He is really great! He is understanding and easy to talk to. His tests are nev
I do not enjoy Fender Bender's teaching style. He was quite bad.
bender is a cool guy, easy to talk to , makes you think in lecture and in lab
Bender is too smart to teach lower level classes. Don't take Qi for lab
very difficult tests... grading scale looks good at first, then hurts.
Confusing! I learned more from the book than I ever did in lecture! Tough exams.
Unclear lectures and tough exams. Willing to help but is unclear in explanations
You will learn nothing except he is a scary man! He can't teach
Very BAD teacher!!! Don't take him unless you HAVE to!!!! BAD
tests not on classwork. You're expected to "figure it out." Can't control class
Nice clothes! Test have nothing to do with lecture or book
Tests are like Senior year at Brown type work. Come on
Bender and his tests were made in hell, but he's fun and nice. he tries.
He's an absolute sweetheart, but a very hard professor!! Too smart for us!
His tests were sooo hard, studying for hours doesn't help at all !!!!!!
Prof. Bender was a good teacher, exams were just too hard!!!!!!
He is way to smart to teach an intro to chem class, and hedoesnotknowhowtoteach.
He has no business teaching anyone, at all, ever.
He's so wierd he's intriguing Exams suck Don't waste time studying, doesn't help
Tests are impossible, not over lectured material, studying is a waste of time
He is by far the worst prof. that I have ever had the misfortune of having.
Very nice guy, but impossible. Do not take unless you have no other choice.
Nice guy, but does not help with questions... tests made in the neitherworld.
He is a cool guy and is always willing to help, but exams=reallyreally hard :(
not good prof, tests are way too hard
He is a nice guy, but like everyone said, the TESTS ARE HARD!!!!
Testsarevery hard, butifyouunderstandthebasic concept youwillbeok
Although he may be alien intelligent, he is by far the worst instructor I've had
Bender is a total dreamboat. roar!!!
good teacher very helpful..tests will kick your ass!beware
I think I got dumber once I finished this course
can't find the words to speek he's a boy genius can'tget it down to your level
he is the worst,he is very smart, but can't frickin' teach or converywhathewants
Not clear at all. Teaches over your head!
very hard test, but extremely helpful, patient, and kind. always smiling.
His exams r impossible, he wants u to learn but makes it very hard to learn.
difficult course, he is never available if you need extra help
Good guy, great teacher, expects way way to much out of students on tests.
BENDER IS THE DEVIL! Unclear examples given in class, pay attention!

Tests are very challenging. Will take time to help you learn. He is a nice guy.
Makes you feel dumb. Test are too hard for intro level class
rediculously difficult exams for this level course-not with him you don't need!
sits in office hatching a plan and twisting his mustache
Gives no explanation for labs, difficult grader, never present during class
very hard grader but helpful during lab time
No Comments
explains nothing, nice guy, moderately strict grader, helpful if you ask him
Nice guy, but he's an enigma. His tests are an even bigger enigma
really tough grader but not nearly as scary as everyone makes him out to be...
Maybe smart as hell but not a people person. Nothing was ever on time from him.
Avoid this professor at all costs!! His exams are a nightmare!

All facts which don't fit his theories are just wrong.
boring, but such is the nature of seminar
If your name is Chang and you wrote the book plan on failing Bender=devil
horrible, teaches at a level too high for course, tests don't make any sense

tests can be very difficult, teaches too high for course

Hard class to understand, lectures are unclear and unexplained.
Very difficult prof. You have to tweak your brain to think like he does.
Great guy, not so great tests. Go to discussion and ask questions.
Lectures do not correspond with tests. Get a tutor if you want to learn chem.
This is a teacher for very smart chem majors. Everyone else will be lost
Sucks. Straight up. Too Hard for an Chem 1 class. He should be booted.
Hard class. No homework collected. Tests cover calculations, thats about it.

He expects that you will be made smarter by being asked difficult questions about things that he has never explained. He is kinda sexy, though.
Smart guy but can't organize his lectures. Teaches at a level waaay to difficult for a 100 level class. Everyone would fail if he didn't pad his grading scale.
difficult class, smart man, would be great at teaching an upperlevel class, but makes things way too difficult for a 100 level intro class. you know things are bad when he has to curve grades so that a 40% is a C-
You'll fail. Oh, you're the guy who wrote the textbook? Too bad, Raymond Chang, you're wrong and you'll fail too.

Structure? No. Helpfulness? No. Material fitted to class level? NO. Avoid this gaming freak at all costs
this man should be somewhere thinking up a cure for aids, not teaching, i think he missed his calling...i am yet to understand one of his answers to a student's questions, hopelessly jumps from topic to topic...very unique wardrobe decisions though:)
HORRIBLE!!! Avoid at all cost. He is to smart for his own good and he thinks all his students are as smart as he. Teaches a 100 level class at a upper class level. And his wardrobe, lets just say a color blind dog could do better.
he is in the wrong profession. easily the most confusing teacher i have ever had. should have listened when all my friends told me to slowly turn and run the other direction. but i didnt listen to advice and now im teaching myself. passing is a 39!
Will not help. Refuses to answer questions. Tests are so impossible that 25% is passing and 1/4 of the class still fails.
Hey Bender, could you explain this to me? (insert head nodding and making you feel like an idiot) Class average is a D, everyone fails everything, ridiculously hard. DONT TAKE HIM
The guy is easily a genius, but can't teach to save his soul. Refuses to answer questions or give you help if you try to find him outside of class. Also has a knack for making you feel like the stupidest person in the universe.
I have had lots of chem before and this was by far the worst. He is the worst professor to be teaching 116. His tests are impossible, his lectures not makes sense and he doesnt use the book.
he is a chemistry genius or a god if you will. but holy crap are his exams hard and the lecture never changes that much. the exam is nothing like the lecture. i knew all of the material beforehand from ap chem and the exams are harder than the ap test.

He is very willing to help if you ask. He is almost always around his office. Although challenging, his class is not impossible.
He is a nice guy, and always willing to help. Only problem is you can't understand what he is trying to say. He teaches and explains concepts a much higher level than the average student can understand. Test are SUPER hard. Find another Prof!!
I use to love and understand chemistry until I had him. The worst chemistry professor ever. He is very unorganized and confusing. His tests are impossible. GET OUT OF HIS CLASS NOW.
Oh Captain My captain. He is a great guy but you can understand him in chemestry about as well as you can figure his obsession with grey sandals and black socks
Run! If you think you may be doing good in his class, just wait....he'll make sure that you get a bad grade! Purple shirts...grey sandals...black socks...and sweat pants sums him up!
In order to get a good grade in this course you need to be devoted, and have mastery over the topics covered in class. I passed with an A.
He is a great guy. Good personality. Knows what he is teaching. His class is possible to pass if you go to class everyday and ask questions.
Ok...This prof may know what he is talking about..but the whole point of teaching is so the class knows what you are talking about...he must not get that. He is more of an upper level chem prof...not chm 115 or 116. So if you have him..i suggest switching
if this is the only major class you have then your fine because you have extra time to study and decipher what hes trying to say and he is very helpful outside of class. Otherwise Switch!!!
If you're smart and you get it, you can do well... if not get the hell out!!!
tests on material not covered in class
this is the only class i have felt hopeless in because no amout of time studying would be reflected on my exams. he never explains how to solve problems which results in questions that you have never seen before. this was my worst grade ever. switch profs
I have him for lab. He has a circus mustache. Sometimes he doesnt explain stuff very well but there are worse chem teachers. Like Renkema. He is a lot worse.
HORRIBLE. His test questions all build on the very first problem so if you get that wrong, you're screwed. Has quizzes on material we haven't even covered yet...not to mention he has no grasp of the mechanics of writing (floating commas/spelling errors)
Bender is a pretty cool guy in personality. However, his lectures do not at all prepare you for the tests and his explanations are hard to understand at times. If you didnt do well in chem in high school, there's no way youre gonna do well in this class
I took 3 chem classes in highschool and STILL didn't understand what he's talking about. The lectures/hw/quizzes do not relate to exams at all. I feel like I'm wasting my time doing the hw because it doesn't seem to help any.
Bender aka; Jack Black the pirate, is a freaking genius. But he's a horrible prof. I wouldn't suggest getting him. He's totally unclear, gives dead end examples that aren't related to the topic, and STARTS SENTENCES WITH COMMAS!!! Worst grammer I've ever seen in my life.
Compared to other Chemistry teachers that I have had, Bender is amazing. He explains things very clearly, his tests are not incredibly hard, and his grading scale is awesome! I recommend having him if you get the chance. A lot of freshman don't like him just because they don't get Chemistry.
Bender is tough, but nowhere near impossible. 80% is an A. He makes fun real-life examples, however his tests don't always seem to be everything he covers in class... regardless, he has sample tests and if you study you'll be fine. Genius and friendly as well. So not bad, not good.
his tests are absurd and he is on academic probation because too many students are failing his class--therefore, his grading system is bunk and tests way too difficult
The tests aren't too hard, the students are just too stupid.
Bender, aka Captain Morgan, is a terrible teacher for lower level classes. tests are terrible and irrelevant to material learned in class
I walked in this class with a pretty high interest in chemistry, but I walked out at the end hating the subject. He is very unclear and his tests are hard. He does give practice tests but he is still very vague on what he will be testing us.
Guys a genius. Had an A in 115 w/different prof, but thought for sure I was going to fail his class. Didn't make any sense in class, but did give a little bit of help if you went to office hours. Deffinitely avoid him though. Don't let the curved grading scale fool you!
Man, this guy is hard. Captain Morgan as students have nicknamed him is way too smart in chemistry to be teaching us lowely 115 chem students. If you are obsessed with Chem, you might like it, but chances are not.
I hated his class. His lectures were pointless and I did not learn anything. The whole time I was lost. His tests were impossible. When I asked him for help he replied with a question or told me to read the book, which I had already done many times. He expects you to know what he is supposed to teach you
DON'T TAKE THIS PROF. He doesn't teach he gives examples about things you haven't learned. I thought I had done well on the tests but then got them back! I did well in 115 and am close to failing this class.
He is a very bad professor. He does not teach well, and he does not sympathize for the students. We are there to learn, yet he does not care whether we learn or not. He grades horribly. He will mark parts of answers right and then give no credit (even though he "gives partial credit"). Very arrogant
Very bad professor. He doesn't teach what is in the book, rather by giving examples that relate to the book. I'm sooo sick of his examples that don't correlate to what he puts on the test. His tests are impossible. He doesn't try to help students, so don't waste time visiting his office.
Smart guy, knows his stuff but can't seem to explain it to his students. Exams are near impossible. Has an insane curve so you get a good grade but if you need to take CHM 116 your screwed.
Looks like a pirate, I wished I looked like a pirate. Also, he's sweet, and memorizes everyone's names. To smart for a lower level class but probably a good profesor for advanced classes.
He needs to get back on the Black Pearl and sail away. Horrible horrible HORRIBLE.
Worst teacher ever take a different one even if you have to wait a semester. Is nice and smart but can not teach.
I had him for 115 and loved him, so I took him again, despite the fact that the class was 8 in the morning. This semester he isn't as clear as he was in 115, but his grading scale does save your butt. When you deserve to fail, you end up with a C, and it really does help.
I had AP Chem in high school so I figured this would be a piece of cake. SO wrong. He's the reason I'm not a chemistry major anymore. His quizzes/exams/lectures did not relate to each other at all. And you don't need the book, he doesn't follow it anyway and the hw is only optional and doesn't help.
John takes names & looks like a pirate, but ! to little his teaching. He seemed to have diff. attitudes per topic: gen., easy topics would be presented rapidly with wit, difficult topics would be exaggeratedly exp. leaving the cookiecutter app. last
Hard and FUN!
The tests are impossible and are way too difficult for a beginner kind of class like CHM 116.
His tests are difficult. You really need to know the concepts and the meaning behind them to understand everything. I wouldn't recommend him.
He's not what you want to be teaching you.
I was going to leave a long detailed comment about how horrible a professor he is, but, to save time, I'm just going to tell you to read every other comment already posted in here. Savvy?
His class is definately challenging. However, If you don't understand something, he's always willing to help. My tips: Do the practice tests! To get an idea of what to expect, do them... do them all! And ask questions on how to do stuff. Doing so got my brain working in a particular direction that I think helped me on exams.
not as bad as everyone says! he knows his stuff, and expects the same from students.
This man is brilliant. He teaches above the level of the course, as to keep the entire class intrigued. People **** and moan before they realize he grades on a *VERY* heavy curve. If you want to learn more than you bargained for, take him. If you want the easy way out, don't.
Not bad.
Every class period, I would tune out his lectures and doodle pictures of him because I swear he looks like Boris from Rocky & Bullwinkle! Still did as well as everyone else though and laughed a hell of a lot more.
He attended class periods every day but seemed that maybe he should not be teaching...I think that his intelligence level may have been extremely high, but his teaching skills seemed to be very low. Although he did curve the class enormously, HE DID NOT TEACH WELL. I would definately recommend taking Matchett or Lavis unless u want to not learn :)
I don't think he realizes how smart he is. he thinks on an entirely different level, but grades on a very large curve. He's a real nice guy and is always in his office ready to help, so don't be afraid to ask for some.
Horrible teacher, like many others in class I studied very hard, but what he teaches in class and what you are supposed to read in the book are not on the tests. He may be smart, I'll give him that but he is an exceptionally poor instructor. I've gone to his office many times and could never get a straight answer from him. Grades on large curve but
Real tough teacher. Tries to make up for it with automatic A quizes if you show up but tests are extremely hard. Doesnt use textbook at all and is very boring!
Interesting lectures that did not translate well at ALL to exams. Easily annoyed by too many questions. Even my Chem tutor had trouble understanding what Bender wanted on the exams! Not very approachable either.Although there is a curve, unless you are a brilliant chemist already, do not take his class. Save yourself the headache.
He is a good prof. His lectures are rather pointless we writes EVERYTHING down so if you don't feel like paying attention just copy it. His tests are hard but if you get the earlier tests to practice and know those you will be fine! i never really looked at the book except to get definitions. He is helpful if you go to his office! (esp. test time
I would never recommend a proffesor like him. His tests will make you go crazy, not matter how much you study. There is no point to the difficulty of his exams.
VERY HARD Professor!! You may understand his practice exams but don't think that will help you on the real exam! Tests are way too hard and don't even cover the material taught! Expects you to remember everything chemistry from your high school years. Gets irritable with too many questions. I'm avoiding him for my further chemistry classes!
Very hard professor.
Bender is a really cool professor. He actually reads chem journals and has up to date information. People who think the class is difficult or unfair are either lazy or stupid. Go to every lecture, look at the previous exams and ask questions during discussion (but not stupid ones). Great prof. for a chem major, if you like chem you'll like him.
I came into this class with a strong affinity to chemistry along with a pretty good understanding of the subject but after his class, I ABSOLUTELY hated chemistry! His discussions are totally irrelevant to his exams which are pretty much impossible to ace even if you do study. Don't buy the book because I never used it once the entire semester.
By far, the worst prof. I have ever had...and I am not just saying that. He doesn't help students at all. The quizzes he gives in discussion are never about anything we have learned in lecture. His exams aren't about anything we have learned in lecture either. GET OUT NOW! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!! He looks like a pirate too!
best professor ever. you should definately take his class.
He is the worst professor ever. He will give you a quiz every week is discussion but he wont have taught you anything on them, so you will end up making up answers because he only grades them on completion. His exams sucks, he doesnt teach more than half of whats on them. Theres a huge like 30% curve just to cover up how badly he cant teach.
yeah, like everyone says worst teacher ever! lec never has anything to do with the exam, neither does the book.
To give him credit, he is really helpful during his office hours before an exam, but his lectures do not really correlate at all with the book material and the exams do require a lot of on the spot problem solving of stuff you've never tried before.
Not good. Smart teacher, but lectures rather poorly (does not give very many relevant examples), and discussion is completely a waste. You go to discussion and take a quiz that is only two points. Three exams and a final. Has previous quizzes and tests posted, but not all that helpful for preparing for the exams. Not a bad person, just a bad prof.
He's a really smart fellow, but I'd hesitate before taking him. Unless you have extensive background in chemistry, much of what he'll teach won't make sense. Also his lecture is entirely worthless, and I mean that very gravely and sincerely. Honestly, make sure you sign up for an SLA discussion and go every week - it's the only way you'll pass.
Don't Take the class with Bender!!!
I have gone to other professors with his practice exams and they take one look and know who it's from. He makes me frown on the inside. A lot. My insides have never been so frowny before.
GET OUT OF HIS CLASS! You will not learn anything. The class average is always low, even with is grading scale. An 80% is an A, and the class average is still a C which is less than 50%
although he is very intelligent, he is a horrible teacher. his lectures are a waste of time, his tests are ridiculous when compared to lecture and the quizzes are stupid. get out.
Really nice guy with an astounding mind, but unable to explain to mere mortals. Seems to enjoy keeping students in the dark, and revels in the idea that a 50% on the exam is average. Also, the book will not help you. Consider yourself warned.
HORRIBLE TEACHER
Can he get audited, or something? He is terrible! Unless you have a PhD in chemistry, I wouldn't advise taking him, because you will be lost. AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID!!! Honestly, should not be introductory chemistry. Perhaps may be good at instructing at the masters level, but for intro chem? Hell no.
I learned the hard way that you should never take a class from a guy who dresses like the devil every day.
Dr. Bender may be the smartest man teaching Chemistry at Grand Valley. However, his teaching style is difficult to follow because he it very theoretical. This made it very difficult to learn from. Don't take this class if you are not willing to put in your time. Because trust me, time is needed. A LOT OF IT.
He is the worst professor I have ever taken at GV. He does not explain anything to you if you ask. In discussion, he does not even do his own practice quizzes and you can write whatever on the quizzes as answers and he will not help if it is wrong. The lectures are confusing and you dont get many practice problems. I would never take him
He is the worst Professor in GV don't take him
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! Believe what you read when people say he is the $worst teacher ever. I did everything I could went to his office hours, read the book, practice tests and problems, study groups, i even sat in on SLA sections that I wasnt registered in to get more help and I still didn't understand it! Never take his class.
WOW what is there to say about John Bender other then he really is a bender. He doesnt follow the book his test are IMPOSSIBLE and he always talked off topic. he spent a whole class once talking about soap and volcanoes. I read the book got together with friends to study before every test and suprisingly managed a B which is a 70. DONT TAKE HIM
aweful teacher, didnt have a lot of chem knowledge before college, went in for help told me to come back later...completely ruined my confidence, cannot prepare for test in anyway
boooo
He is very thorough in his lectures; he usually ties in a real world example. If you read the textbook, and pay attention to his lecture you will do just fine in his class. His expectations in the exams are perfectly reasonable.
He is the worst prof I have ever had! It is so hard to study because few things on the test are like what we did in class. All he does is super long examples.
I had him for Lab....thought he was great! Was very helpful and didn't feel guilty for asking questions. Did not make me feel stupid and felt he was approachable. Would def take his lab....have to study for them but I felt my grade reflect that.
Didn't like chemistry originally, but his class didn't help. I got a tutor and I think I learned more from him than the teacher. Exams are nothing like what is in the book or taught in class.
My tutor took copies of our exams to show her chem-major friends how difficult our 116 class is...
Prof Bender is a good lab prof because he can give you an answer on how to do things. However, when asked something more complicated he can't really express what he means. I heard a lot of bad things from his lecture class. He also nitpicks the lab grading a bit. Basically, Lab = decent, Lecture = probably sub-par.
Worst teacher ever! Lectures were about random experiments people have done and did not pertain to the exams at all. I would not recommend him unless you can teach yourself.
Never ever ever take this professor. You will regret it. I am a 4.0 student and studied 25 hours for the final and at least 15 for each test and never got an A. I walked away from tests not knowing what any of it had to do with CHEM 116. He uses experiments to base his tests/lectures on. Completely pointless.
This class is very difficult to begin with, with this professor it is more difficult. He expects alot from you, you need to critically think and not just know how to do things but apply them to all situations as well. He grades on a curve because exams are so difficult. A 60% on the exams is an A. Good Luck. You'll need it.
i had Bender for lab and it was brutal. He really asks alot and has the uncanny ability to make you feel stupid. Although it was tough he was fair. Just be on top of you game when you take his class. Non chem majors i suggest finding another proff to make you life easier.
Chemistry is torture period and having Professor Bender makes it OK. He teaches chemistry the way he believes it is and applies it to real world situations. If you attend lecture, copy EVERYTHING he writes down on the board, you'll do fine in his class. If you have discussion with him be prepared to take quizzes every week.
This is an awful professor. I would not have gotten through this course if I didn't have a good high school chem teacher. He picks random unrealistic examples that make zero sense. I had to drop CHM 116 because I was so behind because of him and so unprepared. Take ANYONE but him.
This professor has no business teaching a 100 level course. No graded homework, only 3 exams pass or fail. He doesn't explain the material. He should be fired!
His lectures are hard to follow because he is everywhere on the board. And don't expect to get good grades on the exams because he seems to come up with questions that are supposed to trick you and covers things and were NEVER covered in class. Sorry if you get him, get out if you can...
Not good at all. I have done so bad and he was no help when I asked him for advice.
This class is the hardest class i have took. If you have him drop. I would study all the time and go to other classes to try to learn the material. He only has exams and there are really hard and no good way to study for them. He teaches them like a upper level class.
Dr. Bender is a genius, and that is very apparent. I have no doubt that he would do well teaching upper level chemistry courses. HOWEVER, I have never gotten below an A in chemistry and this year I was completely lost. Nothing he discusses is on the exams, and he is so hard to follow. My chem tutor and other teachers were even confused. RUN AWAY!
Awful. I was really looking forward to this class and he just ruined chemistry for me. He is condescending and demeaning. If you asked questions he didn't want to help. If you can, switch out of his class and find a new instructor because he is downright awful.
Professor Bender is a very intelligent man, but he is not meant to be teaching 100 level classes. His thoughts were frantic across the board and when asked questions he couldn't give a clear answer. The exams contained content that wasn't covered in class or the textbook. His expectations are too high for an entry level class to chemistry.
He was a horrible teacher. He did not clarify the concepts and had impossible exams that he does curve, but it is still very hard to understand. DO NOT take him at all if you want to actually understand Chemistry 115. I went to the Science Success Center and doctorates in chemistry couldn't help me with my work.
I think professor Bender is one that you love or hate. His exams are quite difficult, but if you can easily understand chemistry it isn't too hard of a class
Worst professor ever. He never helped with anything. Test extremely hard. Switch out.
Terrible professor. Our class got way behind the other chemistry classes and he rarely explains things clearly. If you don't already have a STRONG chemistry background, DO NOT take his class. He also comes off as condescending and won't help you much.
Bender's lecture was definitely the class I looked forward to the least each week. As someone who struggles with chemistry, his lectures were very confusing and unorganized. It seemed like he spent ages going over material that we learned extensively in high school, but he skimmed over all the newer, more difficult concepts.
Bender is obviously an intelligent man, but doesn't always break it down enough for others to understand. I love chemistry, and took AP in high school, but was still lost at times in his lecture. He sometimes likes to talk in circles, or just isn't clear. Also, his exams are intense, there are things that we don't go over in lecture or in readings.
Three years of college and Bender ruined my 4.0 GPA. Material was hard but attainable, until he made it nearly impossible. Tests did not reflect lecture material well, and he was rarely at his office hours. If I didn't have prior chem experience I would have been screwed... If you care about your grades, RUN AWAY!
Professor Bender is a very intelligent man, but I wouldn't know, most of what he said went right over my head. He has a very large curve on tests but thats only because no one in the class will get above a 70% without it. Do not take this class if he is your professor!
The class was probably the hardest one I took during the semester I had him. He is an extremely intelligent professor and doesn't exactly stop lecturing if someone does not understand. However, if you pay attention to the lecture and take down good notes the class is manageable. Chances are you won't get an A but you will understand chem better.
Bender is a great lecturer. His lecture are well put together and interesting. However his exams are exceptionally difficult. He has a reputation for being one of the most difficult professors in the department. If you have a good background in chemistry and math and you really want to be challenged take his course. Otherwise avoid it at all costs
I love chemistry. I do not like this class at all. When I read his reviews before I took his class I thought "these can't all be true, I'm a smart student and I can get a good grade in his class". They are all true, he is a bad professor (for me) and I would highly recommend that you avoid him. He does not teach well at all.
I absolutely loved Chemistry coming into this class and thought I had a really great understanding of prior knowledge, but this class made me switch my major. I no longer enjoy Chemistry, and I feel this class was dreaded everyday. Tests are super hard no matter how hard you study or read. Unclear in lectures. Avoid at all costs if you can.
Enjoy John Bender the guy, really nice and very smart. But the professor.. No. His exams don't seem to do much at all with what he lectured on 4 days a week. His grading scale is wonderful though it doesn't help you much.
This is the first year he has taught CHM116 in 6 years. He is a great lecturer and available to answer questions whenever. His tests are extremely difficult though. I went to the other CHM116 professors and they'd say, "this stuff shouldn't be seen until CHM461." That being said, if you put a large amount of effort in you can succeed!
His lecture style is all over the place and I spent most of my time completely lost. He could spend 3-4 days of lecture on one example, so very difficult material. No quizzes, just 3 exams and a final. Decent guy, funny and VERY smart, but not an effective lecturer. Even with the curved scale, expect to work very hard for a decent grade.
If you're taking him for chem 116 GET A DIFFERENT PROF His lectures have nothing to do with his tests and he is too smart to teach this class. Hard to relate to and obviously a genius. I could not pass the tests and when I talked to him about my grade he talked down to me as if it was as easy as pie. I'm sure he's a good guy, but it's not worth it
If you are in his class, I would highly recommend getting a tutor and getting to know as many people in your class as you can. You are all in it together, and having study groups and using as many outside resources as you can will help you keep a decent grade in his class. Worst professor I have had, good luck.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH PROFESSOR BENDER. He is a wonderfully smart man but a horrible, horrible professor. The tests are extremely difficult and despite the insane curve he applies, it's almost impossible to get a decent grade. Please, do yourself a favor and avoid this professor at all costs.
Easily the worst professor I have had so far. His lectures do nothing with his exams and he has no interest on trying to help you learn the material if you don't get it. If you care about your grade do not take this professor.
John Bender is a genius. But, this means he wants you to meet his standards. Yes, this is a hard class, you will struggle, and your grade might suffer, but in the end you'll walk out knowing more. Underneath his scary intelligence John Bender is a sweet and funny guy who will help you if you go to him, he just really wants you to put the work in.
Professor Bender is a genius, but I think that he is too smart too teach. He is a very nice guy and pretty funny, but his lectures are very disorganized and he does not explain things very well. I would avoid taking him, but it's not the end of the world if you have to take his class. This class is definitely tougher than CHM 115.
Bender is far too intelligent to be teaching this easy level of a class. He thinks that the students will all understand the material at the same capacity he understands it and uses examples that are completely irrelevant to the concepts being learned. The lectures are all over the place and it is hard to keep track of what he is teaching when.
Professor Bender is a very intelligent man. Although his class is difficult, you will be very grateful you took it with him. I studied quite a bit for this class so be ready to take good notes and read your text book for extra clarification. Ignore all of the obnoxious "DO NOT TAKE HIM" comments. If you are willing to work, you will succeed.
He is very smart, and I can see that, but he should not be teaching a 100 level class. I was confident after lectures that I knew the material, and I would study for hours for his tests, but it didn't help much. I never knew what kind of weird questions he would ask on the tests. He is very fair with grading though, especially on the final.
He's obviously very smart, but he shouldn't be teaching intro chem classes! People told me to switch out and I should have listened. He covers things very quickly, especially considering most students in his gen chem classes haven't taken chemistry in a while. He makes you feel stupid if you don't get a concept, and is a tough grader.
Horrendous professor. We had no tests leading up to the midterm exam, and then the midterm was 45% of the total grade for the course. Never really taught specific concepts in class, but instead would just spend the entire class period on one problem. If you're lucky enough to get a review sheet, he makes you go to the CSC to get answers. 0/10.
he might be the absolute worst professor at grand valley. His exams are barely relevant to the lectures and his exam "reviews" consist of content that is of a 300 level course. His statements of replacing exam grades with final grades if they are better are lies and the webassign homework is unannounced and is on topics that haven't been taught.
Probably one of the smartest guys I've ever had talk to me, but probably the worst professor. Lectures cover zero of the material on tests and web assign so might as well not go to class honestly, and everyone in the Chem Success Center will know you're his student when you ask them one of his questions on an exam review FROM A DIFFERENT CLASS.
He hands writes notes on the board every lecture but provides very unclear explanations of his notes. AVOID TAKING THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS!!!
Dr. Bender is obviously very intelligent, I took CHM 116 with him my freshman year and it ruined chemistry for me all the way up through CHM461. His lectures are not related to any specific topic, he talks about his research or things that interest him and tries to relate them. I've heard he's a good lab prof, but he should not lecture whatsoever.
If I had not taken AP chem in high school, I would have failed this class. Don't get me wrong, Bender knows his stuff about chemistry, but cannot teach it at a 115 level. Tests have nothing to do with lecture. Find another professor to take if you can.
Clearly passionate about inorganic chem but be ready to do a lot of work outside of class to understand concepts. His language during lecture is often very conceptual and hard to follow
Worst professor I have ever experienced. Tests were nothing that he talked about in lecture or the homework. Nothing ever made sense and didn't explain anything. Avoid him!!! So many people fail his class because its SO hard
Dr. Bender is a nice guy, and he grades super easily for a lab professor. However, he was a little bit unorganized, especially when it comes to grading the labs. He didn't really contribute to the lab a ton, and also wasn't the best at responding to emails. I ended up having to contact the lab coordinator to grade one of my labs.
He really doesn't explain much in lab, but if you ask him anything he will give you a well explained answer. I wouldn't take him again simply because he never did much and I am unsure how he would teach a lecture via that info. If you know what you are doing in lab though he is very fun to talk with throughout.
Doesn't care about students at all, won't explain ANYTHING, super unhelpful, tough grader, I get that Orgo Chem lab is hard but he made it so much harder, I hated coming to class.
Not a mean guy or anything just so unhelpful. id stand in front of him waiting to ask a question as he talks to another instructor abt breweries or whatever. dont ask questions you are better off asking your lab partner. He doesn't communicate expectations, procedure, anything. He was mostly a supervisor and I learned quick to not rely on him.
Don't take this class to learn chemistry. Literally the reason I switched my major out of STEM to English. Has no notes or anything outside of lecture, and writes all notes on whiteboard, so if you miss a class, you're screwed. Regardless, I still skipped a lot bc I didn't learn anything. Overcomplicates things WAY too much. Lectures =/= test.
Super smart, not the best Professor
Dr. Bender is so smart in chemistry but he's a tough guy, you will be sitting in lecture blank mind and exams are so tough. get ready to spend time with your tutor.
What he teaches in class and the homework he gives out is nothing like the exams. I showed up to every lecture and took vigorous notes, but honestly I could've shown up for half of them and understood the same amount of things. You have to go to the chem success center to understand anything. Terrible experience despite doing ok in his course.
Teaching style is very hard to follow and his notes are not 100% helpful when it comes to homework and exams. When asking for help he was somewhat condescending in his replies. I took many visits to the CSC which was EXTREMELY HELPFUL but exam questions were asked in completely different ways than how our notes and homework were set up.
Class is very exam heavy. No quizzes and HW was online and very easy. No attendance, but you MUST come to lectures to make sure you stay up to date with the content. this is not a class you want to play catch up in.He is very smart and will teach you everything you need to know as long as you pay attention. there is a big curve applied to all exams
This professor is a great person, but honestly their teaching style was awful. I did not enjoy how he would teach everything on a whiteboard and give little to no explanation on the chemistry problems. I would take my exam and homework problems to tutors and they didn't even know how to help me because of how weird the problems were worded.
If you're looking to learn a lot in this class, prepare not to. The only reason I did well in the class is because I already knew the content. He does like one math problem for the lecture, and they never go with the labs ever. Only take it if you know the content and just want the easy A.
Not a good teacher. His exams and worksheets are not related to the class content, so you have to guess what is going to be in the exams. I felt constantly lost because he made the topics harder to understand. If he is the only teacher available, I will recommend going into his class, expecting nothing but being confused. Good luck!
Test content is completely unrelated to lecture material. Lacks engagement with students and is not invested in the class. Would not recommend taking him. Avoid if at all possible
Does not create test related to content!! Also does not show example problems in class. It was truly a struggle until I decided to drop to get a better professor!!
Freshmen beware!! Avoid John Bender at all costs. He is legitimately the worst lecture professor I have ever had in my time at GVSU. His explanations are useless for understanding the problems and his tests are nothing like the reviews that he gives us to study. If you get him, switch out immediately.
I would highly recommend not taking Benders class there is minimal assignments placed in the grade book. . He doesn't teach he states information and shuts down students questions. Also he is a terrible grader as he has marked students wrong for the correct answer but you have to go to office hours to find out.
This professor is very challenging to have. He spends his lectures going over theories and the "why" behind what we are learning but does not give a lot of examples or problems you would see on an exam. He is such a heavy grader on tests and homework but doesn't give a lot of it so the assignments he gives are a big part of your grade.
john bender is not a good professor at all. he is rude when asked a question and tests on material not taught. please avoid if you can. the university needs to seriously find a replacement
Professor Bender is smart, but he can't teach to people who aren't chemistry majors. He both over-explains simple concepts and can't answer questions in a way non-chem majors would understand. The tests are hard, so study the old tests and the material well (do not study problems out of the book. Most are not on the test.)
Grade is based on 4 exams. Lecture is very easy problems, but the exams are pretty difficult. He has his unique way of explaining things.
Bender's teaching style is very old-school - he uses the whiteboard extensively, but can be vague in his explanations. Exams don't align well with lectures, so unstuckstudy AI and study groups are a must to do well.
I enjoyed 115 so much, I had an amazing prof and was a bit excited for 116. 116 with Bender made me want to cry every day. He is very obviously an intelligent man who knows chm very well, but there is such a disconnect between his knowledge and teaching it. He expects too much for a gen chm prof. Passed because of an insane cuve 60%=B
I don't even have Dr. Bender for my Orgo Lab (CHM 246); however, he subbed for one of my labs when Dr. Hart was unavailable, and it was the worst lab I've ever had. I asked him a reasonable question, and he looked me up and down like I was stupid, and then finally gave me an answer after waiting for 10 seconds. Also, he whisper-talks. Frustrating.
This professor is survivable, but he isn't good at explaining. He isn't very helpful outside of class, but he will clear up questions the whole class has, though his explanations often are hard to understand and seem to reach for content outside of class content. If you have to take him don't worry his exams are graded fairly but hard.
