Easy-going, Hah-vahd educated, very knowledgeable, esp. Intellectual History.
Great teacher fair grader.lecture you decide
extremely thought-provoking class. fascinating.
Old Harvard PHD/intelligent/thought provoking/ good for A&S second writing req.
Hated this class but all soph seminars probly suck. Intimidating man.
barks worse than his bite. Lecture seems hard, but he grades fairly easily
Lecture is intellectually stimulating; very knowledgable; Grades easy, though
Best class I have taken here. Lectures were works of art.
This is a PHIL class not HIST! CRAZY boring lectures, easy B though
Has dedicated his life to this class (in his words). Incredible A+++++++++++++++
A 20 page Term paper...Lil bit each week u get an A, he only looks really mean!!
A bit intimidating, but helpful, knowlegeable, B minimum on term paper
He is crazy, and i thought hilarious. easy grader. very interesting.
Intimidating, but very easy grader. Extremely intelligent. Learned a lot.
Lectures terribly boring and confusing. No clue if your not a history major.

the worst.
is the class hist102 or hist502? i cant tell....
He teaches this entry level class like its lvl 802. Hes is NOT OKAY. Very unclear. NOT funny. NOT helpful. COCKY harvard ****. Don't take unless you're a hist major.
If you like Mr. Burns from 'The Simpsons', check this guy out.
I'm a good student and this was a hard course. Take it with another professor if possible or be prepared to not get an A
this class is not ok. intro level but seems like hist3543443, very detailed.
high level of intellectual stimulation, easy grader, funny, and looks like Mr. Burns.
This is a challenging class, but I think it is valuable for a history major. He forces you to learn a lot whether you want to or not; if your taking this just to meet a requirement, I respectfully suggest another prof.
Horrible class, not easy. I took it just for a group and I had to study more for this class then for my major classes. Dont take it!
Very unclear. Not Funny. Hell. He is the Devil. Kill yourself before taking this class!!!!!!!
worst ever, help yourself and dont take, cocky and everyone does horrible on the first exam, I am a good student, worked my ass off and got a B, which i considered lucky!!
Avoid at all costs! Memorize the book, memorize every little thing he says, watch the History channel 24x7 and you might get a B. If you fail the final, you fail the class, but if you get an A on the final, you get an A in the class. AVOID this prof!
Very very easy class. Knows his material and teaches it well. I rarely studied for this class and got an A-. If you thought this class was hard, try a chem engineering class.
Nice guy.
Horrible Horrible MAN
Rubs people the wrong way initially because he seems pompous, and holier than thou type of approach. however he is a good guy, generous grader, and friendly. Knows his material extremely well, and is extremely hard. Not too difficult if you go to class.
seminar on WW1...20 pg paper and that is it. IF you need a seminar, take bernstein.
Never met anyone with a better mastery of the english language. If you're a thinker, he'll be able to tell. And you'll be able to tell cuz he'll smile. If you don't like to think for yourself avoid him cuz he'll tear you a new one. Larned much from
wwi seminar=1 quiz the 2nd week,a presentation and a 20pg paper at the end of the semester.-this man is a know it all-a bit pompous-but dont let his harvard education or advanced age scare you--i got an A...if you enjoy history you will learn much.
Most hilarious man ever. Take him if you want to learn something and hear him make fun of stupid people. Old and crazy and awesome. Probably the only prof at UD with huge Top Gun poster in his office.
Nice guy who knows his stuff well! Idiots should not take this class! Challenging class - if you don't want to learn a lot, don't take this class. If you go to class and do the (minimal) readings assigned you should have no problem getting at least a B+.
Learn something? Are you kidding? I learned nothing and was bored to tears twice a week by his disorganized pompous ramblings. If you want an A, go to another class, it ain't gonna happen here. Arrogant bitter old man.
Ugh - never had to drink coffee before until I had this class at 11:00 am 2 days a week - very boring - just talks and you have to take notes - tests are hard, either essay questions or ids that you have to define - but he curves a lot
Definitely not an easy course, but he's funny as hell. Take it just to hear him make fun of Republicans and non-Harvard grads.
Its boring and mostly philosophical. Class isnt to hard. Take for a second writing. Tests were okay--essay. Hard to take good notes.
Was easy in the sense that all you had to do was turn in a paper and thats your grade, but it still gave me heartburn. The lectures are boring, but you only get that for half the time, the other half you just check in with him about your progress. I do suggest not waiting until a month before the papers due before really getting into it (my fault).
If you're into hearing really fascinating ideas for a few hours each week, take this class. Bernstein's knowledge is enclopedic and his presentation is magisterial. His tangents are illuminating, but sometimes distract from the points he expects you really to know.
I'm not sure that one could describe Bernstein in 350 words. I will not, therefore, try to do so. I will say this though. Take his class. It was the highlight of my week. There are far too few professors at this school of his caliber.
bernstein is the man
modern intellecutal history. difficult subject, but makes pretty clear. two relatively easy blue book tests and a decently easy paper. you must go to class and pay attention to get a good grade. if you miss a class you be losts when you have to answer about the subject on a tests. Very smart guy, went to Harvard. cant really BS philosophy.

WWI seminar... It's nice to not have to go to class while you're working on your 20+ page paper (4-5 weeks of just conferencing 1 on 1 for 5-10 minutes). I have a suspicion the grade was based solely on the paper. If you can't write well he will slaughter you. I managed an A- but he had me sweating bullets. I was glad I took him though.
This class is awful. It is very difficult to decipher his ramblings. His tests are insane, the questions aren't too hard, but he grades them very tough. Don't take this class unless you have to. It's incredibly boring, and Bernstein is nothing but a cynic who thinks he is better than everyone else and his students are ignorant and worthless.
Seriously, go to class. He grades the tests like a lunatic - you have to know everything or you absolutely will lose points. This class is NOT an easy A. Write his lectures word-for-word and study every night and you might get a B if your tests meet his standards.
Seriously, do not take him. people say hes funny, he makes funny comment once every 5 classes and the class average on the first test was literally, LITERALLY failing.. he wouldnt say the exact grade but they seemed to be around 45. i went to every class, studied from the test book, took notes, and thought i did good then i got the exam back..DONT
I feel like it was a privilege to be able to take a class with this man. He's a Harvard grad, eloquent speaker, witty, and very fair. I'm not even a history major, and I learned more in this class than any other at UD. If you want an easy A, he's probably not for you, but if you actually want to learn something, take him.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! the only good thing about the class is that for a month you don't have to go. You will write one paper 18-20 pgs, you pick the topic. He grades so harsh and focuses so much on the english of the paper rather then the history that he should be a english professor. I am a hist maj and I have had my share of tough prof, he is the wrst
It's a privilege to take a class with this man. Harvard grad, witty as hell (awesome history nerd jokes), knows his stuff. It's probably in your best interests to take your laptop to class to type notes, because EVERYTHING is important and it's nigh impossible to keep up if you're handwriting. Emphasis on dates. Take him!
Brilliant man, class was much harder than expected however. Puts a lot of emphasis on dates and what he says in lecture, places slight emphasis on what is in textbook but is still good resource for studying. If your looking for an easy A look elsewhere.
This class is intended for those who look for a challenge during their academic careers. Determination and curiosity for the subject are your best allies in attaining a decent grade in the class. However challenging and unrealistic his expectations may at times be you come out a stronger and more confident student.
Although very intelligent, he stared at us if we stopped taking notes. Rarely had to use the book, it was all about his lectures. Study everything particularly dates. He comes across as arrogant but he is a nice guy. 50 minute class seemed like forever! Final is a toughy so prepare at least two weeks ahead.
Do not take this class. He just goes off on these random tangents and expects you to know everything he says. Tests are really hard, he pulls stuff outta nowhere. Most boring guy ever doesnt even try to help you out
Great professor! Many fear him and for legitimate reasons, but if you actually show up to all his classes, take detailed notes and study them, you will get an A or A-, but you must put in the effort. He is a very knowledgeable and witty Harvard man. You can do it! Just stay focused and give it your all. Details are key. A must for future historians
Do yourself a favor and don't take this class. Very difficult and boring. Bernstein is a very intelligent man but expects way too much out of a 100 level class. I took it for a group and it became my most dreaded class of the semester. AVOID
This was my hardest class of the semester and I'm a History major. The information is very dense and it's hard to study for. Bernstein's a nice guy, but his class is intense.
He definitely knows his stuff, but he wants you to know just as much. He throws out one of the 3 exams which is good because his exams are ridiculously hard. He's not a bad guy and he doesn't want you to fail, but his class is incredibly difficult for a 100 level course.
This man is brilliant. I've taken several classes with him and loved every second of it. He has an awesomely dry sense of humor that goes over most kids' heads, but if you understand him, you'll appreciate him. His class is demanding but you learn so much because he is so educated. And he's one of the best lecturers I've ever had.
Professor Bernstein's knowledge is encyclopedic and his lectures are eloquent. Grades are based on a midterm, final, and paper. He is a very generous grader in that he weighs whichever exam grade is higher. If your writing is lacking, he will be sure to let you know. I very much enjoyed this course and highly recommend it.
I had him twice (268 and 102) and both classes were great. He is very knowledgable about history and it seems like he knows everything. He is a very tough grader in 268, but it really helps you improve your writing. In 102 your grade is basically your final so if you get an A on it you get an A. He is still extremely tough, but you learn A LOT
Save yourself! While the second-writing requirement for this class was a mere ungraded two page reaction paper, the class was not worth it. He goes on rants that never seem to end and never answer his point. He began a sentence once with "Science is..." and then went on a tangent and never told us what science is. Also, it's more an English class.
John Bernstein is a very very knowladgable man.He comes to class with literally nothing, no powerpoint, no overhead, nothing. He speaks for 50 minutes straight and whatever notes you collect is what you get.The textbook is a must, and must be read, its easier if you bring the book to class to follow along. 3 test all year, much emphasis on the final
Bernstein is incredibly smart but his lectures can be hard to decipher. He actually expects you to do work. One 2 page paper (second writing requirement), a midterm, one 8-10 page term paper, and a final. If you can pay attention and type fast, you'll be able to catch most of what he says and sort through it all later.
Extremely knowledgable about the topic, but rants forever about obscure references that have nothing to do with the class and treats every student like a fellow PhD of European history. Also made a few r.a.p.e jokes that made everyone feel pretty awkward.
I didn't like how he did his lectured. They seemed a bit unorganized and it was difficult to figure out what needed to be written. I worked at it, and ended up getting a B+ in the class with good note taking and studying. I rarely read the book at all. A bit difficult, but manageable.
Second time I've had Bernstein. HIST 268 is a writing class. If you're a decentgood writer, most of his criticism will be grammatical. Feedback is almost entirely constructive and he cares about his students succeeding. Interesting to talk to when meeting in office. Argument MUST be solid to get a good grade, considers quiz score in final grade.
He doesn't give any homework, but thats no reason to take the class. He takes points off on the tests as he pleases. He also does not give notes, but expects you to get everything he says. If you stop paying attention for even one minute, you're going to get lost and miss a ton of notes. He does not give out study guides.
Never take a class with him as the professor. He is not helpful at all, gives no notes, and just rambles the entire class. He spends more time bashing conservatives than he spends giving helpful information. You never know what he will put on the exam, and you will most likely do horribly on the exam.
While the class is not for everyone, I think Professor Bernstein is a fantastic lecturer and teacher, we often spoke politics in the morning before class together. Only three grades for the entire class, but he is willing to ditch the first grade if the last two are improved, definitely study and take detailed notes. I had three full pages a class.
One of the worst teachers I've had. Openly admits he doesn't follow the textbook, doesn't use slides and doesn't have a paper outline to follow while he lectures. The test is on whatever he says and he tends to drone on, skip around different years and is quite boring. He's nice enough as a person but he's past his prime when it comes to teaching.
Bernstein has great lectures. He gives way more background information than is in the textbook and really pieces all the major ideas of the history together to form a coherent narrative. Very tough grader. Mentions being Jewish a lot (where it often doesn't apply). But overall solid professor.
Professor Bernstein teaches by asking Socratic questions: probing and often complexly phrased. As an introvert who certainly did not have an auditory learning style, it was difficult and stressful. Two 5-pagers, one 10-pager. No notes, no projector. Colloquium theme was "political philosophy," lots of theoretical discussion. Makes you think hard.
Prof. Bernstein is extremely knowledgable, but expects freshmen to be able to perform the same level of analysis after reading philosophers that he can. He can be funny at times, but I suppose can rub students the wrong way. He's very picky ab using proper grammar, but if your essays are well-formulated, grammar issues won't bring your grade down.
Worst class I have ever taken at UD. Terrible experience did not like this mans method of teaching whatsoever. Just stands in front of the class and rambles on for 50 minutes. Also, if you try to follow along with the book he has an issue with that during class. Smart man just should not be teaching. Terrible.
He is very knowledgeable, and expects a lot from his students. His lectures are organized and cohesive, but he doesn't write anything down so take notes nonstop from the second he begins talking. Read the textbook to fill in things that don't make sense but he highlights key points in class so plan on attending every one. Grade consists of 3 exams.
THE single worst professor that I have had in my two years at this University. His lectures are not cohesive and he talked about everything other than what the course was supposed to be about. Insanely harsh grader. He legitimately yelled at students in my class for "excessively drinking water." DO NOT TAKE He is judgemental and ridicules students.
I took HIST102 two years ago with Bernstein and I still haven't recovered emotionally.
Very easy class in terms of workload. Pretty easy class in terms of grading. A single hour's lecture probably included all of the following: brilliant descriptions of some things; unexplained references to stuff non-history buffs don't know; rambling asides on baseball or politics. Nice guy (unless he thinks you're an idiot).
