Self-deprecating, with an entertaining dry humour. His classes are so much fun to attend, you almost don't notice you're learning. Yet many of his concepts have stuck with me.
Pretty good professor, funny comments.

Horrible! Soo Boring. Exam was brutal!!!
No joke after i left that exam, everybody congregated at the bottom of Southam. Were i that guy i'd run from the first Eng student I saw. No seriously, if you're in ENG you're gonna have this guy, and well...its gonna suck.
john buschek did a fine job teaching us TSE. all we had to do was build a solar cooker and answer 30 scantron questions. the course was dry and boring, but he was clear and somewhat approachable (although a little pompous).
Fantastic... I'm a girl and LOVE this guy. Who is saying that he's ****? He's hilarious: I've never felt put down in any of his classes.Oh, and if you get a bad grade in his class or think that the exams are unnecessarily hard, it's probably because you're a.) stupid, or b.) a slacker.
has a real dry sense of humour. Hes also an easy marker. The exam was fairly easy too, but sometimes he adds in random topics he's discussed off the top of his head. as for the lectures, well..theyre kinda boring and his notes arent anything special..but you dont really need many notes anyways.
The coursework and exams are pretty easy if you put in a little effort. He's got a sense of humour that appeals to some and not to others. I personally think his lectures are very entertaining.
bus-chek the man knows university is a joke he should loose a few pounds before he dies in class man with experience for everyone taught by Phd's
Horrible teacher. I came out of the class stupider than when i went in. Seriously considering asking for my tuition back. The man should NOT be teaching. I learned NOTHING. Lieterally. NOTHING
This guy has a great sence of humour. Course was very easy. Marking very generous. I would take this class again just for the fun of it. Buschek is great.
Funny guy attend his lectures for a laugh... exam wasn't too hard. Pretty random though don't wish this class on anyone in engineering but your stuck taking it so you might as well be entertained. So this class isn't so bad.
Buschek could go into stand up comedy when he retires, and his classes are amazing. Note that most engineering students don't have a sense of humour nor do they enjoy reading so they often don't enjoy his classes. If you know how to read a book and write a report you will ace these classes.
OHH GOD!!!!.....MAY I NEVER COME ACROSS A COURSE LIKE THIS AGAIN.....FURTHER MORE THE PROF. IS BORING ....zzzzzzzzzzz........I FALL ASLEEP JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS CLASS AND THE PROF.....ON THE PLUS SIDE THOUGH HE CRACKS GOOD JOKES ONCE A WHILE!!
Great class, this guy is a hoot. I would never miss a class, in fact im going out of my way to take more of Bushcek's classes for comic releif from school. Not everyone gets his sense of humour, but those who do are in for a great class!
Yes, this guy is definately a hoot.
Professor Buschek is a GREAT man, and a GREAT professor. His classes are very interesting, he's a lot smarter than he may make you think...
great sense of humour.
This guy was a great prof. He was funny, excited about the materials and cares about his students. I wish i had room to take more of his classes. He is a truely dedicated prof!
Top Notch!
A very funny, and very aware guy, his class can seem somewhat confusing and there can seem to be a lot of information, but when exam times roles around, if you have your notes and you studied them, everything fits in and seems to make sense as you write the exam. He's a FUNNY guy! The class was never without laughs!
Take an elective with Buschek and it will be the highlight of your day - the guy's hilarious! In addition, his classes are easy, have a low workload (two group projects, a book report, and a final) and are informative. Engineers take note!
Sarcastic commentary abounds. Sometimes funny, but not professional. Often comes across a smug and disinterested. He has been outright mean to some students. Overall, I'm not too impressed. It is unclear what his goal for this course is (propagating his misery?). He generates little enthusiam for the topic...despite being quite knowledgable.
Quite possibly the WORST porf I have ever had. In the whole semester, I might have made 4 pages of notes from his stupid ramblings. His slides were far too involved to copy, and his project had absolutly no relevance to the class. I dont care what anyone else has said previously about him, but this guy is pathetic. avoid at all costs..
wasted time rambling and trying to find the light switch, very unorganized and lazy, obviously knows what he's talking about but doesn't present it clearly. he's a scatterbrain, tells the same stories multiple times. doesn't post his slides on the Internet, 25% of our mark from a project observing clouds, he marked poorly
Worst Prof ever...usless..never met a man more lazy in my life..why does he even teach he is useless...lectures are pointless and these classes have no relevence to anything in life...a big waste of time..horrible simply pathetic.
look forward to class
be careful with the exam, it was hard to study for, lots of stuff , and he is not clear what he wants you to know.
I have taken three classes with him (ISCI 1001, TSES 3001 and 3002). The class content becomes repetitive after a while. He is not very motivated but he encourages students to express their ideas and he respects them. His exams can be very difficult. He attempts to trip you on certain questions. Nice guy but I wouldn't recommend taking more than on

Excellent, my best professor for the term. Hilarious, interesting, sarcastic and relevant. If you into anything slighlty scientific you wll love this guy.
Really light lecturer. Picks and chooses what he teaches each year, has a lot of liberty in what he choose. Course isn't set in stone but he makes it interesting. Projects are a little weird, exam is easy though. You just have to listen and the course becomes a breeze.
The course is not difficult - fairly easy to do well. He teaches at a slower pace than other professors so he's easy to follow. He's clear and adds humor to the lectures. Overall, he's an average professor.
Brutal. Some people like this guy, I can't understand why. His assignments are recycled, lazy, and useless. Expect to do a grade 8 level book report and unclear unorganized group work. Avoid this guy like the plague.
Book report is simple, though it is only as interesting as the book you choose. Class is fun, but assignments seem out of left-field. I enjoyed this class very much, but I can understand why others may not. I preferred 3001 for subject material.
In general I like this guy: he's friendly, nice & laid back, you can tell he tries to bring new aspects into his class each year. That kind of makes some of his assignments... experimental. Like his instructions on how to do them: not always so clear. He likes assignin group work too much X__X. All the same he's an awesome guy!
He's a nice enough guy. The kind of guy you'd want as an uncle to see every once in a while at family holidays. Interesting too. But the assignments are total crap. The marking seems completely arbitrary, and the assignments are really confusing. Will marks off a 4 page assignments if it's not paginated! If you need an elective, look elsewhere.
The course material is fairly easy to understand. However, his exams which were done on WebCT will cancel out all of the studying and time in class that you spent in preparation. 120 fill in the blank questions on WebCT in a 2 hour period. He took sentences straight out of the text and removed a word and expected it to be known from recall. Brutal
He was a funny guy. Classes were great. But for being such a jovial guy in person, you'd imagine he'd be more congenial to questions about his project. 25% of the mark was on a group project, and if your group hadn't responded you would have to do their work as well.He was a bad grader. You'd get marks off for spelling mistakes for the online tests
I love this prof: he's funny, insightful and made me re-think a lot of my assumptions. Not a good course for people who like things cut-and-dry. Make sure you follow his assignment instructions EXACTLY (can be a stickler for details)
I took three of his classes. I agree that he is a funny man. He really would go in depth teaching us the materials for ISCI 1001, but with the TSES classes, it was more laid back. But he is very smart and you learn a lot from his classes.
He's an incredibly uninterested lecturer. I think he doesn't want to teach the stuff. Lecture slides are exact copies of the textbook (pictures and all) and the work doesn't actually challenge you in any way. He doesn't answer emails. He's a great guy. I like him. But I don't think he wants to teach the course.
He has a droning voice able to put anyone to sleep. there is no need to attend his classes because his slides are exact copies of the book. i think he is uninterested in the subject and doesn't want to teach it. he marks stuff late, takes points off for spelling mistakes. it's an easy course but really frustrating. if you can, take something else!
He's a funny, sarcastic guy, which makes him likeable, but his lectures are extremely lazy and he doesn't explain anything clearly. If you don't have a science or engineering background, you will be completely lost in this course. Also very nitpicky about irrelevant things like alphabetical order on exams.
Mailing it in every class.
Professor Buschek was kind of boring but his class is deffinitely an easy A. I barely attended classes but I read the book and it was actually very interesting. He gave practice quizzes for the midterm and exam and all of the questions given on those were on the midterm and exam. It's actually a pretty interesting class I'd reccomend taking it.
Knows a lot about his field, and a nice man, but extremely boring. Almost all of the students were on facebook (some even watching tv through headphones!). Has a super easy SWARM project which is an easy A, but the exams are difficult. Is not always clear, and gets off track easily.
He doesn't seem like he wants to be there. His exams are difficult to understand sometimes and he is very picky about little things. I would not take another course with him. This course is not an easy A as some people think
Class is beyond extreamly boring. He spends a long time on each subject, however that is exactly what he will test you on. His exams are not meant to trick you, if you go to class and take notes you will pass with flying colours. Very monotone, makes you want to sleep. Doesn't make you buy a textbook & grades easy
Really good professor. Grades and tests fairly. If you follow his clearly stated instructions there is no reason why you shouldn't get an A.
Professor Buschek is a really nice, funny professor. He is one of my favorite professors in university. I really enjoyed both TSES 3001 and 3002. I still remember what I learned. Plus, you don't need a textbook. Therefore, I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
John is an amazing professor, he literally wants you to get a good grade. No textbook required and if you attend class, you don't have an excuse for not getting an A. He is very funny, material is very interesting, his notes are very condensed/ self-explanatory and there is a lot of in class discussion so you always remember the material taught.
The teacher is clear and concise in all his explanations. If there are things he can't elaborate on he will not only mention it but will bring students to open their minds on certain elements.
John is extremely stubborn and will always answer with humour when asked a serious question. HIs TSES class is extremely interdisplinary, yet he presents it in a very linear fashion without taking about socioligical implications. Yet, without taking his lectures too seriously, he does still bring interesing subjects from time to time. Test are easy
Just study hard, memorize all terms especially those discussed in class... Keep up with the readings and do all the assignments they add up and boost your mark (20%) (easy points) ..Exam style is 'fill in the blank' therefore more practice for examination/memorization required... Good luck! I did enjoy most of his lectures!
Prof Buschek knows how to deliver info perfectly , his lectures are very interesting, I never felt bored in his class & most of the info are mentioned during the class. Oh, and the way he makes his slides, where did he learn to do that?!! The best slides ever So people with problems in note taking, ADHD or ESL, this course won't be a nightmare.
I love this man. He has amazing real world knowledge and experience. He is a great teacher, provides hands on assignments, and truly tests your knowledge of his courses.
Easy GPA booster. Both classes I've taken, I've had to do a book report and swarm project, they were very easy. Lecture's are dry but he brings in a lot of relevant examples and gets you thinking critically about the world.
Even though his lectures can be a bit dry, he's an awesome guy. All of the assignments and exams are clear and easy to understand if you've done all your studyingresearch. He also gave me a break when I had a mix-up with an assignment, so he's a very understanding person. Very good class to take as an elective!
Really great professor. I wouldam going to take a course with him again. Key to success in his class is to pay attention and participate in weekly assignments. You will learn a lot and have some good laughs too.
really nice person and reasonable on giving marks
He's a funny guy and it's clear he's really interested in the material. It's an easy grade if you watch the lectures and complete the projects.
Clear grading criteria, assignments are easier than riding a bike. Hand in something (right, wrong, in between) and get 100% of participation grade. The exam is 2 essay questions 30% each and 2022 multiple choice questions worth 40%. Excellent GPA booster!
Buschek is an interesting prof in a good way. He makes the classes interesting and the two assignments were simple enough. The tests were as well. I definitely recommend him for the future!
Can be vague sometimes, I haven't received any help or commentary as to how I could improve in my area of writing for this class. As a first year student, I did very well in all other classes and writing but found an incredibly different result in this class and struggled greatly.
Really easy class and none of the work is too difficult, he tries to keep things interesting but its kinda dry. I never went to class but he posts all his course notes online.
class was clear. it was an elective for me and i didn't regret taking it
He is a very great person. The lectures are interesting . I enjoyed the class but, I recommend to take notes by hands rather than a computer because there's a lot of information and pictures will be provided. Overall great professor, very funny and tries to make the class enjoyable
Very good prof. As long as you come to lectures and take notes you will get an A.
Droning voice with lots of use of the 'word' "uhh", although knowledgeable, seems very unorganized and has messy handwriting. Doesn't even bother to prepare a cumulative review before the exam or for any lecture notes. He creates his notes during the lecture.
Took online classes with him. Downloaded the lecture and sped them up by x1.5. Normal speed might make you fall asleep.
John is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he's teaching. If you go to class (or watch the lectures online) and take notes, it's not hard to get a good grade. Assignments are clearly set out, if done properly you'll get a good grade. Effort is key in this class, material isn't too difficult if you pay attention.
Assignments were straightforward. Horrible teaching skills and very rude to students if an answer was wrong. Had a bad attitude towards student who were not doing so well. However, it's an easy course if you follow the lectures.
Amazing prof, very knowledgeable and passionate, a pleasure to listen to. If you attend his lectures, you'll get an A.
I honestly really enjoyed his lectures; I enjoyed his sense of humour and his sarcasm, and we watched a lot of thoughtful documentaries and interviews. He provides a very unbiased opinion since he primarily discusses the work of other people. Exam asks very specific questions so you need to know the material thoroughly.
Very easy professor. You really only have to follow his lecture and instructions. HOWEVER, lectures will put you to sleep. If you are taking his course online and can't make it to campus then good luck getting a hold of him. He doesn't take phone calls and despite what the outline says, he doesn't respond to emails or anything on the forums
Pretty boring lectures, most time was spent with him writing and the screen showing a nice view of the top of his head. All the lecture material comes straight from the textbook (pretty much word for word), so save yourself the time and just read the book from your bed. Had one group project, where each group had 80 something people in it.
his classes are a bit dull, but he loves what he teaches & cares for students. he takes the time to write out notes during lectures to help students prepare for exams. his assignments and grading is clear and fair, people are hard on him but they shouldn't be. he is very accessible, and his fishing hat 10/10 overall great guy and god prof
An arbitrary marker with no clear patterns or reasons for his decisions. Also probably the most boring and dry lecturer I have ever listened to. Do yourself a favour and dont take one of his classes.
messy handwriting and kinda boring to listen to tbh but overall good!!
As an elective, I found his class to be not only interesting, but easy without feeling like its a joke. Admittedly his lectures are pretty slow, but he's actually hilarious. I just would show up every class and half pay attention, ask the occasional question, and do the (not at all hard) weekly participation. Would take another class
Honestly do not take his course. He is an arbitrary marker and will not provide a rubric. His lectures are extremely dry and at times feel irrelevant. Although he grades fair the description of assignments are vague and hard to follow. If you are going to take his course read the fine print of all assignments, especially formatting!
1. Most boring lecturer on the planet. I watch the VOD on 2x still speaks to slow. 2. Hand writes his notes while he is lecturing and his printing is not legible. WORST EVER. Wish i could upload a photo and show how brutal this is. 3. Stupidly easy assignments and then the final exam is 25 short answer and 3 long answer could destroy you
As a former mature student of Mr. Buschek's (i.e. an older person) I recognize the point at which someone's interest in their work has been sufficiently eroded that they are interacting with their environment by rote. "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens", namely, the adventure of retirement.
This course is awful and I would not recommend it to anyone. From reading the course description it sounded WAY more interesting than it actually is. He is an elderly man who is very dry and boring. The content will never benefit me in ANY way what-so-ever. The content is irrelevant, notes are hand written, and culearn page is very unorganized.
Professor Buschek is a funny and easy-going guy. His assignments in this class were very engaging and fun to take part in. He does write down all his notes as he lectures but the content is very interest and the top of his head is a wonderful sight to see.
Smart guy, very honest and well spoken. An ideal student for Dr. Buschek's classes should be patient and attentive to detail. The pace of class varies from slow to moderate, depending on the number of digressions. He heavily relied on CUL online to communicate expectations and posted all class notes there following the lectures.
Weekly participation assignments are easy. He is the most hilarious professor ever. I love attending his classes. His notes are very amazing, and he talks slow enough to take really good notes, and the fact that he writes them by hand, means that keeping up is easy.
One of the worst Professors Ive ever had in 4 years of university. He is lazy and lost passion for what he does. He just writes on a price of paper with a camera on it. Its an easy class if you do the readings. You learn from them not John. He states the obvious. Total waste of time. I shouldve taken a more engaging elective. Would rate as 0
I felt like I didn't get anything out of this class, really regret taking it. Watched all the lectures in 2x speed and it still felt too slow. The assignments weren't very stimulating and rubrics for the participation and other work was confusing and vague. The content has some potential, but the lecture delivery and note taking is distracting.
This class was easy, but I learned nothing. I regret wasting an elective on this nonsense. Evaluation was 2 papers, a group project (50 people, one project, all online... yeah, that's a great idea...), optional final and WEEKLY participation assignment. Watch lectures on 2* speed and try to stay awake.
Easy GPA booster. Don't need to watch lectures. Consisted of weekly participation assignments (5 very easy questions that you can answer with one sentence), 2 short papers on a technology of your choice, and a group project. Although the rubrics were a bit vague, Dr. Buschek gives great feedback and is a very generous marker.
Class and assignment management is absolute chaos
His lectures consisted of sharing his screen and going from websites to Youtube videos - very low effort. Participation assignments were alright but you were heavily docked for referencing errors. The group assignment was ridiculous. The teams consisted of 30-40 students each. The exam questions were all pulled from the participation assignments
Very rigid on referencing, for some questions if you don't give the exact same excerpt from his notes, you get marks deducted. Final exam requires a lot of memorizations.
The professor's teaching approach falls short. They mechanically recite article notes without interacting with students or addressing their queries. Additionally, they appear to relish penalizing students, even for minor citation slip-ups. Regretfully, attendance in the class is dismal, with only a handful of students out of 60 bothering to attend.
John is a great professor. He is a polite professor. He helps students out. His feedback is good. His knowledge in technology, society, and the environment is great.
AVOID HIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS. Lectures are rambles on subjects that have nothing to do with the course material. He speaks quiet without slides. Makes GIGANTIC groups (25+) for a project and refuses to take criticism about how disorganized his class truly is (how are you supposed to coordinate with 20 other people). In class assignments are jokes.
Most disorganized and pointless course I have ever taken. Refuses to act on any feedback provided. creates gigantic 25+ person group projects and grades all people involved equally. Ridiculous amount of AI involvement, all for pointless reasons. His class was a stressful waste of time.
Signed up for TSES 3001 and received a bad version of 3002 mixed with a lot of AI slop and an overpopulated group project. several class deliverables were comparing the output of GPT 4 and 5... never class debates very little room for expression and exploration, if your topic of choice doesn't align with his hyper fixations it'll be a bad grade.
Just no. Attending the class itself had nothing to do with the course (as we will be doing class activities such as playing around with co-pilot and gpts) and the lectures are pre-recorded and almost 2 hours each so preparing for the final exam will be difficult as it contains every lecture which was not discussed in class.
