Most comments are pretty accurate. Very smart professor. Knows what he's talking about but his class is really hard to follow. Most of my classmates and I were lost everyday. However, it is an easy A... do homework and study for the midterm/final from the homework's multiple choice and you'll be good. Dont take this class if you want to understand

Phenomenal man. Wouldn't have wanted to navigate the COVID quarter with anyone else. That being said, he is pretty high level- I could see how having him for intro as a non-econ major might be a bit tough. There's a good bit of writing requiring you to apply what you learn, but he's a fair grader. Take him! Especially if you're an economics major.

Prof. Berdell is a great professor but as a non-econ major he really assumes that you understand the concepts and graphs he mentions. If you are an econ major, he's worth it but if you are taking the class as a requirement he's not it. 2 midterms exams (essay + mc). Good dude, tough class. Choose with caution. Was a rough quarter, but learned a lot

I found Berdell to be a very boring professor. He's a nice guy overall, but he loses his students when he's talking. He teaches you as if you are professional economists, making it seem super complicated, even when this class was a piece of cake. As long as you do the quizzes and write good short papers, you will be fine.

Professor Berdell is a good guy, with a passion for Economics. I took him for Macroeconomics and it wasn't as bad as I had presumed. He makes it pretty accessible and links most of the topics to current world situations, which makes it easier to understand. All in all, a decent professor -- easy class to pass if you put in the work.

I am taking ECO 106 in-person with this professor. I really appreciate how he gave us the option of either reading the textbook or just watching the videos instead of doing both. He cares about students and their time. Very lenient. good class.

The reviews about him on here are accurate. He is a nice guy but he assigns way too much work. The class as two midterms that are very difficult and my final outlook ended up being 10 pages long. On the flip side, he is a fairly easy grader you just have to put a lot of time into his class. He is also very scatterbrained and hard to follow in class

I'd never been as lost as I was in this class. I almost never understood what was going on despite paying attention, never missing class, attending office hours, etc. I wanted to like the class but the content was so confusing and there wasn't enough explanation for anything despite 3/4 of the being entirely lecture based.

Overall, John is a great guy. He's very passionate about economics, so if you're also passionate about econ, then he's a great professor. But, his lectures get confusing and if you don't read the textbook (which is at least 30 pages per chapter) you're gonna fall behind very quickly.

Professor Berdell is super nice. His class is mainly lectures and it gets kind of boring. He's very passionate about econ but if you aren't someone majoring in econ it might be a bit confusing. Quizzes after every chapter which are online. There are 2 midterms which are both a tiny essay and mc. Try and you'll pass. Easy grader.

This professor doesn't care about what is going on in your personal life. He offered zero recourse when I said I couldn't make the final exam. Without guidance, he let me slip away with an F. Without empathy for students, he shouldn't be teaching. I retook the class and got a B with someone else. I have done well in every other class.

I took Professor John Berdell for my macroeconomics class my freshman year and I wish I would have known about rate my professor prior. This professor gets lost in his words and does not teach. Also, has very long boring lectures in which you will not learn much. Not tech savvy. All quizzes and tests are online. Easy grader.

Took special topics in global economic history and loved this class. Interesting topics covered and enjoyed the format of this class. Berdell is an amazing professor and really cares about his students, even in an online course. Weekly pre recorded video lectures with a mini quiz, occasional short discussion posts. One midterm and one final essay.

This professor was great! Definitely take this class if you want an easy class. The only times I spent more than 30 minutes a week on this class were the midterm and final which were both easy and he's and easy grader. All assignments are open from day one so you could do 6 weeks of work in about 2 hours. Really chill professor. Take him!!

Professor Berdell is super passionate about his lectures. Sometimes the lectures can be a little confusing, but overall he makes the class pretty easy to pass. Quizzes, midterm, and final are all taken at home, which helps a lot. Workload is decent — expect maybe two group projects. If you're looking for an easy pass, I'd definitely recommend him.
