Probably the best teacher I've ever had in a physical science. He is a very good teacher & gets the job done in 48 minutes. He also jokes around a lot so class isn't boring. Gives great examples and demos.
good guy
Beacom is da bomb.
This guy is hilarious and he's a good prof too! you can still get an A without going to lecture--but he is pretty entertaining and does cool demos. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS-- you'll walk away understanding everything.
i never took physics before and i was really nervous for the class but he is a great prof. - funny, helpful, understandable, and he gets his lectures done quick. exams aren't bad at all just study his notes and old quizzes
Hands down, a great teacher who turns an otherwise boring subject, into a great time.
Beacom is NOT a boring, old dinosaur. Hes fun and energetic, and he always drops SOMETHING every lecture (hes so clumsy). Quizzes and final are tough, homeworks were somewhat challenging. However theres a curve in the class. He keeps you interested with demos and he doesnt confuse you like the other professors. Take BEACOM for physics 111!
Really chill professor, very helpful, very nice guy. definitely recommend to all people who have to take physics 111.
Great Teacher! If you have to take Physics 111, try to take it with Beacom. Class is challenging but is also curved.
Prof. Beacom was an excellent teacher. Attendence wasn't mandatory for lecture but I would highly recommend going. He would give you "hints" for the quizzes and midterms, and those questions were always featured on the test. He also does awesome demo's in class and is a funny, entertaining, helpful guy.
Very interesting and makes physics more tolerable
Professor Beacom has a great sense of teaching and humor, and therefore, lectures are educational and fun. The material is challenging, but manageable if you put time and effort into the class. The final was much easier than I anticipated. His quiz and exam questions are reasonable. I would highly recommend him.
Dr. Beacom is a wonderful lecturer. He's very responsive to student concerns and questions. He also does terrific demos (freely admits to liking to blow things up). He's very tough, but if you have a chance, take his class.
Prof Beacom was excellent! He was very helpful and made class fun.
He is an amazing professor. Physics is not my idea of an interesting class, however he made lecture informative and fun at the same time. He TEACHES the material very well. His quizzes are little rough at times, but if u study them in the end along with his lecture notes you will do well. He cares that you get a good grade if you are working hard.
Dr. Beacom is a great prof. He makes physics fun and easier to learn. He has a GREAT sense of humor. He knows how to make students laugh and keep their attention in class. He really cares about helping us do well. The midterm was rough and the quizzes were sometimes tricky, but study hard and you will do well.
reealllly nice guy. GREAT PHYSICS PROFESSOR! if you get the chance to take beacom do it. he's hilarious, clumsy, blows stuff up, and rides around on his skate board. easy A
Professor Beacom is a great professor. He teaches every aspect of the class clearly and if someone doesn't understand it, he continues until everyone does. He's hilarious and very down to earth. His quizzes are difficult at times, and so are the midterms, but if you study for this class it isn't that difficult. Big curve. Take him and study easy A.
Mr. Beacom really was the secret to my success in Physics 112. He was always willing to help me with homework or with whatever questions I had. He was a great lecturer who focused more on concepts then numerical problems. His tests and quizzes were challenging but not impossible.
Best Professor in the history of The Ohio State University.
AMAZING PROFESSOR/PERSON. Dr. Beacom will everything he can to help students understand the material in physics 112. He has a great, positive attitude which makes lectures more interesting and fun. Regardless, the material is diffiult but I assure you that he is the professor to take.
great professor, tests are kinda hard but study and it pays off
Professor Beacom was awesome...the demos he did helped me understand a lot of the concepts we talked about.
He is very heplful especially when he is your recitation TA
He is real cool.
Professor Beacom is awesome! He is willing to help anybody that asks and is willing to do a little work..not to obsenely difficult and if he makes quizzes and stuff to hard he recognizes it and will filter the scores...he's amazing and funny! He makes it an enjoyable class to have in the morning.
Prof. Beacom is great! Take his section, hands down. His notes are clear, he is super helpful, he curves the tests/quizzes. He responds to emails really quickly... wonderful teacher and funny too. A bit obsessed with Spongebob. :)
Dr. Beacom is amazing, he made class fun to go to even though it was at 8:30 in the morning. Take him but be warned that the midterm and final are REALLY hard. Try hard on the quizzes and get all the points you can in lab and you'll do great. Beacom is SUPER helpful but sometimes his responses are vague(he tries to guide you.)
Professor Beacom is phenomenal. He genuinely cares about his students and will take the time to make them successful. He is a great teacher. If you have a chance to take anything with him...you should. He is very knowledgable, approachable, and able to make complex ideas easily understandable. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had!
Prof Beacom is AMAZING! Very clear notes, very helpful, responds to e-mails quickly. Go to lecture. He makes it fun
amazing prof! highly recommend him to anyone. really puts in the effort to connect w/ his students. & has a great sense of humor, lightens things up!!
Very outgoing and helpful! You'll actually learn something from his class!
Very good lecturer who cares about his students. Able to teach in a sort of way that anyone in the lecture can understand regardless of their physics background.
Very good at explaining ideas clearly. He is also willing to help struggling students.
CHILE PEPPER! Beacom has the best personality ever! He is hilarious and extremely helpful! If you can take his class, definitely recommend it! Love him!! Hope he is teaching 112 in the Fall! He is brilliant! Labs are lame and really long and boring but you have to go. Lecture is optional but definitely go!!
Beacom is extremely helpful and has office hours all the time! If you have any questions whatsoever he is very approachable! He is super attractive, mainly his personality but he is a cutie! He has a crazy beard! Love this guy!!
This course is very difficult mixed with a poor professor it is that much harder. He does not teach you how to apply the material for tests and his exams/quizzes are near impossible. if you have not had physics before invest in a tutor and get used to reading the book early. With generous curves you will get by, but don't expect to learn anything.
Physics 112 with Beacom is one journey of a class. I mean he's a good guy, he was willing to help and had office hours, but the material was just brutal difficult. I found most of it to be completely irrelevant to my major of computer science.
Prof Beacom is an extremely good professor. He pays attention to his students and teaches the subject as well as it can be taught. His exams are not hard, people just need to learn how to open a book. Highly recommended.
Physics 112 is hard, that's a given. Beacom teaches the material however with great clarity and simplicity so students can grasp key concepts and ideas for further use in life. The tests and quizes are challenging, however Beacom is aware and will curve them. Tests are supposed to be hard, they test your knowledge. Kickass teacher!
Dr. Beacom is one of the best teachers I have had at OSU. Make sure you attend lecture and recitation and take notes because that is what the exams cover, I never once opened the text. Make use of his office hours. The only problem was that exams tended to be long AND tricky, but that was compensated for by a curve. I would highly recommend him. :)
Very helpful professor, very interested in making sure everyone did the best they could do. Even started a carmen discussion forum to talk about the exam and what it would entail. Also was very quick to answer emails. As far as physics 112, its a very easy class, i didnt go to lecture and i usually skipped the second recitation and i still got an a
He was definitely interested in helping kids learn--he had review sessions, gave lots of hints in lecture. started a carmen discussion group, and answered emails quickly. I thought his test questions were often poorly worded and misleading, as well as far too difficult for our level of knowledge. But, overall, fun class, cool guy.
Beacom is definitely one of the best professors at OSU, coming from a graduate who has had many. The concepts in the class weren't 1+1=2, but I wouldn't consider any of them hard. And if you understand the CONCEPTS, and visualize/draw what his questions ask, you'll get most of them right. The rest he'll likely curve and you'll pull off an A.
Physics 112 is not an easy class due to the conceptual nature of the material. The exams and quizzes are challenging and will require that you to study to do well. Prof. Beacom is one of those few instructors that devotes his time outside his normal hours as well as provides many resources to set you up for success. Highly recommend Prof Beacom.
Physics 112 is definitely not an easy class, but Prof Beacom is one of the few professors that I've had that actually cares how his students do. He tries very hard to make sure his students understand the material. Quizzes/exams draw from concepts, which people struggled with, but if you skim the book, they're really not too bad.
The concepts in this class are difficult to grasp if you don't study and put the effort into the class, but let's face it people you're in college now it's what you're supposed to do! Beacom is an amazing professor. You can tell he's passionate about physics, which makes learning from him enjoyable. He is also super helpful.
prof beacom is a very reasonable guy and i recommend taking his class. where is that charming accent from? it's a mystery.
I think many of people have a problem with physics 112 after coming from physics 111. Trouble comes from the conceptual nature of the material in 112. The hw questions assigned in 112 pertained to quiz and exam questions but tended to be of a different form. Regardless of how difficult Beacom's quizes and exams were, it was clear he wanted to help.
Best science professor I have had! If you go to class and participate, which he forces many to do ;) and try on the homework, you will be able to do well in this class! He is an amazing professor and uses a ton of examples and experiments to help visualize the material
He is a very good prof for this class. Highly recommend him because not only does he makes the class interesting and easy to learn. Give hints on quizzes + final. Don't take anyone but him or you'll regret it. Funny guy too!
Awesome professor for Astron162. I hope, for future student's sake, he teaches it again. He is a master of analogies, and absolutely knows how to explain difficult concepts. Easy to listen to, and a funny guy.
Great professor! Extremely knowledgeable and makes difficult concepts easier to grasp. Makes space even more interesting; highly recommend him.
John is an excellent teacher, and the subject matter is totally fascinating. Our comprehension of the material was always his top priority, and he was very careful to explain these massive concepts in clear, relatable ways. The course really wasn't difficult, but I learned a massive amount of information and enjoyed the process.
This was my last science GEC, but if I could I would go back and take as many of his classes as I could. He was a very easy to relate to professor and always explained himself extremely clearly. I sincerely miss going to this class every day.
Awesome professor. He is dedicated to making sure the students understand the concepts, and he is genuinely interested in the subject. He provides great analogies, and sparks an interest in astronomy in most people. I learned a lot, and loved the class. If you go to class, take notes and ask questions, you will get a lot out of the class.
Beacom is a great teacher! Very good at explaining things. Don't buy the book. If you study it's not hard to get an A. He tells you what's going to be on tests and gives out extra credit.
He is an awesome professor! Amazingly clear and helpful. You don't need the book at all, so don't buy it. The notes are all online for you to review, but it's still good to go to lecture because he gives extra credit for that and participating online discussions. He also gives you outlines on what is going to be on the quizzes and final.
He is a really great professor and awesome for learning more about space while fulfilling a GE. He gave out 5 homeworks and 4 quizzes and dropped your lowest grade. The final exam was cumulative but manageable. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Class is optional but helps. All the lecture notes are online. Definitely take him if you can!
Too much hand holding and too arrogant.
Four quizzes, five homework assignments, and a final. He drops your lowest quiz and lowest homework. He's really interesting to listen to and makes good analogies. He's very interesting and willing to help. Go to his final review sessions! Would take another class from him again. He's an awesome guy too, but you have to work for an A.
It was clear to me that Professor Beacom wanted his students to do well in his class and offered as much help as possible! You had to work for an A but it wasnt an overwhelming class. I enjoyed his class very much.
Professor Beacom is super helpful! I struggled in the beginning but after going to him for help my work really paid off. He's a great lecturer and is always willing to take questions. He uses relatable analogies and encourages participation. He really gives you a chance to do well if you want to.
He is a great physics professor. The quizzes and exams can be tough, but if you go to lecture he will basically tell you what is on them. I hate physics with a passion, and he made this class 100% tolerable. If you have to take 1201 make sure it is with him
He is a great professor. He offers a ton of office hours, and is very approachable. I frequently go in to get help on the homework, and he is great about giving detailed answers to make sure you get it. He is also a super dynamic lecturer, so you won't be falling asleep in lecture and might actually even learn
Dr. Beacom was great! He really cared about his students doing well. If you take Physics 1201, take it with him. He is the man. If you go to lecture he tells you pretty clearly what will be on each quiz and midterm, and they are extremely fair. Plus he makes the class interesting. Take him!
Become is truly one of the best professors I have ever encountered during my 4 years here. Outstanding lecturer, explains concepts and ideas very clearly, and wants students to succeed. Do not take with any other professor. I would take every class through him if possible.
Dr. Beacom is the man! His exams were all very fair, and he genuinely wants all of his students to do well. He strives for a 77% average on everything, and honestly comes pretty close (with the exception of the final which had a lower average, but was still fair). TAKE HIM if you can, you wont regret it. Best professor I've had in my 4 years at OSU
One of the top professors at Ohio State for sure. Really cares about students and does everything he can to get you to do well. He is active in office hours, responds to email quickly, and even posts on carmen discussion boards in case you can't make class. He rewards students for coming to lecture with hints. Highly recommend.
Dr. Beacom was an amazing physics professor. Everyone said that physics 1201 sucks, but he made this class not sucky. You should definitely go to lecture, as he tells you exactly what he expects from you for exams/quizzes. He also actively posts on carmen discussion boards to help answer questions, clarify doubts, and post hints for test/quizzes.
Class was awesome - I hated physics and he really made lectures fun and interesting. Plus, he often has "passwords" for exams in lecture; it's definitely a class worth going to. While you do need to study for exams, he gives a good overview over what's important and the quizzes are good ideas on the questions. Overall a great prof!
Definitely take Beacom if you can. He is super clear about what he expects you to know and doesn't worry about the random details the book may include. He even gives hints about exactly what will be on quizzes and exams, so go to lecture and read the Carmen discussions. I really disliked physics and he made the class so much better! 100% recommend.
Dr. Beacom is the best introductory science professor at OSU, not just physics. He is clear with lectures and expectations, interesting and fun to listen to, and 100% devoted to students. Dr. Beacom goes out of his way to be accessible and give all students the best understanding of physics. If you have to take this course, this is who to take.
Beacom writes out his notes on the board, no power points for this guy. He's goofy and gives weird/funny examples in class to help you remember concepts. Quizzes and exams were heavy concept related but he gives you a good idea of what he expects you to know. Go to class, study, seek office hours when needed and you'll be golden.
I didn't have physics in high school so taking both 1200 and 1201 at Ohio State was difficult. Professor Beacom made 1201 so much more interesting and feasible! It still took a good bit of work but he clearly states what he expects his students to know for each exam. He is the most reasonable teacher you could find in physics!
Every time I ask Dr Beacom a question he responds dismissively. There's a feeling that he is always annoyed or too short on time to respect your effort to learn during his office hours. He does seem especially unhelpful toward certain "types" of students. If something changes, I'll remove this post, but for now, I am fairly disappointed.
Beacom has been one of the best professors I have had at OSU. He is clear with what is tested, lectures are taught extremely well and are fun to attend. He goes out of his way to set up office hours to fit everyones schedule. He also posts hints and tips for all quizzes and exams which helps immensely. I would take Beacom for all physics classes
Dr. Beacom's quizzes and exams are almost all conceptual questions so its important to go to lecture. He posts literal fricken GEM quiz hints online. He encourages people to ask questions online and come up with their own potential exam problems.
From someone who has never enjoyed physics and took this for GE credit, Beacom was sent from above. He made 8 AMs worth it. He only focuses on the fundamental stuff and thinks complicated math problems are unnecessary, and cares more that you understand the core concepts. Expectations are made very clear, and his quizzes are very reasonable.
Beacom is a real gem. Never had a prof that actually made me want to show up to an 8am. A is very manageable to get. A super cool guy
Best general science prof I've ever had. He offers multiple weekly office hours that were super helpful and provides carmen quiz hints. Don't need to read the book, just take good notes in lecture (blackboard style). He makes abstract concepts easy to understand, and quizzes/exams are extremely fair. I actually enjoyed Physics 2 w/him as a prof!
Horrible Instructor, he would word exam and quiz questions in a unclear manner that makes confuses you even more. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dr. Beacom is an engaging lecturer and focuses on the main, important concepts. Quiz and exam questions are conceptual rather than plug and chug, so studying hw questions doesnt help much. Dr. Beacom walks through physics step by step and makes the subject less daunting than it sounds!
Definitely one of my favorite professors I've had!
His lectures were entertaining and easy to stay focused during. The quizzes and exams are very concept heavy rather than math, which I found made it much more tolerable than 1200. The class started out confusing but got better as it went on.
Great Professor - Really helpful and provides "hints" or topics to study before each quiz and exam. He does demonstrations at least once a week in lecture, which are helpful and engaging. Exams are tough and averages are low but a curve is applied to each exam. Definitely recommend.
Really funny, and makes the class very enjoyable. Does a lot of cool and visual experiments during lecture to make it really memorable to students. 10/10 would take his class again
Even though I was really nervous to take Physics 1201, Beacom made the class really enjoyable and not at all impossible like many people made it out to be!
Dr. Beacom was an awesome Physics teacher! He made an effort to try to get to know his students, held lots of office hours, and his lectures were helpful. Do the homework, study his quizzes and the recitation problems, and read the textbook. You'll do very well by doing those things.
Dr. Beacom provides ample opportunity to absorb concepts of physics for a variety of different learning styles. I recommend attending all of the lectures, as he provides MANY real world examples and tricks to remember tough lectures. He's a very cool guy outside of class as well, def go to his review sessions. He doesn't want you to overthink.
Pick Beacom if you want the easy tests, easy A, but also if you dont want to learn much. Professor Beacom is horrible with explaining hard concepts. He loves touching over new material quickly and going straight to his demos instead which, half the time it is him throwing up something and failing to catch it. Hes a chill guy but just cant teach
His lecture is fine, but he makes exams way too hard!!! A lot of things are not covered in the lecture. He always runs out of time in lecture so he told us to read the book by ourselves.
Great professor
Great lectures! Great demonstrations in class! Hard exams!
Dr. Beacom is by far the best professor I have had at Ohio State. He is brilliantly intelligent, but never uses this to seem better than students. He explains concepts in a way that is understandable and is very approachable in office hours. Lectures are very engaging. He believed in me even when I did not believe in myself!
Funny but exams are a nightmare. He is also very critical on quiz grades. Be prepared for more multiple choice points that one thought imaginable. He had the lowest exam averages, seriously, avoid him but maybe go to his lectures for he cool demos.
Dr Beacom is a blessing from GOD- anyone who said different is probably just not good at physics (which is fine). Tests are hard, with lower averages, but always curved to compensate. Honestly hes the nicest, sweetest, most dad-joke guy ever. Like if I could adopt him as my dad, I prob would. A true angel. Take his class
Overall this class was very interesting.
Dr. Beacom is a 10/10 awesome professor and overall great guy. He genuinely cares and wants every student in his course to succeed and do well. He incorporates fun and interesting demos in his class which help lighten the mood at times. His quizzes and exams are pretty tough, and he makes you work for your grade. Take Dr. Beacom if possible. 10/10.
Dr. Beacom truly cares about his students and does everything he can to help them! Physics 1201 is not an easy course by any means but if you go to all the lectures and especially his office hours, you can achieve the grade you want. Dr. Beacom is not only funny and interesting, but a great professor who is patient and respectful of his students.
Professor Beacom knows how to make lectures enjoyable. He would provide quiz hints for every weeks quiz that were tremendously helpful. He also cared about individuals not as students but just as human beings. He always wanted everyone to succeed in his class and in life.
Gives very good outlines on what to focus on each quiz and midterm. Explains things well in office hours.
Professor Beacom was an amazing professor. I cannot recommend that you take his class enough. His quizzes are a bit tricky but definitely not too bad and he is always willing to answer questions and help students out. Such a kind, caring and intelligent guy.
Amazing professor! Highlights what you need to know, and he gives you challenging quizzes which really help you prepare for the exams. He cares very much about individual success. He offers so many ways to help his students, from discussions posts online to in-person office hours after every class. Hopefully he is your prof for 1201.
Dr. Beacom is an amazing professor and he truly cares about all of his students' success in the class and outside of class. Physics is a difficult subject regardless of the professor so the class was definitely very challenging, but Dr. Beacom's lectures were organized well and he offered many office hours which were helpful.
Dr. Beacom is an amazing professor and he truly cares so much about his students' success in and outside of the classroom. Physics is a hard subject regardless of the professor, so I thought the class was very challenging, but the lectures were very well organized and he offered numerous office hours and provided many resources. I 100% recommend!!
Professor Beacom is the best professor I've had at OSU. He offers many office hours at varying times to accommodate everyone and although I am not a big fan of physics, he made it doable. His quizzes are a little hard, but as long as you go over them afterwards and understand them the tests will be familiar enough to do well.
Professor Beacom was my favorite teacher at OSU so far. He is very accessible outside of class, and office hours really helped me get an A in the class. While Physics 1201 is a difficult class, he does a great job of providing resources to help his students as well as being a great professor to go to for advice. 10/10 would recommend.
In a perfect world, every prof would be like Dr. Beacom. He cared about us as human beings instead of just students, and put his all into our success in every meaning of the word. I can never speak highly enough of this man. Take his courses if you can, you will be better for it!
Angel professor! I learned a lot from his computational physics lab course:)
Dr. Beacom was one of the most insightful and accessible professors I ever worked with at OSU. Truly a pleasure to take this course. Assignment grading is very generous and re-submission windows are as well. I learned a lot and would take this course again!
