Good professor. He really knows what he is talking about and wants his students to do well. I like that there is a lot of variety. We do something different each class. Tough grader though.
It was a somewhat interesting class and we covered a lot in one semester. There is a lot of reading in the class we usally averaged 50 pages of reading for the next class. Quiz are picky details, but tests are take-home essays that are easy A's
He is always willing to answer your questions. He doesn't give anything higher then an A- on papers and they have to be dynamite. His quizzes are easy as long as you have read..which you do alot.No exams. Only take home essays.
We love John. If he wore is red high-top converse to class. But seriously, he is a great professor and knows his stuff.
i didnt like him at all...not organized and late to class everyday!
A ton of reading... plus has many quizes on the reading
Not a good teacher at all. Don't you dare forget your book for class, otherwise you must leave. If you love boring lectures, then sign up for one of his classes. The class content is intresting, just not the format.
Prof. Camp is a very good prof. He expects good work and class participation, and he puts a lot of work into his class too. One of my favorite professors!
Great professor. One of my favorites. Extremely interesting and fair. Requires alot of work, always nice, and willing to listen. Compassionate too. Highly recommended if you love hist. Not if you don't.
He likes to hear himself speak. His lectures are boring and lacking any real substance. I dont think he even knows what he wants on his papers. Really picky if you dont bring a book to class. I would not take his courses again
hardest grader ever... expects way too much on small papers..so many readings and so much information... lectures all the time.. makes you feel STUPID
Theres lots of reading but only a few papers. Papers aren't too hard and they are all take home. Only down fall of the class is he can be boring and he gives random pop quizes in the beginning and not the end so make sure you READ!
Very hard grader, unfair
He knows his stuff. His lectures aren't that boring. Gives out a ton of reading. When papers are assigned, beware! He is a tough grader. Try to take another prof if possible!
Loved this class and learned a lot. If you do quality work, you'll earn a good grade.
Campbell is not as bad as people think. NO TESTS! Lots of reading (but dont always have to read). pop quizzes in the beginning so read for the first month EVERYTHING. you can write easy papers to make up for bad quizzes. take home papers and midterm/final (partner). go to class to be on his good side. go to class for a C. B if u try. hard A
He likes to talk a lot, requires a lot of reading, but it's not always required. He sometimes treats the class like it's te only course you're taking with some of the homework he gives.
very knowledgable, likes to talk a lot but the lectures are actually interesting. requires a lot of reading and gives pop quizzes for the first month on reading. no tests! take home papers for midterm and final..grades hard, but you'll be fine if you try. very nice guy! if you show up and speak up every once in awhile, he will love you
Ok, honestly, I do not remember getting better than an A- on a paper, mostly Bs, and I ended up w/an A in the class, because I talked once in a while. Take this class and be prepared to read a lot, everyday, but it is worth it. He occasionally shows up late.
Talk in class, you'll need the points. Papers are easy and short, as long as you actually put effort into it. Oh, and bring your book or he kicks you out. He sounds tough, but it's only because he seriously cares that students learn something.
Good class. He gives very good very clear lectures, with lots of comfortable places for people to comment. No major tests, which is always nice.
Great teacher.
He is definatly a hard grader but he knows his stuff! There is a ton of reading and a few papers, but no big tests. Just speak up in class every once in a while and put some effort into your papers, and you should be fine :-)
haven't had a good history prof yet so i wasn't too surprised. kind of a prick, one of those guys that refuses laptops. Lotta reading/ 4 complete books. Often times around 100 pgs between t/th class. I did learn A LOT though in all fairness. Pop quizzes all the time so just plan on them. Only two tests though (take home) Not a bad class overall.
Very nice and increadably knowledgable. He gets a bad wrap because it expects students to read and participate but honestly, we are in college, it should be that hard. No tests, just take home papers and tons of extra credit oppertunities. Show up, read, follow assignment instructions and participate in class and you will get an A easily.
tons of reading, pop quizes that are only maybe 5 questions so you better read! if you forget the book that you are discussing (5books) you will get kicked out! he really doesnt lecture much..its all discussion and him constantly asking the class questions! the only good thing is that you only have 2 take home exams/essays! i do not recommend him
wont let use laptops which would help keeping notes orginized. Quizes are very random, i think i got 0 -2 out of 5 on most of them. Very hard grader on papers but explains why he graded it so which is fair enough. Have to read a lot which isn't bad but it sucks when you fall behind. kind of arrogant, but can be nice first prof to learn my name
You have to buy 5 books, total waste of money. If you dont bring books to class you are kicked out. Too hard of a grader, expects too much, quizes all the time which everyone fails and way too much reading! takes attendence all the time and there are 2 take home exams which are extreemly hard!
Campbell has been my academic adviser and led our senior research seminar. He gets a bad rap because he is such an academic first, and educator second. He is a wealth of knowledge but is generally misunderstood and does not convey material in a traditional way.
very helpful if you ask, must attend class which is kinda fun, not a bad guy just has a bad rap, remember to bring your books to class otherwise you will get kicked out but he does let you share the books with other kids in the class other than that i recommend the class
Hard class. Not the clearest on his directions. Requires textbooks when you come to class or you get kicked out. I would def not recomend.
He is pretty strict, you have to make sure you read for class and bring your book or he kicks you out. The nice thing is that you never take tests, just small quizzes every once in a while. Try to avoid him.
Completely average. I enjoyed the lectures. Just a lot of reading. The way he wants essays done are completely tedious. I end up spending more time trying to figure out how he wants the paper done than working on the papers. He's super hands on and specific. But, I learned a lot. And as a history major, that's the most important. Recommend.
easy. gives reading everynight but if you don't read its okay because you have group disc. the next day.his quizzes are hard but he never gives test not even for the final. gives papers but for a majority of them you can work with a partner If you dont bring your book to class he'll kick you out but he does it in a nice way! I recomend him!
So the readings are ridiculous. Papers are ok and the quizzes are hard. Make sure you read otherwise he may get upset if you don't and say "come on you all should have read the material today." frustrating when his first paper he grades you on is on the scale of A C or F... mandatory attendance.... avoid if possible
Dr. Campbell is the most unfair grader I have personally ever had. He's not very clear on the directions of his papers, and if you don't understand you pretty much fail them. I'm a history major, and love the subject, but the way he teaches it is awful. Plus, he's always late to class--what the heck?? I'm paying for this class, at least be on time.
Unorganized, doesn't care how well you do in the class. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HIM!
Fairly monotonous. He really does want students to experience success and grades accordingly. Tough grading but if you read the required reading the class is a breeze and enjoyable
If at possible, avoid this instructor. He is consistantly 5 minutes late, but expects you to be on time. He grades like he's teaching a graduate student and expects way too much for a level 1 class. He does not allow you to use your computer for note taking and does NOT use D2L at all for any paperwork or grades, so have a very large folder.
I am not sure why everyone complains about him. Why is it so hard for you to bring a book to class. All you need to do is read a book and attend class and you will get a B. Yes the class can be boring but there is no tests and the three papers you write can be done in groups.
Be prepared or don't bother coming to class. Every class has a reading assignment and discussion. Grades papers like an English & history class so revise revise revise or get an F. Be on time or he gets cranky & always come to class. He is very smart about content and will know if students are not prepared.
Unhelpful if you need to miss class for something for your major. Quizzes are ridiculously set up for you to fail (i.e. lets not ask about the content, let's ask about some little minute detail that had nothing to do with the actual reading). Talks to talk. Makes you buy 5 books. Starts class late every day. Do not recommend.
LOTS of reading, especially for a 100 level course. Small quizzes at random. Lots of group discussion. No tests, only papers. Likes to talk. Decent lecturer, but hard to read the board.
This is the most evil and vile professor that walks this campus. His feedback is not readable. He is highly unclear in what he likes for his projects and expects FAR too much for an intro class. I loved history going in and this professor destroyed it. He is pompous, self-inflated, and out to fail you. Avoid him at all costs.
Campbell is a very solid professor. Some people don't like him because you actually have to read to succeed in the class, but it isn't too bad. Grade is based on papers, attendance, and quizzes. He is a good lecturer and a decently tough grader.
He is a great professor, and I would recommend him. You do have to do a fair amount or reading outside of class and you have to participate in class. He is always very respectful and knowledgeable.
Professor Campbell is not easy, but college shouldn't be. You have to bring your book to class everyday and do the reading. His quizzes are hard but they are always based on the reading guide;which you get for each reading. If you don't want to work don't take his class.30% of your grade is attendance and there are no tests, just papers and quizzes
I'm almost certain any history major will love this class. If you are another major and take this for the cultural aspect, that is good, yet remember history is mostly reading and analyzing. Professor Campbell is a highly knowledgeable and responsive person. Don't be afraid to speak up in class but don't try to BS participation points.
I really have enjoyed Campbell as a professor for a couple different classes and he has inspired my major decision. A lot of people complain about him, but if they complain it is because they are too lazy to do any work reading- not because Campbell is unreasonable because that's not true.
In hindsight this was by far one of my worst decisions avoid at all costs
Really nice guy that will teach you a lot if you give the class a chance. Gives you A LOT of reading but do it and you will do fine on quizzes. I have learned more from this class than any other class I have taken. Really insightful knowledge. He is a tough grader. It helps if you are a good writer. No tests, just papers. 25% of grade is attendance
Took a class with him and ended up dropping it. He assigns a ton of reading so be ready for that. Pop quizzes are not uncommon and there are usually several chapters (sometimes from multiple books) that he quizzes on, so it's very difficult to know what to look for. If you forget a book or can't get one he will mark you absent for that day.
John is a cute old man who will confuse you to days end. I took this class not expecting lecture, and there it was staring at me in the face! He drones on about interior design elements and gives the weirdest tests; IN CLASS ON YOUR OWN COMPUTER! Anyways, take the class for an easy art credit. He's sweet. Helped me when I was out for a few classes.
Good professor overall. Expects a lot for a 100 level course. SO much reading! Participate in class or your grade will reflect upon it. Very passionate about history which makes his class a lot better. He's willing to answer any questions to help you succeed.
A lot of reading but he gives you a question guide, answer those questions and you'll do fine on the pop quizzes. If you do bad there is extra credit. He is an adorable old man that is a real joy to learn from, he is very passionate about history. Beware of the papers though, heavily graded on grammar, run it through grammarly first.
Campbell honestly wasn't the worst professor I've ever had for history, but in a lot of aspects he surly isn't the best. He's huge on giving pop quizzes but if you do the assigned readings you will be fine. Attendance is mandatory and he takes it extremely seriously. He isn't easy to get ahold of outside of class and doesn't use D2L.
I am pretty sure that he would prefer to be an English professor, instead of being a History Professor. He expects the work of a 200 level class minimum on papers, and if you forget your book on a discussion day, he won't count your attendance. He expects active class participation in the middle of lecture, and his handwriting is abysmal.
If your an English major I would suggest him otherwise I would not. He is very strict grammatical and structural errors for his papers, 6 or more errors equals an automatic fail. There is also a lot of busy work, worksheets every night on two or three chapters that are used for discussion but were never graded.
He is someone who expects a lot out of you. You basically have to read something for every class so expect that. If he assigns a textbook, you are going to need it for sure. You really only had 3 big things you had to do in the class, the midterm and final were 2 papers & a group project. Participation and attendance are a big deal as well.
He repeatedly came to class late every day so don't worry if you're 2-5 minutes late because he's still gone getting his coffee. He has a ton of discussions, asks for MAJOR participation from you and has a lot of Essays and it gets old fast. He never had any tests just Quizs. SO BLESS UP. You read every night and have a worksheet. Be strong.
He likes to judge law enforcement in the Winona area without even knowing the facts. What kind of professor jumps to conclusions without having facts? Does he teach his students without knowing the facts? Or does he just make stuff up like he did for the Winona Daily News. Save your time and money.
Only gives an A, C, or F on papers. More likely than not a F. Doesn't matter how good your paper is, will give you a C if he finds the smallest error. Can't read his handwriting so you won't know how to fix your errors.
I enjoyed him, however, I consider myself to be a strong writer so my perception may be a bit skewed. Overall, I found his Research Methods class to be fairly interesting.
He knows his stuff, I learned much from him. Left the class feeling very guilty about how the Native Americans were and still are treated.
If you take this class, beware of the quizzes. He has a quiz almost every week and gives you tons of textbook readings as homework. He also lectures like every class so classes can get kinda boring. Although his class is extremely hard, he is very nice to people who engage in his class, and is a fairly nice person.
Lets just say there have been better history professors. Take a different class.
Dr. Campbell at first seems like a real jerk. But as the class goes on it gets better and if you ask for help he generally tries to help. However, he grades pretty hard for an entry level class and he assigns a lot of work. But, as your college career goes on you will realize he wasn't that bad and you will thank him of his tough grading early on.
if you take this class, you better be good at writing, because he is very critical about what you write. Lectures got kinda long and boring at times. He has difficult weekly quizzes and makes you read A LOT each night. Also, even if you read the readings, you still fail the quizzes because they can get very hard. Also can get rude to students.
Dr. Campbell requires a lot of out of class readings. There are random quizzes on the readings. They can be hard, but if you do the worksheets they usually are the same questions. His class is lecture heavy and don't contain a ton of student involvement. He is a very tough grader and expects your grammar to be perfect. Use the writing center!!!
He has a distinct way of teaching that either works for you or it doesn't. There are pop quizzes and in class group discussions, as well as a fair amount of lecture.
I looked forward to John's classes, he wasn't a bad history teacher. The paper grades are very strict, but he tells you exactly what to avoid. Many in-class discussions, he gives you questions to prepare. If you said something wrong, he was very respectful and will help you find the right answer. Show up, participate a bit, and you'll do fine.
He gives you papers to do throughout the semester and grades very strictly and doesn't give you nearly enough time with what he wants which makes it hard to pass. In person he only does lectures and discussions and that is it.
I enjoyed the way professor Campbell lectured and our in class discussions, but preparing for discussions was extremely time consuming and we were given little time to prepare. I would not take his class again.
Professor Campbells lectures are very good and well informed. He know what he is talking about and will answer your questions in depth. However, he has really bad hand writing and his feedback on your papers is very unclear. He also is a stickler for grading papers and will either give an A, C, or F. Make sure you do the reading bc of his quizzes.
You teach yourself, it is the most boring class ever. attendance is graded daily and he does not respond to emails at all.
Just don't take the class, I use to love US History but after taking this class it is by far my least favorite subject. Save your time
Daily attendance, subject to surprise quizzes each class. If you don't participate, you won't pass. Grades papers harsher than any language arts professor. Lots of textbook reading. Makes you buy three books, one book you use twice. The only positive side is he attempts to learn your name.
This class was not very difficult at all. Professor Campbell seems tough but once you get to know him, he is actually very nice. He does grade tough on papers, but if you talk to him, he will help you out. He almost always tells you when there will be a quiz in class and there are no big tests. Participate in class and you will be fine.
Daily attendance, its worth 25% of your grade too. He will learn your name tho. There is either a lecture or a class discussion. Pop quizzes most days but no midterm or final. If you didnt participate in the discussion youd lose those points. You had to do 3 papers and he grades so harshly. If you have to take this class, chose a diff professor
Your grade is based on 4 things- 25% attendance taken everyday, 25% participation 25% surprise quizzes, 25% papers 3 or 4 of them. He grades the papers tough and isn't clear what he wants. Is class is always either lecture or discussion that you have to participate in. Boring class made worse with a bad professor.
Campbell is such a sweetheart. He posts everything he will be doing in class a week ahead and as long as you check the discussions, you'll be prepared for any "pop quizzes". He literally tells you when those have a chance of occurring. No final or midterm just write 3 papers out of the 12 assigned, speak during discussions and you'll be great.
You'll have to read a lot in his class, but you'll be fine even if you don't do some of the readings. He gives very good lectures and he makes them not as boring as they could be. The only thing is that his handwriting is unreadable and he won't tell you your grade until the end of the semester.
Only big complaint is he doesn't post grades online. There is a lot of reading for class but you know what to look for in the reading from the discussion questions. Attend class every day and talk during discussions for easy points. If you write more than 3 papers he will drop the lowest grade(s). You will get the grade you want to work for.
John Campbell seems scary at first but really he is a sweetheart and always ready to help students. There are a lot of readings to do and discussions that go along with the readings but those are easy! He gives great lectures and is genuinely passionate about history!
You have to do the readings because he will sometimes do quizzes. There was no midterm or final, just 3 essays to complete throughout the semester. You wont receive a calculated grade until the very end of the semester.
Assigned an absurd amount of reading every night with very thorough questions that went along with it. Not a very friendly person, which made getting discussion points very difficult. Lectures were extremely boring and were not designed to help students retain any information whatsoever. Awful class.
If you put in the work, this class isn't that bad. He will be nice to you and get to know you if you put in the work. I found this class easy, but I'm a history major, so maybe not everyone will think this is easy. The only thing I don't like is that he doesn't use D2L for grades so you don't know how you're doing until the final grade is put in.
My favorite thing about this class was that we had no final, the grade was based on discussion participation, attendance, and 3 short papers. This class required A LOT of reading, so I would prepare for that. The professor was nice, a bit strict, the one gripe that I had was that he didn't post grades on D2L at all. The lectures were boring.
very blunt professor. He is extremely dedicated to the material he is teaching and gets annoyed when the class isn't equally invested. he doesn't use technology at all so throughout the semester you cannot see your grade until final grade is put in. homework every night and participation is 30% of the grade. attendance is 10% of your grade as well.
don't take this class.
