Eh, proper English gent- has interesting info but expects too much for GenEd
he acted like a nice guy, but he got on my nerves. Thinks too highly of himself
Too much reading. That's all we did was read and write papers
be nice to J.J Butt...he's hard, but interesting. Overall good- upper level.
one of the best history teachers at the school
Really interesting. I enjoyed his class. Not a lot of work.
Good teacher, funny, not too much work... dont have to read books, booknotes
he knows a lot of interesting stuff... just keep him talking and the class flys!
arrogant, but definitely one of the more interesting english classes out there.
very interesting lectures, but not helpful in writing papers.arrogant but nice
Awesome guy and teacher. One of the funnist classes I took.
arrogant as hell, boring (especially at 8 a.m.), attendance counts
Didn't teach, didn't learn anything, too many books, too arrogant, waste of time
No Comments
Great guy... great lectures! fun, class goes by quickly!
For someone who doesn't like history, I actually liked this class a lot. He makes it interesting. 2 tests- 1 open notes, the other take-home/open notes. Historiography and annotated biblio- other than that there is no other work. Attendance policy.
Really knowledgable and always intersting to listen to. Didn't have to read books for papers, easy grader.
A great teacher, knows his stuff...very helpful and understanding..he makes a boring class into a very interesting one..not an easy A but if you work hard u can get atleast a B ..he likes challenging questions...
GREAT teacher. Makes this boring class very funny and easy to attend. I didn't read a book all year and should be getting a B+. Invest in sparknotes and answer questions in class, its easy.
avoid this guy like the plauge. he acts like hes more intelligent than he is. loves to hear himself talk. his name is butt for goodness sake. AVOID
Best class I've taken at JMU. He's a great professor, gives interesting lectures and comments during discussions. Papers are time consuming but easy. Not all the books are good, but still an excellent class!

This class is really easy to sit through because Prof butt makes the discussions really intersting and really fun! It is a true discussion and everyone can say anything they want. The books are actually interesting to read.
dr. butt is great! he's extremely intelligent and knows his stuff. you'll love this class if you like to read and speak up in class. so far, my most rewarding class at jmu.
soo intelligent and great sense of humor. his class was always interesting bc they were usually discussions. graded papers a little harder than i would've liked, but the fact that my grade might not be so high does not take away from me loving this class!
this guy is truly awesome. an easy grader on papers, & the class is just one big discussion. no busy work. students take turns leading the discussion on different days(u get paired up w/ someone & u each come up w/ some questions to ask the class).
I loved Dr. Butt. His class was my favorite. It's just reading books and discussing them-piece of cake-plus 4 papers. Definitely take him, he is an interesting fellow with adoreable bowties.
He is an awesome teacher! He really knows what he's teaching. I learned so much information in his class....its definitely the best history class I have ever taken at JMU!
The best gen-ed teacher I have had in my 4 years at JMU. For once....a FUN GEN-ED CLASS!!! If you like discussion this is the class for you...it is entirely discussion (and papers...which aren't so bad). But grade is just essays...and no tests!

I really, really enjoy Dr. Butt's class. I just wish I had did better on the essays. That aside u don't have to read the books except to find quotes and the class is very discussion oriented. I'd HIGHLY reccomend him!
He is a funny teacher that makes the discussions interesting, but is a tough grader on the papers. I consider myself a good writer and i got straight C's for all my papers, nevertheless he is a great guy and the class is very cool and relaxed.
He's a brilliant lecturer, and you'll have a lot of fun just listening to him speak. The assignments, reading or otherwise, always have a clear purpose, and Dr. Butt is really willing to go out of his way to help if you need it. An EXCELLENT professor.
great professor! lectures are very entertaining. never read 1 book and still got a B and loved the class, b/c of dr. butt.
Absolutely wonderful prof. One of my faves at JMU. Extremely clear lectures, really good story teller. A little cocky, but very easy to like him. No tests, just papers. Definitely worth taking.
Dr. Butt rocks my socks! he is incredible! the call is easy, just go and take notes while he talks, awesome lectures, really funny, super interesting...altho, my roomie thinks you have to be a history major to get all the jokes! TAKE HIM! ITS ALL ABOUT BUTT!
interesting geneds are rare, and it's even rarer to find one that you truly love. this class is the exception. without a doubt, dr. butt's class is my favorite this semester! class discussions are enlightening and enjoyable, and the papers allow for subjective analysis. i highly recommend this class
I LOVE BUTT :) :)
Very smart, wants students to understand and think outside of the box, sometimes he can be an anal butt, (pun intended).
Thinks he is the man....but damn he is the man
Great guy, could be an awful boring class but he lets you take the books where you want them to go.Knows that the meaning behind the plot is whats important and not stupid details. Interesting and enlightening, surprisingly enough!
butt is great. just read the books and write the papers. i got a 100 average. he doesn't care about stupid details, just wants you to see the big picture. definitly not one of those nit picky teachers. really down to earth.
My favorite class this semester... one of the best professors ive had at JMU... knows what he is talking about and extremly intellegent ..while down to earth TAKE THIS CLASS
You will be lucky to get more than trivia out of him (not all of which is even related to British History). 4 words: forty work annotated bibliography. he practically dashes out of the room after class
Dr. Butt is very helpful...but the 40 book annotated bibliography is pretty tough. The tests are open note, open book. Class is sometimes boring, and he goes off on tangents. However, if you like history, youll like Butt!
Dr. Butt is very intelligent, sweet, and I love the stories from his youth. The whole class is discussion, 4 papers, and a presentation on whatever book you want. He actually makes you want to come to class!
His class is only 4 papers and a presentation. However, the class is pretty boring. There are other classes better than this one.
Dr. Butt is so cute. He wears little bowties to class and he's really funny. The student led class lectures are SOOOOOO boring, but the papers are easy and the class is painless.
Dr. Butt is the man! Definitely take him. While students are the ones initiating the discussions, Butt will chime in with original stories that are great. He really gets one interested in the books and their historical context. BUTT FOR PRESIDENT!
Uninteresting, boring,
Serisouly - take this class with Dr. Butt. He's really chill and there are only 4 three-page papers for the semester, plus your final presentation thing. He makes the class really interesting and tells funny stories. quite an enjoyable class!! there is a good amount of reading (novels) though.
Dr. Butt is a great professor. The whole class is discussion. He takes attendance, but I really don't mind going to class because it's interesting. There are 4 papers and a presentation. You can pretty much write about whatever you want on the papers too. I'm not the best writer, and I've got an A in the class so far. I highly recommend him.
There's a reason why other professors in the history department call him Jack Butt instead of John Butt. He is NOT an easy grader at all- he will pick out small errors and mark you down about 10 points.
Class is very interasting b/c Butt knows a lot about the subject. 4 Papers a presentation and No final; however, he is a HORRIBLE grader who takes 10 points off for no reason.. Grades come out of nowhere and he never explains what you did wrong.
The books are good choices, there are no tests, but the papers are tough to get a good grade on. when I read the books I got Cs on the papers, and when I read spark notes I got A-....tell me the incentive there. Attendance policy.
this class is amazing - it's not too much work (four 3-page papers, then a presentation at the end which you get to pick your book) and he makes the class interesting (i didn't mind going at all). definitely take this class w/ dr butt - he is the man!!!
This guy is brilliant. He knows everything that happened in history and incorporates it well into the books you read. He is a slightly tough grader but his class is certainly worth while. His stories are great and you got to figure with a name like Butt he must have a solid sense of humor. TAKE THE CLASS.
His class is fun to go to, I never missed a day. The 40 source annotated bib. is a pain, but is an experiance everyone should have to do. Loved going to class, because you never knew what he would say.
this guy is an awesome professor and yeah you have to do some work for his class but hey it is well worth it. i want to go to St. Andrews with him when he takes students there sometime because i know he would show everyone a good time. a nice guy that can also pull off the bow-tie look without a hitch.
Awesome man loved his class. extermely smart and really nice esp if you go to see him one on one. take class with this man. he rocks the bowties.
He's really nice. He cares about his students. As long as you make an effor to talk in class, and you can write a decent paper you will deffinately get a "B". He does not have a Final Exam, all you have to do is read 9 books, which arn't that bad.
Fun lectures, Takes Attendance, However 9 books in one semester is a little rough, and he grades the 4 papers tough...I was told all 4 times I did not state or discuss my thesis and got no better than a 75 on any paper (im an ISAT major thesis are all I do)... Do not take this teacher unless you can fully devote your life to reading his books!!
JJ is awesome! We had such a fun class. I would take this professor again in a heartbeat. Take his classes!!
Dr. Butt is great. Class was always fun and the project wasn't bad at all. We had one test--instead of a final, he held Victorian Tea at his house, and we just had to dress up, make a Victorian food, etc. I'm taking another of his classes in the fall, and really recommend him.
This is a pretty good class, but I took it during maymester and was a lot of work still. You have to read 9 books. I didn't read one page and used sparknotes but you do have to buy the books to use page # citations. 4 papers on the same topic are pretty easy although he rarley gives A's. Lots of good life advice and thinking in this class is good
You have to read a lot but the books are good. This man is really smart and claims outlandish things life he can get from Jackson to Cosco in 18 minutes. Hes pretty pompous but he knows what hes talking about.
Professor Butt was a great professor. He's very smart and willing to help if you go to him. Finding team to read all the books can be hard but papers weren't hard and it was relatively easy to get an A. He is a great professor.
Incredibly pompous, bit of a closet-liberal, but still very knowledgeable and funny. Pretends to hold class "discussions" which really just end up with him speaking for most of the period. Tough grader but not unfair. I'd take him again if I had the chance.
Dr, Butt is difficult but has been my favorite teacher/professor ever. He is extremely interesting and is always providing new insight. I was always interested in what he had to say, as well the other students, I LOVED his class. It's hard but worth it. Read and meet with him and you'll do fine.
I believed Dr. John Butt to be the most pompous, arrogant man I've ever met. He comes off as though he only wishes for a simple life. He plays classical music every morning-yes I know who Vivaldi and John Williams are- I don't need you quizzing me at 8:00 in the morning. If you want to live up to your hero notoriety, be humble not a jackass
Very knowledgeable but pompous and arrogant. Pretty boring and wish I had taken a different class. Wasn't the worst I've had though.
this was by far my favorite class at jmu. professor butt is really chill and tells the greatest stories. if you have any talent in writing take this class and it will boost your gpa. if you can't write well, i wouldn't suggest it
He is AAAAWEESOME!!! take him!! kept me entertained and interested the whole time!
TAKE THIS CLASS! Dr.Butt is great, lectures are really interesting and entertaining. Grades include one page summaries of readings, a paper&presentation, midterm and final. You're allowed 4 absences. I always looked forward to this class.
BEST TEACHER EVER!! He tells the greatest stories, and really make you think! You can just tell hes a great man, very cultured. The class consisted of 8 books, 4 papers and some discussion classes. My favorite teacher and class here at JMU
Dr. Butt's section for this is Victorian England and it's such a great class! Your grade is comprised of one page summaries of the book chapters, a midterm, paper and presentation and a final presentation. You watch a couple movies and we had a guest speaker about Jack the Ripper. Take this class!
8 books, 4 essays. Overall, this class is a relief to attend because you can sit back relax and discuss the books. He will attempt to explain some of his views on society; some of which I disagree with completely (one being society is only held together because we fear punishment). Interesting & very nice professor ,but a tad counter culture.
Dr. Butt was one of my favorite professors last semester! He's a great lecturer, and he's really interested in what he's teaching. Has a really kooky sense of humor, which I love, but some more sensitive people might object to. He definitely isn't afraid to say what he thinks, and he seems kind of like an old hippie, which I also find awesome. He also wears bowties. Just that fact would make me give him at least four stars. He's also really helpful if you need it. Take the class!
Dr. Butt is absolutely hilarious. He makes literature so interesting, even to people who normally wouldn't appreciate it. All you have to do is read the books and write papers. He's a fair grader, and I would absolutely recommend him!
If you're taking ghum 200, you want this professor! One of my favorites, hands down. He's had the most interesting life and spends a lot of class time talking about it. He also makes the material very interesting. You only write 4 papers and do easy final project. Not hard at all to get an A. Just do the reading and you're fine.
Dr. Butt is awesome! Definitely take Victorian England, such a cool class! 1 paper, open book/note midterm, and the most fun youll ever have with a final! You read a couple novels, not terribly interesting but you get through them. The topic itself is really interesting though, and Dr. Butts bow ties are worth going to class alone! Take this class!
Dr. Butt is awesome! He is so passionate about English history. He wears bowties every single day and keeps class interesting with personal anecdotes from his time learning in England. One research paper, open note midterm, and a final presentation. Have to turn in daily notes from the reading, but it is not too bad!
He was awesome. I didn't read the books and got an A (I spent a great deal of time on the papers). I had absolutely no interest in the subject before the class but the classroom discussions were so interesting I went back and read a few of them (On the Road in particular).
Dr.Butt is the definition of the JMU Spirit. He is one of the most helpful, caring professors. There are precis due after every reading, but are easy grade boosters. His mid-term is an open note/book essay, so it's doable, and his final is show and tell. If you get the chance, take this class! He is always willing to help, and is great!
If you have the opportunity to take one of Dr. Butt's classes, do it. He is fascinating to listen too and the class is not very difficult. Write your precis and admire the bowtie and you will do extremely well. Best class so far at JMU.
TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES! He loves what he teaches, but grades according to the level of which he believes the student can achieve. Listen to the lecture, take notes, and stay on the work. Really a great teacher. LOVE HIM!
Dr. Butt is one of the nicest professors I've come across. He's very intelligent and sometimes goes off topic, but always manages to relate it to the subject we were SUPPOSED to be talking about. He's very exacting when it comes to grading, though. KNOW YOUR CHICAGO/TURABIAN.
Dr. Butt loves the topic of Victorian England and his lectures are generally not boring at all. He's easy on grading assignments, but harder with essays/papers. He's going to be willing to help you along if you show enthusiasm.
He's terrible. Grades very harshly on the papers that have no criteria. I've gotten an A in every english class since high school but on every paper I turn into him he gives it a low grade. Office hours he told me my paper was perfect for turn in but when I turned it in it still got a low grade
Class is easy, and all the novels are on sparknotes or easy to find on google, so no reading is necessary. He sucks when it comes to grading the final presentations. He includes them as part of participation and does not give you info on how he graded it. And he takes off participation points even if you are excused from class.
This is by far my favorite class of the semester. Dr Butt is an awesome teacher and always has an interesting story. He knows practically everything there is to know about Victorian history. You have about 20 HW assignments (chapter summaries that take 30 mins tops) and only 1 test. But be careful, he judges the main project kinda harshly.
Butt is a fun professor. He knows a lot about what he is teaching, but he grades SOOO harshly...it's insane! All of his tests are essays, but he expects very specific details that were barely mentioned in class. I would recommend another professor if possible.
Dr. Butt knows what hes talking about, but his tests are very hard, they are essay tests and he gives you no info on what the question is for the essay.
Great guy until you get your test scores back. Very harsh grader. Test material is extremely broad and you have to do a lot of the learning yourself. Says test was easy even though he's "never given out this many Fs." The book is terribly dry but it's half of the test. Not easy A. B or C with decent effort.
This class is more of a seminar than a lecture, and Dr. Butt keeps it very interesting. He has 5 main grades. Homework is easy 100. Participation isn't hard as long as you talk. The paper and final project isn't hard. Expect to get a C on the midterm and not effect your grade. Definitely worth not having to take any Cluster Two classes!
I would not recommend taking him for this class. His grading is extremely difficult and test grades are heavily weighted in this class. If you don't do well on one of the test, it will impact your grade heavily.
Dr. Butt is an excellent professor, I really would love to take another one of his classes. He may be a bit full of himself, but he uses this to keep the attention of such a big class. His does a lecture as supplement to the textbook readings, and the grades are made of 2 tests, 4 short papers, and the final. FANTASTIC PROFESSOR, TAKE HIM!!!
Extremely tough grader especially for a GenEd. He is really nice guy and knows what he is talking about but his tests are essays. You have to do well on all of them because he only gives out 3 tests and it really impacts your grade if you do poorly on one.
Found his lecture style very confusing and ineffective. He seemed to focus on very specific parts of each section of history, while essentially ignoring everything else. This was especially confusing because the class covers such a long period of time. You'll need to do a lot of textbook reading to be able to succeed in this class.
TAKE THIS CLASS. Dr. Butt is literally one of the coolest professors you will ever take. He has done literally everything you can think of and tells great stories. He is really knowledgable about Victorian England and I wasn't looking forward to this class and he made it really interesting.
At first, Dr. Butt may come across slightly intimidating; however, if you go to his office hours, he is always willing to help. His lectures are very interesting, and he is very knowledgeable about the subject. He is a pretty harsh grader on the paper and midterm, but there are participation and homework grades that can bring up your grade.
Dr. Butt has so many incredible stories to share - he's hilarious, and ready to joke with the class. He goes on many a tangent in class. Your grade comes from 20 reading assignments, an essay midterm, a final project, and a research paper. It's doable, and worth it to not have to take the cluster 3 gen eds.
The class was kinda boring, but it is a pretty easy class. There isnt too much work, and most of it is based on completeness.
Dr. Butt is a fantastic teacher; extremely intelligent, funny, and kind. I took him for the Global Cities Honors seminar. He is a tough grader, but also extremely fair, so if you put in the work you can get an A or a B. The nice thing about this class was that we had no quizzes, only one-page responses to readings. Super interesting class overall!
Dr. Butt is awesome! He knows everything about everything and his lectures are really interesting. There's no quizzes, only summaries on the readings graded for completion. The midterm was open notes and the final is a hands on project. There is one research paper, but if you put in the work you'll do fine. Great class and Dr. Butt made it fun!
Great professor, definitely would take again! He has the best stories and can get off track pretty easily. One pretty work intensive research paper, midterm is open note and the final is a project. Be prepared to not do well on the midterm but still be okay in the class. Participation does matter, so make sure to ask questions! Really great guy!
I took Dr Butt's Daily Life in Victorian England. We had 3 or 4 reading books along with 2 textbooks. His class was okay for being early in the morning & he made it interesting. Our final was a project where we had to make something or teach something to the class from the time period, that was nice & was a nice grade booster
Absolutely coolest professor. He knows everything about everything and is just a cool guy. Your grade is based off of 4 papers (comparing 2 different novels you read) and attendance/participation/presentation. Does not grade too harshly on the papers-as long as you have grammatically sound writing, you will get on A or B
For the literature GenEd, I highly recommend Dr. Butt's HUM 200 class. He teaches 'western classics' and almost all of the novels he chooses are somewhat thought-provoking and make for good discussion. Lots of reading, understandably, and participation matters. Four papers and a presentation. Overall pretty interesting and knowledgeable guy.
20% subjective section of your grade. Read 8 books for the 4 essays, each essay is on comparing two books. No textbook except all of the books, relatively cheap. Then you end with a presentation on one book. Not a very hard class but you have to talk a lot and attendance is taken seriously. I personally wouldn't take again. Thought he was rude.
Dr. Butt is hilarious, tells great stories, and cares about his students and the subject matter. He made our class very unique. It was all reading, papers, and discussion. I really liked the class and I would highly recommend taking Dr. Butt.
I really think the world of John Butt and of HUM200!! The way he facilitates the class creates this beautiful community that is essentially a book club. Read the books! Get the most out of your education. If you bring your paper ideas to office hours, he loves to talk through them. By far, my favorite class I've ever taken at JMU, cannot say enough
This is for HUM200. He makes you buy 8 novels and theres no exams only papers. You talk about completely irrelevant information every class and he ALWAYS talks 15 minuets over the end of the class for no reason.
Dr. Butt by far is the best professor that JMU has. I had him for HIST 381 and now for 477. Not a tough grader. Discussion in is important for it counts as a 10-20% of you grade so attendance is important. There are no exams!! you have one research paper and the final is a on-hand project. (food, clothing, music, anything from the studied era.)
Dr. Butt is a great professor. He allows the class a lot of freedom in the discussion but keeps everything on track. For Hum 200 you have to read 9 books, write 4 papers, and do 1 presentation. It's a lot of work for a gen ed, but the class is worth it. If you can make a thesis, he won't kill you on the papers.
Dr. Butt is amazing. He knows his stuff and is very interested in sharing what he knows. Pay attention and participate and you'll do well. Loves talking about Brexit and European history. Cares about you and will work with you.
LOVE HIM> VERY CLEAR GRADING CRITERIA JOKES ABOUT LAST NAME
Really nice guy, but I can see how people can see him as cocky. This is an honors course so expect to do honor level work. easy to work with and also easy get an A. Just do your work and ask one or two questions every class and don't go on your phone a lot.
JJ Butt? The absolute BOY. 4 essays, 1 "final" presentation. Super easy class if you know how to write decently. Each essay you compare and contrast 2 books, 4 pages max length. GO TO HIS OFFICE HRS BEFORE TURNING IN YOUR ESSAY! He is super helpful. One of my fave profs at JMU- def the easiest prof for this cluster. TEAM DR BUTT FOR LYFE.....
Hands down favorite professor I've had. Graded on 4 papers, really easy if you go to hum just to figure out the lay out he likes, and "participation", aka just go to class and speak some because all class is is discussion. He has the most interesting stories he'll randomly tell which makes you want to show up to class anyways. TAKE HIM!
He's a great professor, just a little pretentious. You read 8 books and write 4 essays comparing two at a time. You also present a book at the end of the semester but it's super easy. You do well on the essays if you read at least half of the book and have basic grammar skills. He's funny and has amazing life stories, super glad I took this class!
Butt is super cool and a great professor. You have to go to class and participate to do well in the class but he's so interesting you'll want to go to hear his stories. The whole class is one big discussion of literature its cool
This man could have had a prospurous career in the adult-entertainment industry. Such a shame he became a real Dr.
The only problem I had was that he wasnt clear with what with how he graded papers. But it wasnt a bad class.
His online class is mediocre at best. Every 2 weeks you read two books, write a large paper, and answer 36 discussion questions. All his lectures are recorded and offer no semblance of help either to the discussion or the papers. He's also a unclear grader and doesn't offer constructive criticism for his grades. Do not take this class online.
I personally did not like this class. Every two week you have to read one of eight books, there is books discussion which is 30+ discussion each with 6 in-depth questions. on top of that 8 discussion lecture videos. four papers essay each about a thousand words and a book presentation for the finals.
I had to drop this class because his constant personal attacks were giving me chronic depression. 0/10 would recommend this man
Dr. Butt's class is certainly a workload. Throughout the semester, we only had one week of rest in between reading, and especially towards the end of the course the books are a lot longer. There is a lot of discussion, but it's not too difficult. The main takeaway from this class is that there's pretty much work to do all the time.
Dr. Butt is easily one of my favorite professors this semester. His style of teaching may be abnormal, but if as long as you participate in this class, you will get a decent grade. Going to class is very important, however. Although there is a decent amount of reading outside of class, if you put the effort in you will be rewarded.
Prof. Butt is a very solid choice for this class. Pretty much the whole grade is essay-based, and you have to read a lot. The classes are usually discussions of the novels, and he does take attendance. There's a lot of work outside the classroom, and you have to put in work, but he does help with feedback. He's a tough grader, but it's manageable.
Do not pay attention to the other reviews... this class was terrible. Professor Butt was the toughest grader I've had at JMU and was extremely boring. Honestly a pointless class because he made you turn in papers before you discussed the books and didn't give hardly any feedback on your essays (which are basically your entire grade)
