Random in class reaction papers so you do to have to go to most classes. Tests are open note. Multiple papers, all pretty easy to do well. A few extra credit opportunities. He really wants students to do well. He's a super nice guy and the course material is interesting too! Overall, recommend!
Bickford is fun and engaging. Tons of extra credit, four exams with two optional makeups that substitute your lowest grade. One term paper about a "problem" you have. I-clicker part of grade. Read the book before exams, and the LearnSmart modules prepare you for them. You need 4 clicker session and 5/10 reaction papers, all in random classes
Cool guy
I took personality psych online and it was extremely easy with bickford. The TA was a way harder grader than he actually was which sucked but it all worked out in the end.
He's a very enthusiastic professor, and he knows what he's talking about. The material is really interesting, and the in-class writing assignments can be kind of fun. The little side papers he has us write aren't bad, but the tests can be kind of confusing once you sit down. He lets you bring in your own study guide, but it's still challenging.
He's a great professor. Genuinely knows and loves the material he's teaching. All tests are open note, and he has a makeup test every 2 exams. Puts all his slides online, but going to class helps solidify the information. Overall, pretty easy class, interesting stuff, and a fun professor.
He is a very easy teacher. He is funny and makes going to class more tolerable. He lets you use a cheat sheet on tests and even gives two make up tests in case you did bad or missed a test. He really knows what he is talking about.
Super nice guy who wants students to do well. His tests are all open note so make sure you have thorough notes. He does reaction papers a few times for attendance and iclicker for extra credit. The papers he assigns are super easy and easy to BS. I did all of mine an hour before class and got As or Bs.
AWESOME! He is such a nice guy and truly cares about his students. He makes everything in class easy to understand. You'd have to try to not do well in this class. I'm taking a class next semester just because he's teaching it. Don't buy the book, you don't need it.
He's so much fun!! He is very entertaining and really makes the class interesting and engaging despite it being a huge lecture! i would recommend this class in a second!
hes awesome! I thought this class would bore me to death but it was a class I really looked forward to because of his energy and stories to go along with the material. id recommend his psych101 to anyone.
my favorite professor here at umass! all tests are open notes, lots of extra credit, and he cancels classes when appropriate (around holidays) I'm taking another class taught by him just because he is a great teacher and its easy to get an A
Words cannot explain how easy this course is. He lets you take cheat sheets into the exams…buff said
Awesome class! Bickford is a awesme guy. you should go to class. Spontaneous in class assignments. He goes slow enough so you can take notes and makes the class laugh. All homework assignment are online, & are through a online text book. You are allowed a cheat sheet for the exams (4 of them &no final only a paper).
Relateable, sensitive to student diversity, approachable, friendly, sense of humor, laid back, yet passionate about his material. Allows notes for tests! TAs also very helpful! Had him for social psyche and psyche of the LGB experience (seminar). DO IT.
I thought this class was very corrupt. The online hw is ridiculous and does not help you prepare for tests. He only teaches about 30% of what would be on the test and the rest you just have to know from the book. Also he doesn't help and makes the Ta's do all his work they seem to not know what's going on either. Please find a different professor!
Lectures are straight forward but he doesn't do a great job elaborating to really drive in the concepts. Only used the book to look up terms for exams. Four open notes exams, random in class writing assignments and a couple projects. Overall a very manageable class with high opportunity to get a good grade.
Professor Bickford really just wants his students to do well.
Take this class! This class was by far much easier than half of the classes I took in high school. You are allowed a full cheat sheet front and back for exams. You should go to lecture because of reaction papers, but he's lenient on attendance and assignments (you can miss a couple). Bickford is also funny and pretty chill.
I took Bickford's Psych 100 class in Fall 2013 and lemme tell you, I was relieved when I saw that he was teaching Psych 360 for Fall 2014. BEST PROF AT UMASS HANDS DOWN. Cheat sheets, easy tests, assignments clearly laid out for the semester. However, the work may pile up IF you don't have good time management skills cuz it creeps up on you quick
He's a great professor, lets you use a cheat sheet on your tests so it's difficult to get a bad grade. He's human, he has his off days, so he isn't always working at 100%, but otherwise he's a good teacher. This is my second time having him as a professor, and he's got great spirit. I would definitely recommend him!
He doesn't care about course material and makes no effort to make it interesting. Nothing on his slides are on the exams, I don't even know where the exam questions come from actually. In addition, the exams are hard despite the cheat sheet. I dreaded going to class.
Pretty easy class! Go to class for the reaction papers and iclicker questions. Lots of extra credit opportunities and cheats sheets on the exams!
Class is pretty boring but you have to go to do the reaction papers. You are allowed to bring notes to the exams but the exam questions are confusing.. I'm not sure where he gets them from. He is a nice and funny professor, but not great at explaining the material.
Open note exams . Really sweet guy. Have to buy a textbook but it''s not that bad Would suggest taking this Interesting material
As long as you stay on top of your work, you'll do just dandy
I took this class and PSYCH370 with Bickford and he is a great teacher. He tries as hard as he can to keep everyone engaged. Tests were open notes. There were some mandatory papers but they were mostly opinion-based. Will get an "A" in his class if you 1) show up to class 2) take good notes 3) utilize the study guide and extra credit
He's a cool professor. Exams are open note - read the textbook though, there's stuff on exams that he doesn't mention in class. 2 makeup exams to replace your lower exam grades. In-class assignments make attendance mandatory, but they're easy. 2 personal explorations (papers) and 1 group project (paper) but they're really easy.
He sets up the syllabus so clear cut, its easy to get 100% in the class if you really want. SO many options for extra credit and his lectures are pretty entertaining and informative for such large classes. But he isn't very involved in the class, topics, or the students
This is probably one of the easiest classes in the psych department. There are 4 exams and 2 make-ups that are all open-notes. He requires you to do 7 in class assignments that you'll get credit for if you complete them and there are a few very minor papers. If you take this class you can prioritize others over it.
I've taken Psych 100 and 360 with him. He is incredibly sweet and very understanding. As everyone has said, there are four tests and two make ups and the two make ups can replace tests grades. The one thing I recommend is going to class. The reaction papers he assigns come out of nowhere and if you miss them, you can't make them up.
His classes are pieces of cake, but don't expect to get A wo doing anything. He's clear, funny and wants his students to succeed. Cheat sheet for exams, but I'd recommend reading the book and study from it. In-class RPs and some assignments, which aren't hard. I'd recommend him, esp. for Psych 100 and non-majors who want an easy GenEdelective.
Bickford is hilarious and really wants you to do well. Bring your iClicker and reaction papers every day, and always do your online assignments on time -- he drops your worst grades on them anyways. Do the make up exams, too... even if you just score a few points better, it will improve your final grade by a lot.
Bickford is great! He truly wants the best for his students. One of my favorite professors at UMass, be in as many classes as you can with him. It is nice to be in a small class with him because you really get to know him, which is nice in a large schoollarge major.
Bickford is great. Lectures can be a little boring but he tries to make the best of it. 4 exams, all open-note, no final and option to make up 2 exams for better grade. A few minor essays required. Definitely not a stressful class
Bickford is great. Lectures can be a little boring but he tries to make the best of it. 4 exams, all open-note, no final and option to make up 2 exams for better grade. Couple of easy essays required. Would recommend.
He cares about his students as well as the subjects he teaches, and gives you numerous opportunities to do well. As long as you put effort in, you will do well in his class. open notecheat sheet exams, no quizzes, response papers and a few other assignments as well as iclicker. If you do poorly in his class, it's your own fault.
Awesome prof
Bickford is a really nice teacher and tries to keep the lectures interesting. Very lenient with grading, allows an ample amount of missed assignments. Attendance is important if the material is new to you, he puts his powerpoints online but they are very vague skeleton notes of the actual lecture. Homework done in online textbook, no physical book.
Bickford made his lectures fairly easy to understand and used funny, relatable examples. I loved this course and if you miss an assignment here and there you'll be okay! Cheat sheets are allowed for exams, and your highest grades are selected for homework grades! Go to class; it will only benefit you!
This guy is the man. His class is very relaxing and easy which makes for a good learning environment. As long as you study before hand and attend most of the lectures, you will be fine! Plus, he is helpful in showing examples and explaining the material.
lectures can be boring because he reads directly off of his powerpoint slides which are put online. 4 exams that are all open note, two optional makeups if you dont like your first grade. must do 5 of the 7 in class assignments, 2 of the 6 personal papers (2-4 double spaced), and 1 group project. possible to earn up to 18 extra points EASY A
You can either go to the class and pay attention and skip the textbook, or read the textbook and skip the lecture. Both is overkill. There are a lot of online assignments but they're quick and easy. Can get a ton of extra credit through participating in research studies.
He is a very cool guy and is very patient students. I genuinely like him as a person for his smart and chill humor. If you are going to take Psych 100, don't hesitate to take it with him if you want a cool guy.
Bickford was a great teacher (especially if you have taken Psych before). He was clear in what he said and used slides and posted them online. He allowed cheat sheets during exams and does not believe in midterms or finals. He gives an exam that covers the past two exams and it replaces your grade (if it is higher).
Show up to class, he had participation papers every so often which will help your grade. TA's grade most of your work and they rarely give you full credit. Extra credit thorough SONA. Most boring class I've ever taken, no one pays attention because the exams are open note. When you look across the lecture hall everyone is on their phones and comps.
He's a really great professor who has MANY ways to get extra credit. You'd have to actively try to fail this course.
So many online homework assignments, the class was interesting & he put PP online. The online assignments were easy but do take up a good chunk of time. The tests were sort of difficult, but he let you bring a cheat sheet to every test, one 8 12 x 11 piece of paper, front and back, and you could literally fit everything on that piece of paper.
Bickford's class was amazing. He is a really great professor and he makes going to class fun and interesting. There was a lot of homework in this class, but it was really easy and definitely manageable. Everyone should try to take a class with Bickford at least once before graduating.
He's a great professor! Took this class as a freshman, thought I was going to be out of place but it was an easy A. Doesn't require much reading. Papers are short and mostly reflections, so you don't have to do research. You can put in minimal effort and still get an A. All the tests are open note. Just copy down highlighted words from the book.
Love Bickford, pay attention in class and do the essays and you'll get an A
Bickford is a great professor, he is very clear in what he expects in the work you turn in to him. However, his tests can sometimes be the more difficult part of the course depending on the material covered, but overall they are not too bad.
Easy A if you put in the effort & do the extra credit. Great guy. One 5 page paper, 4 tests, can retake tests. If you took AP Psych in high school this class is a breeze. Textbook is freeonline. Homework can be time consuming, but do them all early and you'll be fine it's not bad. random mandatory attendance through random iclicker questions
Open note exams, and he gives a study guide that practically has every topic he will ask a question on. Take notes on every detail and concept he talks about in class, and aside from the small homeworks, I never studied for ANY of his exams and the lowest I got was a 94. Easy A, and somewhat interesting.
I absolutely love Professor Bickford's teaching style and class policies. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well. He is understanding and chooses the highest grades for grading and has makeup tests that everyone can take. I not only did really well in this class but I also learned a lot.
Really nice guy by the class is PAINFUL. Powerpoints are ridiculously boring - half the time he reads right from them and the other half I have no idea what he's talking about. Tests were too hard for the quality of lecture... 4 shorter papers, 3 projects and surprise in class reaction papers. Wasn't the absolute worst ever but not enjoyable...
I loved this class. Tests were open note (take notes from the textbook) and the lowest one was dropped (no final or midterm). Assignments were super easy as long as you read the instructions and followed them. Grading was very lose and based heavily on your own opinions. Bickford is a great teacher. If you put in a little effort you will get an A.
Funny guy, really makes the class interesting. Gives lots of leeway on assignments.
Awesome class. 4 exams and 2 make ups (to drop your lowest two scores). He is an accepting person and wants everyone to feel good about themselves, my impression at least. I have had him now for Social Psych and Personality and his grading criteria ranges so don't think one bad grade will mess you up! He wants students to succeed.
Great professor, knows his psychology very well, extremely enthusiastic about the topic, can be unclear at times but never usually an issue
Easiest class ever; just do the readings and you will ace it. Online homework based and the tests are simple if you read. Only one project all semester. The lectures may not be the most exciting but I'll take it. Go to class- there are reaction papers
Great guy, really funny.
Prof. Bickford is very laid back and a really good professor. His lectures are very thorough and he lets you have a cheat sheet on every exam AND there's no final! One essay due the whole semester that's very easy and he is very lenient about letting you miss things. I really loved Prof. Bickford and would definitely take one of his classes again.
Tests arnt the worst if you prepare well
Easy class. He gives you 6 short papers, but you only have to do 4. There are 3 longer papers, and you only have to do 2. easy grader. There are 4 tests, and you have the chance to retake 2 of them for a better grade and they are open-note (make very detailed notes though- questions are mostly from the book, not the lectures) easy psych elective
I LOVED his class. Even if you aren't interested in psychology, this is still an awesome class to take. He's very funny and makes everything easy to understand. Sometimes the lectures are long but as long as you do the homework you'll understand everything he's talking about. He gives a lot of extra credit and you get a cheat sheet on every test
This class was pretty easy although there is only homework which is long but easy. You get a cheatsheet on the test, which if you type your notes you can fit all of them on it. Extra credit is a plus. There is also a 5 page paper that isn't too difficult. There are in class clicker questions which are random & graded for participation + writing.
There's 4 midterms and he allows one 2 sided cheat sheet on each one. The class has makeup exams and he allows students to miss a couple of classes and assignments. The class requires ALOT of reading and tests are tough.
Professor Bickford is a great guy and he knows what he's talking about. His lectures can be long and boring but the exams are exactly like the lecture slides. He assigns a lot of online homework due weekly and the assignments are time consuming but incredibly easy. Pay attention and do the homework. Lots of extra credit at the end of the semester.
Explains topics well, gives very detail syllabus and expectations, four exam, two make-up exams, no final. Textbook provided for free
Bickford is a great professor who makes the subject pretty interesting. He shows videos and uses studies to give examples for the subjects we are learning. The best thing about this course is the amount of extra credit he gives, which can bring your grade up a lot at the end if you take advantage of it. Lots of reading the textbook.
Prof Bickford is the BEST psych teacher there is. He made me want to declare a psychology minor! His lectures can be a bit long, but some classes you just watch videos which breaks up the lectures. His grading criteria is really straight forward, and he wants you to do well in his class. He offers extra credit and lets you use cheatsheets!TAKE IT!
Such an easy class! You have to try to not get an A. He lets you have cheat sheets and you can retake exams. Seriously would recommend. You should attend class because there are iclicker questions and reflection papers but it's interesting and worth it.
He is always giving students opportunities to get extra points if they do poorly. He allows you to retake tests and offers extra credit points. Only have one paper and a total of three tests. He is funny and makes the class interesting. Iclickers and reaction papers count for points.
Very easy A. Lectures are usually entertaining, attendance is semi mandatory - there are iclicker and reaction papers but only half of them count. You get cheat sheets and there's one easy paper at the end that requires no research. There's no final. Definitely would recommend
Interesting class. Tests are easy, unlimited open notes as long as you typed or wrote them yourself. Grading on homeworks and in class assignments a little tough. But would take again as its an easy high grade
Awesome professor, easy class. Just study and you'll get an A.
He's a good professor, easy to understand and concise. As long as you pass in your work on time and give adequate effort you'll get an A. Tests are easy because you get your notes, papers and projects are easy and 3-4 pages max. Dont buy the book.
Easy. Do all the work and you will get an A. I woke up on the morning of the final exam not knowing that there would be an exam, and by copying down enough info to my cheat sheet I got a 95. In other words, this class is easy as long as you do the assignments and perform well on exams. However, he is somewhat unresponsive to emails.
Professor Bickford is hilarious. He is also very clear when teaching material. He assigns a lot of homework, but they are so easy. There are 4 exams which he allows cheat sheets for and a final 5-page self-analysis paper. Go to class and you'll definitely earn an A.
Random Iclickers, so go to class. You have homework every week or so and it can take a while. 4 tests with 2 make ups. A TON of extra credit opportunities. Overall, take this class it's very easy but expect a lot of reading and homework.
He's an intelligent, reasonable, and caring professor. He gives TONS of extra credits and a lot of his policies show how much he cares about his students. He really wants you to do well in his class. It's a very big class because there are like 500 students in each section so it will be less personal though.
He is an awesome guy and makes the class fun an interesting. There is a good amount of homework but it is all easy. He gives a ton of extra credit too. Good gen ed.
He was by far the best teacher my freshman year. He gave out free points, had easy homework, ad was overall a straightforward grader. Tests were easy and the assignments had much leniency to them. If you missed one or two assignments of a certain category, he would drop them. The exams had a double sided note sheet which made the class hard to fail
This was by far the easiest class I've ever taken. Participation is "required" but he only checks by using the iClicker to answer questions in class and you only need to do a certain number of these to still get a 100 in this area. Same thing goes for in class responses and homework. He also lets you use a cheat sheet on every exam!
Honestly the easiest psych class you can take at this school. You get a double-sided cheat sheet for every exam. There's no final. There's two makeup exams, and all exams are in class. Lots of SONA extra credit. Easy homework. Attendance counts though; he uses iClicker and reaction papers to check if you're there. He's also really nice and funny.
He makes it super easy for you to pass this class, easy A. Sometimes the lectures are a little dry but you don't need to go to all of them to pass.
John Bickford is the best psych professor at UMass. He's such a nice and funny guy and he really cares about his students and their learning. Tests are open note and theres no final because he doesn't believe in test anxiety. A lot of short 2-3 page papers but they are interesting and simple. Definitely a really good class and professor.
Bickford can be kind of dry, but overall he's a nice guy. He gives cheat sheets on his exams so you can't go wrong with him. You do have to read the textbook to do well on his exams.
Prof. Bickford is really nice and sweet, but lectures are boring. He skipped over important sections and wasted time on easy ones. But there are 4 open-note tests, and lots of easy and genuinely interesting homework assignments. There are extra credit opps on exams, bonus questions, and research studies. You will learn but only if you read!
Bickford is really a nice guy. His criteria and expectations are very clear. Class is not mandatory, but you are "graded" on how often you go. For example, he gives iClicker polls and reaction papers every once in a while, but you're allowed to miss a bunch of them (and of homework assignments) with no penalty. So many opportunities to get an A
Have accommodations through disability services? He doesn't care. Large class, always had to sit on the floor even during exams. He teaches a lot of students and has a lot of classes so he's hard to get in contact with and really doesn't want to be contacted, so you're on your own. A lot of work required outside of class, but the books online.
He likes to perform experiments that include the whole class every time, which helps prove the topic and give you something to remember.
Awesome professor, makes the class super interesting and fun. Tests are open note and gives plenty of extra credit. Two easy papers and one group project
Professor Bickford is a very straightforward guy. There were four exams, with the option of two make up exams to replace poor grades on the other exams, and all the exams were open note. As long as you fill out the study guide and have some idea of what's happening, you'll do fine.
Great teacher and easy class. You have retakes AND CHEATSHEETS! Took PSYCH100 with him and he's amazing and so I decided to take 360 with him. Would recommend and take another class with him. So much extra credit-- dont forget to to the "secret" question in the syllabus!!!!
He's by far my favorites psych professor here at umass. He has this cheat sheet policy where you can bring a 2 sided sheet of paper with you to each test. This helps a ton. Also he does a make up test policy where he will replace 2 of your lowest test grades with the 2 make up test grades so long as you did better. He's a fabulous teacher. So funny
He's so great! 4 exams and no final, can use a double sided cheat sheet for all of them (which can even be typed. If you need to take Psych 100 DEFINITELY take it with him. He's funny during lecture and takes time to really explain the concepts.
Bickford is a great guy! He makes it very clear how you'll be graded and gives you all the materials you need to do well. Lectures are a little dry sometimes, but you have to go for the reaction papers that are unannounced. The exams and writing assignments are very straightforward.
This class was an easy A & Bickford is a great professor too. He makes it clear how he will grade and allows for a lot missing class in the syllabus (e.g., assigning 12 reaction papers in class but only grades the top 8 so you're able to miss 4). His exams are also very fair and he allows you to have a double sided cheat sheet. Lots of extra credit
I would totally recommend this class. Psych 360 has by far been my favorite class ever. John Bickford's lectures are entertaining and the material is actually really interesting too. Make sure you go to class. You have 4 exams, 2 makeup exams, 3 papers, 6 randomly assigned in-class reaction papers, and tons of extra credit with the psych studies.
Professor Bickford makes it very easy to succeed. The material is interesting and you have plenty of opportunities to earn a good grade. Definitely recommend any class with Bickford
If you tend to procrastinate, don't take this class. He has a zero late work policy (even if it's due to illness, injury, etc.) and tells students not to email him in the case of personal matters. I got 95%+ on every exam and barely managed an A due to missing assignments when I was sick. Not a bad guy but still, something to keep in mind!
I attended less than half of the classes all semester and still got a B+. 4 tests are worth 50% of your grade, but he lets you have a cheat sheet so it's not too bad. Also extra credit opportunities. Definitely recommend this course as a gen ed/grade booster.
4 Exams allowed with a cheat sheet each. Homework is pretty easy and the lectures are interesting. Go to class for i clickers and response questions, they aren't hard.
AMAZING. FANTASTIC. WONDERFUL. I LOVE HIM. AMAZING CLASS. 10/10, WOULD TAKE AGAIN.
Bickford's classes are all amazing. Tests are all multiple choice and open note. If you don't do well on an exam, you'll have the option to make it up. There are a lot of assignments (in class and out), but none of them are too difficult, and as long as you follow all the guidelines (especially length), you'll get full credit.
If you need to fulfill a gen ed and want an easy A take this class. Bickford is a great professor. Not a lot of homework, and you only need to do a certain amount of reaction papers and iclicker questions. He allows double sided cheat sheets for every exam which makes the class a lot easier.
Honestly there is no reason to fail this class. There are so many opportunities for extra credit, his lectures are very lively, and only a certain amount of assignments need to be fulfilled. Come to lecture for iclicker and reflection papers, but there is a certain amount you can hit before you stop. Double sided cheat sheets & makeup exams!!
Prof. Bickford is a solid choice for a psych professor. He is very lenient with extra credit and doesn't usually assign a lot of homework. His tests are open note but even then they're not very hard. He really cares about his students and is very engaging throughout class. You don't need the text book much; just show up, do the HW and you'll pass.
If you read the textbook and take notes, you won't have to go to class and you'll be fine. He lets you have as many notes as you want for the exams. There is extra credit if you participate in psych studies in the psych lab on campus.
If you need to take Psych 100, take Bickford's class. Compared to my friends in other sections, I didn't have to do much studying at all. You can EASILY get an A if you do the minimum amount of work he requires-- which is not a lot. Lectures are relatively entertaining. Online text is easy and straightforward (and free).
He is an amazing professor I am taking two more classes with him next semester!
He is a super nice guy but he tends to ramble on in lecture. I love the content covered in this course but I think it could be presented in another way. He teaches very general and then tests very specific. I did not purchase the text book but I think if I did, the readings would be very helpful and I would learn more in his class.
This class was an easy A. There was a lot of homework but he dropped a lot of low grades. There were a TON of extra credit opportunities and you could basically bring up your grade by half a letter if you did them. The lectures were general while the test were very specific but if you read the online textbook you were fine. One exam was dropped.
Really great professor, easy class
Bickford is a really nice guy, it is VERY hard to get a bad grade because he grades fairly and your grade is based on a lot of different things, including extra credit. Lectures can drag but he really tries to make it interesting. Not necessary to go to every class to learn but he does have iClicker and little assignments so it's safe to show up
Bickford has very boring lectures- Class is mandatory but no one shows up- HOWEVER there are 8 "pop quizzes" that ask you to react to a video you watch in class- you can miss up to 3. Exams are difficult because of how much is on each exam BUT there is a cheat sheet (front and back typed) Homework about 2x a week - takes around 40 min v easy
Professor Bickford is the sweetest man ever. He has all the tests as open note, so you get to bring a cheat sheet plus all your notes from class. In addition to that, he has sporadic reaction papers which counts toward attendance since they're done during class. Plus you have an extra credit opportunity to do SONA studies for another 18 points
Professor Bickford really cares about making his classes enjoyable for his students. He understands the stress students are under, and he really just cares about teaching on topics he loves. Highly recommend taking any course you can with him. Cheat sheets for tests, allows room to miss a few homeworks & iclicker sessions, no final.
Bickford is one of the worst professors I've had during my 4 years at UMass. Busy work is the only work and tests are open note, so it's an easy A. However, Bickford is uninspiring and disorganized and rambles on and on during lecture. Pop quiz things that count as attendance are the only way he can get anyone to go to class. Pathetic.
The material is easy and his lectures are great and entertaining. Its almost impossible to not get an a in this class because he's so lenient and there is so much extra credit. You can have a cheat sheet on tests too, so you don't really have to study. I actually learned a lot in this class.
This was the easiest class I have ever taken. The professor wants you to enjoy the class so he purposely makes it easy. You can literally use your notes on the exams. There's no final, either. You have to try to fail this class.
The pop quizzes are really just opinions to questions he asks. You can only miss two, but if you miss more it's not that big of a deal. All lectures are posted so there's almost no need to go to class. The only thing to pay attention to are the studies he talks about, there are a lot of questions about them on exams so make sure you know them.
Open note exams, clear criteria for assignments, if you do the study guide and pay attention in class (and do the assignments) its very easy to get an A. He's funny, wants you to pass, and provides lots of opportunities to complete work at the students convenience. The projects are fairly fun too if you like being creative
Easy class. He gives you so many extra credit opportunities and allows cheat sheets/open notebooks for all exams. The assignments are short and easy and are mostly opinion based. I never bought the textbook and did fine on all the tests (4 in total with 2 optional makeup exams). Bickford is funny and tries to make the lectures interesting.
I don't understand how some people are honestly complaining that the class was too easy? Do you know how dumb ya'll sound? The man is funny, the content is interesting, and you have to be the biggest bum on the planet to not pass this class! It's like you idiots want to drown in homework and stress over exams
This class is by far one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. Tests are open note, you're graded on a lot of things, and the assignments are not bad. He just wants to see everyone succeed. I love this man
Bickford is my favorite professor in the psych department. If you do the assignments and give it a reasonable try you'll get a good grade. Take notes, because his tests are open note, so good notes from lectures will pretty much get you a good grade. His also a good lecturer, his lectures aren't boring at all.
Great guy that wants all of his students to do well. There is an online homework assignment due everyday that you have class but they do not take long, 30 minutes at most and help boost your grade. Gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Overall great class 10/10 would recommend.
John Bickford is a very fun and funny professor. 4 exams (all open note) and a couple projects he offers two make ups just incase. LOTS of opportunities for extra credit. Hes an awesome guy however I found the tests to be the downfall. You would think "Open note?? easy A!" but you aren't given too much time to do the exam making me feel rushed.
Lots of papers (4 2-3 page papers, 2 3-5 page papers), but are about interesting topics. 4 exams, but they are open note with two makeup exams. Try to take notes in class if you can, because there is not much on the slides he posts. Excessive opportunities for extra credit. Try to keep track of time because there are either papers or exams weekly!
Amazing professor. Gives you tons of free passes to miss stuff or drop a bad grade. Lectures were always interesting and the material stuck. Exams were open note but even without looking at notes, straightforward and easy. Tons of extra credit. Hard not to get an A in this class- it's literally set up so that you can get a good grade very easily
I liked everything but Bickford in my opinion was weirdly hard to talk to, he seemed to have an attitude or be uncomfortable by direct conversation after class. Other than that great class, I loved the way he lectured it was funny and also informative. SO MANY oppurtunities to get an A or a good grade. Woud recommend to take this class again.
Great seminar class with lots of interesting discussion. John leads it well but also knows when to back off and let the students take over.
Bickford is the best to take PSYCH 100 with. If you do all the required assignments you will get an A. There are also opportunities to get extra credit and he allows a cheat sheet for the exams!!
Easy and fun class, very discussion oriented. Don't take this class unless you are genuinely interested in the subject matter and open to talking about it. John is accessible and the TAs are helpful too. Assignments are straightforward. I got so much out of this class, genuinely life changing.
Make sure you get John if you're taking Psych 100. His lectures are engaging - while his speaking seems dry at first, he frequently sprinkles in ridiculous analogies and wicked jokes without changing his tone of voice. There's a lot of leeway with missing assignments and you get 2 chances for each exam. It'd be hard not to get an A in this course.
Easy grader on papers, many chances to get extra credit, allows a cheat sheet on exams. Class is easy but engaging, and Prof Bickford really cares about his students! I'd take every class with him if I could. Also textbook is free online if you google it.
Bickford is one of the most respected and amazing professors you are ever going to have for psychology. He is a very understanding man and approachable. You can literally pass without much of an effort. Don't miss those reaction papers though!
Bickford is the man. This class was pretty easy with 4 open note exams, two individual papers, one group paper and a few participation papers. If you look at the study guides before the exam you're fine. Attendance only natters for the participation papers (you can miss 2 out of 7)
I would take every class with him! He gives you a monster syllabus at the beginning that clearly defines his expectations and following them nets an A. Constantly gives extra credit opportunities and exams are simple double-sided cheat sheet to the exam. Lectures are standout and funny; you have to go for reaction paper + iClicker credit.
Bickford has been my favorite professor at Umass so far. There was never a lecture I was not laughing in. Exams are open note and pretty straightforward as long as you pay attention in class and take notes.
Lectures were funny and interesting as well as interactive. Homework was very clear and was all through an online textbook/ interactive learning system. Tests were fair and reasonable and matched up with the study guides. Best professor I've had here highly recommend
Very tough class to do poorly in. John is a great lecturer and gives ample opportunity for extra credit. Even if you are not a strong test taker, you're likely to do well in this course if you stay engaged.
Legitimately one of my favorite profs at UMass. He's so funny, tells relatable stories from his childhood, and is visibly passionate about the subject matter. He's very approachable, so if you wanted to chat with him about studies, grading, etc. he had no problem taking time to speak with students. Such a wonderful man
This is my second class with Prof. Bickford and I can say, without a doubt, that he is my favorite professor that I've had here. You can tell he cares about having his students succeed and actually take something away from the material assigned. The course load is a little heavy, yes, but is still a quality class that you can take and use in life.
Best teacher for Psych 100!
Homework may feel like too much work at times, but that is the easiest wayto study for his exams. He allows cheat sheets for all exams and makeup exams. Lots of different things factor into grade, with some important categories. In class is random attendance (part of grade). Fun lecturer and really enthusiastic about student success
Great guy. He explains things very well and often gets into his personal experiences which is pretty cool. His assignments are cake, he has make-up exams (takes your better score) and you get to use your notes, doesn't believe in finals, and half of his assignments are optional. He also gives A TON of extra credit (peep syllabus )
Professor Bickford is the most empathetic, kind, and funny prof ever. He schedules exams to be the weeks before midterm/final week so that you don't have to worry about his class on top of everything else. The class is very easy but I always attend class anyway because he's awesome. I've taken 3 classes with him and wish I could take more.
He is a very kind, sympathetic, and hilarious professor who explains things very well and makes sure that all the grades that go into the system and all of the assignments are very reasonable and he is open to talking about any issues that may happen. One of the best professors I've ever had
Bick was a great guy and great professor. Made the class interesting, yet the homework/quizzes were set up for you to learn and do well. Allowed to have one-page cheat sheet on test- He wants his students to succeed.
Professor Bickford was a great teacher and he offers a full page cheat sheet for every exam as well as opportunity to retake any exam no questions asked. His class is layed out to not accept any late assignments however, he only counts your best 4 assignments out of the 8 he would assign! Take this class, you wont regret it.
John Bickford is SUCH a great professor. He makes his lectures fun and interesting and is so easy with grading - he drops your lowest scores on in-class writing assignments and gives you the opportunity to miss a few iClickers if you're not in class. He knows his stuff and always wears great outfits! Lets you have cheat sheets on exams.
Great for PSYCH 100! Always has extra credit options. Attendance is sometimes mandatory so do not miss too many classes and buy iclicker! This class uses a very easy online textbook and that is what the homeworks and quizzes are taken on. Only 1 or 2 actual papers required in person I forget. He also allows cheat sheets for tests .. double sided!!
I love this man. I had him for psych 100 and knew I had to take his classes again if I got the chance. For psych 100, you get a page (front and back) to write notes on. For psych 360 its ALL open notes, you have to be missing brain cells to fail. His lectures lean on the more boring side but he is so charismatic you cant help but love the guy
Take psych 360 with John Bickford. Psych major or not, take his class. It was interesting, rewarding, engaging without being frustrating or discouraging, it's like the opposite of a weed-out class. He makes learning easy but effective, and is very encouraging. He offers lots of opportunities for extra credit, too.
My Favorite class my freshman year! His lectures are hilarious and the material was interesting. Lots of extra credit, I would recommend taking it
Awesome class, Bickford is an amazing teacher! Would take it again if I could. Lots of extra credit, lecture heavy, but notes are posted so you can access them
He is genuinely such a funny professor. His lectures are never boring and the hour and fifteen minutes will go by so quickly. I highly recommend taking his class. Great guy and great TA's.
Bickford was the best professor I have had at UMass. He makes it easy to do well grade-wise while being engaged in the course material. If you have a chance to take any class with Bickford, please do!!
Prof. Bickord is by far the best professor that I have had so far. He cares about each and every one of his students. He is the sweetest and most caring professor ever. Definitely take a class with him if you have the opportunity to. He makes his classes enjoyable and easy to learn. Tests are open notes. His outfits are also dope.
Funny guy
One of the best professors I've ever had. You don't need me to tell you, just read his other reviews, but he truly cares students and wants them to get an A in his class (even though literally every professor says that) and he gives you so many chances to boost your grade either by makeups or extra credit assignments. His tests are open note too!!!
Wouldn't want to take psychology with anyone else
John is the best professor I have ever had in my college career since being at UMass. He does make-up exams which can only help your grade. Homework is online which is in the textbook, but is easy to do. During the pandemic, there was a 5-6 paper due, but he gave students 100 & waived the paper so it wasn't required to do. Do the sona extra credit.
Easy assignments and exams. Cheatsheet to use on exam makes it an easy A. Great guy and lecturer. Cares for your grade and gives you lots of extra credit opportunities. Textbook is helpful when making exam cheatsheet but wouldn't say you need it for anything else. Engaging lectures twice a week. No sections. Homeworks easy and insightful.
This class is insanely easy and is almost difficult to get a bad grade in. The exams are pretty straightforward and are taken with cheatsheets, the 3 total papers are quick and easy to write, and the class itself is pretty actually interesting. Professor Bickford is an absolute OG and makes this class amazing. Just try to show up for inclass credit
Great professor, especially for an introductory class. He made the material engaging and it was never a drag to go to lecture. The class had four exams and allowed a cheat sheet.
Prof Bickford was great! For this class, he told you exactly what you needed to know for exams. Exams were clear and not confusing. He also drops a few assignments which was so helpful. Prof. Bickford was also my internship sponsor and he was extremely accommodating with that as well.
Professor Bickford is seriously the best professor I've ever had. Not only does he teach in a way that allows students to genuinely understand the material, he also makes his lectures fun and entertaining so you can't help but pay attention. If you have the chance to take Psych100, or any other class, with professor Bickford, do it.
Great professor, very engaging and an awesome guy
I absolutely love this professor and only wish I heard about him sooner as I am now done with school. He is caring, hilarious, makes the lectures interesting, and assigns really fun stuff, without it being too easy. He makes the material so fun to learn. A REAL gem, I respect him a lot.
Very funny and entertaining. Super personable even though this course was online. He was a very casual dude.
Jb was rad
I only put in an hour of work a week. The big paper that was the most work out of all our assignments? It was 4% of our grade. I literally just didn't do it and my letter grade didn't change. There is so much leeway in this class, ex. you only need to do 10/15 SmartBook assignments (which are graded for completion). Easy class. And open book exams.
I really liked this class, there are 4 exams and no final and he gives opportunities for extra credit, pretty easy A. John is a funny professor and makes the lectures enjoyable, I highly recommend taking this class.
John Bickford is one of the best professors at UMass and he really cares about his students. Gives many chances for extra credit as well as easy/creative assignments. An enjoyable and non stressful class. If you have a chance to take a class with him definitely take it!
Dr. Bickford is awesome, you definitely have to put the work in but he gives you a certain amount of assignments that you can miss with no penalty and without providing an excuse. Only one 5 page paper that is assigned 9 weeks in advance with clear guidelines. Exams(4) are very reasonable, not too difficult or too easy. No final. Great person too!
It's an easy gened if you're taking classes online. I didn't go to lectures and I learned nothing, but I got a good grade and had an easy time during this online semester, which is really all I was looking for.
Prof Bickford's lectures are really engaging and easy to follow and the workload is not too bad. Highly recommend taking this class if you're interested in psych or looking for a good gen ed
! Good/Bad depending on which of his classes you take. Had him my first semester of freshmen year. What a blast. Lecture heavy and make sure to show up because there are many opportunities for extra credit. Funny with great fashion choices. There is a lot of work involved, but it is all so interesting that it is worth the time to get the easy A.
If you're looking for an easy class with very little workload, this is the class/professor for you. The textbook is online and the answers to the homework, tests, and quizzes are all on quizlet. His pre-recorded lecture videos are all on youtube and aren't mandatory. Just make sure you turn everything in on time because there's no second chances
The best professor I have ever learned from. Bickford cares about his students, gives hilarious lectures, and wants to help you. I wish I could take his class again and again.
Super great class, super great professor. There is a lot of assignments, but they're all really easy. His lectures are funny and informative, all test answers can be found in the textbook or in his lectures. You can't turn in anything late, but you get told about everything in advance and can miss some without penalty, very reasonable.
Really interesting class, and he wants students to succeed
He is such a good professor. I love him. He is so funny, the exams are based on lectures and not that difficult, there are so many extra credit options, he tells stories that relate to the content, and you only have to do 4/6 essays. The essays are actually fun because they're about you and your personality or your friends. Such an interesting clas
Prof. Bickford is a really great guy. I enjoyed the class and I found the material to be pretty interesting. Each lecture discusses a different personality theorist. There is quite a bit of writing (4/6 2-page papers, one 4-5 page paper and another 4-5 page paper (or you can make a collage) and 4 exams. He offers a lot of extra credit!
If you get the chance to take a class with Bickford, do it! I have had him for two classes now: Psych 100 and 370. He is engaging, funny, and gives realistic examples to help you understand the material. He provides so many opportunities to make up exams or complete extra credit. Bickford genuinely cares about your success. Take this class!
He's good!
Great guy, funny and lively each class. Homework's simple but you can have up to 3 assignments per week so it's important to keep track of deadlines. Exams are pretty simple and there are plenty of chances for you to make up bad exam/homework/other assignment grades. Doesn't expect a lot out of his students and understands we have other classes.
Bickford is the best, especially in Psych 391ZZ. He's very down to earth, reasonable, and if you participate, you'll be fine. He assigns reaction papers to the readings, which just means you can rant about what you think of them. One of the best professors I've had at UMass.
He is literally the best professor. The homework is literally just completion and some other things. There is a lot of work but it's not hard. I will definitely try to take him again
Easy A or A- as long as you do all the work. You only need to go to half of the classes to get full credit. LOTS of extra credit :). However, you NEED to do at least half of the assignments which he will not remind you to do and are not extendable. HW assignments can be 4ish a week but are short and easy. Exams not too hard and lecturesengaging
Professor Bickford is easily my favorite professor. As long as you go to lectures the tests will be really straightforward, and they're open note so just pay attention in class. A few assignments throughout the semester but they're really not bad at all. He's really funny and just overall a caring guy, I definitely recommend taking his classes.
Such a kind-hearted guy, really just wants you to do well and understands things like testing anxiety. His lectures kind of drag on when he goes off topic but they are helpful. Read the textbook before exams and take detailed notes. Lots of grades other than exams. Learning modules aren't bad, he includes engaging activities in class.
Professor Bickford was my favorite prof this semester. Hilarious lectures, so lenient, easy work. There is a lot of reading but the homework is merely completion-based. 10/10 would recommend.
I abosolutely love Bickford. He is so funny. His lectures can drag every once in a while, but he switches things up with videos and in-class one page activities. Total of 4 exams, all of which you can use a cheat sheet for. There's one big paper, but it is pretty simple. He also gives lot of opportunities for extra credit.
Great professor. If you go to class and pay attention you'll be fine. A lot of busy work but gotta do it because it makes your grade. Exams are fine, one paper for the whole semester that is totally doable if you plan ahead.
Such a great professor. There's a lot of outside work that he doesn't remind you of often, but if you keep track of deadlines you'll be fine since they're all short. There's one long paper but it's not hard to do and you have the entire semester. You get cheat sheets for exams and there's makeup exams too. Would take again in a heartbeat!
very funny guy, keeps students engaged during class. material is interesting. one essay for the whole semester. we did have online hw weekly & a lot of tests but he gave opportunities for a makeup exam to do better. cares for his students. not really accessible after class, his assistant and TAs are.
Professor Bickford is easily the best professor I've had. He cares about his students and truly wants them to pass. He has clear grading criteria and chances to make up poor grades. You definitely have to read the book for tests, but you're also allowed a note sheet. Easy A if you put in the effort.
One of the most easiest classes you can take. You will get an A as long as you do the bare minimum. He has a clear grading criteria and gives you a lot of opportunities to make up any work you had missed or didn't do too well on. Exams were very straight forward but sometimes wasn't in the lectures. He has make-up exams if you didn't do well.
I love John he's my favorite professor this semester by far. Super easy gen ed, super understanding, you can miss up to a third of homework assignments, no final, and can use cheat sheets on the four exams. He's hilarious and keeps the class engaged. You can tell he really cares about his students too. 10/10 recommend
Fun and chill psych class. Open note for psych 100 and 360 (the ones I have taken). Funny guy with clear grading requirements. I would recommend this class.
such an easy gen ed, if you put in minimal effort you will do well. the exam averages are like B's but I have gotten over a 100 on all of them bc he scales
Literally the best professor I have ever had at UMass. He was the reason I declared a minor in psych, as I took this class for a gen ed my junior year. He is hysterical, very easy to follow, gives a bunch of extra credit, and the homework and tests are pretty straightforward. I will be taking another class with him in the fall.
Professor Bickford was probably the best professor I've ever had in UMass. Had pysch 100 & 360 with him, got 2 As. Put some effort in coursework and you get good grade. Prof. Bickford allows a cheat sheet for each exam, so it shouldnt be a big problem to get 90%+ in exams. Very easy to communicate with, trust me he wants you to enjoy the course.
Favorite professor. Actually makes you interested in what he is teaching. There are tests but you can bring a one page cheat sheet. Uses I clicker and in class assignments to take attendance but not everyday. Homework is all online and can be completed quickly.
Professor Bickford is great. He is hilarious and by far one of my favorite professors. His lectures are really interesting and easy to understand. His tests are also really easy and all open note. Highly recommend taking any courses with him as I loved being in his class.
I have taken two of Bickford's classes and I can honestly say that he is one of my favorite professors! He is super kind and funny & makes his 75-minute lectures engaging. You can skim the readings from the textbook and be fine! He allows you to bring in a cheat sheet for exams and there's no final. Highly recommend taking this class.
I loved Bickford! His attendance wasn't mandatory but over the course of the semester he'd do little reaction papers that only people attending class could do, they were worth like 10% of your grade. I attended almost every lecture because he was so passionate about what he talked about. Exams/papers had clear outlines and were easy if you studied!
Now, I took this class because I was mislead by a lot of students on ratemyprofessor that this was the EASIEST CLASS. NOW, it's only easy of you ACTUALLY LIKE SCIENCE. I hate science and thought this would talk about how people act and why they act that way but it was all axons and dendrons. If you are NOT science inclines forget this class.
Professor Bickford is awesome! He presents material in a relatable and relevant way. He's funny, his lectures and projects are fun. The class structure creative/applicable, it's NOT read, digest, regurgitate. The tests are the same, take good notes and be ready to apply what you've learned.
Best professor ever!! Bickford is hilarious and entertaining during lectures. You will need to take lots of notes but you do get a cheat sheet for each exam which are very helpful. There isn't a ton of work assigned considering you only have to do 2/3 of the textbook work. There is also no final for this course! Easiest A ever:)
He allows retakes on exams and offers many opportunities to redeem/help grades
Professor Bickford made his lectures enjoyable due to his humor and engagement with students. There are four in person exams that are a big portion of your grade, but you get a full size paper cheat sheet and there are makeup exams as well. Homework is very easy, would definitely recommend taking psych 100 with him!
Professor Bickford was one of my favorite professors ever. He truly cares about teaching and does so in a way that makes sense. The class can seem scary at first but after you get into the groove, it's as easy as a college course can be. The material is super engaging and you can apply your learning in the 1 course self-analysis paper.
He's a great lecturer and offers a two page cheat sheet on every test. There's no final. Of all his assignments you're allowed to miss a certain number which is helpful. IClicker is needed. Read the textbook as he includes questions on the tests that aren't on the study guide. He does everything to get you to succeed, you just have to put in work.
great class
Great class!! Not only is he funny but exams are open note and the textbook is available online for free! four exams, ( 2 makeup exams are implemented to improve grades) only need to complete 2 out of 3 projects, four out of 6 hw assignments, and four out of eight in-class writings. Multiple opportunities for extra credit
Truly this man is one of the best professors I've ever had. For PSYCH 391LB, it's discussion-based, and the only assignments are eight separate Reaction Papers, due at various points throughout the semester. All you have to do is show up, participate, do the RPs, and you're set. I always looked forward to this class this past semester.
I had Bickford for psych100 and it was awesome. He was so funny and made the lectures super interesting. There are four non-cumulative exams and one paper. The exams are all multiple choice and he lets you have a cheat sheet. Overall, Bickford is the best professor I've had. I loved this class and would recommend it to anyone.
Great professor. His lectures are entertaining. 4 exams no final and you can bring a cheat sheet. Go over book for topics but some questions weren't on exam review. Either way, this class is an easy A and makes it very very interesting. He sounds like Bill Burr which is a plus. 5 page paper wasn't bad, just make sure you get 4 different topics in.
John is such an icon! His lectures were always engaging, and his accent and personality made it extra entertaining. You can miss a lot of assignments and it won't count against your grade. Exams are easy and you are allowed a cheat sheet for each one. As long as you put in a little bit of effort, you should do fine in this class. Take this course!
Professor Bickford was so funny and made lectures so interesting. He was very understanding, open note exams and the perfect amount of work
total jerk easy class
Bickford is an amazing guy. I've taken him for multiple years throughout my 4 years at UMass. He cares so so much about his students, taking time to compliment them before giving feedback or furthering the conversation. Any class you can take with him is a good time.
I was shocked by Bickfords 3.9 rating. He is the best Professor I've taken here. Makeup exams, easy-to-follow lectures, and real-world examples that he uses are helpful. Not to mention, he gets you the exams back in ONLY a few hours. Now, if you want to see a professor that deserves the 3's, it would be Brian Lickel.
amazing and entertaining, rating should be a 5.0 no question. Psych 100 is great if you need and extra course
This class is just great, Bickford is amazing. Exams are open notes, make-up exams allow grades to be improved. Every now and then there are "reaction papers" which are pretty much class participation grades. A couple of individual writing assignments. Just take this class!
love his lectures. he is very engaging. exams are open notes and has makeup exams throughout the semester to improve grades if needed. this class is very easy and interesting! highly recommend
John is one of those teachers who could talk for hours if they were allowed to but he is such a caring and funny guy. He understands that learning is about being engaged and not about being assigned busy work. Such a great lecturer and person
No weekly homework, multiple opportunities to do assignments throughout the semester. Usually you will need to do 2/6 or 4/8 of a class requirement, so if something comes up you will always have another chance to make it up. Open note exams, lectures are good but not always interesting. he's funny
Prof Bickford does not care about the wellbeing of his students and is extremely rude. He does not allow extensions for any reason, does not understand accommodations, and does not respond to any emails ever. If you can, take psych 100 with Tammy instead.
super interesting class when he teaches it, tons of extra credit through iclicker, unlimited open notes for exams. don't buy the textbook there's a pdf online, make sure you read the chapters and take notes on the definitions for the exams because some of them will be on there even if it's not on the study guide
Prof Bickford is such a great guy! There were 4 exams, and for every exam, you could bring whatever notes you wanted (besides the book) as long as they were printed out. He got the grades back for exams in like 3 hours tops and there are also makeup exams if you want to improve your grades. He's overall a funny, nice guy and his class is so easy!!!
Iclicker heavy course. Really easy, there's only one big paper but it's pretty easy. There's 5 reaction papers that are graded in class and 10 iclicker questions. 4 exams and he allows a cheat sheet. SONA credits are necessary. All work is on Connect.
If you want to take psych 100, take it with this professor. He was funny and passionate, this class was overall my favorite. Makeup exams were offered if you aren't satisfied with your grade, he lets you bring a cheat sheet in to every exam. Not too many homework assignments.
Great professor who takes the time to teach students the curriculum while making it fun.
Hilarious guy I love him. Lectures are actually interesting and fun. Attendance not always mandatory but heavily recommended and take notes if you wanna do good on exams. He gives so many extra credit opportunities and make-up exams if you don't do good. Lots of textbook reading but not too bad. 10/10 would reccomend esp if you're a psych major!!
Awesome teacher
John is a great professor. I think his style of teaching is incredibly good and his lectures are interactive and interesting. In Psych 100 there is a 6-page paper you have to write, but he informs you of it the FIRST week of classes so you have more than enough time to do it. Overall I have learned a lot from this class, and I would take it again.
John is such an amazing professor. The lectures are always interesting and he always cracks some good jokes. Each exam can have a double-sided cheat sheet and there's no final. It's an easy class to get through and it's so much fun. If you're taking psych 100, take it with John.
Professor Bickford is a nice guy but this class if you are not interested in psychology is extremely boring. The exams are kinda difficult if you do not fully understand the concepts but you are allowed a two page reference sheet every exam so you should be fine if you put enough information. But overall a very easy class tons of extra credit.
Professor Bickford is an amazing professor. He is hilarious and engaging, and explains the concepts in depth during lectures. He doesn't give finals for Psych 100, but rather 4 non-cumulative tests which you can use notesheets for which is great. I would highly recommend taking Psych 100 with him.
Super easy class, learned a lot. Bickford is super kind and understanding. Love him. There's lots of options for assignments but you don't have to do all of them, 4/8 in class reaction papers, 2/6 individual papers, 1/4 grp projects. Exams are multiple choice, no final, 2 makeup exams that replace EITHER OR BOTH worse prev. exams.
I took this class as a freshmen due to it being a major requirement. John's personality is extremely vibrant. I like how in his lectures sometimes it's mostly him talking and other times it is us watching videos. I will say there is a lot of homework, deadlines come extremely fast, so it is really easy to fall behind. You need to really keep up
Very entertaining lecturer. Attendance is mandatory in order to get full credit. A lot of homework and it piles on fast, but if you keep up you will be fine. Take advantage of every extra credit opportunity you get; it took my grade from a B to a A+. However, not very accessible.
Great professor w vibrant personality. Strict deadlines but VERY lenient ahead of time- ex. only paper was assigned 2.5 mo in advance. Only need 10 iclicker cred. and 5/9 in-class assignments for full attendance. Extra credit+no final+4 exams+2 makeup exams that grade-replace a past exam if your score improved. Engaging lectures; fair amounts of HW
Professor Bickford is an amazing prof. Psych100 itself is a pretty light course but he makes it so much easier. His lectures and slides are very thorough and well-explained. He also has a good sense of humor and gives plenty of reminders for upcoming deadlines on exams and papers. Overall solid prof.
John Bickford is an amazing professor! He's hilarious and still does a great job teaching the material while also making the lectures engaging. He gives opportunities for extra-credit points and allows a cheat sheet for each exam. The course is super easy and interesting, I highly recommend it!
Extra credit opportunities with iClicker and reaction papers sometimes had extra credit. There are test make-ups, which the better score is always taken, so there's no harm. Very funny and gives good lectures, the echo360 videos suck though (the room's recording is just bad), so it's better to attend class in person. Overall one of the best prof.
I can't stress enough how much I love John's class. Any class you take with him will easily be your favorite. He's such a bright and vibrant person who cares deeply about his students. The actual class is very stress-free as you have many extra credit & makeup opportunities & open note exams. I will definitely be taking many more classes with him!
John's lectures are the best. I took Psych 100 for a gen ed credit, and it ended up being my favorite class. His lectures are so informational and entertaining. He is very knowledgeable and is very easy to learn from. Favorite professor I have had so far.
He always shows up in the best outfits. Very engaging proff for a class of 300 students. "RP" are given spontaneously and you need to complete 9/13, so attendance isn't necessarily mandatory but I would go because he's so fun. Can bring cheat sheet for tests. 1 6-page essay (10 weeks to complete) and online textbook assignments that are tedious.
John is hilarious, engaging, intelligent, and insightful. I adore him. Exams open-note, a few papers, in-class assignments that you can miss half off, genuinely one of the best profs I've ever had. Love him so much. There's a textbook I never touched, not necessary.
He is honestly an amazing person. I feel like I am getting life advice every time I listen to him talk. Amazing man!
Genuinely the most touching professor I have ever had. He is such a good man and an incredible professor. I think we have a textbook but I've never read it I don't think you need to. Tests have cheat sheets/you can bring your notes. Class was not hard, and he is AMAZING. Inspired me so much as a person. Also the class content was really interesting
Professor Bickford is a great professor especially for this course. His lectures are definitely worth going to and it is a manageable workload. He provides extra credit opportunities and sets his grading criteria well and up front. Could not say enough good things about him and this course.
Im confused how he does not have a 5/5. This was my second course taken with him and I will jump on any opportunity to take a class with him in the future. His lectures are so engaging and you can miss half without penaltyHis projects are genuinely fun and not time consuming. Exams are open note and study guides are online! Incredible class and guy
Prof Bickford is amazing! He gives many easy extra credit opportunities (Spring 2024)! For exams, you have 4 midterms! If you do bad on them, no worries as he has makeup exams! No final in class! For assignments, you only have to do a certain amount (not all), and the same for papers that are given in class!
He's really funny, and extremely real to students. His expectations are really clear, just make sure you do all the homework and all the extra credit. He takes no late work. Even though he posts the slides online, make sure you go to class because he does pop quizzes in class that you can't make up called "reaction papers"
Prof Bickford's PSCYH100 class is a great option - lots of extra credit, manageable workload, and engaging lectures. Definitely worth attending, and unstuckstudy ai can help with exam prep. Overall, a solid class that's not too difficult.
This guy rocks. Cheat sheets, great lectures, no attendance.
Super funny guy, lectures are great. Gives LOTS of extra credit opportunities and allows cheat sheets on all exams.
hands down the BEST professor i've had here so far. every time i left his lectures i felt as if i had actually learned something and the way he teaches and explains things actually makes sense to me. he is so relatable and funny and has the best fashion sense. if you can PLEASE choose him as your professor
exams are in person but are open note so just remember to study with textbooks because that helps so much! only have to do 4 out of the 6 short papers. really great and funny guy!
He might just be the most relatable and humorous professor I had. His lectures were very engaging and I learned something every time I left. He allows a cheat sheet for every exam, and you should do great as long as you complete most of the online homework. I would totally recommend taking Psych 100 with him!
Bickford was easily my favorite teacher. His lectures were fun to attend even though they weren't mandatory. You have to complete 6 reaction papers in class, there are 4 midterms (no final) and you get a cheat sheet for all of them- pretty easy all multiple choice. The textbook assignments were quick, and helped to learn the material!
Loveeeeee himmmmm
He was cool
Super sweet guy, lectures are bare bones but the content is there. Worth taking his class for his fits alone. The tests were open note and thus extremely easy.
Attend the lectures and this class will be the easiest one you can take, Prof. Bickford is hilarious, and stylish! He offers many opportunities for extra credit, in class, online, and even in the exam. Even though attendance to lectures isn't mandatory he hands out random in-class papers which if you aren't there for can affect your grade.
Best teacher ever. Makes class both easy and interesting. Actually cares about his students and wants you to do well. Definitely recommend. Best teacher you could ask for.
Dr. Bickford is a great professor, especially for Psych 100! The assignments are simple and the textbook is online. Unfortunately, they do make you pay for the McGraw Hill textbook but it helps to really understand and remember the information. Overall, a great professor, especially for PSYCH 100.
he was awesome. attendance wasn't mandatory after you finish reaction papers. records on echo 360 double sided cheat sheet for tests, easy questions that arent meant to trick you. keeps you engages in the lectures bc he has a sense of humor. doesnt believe in finals so we dont have one. take his psych 100 class over the other professors
Prof. Bickford made Social Psych very enjoyable! While lectures could get a little rambly, he would try to incorporate jokes and videos to split it up. Tests are very easy and cheat sheets are allowed. Truly a professor that gives you plenty of chances to succeed in the class and learn the material.
Bickford is by far the funniest professor I've ever had. He makes lectures super super fun and always participates with the class. He gives so many extra credit options and the work is not hard at all as long as you actually do it.
The easiest class I've ever taken at UMass. Just go to lectures, take notes, and make sure to go through study guide before exam. Exams are open notes, exam makeups available, optional final, multiple opportunities to do assignments incase you missed a couple. In class reaction papers-you have to do 4 out of 8. Textbook not needed.
Had him for Psych 100, and now Psych 360, Bickford is the best. 360 is very easy if you put the work in Attendance is not mandatory, but you have to complete 4 of 8 in class assignments. Very straightforward with what content he wants you to know, makeup opportunities for all exams. Very fun lectures, really invested in student success.
Professor Bickford had a clear syllabus and structure which I found helpful. There were many easy assignment to gets credit for. He also offered chances for extra credit. Tests are in person, on paper, but you get a double sided cheat cheat. He is a little odd but its an easy course.
A very easy class. He randomly takes attendance and you have to be there about half of the time he takes it for full credit. Make sure to go to classes before and after exams, as well as during the last week of class. Do SONA credits ahead of time, its not worth procrastinating.
Prof Bickford in short was a respectable gentleman all semester!
just don't take his classes. he isn't easy.
He is a very caring and funny professor. He offers retakes and occasionally emails to reward good work. While some tests were challenging, success comes from reviewing notes, slides, and readings. I would definitely take this class again and recommend that students be resilient!
Super easy class. Theres a ton of credit for participation and the tests are really easy cause you get to use a cheat sheet for them. Highly recommended.
He's very nice and funny, but his lectures are painfully boring. He mostly reads off the slides and there isn't much interaction. For some people that works, but I prefer an interactive class. I had to teach myself most of the course, which sucked. I wouldn't take him again because his teaching style doesn't match how I learn. But overall nice guy
Overall good class. Lectures were a bit boring but he in general is an interesting person. Occasionally funny. Fits ate. If you actually do the work it's impossible to fail.
This teacher was truly inspirational. His lectures are TED Talk worthy, and I recommend attending. Uploads online and disability friendly. Grades 2/3 short project, 3 open-note exams, 4/6 LM essays, and 4/8 in-class reaction papers. He dresses flamboyantly and has a Boston accent. Quite a character. I'll be kissing up to his for grad school essay.
Such an amazing professor who really solidified my decision to switch to a psych major. Hilarious, the best Boston accent, and fits. You could not fail this course if you tried. He gives you numerous reminders about papers, SONA credits, and assignments due. As long as you do them, you'll pass. Also, go to the lectures, they're amazing!!
You can make a double-sided cheat sheet for every test and get a study guide. All tests are multiple choice. Attendance isn't required, but he'll randomly give writing assignments (you can miss up to 4). He's funny and engaging, and make-up tests allow two double-sided cheat sheets. No lab. Online homework and extra credit. Easiest class ever.
Amazing professor. He is so understanding of students. It is an easy A. Exams are easy and you get a cheat sheet. Only have to do a few homework assignments.
Literally THE BEST professor ever. Does have some weird ways of explaining things; however, THIS IS THE BEST CLASS EVER!! I absolutely LOVE Professor Bickford and would LOVE to TA for him. Also P.S. he's very supportive of LGBTQ+ people, if that's important to you. (He does not mention LGBTQ+ topics in this class sadly)
this class was super enjoyable, he is a very funny professor and he loves real life examples. His exams were easy, and theres makeups which helps a lot. I highly recommend him for psych 100!!
John is a good professor! I honestly did not do great on the exams, but still got an A because everything else is graded leniently. Lectures were good, but a bit boring at times. I just did not like that the exams were 25 questions each, so you can get no more than 2 questions wrong in order to get an A. Everything else is very simple and easy.
The most important part of class is textbook reading— lectures often feel like review, but have certain interactive elements I enjoy. There are also so many opportunities to get extra credit/ improve your grades. The only “challenges” would be completing your essay and getting SONA credits, but if you start early, it should go smoothly.
You need to roughly attend 5/9 of the lectures (randomly selected). He's genuinely the most forgiving professor I've had. You can take make up exams (mcq) just to improve your score. The class is pretty easy, and his lectures are fun, I enjoyed listening to his lectures even though I could probably get away with looking on my phone.
