This person is unable to convey information. Very confusing. Completely unable to explain simple calculator use and functions, I had to drop the class. My advice to you if you wish to learn, is to choose another teacher.
The first week he can be intimidating. Stick with it! He really cares about students and will help anyone. He really wants each student to understand how the math works and sometimes it can be confusing. After our first test he actually called each of us up to his desk went over our problem areas and gave us the opportunity to correct our test
total jerk don't take this guy he sucks at conveying material and can't articulate his points you are sure to fail
Awesome teacher, Very down to earth, willing to help!! If you went to class it was easy to pass. He would also tell you what would be on a test the class before...AWESOME LOVED HIM!
I really enjoyed his class, math 171. First, he is very funny. He loves math and is a very passionate teacher who’s always glad to help. This is math, so you got to do the work. The people who wrote that he is unclear probably didn't do the homework -- so they were lost. He is an easy grader as well. Do the work and you shall get an A
Easy professor. Attend every class and you will pass. I got an A in this class. Very willing to help you if you want to help yourself succeed.
Professor Callaghan is extremely helpful. he's really funny and he makes you think. I had know idea that I could actually understand math until I had him as a teacher.
This was a great class. The Professor was easy to understand and to get along with. You will learn even if you don't want to. That's not a bad thing.
Professor Callaghan was one of the better math teachers I have had. He uses the book but assigns problems that are specific to the matherial. He is really helpful. Like with most things you do need to work hard and do the homework. Great teacher, really funny.
DOES NOT EXPLAIN STEPS VERY WELL TO UNDERSTAND THE ENTIRE PROCESS OF ASSISGNMENTS, IM NOT A MATH MAJOR.
He is the bomb teacher, get to know him and he will take the time to make sure your doin well in his class!
As long as you show up to class and do the work assigned very easy teacher. Will go the extra mile if needed. He tells you what to expect on tests and quizes and will help while taking them.
Prof Callaghan is the best math professor I have ever had! He is extremely helpful, and truly cares that we learn the material. I need to take two more math courses and I hope to take them both with him. If you need to take a math course, he is the man!
for new student he does not take the time to help in understanding the lessons
I am not really into math but taking this class with this professor was the best thing I did. He is a great teacher and very funny!!
Mr. Callaghan is REALLY GOOD GUY. I took MAT 137 with him during a summer session and it wasn't that he was bad, it's that this course has way too much content to be packed into one summer session. If you don't understand something then you just get left behind b/c there's no time to stop for individual students who are struggling.
The most rude/insensitive prof. The 1st wk of class my grandfather passed away&his services were during classtime.I emailed him to let him know,no response. Asked him in person if he got my email-he yelled at me made me cry&had no sympathy whatsoever.Had to drop class.told me he wd give me 0's for all wrk i missed bc funeral&wake.HORRIBLE&hearless.
I got an A in his class because he is a good teacher. He would constantly help his students with tests and other problems. He doesn't collect homework and he types up all the class notes and hands them out. I would take his class again.
As I sit here and do my last homework for this teacher, I realize just how much I don't understand. I have no idea where to begin. He does not explain steps well and often gets off track in the middle of a lesson making it hard to focus on one subject. He's very rude, very arrogant, and very self centered. Most aggrovating class I've ever taken.
If you don't want to work to learn, don't take this class. The syllabus is clear of expectations; homework optional (but recommended), attendance mandatory. I've always hated math, but Callaghan was excellent explaining material on a practical level. Nice, reasonable guy, too. I actually look forward to taking my next required math course with him.
Loved Prof Callaghan. Definitely a fun personality and enthusiastic about math. Took during accelerated summe sess and got an A (and i hate math!). Practice exams nearly identical to actual exams. Don't be shy to ask for help, q's in class (he LOVES that and will be forever on your side for speaking up). Definately recommend!
Best math instructor at Gateway - really learned alot this summer! I was so worried about this course but am so grateful to have had him. Prof Callaghan - THANK YOU!
Prof Callaghan is great - I was so worried about taking calculus, but knew from day one all would be ok! He is extremely bright, engages the class and exceptionally helpful to all students. THANK YOU!
Prof Callahan helped me understand math, not just memorize the formulas. I can apply the skills to everything now instead of just learning for this particular class. Very fun, very enthuastic
Great guy goes outta his way to hElp u !!!!!
Prof Callaghan is the BEST! I am taking more math classes because of him. I want to eventually take calculus, but will wait until he teaches it!
I don't know why he got such bad reviews... My experience with him was great! He managed to cram an hour and a half worth of material in just 50 minutes. Somewhat difficult to understand but if you ask him for help he'll help you! Very funny and informative. Just be sure to apply yourself and you'll get a B easily.
This guy is tops! he is upbeat and makes me want to learn more! helpful and very understanding. will take more classes with him and have recomended him to others! its math so you cant get out of homework but it is never too hard and he will go over it in detail if you need help as long as you do it you get a good grade!
BEST MATH TEACHER EVER!!!! Professor Callaghan makes me want to go to a math class. He makes math easier to understand and shows you step by step how to do it. He is a wonderful teacher who knows how to reach his class! He is very helpful. I will follow him to the next level math class and have followed him from my last math class he is that good!
really good and easy teacher.gets distracted and starts telling jokes and family drama during class.Reviews before tests.doesnt check/grade homework!
A pleasure being in his class, very helpful, he wants you to learn, he puts you at ease by telling home stories, he does not embrass you, just come to CLASS, you won't regret it
Best Professor! Very nice down to earth person, makes learning fun. He really cares if you learn, and will go the extra mile to help you. Take his clss.
By far the best math teacher I've ever had. He knows what it's like to be intimidated, burned out, tired, etc... still makes his classes interesting and and fun. I learned a lot from this guy. Who'd think math could be fun?
John Is awesome, great teacher and bends over backwards for his students. I had him last year and made things very clear, his math class was a breeze because he explained everything so well.
He is a nice person but tis teaching of statistics 167 is really confusing. He try but its difficult to even come up with questions to ask.
A 5 credit math course was terrifying, but Callaghan made it awesome. He would just as frustrated WITH me (not AT me) if I couldn't understand a concept. He goes above and beyond to help-but try your best, too. He can relate to nontraditional students (he has a very inspring story). Great guy. Funny, too! Take his class & ask questions!
This man is AMAZING!!!!! One of the MOST intelligent and Funny men I have ever met!
Easiest professor, very lenient with grading and excellent at his job. He is super easy to follow and will explain things 100 times until you get it. If you're looking for an easy A, take this class.
OMG he should be crowned the god of math. I took this stat class before but never got to the bottom of it until I had his class. His way of forcing us to think to find the answers is amazing and makes it stick to your mind. Never go pass a subject before he makes sure that everybody's got it, even the dumest of dums. Love his jokes and stories.
Seriously, Callaghan is the man! He helped me out soooo much with math its ridiculous. He makes EVERYTHING easier to understand and tries his best to make sure everyone gets what going on. Plus he makes the class fun by telling jokes and personal anecdotes which makes it easier to like the class overall. Bottom line, TAKE THIS CLASS IF NEEDED!
He makes sure his students understand the material before moving on to the next chapter. Very clear and to the point. No math class is going to be easy but it definitely helps if you have a professor like Callaghan.
Class was overall okay, all you had to do was show up to EVERY class and you would get an average of a C, if you did good on your test your grade would go higher. Just don't talk while he talks, he will embarrass you in front of the entire class. Other then that, I would recommend him. Good Luck!
John is a very nice guy he is funny and is always willing to help however his teaching method is not for everyone. He is very intelligent but he goes way too fast, doesn't explain how he got answers yet expects you to know everything. Doesn't have the best handwriting, it is difficult to write notes. Not an easy class he doesn't simplify it either.
Found his class confusing & unorganized! His demeanor towards his students was condescending and sometimes outright rude. He was not very helpful with questions; in fact, he turns students away during office hours when he's not in the mood to teach??
Had to withdraw from the class. I didnt like the way he taught, and he was kind of rude. He uses a projector to teach, and half the time you can't even see. His handwriting is very sloppy, so he shouldn't even be writing notes in the first place. The good thing is, he makes sure everyone understands before continuing. I would recommend someone else
Callghan is RUDE! I do not recommend anyone to take him for 137. He insist that there is no such thing as a stupid question, but when you ask one he treats you like you're stupid. I typically leave class confused because his attitude scares be to ask any sort of question.
Callaghan is just a complete mess. He is rude, lazy, and unorganized. He starts to do a problem and does't even finish it so you have to pretend like you know how he got the answer because if you ask him a question he makes you look like a complete dummy in front of the class. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS.
He struggled teaching Statistics as much as we struggled trying to learn it, he was very nice to us and helpful but the way he teaches is kind of confusing and all over the place.
I have taken Callaghan for 4 math classes. His class is very difficult but worth it in the end.he is the most generous professor I have ever had.If you are trying, he takes notice&that helps your final grade a lot. ALWAYS available for extra help.Really loves math.MUST go to class. LOTS of clear notes. only grades test, not hw. all around great guy.
I think Mr Callaghan has trouble teaching this subject but I don't think it's easy to teach so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Very funny and witty. He wants all his students to succeed and if you go to class and show your effort you will pass.
Great professor! Always had class, he was always on the up even with the latest class. Definitely take another one of his courses again.
Prof. Callaghan may understand it but does not have any really good way to convey it to the students. Notes are pretty non existent, and packets of homework problems with answers provided, problem is he never goes back and completely explains how to get to the answers. If you endure to the end you'll probably do okay. Read book, taught myself.
He is the WORST teacher ever!!! DON’T TAKE IT with this prof!!!!!!! He is mean and make the class confusing
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!!! he is so mean and rude. Went to him for extra help and he ended up yelling at me for NO reason, I left room crying and his response to it was " yea go." DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
Worst Professor I ever had. He is condescending and down-right rude. If you asked him a question, He will insult you in front of the class. He teaches for himself and not the class He uses projector to teach but His awful writing is nothing but scribbles,it hard to take note. Avoid taking this professor; but if you do get ready to teach yourself.
This semester I had to drop Professer Callaghan's class because he was all over the place, I never understood what was going on! I believe he has adult ADHD because you could say squirrel and he would be off topic for 15-20 mnutes. He has a bad attitude. I tried to talk to him one day before class and he said please do not talk to me before class!!!!! It was either fail the class or withdraw. Hopefully next semester I will get a better professor for math.
Had to also drop the class. The whole experience felt like driving to distant locations with a GPS that just didn't work. The class was all over the place and when a test was given there were no prior reviews and the problems were 10x harder than the actual assignments we were given. If 10 people pass that class I'd be surprised.
Avoid him if you can. He enjoys math but, hates teaching and it bleeds into every aspect of the class. 2 hours lectures and more than half of it is just ranting. Rarely responds to emails. Not sure why I paid for this class because I relied on youtube and the textbook more than him. He exists to grade you not to teach you.
teaching all over the place. not organized!!!!!
Professor Callaghan was awesome! Let me start by saying I am not that great in Math. I took him for Stats, and I actually enjoyed it! You have to read the book and do the optional homework assisgnments. He is not your conventional read off the powerpoint teacher. Show up to class, ask questionsparticipate and do the work and you will be fine.
In order to be successful in Callaghan's class you have to do a few things: attend class, participate, get extra help when needed, and do the homework not because it's graded but because it's what is on the tests. Though tough courses, I took him for 4 math classes because he rewards students with strong efforts, you just have to work for it.
He can go off on tangents sometimes but class is doable. He always offers office hours and caters to kids if they're struggling. Do the homework, and the tests are cake. Very nice guy.
Be warned, he will go on arbitrary tangents unrelated to the subject at hand. In addition, he will recite how many hours of graduate mathematics courses he has taken, repeatedly. Obviously an excellent mathematician, however, so is Stephen Hawking, and you don't see him teaching at community college. His grading is fair, but don't expect an easy C.
Great Teacher. If you pay attention in class, get the book, do the homework and can do basic algebra you will get an A. He presents the material well and is good at chatting about other things to break up the monotony of a math class. He is a fair grader and will help you do well. He's a really bright guy.
He is one of the best professor I have ever had. I love his lectures, and his jokes. he assigns lot of homework, but it helps with the tests and the over all score because the homework takes up a good portion of the overall grade. His test are not too difficult. If you pay attention in class, you will do just fine.
Online class was a good class to take in the summer. Used the MyMathLab online code. Had to take the final in school in person. Easy A.
Super nice dude, very lenient with extensions if you ask. Genuinely wants you to learn and do well. He doesn't care about grades so much as long as you understand the material.
Math 186 He is good. The Test is hard. the class is good not that bad. you can take !!
He is very nice and funny but if you struggle with math to begin with like I do I do not recommend him. He lectures at a fast pace is kind of all over the place, a bit confusing. He is very lenient with extending hwk assignments he doesn't want to see anyone fail he does care. He's not horrible, but if u struggle take someone else.
I would suggest taking his class. He is so friendly and helps whenever you need.
Super nice and funny, gives a lot of handouts but you really don't need to be finished them because they're not graded and are used for practice. Gets side tracked easily but the way he teaches things are very easy to understand and if you don't, ask questions!
If you paid to go to a college because you're not good at learning on your own, AVOID this professor. He's nice enough, but gets sidetracked. Poor hand writing, uses iPad on projector so you can't copy fast enough and learn. 3/4 of class failed first exam, including A students. I come out of lectures more confused than anything. Note: book also bad
Professor J. Callaghan is a great Professor!!!! Great to be around. Teaches the fundamentals and he doesn't like to move on without everybody being on the same page!!! He definitely has a heart for his students. Come prepared to learn ,participate, and study...... you'll receive the grade your striving for. your work depends on your grade.
For me the biggest thing in a class is me actually learning something I took calculus with this prof. HATED IT! ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! We only took two tests and a final we were graded on that his lectures suck! He uses an iPad with such a terrible writing. Never understood a word he said or wrote, had to teach myself the class and his exams suck!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I am majoring in mathematics, I genuinely enjoy doing math, but this guy is terrible. He talks about everything else besides the subject during class time. When students would ask a question he would say the questions were "dumb" or "stupid." He would then give assignments on things he did not teach and expect us to do it.
One of my favorite teachers are Gateway. Callaghan really cares about the students that participate in class and go to his office hours for extra help. He really wants everyone to win. Replaces lowest test grade, and the homework is an extra test grade too. Final counts for two test grades, so lots of chances to get a great grade!
This class was a bit unorganized, but Callaghan still really cares for students and will do whatever what it takes to help you win. Participation really matters, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. HE WANTS TO HELP YOU. We did cram trig in the last two weeks, that was my only complaint. Really made Calc I hard. He's really lenient with grades and tests though.
Professor Callaghan is very knowledgeable and knows how to teach the foundation of the lesson very well. If you actually do the work then you can easily keep up. He uses web assign, which isnt easy to use, but its pretty useful to actually get some practice in for the lessons. Then hes very easy to comprehend.
I took this and thought it was soo much because I had to basically teach myself with ALEKS. once I got the hang of things I enjoyed it and the day we were in school to take the final he was very welcoming and cracked some jokes to help us ease up. if youre capable of learning on your own with little help i recommend as an online course.
DO NOT take this guy for any advanced math courses. He uses an ipad with bad handwriting projected on a tiny screen. Small work area, you can't understand, then he scrolls away. Took him for calc and withdrew because none of his lectures made sense. Pulled a 3.99 GPA at the school, would have been trashed by his ineptitude if I had stayed.
This guy makes no sense. His tiny iPad and terrible handwriting are unbelievably hard to follow. No cameras in class (not even his) makes it feel like we are learning from talking to a wall. He talks about anything but math for 30 min straight. Tells us to tell him if he makes a mistake when we are just learning the material. Wish I dropped.
Spends first 1/2 hour of each class on random topics unrelated to class and is hard to follow. Has technical issues often. I ended up not going to class after first couple weeks (I attended prob < 7 classes). Ended up self teaching myself the rest of the semester. I honestly would not have done so well if he didn't keep pushing back due dates.
