Beeler is awesome, my favorite professor on this campus.
The man loves his BeeGees. =)
One of my favorite HY profs. Fun class but still tough. True open door policy.

great lecturer
Dr. Beeler is awesome..no attendance policy, not a big stickler on due dates either. He will help you out with anything.
Tough class, but he makes it interesting.
Beeler is perhaps the best lecturer at the University. However, he has some strange infatuation with Mr. T.
No lie, the best prof. I've seen. Unrivaled subject knowledge, great lecturer, and obvious concern for students. A tad eccentric- thrift store wardrobe and detests MacArthur- but it is all in fun. Serious work load but worth it. Take at least one class.
The best Prof on campus as far as I am concerned. Really takes the time with students and is willing to work with them. Will definatly keep you entertained.
He is a great lecturer with a cool sense of humor. His tests are easy if you read your notes and just listen. He is very lenient with due dates and attendance.
Engaging, insightful, and one of the most enjoyable professors I've ever had.
I have had Dr. Beeler for 3 classes, over the past 2 years, and he is without a doubt one of the best professors at the University of ALabama. Excellent clarity, he provides outlines so notes are no prob. Again, the best prof. I have ever had!
I love this man. He's briliiant, hilarious and really nice. All history majors should be required to take him.
Beeler is GREAT! He makes class fun, and is willing to help you out whenever needed

Very interesting professor, but very hard to take notes from and his tests are hard as hell!
Good teahcer. Doesn't take attendance.

Someone buy this man a new wardrobe. Wears the same outfit everyday. Black jeans, black boots, black button down shirt w/ sleeves rolled up
I loved Dr. Beeler. He's brilliant, enthusiastic and he inspired me to want to learn, and teach, history. He presents history like it's a story, and each class would give us the next chapter in the story. Dr. Beeler is one of the top teachers I have ever had, and I remember him fondly.
Best lecturer ever.
Great teacher! I took several of his classes and liked them all.
I love this guy, he is hilarious and really gets into it. Friendly, easy to understand, pretty clear about what you need to know for the tests. They aren't exactly easy, but they're doable. Doesn't take attendance, lenient about due dates.
Great professor.
Dresses in the same black outfit everyday, Make sure your TA is not Rakestraw or else in in for it.
I pity the fool who doesn't like John Beeler.
Dr. Beeler is the best professor ever. He really brings every student into his lecture!!
Awesome class! Awesome professor! Very helpful and flexible. I would definitely recommend him!
Very good professor. Interacts well and explains all the text cleanly and clearly. Definately would take any class he teaches.
TAKE THIS MAN'S CLASS!!! Probably the best lecturer and definitely the COOLEST PROF on campus! Really easy class - the multiple choice options on exams make you laugh out loud. No mandatory attendance, and the guy is really nice and helpful outside of class. MAKES YOU WANT TO GO TO CLASS! TA's can suck, but that's not his fault. Take him!
passionate teach, but the assignments/discussion sections suck.
One of the greatest teachers I ever had. All my elective credits were earned in his classes.
Best teacher at Alabama. If you miss any notes he will be happy to email you his lectures.
Probably one of the best in his field. Beeler is one of those profs that make you wanna be a history major. I suggest his Britain and the World Wars. AWESOME.
If I ever teach, I want to do it like Dr. Beeler. He's passionate about his subject (British history), he's a clear and engaging speaker, funny, laid back about deadlines, and it's just fun to be in his class. He's not easy: you'll read and write plenty, but he teaches with such clarity and energy you can't help but get into it.
This is what a teacher should be. Beeler is passionate about the subjects he teaches, making the student just as interested. His class is difficult and requires a great deal of work, but he is there the whole way, providing any information you need. If you're a student interested in learning, then this is the teacher for you. Highly recommended.
Beeler is simply amazing, thats all you can really say. The man asks you to work as any teacher shoud, but he makes the class so entertaining. You can tell he loves what he does, and he shows that passion in his lectures.
Beeler is the most passionate teacher you will ever have. His lectures are amazing and he really loves his job. I am a business major who usually hates history, but Beeler does a great job. Take his class
Dr. Beeler is a hottie. The only reason I'm not acing his class is because his smashing good looks distract me every lecture. On a more serious note, Dr. B. is a very entertaining professor and knows his stuff. I highly suggest him!!
I think he's a pretty good teacher. Sometimes, I feel like class is really rushed, but overall, I like him. recommend Dr. Jennings over Dr. Beeler. But Dr. Beeler is, by no means, a bad professor.
Overall I enjoyed this class it is a pretty interesting subject. This class does however require a lot of work, so it is by no means an easy class. But, if you try hard you can get a good grade. Make sure you get a good TA, cause they pretty much determine your grade.
I really enjoyed this class. He is a very good and entertaining teacher, and he knows a lot about the subject. His tests aren't easy, but he is a really down to earth and fun teacher.
Great speaker. Beeler has a wealth of knowledge and conveys it very well with a fairly extensive vocabulary. He's really interesting to listen to- especially if you enjoy history. The ease typically depends on the GA, but you definitely have to review a good while before each test. He gives possible essay prompts, so research each one before hand.
Great teacher. Kept everything so interesting. His tests weren't bad at all. If you study, you will make an A. He gives you all the possible essay questions which is really helpful. I hate history and he made me interested in history. Highly recommend him!
I have never enjoyed history until now. Beeler is by far my favorite/most interesting teacher I have ever had. I strongly recommend taking his class!
Very entertaining professor. Lectures are very interesting and hes a funny guy. Keeps things moving and interesting. Would recommend his class if you need a History.
Best History professor at UA. I've taken three HY's and passed one...This one.
History is all about the professor! He made me want to take more history than I even needed for my major. Very nice guy. Very willing to help. Loves what he does and makes it interesting for students to learn. Also- he is very intelligent and is able to give hour and 15 minute lectures from his memory- impressive!
Very enjoyable man. I've had him for 102 as well-almost too easy. If you get the chance to have him as a professor, take him. He has a wonderful sense of humor, and a passion for what he teaches. His classes are very interesting, and he is very willing to help out. Just don't mention the Herman's Hermits...
BEST TEACHER AT UA! I have always hated history until Beeler. He is absolutely hilarious and entertaining. TAKE HIM!
Great Teacher! Loves teaching and it shows in his lectures. He loves his students and he makes class so interesting! He is a little scatter brained but I really enjoyed his lectures. He is very real and funny.
Best Professor at UA hands down. Lectures are loud, entertaining, and very interesting. He's making me want to change my major! Love him!
Professor Beeler is the best history professor everrrr. He is so into his lectures! He runs around and jumps and acts out everything he's saying and i just love him to death! He's definitely not boring at all. He wakes you up!
FANTASTIC! Took him for HY 400 which was a British rock music and culture class. Did a fantastic job of lecturing holding interest early in the morning. He also did a great job of utilizing films and the music of the era to aid in learning. He is prob the MOST fair professor I've had at the university and his tests come directly from the notes.
Dr. Beeler is the most dynamic lecturer I have encountered at UA. He can be difficult to follow at times, but you will not be bored in his class. Tests were pretty tough. Most of your grade is determined by the TA's. They grade the essay portion of the tests and determine your participation grade, which is 40% of your final average. Take Beeler!
He's interesting and makes class fun to attend, but his tests are fairly difficult
Beeler really knows the material he teaches which makes the class interesting to attend. His tests are pretty hard and include essays but all around it was a good class to take.
Very Very Very Good at giving lectures. Teaching style is very dynamic and all from memory. My class was early in the morning and for once I was able to stay awake. The tests are easy and he lets you skip 3 questions but the essay portion is graded by your TA so your grade is semi dependant on them. He makes history absolutely fascinating!Take HIM!
Dr. Beeler himself was a very good professor and he taught completely by memory and experience, which impressed me. The only reason I didn't like this class, however, is because his tests were a little difficult and his TA's are in control of discussion. My TA gave me a B for that, so I received a B for the class even though I got As on my tests.
Dr Beeler is the finest professor at the University of Alabama. I made an effort to take courses from him when I experienced his HY from 1668 on. The man loves what he does and his enthusiasm rubs off. I took 5 courses from him during my History major 12 years ago and wish I could go back and listen again. His WWI course is A+ in my book!
Best Professor at UA!
Great professor and does not use scantrons like all the other classes. He is easily the best professor I have ever had and knows his sh!t
AMAZING TEACHER! He is super enthusiastic about history and it definitely makes students pay attention. He knows absolutely everything by heart. I did not care much about history before taking this class but his way of teaching will definitely make you listen. I highly recommend him!
Amazing Professor!! Definately one of my favorite classes at this University!!! I would highly reccomend this course!!
Dr. Beeler is very knowledgable about what he teaches. Class is mandatory because it's the only way to get the notes. If you attend class, you will pass the tests. Dr. Beeler is funny and makes lectures interesting. TAs make this class harder though. Overall an easy class.
Dr. Beeler is a caring professor and you can tell he loves what he teaches. However, his lecture is spoken BY MEMORY. NO POWERPOINTS. I found this to be difficult. Also, the multiple choice section of his tests are pretty easy if you study but even if you make a 100% on that part, if you bomb the essay you make an F. I hated that. TA's suck.
Dr. Beeler is a great professor! The tests are 28 multiple choice questions then an essay question. The only thing is that the TA I had was terrible. His lectures are all from memory so there wasn't really a PowerPoint which did make it a little difficult if you zoned out for 2 seconds in class. Overall, I really liked him as a professor!
Too much information to cover for an exam. He spoke too fast and was not clear on the material that needed to be focused on for exams. Also, there are 3 page essays for every exam, which makes it even more difficult. If there weren't exam essays, it would half as difficult.
Dr. Beeler is very passionate but does not provide notes and speaks extremely fast. He gets off on tangents and is not clear about what will be focused on for exams. What really matters is what TA you get. If you get a bad TA then you are screwed for the whole class.
He's a really cool guy and his lectures are interesting. However, he rambles off a million MPH and you can't really get much out of the lectures. TOO TOO TOO MUCH information to cover for each exam especially because of the 3 page essays you have to write for each exam. Workload of two 100 classes, spare yourself the stress.
He's a great teacher. Super animated and hilarious. His exams consist of multiple choice and an essay. Just study and you'll get a good grade.
Great professor!! He is super knowledgeable and always willing to elaborate. Do recommend a recorder, because he is a fast-talker. Once you get a sense of how to take notes from him, it's an easy pass!
Too much information in too little time. Trying to take notes in class is awful unless you have a laptop... you'll be vigorously typing the entire time. He doesn't grade anything so your grade depends on your TA.
This was my favorite class at the University, hands down. Dr. Beeler is an amazing lecturer, quite funny, and is extremely helpful. He does, however, expect a lot out of his students, but it's nothing particularly unmanageable. He does talk fast, so I recommend recording his lectures just in case, and doing the reading helps a TON for the tests.
This class was fascinating on all levels. His lectures are fast paced and packed with information, but so interesting. He tends to get off topic, but when he does you always learn something cool you never knew, even if it doesn't pertain to U.S. Naval History. The essays have no hard deadline, and he's very helpful if you see him outside of class.
I really loved him! Gave great feedback on papers and the test are really straight forward and are from the notes. One of the best professors I've had here so far.
Dr. Beeler is an amazing history teacher. His teaching style is fast-paced and energetic, but it makes the curriculum so much more interesting. He is also a very nice person outside the classroom. I would definitely take this course again!
Beeler is awesome! Though he tends to fall behind sometimes, it is not a big deal. He is very passionate about history and it spreads. I'd recommend his classes!
Dr. Beeler does a fantastic job! You can tell he's very passionate about what he's teaching. You definitely have to pay attention in class to get good notes. Don't necessarily need textbook but it does help to reference. Tests are laid out really well, very realistic expectations. I highly recommend his class
I heard history at UA was impossible, but I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Beeler's class. I never read the text book but showed up to every single lecture and made B's on his two test. It wasn't a hard class you just have to show up to lecture and pay attention/ take notes. The discussion class helps you understand what you didn't in lecture.
If you go to class you will be fine! Gets off topic sometimes, but during lectures he emphasizes key terms that you will be tested on! Just listen and write down those key terms and you will easily pass.
Beeler is obviously very passionate about history and he keeps the lectures lively and interesting. He doesn't take attendance, but it's pretty important to go and take good notes if you want to pass. There are only 3 test, but the cover a ton of information and include a 2-3 page essay. There are also reading quizes given by TAs so do the readings
Dr. Beeler is one of my favorite teachers at UA. He's super kind and wants to help in any way. Plus, he's always up for discussing anything in his office and I consider him as a friend. He tends to get off subject but his lectures are fascinating, as you learn no matter what he discusses. He's not a tough grader and has no deadlines for papers.
Dr. Beeler is one of the best HY professors at the college! He's super nice and wants to help students in anyway. Great lecturer, but pay attention because he gives you a lot of information. Not a tough grader and is lax on deadlines, but don't take too much advantage of it because otherwise you'll forget and be left with a lot of work at the end.
Took Beeler for Gen Ed and HY Major Elective. Amazing. Can get off topic and fall behind, but lectures are always fascinating. Only a few grades for the term (esp for major specific classes) but there are no deadlines for the papers. Attendance is not mandatory, but showing up will help you with the exams. After you go once, you won't want to miss!
Overall hes a good person and is very passionate about his lectures theyre just very hard to follow he strays off topic a lot but he does make himself available for help outside of lectures. This class is challenging if you arent use to a lecture setting.
Dr. Beeler is a typical view of a professor. Yeah, he's not the easiest to follow along with, but he makes Western Civ lectures entertaining. If you pay attention and take good notes, you should do well in the class.
Beeler is a great professor who knows what he is talking about but is sometimes hard to follow in lectures. Class is not necessarily easy, but is not insanely hard. If you take good notes in class, that will benefit you on the tests. The harder part is the discussion section with TA's (?) where pop quizzes happen often. Would recommend Beeler!
He is a good teacher, but his lectures don't contain notes, they contain images, so you really need to write down what he is saying. Very accessible outside of class. The recitations are graded by a TA so it's a hit or miss if you get a good or bad TA cause they grade all your tests and quizzes.
Beeler is a great professor. He is so passionate in every lecture and it makes you want to pay attention and learn more. Tests are not difficult, but he gives you the essay questions a week in advance, so I suggest to start studying them asap (they are worth Half your test grade). I wish he taught every history class!
Your grade is basically dependent on your TA, Beeler was great and truly passionate about his lectures, but if your TA is Liz Stovall, either try to switch while you can, or drop the class until next semester.... she was horrible. I have always enjoyed history until now, changing my minor, thanks liz
Dr. Beeler was a very good professor. You mostly depended on your TAs during lab and for actual grades (thankful I got a good one).. His lectures are long and sometimes he got off topic but overall I learned a lot! He made tough history material easier to understand which was amazing. If you can take Beeler!
Professor Beeler is very passionate about what he teaches, but his tests are unreasonably difficult for an entry level gen ed class. He talks a mile a minute and goes off on several tangents so it is really hard to keep up with what he says and theres no other way to access the notes. I actually used to like history but this class ruined it for me
He is a really nice guy and passionate about what he teaches. I unfortunately had to drop the class because he talked way to fast and I couldnt keep up! Very lecture heavy and was hard to type off the words he was saying because it was way to fast and hard to study if you have bad notes!
I took Dr. Beeler for British Pop Culture History. He is so sweet and extremely knowledgeable on the subject. He is so willing to help his students succeed, and will help you with anything, if you ask. The content was really interesting as well.
Absolutely take him. I've never seen a man get more riled up about German Unification than Beeler. I had him for 8:00 A.M. so if you need to wake up, listen to him yell about the French Revolution! The tests are fairly easy although your grade will largely depend on your TA, so be nice to them! Kevin was the best! 10/10 would recommend!
GO TO CLASS. His tests are always straight from the lecture. I went to lecture and took notes and did no reading outside of class and got 100s on the tests it's so easy to get an A+ in his class. He also makes the lecture interesting so I actual enjoyed the class. Highly recommend him if you are willing to go to class.
Hilarious man, not on purpose, but because he will get distracted in class and start ranting. Absolutely take his class if you don't like history. Absolutely take his class if you love history. His class is easy enough and he's never in a bad mood.
Beeler knows his stuff.
Tests and section are the only grades you get, so attending lecture is a must. I never touched my book and got an A. He's a very passionate and funny professor, I love listening to him. A. I looked forward to his lectures every day. It also doesn't hurt that he's a total zaddy.
Truly an exceptional professor - equal parts compassionate instructor and frighteningly brilliant academic. Wonderful.
By far the nicest professor Ive ever had. You can tell he loves history. Attendance is not mandatory but will help you SO MUCH if you go. His lectures have lots of information so take notes. No HW. Only graded on 2 tests and the final. He gives a study guide and essay questions. Go to his office if you have questions- HE WANTS TO HELP YOU PASS!
I absolutely love Professor John Beeper. He makes lectures fun and understandable. He is opened to questions and very accessable. I would gladly take this course for the next four years if I had the chance.
I absolutely love Professor John Beeler. I enjoy his class and believe that he is a truly inspirational man.
I'm a senior History major and my only regret is that I just got to take Beeler once. Dude is the best lecturer on campus and a super fun guy. His class has the most relaxed structure in the entire History department and maybe the whole university. No deadlines at all, you can even turn your stuff in years after you finish the class. Take him!
By far my favorite professor. He makes his lectures so interesting, he's funny and passionate. He responds to emails quickly and will send you the class notes if you were sick. Highly recommend taking him. His tests are based directly on the lectures and he gives you the potential essay topics beforehand. He really wants you to do well and enjoy!
Dr. Beeler is awesome. His lectures are super interesting and he's hilarious. Attendance is not mandatory and he is incredibly lax about due dates. You can literally turn a paper in 6 years late and he will accept it without penalty (6 years is actually his record). I thought his grading on written assignments was tough, but he's great.
There is basically no outside reading that you have to do except for the two papers you must submit. My biggest piece of advice is to come to class and take good notes. You will not have homework and all you have to do is study your notes for the test and read a little in the book for quotes when writing the papers which has NO deadline.
His exams give me the most anxiety I have ever had from a 100 level class. This was my last GenEd and it was such a stressful class. I failed the first exam because I gave a fully formed and correct answer to the question and mentioned things I learned from class but because I didn't name drop the specific works I was referencing I failed.
Beeler is a good teacher and good guy. His class is definitely more interesting than any other starting level history class. The essay format tests are difficult to prepare for but you won't get much better for a starting history class than this class.
Professor Beeler knows what he's talking about and is very passionate. I really think I would have enjoyed his class more and his teaching style if it wasn't all online. All of the exams for this class are essays and they count for most of your grade. But the other percent of your grade is just participation. Make sure to take lots of notes.
Much like HY101 each of the exams where essay based. Beeler gave possible essay prompts before-hand, I never felt that I was truly prepared for an exam. Every exam is graded by an assigned TA. Therefore, each TA grades differently. Whereas with one you might receive an A, another you might receive a C for the same work. Grades: Exams, attendance.
Beeler is a nice guy and tries to keep his lectures entertaining. If you are not interested in history, this class is a little harder to follow as he puts an outline up on Blackboard with terms to know, and then just lectures. You need to be good at taking notes to succeed in this class! Don't take this thinking you can get away with not studying.
he needs to understand this is a hy 100 class because this class was so hard. no slides just terms so you have to listen to take notes. goes really fast and the tests are very hard. you can tell he is very passionate and i think he just gets excited to talk about history and goes too far into it sometimes. lecture is not mandatory but go to pass
Mr. Beeler was a very nice and intriguing professor, but his class was difficult. The tests are the majority of your grade and they're pretty hard. There's just a ton of information so you have to take good notes, which is tricky l when you can't write down everything he says fast enough. He does, however, provide notes if needed.
Dr. Beeler is the epitome of a history professor. If you can't take quick notes or don't enjoy history, do not take him. If you can adapt to a rambling lecture style and love history, Dr. Beeler is the professor for you. I truly enjoyed his class and lectures, and the mandatory discussion sections make it easy to ask for clarification.
Dr. Beeler is kind funny and accessible. I did not pass my first test and I emailed him and he helped me greatly I got an A on the second test no problem!! Answers emails quick and overall a really great person. Would definitely take his course again!
John is a great lecturer. He'll always make you snicker when he slips jokes and asides into his lectures. He does not have powerpoints so you have to take notes from what he says. Exams are multiple choice and essay.
By far my favorite prof this year. Dr. Beeler is knowledgeable, passionate, and engaging. He's very accessible outside of class and posts most of his lecture audios in case you're absent. He is definitely one of the best lecturers I've ever seen and he really cares about his students. Tests are difficult but as long as you prepare you'll be golden.
Dr. Beeler is the best professor in the department. He's extremely knowledgeable and is very good at articulating his thoughts. His intro class had three tests and the remainder of the grade was showing up and participating in recitation. He gave the test essay questions beforehand. Take his class if you can, he's hilarious and super interesting.
do not take this class, your entire grade is only made up of 2 tests and then your final test and section grade. not an easy A whatsoever and the tests are graded so hard and no extra credit or curve. he only lectures by talking there are no slides. if you dont go to class you will have no info, nothing is posted.
Dr. Beeler is a good professor. He wasn't either amazing nor awful. His class is very easy, however. At least for His102. He is a very old guy, as of 2023, he claimed he was becoming forgetful. He is passionate about what he does. His only downfall is that he is totally anti powerpoint. So, sometimes he searches for images on Wikipedia, it's funny
Dr. Beeler's classes are fun, engaging, and high-energy with interesting subject matter. In HY 305, we had only 4 grades (2 tests and 2 papers) - the tests were exhaustive, but very doable with adequate studying. Dr. Beeler has no late work policy, so paper deadlines are whenever. He cares about his students' wellbeing - take him, he's amazing!
Loved having him, great professor who knows what he was talking about and enthusiastic during lectures. You need to be listening during lectures, as he doesn't post what he is saying, but attendance is not mandatory but extremely helpful. Grade was based off of two papers, which are due at the end of the semester, and three tests. Take him!
Over all he is good proofer. I enjoyed the class for the most part there was a lot of stuff that you discuses during class so be prepared to take a lot of notes. Dr. Beeler is very knowable about what he talks about. Just be prepared for very few grades.
Professor Beeler is an engaging lecturer with a great sense of humor. The class is challenging, but he's very accessible and helpful. Using Unstuck study alongside the textbook and attending discussions really helped me succeed.
I really enjoyed Prof. Beeler's class. He moves quickly and only provides an outline in class (not posted but you can email him for it). Attendance is not mandatory but you miss a lot if you don't show up. The lab was fun and had great discussions, also helped clear up questions. If you don't enjoy history or type fast, it may be more difficult.
Dr. Beeler is an amazing professor. He gets into his lectures and he is also pretty funny. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does not post slides, so the whole class is based on his lecturing. IF YOU CANNOT LEARN FROM JUST A LECTURE, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! I love his class, but I cannot just be lectured to.
He is genuinely the most intentional professor I have ever encountered at UA. He reads rough drafts of all your papers to give feedback before turning it in, is extremely flexible in terms of paper due dates and arranging office hours, and genuinely wants to see you succeed. His lectures entertaining and filled with humor. I love this man dearly.
His lectures are so fun he is super lively and makes the content interesting! Make a relationship with the TA for section and do the readings, As long as you show up to section you weill do well.
Dr. Beeler is a nice guy who brings insightful information on the topics discussed in his lectures. Attendance is not mandatory for lectures but high
