One of the worst teachers I have ever had. He does not explain the class material at all. The tests are extremely difficult and very hard to pass. There is a ton of reading. No one I have talked to enjoys this class. It's a pain to attend.I do not recommend him at all.
He is a great teacher, the tests can be kinda hard, but only if you really dont do anything. He's funny, and very nice and helpful. Great class
Funny guy. Attendance is taken(helps to show up). Posts powerpoints online. Multiple choice tests. Tests are fair and sometimes graded w/curve. Read the text. I didnt and still passed with a B+/A-. Puts ethics in real terms. Suggest taking.
Nice person, confusing lectures
Prof. Burn is great. He is hilarious and really tries to engage the class. He grades on a good curve and is always available for help. He's extremely friendly and approachable. He occasionally gets off track and will start telling jokes and stories which are usually hilarious. Overall, he's a great professor. And rather cute =]
took it for a math gen ed- best decision ive made. he was so funny and made the class interesting-- material is kind of hard because its thinking outside of the box (alot) but he is always at class on time and quizzes and tests arent bad if you come to class, ask questions and do your homework! it helps your grade. overall I would recommend him!
Loved this class!!! Some of the topics can be confusing, but he is more than happy to reexplain anything during or outside of class. Test are some what difficult. Reading the assigned text is important. Would definitely recommend this class!
Amazing professor, kinda quirky and crazy in his own way but his funky stories help with his explanation of certain philosophies and definitely keeps you awake at 8oclock in the morning. If you're split between 2 courses, definitely recommend you take this class! The material may be a little difficult but he definitely helps (on speeddial even!)
Overall a really good professor. His lectures make sense, even if he does get off topic sometimes. He grades fairly, and through the year tailors grading to the class. (Initially was going to knock off one quiz grade, but then knocked off two quiz grades and one homework grade). You will use the book quite a lot in this class, BUY IT! It does help!
Very fair in grading, gives lots of chances to improve your grade. Really wants to see you understand and pass his class. Attendance mandatory and book usage extremely high. But he's fun and good at explaining things, also good at making people laugh.
He is hilarious! Best class ever. At first I was alittle hesitant with taking this class and I went into it without knowing anything about the class or him and he made it really worth while! He always had the class laughing! Great teacher and class...would recommend it to anyone!
To me the topics covered were alot to wrap my head around however, he was willing to explain everything more than once. Very funny and interesting. Tells alot of stories and gets the class involved.
Professor Burn is overall pretty good..he does require you to show up, but his notes are always on moodle..books aren't really that necessary..overall you can pull off a 3.5 or higher in this class
He's so funny. He knows his stuff. Unlike other PHL professors, he is very respectful of your own personal views and does not challenge them like other profs. do. He definetly makes ethics interesting. I would advise you to stay on top of your readings and do the study guide. Get a good grasp on the material and questions. He's great.
Burn is a GREAT professor. He is very helpful, smart, as well as funny. Tests a kinda hard, but he grades on a curve. Overall I would recommend any one who has to take PHL to take him. :-)
I took him for Introduction to Ethics, expecting a slightly biased class. I figured out what his views were early on, but his class was open. The lectures are interesting and he's funny. Text book usage is low, I got a 3.9 with almost no reading at all (though you do need to know some of the readings so find out from someone else who bought it).
Burn made the material easy and fun to learn. He was super helpful when it came to people asking him questions. He was funny and liked to talk about random things, which was nice when he was teaching a hard and difficult subject.
He is the best teacher I've ever had at Oakland. He teaches with a great atmosphere, tells jokes, makes sure everyone understands the material, tells you exactly what to know for his test and quizzes and is a easy grader. Do the work, ask questions and you have an easy A. Take this class you can't go wrong best teacher at OU!!
Extremely good professor, just a terrible subject. I would suggest avoiding this class if you don't need it, but if you have to take it, then he is a great guy to take it with. Very interesting and knows his stuff. Uses the book every day, you won't get by without it!
Despite the act that I failed this class miserably, I think Dr. Burn is a great teacher, it's just the philosophers that will drive you crazy. If you're truly interested in this subject, I'd definitely recommend him. I just hated the subject though.
AMAZING PROFESSOR. He tries to help students as much as he can. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
He really can't teach. He once asked in all seriousness, "would it be easier to go over the material before we take a quiz instead of after?"... Since he can't teach and doens't realize it would be easier to be tested on material AFTER we've learned it, test grades are low & the curve is amazing. Like 20% higher. I think he has a problem with women
John is absolutly amazing! He has a great sense of humor that keeps you interested. Will make sure everyone fully understands the material before moving on. Uses movies to help connect issues discussed. This is my first class of the morning right now, and I have yet to think seriously about not getting up sleeping through it.
Amazing prof!! I'm taking him again for another class in the fall, curves like crazy so it makes it easy to do well!!
Word on the street is that he is "good in bed." And by word on the street, I mean he told us he was good in bed. Anyways...if you're taking Intro to Philosophy for a Gen Ed requirement he's probably the best teacher because he only spends about 47% of the time talking about philosophy, and his curves are ridiculous. Poop!
Burn has been my favorite professor at OU. He's extremely helpful, clear on his lectures and cracks jokes all the time to keep you interested. Book usage is on the low side, but he really wants you to learn the material. Tests are easy if you study the power points and take notes. I've never enjoyed a class so much at 8 am. HIGHLY recommend him.
John is an absolute delight. His passion and knowledge about the subject keep students engaged. I would highly recommend him as a professor. I will be taking another class with him even though it's not required.
He was very nice. work load was pretty decent but he offers all the help in the worl
Definatly a humorous class. Tells stories all the time. But when it comes to the materail, its a lot of information. Read the required material, there are questions on the test over it. His tests are oddly worded and are options a-i, so be sure to actually know the material. Wouldnt necessarily recomend this class.
Very difficult class but he really wants his students to get the material. The logic will make your head hurt but Professor Burn will stay after to help. He's very laid back and chill. Do the homework because he grades you based on what you've done, not how you did.
Great professor. His class is very structured and he's very organized. He does a good job of explaining things and is always willing to answer any questions. He also always responds to e-mails.
John was a great professor! I was really nervous at first because I heard that it was a hard class...but he clearly explains the material and is very helpful and organized. He was hilarious and made the class entertaining. I look forward to taking another one of his classes.
He is really funny and interesting! I loved this class and I think if anyone has to take it, then they should take him!
Very good teacher! Enjoyed his class alot; he always kept it funny and interesting, with his own little stories. He was also a very good at making it clear on what was on the test, to exactly how many questions were on each concept. He did the same with the exam.
Best teacher I've ever had! I didn't even enjoy philosophy, but he is so hilarious and crazy that I never missed class. He curves all the tests, so if you use his study guides you should do really well. I'd take more philosophy just to listen to his crazy stories if I could!
Nice guy, REALLY funny and has a lot of good stories! Only thing that's annoying is the way he makes his powerpoints. He'll only put one thought or thing on each slide. So you have about 80 slides that could easily be condensed for more organization/space. But other than that he's great!
So amazing! I'm still in the class right now and I look forward to his class everyday!
Super funny and interesting, plus he's nice to look at. Grades with a high curve, but you still need to know the material. Tests are strange; gives a-h multiple choice, find the false statement. Good class
Would recommend to any student to take Professor Burns. He's hilarious and he tells funny stories throughout every class. Can be very sarcastic, and messes with students so if you don't like that. Wouldn't recommend him. Class is mandatory. Really easy grader, 20% curve on exams.
Best teacher at Oakland.hes so funny and really cares about his students. all you have to do is do the study guides and look at his slides, pretty easy. i definitely recommend him!
Great Prof. He comes up with good ways to make you remember really abstract stuff. And he'll tell you precisely what to study, so it's not tough to get a good grade.
Great professor! Makes class very entertaining and engaging while still teaching a lot of material. He explains exactly what to expect on tests and everything you need to know is straight from his powerpoints on Moodle. You don't really have to go to class, but I would just because Prof Burn is so funny and interesting. Would definitely recommend!
The class was fairly easy. Don't miss class. You won't understand the material by just reading his power point slides. He was hilarious and made the class truly enjoyable.
Funny and nice guy. Good professor, he tells great stories but they get off track and make everything confusing. Tests were not that easy, but he curves them ALOT. When you think your grade is not that good it will turn out good!! Def take!
Such a fun Professor! He made me really enjoy the class. Realistically the material itself was not very interesting to me, but he made it interesting. He is funny and tells the best story. Curves the grades too which helps a lot. Would take another class with him anytime! I am a big fan of his! Best prof I have had so far.
Sometimes goes off into vile rabbit trails. Swears a good deal, makes crude references, explains the book superbly well. Overall, good impression.
He is awesome! Drops quiz and homework grades and curves grades as well. Always willing to help. He makes class enjoyable because he is hilarious. Best professor ever.
Just finished taking his class as elective. Would recommend it to anybody, regardless of their major. Teacher is cool, laid back, not too strict on attendance (I think he allows 6), and he tells u everything u need to know for exam. No homework or quizzes. Only 3 tests and a final exam. Book helpful, but not necessary, I didnt open it once.
Goes off on random tangents and stories that become distracting from the material. So much memorization and goes through lecture pretty quickly. Interesting topics just hard to remember. He's a funny guy,and a cool professor, but I had no idea what was happening I ended up remembering his stories more than his material. Ended up dropping the class.
He is really really nice and tells lots of funny stories but he does not explain things clearly at all in the least bit. I found this class extremely difficult and I worked very very hard to understand it and I just couldn't. I need it to be explained better and more than just once. you have a quiz every week as well as about 3 hour long homework
He was a pretty cool dude, very laid back and understood his students didn't want to listen to him rambling about philosophy the whole time. He would get off on tangents, but it made the class more entertaining, in my opinion. The course work was hard, it was a lot of memorization, the exams were hard as well.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. I wasn't too sure about this class going in but he made it so interesting. He had funny stories that kept me engaged and a true enthusiasm for the subject. The course is very easy if you just go to class and pay attention. I highly recommend this class and this teacher (he drops lowest quiz and hw scores!)
Burn is a character! I enjoy going to class and listening to his lectures and stories. Tries to explain things as well as he can but is super disorganized and all over the place on powerpoints. Loses focus very easily, but one of the nicest/funniest professors ever! Test are hard but he rounds! Take him for philosophy classes!
You get what you put in, that being said, it was always an entertaining class! Wasn't just one viewpoint, encouraged different opinions, which was nice.
Tests are so easy, he gives a huge boost in your grade for coming to class. Also all the tests are curved, and a 95% is a 4.0. I would suggest taking him, even if it's just a gen-ed.
John is an awesome prof! He makes class fun and is really funny. Lectures are power point slides, and some fun movies too. Don't stress about taking notes in class... do the study guides and reading questions and you will be fine. I suggest to split up reading questionsd w classmates it works well. Oh and he has a great curve. Four-pointed class :)
He's a awesome guy. Very interesting lectures, tells a lot of good stories. If you're ever confused he'll always has no problem explaining it again. He's very understandable when it come to emergency and sickness. Very Approachable. He's a teacher that you want to go to his lecture. Use your book, always read. He uses the books a lot.
There are 6 HW assignments through the semester that EACH take a minimum of 2 hours to do, but he grades on effort, not right or wrong; 3 quizzes; a midterm & final. He does his best to make a difficult subject easy-ish. If you need this class, take it with him and only him. You need the book.
Super easy class to meet the formal reasoning requirement! His curves are ridiculously high and he makes everything so easy to understand. Has an optional ch. 7 quiz & hw at the end, so if you work hard all semester, the last two weeks are REALLY easy. He's also adorably quirky and funny. Take him & only him for PHL 102!
Funniest teacher, take it with him!!!!!! Curves so much on tests, and always keeps the class interested and laughing. Great person.
Funniest professor you will ever take! He cares and wants you to succeed and he makes class fun. The subject was difficult for me but I wouldn't have taken it with anyone else. 6 quizzes (drops lowest) 2 midterms & a final as well as hw for every chapter. Sounds like a lot, but he's fair. Curves everything! You need the book. Gives EC opportunities
Professor Burn is really nice and is always available to answer any questions. He grades extremely fair and his tests and quizzes are manageable. The homework assignments are very helpful and the class was definitely beneficial! Definitely recommend taking him!!
I took his class when I was a freshman. Let me say that he was the funniest professor I've ever had. It was an entertaining class. There was many reading assignments, but you'll do well if you don't wait until the last minute. His tests are fair and he curves, which is a bonus. I definitely recommend him.
HE is the nicest professor ever very friendly and he made the class fun and he is extremely helpful. he looks a lot like Gotye
Professor Burn was one of the best professors I have had at OU. He makes the subject interesting and accessible. He tends to go off on tangents but they are funny and are good breaks in between topics. He makes the material easy to learn. I went out of my way to take him for three classes. Grades with a curve. Great prof overall. Easy A.
love love love him! first professor at OU that I like! tells funny stories an the class is easy for the most part! do the questions for the quizzes & look at the slides for the exams! Highly recommended that you take mr. burns!!
4.0! Burn is a wonderful professor! He made class and learning the philosophical theories fun. He always tells funny stories! He curves everything! Just study the power points for the exams. And the quizzes are the same questions from the reading questions. He also drops lowest quiz and exam.
Great professor. Fair. Willing to work with you. Must go to class, take notes, and pay attention...like any other college class. He's really nice, and has some funny stories to tell, too.
Very fair! If you study (use note cards) you will get a good grade. He understands that some people have a bad day when it comes to quizzes and exams, so he drops one of each. Very funny and very interesting guy! Don't feel overwhelmed if you look at how many slides his PowerPoints have, he skips through most of them.
Professor Burn is such a great professor! Yes, logic itself is hard, but he explains it very well. Most of the tests are hard, but he has a huge curve for everything so don't worry about not doing well on them! He really cares about the students and is really nice and super funny. If you're taking PHL-102, take him as a professor!
He is a very nice guy, but the class pretty difficult. Either you get it or you don't. If you have to take this class for credit, I would recommend taking him because he gives good curves and cares about the students. However, if you don't need this class, I do not recommend taking it at all as it is difficult to grasp.
Such a fun class. It was the highlight of my semester. His lectures are very engaging and he is a really funny guy. You have to read A LOT for this class to have any luck passing his quizzes.
Makes the class fun. Drops 2 of 7 quizzes at the end. Curves in the area of 30%. I see a lot of people saying you have to read, which won't be true for a lot of people. I haven't read the book, just listen to this golden God teach.
Excellent teacher. You must attend class to understand the homework and quizzes. There is a big curve for each quiz and midterm which helps tremendously. He truly wants all of his students to do well. Would definitely recommend taking him for any philosophy course.
Intro to Logic has a ton of homework. I took this class cause i needed it for a gen ed. Although i did pass there was a TON of homework sometimes 4 hr assignments. Also a quiz everyweek. John Burn is a nice guy but his class is confusing. He grades on a huge curve.
I really enjoyed this class. There was a reading quiz about every week, but as long as you do the questions, you'll pass. This class was very interesting. He's a great professor and really cares about the students.
I was nervous to take his class, because Philosophy is NOT my subject, but it was one of my favorite classes I had this semester. He makes the material interesting, and his stories are hilarious. Make sure you go to class, it helps immensely. I seriously recommend him!!
Professor Burn is my favorite prof I have had at OU. He is not only the nicest guy, he's funny, his lectures are interesting, and he uses examples you remember to explain difficult things. He is VERY generous with his curves on quizzes and tests. Definitely an easy class to get a high 3 and even 4. He is the coolest guy ever, makes philosophy fun!
Homework was sometimes long out of the book but he was very helpful and it was only due once a week. Always funny and has the class laughing. He is an amazing teacher and if he could teach every class of mine I would have a 3.0 or above in everything!
Easy class if you pay attention during lectures and do the study guide. He curves his test and quizzes. Wants the best for his students
Burn is hilarious. Philosophy is a pretty dry subject but burn makes it fun and relates ideas to modern situations. Has a ton of funny stories he tells and really keeps the class interesting. There is a good amount of reading for the quizzes but it's all pretty straight forward. Would highly recommend!
Great guy and great at teaching. participation is 15% of the grade. quizzes are based off reading only and are 15%. gives study guides the test are pretty tough you will have to study a lot but curves nice.
Professor Burn was awesome! Take him for all PHL class that he offers! For 102 you need the books, take really good notes, and ask questions. Its a tough class and not for everyone but I loved it and he was great at explaining everything. For 103 its a lot of material but not difficult. Do the reading and you'll be okay
Burn is amazing! Took PHL102 with him this fall and absolutely loved the class. Lectures aren't boring at all, and he's very clear w/what's expected. SUPER timely with returning work and tests and very helpful. Not a terribly hard class if you try. GET THE BOOK because you need it for homework. And take notes on lectures. You'll enjoy his class!!!
John is a great guy. He was crystal clear with grading, so every student always knew where they stood (he updates you on your overall course grade weekly). He drops two quizzes and gives extra credit opportunities, too. Logic wasn't a super easy class, but it was certainly manageable and very interesting.
This was the easiest class I have ever taken. He drops the lowest quiz grade and offers an extra credit exam towards the end of the semester. On each quiz/exam, he updates you on your GPA at the moment for the course which was super helpful. He knows each student by name and has plenty of funny stories about his life to share to the class.
Professor Burn is amazing! He does assign a lot of homework, but as long as you do it, you'll pass the exams no problem. If you have a question, or need to clarify anything, he'll definitely help. His lectures are long, but he keeps them so interesting with funny stories. Also, the curve he puts on his exams are insane. It's hard to fail this class
Took logic, super hard class but he makes it enjoyable and easy on the students. Go to class otherwise you WILL be lost. Tests are complicated but he is a fair grader based on if you show effort. practice, practice and ask questions. Time consuming but the best bet for a formal reasoning Gen Ed class, trust me. He's hilarious and approachable.
Great professor whose funny and helps you out. However, this class gave me nothing but more anxiety. Absolutely hated logic. Would recommend Burns but not logic.
If you plan on taking logic take it with Burn! He makes it simple for you. As long as you show up to class, you will have a good understanding. Homework is weighted more than quizzes, so it boosts your grade in case you fall behind in a chapter. The hw doesn't take as long as he say, and as long as you follow his examples its easy.
I loved him.
DO Not take this class online. Perhaps it would have been easier in class, but I took this class online to get a prerequisite out of the way. He assigns his own directions to problems in the book so it is very confusing to do book homework with homemade directions! He will not let you work ahead. Gives you no instruction just assigns problems
Awesome professor. He is very funny and laid back. Often tells his personal stories in class for a laugh and to relate the material. Also a very fair grader. Drops your worst quiz and exam and gives huge curves. The class requires quite a bit of reading but it was easy as he gives you questions to answer during the readings.
Logic is a tough subject but Prof Burn makes it easy if you pay attention and actually try on the hw, you get credit for trying. There are lots of quizzes and tests but he curves everything, generously. He has so many funny stories to keep it interesting and is so nice to his students. Only took the class to satisfy math requirement, but loved it.
If you have to take Logic as a math requirement, TAKE BURN. If you go to class and pay attention to his hilarious examples you are guaranteed to learn something. He curves quizzes and tests by a lot but you at least have to have a basic grasp on the material. There are plenty of opportunities to boost your grade but it's better to get a head start.
There isn't a day I haven't laughed in his class and it was easy, he's a good teacher gets off topic alot but hilarious! Take him if you need philosophy I got a 4.0
Professor Burn was a great professor and funny. I got a 3.1 going into the final without studying anything because he curved his previous tests so nice and I did the extra credit tests. Very helpful and gives you opportunities to boost your grade. Class was a little boring but never disappointing.
Such a cool professor. The material covered in this course can be considered a little challenging but Professor Burn makes it manageable. You have a weekly homework assignment that can be a little lengthy so try to do it ASAP. He is always willing to help and I recommend going to class instead of trying to learn it on your own.
I dislike PHL, but I really enjoyed Prof. John. He is super funny and gives good stories to help remember material. Make sure you pay attention during lectures and take detailed notes. Great curves on exams and easy quizzes based off reading question (that you can google and get the answer word for word).
He makes me uncomfortable, he thinks he's funny and he's not, gets off topic A LOT. Gives decent curves. Don't bother with the books, just use google to answer the study questions. Quizzes/exams identical to the study questions.
Burns is interesting but DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU THRIVE ON ORGANIZATION, he is all over the place & no structure! I payed attention and still had no clue what was going on, easy A but it it drove me crazy. Exams are solely on his lectures, you should go to class. You'll do fine if you pay attention bc he puts a major curve on every exam.
Burn sucks. You get two big books that he makes you read all of (answers are no longer online unless you pay). He doesn't teach during lecture, just makes dumb scribbles on the board and tells stories. He never posts your grade all year so your left clueless. EC is a 6 pg paper, no thanks. Overall crappy class and prof. Every answer sounds the same
Burn makes a dry subject tolerable, but not much beyond it. You have to read 2 books and answer questions on them. His lectures can be really hard to follow at times i suggest reading the text over which he will be covering (makes understand WAY easier). The tests are nothing unreasonable and he curves them, make sure you cover the SG for the final
Prof John is one of the best in the department. If you need to take this class, do yourself a favor and take it with him. Yes, it's philosophy, so the exams can be a little challenging, but he curves them a lot which makes it all even out. The quizzes are BEYOND EASY and boost your grade. He's funny too, which makes class great. Take him!!!
Burn is hilarious, who makes philosophy bearable by telling funny stories and offering extra credit opportunities. There are many quizzes containing questions that come straight from the study guide for the reading, but the answers can easily be found just by googling. The exams are tough, but he curves by a lot making it fairly easy to pass.
If there is one word I would use to describe Professor Burns class it would be "chaos". He gave the worst directions, homework was a jumbled mess, and for many of the homework problems he changed the directions so that it would not make a lot of sense with the material we were working on. long story short, do not take burn for an online class.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. He is disorganized, changes his homework instructions without warning, and didn't post a single grade until the 6th week of a 7 week online course. Sent us a syllabus with innumerable errors (never fixed it) and changed due dates constantly. Terrible communication. Avoid at all costs!
Whatever you do, do not take him for an online class. Very disorganized, inconsistent and more confusing than the text book. Lots of reading, but no lecture provided, and long hours of endless homework. Grades not posted until very late. Multiple quizzes and assignments due the same day. Maybe he's better in person.
This class was horrible. It was BY FAR the most boring class I have ever taken and It was RIDICULOUSLY HARD; this was by far the hardest class I have ever taken and it is a 100 level gen ed!!!!! The quizzes were ridiculous and completely unfair; multiple choice questions had upwards of 10 choices. Take a different class for your math gen ed!!
Though the content in this class is extremely difficult, it is a very passable class. All that matters it that you show enough effort in your homework or that you somewhat understand the material. For as hard of a gen ed as this is, I would suggest John to anyone who just needs to get it over with.
This was a wickedly hard class, but if you need to get it over with, take Prof. Burn. He held review sessions twice a week and responded to every email I sent him within a few hours. You can't ask for much more for an online class. Very kind professor and understands that not everyone is a philosophy major. He also gave a VERY generous curve.
Without a doubt one of the best professors I have ever had at Oakland. Teaches and goes over the material throughly and is very clear while explaining examples.
He's such a funny guy. Gets off topic a bit, but explains homework before and will answer any questions.
This was probably the best professor I have encountered so far at OU. I learned a lot from taking this class and John has a great personality with lots of stories to tell. As long as you attend lecture and take notes you'll pass the exams and if you do the study guides, you'll pass the quizzes!
Prof. Burn is a nice and funny guy. He is a bit disorganized, leading to some confusion. Still, he is a good lecturer, and his tests/quizzes are easy. Grade is based on 3 tests, reading quizzes (he gives you the possible questions), and the final. He drops your lowest test and quiz, and he gives very generous curves.
PRO Knows his stuff Replies to emails Heavy curve CON Changes due dates constantly Doesn't follow syllabus Easily distracted making already dense coursework hard to follow Book over complicated, Google explains these concepts much more intuitively Grades attendance & wastes more than 1/2 of class time regularly Feedback unhelpful when legible
This class was a lot of fun. He tends to go off topic, but he is a good professor. He knows the material and explains it well. There is a lot of work that makes your brain hurt, but it is a good class to take.
He's one of the funniest professors I have ever had, but he gets off topic a lot and talks about his family. He's a bit disorganized, but as long as you do the study guides, you should be good on the tests and quizzes.
Mr. Burn is one of the funniest professors I've ever had. He does talk a lot, but he's very clear about what he wants you to do/know on homework, tests, and quizzes. Usually, he even tells you what and how many kinds of problems will be on tests/quizzes. Homework is weighted more than quizzes, and if you follow the instructions you get full credit.
John is hilarious. I had him for Intro to Logic and I hate math. He is such an easy grader and makes the class incredibly fun. I struggled with the material and got an A+. His class is set up so that you do well. Great curve, great guy!
Makes class very exciting and has hilarious stories. The material can be hard at times and you may start of slow but he goes over many practice problems until students start catching up with the new material. Lots of homework which he grades mostly for completion. Generously curves the tests, and is approachable and understanding.
His stories are insanely funny. The exams are HARD but he curves them. Someone failed the exams and somehow ended up with an 82 in the class thats how much everything is curved (thank god). Make sure you go to the lectures because youre graded on attendance. Also there is a paper to do for extra credit that can change your grade by 3% so do it!
He's funny but that's about it. His lectures get very off-topic, to the detriment of getting the material in. Delays quizzes and tests on a whim or if he forgets to bring the right test to class. Readings are normal, but its hard to find what readings you need to do, he never really tells you in class, and he goes off the syllabus from day one
So far at OU John is one of my top 3 favorites. He always came in the classroom ready to teach and with good energy. Tests and quizzes are exactly like the homework and in class questions and sometimes are the exact ones. Goes over homework questions but also collects and grades it not by complete accuracy but 100% completion.
This is the most disorganized class I have EVER taken. The professor makes you use the exercises from the book, but changes the instructions, doesn't post grades so you have NO idea how you're doing. This is seriously a disaster of a course. None of the material makes any sense and the due dates change every week and are completely nonsensical.
Im gonna make this short and sweet. This class is hard online. A lot of homework, reading, and quizzes once a week. Doesnt put grades in so if youre failing, you dont know. No video lectures and very few chapter notes to help understand. If you are willing to be stressed, then take it online. If not, go for in person.
The worst professors Ive had. It takes him forever to email back, hed rather make the students read rather than considering teaching. His assigns homework and reading that are beyond an entry level course. His tests and quizzes are not on what you read. Dont take his courses, especially his online ones.
This class is horrible. He doesnt grade anything, its 2 days before the class has ended and he has nothing in. His quizzes are not even close to the book. He has pushed chapters behind a week, then doubled up, making 8 things due that week. Chapters are long and he doesnt provide other notes other than the book.
Tough class but good Professor. Truly cared about his students and just wants them to succeed. Took this as an online class, definitely wasnt easy teaching the material to yourself but Prof Burn was an email away to answer any questions. Gave a high curve so everyone who did the work, had an opportunity to pass.
The material is really hard, especially when you take it online. Weekly homework and quizzes. Dont stress if you dont do well on the quizzes or exam, he does curve which helped out so much. May be an easier class if its in person but either way, good Professor and wants everyone to pass.
So wonderful, what a man. A very odd man, but try to take once of his classes if you get the chance.
This course was HORRIBLE. This is an entry level course and the material he tested us on went far beyond that. He spends 90% of class talking about random crap or acting like a child. It's a waste of time going to class, but good luck passing if you don't go. If you need to take this course I would STRONGLY recommend taking another professor.
He was awesome! He is very funny and odd but he makes the class interesting. If you don't understand a topic he will easily help or explain it to you in a different way. Seriously wish he taught all my classes
John Burn was a wonderful man outside of academics. During his lectures, he would continue to go off track and it was difficult to understand the material. He gave extra credit and graded on completion, not correctness for homework. Quizzes were hard, but he graded so that it was easier to get a decent grade. I wouldn't recommend for a lecture.
Well this is the most disorganized professor I have ever taken we now have two tests that have continuously been postponed since February (its the end of March). His grading criteria makes no sense and good luck with the instructions on his papers. I am utterly confused by this class and be prepared for getting emails everyday.
This was by far the worst professor I've had at OU. The only grades are tests and quizzes, and he doesn't grade them until the end of the semester, so you don't know if you're failing or not. His gets off topic in his lectures, and it's a waste of time. I don't know my grade for the semester yet, but don't take him if you can help it!
Burn is the worst professor I've encountered at Oakland University. He gave 5 tests within the semester and 4 were late & all crammed into the last month of class. He sends weird confusing emails with ridiculous excuses. He also made up an entire format halfway into writing a paper. Reading notes don't prepare you for exams. Don't waste your money!
Professor Burn was so disorganized throughout the entire semester. Papers were ridiculous. We had to reach out to him several times to explain the papers. Almost all tests were posted late. Doesn't put any grades in so you don't know your grade until the end of the semester. Made up weird excuses to why everything was being posted late.
He's super nice and cool. The quizzes are word for word from the study guide. Easy A. Offers extra credit. Exams are straight from the lecture.
Nice guy but SUPER disorganized. Goes off topic during lectures and wonders why his classes are behind. 2 quizzes were delayed: he forgot to print a quiz & he gave us the wrong one. When we went online bc covid he didn't post a single lecture UNTIL FINALS WEEK in which he uploaded 4 lectures. Under diff. circumstances I would've reported himto OU
A thoroughly entertaining and helpful professor if you do the reading and participate. He knows what hes talking about but is severely disorganized. Make sure to do the reading questions!! He didnt post lectures until right before the final when we went online. Final wouldve been very hard if not open-note.
He is very disorganized and only grades you on quizzes and tests (very hard questions BTW). The final exam was extremely difficult and he is a last-minute person. He was always behind in posting lectures and quizzes. Definitely a very hard class for a 1000 level course.
Professor Burn was the worst professor I've ever encountered. He's super unorganized. He posts lectures/assignments/quizzes late. He does not grade things until the end of the semester even though the syllabus says 7 days. He's unclear and has a lot of typos in his quizzes/assignments. He gives poor excuses for his incompetence. Big waste of money
He was nice and this class is pretty easy. It consisted of reading quizzes and exams. He gives you study guides that have the questions from the assessments and most answers are on coursehero or quizlets. for covid, we had recorded lectures but his lectures are very boring tbh. he drops your lowest scores too! take this class for an easy A
Uncaring and lazy professor... Started the semester nearly a week late without a word to any of us students. He then provided us a syllabus that was from a previous year. Tests and quizzes were inconvenient and only opened on weekends, through holidays and breaks. Study guides did not help much on the tests and quizzes. I was lost in his class...
Burn is such an awesome professor. Hes so passionate about the material & really engages the class in discussion so you arent just sitting through lectures. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students. If you do the readings & take lecture notes, youll definitely succeed on quizzes and tests. Hes a super personable guy. Take this class!
