Really cares about his students, goes out of his way to help you.
take this class
great teacher. nice guy, funny, and cares about students.
i just ranked him before this but i had to correct his name...JOHN Briggs
he really knows how to teach
a bit boring, but he tries to be funny and is VERY clear in explaining.
I hated 241 but this semester has been a lot better. Really nice guy, tells random stories during class to keep you awake, CURVES!, definitely reccomend taking his class!
a little boring, but a nice guy. the class is not that hard.
No question this guy is the best teacher I have ever had at JMU. He is absolutely hilarious. I haven't done a homework problem this year, I attend about half the classes, and I currently have an A.
He's a great teacher. He's so funny, and is willing to help anyone!! He's fair and a really good person. Take his class!
Great teacher. Gives more than enough examples to help you through. Also enjoys talking to students. One of the best teachers I have ever had.
Cool guy. Talks alot about his disertation. Easy going. Plenty of examples. Tests are normally easy but recent one was appraently tricking. Very generously curved it though. Overall really good. Take his class.
Funny & random guy. The class material is tough, but he is clear and relays the info well. Plus he's very approachable, helpful & laid back.
Very likeable guy. He's nice and very helpful. The material is hard but he teaches really well. His tests are kind of tricky, but there are 5 tests so you can afford to do bad on one or two.
Best professor I've had in College of Business! Very willing to help you & really knows his stuff. Tests are not bad, only 2-3 chapters on each & there are 5 tests. No attendance policy but I recommend going b/c he gives good examples! Take him!!
242 will be hard, no matter who the prof, but he was nice, funny at times, and new his stuff. But, it seems he goes too fast, so if u arent a fast learner, don't take him
Great teacher! Funny and knowledgable. Take his class.
fantastic guy. I failed 242 the first time, but got a B in this class. he really is willing to help you and is really fair. there are no surprises and if you do your work you will do fine. also funny and charming
All he does in class is go over examples....not a lot of conceptual stuff...very hands on.
Dr. Briggs is very helpful. He is very knowledgable and takes time to explain things in class. His examples are very helpful. Take his class!
He's awesome. The class is kind of a bore, but that's just the nature of the material to me. I don't think he's teaching it next semester, though. But I really like Briggs. :)
A very nice man, really wants his students to do well and very personable with the class. No quizzes only random hw collection and assignments. Usually gives and A for effort on HW. Curved every test would recomend going to class.
Briggs is a very funny and interesting guy. His teaching style is very free with no real structure. His tests are some-what difficult; however, he gives you TONS of material to help you study. I basically failed every test and still managed to get a C. Def. recommend Briggs.
Good teacher, class is dull though.
I highly recommend taking Briggs for 241. He starts off with a nice slow pace, covering about one chapter per week. He is pretty understanding and easy to talk to. Just put the effort into understanding acct and you'll do fine. I have an A right now by reading and doing the hw problems. Take him!
Dr. Briggs is one of the funniest teachers I have ever had. I always look forward to going to his class. He explains the homework during every class, so it's really important to do the homework before each class even though he doesn't collect it. The tests are hard but if you keep up with the material you should have no problem getting an A or B
yes! take! i surprisingly did very well in this class-hes very funny and talks about stock market alot-sometimes in class i have no idea what he's talking about and feel lost but i just studied hard and got A's/B's on tests. Some pop quizzes, nongraded HW, go to class, study (i made flashcards for diff "events" helped out alot); great teacher!
Simply the best accounting professor, take him!!! so fair and lenient, and hilarious too!
Professor Briggs is awesome!! He is always willing to help! If you put in the time an A or high B is very possible.
He's a great teacher. He explains everything over until everyone understands. If you can take him for 241 you better get him.
He is a great teacher, clear and concise. He really makes sure that you understand what is being taught. He also makes a class like financial accounting seem like a piece of cake. He doesn't teach unnecessary stuff that you don't need to know. He also prepares you really well for the final. If you get the chance, take him, you won't regret it.
Take Briggs if you can- he is a really great teacher and an A is attainable. Do the homework and study..no reason you should do poorly.
DO NOT TAKE!!!!! This class was nothing I expected. His tests and weekly quizzes are extremely difficult. I thought this was going to be one of the best accounting teachers, I was wrong. AVOID if possible.
VERY hard teacher. i have not got below a B+ in any of my other COB classes. I barely got a C in his class. Grades really hard and is impossible to do good on the tests. has weekly pop quizzes that only lower your grade. DO NOT TAKE!!
Briggs, worst 241 professor on campus. Offers no help in office hours and makes tests impossible. Although he is a nice guy, it in no way resembles the way he teaches. Try and get another professor if you can!!
i dont know what everyone's talking about. accounting is a hard class regardless of who is teaching it but Briggs does the best job by far. ive taken 3 different accounting classes and Briggs has been the easiest and best at explaining things. definitely take him
A very good teacher. Makes accounting interesting. You do have to work in COB 241 to succeed.
Accounting will be hard no matter who you take it with-unless you just "get" it right away. Briggs is definitely one of the best; gives easier tests than the others, offers help, quizzes are easy, and he goes through all the homework in class. Definitely take him!
Best Teacher there is for this class. I actually enjoyed this class. Hes so dorky and funny and such a great teacher. Take him over anyone!!!!
Simply put: Dr. Richardson is the man. If you struggle in his class, he will help you out a ton. You will study non stop but learn an unbelievably amount of information. Easily one of the best professors in COB. Great teacher. none better in the business school
Dr. Briggs is a very nice man and excellent professor. He will teach you a ton of information and studying lecture and the textbook is essential to doing well. Make sure you do the hw, it will help for the tests. The tests are really hard, Im an accounting major and have receiving a B- and C+ on the first 2 tests.
Passionate about teaching 241. Clear as day at explaining accounting concepts. There are no surprises on his tests, just what he covers in lecture. No evening exams and his exams are easier compared to other 241 teachers. Assigns HW but goes over it each class. You either get accounting or you don't, but it is much easier if you DON'T SKIP CLASS.
A great proffesor. The class is pretty easy. Lets you out of class early a lot. Take him.
No quizzes. Tests are hard. Not the most helpful in office hours either. Homework is not collected but recommended in order to do well.
I'm just going to warn you that Briggs doesn't explain stuff completely. His explanations are short and I always feel like I missed something. His class is boring and frustrating. And I don't know how he expects us to learn the material if he doesn't care AT ALL whether any of us does the homework or not. Not doing hw is how you get behind.
Briggs is by far the easiest 241 professor at JMU. He is extremely clear and basic with the material. HW not collected, but he goes over it everyday. Tests are exactly like examples and homework, no surprises. As an accounting major, wish I had taken someone harder.
Briggs is a really nice, goofy guy. That being said I think he's a terrible professor. I went to every class, studied, read the book, but accounting just didn't come naturally to me. Tests are hard, there are 4 and they are your only grade so you better know it all. I'm retaking the course; only take Briggs if you're good at accounting already.
The first test was easy and I thought he was pretty clear on everything, but as it gets further into the semester it gets harder, but not enough to at all prepare you for the final. I ended up with a B (usually a 4.0 student) after an all night study session before the miserable final (got a 78 on that)
The class isn't to bad, but he refuses to teach the basics you need for the final and manegerial accounting. Don't take him! he will be easier than other teachers this year, but nextyear will be awful for you.
Briggs is a really nice guy and the class is easier compared to others. Hw is not collected but you have to do it.If you make an effort to do the hw you will be fine on the tests. Only negative unlike professors he doesnt teach you the T-accounts which may sound confusing but if your read Ch.3 wh he tells you not to youll be striaght. A+homies real
Professor Briggs is a great teacher. He does anything he can to help you understand the information. Test are not impossible and if you read the chapters and do the homework then you will be fine.
Funny teacher and it seems like he teaches a lot in class, but when you get to the tests they're impossible. But he curves all the tests and weighs them differently so you're best grade counts the most. Homework and attendance not mandatory but i would go anyways. Not an impossible class but i can already tell 242 will be a struggle
Briggs is a great guy to talk to, especially if you like finance. I felt the class was almost useless though. I taught myself via the textbook because his lecture was based on doing HW problems. He curved the tests an insane amount. I don't know how the class struggled. Do your homework and his practice problems repeatedly and you should get an A.
He is a really, dry, but funny professor. I enjoy going to his class. He changed his syllabus to fit the students better - less material, more review, more practice. Do the homework and participate and you'll definitely get a B. It's a difficult class, but he makes it better.
Although everyone says he's an easy teacher I did not learn one thing in his class. He does not teach during class and you must teach yourself. He has not helped me one bit. I regret taking him. I wish I could say I would take him again but to be completely honest I would never. This teacher does not help you get ready for the final.
He's a great professor on his own, but when you have to take a cumulative final exam that other 241 professors have made, it's impossible. I felt like I was taking a different course's exam because everything was so different from what he had taught us (or didn't teach us). Great guy, tough class. I'm now not prepared at all to take 242.
He teaches a lot differently than most 242 professors. No CONNECT. Read the book a lot to understand. He tries really hard to make accounting enjoyable. Tests aren't too bad. Can miss a lot of class.
Briggs is the best... he spends a lot of time on each chapter to really make sure that you understand the material. If you go to his office hours he will clarify whatever you are confused about. His tests weren't too bad as long as you complete the study guide and do extra book problems you should do fine.
Professor Briggs is extremely intelligent and you can tell he knows what he is talking about. He wants students to succeed but it is not an easy class. He will help if you ask for it. Do homework and reading. Would take again.
Briggs is really just a great teacher. When it comes down to it, he's very clear in what he's trying to teach. He reviews material frequently and is good at letting you know what you have to versus what you don't. He doesn't use connect but expects you to do the hw. Do the hw and you probably will do well in the class. Plus the dude is hilarious.
Only 3 tests and a final. The second test is doubled. Doesn't collect homework or connect. Also doesn't teach or really use T-Tables. The textbook doesn't help either.
I had a MWF class and it went by too fast for as slow as he talked/taught. I felt like we didn't make use of the class time we had. I thought the practice problems would well prepare me for the exams but I thought wrong. Multiple choice section was easy, the free response was not giving room for a lot of errors and no partial credit.
Briggs is such a great guy. More than willing to help you. Emailed him with questions and he was quick to respond. He is a bit dry but overall one of the better accounting teachers. Some say he doesn't prepare you for the final however I did just as well on the final as others that took different teachers.
Best accounting teacher you can have. Give 6 exams which seems like a lot but he just splits up the three exams into 6 shorter exams which is only done to help improve your grade. If you go to class and accounting is something that clicks with you, it is impossible not to get an A. He is also one of the funniest professors I've had.
You lucked out if you got John Briggs. Easily my favorite prof at JMU so far. He's super helpful sweet. The class itself is hard material and you definitely have to work to get a good grade, but Briggs breaks it down so well and thoroughly that you'll definitely know whats going on. I actually looked forward to going to his class. Definitely take!
by far the best 241 professor. tests can be extremely challenging but as long as you practice all the homework, practice problems, and pay attention in class theres no reason why it should be difficult. a lot of people in class still manage to struggle a lot, but its definitely doable to do well. 6 exams can get to be annoying though
Briggs is a great accounting professor. His tests go right along with the practice questions he gives and what he teaches on is what you will be tested. His lecture are little dry but he will crack you up. If you have a choice for 241 professor TAKE HIM!
best professor i've had at JMU by far. Take him!!!!!
Don't need textbook just pay attention in class. Has 7 exams with class averages around 65%. Very hard class but manageable. Super dry sense of humor. Lectures can be quite boring. Def go to office hours.
I loved Briggs. As an accounting major, he made me love accounting even more and he even tries to go out of his way to help you along the way. Wish he could teach the rest of my accounting courses for me!
Best 241
literally the best professor in the world. has the mind of a student, and extremely approachable. crazy awesome at teaching complicated topics.
Briggs is the best accounting professor! His lectures and homework teaches to the test, and the extra practice problems are super helpful. He is also very willing to help during office hours by going over old tests and homeworks! The class is definitely hard but if you put in the work you will do well.
He is the best 241 teacher. If you do the practice problems that he gives you and study for the tests you should do well. He does all the material in class, and he doesn't use the textbook. It could help you but I didn't use it. He curves all the tests. The final is hard and you need to study really hard for it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course. Briggs makes this difficult course as fair as possible. 241 is hard but Briggs is always trys to curve tests or throw questions out if applicable. I found the homework to be easy and the lectures to be enlightening. I spent much time in his office to get extra help. Hands down one of the best in the accounting dept
i literally love briggs. The class has 6 tests and classes are not mandatory at all.. but so helpful since i didnt even buy the textbook. hes such a genuine professor and is just so nice. I thought I would fail this class but i have a 104 in the class. gives hellllllaaa curves. love him love this class
Going to class was pointless, he taught nothing that was on the test. DO THE PRACTICE QUESTIONS! The only way to do well If you don't know accounting is do Prac. Q's and use the tutor as much as you can. Briggs is not a good teacher at all, he wouldn't go over any of the practice questions in class even when asked.
Briggs is awesome. The class itself is difficult so if you want to do well, DON'T SKIP CLASS. He doesn't really take attendance so it's really easy to skip but don't! I love this guy, our final got rescheduled and he set up better times to take it so we didn't have to do math at 8:30PM. HE CURVES GRADES A LOT. He's willing to work with you. 10/10
Briggs makes a hard class doable. He is quirky and goes off on little tangents, but he is super nice. Practice is the key to success in this class (and his curves). Do the practice he posts on canvas, and the tests wont be too bad. He curves all his tests by a good amount. Attendance isn't mandatory but its tough material, so I would recommend.
my dudes and dudettes - don't take this mans. he literally has no idea what's going on half the time, gets off tangent and talks for HOURS about things that have nothing to do with the material. gives no homework, theres no room for extra points except for 2 quizzes which are worth all of 10 points. he's so unhelpful and doesn't work with anyone.
Briggs is a great professor. He's scatterbrained, but overall knows what he's talking about, is very understanding, and is always willing to work with students on what works best for them. If you do the practice problems he uploads before exams (he puts solutions up) and understand them, you should be set. He also curves exams heavily. Great guy
Super great professor! Always rounded up grades on tests and made sure that people were not failing. I wish I could take him in my upper-level accounting courses. I love this guy!
Briggs is not the most exciting but is a nice enough guy who breaks things down slowly, the entire class is only graded by 4 exams , you dont need to buy the textbook for this class
If there is any option for you to take this class with someone other than him, do it. He doesn't know how to explain things clearly, cannot offer specific answers to any questions, and overall is extremely unhelpful. I just took the class for credit and not a grade, but I still struggled a lot. Save yourself and do not take him.
I would not take this course again with John Briggs. It is graded on only a few tests and the tests and class work are very different. But, I think we all got stuck with him this semester if you are a business minor. I wish he was more helpful
Briggs does an awful job of going into detail & explaining answers. He expects you to understand and not ask questions. He bluntly ignored many questions I asked this semester. The online textbook is useless. He gives practice problem sheets. You are responsible for printing them out and those sheets are your saving grace. I only passed bc of them.
test heavy. only grades are the tests. a lot of studying and practice is required in order to do well.
Awesome professor! Show up and he'll make sure you understand things. Not a super challenging class but it definitely takes effort and practice; nice part is he uploads all his lectures and provides tons of practice problems online, just don't forget to do them or you'll be screwed. Lots of exams however.
I literally love this man. He was so understanding when I had multiple unfortunate circumstances this semester and used his own time to let me make up tests. I suck at math but because of his clear teaching style I was able to understand. Attendance is not mandatory but I highly recommend it because it is super beneficial. Take his class I <3 him!!
Dr. Briggs is a great choice for accounting. He is a very easygoing guy that does not require attendance and always reviews material when needed. The only grades are exams, but as long as you show up to class and review the practice problems you will do fine. I would take Briggs again for sure.
Great professor!
Professor Briggs was an absolutely incredible professor. He provides guided notes so you always know what to focus on. All his lectures are also posted online so if you have to skip, you can still catch up. He provides all resources to ensure success and will answer any questions you ask as thoroughly as possible. Amazing professor and person.
Amazing professor! I saw his ratings online so I took his class as an elective because I needed a few more credits to graduate. He kept his lectures interesting with short stories or just by his reactions to students. Very funny, very knowledgeable in the subject, but the class did feel slow at times. He curves every exam, extremely easy class.
Good Professor! Had to take the class twice but went from a D to an A. So going off that it is very important to actually attend class and do the practice problems. Also, would say to make sure you are on top of it. It is not an easy class by any means
TAKE IF YOU CAN, Briggs is a great professor for 244. He understands that this is a class for a minor not a major and the workload reflects that. To be successful, go to class. Thats it, it you show up he will lecture and go through practice problems you should do fine on his tests. Everything was graded super fair and he want the class to pass.
This guy is awesome. He is such a nice person and teaches well. I was able to finally understand accounting because of his teaching style. The grades are only based on exams but there are multiple exams and they are not very long. Can not recommend him enough.
Briggs is probably the most difficult professor to get information from. He makes it seem like I'm dumb for not understanding and if you try to help someone out he calls you out instead of helping that student better understand. I had to teach myself the material on my own time and tune him out because he goes on a ramble on irrelevant things.
Very understanding professor and tries to make class interesting
Personally I thought his lectures where extremely boring. There is no homework but you have 5 exams. He does post a bunch of practice problems leading up the each exam. Attendence isn't manditory but if you don't go your screwed for the tests. He doesn't post the class notes. He prints out a packet every class for notes.
Professor Briggs is seriously the best. He makes accounting super simple and easy to understand. He also knows this is a class people take for minors and treats it like that. He is super funny and I really enjoyed coming to class, although it is not mandatory. Take him if you can!
This guy makes accounting easy. 10/10 would take his class if possible. The workload is light and the lectures are very digestible.
No clue how he graded his exams or his points/curve system, it felt very wack. Going to class is pretty usesless, all he does is yap. A good grade is possible though if you have patience and effort.
Honestly don't take him, he doesn't teach anything, he just talks all class about stuff not related to the course. He did put small curves on everything (test/quizzes) but I think it's because everyone did poorly on them. 3 tests & the final and 3 quizzes. Doesn't prepare you for the final at all which hurts your grade. Avoid him if you can!
Professor Briggs was easily one of the best professors I have ever had at JMU, I highly reccomend taking any class hes teaching.
He gives curves on all of his exams, the class is tough but he makes things a lot simpler. Would recommend him 10/10 times.
I really enjoyed Prof Briggs' class. He posts all his lectures from the COVID era online, which I found incredibly helpful for succeeding on the tests. The practice problems he provides are also extremely valuable for preparation. He is funny, but his lectures can feel a bit lengthy at times. Highly respected and kind, he was such a sweetie.
Briggs was an amazing professor! He cares ab his students and going through content thoroughly at a slow pace. Attendance isn't mandatory but suggest going to class, though the lectures can feel long. Only graded on exams with no homework, and he posts online lecture videos to help in addition to tons of practice problems to prepare for exams.
Professor Briggs makes the class super engaging. Definitely go to his lectures - he breaks things down clearly and the practice problems are super helpful. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for study prep too.
Extremely nice guy and makes the content very easy to grasp. I had no issues with any concepts in the class, and he would reiterate material until it was completely understood. Finished with over an 100 because he curves his exams. No reason to take any other professor for this class.
Great professor. 242 isn't always the easiest class but he gives every opportunity and every resource necessary to succeed. Highly recommend
