, even with the best teacher. Despite the 2hr/night workload and endless quizzes, I enjoyed his class.
Greatest class ever. Highly entertaining, and very funny
Funny and makes it really interesting. If the class is good he will help you guys out A LOT!!
class- super easy. Yes, it is alot of reading, but can guess on the quizzes- use common sense, read the first few pages. I got an A. The reason most dont is due to out of 100 pts.papers are easy, and you can BS.would write in 30 mins the night before. Test are super easy. Look over notes. Don't have to attend, have friends and get notes.Funny guy
going into this class i thought it was going to be so hard, but as the class went on i was gettin A's on all the tests and papers. the hardest part was the quizzes so stay on top of them, but do them with a friend and you will have no problem getting an A!
Prof B is awesome. I hate this topic but he makes the class cool. You dont have to read, but going everyday is important. Its the only real way to know the stuff needed for the 3 exams (1 Final) and 2 Papers. Its easy if you go most of the time.
Fun class, keeps lectures entertaining.Lots of material.Attendance not mandatory but necessary.Exams can be tricky. You may understand general concepts ok but the exams covers the little details.Online quizzes sucked.Papers were ok,not too hard.Exams will be hard if you dont study your *** off.But I would take his class again.
Professor Bauschatz is one of the best profs at the university. The homework is intense, but Bauschatz grades fairly and is super helpful; clearly wants his students to succeed. Ancient Greek is tough, but Bauschatz makes the material so much fun. I would continue with Greek 201/2 if I wasn't graduating (as long as he was teaching it).
He's really cool and presents the material in a fun and clear way.
One of the best classes I've ever had. The professor will have you laughing everyday and make the class fun while you learn. Hes extremely high energy, and on the last day of class everyone was clapping and cheering for him.Only 2 exams, rest 10question online quizes,2 short papers.thats the class.
Amazing professor! Incredibly funny and just an all around awesome class. You have to do a bit of work but its totally worth it.
Great teacher who loves what he teaches, making his lectures entertaining and easy to listen too. I always laughed so hard in his class! Attendance is suggested for notes, which are crucial for success on the exams. 2 exams, a final, 2 papers, and online weekly quizzes. Papers were quite easy, study for exams, and skim for quizes. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Dr. Bauschatz is an awesome lecturer. He gets a ton of information across while being funny and ridiculous and keeping it interesting. That said, you have to pay close attention in this class and take good notes - it's not a class you can breeze through with no effort. If you put in the effort (pay attention and study for tests) it's an easy class.
He is a delightful professor & insanely knowledgeable about the world of Classics. I kept my notebook from this class for future CLAS courses & it's been indispensable. One of the best people in the department, for sure.
Fantastic, easy class. He is a great teacher who is very charismatic and really cares about the subject matter. Your grade is based on attendance, reading quizzes (the reading can be a bit lengthy but it's usually interesting) and three short papers based on the reading, which basically write themselves. Definitely recommend this class!
Ancient Greek is an extremely confusing language. However, Professor Bauschatz is the best for the job. He makes puns and learning fun. Overall, one of my favorite professors.
Dr. Bauschatz is easily one of the best professors working at the University of Arizona. He was helpful, kind, and extremely understanding. He made learning Ancient Greek accessible and fun. I would highly recommend him for anyone wishing to take ancient Greek or anything in Classics.
I missed a test due to illness and professor Baushchatz was kind and understanding. I was allowed a re-test whenever I felt better. Great guy.
Prof B. is a funny, clear, and organized lecturer which made this class not only reasonably easy, but very interesting as well. You'll have to study HARD for the tests, but there are 4 of them, 3 short papers, and reading quizzes every week + extra credit so you have plenty of opportunities to do well. It's a decent amount of work but a good class
Ur gonna wanna hold on to ur hat for this one. I just finished my last damn assignment for this class and I dont think I've ever been a happier person. And im not being dramatic here people. And suure you could stick your head up inside a butchers ass, but wouldn't you rather take my word for it? Just sayin, its too late for me but save yourselves.
To all prospective takers of the ONLINE Classics 160D3: Crime and Punishment in the Ancient World, This class was the worst experience of my college career. I have never been so miserable in my life. The readings were excruciatingly boring and took hours to comprehend. I got an A in the course after spending 8 hours to complete every assignment.
Dr Bauschatz is easily my favorite professor at the U of A. He does his best to make every lecture funny and a little bit interesting, and gives tons of extra credit opportunities. There are weekly reading quizzes (can just look up answers on the internet), 3 short papers, and 4 exams(one is the non-comp final). Great class, great professor, easy A
Bauschatz is actually hilarious. He is so entertaining in his lectures and he doesn't have a monotone voice. He gives plenty of extra credit, just do it.. you'll probably get credit even if it isn't one of his favorites. Don't take the quizzes for granted; try to remember to do all of them! I don't normally like history but this class is great!
I got an A on all 3 tests and an A on 23 papers. I thought I was guaranteed an A in the class BUT I got a B because I got an 85 on the final which is 15 of your entire grade. Good class content but study extra for the final(which was less like the study guide than the other tests). He won't bump your grade if you're one percent away.
Professor Bauschatz gives good feedback which is especially helpful in an online class. One piece of advice, if there is only one due date for all assignments, as there was for my online class, DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. Do the work in a timely manner and it will be an easy and rewarding class! Learned a respectable amount.
Class was pretty good, other raters have summed it up well. Just wanted to add that for Spring he made us buy his $100 book that had maybe 3 readings in the syllabus, and if we didnt cite it we would fail one of the essays. Just a heads up - you can't get out of buying the book, he's destroyed the loopholes.
Very good professor. He makes the lectures interesting and fun for students. He knows that the lectures can get boring so he throws in some jokes. Interesting course material for those who enjoy history. Its tough, but in a good way. Completing work gives a sense of accomplishment. Loved this class.
Dr. Bauschatz is a funny, and nice person. However, it requires hard work to get an A. But he gives plenty of extra credits opportunities.
This dude is actually really funny. Im a hard kid to impress but this guy does it. Im not a good studier or reader and you definitely need both of those for this class. I dont do either and ill probably end up wih a C or D honestly. The material is pretty interesting though. Ton of reading. Weekly reading quizzes. 4 tests. TON of fun extra credit
Professor Bauschatz is a cool guy and makes the lectures more entertaining even though the material is boring. You don't have to read just google questions each week for online quiz but he makes you cite his book in one of the papers so you have to buy it,tests are straight from study guide just copy slides and he does take attendance/patricipation
Bauschatz is an amazing professor. He gives hilarious, interesting lectures and there isn't much homework. The readings weren't totally essential- it's mostly common sense on quizzes. You have to study hard for tests, but there aren't many. TAKE THIS CLASS! You'll learn a lot.
He is really good teacher and person, funny, really funny, makes boring lec interesting. Even if i am getting an A , still, it is the hardest class that i've ever took.
You need to go to class everyday because of "clicker questions" (he has you use an app). Tests are easy with matching, definitions and a short essay section. He offers fun extra credit opportunists during the year. It is mainly memorization of terms. You do that and you'll do fine. I only bought the book he wrote for the essay assignment citations.
Attendance is taken and its 5% of your grade. He also ask you questions everyday in class and it matters if you get it right or not. He gives 3 test, 3 short papers, 14 quizzes (but 4 get dropped), and the final. He offers A LOT of extra credit, make sure to do ALL of them because most of them are added to your test scores which tremendously.
John's a hilarious guy that tries his best to make a dull subject bearable. There's 4 tests, including the final, and 3 essays. The essays are easy and as long as you study the tests should be a problem either. Also offers a ton of extra credit so if you don't do well on one of the tests don't worry about it.
I absolutely loved Professor Bauschatz. He is funny, personable and extremely clear in what he wants students to know. Though the tests are pretty lengthy, if you listen during lectures you'll be fine. He doesn't require you to remember dates and offers MANY opportunities for extra credit. I would highly recommend taking any class with Bauschatz.
Professor Bauschatz has been my favorite professors. He makes his lectures entertaining and offers a lot of creative extra credit. You will ace the class as long as you take notes and do a bit of studying before the exams. The papers are short and straight forward. He's great about answering emails. Overall, I would take a course with him again.
The class is very different based on the teacher and subject (changes every semester). Proff. B basically designed so you read a primary source and then discuss it every class and on Fridays you take a short quiz and post in a discussion instead of physically going to class. Three short essays. Proff. B is funny and the class an easy A
I think Prof B changed his curriculum this year, because it is nothing like the past ratings. There are weekly online quizzes over three sections of readings, about 20-30 pages for EACH section. The exams aren't impossible, but definitely require studying and probably doing the study guide. Three short papers, they take a while.
I took his Beginning roots of western culture class my freshman year. It may be a dry subject to some people however he tries to be funny. There were 4 exams including the final, readings every night, quizzes every 3 readings and 3 papers. He does post the lectures online. Exams included: multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, and essay.
I loved this class! Professor Bauschatz is hilarious, an I enjoyed going to class every day. He's always there to help.
He takes attendance every day in his lectures. Tests were really hard. He has weekly timed quizzes that are really hard unless you do the readings which are about three 25 page readings a week :/
Prof Bauschatz is extremely funny guy and actually makes you want to come to class. He does take attendance through an online system, but if you're there it should not be an issue. The papers are super easy, if you do the study guide and review it a couple times you should get at least an A or B in the class. Extra credit opportunities are often
Prof B is a cool guy and cares what he teaches about. But he is under the impression that this class is a much higher level class than a gen ed. This class is unrealistically hard. Three essays, three tests, 15 quizzes, and he asks you questions in class that if you don't get them right you don't get any points. Doesn't sound that bad, but IT IS.
This teacher is really cool, but for me at least it was really hard. There are 3 writing assignments which aren't that hard, but i thought they were graded hard. The tests are really really hard and will need to study for them a lot!!!
Professor B is by far the funniest professors i've had. Because of his jokes during lectures, otherwise boring topics weren't too bad. There are three papers in this class that have a lot of reading, and you have to actually study for his tests. I would have done better in this class if I did the readings because theres a quiz on them every week.
there are three papers in this class, weekly quizzes on readings, and 4 major tests. Professor B is really funny and makes class fun. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities so take them!
Show up to class (it's 5% of your grade), participate, take notes, study a week before the test, and you should be fine. Bauschatz' lectures are engaging and he has numerous extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Nice introductory level course.
John wasn't the worst teacher I've ever had but his class is the hardest I've taken so far and I'm in accounting. Lectures are extremely dry, tests are near impossible and his TAs are the harshest graders EVER. There are 3 papers which are stupid but not impossible and timed weekly quizzes which are ACTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE. I promise you will hate it
This class was veryyyyy hard. The teacher is funny so it wasn't that bad in actually class but the tests require a good amount of studying to do well on them. The weekly quizzes are hard since you have to actually read if you want to do well since the answers are not online lol but he offers so many extra credit opportunities literally do them all
Be prepared to take a quiz (timed) every week on 90 page readings, write at least 3 essays, and take 4 exams. The book is necessary for the essays because you have to cite them in the essays, it's $100. The exams are quite content heavy. Basically get ready to spend many many hours for this class. Your grade will suffer if you don't put in hours.
One of the best/most difficult classes. Prof B is entertaining in class and gives plenty of opportunity for extra credit (most are forms of embarrassment, but will get you up an entire letter grade!). As far as excuse emails and talking to him in person, he can be kind of an ass. Buy the book, and use your common sense of the online quizzes. STUDY!
I took this class because I needed it for my gen ed, little did I know that I would do so poorly. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Bauschatz is an awesome teacher and he's hilarious in class but the material is boring (to be expected) and there are quizzes on mandatory reading. The tests are SUPER hard and need a lot of studying done in order to pass them.
Great teacher, so funny and lectures are never boring. Must be exactly on time to class to get attendance credit, which matters a lot. Participation is a lot of your grade. Tests are very difficult and papers are graded hard. Must do all of the reading and study a ton.
Definitely study for the test, its a lot. Don't miss lectures because they are jam packed with information. Get ready for reading, seriously.
He was a great professor, but it was a lot of busy work. There are 4 tests and 3 essays in all. He gives out study guides for every test and the test are almost completely based off the study guide. The lectures are entertaining, but the content is boring. He uses online attendance so you need to go to class. Not an easy Gen Ed. But its do-able.
Professor Bauschatz is hilarious, does a fantastic job making the lectures funny, and is very nice and understanding. He is especially nice to talk to during office hours. Only problem is the awful annoying exams and homework. Lots of quizzes and difficult exams.
DO NOT TAKE Hist 205! Would be better if offered in person but I took this 7 week course & it is a lot harder than the course description makes it sound. Especially because this is only a 200-level course & not a 300-level course. I also thought the course description was misleading & the prompts for the essays are ridiculous. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Bauschatz is fun, but does not sacrifice learning at the same time. If you go to office hours and submit your essays as rough drafts first, you should be fine. There is a discussion every week, three essays, and weekly quizzes. The readings Are lengthy, and Im retaking this course this summer because I had a bad semester outside of class
He gives the best feedback on assignments that I have ever seen in my entire academic history. Quick to respond to emails as well. But this class has a ridiculous amount of reading, and some of it is pretty dull. Would not recommend taking this class if you are not somewhat interested in the subject matter (Roman history).
He obviously is very caring and interested in the subject that he teaches. He gives great lectures and you will really learn a lot from his class. A TON of reading though- don't take this class if you can't handle a lot of reading.
Fun lectures, hilarious dude. Makes every class interesting
Solid choice for a class. Prof Bauschatz is a funny guy and makes the class interesting. Test are long and given in a short period of time so study. Extremely reading heavy!!
WAYYYY harder than I anticipated, alot of work, reading, and, and difficult grading. Perhaps could be good in person but this was a 7 week online class and easily took up more time than any of my other classes. Way too comprehensive for a "fun" elective credit.
A really fun professor that holds up the class to a higher level. For history lovers, the jokes make the subject even more interesting and fun, and for those who find it dull, Professor Bauschatz instills life into even the most boring parts of history.
Really enjoyed his class. Does his best to make the content fun during the lecture. Is super engaging and gives lots of extra credit opportunities. The reading can be time-consuming but is do-able. Very understanding, also.
He was great! I took this class the first semester of my freshmen year and he was such a good introduction to the UofA. His classes only consist of lectures which one may decide is a very bad thing but he makes them so funny, you can't help but stay attentive. I want to take another one of his classes so badly! I highly recommend!
Mr. Bauschatz was an amazing teacher who was clearly passionate about Ancient Greece and Rome, which made the course extremely interesting. His sense of humor always brightened everyone's day.
Took his online 7-week CLAS204. It was my first 7-week course class and it will be my last. I expected to have a higher work load than normal, but I didn't expect to be reading 100+ pages of ancient Greek texts each week, a discussion post with 250+ words, a quiz, and a worksheet with 12 questions each requiring a min of 75 words per question.
I took a this professor's 7 week online CLAS HIS 204 class and the work load given is just enormous for every assignment besides the discussions. Get ready for at least 100-150 pages of reading a week and extremely tough grading on those assignments. Would not recommend taking this class to anyone.
Took his seven week online class and It was one of the most difficult classes I've taken in my 4 year college career, especially for a 200 level class. Expect 150 plus pages of reading ancient texts a week for a 12 question worksheet. Also a discussion and a quiz with another 40 pages of reading a week. This class had people dropping like flies.
Honestly, this is by far the worst class I have ever taken. There is a ton of homework including discussions, worksheets, and quizzes. This professor and his TA are the worst graders ever and are very hypocritical. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!
I have taken all 7-week courses since my readmittance to the UofA in Fall 2019, after a 10-year gap. This by far one of the hardest classes I have taken, especially for a 200 level. I received help from teachers whose subject area they currently teach are Latin and Classics, that I work with and it was still a struggle to receive decent grades.
Definately not my favorite, kind of a jerk honestly. Made us buy the textbook HE WROTE. Not a bad teacher, just not a great dude.
I rated him before and honestly I was a little rough, he's a funny dude and does his best to make things interesting during class but some of the software and websites used in the class are not user friendly at all. People are right when they say there's a good bit of reading though.
HORRIBLE. I had to withdraw not even a month in because there was no way I was going to pass. Youre grade is all quizzes, exams, the mid term and final. The weekly readings took hours upon hours to read. I emailed him since I was a struggling and he was a major jerk. My midterm for another class was was easier than the first exam he gave us.
For a GE, this class is a bit of work and if you don't like to learn it's probably not for you. I did enjoy learning the material but the weekly readings are long and a bit boring if they're from the online textbooks. However, if you stick to the study guides it's not hard to get a solid A on the exams because everything on there is on the tests.
Here's my second time posting this review because Professor Bauschatz reports them if they're negative. Do not take this professor unless you're looking to line his pockets. The required textbook is his own which is a compilation of free literature. The class overall isn't terrible aside from the four ridiculous exams with a short time to take.
The stuff youre learning is not hard however theres 4 papers, quiz every week (2-3 readings per quiz) and 3 tests 1 hour each. For the test you need to write 5 75 word minimum prompt plus answer a question that requires at least 500 words and 10 matching, 10 identification and 10 multiple choice. All for 1 hour. This class is not worth it
This class is alright, probably would help if you cared about the subject matter. There are three short papers, and the rest of the grades are participation and a quiz every week. There is also a required textbook that costs over $100, written by the professor. This class was alright
While the lectures were engaging, the feedback on major essays was always overly critical. This is a 200-level course and he expects 400-level effort. His feedback on minor assignments was good but major essays leave you feeling inadequate. Would just comment "ugh" instead of suggesting how you can improve. I will never take a course of his again.
Never take a class with this professor. My seven week weekly classwork includes: -8 hours of a reading worksheet, three citations each question with 75 word minimum with out citations, usually requires you to read an entire mythology book -Quiz -Discussion post -Essay every other week, on top of work
Dr. Bauschatz is a cut and dry type of grader for tests. Dr. Bauschatz shows passion for the study of Classics. Keep up with the coursework and you should be fine with him. Dr. Bauschatz gives excellent feedback on exams and is also very helpful in explaining complicated linguistic phenomenon. He is a great teacher!
This was a terrible class with a terrible professor. He announced in his own words on D2L "I rage quit" and "sucks to be you". All because we weren't paying attention enough, enough to him is raising your hand and asking 3 questions. The class average for 3 short essays was 56, 69, and 63. This was just a horrible experience to go through.
Hard grader, attendance is mandatory. If enough of the class misses the readings, he gets very upset and quizzes ya'll. But he softens up over the semester and is a reasonable guy if you communicate and be respectful too. I would say that if you participate actively he is well disposed to you and is easier to get along with.
Bauschatz is a really amazing professor, but you have to CARE. Yes, he's a tough essay grader but if you submit a rough draft and edit it with his suggestions you'll easily get an A. If you show an ounce of care he will help you out. He has a very sarcastic and dry sense of humor, which can come off wrong, but he's actually hilarious if you listen
I am almost finished with my degree and wanted to take this class for fun due to my enjoyment in this subject. Thus far, the workload has been insane. I have never failed a college class and don't think I will pass this one, and the way this teacher grades has been utterly discouraging. He docked points for me for "not sounding enthused enough"
i really loved Bauschatz' class, he's really passionate and makes the lectures really entertaining. however the course is really reading-heavy, there's a weekly quiz and three essays over the semester - as long as you submit a draft for the essay he will give the feedback you need to bring it up to an A - if you engage Bauschatz is great!
This man is truly one of the nicest and most caring, genuine people I've ever learned from. His class is far from an easy one, but he really makes you think and pushes you to the next level. His feedback on papers (In HIST 303, Crime and Punishment in Ancient World) was tough but very fair. He is really an outstanding professor.
Expectations outlined in the syllabus are not a fair assessment of how he actually grades. Feedback is unhelpful, discouraging, unprofessional and rude. Same goes for communication; after emailing repeatedly asking for help, I only ever received rude and unprofessional responses which were made to make me feel inadequate and as though I am a child.
My experience his class is very disappointing. He frequently makes discouraging comments, creating a negative vibe during his online class. He often made rude comments and remarks to students. The grading is harsh, and the feedbacks were also demeaning. Which some made me feel like he was calling me stupid. Overall he very unprofessional.
Some of the comments here are relatable. He shows a lot of personality in lectures and makes them engaging. He is also harsh and highly unprofessional in general. Makes offensive comments as "feedback" both in class and through papers, but mostly in paper. Honestly, take a better professor, not worth the bullying.
Professor Bauschatz is a hilarious and funny professor. I enjoy his enthusiasm in class and can see he is clearly passionate about what he teaches. That being said he is a harsh grader whose feedback is not only insulting but has little to no substance. Overall he's very unhelpful on this aspect of teaching and needs to improve on it.
When I first saw this reviews for this professor before taking this class I thought it was just over exaggeration. I was disappointed to find out that I was wrong. Professor Bauschatz is very charismatic and engaging, yet also unprofessional and rude. He occasionally insults the intelligence of students and sometimes their physical appearance.
I somewhat agree with other comments in that his sense of humor is not for everyone, but people are exaggerating. He is just really blunt in calling out weak and unresearched points, yet fair. Yes, he could be a little more professional but he gives you clear feedback on drafts to improve before the deadline and outlines the structure he wants.
Really engaging and funny lecturer. Lots of memes in the slides. Just do your work in advance, and follow his feedback from the drafts. He can be harsher on paper, than he is in person but only if you slack off, which is fair.
I was in HIST 204, as first year student, overall Bauschatz is an amazing professor, I loved attending his class and I found him to be engaging but also quite informational but I could understand why some people could dislike his quite whimsical way of teaching. If you like having an informational and entertaining class then I 100% recommend.
Prof. Bauschatz (bow-shots) is one of the best professors at UA. He's enthusiastic, passionate, and his office hours are the one of the most supportive places on campus. His papers are difficult for sure, he gives heavy feedback. But don't let that intimidate you! He's such a cool person to learn from and be around. I really enjoyed his class.
Professor Bauschatz gave some of the most entertaining and engaging lectures I've ever seen. Students were encouraged to ask questions and engage with the material. His feedback on papers was also extremely thorough and helpful. Just make sure to participate, pay attention, and do the quizzes, and you'll do well.
He is a very harsh grader, in terms that he is discouraging when he replies to your papers. Most of the time if said things like “ugh” or just rude comments, then was upset when students don't participate in class. He is quite frankly just kind of hurtful, making comments about students appearances, intelligence levels, and just bullying students.
The professor is engaging, but the course is reading-heavy. Utilize resources like Unstuck AI and stay on top of the weekly quizzes and essays to succeed.
Participation is VERY heavily graded and you have to talk 2x a class to get credit for participation. The papers are short in length but you must read the readings assigned to complete them. His grading can be a bit harsh but you have the chance to submit a draft and rewrite one paper. Overall he's really funny and entertaining lectures
Participation is about 30% of your grade. You can get A's on everything, but if you don't raise your hand, you won't do well. Everyone is trying to grab points, so it can be difficult to chime in on discussions. He is a super funny professor and is known to give pretty blunt essay feedback, but you get to revise your paper drafts before submitting.
The Goat and gave us snacks on the last day of class. Super funny and engaging.
Took this professor before and he was just as great this semester too. Key to having a good experience in his class is putting in an effort and caring about the material. Only has 2 essays and he gives great feedback if students want to submit 1 of them for a revision grade. He is also hilarious and gives great insight to the lecture topics.
NOT A 200 LEVEL CLASS!! For its level, reading is insane and work criteria is absolutly nuts (example: 500 word paper, but must be strickly 3 paragraphs only, and required to have 15 citations (5 per paragraph)- but he wants more! His expectation is multiple wanted per scentence!). Feedback is sometimes useless. Cool teacher, but brutal classroom.
While John Bauschatz was a funny guy, he graded harshly and the readings were very boring and participation is a whole 30% of your grade which is not nessercarily a bad thing for me but if you don't like to participate, you will not be able to do well in the class. Overall, I wouldn't reccommend this course.
Bauschatz had an entertaining course and I personally enjoyed his lectures a lot. Attendance and participation is a huge part of your grade though. If you don't participate you probably will fail the class, so keep that in mind before taking him.
