Great teacher, very clear, has a good TA. All around good guy.
Hes a great teacher, just do his prectice exams and you should do well
VERY nice person. GOOD lecturer except he tends to ramble and tell stories.
Tough class, great Prof! Very friendly and will help you in anyway he can.
Knows his stuff. Quizes on Fridays are a pain, but help you for the exams.
Self-paced honors can be hard b/c his notes suck. Don't get behind in this class
Good prof. Knows his stuff.
Funny guy, very helpful, do the parctice exams and you'll do fine
Self-paced course is either a curse or a blessing. Use his videos in the library
take good notes and don't get behind and you will do fine
Everything on the tests is in lecture. go to class and you'll get at least a B.

Nice guy, watch out for module exams though, hard if you skip class. Hard work
talks a lot about himself, do practice problems be4 exams, lots of memorization
No Comments
hard class, but easy compared to other chems
Lectures are sometimes boring....he goes through the material too fast.
class hard, goes really fast, nice guy will help u out,use any help offered
I want to touch the burmie
nice guy; kind of hard but lots of study tools--practice exams help a lot
He's a good teacher, but the class is hard. Do practice exams or you will fail..
Hard material but offers a lot of help. Go to class Do Practice Exams Nice Guy
great guy, makes boring material more interesting, study hard and you'll be fine
Hard exams, do the practice exams. Find someone with old quizzes
I barely studied all semester and got a C-. There is a great curve in this class
He is a very nice professor; do practice exams and you will be fine.
nice and helpful, tells cute stories in class, study hard and do practice exams
He's Awesome!!! Great professor. Study alot , dont slack off, you'll be fine!
Practice exams very very helpful and loves riding his bike to class. Sweet guy.
Very good teacher, nice person, big curve in class, so it's hard to fail. Do the practice tests, they help A LOT

This guy is connected. He is the head of the chem dept and knows countless other professors in other schools. If you are a chem major, get to know this man! Remember, a big part of the game is who you know ;). Also, hes a great prof!
terrible class, take something else like chem 103. Test are impossible, lectures are confusing, the only thing that helps is the curve and the T.A.'s. Worst science class you could take. Its so very boring long and a big waste of time.
good teacher & nice guy... the old exams are really helpful, so are the review sessions, take good notes, do practice problems, and go to the ta if you need help and you can't fail. There's a nice curve too!
Nicest guy in the world! His exams and quizzes are so much memorization, but the TA helps! Very good class with a good professor!
He's a great teacher who wants to help his students. Take advantage of that. Exams are kind of hard, but if you study you'll do great. Come to class and go the to library to get the notes, they help!!!
Very sweet & smart man. Very easy. You learn alot. Just go to class, get his notes from the library, and take the practice exams. Quizzes are easy A's. Adds 5pts onto your Final Semester Average. Great class!
Nice guy, very understanding when you have a problem. Wants to see everyone succeed. Practice tests will save your life!
awesome professor, unfortunately my TA was an idiot. class is soooo pass-able, just do the practice Exams and you'll be fine
It is an easy class if you study the practice exams. They are basically duplicates of the real thing. I have read and done none of the practice problems, and I have a B/C. Burmeister really wants to see people do well!
Excellent professor. His courses may be hard at times, but you learn a lot, and he gets across information very well. He also tells some great stories, which always makes for interesting lectures.
Very intelligent, quizzes at the end of each week are helpful to make sure you know the information. He gives you practice exams- DO THEM, they help. Overall he is a really nice guy who really cares about his students.
Great professor that really knows his material. Always willing to help students out of class. A rare professor who actually wants to see all his students, and even those who aren't, succeed.
nice guy, quizzes are substantially easier than exams, do a fair amount of work and you'll get a C
This man seems very nice. I don't understand all of the material because he spends thirty minutes of the lecture rambling about God knows what that is totally immaterial to the real material. His quizzes are fairly easy, but the exams are killers. He does give his time to make everyone understand.
its impossible to understand what he is teaching.. he goes to fast and expects you to know every thing that he does. His tests are really tricky and hard and there was no point of going to lecture beucase i ended up having to teach myself anyway.. if there is anyway to change your proffessor I WOULD
overall nice guy, quizzes are easy a's, tests are ridiculously hard, study the practice exams, do suggested practice problems after class, dont procrastinate becuase its too much material to cram for!
He's very passionate about chemistry. he keeps lectures interesting. Quizzes: easy, tests: hard (due to volume), final: fairly easy (Buy that book!)
aww, such a nice man. he always tried to keep the mood light and seems to know what he's doing. good teacher, eventhough the class is hard. but hey, this is rate the teacher not the class, so yeah. good teacher
He was impossible to comprehend! he went from talking about chemistry to talking about his wife in the SAME SENTENCE! if you aren't an advanced chemical engineer working for NASA you wont understand what he's talking about! GOOD LUCK!!
Hard to understand, and the lectures are very boring. The TAs were amazing though. Weekly quizzes are easy, exams are pretty tough, and he ends up giving a 5 point curve since there is no lab. Its not that best, but you'll live.
Get your good grades on the quizzes! The exams are pretty difficult because there's so much material. There's a lot of useless info that you'll only need to spit out on quiz/exam once. A lot of people program into calculators. Reasonable effort will get you a C.
i had dr. b back in the mid 70's and he was one of the best teachers i ever had and got me into chemistry - and after a 25 year career as a a chem e, i feel i owe a lot to him!!
I had Dr. Burmeister back when Nixon (yes, you read that right) was president; i.e., 1970-71. I thought the world of him then as a teacher and a person, and still do. It's no accident the man has a long resume of teaching awards. If you're a chemistry or chem engineering major, you'll do very well to take his courses if at all possible.
Seems like a nice guy, just has really boring lectures. He does try to lighten the mood with a story or two, which is always nice. I just have a problem with sleeping in that class. Tough class, but what do you expect from chem?
Very passionate about chemistry, but not an easy professor. Tests are extremely hard and its almost impoosible to get an A in this class. Work really hard and you'll get a B.
He seemed really hard at first, but he does give you a booklet full of past exams that are very helpful for the tests. The quizzes are pretty easy as long as you study. I didn't use my book at all so I wouldn't recommend buying it. His notes were good and there were many review sessions to attend before the exam just incase you didn't understand.
JB is absolutely, hands down, obsessed with chemistry. However, this does not set him apart from probably one of the most intelligent men I have ever hears speak. His pompous attitude gets frustrating sometimes though. Watch out for his overly detailed e-mails. In the end, the course is not that hard, just study the syllabus and practice problems.
very good professor, offers many study sessions throughout the week so go to them and u'l be fine, study the notes very well and use the past exams for the tests and u can do well, i got a D in chem 111 and a B in chem 112
Burmy is a really nice guy. He goes off on rants about the world and stories of his life but it is all interesting and makes for a fun lecture. He is pretty good at explaining chemistry and gives you easy ways to remember concepts. The class is tough but the curve makes a decent grade possible. An 85 is an A and you pass with a 40.
excellent prof! went off on tangents about the "good old days" a lot...very wise and good to talk to and very interesting! don't bother w/ a text book you never use it...his psi guide is great and MAKE SURE YOU STUDY FROM IT! all of his questions look like the ones in there! weekly quizzes & killer exams! if you work really hard you'll do well =)
amazing teacher! He's like in his 70's so he obviously loves what he does, and is very good at it! Don't buy the textbook, just the PSI guide, its his personal notes!
Great teacher!
his lectures are always fun he always has fun stuff to say. tests and quizzes are really hard unless you study. he's a great guy though. LOVED him!
This man is the finest example of a professor I have ever discovered. Take him, he is God Incarnate.
Sooo much better then the honors section. I actually learned chemistry in this class. Burmy is so funny and interesting and his stories are awesome. You still have to study for quizzes and exams though. They're definitely not easy.
exams are hard, do all practice tests in the PSI guide and you will do fine. quizzes help A LOT!!
The tests were on the harder side, but the quizzes were easy and the PSI guide is fantastic for studying. He talks about sports and his personal life for like 10 minutes at the beginning of class. But he is really charismatic so I forgive him for that.
Explains everything really well. Tests are really hard, but it is not hard to do well, TONS of partial credit. Quizzes every week. Good classs.
JB is probably one of those professors you only find once in your lifetime. He's a great guy that always tries to lighten up the mood of the class. Quizzes are really easy if you study decently and exams are pretty hard if you try to cram the night before, do those practice exams on the PSI guide, they will save your life!
Man, I had him for both Chem 111 and 112 and I have to say he really is one of a kind. He always has great stories to lighten the class up and adds his own style to the course. His tests are definitely hard, but he has a curved grading scale to make up for it. Overall a great prof...Burmeister FTW!
He's great. Period. Buy the PSI guide and NOTHING ELSE. He is the funniest, most knowledgeable, and quirkiest chem prof. ever.
Genius...makes you think
I would recommend taking this class (if you can) even if you only have to take a lower level chemistry (103-104 or even 101-102). Dr. Burmeister is a difficult but incredible professor who really wants everyone to do their best. He is a very nice man and he always tells funny stories. Plus, he has been here for 94 semesters (you read that right!).
Burmeister is the cutest old man. He's a very difficult teacher, I highly recommend going to the help sessions before quizzes. If you're not required to take the class I probably wouldn't, but its not awful. Don't let the exams discourage you- it gets easier. Do all practice exams and study the PSI guide. If you try hard you will do well.
His class should be the hardest course all over the freshman courses
I had Dr. Burmeister way back in the 80s and he was great - one of the most personable profs I had at UD, the best in any Sci class. Tough but fair and willing to take extra time to help. If you can get a C in his class, you've actually learned something. I actually liked his side anecdotes, which broke up the barrage of chemistry information.
The class is extremely difficult regardless of professor. Burmeister is one that you either love or you hate, but if you are good at chemistry and you work hard outside of class, you will pass. Study early for quizzes and tests, because his grading scale is only low enough that most people get a C.
He is an awesome professor, he is a great lecturer with lots of interesting info and digressions, provides lots of study sessions w/ the TA's still writes his notes/quizzes/exams by hand.Is very good about getting things graded and back within a few days and sends out lots of email reminders. Nice guy, difficult but fair class.
I took Dr. Burmeister's classes way back in the early 1970's and I still use what I learned today. No, the classes are not easy but study and remember what you learned and you will be better for it in the future. Thank you Dr. Burmeister!
Had him for 111 and 112. He has one of the greatest personalities you will see in a professor. Great communication and cares about his students. Many people hate him because he throws questions on the test that he never taught (on purpose). The class is geared toward engineers so you have to use your knowledge to solve the unknown. 5 tests each 20%
SURVIVAL GUIDE. Class very optional. Go to the help sessions rather than class. [DONT BUY THE BOOK i never opened it, ONLY PSI GUIDE] Study the old tests and quizzes, so you are studying efficiently. Got an A with about 4 hours of work weekly including class time, help sessions, and studying. I see no point in going to class or watching the videos
He is very clear in his lectures, which are not mandatory. If you choose not to go to his 9am lectures you can always watch them online which is great! His weekly quizzes are based off old practice quizzes that a TA will send out if you go to his help session. Also, his exams are just like his practice ones. TAKE HIM and go to the help sessions!
BURMEISTER! By far the best chemistry class I have ever taken. I feel like I learned more in this class than when I took honors and AP chem in high school. His tests are not easy, and your grade is dependent mostly on them. They are no where near impossible though! Quizzes are easy though. An awesome man with a deep passion for what he does
One of the best chem teachers I've had. Class is basically like taking ap Chem again except different topics. tests are straight forward(gives you 4 old copies in psi guide including final). go to help sessions and class and youll learn alot/do well.
Took the class in the fall (the only time CHEM111 is offered) and received an A. Quizzes are very easy, ten quizzes worth 20% of the grade, along with 3 exams each worth 20% and a final exam (the last 20%). The tests are tough, but they get easier as the class goes. Exam Three should be an easy 85 and up. Definitely a good professor.
professor burmeister is a very good teacher. he puts all of his lectures online so you dont have to go to any. i never picked up my textbook at all. his TAs are extremely helpful so go to their help sessions even if you think you know what youre doing. the quizzes are easy but the tests are difficult but not impossible.
The Burmeister is a great teacher, but that doesn't mean the class is easy. The weekly quizzes are fine, but the exams are quite difficult. Go to the extra help sessions provided outside of class, they're really helpful.
Professor Burmeister is one of, if not the best professor I've had here at UD. He's always willing to help, and breaks up lecture with funny stories from his own life. That being said, the class is not easy, and it takes a lot of work to do well, but take him if you can.
He is the man. He persuaded me to go to this school when i visited after applying and he has lived up to his part of the bargain. He explains everything in great detail and gives definitions that are impossible to misinterpret. Love this guy and the material.
He is nice and enthusiastic. The course is easy to learn by yourself. He does not help a lot because his voice is low, and his word is unclear. UD capture is an advantage of his class, so you do not have to go to his every lecture. Overall, if you are smart, it is easy to get a good grade from his class.
This guys is great. He is a very intelligent teacher who describes his lectures in great detail. He asks challenging questions and always slips a quirky funny story within his lecture. There is no HW for the class except practice problems which he strongly encourages to do. The trade off is a quiz every week on each module.
Burmeister is one of the Chem department's finest. His knowledge is endless and his enthusiasm to share it is infectious. His lectures are clear and enjoyable, his notes (which he publishes) are very helpful, and his exams are graded fairly (but they're not easy!). I had him as a freshman and he's still one of the best professors I've had.
Very nice and welcomes to ask questions, don't need to go to lecture but, help session made it much easier.
Great guy and always so cheesy that it's funny. Teaches with enthusiasm. All lectures are on course capture so no need to attend class. Quizzes weren't too bad, find previous quizzes to practice and memorize. Exams were hard but you could pass by memorizing the old ones and practicing them a lot.
He's a great professor. He doesn't use the textbook a lot, but he does sell his class notes (the PSI guide) which I found really helpful. If he's unclear, he's really open to questions and great at answering them. There's a quiz during the discussion sections, but the review sessions with the TAs during the week get you prepared for them.
He is not a easy professor, but he is definitely helpful in learning. His PSI guide helped me a lot. Just attend his lectures (or watch it online) and you should be good.
He is an awesome professor. Such a cute old man who truly loves chemistry. The class can be challenging at times but his grading scale is awesome. Don't buy the textbook just get the PSI guide and you should be fine.
He has changed what is expected of students. The first two exams are normal chemistry, but the last is only five days from the final and he removed all extra credited that was offered to the previous years and instead made it mandatory material. His hand writing is also terrible and he gets off task easily.
Textbook is useless. PSI guide is a god!!!! He explains things in weird ways sometimes. Read the PSI guide. UDCapture for this class is a life saver. Study for the quizzes and perform well on the midterms and the final has barely any weight on your grade. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS. The TAs are fantastic. Take advantave of that resource.
Don't bother buying the textbook. Make sure you buy his psi guide, it gives you all the information you could possibly want to know for first semester college chemistry plus a bunch of practice exams from past years. His class was not easy, but he makes it interesting. Pay attention and go to AT LEAST 2 review sessions a week, you should be fine.
Burmeister is a wonderful professor. He extremely knowledgeable and he enjoys teaching the material. You will never use the textbook but the PSI guide is absolutely necessary to the class. There are multiple review sessions a week with his excellent TAs. Exam questions can be tricky but if you go to review sessions you will be fine.
He is really old school..I can't stand his teaching and his lectures. I only have been to one lecture this semester, I have learned everything from help sessions/TAs. In general, you will learn a lot because he is so in depth, but his exams are death..and the weekly quizzes don't prepare you for it at all. The curve is the only thing that saved me.
He is a nice guy. However, he is not a good teacher. you don't need the textbook. Make sure you go to the help sessions because that is the only way I have learned anything. You will study forever for test and still get low grades. If you don't have to take this class don't!
He puts trick questions on all the exams. there are 2 midterms (both given in SATURDAY MORNING exam blocks) that are HARD. The quizzes won't prepare you, neither will taking AP Chem. I got a 5 on AP Chem, and this class is really tough. All his materials are handwritten in cursive and can be hard to read.
Lectures are very unhelpful. Puts trick questions on exams. Exams are held on saturday mornings (we had one the day after halloween). Exam questions have very little to do with teaching material. Book is unnecessary. He makes you buy a textbook he wrote himself.
Attendance not mandatory but missing class is not recommended. UD capture can be confusing because he does many examples away from the podium with models etc.
Hes a great guy and really cares about each and every student. Sends 1000 emails a day, this class is his whole life. BUT its impossible. Averages were always 60s and the material is just so difficult, and he increasingly makes the tests harder than previous yrs. Help sessions with prev students is the only way i got a B. Have to study SOO much
Hes a great man but his class is very hard. The help sessions really saved my grade. Around midterms i was failing but ended the year with a C-. Very helpful and actually cares about his students. The exams are extremely difficult though.
Burmeister is a great guy. His tests are extremely difficult however they are manageable. You must start studying earlier that way you know which questions to ask at help sessions. If you try you can get a good grade in this class but as you can see a lot of students still think it's high school and that they don't need to study much. They're wrong
He's a professor for all the right reasons. Cares a lot about his students. However, with that being said, his class is virtually impossible to do well in. ESPECIALLY for someone with limited high school chem experience. ONLY take this class if you LOVE chem. Buy the book. You might only read it a few times but it is helpful & you need it for 115
Tests are difficult, but he gives plenty of past exams to practice with
I had burmy for CHEM111 and now i am in CHEM112. His expectations are very clear, and the PSI guide is literally all of the notes and past exams. Study this, A LOT, and your grade will show. You learn and get used to his exams very easily, but they are difficult. the weekly TA sessions help a lot too!! He is a very nice and caring man.
He is such a great man! Take his courses if you are hardworking enough!
If you are not sure about your major, go ahead and take chem103 and 104 instead of chem111 112. Believe me it will make your life easier. Burmeister is a nice man, however, not a super helpful professor. His hand writing is beautiful, but gave me hard time to focus. His exams are tricky, the average is around 60 for every single exams.
Dr. Burmeister is the most incredible professor I have ever had. He happily answers any questions and provides everything necessary for an A
I got A in all of my classes except for CHEM 111. This class wasted my sososososo much time. To be honest, this class is extremely difficult to get a good grade. But professor is a really good guy.
what a gem. my fave person of all time. 111/112 were not hard and were very different than standard AP chem equivalent classes, so the new material was pretty interesting. i basically never went to class by the end of 112 but the weekly quizzes and practice exams ensured i got an A. I miss Burmie and wish he was still department head :(
He is really good. However, he makes the toughest test and quizes. Questions are crazy. We have quizes every week. Tests are on Saturday.
Burmy was fantastic. The greatest prof I've come to know at UD. He gives great lectures, and cares about his students a lot. However, this was a hard class. You really need to work hard if you want an A. That being said, there are plenty of practice exams and quizzes to ensure that if you put in the effort, it'll show. Will be missed, a true gem.
Burmy is the one of the greatest professors I have met. He has retired this year. I took his CHEM111/112. Tough classes but he provide everything on his PSI guide and on lectures. He is a great Professor.
I was an international student with average english.. he was among the few who helped me till graduation. Great person
The instructor's delivery was consistently unclear, hindering the learning process. Furthermore, the lectures frequently deviated from the approved curriculum to focus on political agendas and biased commentary. This lack of academic objectivity resulted in a failure to cover the core competencies of the course.
