He was not bad at all. He was actually the easiest instructor I have had in Chemistry so far. He gives you practice problems and the tests are just the same so if you work through the examples there is no way you cannot pass the class.
too caught up with his self to even teach the class.
He was unclear of his expectations...sometimes he would look at you like you were dumb when you ask him a question, but the class is EASY and all in all, he's a pretty nice guy
This guy's class is easy!
He's a pretty funny guy, he's pretty helpful, but tries to help you figure things out on your own, rather than him working something out FOR you...easy tests
Nice guy, but be careful with his test. They seem easy, but they have lots of trick questions.
Talked about everything at times but Chemistry. Would not let you work in groups and appeared that he did care if you passed or failed.
I am not a fan!
Easy exams, and easy A. However, void him if you can. You won't learn anything from him. When there is a lab, he goes and plays computer rather than helping students.
This class was hard for the sheer fact that the professor wasn't very helpful by giving straight forward, clear, answers to questions that students had. Class was also prety boring and sometimes hard to follow and keep up.
Mannnnnn i'm telling you if u want to get A in Chemistry, this is the perfect teacher for u. Test are so easy and u will have so much funnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!! very nice teacherrrrrrr. some people hate him but he is nice teacher in opinion.
Terrible professor--He's got the lectures memorized so he rushes through everything, ridicules you and rolls his eyes when you ask questions. Treats the students with total disrespect and clearly has no social skills!!
Total Jerk! Rude, Condescending, Arrogant, doesn't seem to care about his students. He seems to see class as an exercise for his own amusement and enjoys confusing students in the process. Cannont answer questions from students without extraneous material.
eventhough he is arrogant, and when i ask him question answer with question, but to be honest he is good teacher, some students wants the teacher to teach them every thing from a to z, ppl this is not h.s , you have sometimes to figure it on your own. anyway his tests is so easy, and any student who fail in his class should not be in the school.
Explains things well, but moves kind of fast. Can be a little overbearing and sometimes downright rude, but I think he really wants you to learn the material. I think when it comes down to it he is a nice guy, he just lacks social skills(I think he knows it too). You will learn the material in his class, even if you hate him.
Seems like he thinks just because he knows the material, you should know it too. During labs he usually doesn't leave the computer (playing solitare). Pretty rude about things and lacked social skills. Moves very fast and it was hard to ask questions because you couldn't get a straight answer.
I don't understand why people don't like BLAHA. He is the best teacher i have ever had in Chemistry. i agreed that sometime he is jerk but i also agreed that he gives u full points for all the work u do in the class and lab very easily. if u just show up in the LAB, u get 10 out of 10,but ya if u not good at CHEM, do not take this teacher.
he was not helpful at all, neither in class nor in lab
WHAT A JERK! The rudest professor I've ever encountered. Such an attitude and not helpfull at all. He's just bitter because he thinks he's a genius but he's stuck in Comm. College. You're not even good enough for that, BLA-HA!!
This guy is so rude . he also talks alot about nasty stuff like pooping
cool dude. knows lot of**** about chemistry.
I spent 2 1/2 years at CCSC, graduated this quarter (Fall 2006) with an A.S. Blaha was by far the WORST teacher I have ever had including high school, college, and grade school.
While he is semi-intelligent and seems to really know the material, he really is very rude and condescending to EVERYONE. Even reasonable questions are met with ridicule, which does NOT make for a good teacher. Good teachers should inspire one to cherish the subject. Blaha makes one not want to even attend class. Best to avoid him.
-if you want pass 171 take this guy... I only showed in the class for test only and I had old labs from my friend and turned everything at the end of the quarter and I passed with B. Tests are ok but disregard others ratings and take this guy... you will pass easily
Brilliant man, bad teacher...i love chem but he doesnt know how to make me love it more, he just confused me
Even though most students did not like this professor, I think he is a good teacher. It takes some time getting used to him. He is not the kind that would spoon feed his students, but he is a very easy grader. He wrote me one of the best letters of recommendation. I was surprised that he could write like that. People just surprise you.
I dont know If I want to drop his class or not. This class is 99% busy work and is not friendly to those students who are working and have families. The worst part is that All the busy work you HAVE to do, does NOT help prepare for the tests nor is it worth many points. The tests aren't that hard but if you have a ?...ASK SOME 1 else
This man is a very easy grader, excellent lecturer and is very efficent at geting all work back to you. On the other hand he is worthless at giving help and does have a condecending attitude. I would recommend him myself; if you can ignore his attitude, and learn to find help elsewhere, this class is easy to pass.
I didnt like blaha, I compared class tests labs and homework with other teachers and his was as hard or harder. Also we did 3Xs the amount of work than other classes. His "busy work" doesn't help out with the tests AT ALL! He makes fun of his students and WILL NOT HELP OUT WITH SIMPLE QUESTIONS! If you really BEG he might help...
I had Blaha for 171&172. If you do labs and homework you will get a B. just dont ask him questions you will do better finding it on your own. labs are easy you pretty much get 100% just for showing up. the papers i dont think he even reads them just marks and A and goes on to the next.
Easy to get left behind during a class lecture. His response to questions are hard to comprehend sometimes. Motivates students by telling them he won't see many of them at the end of the quarter, which doesn't seem to bother him or motivate him to make things easier to understand. If you don't remember much from chemistry in high school do not pick Blaha.
he is a good teacehr he knows what he is talking about
This professor is a very easy grader. I all my labs, the ARIS assignments, and c in all the tests, but I got a B. He dosent help you at all, no attendence required for lectures which are useless anyway. You can show up on for the labs and tests. You would hate him but he is an easy grader...your choice.
I hated him at first, but I didn't mind him by the end. Rude and condescending when you ask questions, but it's mainly to get you to think. If you make the effort, he's willing to help you. Tests were challenging, but you can easily get full credit on the rest (ARIS exercises, labs, paper). He does expect you to remember 171-172.
the worse teacher ever in columbus state. please run away for the sake of your GPA
I would not recommend him. Labs and online quizes are the only good part about his class. If you like to ask questions he will make you feel stupid every time. Lectures drag on, not very helpful.
This teacher is not good. You would be better off to look up your questions rather than ask him. He is extremely rude and is not helpful at all. He doesn't use the book and doesn't take notes. He is also very confusing, Do Not Take Him. The only thing to save your grade is Aris and labs.
Just about every comment on here are true. IF YOU DON'T LIKE TO READ BOOKS, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! It's probably better to take this class online rather than to come his class. Unless you like to read the text book, this guy isn't for you. You will die. His tests are hard as eff. 20 questions, 5 points each. Doesn't give partial credit. AHHHHHHH!!!
If you read the book and show up to class you will do well. If you have aquestion he will help until you get it. He will not spoon feed you the information. If he tell you to memorize something , do it. If you put the effort in you will get the grade and you will actually learn how to use the material.
Blaha is good.He DOES give partial credit on exams. He gives all-or-none credit for lab and the paper. And you can keep turning them in until it is correct. He could be more receptive when you have it a question, but he wants you to think about it,and -OH MY GOSH- UNDERSTAND the answer and what you are asking.I would recommend. He responds to emails.
Lectures are worthless except for 10 minutes because he rambles useless crap and repeats the same dumb jokes. Comes unprepared and doesn't follow the book, even though the book (CHANG) is actually pretty good. If you want to feel like an adult and not a child take from someone else.
Please do not take this man class if you do not understand chemistry. I am a chemistry major but his class was useless. He also do not help you in lab. You are on your own. I got an A but just because I love chemistry and I teach myself. RUN RUN RUN from him if you do not want to hurt your GPA
Blaha is a good professor. He isnt completely clear in his lectures but as long as you read the book you will do fine. I rarely paid attention during lectures and I still got a B in the class. Do the ARIS and do the practice problems and you will do fine.
Blaha is decent. If you like, understand chemistry, he's your guy. If it's not your area, this is a pretty difficult class, and he might not be ideal - but not the worst. I'd say he is middle of the road. He might not come off as receptive to questions - but he is. He simply wants you to think, and if you are sincerly trying to learn, he will help.
the worst teacher i have ever had. He is extreamly disrespectful, answers your question with a question. you would be better of not asking him a question. his tests are very hard. never helps inlab. He seems like he doesn't want to teach at all, like he is beeing force to teach. RUN PEOPLE RUN DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY!!!!!!!!
Dr. Blaha is a good professor. He is willing to assist you duritng his office hours. If you read the book his lectures are pretty clear. He is a gently giant really but no push over. Most comments are that he is degrading, I don't think so. He just wants you to think critically and be engaged in your studies. More for his style than against it.
Blaha is a very bad teacher who not only refuses to help you, he will openly mock you. His job is to teach you, but he spends every class telling stupid stories and talking about things other than the subject matter. He expects you to learn everything from the book and his lectures are completely useless. It is too bad he still has a job.
He's a good teacher, but he's more suited to teach upper-level or graduate chemistry classes. He moves through material very fast and if you have a question about anything, his answer is usually in the form of a question. His requirements are straightforward though, and his tests have no suprises. He's not a bad teacher, he could be better though.
The only positive I can say about Prof. Blaha is that his tests are not difficult and you receive easy points by doing the exercises online. I taught this class this to myself & did receive an A. He was not clear & not helpful when asking questions in class. He comes across very condensing which translates to an unhealthy learning environment.
Worst professor I've ever had. Did not post grades to the class i had to look up my transcript to even find my grade. Unwillingness to answer questions. If you didn't understand something a general response is, " what do you mean you don't understand this? this stuff is easy". Do not take his class if you have a choice, You will regret it. Bad prof
Just a jerk to everyone really. Form a study group and know the book inside and out because he doesn't teach. Oh his tests are 20 multiple choice questions worth 100 pts total. But if you know the book and do the aris exercises and labs you should atleast get a B.
He his an awesome teacher, he makes you learn when you ask him a question, he makes you answer the question so to get a better understanding and that is what every teacher's motto should be aspiring student to want to learn and stay in class
You'll hate him but pass his class. Really exceedingly rude and unforgiving towards the ESL students, not conducive to learning at all. Thinks he knows everything, is bad at helping you learn and really doesn't seem to care if you do or not. Don't take this class unless you can help yourself and resist raging at this guy.
He is a great teacher! He WILL NOT give you the answer, he wants you to think. Make sure you go to class and do the labs and you will do fine. I wish I could take him again.
He thinks he knows everything and when you ask him something he will ask something back. His tests are not too bad but you will need to study from the book a lot because he doesn't cover everything. I passed with an A but only because i knew most of the stuff.
Hands down worst professor I have ever had. His lectures are pointless, and he doesn't care whether you learn anything. I missed two classes due to my grandmother's funeral and he said "I don't care if it's your grandmother's funeral you don't miss my class because it makes more work for me". Truly a terrible person overall
He is VERY specific in what he wants, and may not tell you exactly what he expects off the bat, but he lets you turn in you r work as many times as you need, until you get an A. A lot of "bonus" points on line. Explains everything with examples you can relate to. Very good professor, but you have to warm up to him for sure!
he is da best
If you don't have a good grasp of previous Chem classes and can not self teach, this is not the teacher for you. Moves a very fast pace that is unforgiving if you fall behind. Seems very gruff/unapproachable in lecture but isn't that bad 1 on 1. If you study the book, you only need to show up for labs and tests.
Can't answer a question witst an answer, always another question. Doesn't cover the test material until 2 days before. If its on the practice exam count on it NOT being on the exam. He is very downgrading and NOT personable. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!!
he really is not helpful. if you go to his office hours alone he's much more friendly. he's obviously very smart, but not productive as a teacher. rude in class and answers questions with questions. likes to assume you know everything prior to entering his class. very frustrating and short tests, so if you miss a couple you will fail
By far one of the worst teachers I've ever had. Answers questions with more questions and generally talks down to the class as if we are stupid for not knowing everything already. Lectures are practically useless, and problem sets get covered too close to the test to adequately study. If you can avoid his class and get a different one, do it!
very rude and unhelpful... lacks clarity! i wouldnt say he is very difficult, but i took gen chem 2 @ osu and found 171 to be more difficult. i can tell he hates teaching and does not give a sh*t. does cscc know how bad their chem department is? so many people fail.. not just a d but 30-40%. avoid.
I don't understand how anyone would want to take CHEM from this guy. He's a smart guy that knows absolutely nothing about how to teach. He cares nothing about his students, constantly talks down to the class, and is always asking pointless, unclear questions that are impossible to answer "correctly". Reading the book is the only way you'll learn.
If you get him, make sure you read the book. He doesn't really teach and his lectures are useless. Be prepared to do a LOT of work outside of class. If you only rely on lectures, you won't even know what concepts he was supposed to teach until the day before the test.
Avoid this professor. Do not take his class. He punishes people for asking questions and being interested in chemistry. His lectures are worthless. He sits in the back and plays Solitaire during labs. He is rude. It's obvious that he does not enjoy teaching. He spends more time teaching math estimation than chemistry.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. I had an A in the class overall, but literally flunked all of the exams except the finals which saved me. Passed with a C. Lectures? USELESS. Exam reviews? USELESS. A lot of self studying and A LOT of reading from the textbook. If you don't like to read (like me) I suggest you steer far far away from professor Blaha.
avoid.. not bc he is crazy difficult, but he makes it really hard to do well bc he does not teach (its true, he plays on the computer). im not a chem person, keep that in mind, but i need this course and this was the only time that worked. even the chem ppl in my class said he was confusing. i wish cscc had more helpful chem professors.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! His lectures have nothing to do with the tests and his tests are difficult. He goes off on tangents that make no sense and he has a bad attitude when people ask questions. Just take my advice and chose a different professor.
The WOST teacher I ever had. Please stay away from this guy. He doesn't teach. Goes off topic a lot. Very rude. Lectures are useless. You will not learn anything from him. Waste of time and money.
RUN AWAY!!! Do not take this guy as your professor. He is HORRIBLE! He never explains anything clearly and his lectures are a joke. He is rude and never explains anything. His tests are difficult because he doesn't teach. He should be fired. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO LEARN AND PASS!
I took his 1171 chem class and he is absolutely the worst professor or teacher I've ever had in my life. He never puts grades on ur papers, he always aanswers ur question with another question. He makes you feel dumb and brings you down when you don't know something. You better know how to learn from the book if you take his class. Avoid him!!!!!!!
This professor failed to help students in any way. Every time a student would ask a question he would answer it with another question in a condescending manner making it not only hard to understand the material but also causing students to feel uncomfortable for not understanding the material.
If you can study independently then this will be the easiest chem class you will ever take. You just have to put up an instructor who is not interested in educating his students, and his less than desirable personality. If you need a teacher who will instruct or answer a simple question (which most people do) then this instructor is not for you.
Its teachers like him that make people terrified to take chemistry. He doesn't teach his material well, when students ask questions to try to make sense of his lectures he shoots you down and belittles you, and thus the cycle continues. Students don't understand the material and the teacher wont help them. You need to love your textbook to pass.
Though I passed the course with a B I didn't understand his teaching what so ever. He very rude when it comes to questions being asked and makes you feel dumb for not understanding the material..If you want to do a lot of independent work he is okay, if not he is not that great!!!!!!!!!!!
Although he doesn't use the conventional method of teaching, I was very fond of his classes. Simply because he made chemistry fun. Its true he doesn't give direct answers but if you follow his lectures and use the text book, its not that hard to get a good grade.
If you want to do well in Blaha's class I recommend not going to class and studying on your own. I got an A in the class by reading the book, doing his problem sets and online assignments, and watching youtube videos for examples. Tests are largely easy if you prepare. Dont be intimidated by him, just study the material he gives you.
Dr Blaha's personality takes some getting used to, but if you study the book and watch YouTube tutorials his tests are fairly easy. Don't bother asking questions because he doesn't give direct answers. Overall I think he means well, but he doesn't always come across that way.
complete waste of time. managed to get a B in the class because his tests are 20 questions multiple choice and look a lot like the online homework. he's lazy and rude. I had a really hard time catching up in the next class because I didn't really learn anything from him. DO NOT TAKE if you have to go on to any additional chemistry.
Words that describe Professor Blaha: Rude, belittling, ignorant, impolite, inconsiderate and so on. He was no help to a teacher and when asking him a question he gave inappropriate, unprofessional comments. He made my semester miserable. Do not sign up for this so called "professor's" class.
I love chemistry, but this class is very dry and boring. Luckily I don't need to go to the classes or study to ace the tests, which he never posts online or passes back in class. He is otherwise an average boring old man professor. The tests are too easy and the labs are as well, which the latter isn't his fault.
This professor is rude and seems to enjoy belittling students. He does not answer questions and is as clear as mud in his lectures. Avoid taking his class at all costs. A separate room should be issued to this professor just for his ego. Students often read the book in class instead of participating because lecture is so unhelpful.
Do NOT take this professor. He is very rude and I was scared to ask questions due to the way he responded to questions. The lectures were useless and boring. The best thing to do is teach yourself the information.
Try to avoid this professor. He is rude and does not like answering questions. Many students are afraid to ask questions due to him being rude. The best way to pass is doing all of the work on your own. The lectures are useless and boring!
Every review about how horrible this professor is, is exactly on par with my experience in his class. Incredibly rude when answering a question, never passes back tests, plays games during lab, answers questions with more questions, I left this class more confused about chemistry. He is awful. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I hate this guy
Worst professor ever. He plays games during lab. Doesn't post grades online and doesn't let you keep your exams after they are handed back. Always has time for questions but, if you ask he will respond with a question. Also, he does not write clearly on the blackboard, when asked to write clearer he said he did it on purpose so we would listen.
WORST professor ever. He does not explain one single thing. Doesn't even tell you how the class works and what assignments are due. Doesn't know how teach at all or maybe he just doesn't care. Not only that but he talks about women in a very demeaning way and generalizes women as if we were all the same. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
It is impossible to ask him questions. He is very demeaning and does not take to them very well. The class overall is fairly easy as long as you read and do the online work (the tests are very similar to the online stuff).
I would not take this professor, he does nothing to help you. If you ask a question, he makes you feel stupid and never gives you a straight answer. I had to use a tutor and teach myself the material because of his dry, rude and boring personality.
Dr.Blaha was not a very good professor. However, he curved the grade and helped me pass which probably wouldn't have happened if he didn't do that. It's VERY hard material and I had to get a tutor to pass. But he helped me pass so horray! If he sees you trying and showing up for class he will help you.
I love chemistry. I hate this guy. If you want to save yourself from trying to calculate you own grade and hoping you pass this class then don't take this class. He is the worst professor I have ever had. Save yourself.
ABSOLUTELY THE SINGLE WORST TEACHER ON EARTH. AVOID AND AVOID IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADE. VERY RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL TO ANYONE THAT ASKED A QUESTION. THERE YOU GO STEER CLEAR OF HIM
Hard class, hard grader, if you study hard and really understand everything you can get a B.. I dont know about an A. He can be very blunt, but thts just his personality, he tries to joke, hes not a bad hearted guy but hes very tough. Go to him in his office hours he will be more than happy to help anyone.
This guy was so boring that I didn't go to a single lecture after the second week. Fortunately, I already knew everything that this class covered - as it is as easy as high school chem, so I got 100% on all the tests (did 50% of homework though). If you want to die of boredom - take this class. I love chemistry, but even the labs were boring...
He didn't teach everything on the tests.
Lectures are very long and bland. Most of the essential material is not covered in class. The textbook is a must if you want to do well and learn anything. Homework is done online but can be redone until it is perfect. Several opportunities for easy credit. I suggest doing it with notes and reading the textbook. You won't learn anything in lecture.
The textbook was a better resource than this professor, and that's never been the case in any college course I've taken. He asks vague questions and if your answer is unsatisfactory, he doesn't explain why. His demeanor is iintimidating, aloof, and condescending. I do not recommend him. Find another professor.
Unless you want to feel degraded & disrespected, don't take this professor. He spends his lectures staring at the class waiting for answers that he hasn't taught properly & scolding the student who has the guts to speak up. He spends his labs playing solitaire in his office. He will make you lose faith in humanity because he is so rude & bitter.
Terrible teacher and I won't recommend him to anyone.
He is unhelpful, condescending, and overall a waste of time. The only days where it was even remotely helpful to go to class were the days he went over the homework because it is exactly like what was on the tests. Otherwise it was one of the worst classes I've ever been in. Your best bet if you have to have him is to buy the book a get a tutor.
If you want to teach yourself, stay in his class. I learned more from reading the book and only showing up on lab days (only to turn work in worth points) than I did when I actually attended lecture. He does provide for easy points, but as everyone else has written, he is extremely condescending and does not take well to being asked questions.
There have been times that students corrected him because he was giving incorrect answers. He was found sleeping in his office more than once, instead of prepping for the next class. The guy isn't a tyrant as some would say, but he doesn't know his stuff or really care about the class.
Many people consider Organic Chemistry to be a difficult class in and of itself. Unfortunately, Professor Blaha made it even more so for me. His lectures were difficult to understand and he was very demeaning when questioned about the material. I would not recommend this class unless you are confident you can instruct yourself.
The textbook provides more answers and explanation than Mr. Blaha does. Skipping class to do practice problems is your best bet. Mr. Blaha teaches one to two topics per 110min lecture. When asking a question, he replies to the student with "I don't know, wouldn't you think that (condescending)" tests are easy to prepare for if you practice daily.
Just Awful
This dude was horrible. The study guide and the test were two completely different things. He would make you think the test is more one mathematical equations than when you took the test there would be almost on math and it would be all concepts. The only thing that will save me in this class is automatic 100s on the labs. Do not take this class
very smart but not a great professor. do all the reading yourself and go to class to listen to him talk about the FDA and make jokes. he is an enjoyable professor but the way the class is taught is horrible. no study guide for the test other than homework. i would not recommend him unless you are great at doing the work yourself.
I did not learn anything from him !!!!!!!!!!!
You will learn absolutely nothing from him but his tests are easy if you teach yourself from youtube. I would take again, just because his tests are easy and I have no problem learning from youtube.
WASTE OF TIME. Professor Blaha seems to care more about his solitare high score than his students who sadly have to pay money for his pathetic class.
Do not take his class. I am disappointed that CSCC continues to employee this "professor". Any question you ask will be met with "I don't know, do you?" or some variation, followed by a 20-30 minute long period of time where he continues to ask the question over and over to the students who don't know the answer. Stay FAR away. Dropped to save GPA.
Worst professor I've ever had. He doesn't answer any of your questions on the material and is very confusing about how he grades assignments. His explanations on the material will just confuse you even more. If you have to take his class don't bother going to lectures and teach yourself using the textbook and the internet.
His Quizzes are not very easy, but if you do the the homework and submit the lab report you will get full points in it. He has 5 quizzes 100 points each.
If you struggle with chemistry, take another professor or love the book a little more. Good guy but lectures with no notes the whole class. Answers questions rhetorically and typically ends up on a tangent complains about liberals. Easy tests for the most part and easy points.
The lectures basically won't help you at all. If you're the type of student that can teach yourself and read from the textbook, this is the class for you. If not, definitely don't recommend taking this class. The labs are hard because he doesn't really help you through them and they're just challenging in general.
Do not take this class worst professor you'll ever have
The WORST professor ever! If you want to get an A in Chem, do not take this class! I repeat DO NOT Take this class with Blaha. You have to teach yourself EVERYTHING. He comes to class with nothing but a Dr pepper.
Can't get any worse than this!
most students didn't like relating to him, but I found his direct, rhetorical (possibly sarcastic?) commentary and answers on the material to be HILARIOUS. However, this is hands down the toughest course I have taken at C-state. Straightforward grader, but a lot of work. BUT, I did learn a lot of interesting Chem because he REALLY knows his stuff.
Worst professor I've ever had. I love chemistry and the CHEM1171 itself is easy, but his lectures were terrible and I ended up teaching myself everything online. If you have questions, he won't answer them. He doesn't explain well at all. He is very rude and sarcastic. I should have just taken this class online.
This "professor" is the worst teacher I've experienced in my entire academic career. He clearly does not care anymore, refusing to teach his class a single valuable portion of information. His constant tangents make the book a necessity. I've seen negative ratings on this website before, but this guy truly deserves every ounce of this criticism.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had the misfortune of having. Extremely condescending and expects you to know all of the material without lecturing, or power points. Lecture is an absolute joke. With that said, he is very smart, just does not pass on his knowledge to his students. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU CARE FOR YOUR GPA. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
Worst teacher I've ever had. He's very weird and a bit creepy. He doesn't tell you what he explicitly wants and he will stand in front of the class for periods of time if no one knows the answer to the question he has asked. If possible I would suggest another professor.
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVEERRR!!! DONT TAKE IT ANY CLASSES WITH HIM. THE LECTURE, THE REVIEW AND THE TEST ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. If you want to pass then dont have him as a professor. He does no notes, only math problems on the board. He just talks at the class during every lecture expecting you to know what hes talking about. His tests werent always like the practice problem sets so you have to read.
He doesn't use notes at all. Read every chapter more than once, do every chapter question, online HW, and the problem sets. Know exactly what your question is before you ask him, and be prepared to figure it out yourself. He was very caring when I had personal issues, but you have to talk to him, tell him the issue. READ & READ & READ THE BOOK!
I wish I had known about this site before I took this course. I have no problem saying that his class was one of the worse I have taken. Please read all the reviews because we are all saying the same thing. DO NOT TAKE. DO NOT TAKE. DO NOT TAKE. IF YOU CARE FOR YOUR GPA AND GRADE. DON'T. You have been warned.
He is AWESOME!!! His classes and labs are never boring. He is always punctual to classes and labs. He really understands his stuff deeply. He is willing to help you with all of your questions. For me, he is FAR FAR FAR BETTER than my almost-four-star-rating professor.
He is that kind who assumes students must know the material. No power points, his anwsers to questions confuse even more. The whole class is about talking. I do regret taking him for this course. I wished i read the reviews before. Make sure you buy your book and have an unlimited internet connexion cause you about to study like crazy!!!
I wouldnt take this class again if my life depended on it. Ive never had such an unhelpful and patronizing teacher. My drive has been completely killed. One of the first things he announced in class is how many people drop his class, he really takes pride in that. Youll feel miserable, dont take a class of his.
I have this class right now and actually in class right now . This is how bored i got from his teachings. He does nothing but talk and barely writes on the board math problems he expects you to know . Someone said he brings nothing to class but Dr Pepper thats so true . Im trying to get the text book and just teach myself smh
Very nice professor. Willing to help you at any cost. Easy labs and easy quizzes. Also easy test if you study the topic very well. However youll find it hard if you dont study and ask for help. Also the tutoring room will help you in labs. Gives you full credit on labs. Easy points overall.
I wish I could go back in time and get a different professor. He provides no materials for the students and he explains things in a confusing way. On top of that, he is incredibly condescending during the class period and has long awkward pauses. The only good thing about this course is how all the assignments are participation points.
was very hard but after a test or so I started to get the hang of it. he's honestly not a bad professor at all. takes some getting used to but always willing to go back over things. attendance not mandatory but chem itself is a hard subject so skipping class wouldn't be smart. grades on competition which is very helpful. would take again!
Very lazy , terrible lectures
Ridiculous professor, creates difficult content and expects the class to follow lectures that dont even relate to the subject at task.
very easy
Expect a C or lower on all tests.. they are all multiple choice though and only 20 questions. The questions are not very related to what is taught in class. To study you should use the chapter review questions that are already answered on blackboard..
Don't take this teacher for any class, he goes on long tangent rants that have nothing to do with the material and he never answers questions directly. He isn't helpful and you'll struggle in this class even if you have a high background in the sciences. Hes also very creepy, talks about naked people often. Extremely pointless and a waste of money
The class itself is easy if you are someone who can just read from the book and teach yourself. If you have any questions or expect to get help from the professor, forget about it. Professor is incredibly condecending and makes you regret ever asking any questions or seeking help.
He makes everything more difficult than it needs to be, he won't answer any of your questions, you won't know when things are due or what he wants from you on the homework for the class. It isn't straightforward and he will not help you at all. He makes you feel like an idiot if you ask him any sort of question.
He expects you to read the syllabus as well as to know all the deadlines up front so unless you group with other people, there's no way you'll be able to keep track of all the assignments/labs. If you want to pass his exams, it is extremely helpful to redo the online assessments because the problems sets are not %100 guaranteed on the exams.
This man is hands down the worst teacher I've ever had. He is not understanding of those who do not follow his teaching style, which by the way is extremely messy and unorganized. He is an intelligent person, but this is a really big downfall with his class because he can't explain things to people who have a loose understanding of chem. -100/10.
Professor Blaha was the worst professor I have ever had in college. His lectures go off on tangents, he emphasizes math that is not chemistry-derived, makes you feel like an idiot if you ask questions, will not answer emails, says inappropriate jokes in class and takes something interesting and makes it a horrible experience. Stay away!
While it is possible to pass Blaha's class, it is incredibly difficult. You will need to teach yourself at home by reading the chapters. The best way to study for the tests is to practice the self assessments first, and then practice his problem sets. Even though he designs the problem sets, it does not have everything you need to practice.
I would not recommend anyone, especially not pre-meds, take his class if you need to continue on in the course sequence. He does not use slides, instead he just talks at you and if you don't understand you teach yourself using the book. Tests are multiple choice so there is no partial credit. Minimal feedback. Labs are graded on competition.
While taking tests he likes to throw little curve balls, or quiz on things that were in the textbook, but weren't said in class or were very briefly discussed. He would also never answer questions straight forward and belittle people when they did. Got my class to never ask questions because of it. The class as a whole was frustrating and annoying.
His lectures were barely helpful so I had to learn basically 95% of the material by reading the textbook.
He is completely unavailable. Every time I reach out to him I regret it. He is rude, condescending, and tries to make you feel like an idiot for asking questions. I am taking the class over the summer and we can't meet because of COVID19. The class was supposed to be in person and he has not posted any lectures or real learning tools.
Here's how I passed gen chem 1: -read each chapter/ take notes -did practice problems in textbook -do all self assessments -do all problem sets Do all these things before each midterm. You're basically self teaching. Complete the labs and redo the self assessments before exams. The final is also not cumulative no matter what he says... you got it!
He did not set up a course that was conducive to online learning. His pre recorded lectures were incredibly dry and all of the material had to be self taught from the book. As someone who does not have a knack for chemistry I found this format to be difficult. He does not do a good job of "dumbing it down" for the average chemistry student.
Does not know how to teach chemistry, says he will grade for completion, miss one question and you will receive no points. During this pandemic, teachers have been available through collaborate to answer questions, hold online lectures he has offered no help, and said he will not being doing this. How is this teaching? We are failing its on him!
Professor Blaha is difficult to understand because he does not speak good english. He also told the class that labs would be accepted for completion, but rarely accepted labs unless they were 100% correct. Whenever anyone asked him for help, he responded in broken english that was hard to understand and was condescending.
For the love of your grades and understanding of chemistry... avoid Blaha. I am currently taking his online general chemistry class and everything is having to be self taught. His assignments and labs are confusing and his lecture PowerPoints are unclear and hard to follow. Even when asking for help, his responses are negative and unhelpful. 0/5
His class is set up poorly. Its impossible to follow and hes not helpful at all. Im teaching myself. All of his examples are just him reading from the textbook. I dont think he actually knows chemistry himself. If you want to do well take another chemistry class.
Hands down the worst professor I have ever had. DO NOT take his class. Not only is it incredibly confusing and terribly set up, any time you approach him with questions he sends back paragraphs of "advice" that is at best unhelpful, and it worst condescending and demeaning. If you want to keep your self esteem and grades, pick another professor.
I honestly didn't have any interactions with Mr. Blaha because he barley responded to emails. This class was really you teaching yourself because we didn't have any live classes because stated in syllabus it would be too much. Around last month he decided to start doing live classes to help people but at that point I think it is just to late.
I honestly have had little interaction with this professor because he didn't respond to my e-mails. We didn't have live classes because he said it was too much to teach in a sort time. You basically are teaching yourself, about a month ago he decided to start doing live class to help with questions but at that time I think it is to late.
I was hesitant to take a class with Mr. Blaha after reading the reviews on here but it just goes to show that reviews never paint you the full picture. Mr. Blaha is willing to answer all and any questions you may have for this course and gives quick feedback. He is on top of everything.
Professor Blaha has been one of the worst professors. His lectures consist of answering questions in a way that no one can understand. Be prepared to teach yourself all the material and do the problems on the PowerPoint slides he provides. No need to buy the textbook because all of his slides are directly from the book. Labs are very hard.
I had Professor Blaha for summer semester and was very disappointed. His lecture is 30 min of summarizing what we will learn then asking us if we had questions on material we dont understand yet. I used a textbook from another school because it was better. His responses to questions leave you more confused than before.
WORST PROF EVER. doesn't care at all about his students and he will make you feel stupid for asking questions even though he's always begging us to ask questions. if you have another option don't take his class this semester has been the worst because of him.
This was my 2nd time taking chem after not doing the best at OSU. So I knew most of the material already. If I didn't I do not think I would have passed.
He was not a good professor at all, but it was such an easy class. All of the labs were basically participation. It was annoying to have a test every week but it was only 10 questions and multiple choice. I wish he was teaching the chem I was taking this semester just bc of how easy he was.
