Dr. Burris demands that you think for yourself. He is not all that easy, but he's definately worth taking. He gives extra credit. Anyone who tries should do well. Leave your Sunday School religion at the door though.
Lecture style is good, however, lecture material is not. He presents highly biased and offensive views of all religions, rather than accurately and objectively portraying each one. This class should not be taken by those seeking to learn about religion, because it is highly biased. Overall, very easy class and good lecture style, bad content.
discussions are great, the material is interesting, but his test and quizes are pretty tough there's a lot of material. His opinions are pretty biased tough, so u should do u'r own research and make u'r own opinions
This class was horrible. Burris is biased on every topic, and your grades on papers will reflect this if you have opposing views. He claims he is trying to open up student's minds when he really needs to open his own mind up to the fact that humanities should not be taught through one man's point of view.
Excellent class, interesting material and fascinating discussion. Burris makes relgion class worth while and fun. The work load is low, and the class is well paced. I highly recommend REL 2300
Hard class testts and quizes are not easy need to study to do well in his class.
Very Very Biased and not a very good teacher, Lectures seemed irrelevent and you barely learned anything about ancient humanities. I was really upset with his teaching. I wanted to learn about Greek culture not Veganism.
He discusses the content and also discusses each religions pros and cons. The class was straight, but there wasnt real notes of where you can get from online or from class, it was mainly discussion. I wouldnt mind taking him again IF ONLY IF he could give better notes to where we can study from.
I thought that this class would be an easy A, but I was wrong!! The quizzes are hard, and the tests can be difficult. There are 3 papers but he's lenient with those. I don't know if it even helps in reading those books. He went easy on the final. The class is interesting though. I got a B+. I recommend him, but study for those quizzes and exams.
This is seriously the most offensive teacher I have ever had. I am not even religious but all he does is spend his time destroying religion and basically calling people who have religious beliefs stupid. This has NOTHING to do with contemporary humanities. This is not a bash Christianity and further an Atheist agenda course.
Usually I love Humanities classes, but Burris made this a most painful experience. He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had! What he lectures about has no relevance to the class! Do not take this ass! He is egotistical and truly uninteresting and knows nothing!
I am a humanities major and i THOUGHT i was taking a HUM course... however it is a religion course by Burris' design. The first class asked for our opinions and since then we have done nothing but speak of religion and science. No art, no culture, pure religion because that is what he knows. I would ake him for REL classes ONLY & maybe not then!
He's a good teacher and very helpful. He's a little disorganized, but it's an overall enjoyable class.
I would recommend this professor to anyone. He is very lively and passionate about his teaching and involves the class to avoid boring lectures. He is here to help whenever you need it and explains everything very well. I am taking him again next semester and can’t wait!
Very bias, which sucks because most of the papers are based on opinions, if you agree with him then you might get a good grade..but thats if you can even figure out what his point of view is. He doesn't explain himself very well, and does not welcome radical thinking, even though he says he does. Don't take his class, and if you do..good luc
He's a funny guy and his lectures are very interesting. He's passionate about the subject of religion and enjoys teaching it. However, he is very unclear about papers, what will be on quizzes and tests. If you have a problem with disorganization then don't take the class.
I think the biggest problem I had with this professor was that he often used the words 'myth' or 'fiction' in regards to the deep rooted beliefs of various religions. The second problem I had with him was the way that he asks questions that you can't answer right to make a point, but still expects you to answer. *shrug*
Great professor. He does not allow the class to turn into a glorified Sunday school setting. He takes an academic approach to teaching religion. This upsets others when they are unable to prove their religoius beliefs academically. Discussion are enjoyable and educational. Tests and papers are somewhat easy and graded fairly.
I am a christian and still thought that this was a great class and that he was fair in that he treated all religions the same way and was really open to your opinion. You have to know what you are talking about though before you open your mouth and say something because if you do not have a good understanding of your religionhewillmakeyoulookstupid
If you know anything about religion before taking his class, and can basically defend your beliefs, you'll be fine. My views were totally opposed to his, and he took me seriously.
Great professor, contrary to some belief. He's a smug man, so you have to accept that. He teaches you about religions, and while some may shout "Bias! Blasphemy!", I don't think so. I grew up Catholic and am presently dabbling in Buddhism and I don't think he made a mockery of either. He teaches by guidelines. I recommend him. Oh, and I got an "A".
Doesn't really understand how to write exams/quizzes, and doesn't follow the syllabus religiously which is annoying bc he doesn't give you a heads up. Its just bc he's trying to be nice, and he really is a kind man. Very open to opinions, lets the class talk amongst themselves on topics, very insightful, humble, open-minded, and caring.
I thought this class was going to be an easy A, but I was wrong. Burris is the most unorganized teacher I've ever had at UCF and he complicates even the easiest subjects. He goes off topic a lot and, while class discussion can be interesting, I mostly found the class confusing and his tests and quizzes too difficult. I don't recommend him.
A great teacher, made things interesting. Very nice guy, classes were always interesting because of discussions. He was very disorganized though and off subject which could be alright but when it comes time for tests it wasn't clear on what was covered. But he was very easy going.
Teaches this humanities class like a religion class, and not a very good one either. Spent half the class talking about the I Ching (Chinese divination), then the rest about the Wheel of Life (Buddhist). Skipped over 1/3 of the syllabus, never was clear on assignments or class topics. Will aggravate anyone who doesn't believe what he believes.
Dr. Burris is very nice but does not know how to handle people with disabilities. You have to remind him about adaptions, then he does not allow you to use them. IE. Taping. or persons that do not share his exact opinion. Requires 4 texts, uses 2 maybe. Gives exam dates than cancels them, grades tough on all papers because he cancels papers.
if youre looking for a class that just explains the basics of religion, this ISNT it. He talks more about the philosphies of the religions rather than the facts. its a very interactive class. Most of the time students will be sharing their imput about certain topics. not what i expected. I learned more from the books we read than from the professor
Exellent class and very intersting lectures. We got to use our notes on most of the tests and quizzes this semester. A lot of reading to do sometimes but it's doable.
Was an interesting class, although it can be frustrating since the professor isn't open to opinions differing from his. Tests were mainly open note/book, so that was easy. Good class, but don't get frustrated easily or you'll be mad alot!
I didn't enjoy this class. The text was boring, lectures always got off topic, he was disorganized, e-reserve (where most of the readings came from) was a mess! He did try to give extra credit and make the tests easier, but if you arent interested in religion and are just taking this class for a gen ed requirement then I suggest not taking it w/him
GREAT CLASS! I came into the class very interested in religion, and Mr. Burris kept it that way! Tests were ridiculously easy (all open note). Anyone who complains that it was hard probably never showed up to class. Able to earn 10 EC points a few weeks before each exam. I learned more about my own religion then i thought i ever could. I got an A.
I loved mr. Burris, hes incredibly nice, and he gives lots of oppertunities for extra credit, he's trully interested in what he teaches which makes it that much more entertaining to learn!
Terrible. I learned nothing in this class. Most lectures involved complaining about something asinine, such as how it's supposedly "wrong" to say "God bless you." There was very little learning about actual religion, and the test questions were quite vague. If you want to sit in a class with pseudo-intellectual discussion, take this professor.
The most disorganized professor! Last semester people were able to use their notes this semester we couldnt use them on tests. He changes things constantly and the way how he words his test are confusing! He does give lots of opportunity for extra credit
Professor Burris is a nice guy, however as a professor he isn't all that great. He seems to be very biased and sometimes argues with people in class over scholarly information. Make sure you walk into that class as a student and NOT as a Christian. Keep an open mind and don't listen to Gary Yourovsky's presentation.
i am a devout christian and i did not find prof burris biased at all. he is a very nice guy, very helpful, and tries to make everything as fun as possible. and for the record, gary was also a nice guy. great class, i would recommened taking it. if you ever need help, see mr burris at his office. he is a very nice guy.
lost of opportunity for extra credit. burris is a very nice guy. very helpful and insightful. funny too! take him, the class is very interesting. i would definitely recommend him.
Tough class. Tests are very difficult and quizzes are a tossup. Lots of reading. He is very knowledgeable about religions. Be mature and keep an open mind in his class. Offers plenty of extra credit, so getting at least a B shouldn't be that hard. Recommended if you're really interested in religions, but not if you're looking for an easy A.
Great class if you're interested in learning about religion in the broadest sense. Three tests and three or four quizzes make up the only grades, but does offer enough extra credit to get a passing grade. The text is completely necessary for the course. He didn't announce it but once but his TA will basically give you the answers to the tests+EC
hard tests and hard quizzes but i love mr burris. he is very nice and helpful. this class is not an easy A, but it is a fun class. i would recommend it. :)
tests & quizzes are always a tossup. very confusing but knows a lot about religion & is a nice guy. Studying will get you a B
Don't take if your not philosophical or an abstract thinker. very very philosophical, lots of reading. pretty boring if you cant think abstractly. test and quizzes HARD!nice guy, a little weird. pretty biased.
I do not suggest taking this class over the summer. There is a lot of reading and it is necessary to do if you want to do well on tests and quizzes. He doesnt really know how to write test questions. discussions get off topic. will discuss veganism everyday, and try to get you to do the same. allows notes on exams and gives a lot of extra credit.
nice guy, gives extra credit, DO IT! tests are sometimes hard, but quizzes are easy, don't forget to read! group work is easy, don't forget to do the papers! very abstract, very philosophical, which made some concepts hard to grasp, kind of jumped around a bit which made it difficult to understand, overall great guy though!
His tests are very tricky. Make sure you read everything he tells you to. He is not hard pretty laid back.
Worst professor ever...very very discombobulated, very opinionated (and if you agree with his opinions, you're good to go) AND made us sit through a horrific B.S. presentation on veganism given by some jerk we nicknamed Tofu Gary. Burris justified this by saying that "some religions have ethical reasons for practicing vegetarianism". Bah, I say.
Really bad professor. Has discussion instead of lectures, so trying to figure out the answer to the question (even with asking him)is hard, which reflects on the test. Shows stupid movies that you must watch or loose ALL extra credit. If he doesnt agree with what you say, he'll cut you off mid sentence.
If you go to class and write your papers, you'll do really well. He has interesting lectures and involves the class. There are multiple opportunities for extra credit. He tends to be a little forgetful about test dates, due dates, etc.. but just be ready for that and you'll be fine!
John is a relaxed, easy going guy. He likes to get classes involved in his lectures so he has many discussions. The movies he shows are intresting, like Keeping the Faith with Ben Stiller. He offers so much extra credit (like 10 pts) so it is easy to get an A on all the tests. Overall, a great professor, just take his opinions into consideration.
Very biased towards Christianity. Made it hard for me to listen to him sometimes. I liked how the class was a lot of discussion but sometimes it was too much. Tests are pretty tricky, but extra credit is offered.
I hoped this class would be so interesting. But he just gives droning lectures that sound like a one-man discussion. He forgot about our papers, making them feel meaningless. And dropped quizzes completely. And then showed mostly unrelated films. He also did not show up for his office hours when I needed help. Should have dropped this useless class
Professor Burris really takes an interest in making sure his students do well in his class. He's flexible with deadlines, often gives group quizzes or open note tests, and supplements course material with interesting videos. He gives a lot of extra credit and will answer all of your questions! This class is largely discussion based.
Burris is very open and friendly. Lots of good discussion. Lots of extra credit and flexible with papers and stuff. Group quizzes or open note. Lots of books, but some are interesting. He is a little flaky, but overall very cool.
Professor Burris was the best! Open note and group quizzes/test. Mostly a discussion based class. He is very laid back and offers a LOT of easy extra credit. Papers are opinion and simple topics, but best if you take a few days to do. Tests contain a few confusing questions. Final is 13 questions. The Reader is the only annoying thing.
He does seem a little biased toward christianity, but he trys to be objective. His tests and quizzes are mostly open note or in groups, and he grades essays very easy. There's alot of extra credit. I recommmend taking his class in a smaller class size rather than in the big lecture halls because then he engages his students in disscusions more.
This teacher is ridiculous. He is incredibly bias, and incredibly opinionated not to mention rude to his students. This is supposed to be an introductory course and yet he expects graduate work from us. Takes FOREVER to give back grades and his tests and quizzes are ridiculous. I am an A student and I could barely get a B in this class. DO NOT TAKE
He is one of the least stressfull teachers I've had in the Humanities dept. Atleast with upper level classes, he lectures but also relies heavilly on class discussion. We had no exams and only a few papers of which he was flexible grading and accepting late. He really enjoys teaching his subjects and it comes through in his lectures. Take him!
So Burris is good in a small class (from what I heard) but when I took him in the larger class...not so much. He's not terrible but he changes things constantly and tests and quizzes are very difficult. There is some extra credit though. If you don't like biases watch out though, especially if you aren't Christian.
The class is not hard if you like to overanalyze things. Way too many books to buy and going to class was pointless. Tests are hard and the professor doesn't really tell you how to study for them. Would not recommend.
Very unorganized. He continuously changed due dates for papers and test/ quizzes. RUDE! Will blow you off if you don?t agree with his views. Just don't take him. He might have a Ph.D in this field but he is incredibly narrow-minded.
kind of a random guy, but his class was easy as long as you pay attention. my class spent a lot of time on the eastern religions and judaism and christianity and then went through islam in about a class and a half, nice enough guy.
I don't know if these students are lazy or just stupid because Burris was one of my favorite teachers at UCF. Class is set up as a discussion so many ideas are presented. Tests were open-book and in groups. There are also a couple essays which are easy and thought-provoking. If your dumb and believe in religion you may be offended.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER he is unorganized and he teaches mostly philosophy in the religion class. tests and quiz questions are not about the facts of the religions but of philosophy questions that changes base on POV. Discussions are mostly philosophy, not a good prof for religion class.
he will say, test on wednesday.. not be prepared, and then test is like the next week so studying was for nothing;he lost a bunch of our papers; i did all the extra credit papers, movies, went to class, got good scores on my exams and my final grade was a D.. my friend who went to class 5 times got a B.. i dunno... really unorganized. really.
Prof. Burris is a great professor. People saying he was unorganized and such need to realize its not his job to hand out progress reports.(middle school). Go to his office hours or just keep track of your own grades. He may not appear to be understanding, but if you actually speak to him he is the epitome. There is great discussion. Jump in! :)
I really liked this class. He knows so much about religion and it was fascinating to hear him share his knowledge. Tests are kind of hard but if you study it's an easy A/B. Group quizzes a lot of the time. Do the reading. TAKE IN SUMMER!
I really like this class. He does move tests back a lot, but gives email warning. Also, I don't have a problem with teachers moving tests back and having a review day instead. Group tests if your class attends and participates well. Papers are fun, reading is interesting. He trys to be objective to all religions. Close minded people may be offended
Professor Burris is one of the most intelligent and laid back professors I've taken class with. His tests are easy enough if you pay attention. He can be disorganized, but just roll with it. Lots of extra credit. People say he's biased, but they're likely the people that went into the class ready to defend their own religion. Good class. Take it.
this was possibly the worst poffesor i've ever had. he is extremely unstructured and his tests are unpredictable. he gives you tons of readings but almost none of it is on the test. he also tests on stuff that wasn't even talked about.
This was the most interesting professor I have ever had! Yes, he is fairly unorganized and random, but he actually makes you want to come to class. Tests are pretty simple as long as you go to class, and there is tons of extra credit. I completely recommend taking this class!
WORST CLASS EVER. do not take him he is extremely unorganized and tests are usually not what you have gone over. this was the worst class i have ever taken at UCF
One of the worst teachers I've had. He's extremely UN-organized.He's always late to class, and we've only had 2 pages of notes within a 4 month span. Plus, he doesn't give tests and quizzes like he said in the syllabus. It's almost pointless to attend class. I have no clue how he's grading us since we don't do anything but sit around and talk.
Worst teacher. First week of class subjected us to watch an animal rights video: not related to course what-so-ever & very upsetting, discussion lasted a month. Scheduled exams never happen. Sporadic papers related to textbooks. If your opinionated/confrontational you will love this class. Jus sit back & watch the show. Worst teacher/easy grade.
Very unorganized teacher. Misses class often and covers the same information day after day. When you get a quiz ir exam, the info can catch you off guard because he thinks he taught it when he hasn't.
He is extremely unorganized, doesn't do anything like the syllabus says and is frequently late to class. I would not recommend taking him. His tests are on stuff he never taught, and he almost never gives actual notes, just class "discussion" that almost never relates to what we're learning. Don't take him!
Always late, missed class at least 4 times, frequently changes the syllabus. When he does teach it's very random and usually none of it is on the actual test or quiz. Lot's of extra credit though. Lectures for the most part are insightful and he is a nice guy. Curves the tests a lot. Most of the test questions are out of the book so buy it.
terrible professor. ALWAYS late. very unorganized. you'll never be right, he is always right no matter what your opinion. he doesn't review over his tests and everything on the test we never even talked about in class. he seems like a nice guy, he just sucks at teaching
Dr. Burris passed away earlier this month (01/2010) & while I only recently met John and his family, I can tell you he was deserving of more than is written here. John taught a subject that I hope has created a few more tolerant and compassionate individuals. John may not have been a perfect educator but he was a good human being & will be missed.
I have been trying to contact him this month.. no wonder I was not able to. UCF wouldn't tell me anything either. This is crazy. How? What happened??? I was close to him a couple years ago but haven't spoken in a while.
I took Prof. Burris's class in 07. He was always a great guy and taught me a lot. His class was always enjoyable. It's really very sad to think he passed. If his family and friends are reading this they should know he really was a good guy
Does anyone have any information about his death? Mr. Burris became a friend of mine and he will be missed.
Good teacher and interesting class. Be prepared to write essays on the tests and when he assigns the little reading he does be sure to read it because you will get a lot more questions right on the test than the people who don't read the material. I never experienced "persecution" from him due to my beliefs and they differed from his.
I really just wanted to see what everyone was saying about him these days - I'm sorry to learn he's gone. I remember taking World Religions a few years ago. This man was probably one of the most inspiring professors I've encountered and to this day I tell people of his great mind!
