This is one of the hardest courses I've taken at BU. If you want an A, or even a B+, be prepared to go the extra mile.
Tests are the hardest tests ever. Labs/lab reports are not bad but require a lot of work. His class is really hard but he always makes time outside of class to help, but it still seems like his tests are impossible.
No idea what to expect for tests; frequent all-nighters for the lab reports, even if you start early. Should be a 400-level course. On a lighter note, both Caradonna and Laurie are really nice and have an infectious passion for chemistry.
Good intro to chem prof. Good at explaining things (at least compared to Tullius). The tests in this class are ridiculously hard, but if you're gonna take this class, take it with Caradonna.
SO MUCH WORK!!!
By far, this has been my favorite course at BU. It is true that the material is not easy, but Caradonna is always available to help you understand, he truly does care about his students so go to office hours! Tests are very hard but 'thought-provoking'. Lab reports will take you all week, no lie. You're in for fun with caradonna, he's awesome!
The only thing that made CH232 a fun and interesting course was Prof Caradonna! He is the greatest guy you'll ever meet, so helpful and passionate about chemistry. Lab reports take forever, though. Don't try all nighters for his exams you need sleep to 'think'. His exams are awesomely hard though. You'll be lucky to have him!
what a great professor! chem 101 is hard, but caradonna makes it bearable. he tries so hard to make sure that everyone in the class understands the concepts. he is genuinely interested in his students. if you're going to take chem 101, take it with him!! i just wish that he was teaching 102 so that i could have him again!
Not as good as Dill for CH 101...He usually ends up explaining the HISTORY of the chemistry, none of which is tested, just "a bit of useless trivia." Overall not bad.
He says stuff in lectures that aren't really that important for the midterms, and he goes off tangent for most of the hour. He's a good guy..
Professor caradonna is absolutely amazing. He knows exactly what he is talking about and is extremely clear. If you get him for ch 101 your life just became alot easier. Hes also very easy to approach outside of the classroom. Overall a great teacher and a great guy
Although most of the stuff Prof. Caradonna says is not necessary for exams, what he says is really interesting. You're all set for exams as long as you have Natalya for discussion. He provides a lot of biology applications and is really helpful during office hours. He is excellent in clarifying difficult concepts. Definitely recommended.
john caradonna is the best professor in the chemistry department--no, the best professor at BU, period. he is extremely helpful and will go well out of his way to make sure you get it. class is a ton of work, though.
caradonna is the smartest guy ive ever met and a very good teacher. he makes sure everyone understands the material very well by the end of the simester. the only problem is that the tests are next to impossible. take his class if you want to learn a ton about chemistry, but not if you want a good grade.
Professor Caradonna was really good at explaining the difficult concepts , although he got a little off topic in lecture sometimes. His tests, however, were impossibly hard and the class average was about a 55 on each of the exams. He said he doesn't scale but i was supposed to get a B and instead i got an A. This class is definitely a TON of work.
Prof. Caradonna is awesome! His class was really hard, but if you go to his office hours and your TF's office hours, you should be fine. His lectures are usually easy to follow and he is willing to clarify everything. His tests are super hard, but a lot of the problems on his tests are from books on reserve. A lot of work, but a great class!
Caradonna is a decent lecturer. He tends to get sidetracked on historical stuff that doesn't end up on tests, though. Tests are difficult, but he curves all grades at the end of the semester. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS AND CHECK OUT THE BOOKS ON RESERVE.
Caradonna is a great professor. He tries to make the class interesting by including information about scientists and history, but it works. I recommend this class although it is hard because he's a motivating teacher and gives great advice during office hours!
Professor Caradonna is the living essence of pure awesome. Enough said.
Very amazing professor! Teaches on the topics that he is going to test on. I would recommend this class to anyone. If a topic is unclear he is incredibly helpful in office hours and will take the time to be sure you understand the material. He is also a good advisor for BMB majors.
Relates to the students without trying too hard and without lowering his standards/expectations for academics. Amazing lecturer. I agree-definitely the living essence of pure awesome.
He's a really great teachers. Lectures are helpful for the exam. Very clear, pretty interesting. Makes really lame jokes that you can't help laughing at and keeps you engaged with little fun facts. Great class and very fair grader. Tests are difficult but if you study, you'll do fine.
Definitely the best professor I've had at BU. Actually cares about his students. Throws in all sorts of history/anecdotes that make class even more interesting. This is by no means an easy class, but inorganic isn't an easy subject to begin with. Pay attention, take notes, etc. Always willing to answer questions. And a pretty generous curve.
Great professor, interesting and extremely clear and helpful. Labs take a while to write up, but ohterwise enjoyable and straightforward. Tests had a few difficult questoins but not bad if you go to class.
Good lecturer, helps clarify the stuff that you read before class. However, he tends to stick to the history of the chemistry more than the actual concepts, which isn't good because the tests have nothing to do with the history. The lectures really have little to do with the tests - discussions are really important. Tests aren't like lectures.
This class is hard, but this professor is amazing. He is extremely interested in the subejct and wants the best for his students. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He's a great guy to talk to with a lot of insight. Test all have an average of 50 but thats not his fault (he doesnt make test)
Best Professor Ever. Got me interested in a subject I never thought I'd like
All around great professor. He is extremely smart.
Chemistry at BU is known for being hard as hell. Caradonna is not a good lecturer, but if you don't understand something, office hours are worthwhile. He is very knowledgeable of his tests, but don't be surprised when you get a 30 on your first exam. There was a lecture pop quiz, and most lectures are straight from the book. Overall good guy.
Great professor. Lectures can be boring and fast paced at times but he's very helpful in office hours. He knows his stuff and is always happy to help you. His exams are fair but challenging. Do all of the problems in the book before an exam. Not only are they helpful but some questions are very similar to the book.
In actual lecture, he rambles and talks about things completely unrelated to the coursework most of the time. It can be a little frustrating at times, but you can attend his or his TA's office hours for help. You will do fine on his tests so long as you do all of the problems in the textbook and are diligent about going to discussion.
Extremely hard class. Makes you want to die, but it gets scaled a lot so almost no one actually fails.
Difficult class, requires a lot of time and effort but it is really beneficial. When he tells you to do problems from the textbook(s) you really should/have to.
Professor Caradonna always tries to help but the class itself is not well organized and the labs take way too much time to write. The class is very interesting and useful but it is impossible to understand everything even if you read the textbook many times. Hardest exams and hardest class ever taken!
A great professor, got me interested in what I thought would be a dreadful subject. Lecture is fast-paced but interesting, with lots of historical anecdotes, and he is super helpful during office hours. The tests are only slightly harder than homework, and the curve is pretty large. The lab reports take a long time to write, so start them early.
Cold-hearted
I absolutely loved Caradonna. He really makes you work for the grade, but it's so worth it. You don't have to go to his lectures to do well, but definitely do practice problems. Would most definitely recommend if you're good at chem.
Professor Caradonna is a great professor! He really challenges students, so getting the grade you want requires a lot of effort. Make sure you go to his lectures even though they're hard to understand sometimes. And go to his office hours; he's very friendly and helpful.
Not sure how anyone manages to like this man. He's friendly enough but a very bad teacher. Then again, most people who take his class dont have a choice so this is all pointless
Professor Caradonna is an experience. He can be scatterbrained and forgetful, so while he doesn't assign homework, that doesn't mean you can get away doing no problems. He lectures on whatever he's interested in the most and does a lot of derivations, but things tend to make sense come exams. It's a lot more independent learning that CH111.
Caradonna likes to make students think in a different way. Exam questions are never exactly the same as questions you do in lecture or for homework, but at the same time, the questions are fair. His office hours, while early in the morning, are very interesting and a great way to get insight on what topics will be on the test. Very smart and caring
An interesting man to say the least... His lectures are filled with many historical anecdotes and meaningless derivations but it leaves you with a better way to connect with the material. Most tests are impossible, averages in the 50s, but the curve at the end is nice. Go to his office hours if you want hints about future exams.
Is one of the most confusing professors I've ever had. Tries really hard to explain the foundations and sources for chemical principles but makes the concepts really difficult to understand in the process. Lectures don't give everything, so if you don't read the textbook and do the extra practice problems, you're absolutely toast.
This professor does not care about your life. The tests are incredibly unfair and you feel like you wasted all your time studying because though the questions are fair with respect to content, the time constraint makes completion impossible. You have to read the textbook because his lectures are useless.
I understand why some might be upset about his lecturing styleit is a bit all over the place. However, anyone who has anything bad to say about his helpfulness has clearly never been to his office hours. He is incredibly accessible and on a smaller scale explains concepts super well. Definitely not an easy A by any means but hes so sweet.
Caradonna doesn't know how to teach in a large lecture. His feedbacks on the exam are so unclear..... cuz there isn't any...... and most of the time in lecture he rambles on and on about stuff that "we shouldn't worry about the exam". He is a nice teacher with a great attitude and love for chem. He just doesn't know how to teach!
He's helpful during office hours and he's very sweet. However, his lectures a little over the place, and I stopped going because all you need to look at is in the textbook and his notes. His exams are extremely hard, while a few questions are fair game, there are always 2-3 questions that are very difficult. Read the textbook and do the questions.
chem is a really hard class, lectures are long and boring. please read the textbook if you want to even think about passing. office hours are helpful but lectures are boring. tests are super conceptual
This course requires a lot of studying and doing practice problems if you want a good grade. The lectures were not as engaging but this was because of online learning during covid. Professor Caradonna was really helpful during his office hours and always took the time to explain concepts clearly. Tests were hard and not like the textbook questions.
This class is really difficult and unless you are willing to challenge yourself, it's best to stay away from this course.
Prof. Caradonnas lectures are pretty hard to follow because of the fast pace, and sometimes they are all over the place. However, he is very helpful in his office hours and always ready to schedule one-on-ones. Reading the textbook and doing all of the practice problems is key to passing the course. Exams are difficult, but always fair game.
Very knowledgeable guy with helpful office hours (but they were early in the morning before class). Lectures are pretty boring, though. You have a better chance of just spending lecture time reading the textbook and then going to office hours for clarification if needed than to actually attend lectures. Tests were very hard and averaged around 50%.
Lectures aren't mandatory, and they're extremely hard to follow. You have to read the book and do the problems. Make sure you clarify all of your questions during office hours. He's really passionate about and knowledgeable about chemistry, but he's not as good with lecturing.
Professor Caradonna clearly cares about his students and is extremely accommodating about being available outside of class. He's rated so low bc his lectures were absolutely the worst I have ever had in my entire life it was just him scrolling through a pdf of his atrocious handwriting every single day. I couldn't pay attention to save my life.
Knowledgeable and cares a lot of this subject. However, his lecture notes and lab manual are often very unclear. Standards are sometimes confusing. You have to go to office hours a lot to get clarification otherwise you probably won't get the material. His exams are long but not too in-depth. Interesting personality and teaching philosophy
Caradonna's lectures were the absolute worse. This class made me reconsider my major and even attending BU. His tests were so conceptual I couldn't tell if it was a trick question or not. His office hours are helpful but so early, it isnt even worth it. His handwriting made no sense. Better off reading off the textbook.
He definitely cares a lot about his students and their success, and he is extremely accommodating. The lectures were a pdf and not necessarily the most organized/readable. Overall, I enjoyed this class and learned a lot!
He promised me a letter of recommendation for my grad school and he did not deliver, despite constant reminders. Sent him multiple emails regarding the same, as I genuinely needed the letter but he never responded after that one time when he said he'd write me a recommendation. I also reached out to him via phone and no response. Wouldn't recommend
Spends most of the time talking about history or derivatives of equations rather than the content itself. He was consistently behind syllabus schedule, while our discussion quizzes were on schedule, so I basically taught myself everything using the textbook. Makes no difference whether you attend lecture because you have to teach yourself anyways.
Lectures, discussion, and lab are so uncoordinated. If you want to do well, study at home instead of going to class. Lecture is an absolute waste of time. Even though Caradonna is so passionate and loves chemistry, his tests make you hate it.
Lecture is a huge waste of time as he spends the entire time talking about random irrelevant stuff. Lecture falls behind the labs and exams. For example, an exam is scheduled in 2 days on topics A, B, and C, but the lecture the week before only covers Topic A. Not sure how he manages to say so much yet so little. Alslo, makes exams unpassable
Although Caradonna is a kind and smart guy, he is an awful lecturer. He makes topics WAY more confusing than they have to be. Also, he holds lectures on topics AFTER we already got quizzed on them, which makes no sense. To pass, you have to teach yourself by reading the textbook. His grading scale is unclear, and he finds joy in low exam averages.
hes nice and somewhat helpful in office hours but his tests are always random and deviate extremely form what he lectures on. he was extremely behind this year and didnt bat an eye about the averages for the exams being failing grades. his grading criterea is extremely unclear and its so difficult to figure out where you stand in the class.
This class is incredibly uncoordinated between the different sections; discussion is spent catching up on things not covered in lecture and the lab is often weeks ahead of the lecture material. The discussion problems, quizzes or textbook problems are nowhere near what the exams are like. The lectures are pointless, nothing relevant for the test.
The lectures are so pointless, I went for one month and stopped because I realised you could read the textbook and do practice problems for the discussion section. Nothing prepares you for the tests that Caradonna makes, even what he lectures on doesn't show up on the test. His grading makes no sense and it's difficult to know your grade.
I'm a chemistry major and I've taken 111/112 and 211/212 and enjoyed both, so I'm not just saying this because I'm bad at chemistry or can't handle a reasonable workload. Genuinely Caradonna is the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures are utterly a waste of time. Labs are tedious and not instructive. He is incredibly disorganized. Avoid!
Lecture is a complete waste of time and exams are extremely difficult.
His lectures were informational, but the material covered on the exams only loosely assessed what his lectures talked about. He seems like a nice person, but he definitely is not the best professor. The curve for the class is generous. Go to office hours for clarification about the lab manual, because you're definitely gonna need it.
I took CH109 with Caradonna fall 2021. He fell so far behind the syllabus that we never finished the material- most was self taught. He is kind and loves chemistry, but he does not know how to explain concepts in lecture. The textbook + discussion OH are great resources. There is a good curve, so don't stress too much about low exams.
Professor Caradonna has made it clear that he hasn't taught a gen. chem class in over 20 years. His tests are nothing like what he teaches. The class is graded by 4 things. He grades with the phoenix policy which is confusing and leaves you feeling like you're playing a guessing game the whole semester. If you have a choice don't pick him.
Caradonna is very nice but: His lectures are often irrelevant and useless, and his exam questions are extremely different than anything covered in the lecture or the textbook. He tells students the key to success is doing textbook problems, but his exam questions for the most part are nothing like the textbook. Avoid at all costs.
The test is hard, but don't worry, everyone failed. You are not going to fail the course as long as you stay around in the average. Whatever he talked about in the lecture doesn't really matter, just do the practice problem. Professor Caradonna is passionate about chemistry, but you would need to learn how to self-taught yourself in this course.
Caradonna is the most ineffective teacher I have ever had to deal with. He explains unnecessary information that you won't be tested on and you don't need/want to know. The textbook problems, which he recommends, are nothing like the tests, which he makes insanely complex and irrelevant. Do anything you can not to take his class.
Caradonna has a lot of grandiose ideas about experimental teaching that are not inherently wrong, but where the class really fails in its implementation. He gives few resources, and tests on holistic and oftentimes theoretical test questions nothing like the textbook. Caradonna is a nice guy, but he makes the class much harder than it needs to be.
lecture is barely ever related to actual fundamentals of the topic that is being discussed, as he very often goes into historical origins or derivations of an equation that are entirely unnecessary. he says to learn from the textbook & the textbook is significantly more helpful than lectures but tests are nothing like either of them.
Professor Caradonna is a nice man. However, his exam questions are extremely difficult and hard to break down. He tells us to use the textbook problems to prepare us for the exams, but most times, the exam questions are nothing like the textbook problems. He never really goes over questions similar to exam questions during lecture either.
prof caradonna is an extremely smart chemist, however he should not be teaching any introductory chem course. the lectures were a waste of time because we didnt go over any practice problems similar to the ones on the exam. some of the exam questions were harder than the textbook ones. he often went off topic during lecture too. take ANYONE else!
the worst professor ever. he doesn't teach for the first three weeks of class and makes u regret every deciding to take a chem class
Caradonna is the absolute worst. His lectures do not prepare you at all for the exams. He leaves you completely in the dark about how you are doing in his class and never provides a clear grading scale. Do anything you can to not take a class with him!!
He'll tell you to study by doing practice problems in the textbook, but the problems on the exams are completely different from anything in the textbook. Half of what he says to study isn't even on the exam. Not worth your time!
Prof Cardonna is extremely smart and passionate about the subject. However, his lectures are pointless and rambling do not bother going. The test is nothing like the practice problems, and you and everyone else will fail. Office hours are helpful sometimes. Makes chem 101 a way harder class than it needs to be.
I thought these reviews were being dramatic but it really is that bad. Instead of learning how to solve the problems on chem tests we were given long rambling history lessons that were irrelevant. Tests are hard but the curve is helpful and he is nice outside of class. Be prepared to teach yourself pretty much everything.
He's a tough professor but kind and gives good feedback if you didn't do well on an exam. You rely more on practicing and understanding the concepts yourself, with the lectures being supplemental to your learning. He has lots of office hours. He has a fair grading policy but its kind of up to you to learn and apply the material on exams.
People create this fear of CH101 because of its supposed difficulty. Caradonna is a cool guy, he is a little too smart though. Sometimes he gets too technical. His lectures are not enough to do well on the test, you have to take matters into your own hands. His 1 on 1 is good though. He cares and is there for you.
The lectures are very painful and do not set you up for success. The test questions are extremely difficult and feel as if they are designed for us to fail. I did not learn anything. I spent an abundance of time doing book questions as we were instructed but this did not help me as the questions on the exams were completely different.
Professor Caradonna. Where do I start. Never in my life have I prayed that I got over a 50 on an exam but with him that is a good thing. I think I could recall each page in that textbook if I was asked and the exams were STILL excruciating. Average exam grades were always an F and
He seems like a really nice guy and is extremely knowledgable but this class is quite literally the worst class I have ever taken. The exams are insanely difficult even after studying for weeks on end and doing his study methods I still get awful grades. Class makes me rethink ever being a stem major. Overall awful class, DO NOT TAKE!
He is probably rated poorly because of the tests. But, the professor is very caring and does his best to help students. However, since there are so many students you need to be the one to seek initiative and schedule appointments. The lectures are not helpful because he rants, so skip the lectures and just read the textbook instead.
Worst class ever, do not bother going to his lectures because he gives history lessons rather than useful material, every other TF was always astonished with how far behind we were being taught as a class, pre-lab is a saving grace, do not bother with the packets, everybody except Caradonna contributed to the learning environment
Amazing human being, but bad lecturer. I often found myself falling asleep in his lectures and later on skipped them to just read the textbook. After the first midterm, many dropped out. His "Phoenix policy" is very unclear. Main key is to actually understand the content and be able to solve advanced questions, not just the simple hw qs.
Lectures sometimes dragged on and sometimes the information felt pointless but if you prepare beforehand and read the sections of the book it makes sense. There is also a crazy curve to the class and I had a B letter grade wise but got an A with the curve so you will definitely get a good grade with him.
CH 101 is already one of the hardest classes at BU but Dr. Caradonna single handedly made the experience nearly impossible. He does not provide any useful feedback in office hours. He responded to every concern of mine about the class with "welcome to college". His lectures are often irrelevant or uninformative. TLDR: You are gonna be your own prof
No no no. If I could go back in time, I would not take his class. Exams will leave you in shock. They are nothing like the homework or textbook. He uses the excuse, "you signed up for this" when he makes the exams impossible. No amount of studying will make you feel prepared for this class. Very smart man, too smart to be teaching.
This was Dr. Caradonna's first semester teaching CH131, and it should be his last. He does not curve actually anything for the class even though he tells us he wants to make the class 'easier' because we are engineering students and don't want to be taking the class to begin with. The exams are next to impossible too. Good luck if you ever have him
Professor John Caradonna is good if you are ready to put in the time, effort and consistency in attending lectures and doing regular readings. His lectures are hard to understand if you do not come prepared. He shows genuine interest in his students, and he wants his students to do well. The exams are quite average in terms of difficulty.
If you are planning to take Professor Caradonna, good luck because by the end of the course, you might go insane from all the homework questions he assigns and how difficult his exams are. Professor Caradonna's tests are honestly made by the devil and are ridiculously hard even if you use the textbook. If you can, choose another professor!!
Run as far away from this sadistic man as possible. This course left me in complete shock and exams were impossible. When I approached him outside of class about my struggles, he told me to "spend less time on other classes" and would explain to me how to study. Professor Caradonna is smart, but he is the worst teacher. I was stuck with him twice.
He is the off-track lecturer so it's a lot different than the spring semester 101 & 102, but he's still a very good teacher. He really cares about his students and this class. Yah, he tests are hard, the homework is long, and the lectures are kinda boring, BUT IT'S CHEMISTRY THATS HOW IT IS! Even though I haven't gotten the best grades, I love him.
I read all the chapters before coming to class, and was still lost during lectures. He goes on random tangents that barely correlate to the subject matter. He says he will post things by a certain day (including exam scores) and then posts them days later, if posted at all. Exams are on material not covered. AVOID THIS CLASS!
John Caradonna is extremely confusing. His lectures will put you to sleep, there are very few guidelines for tests other than practice problems from textbook which there are hundreds of. The discussion section of the course is useless as the sheets and practice problems provided do not pertain to the course in any way that is helpful to the test.
In the beginning, he was really supportive and would respond to emails. But towards the end he started ghosting. This will also be the first class where a 60% is considered "average". This class definitely will make you learn a lot, and self-discipline skills. Really smart and respected professor, too smart to be teaching an introductory course.
Lectures are boring and will put you to sleep, but at least they are recorded. Exams are pretty difficult. The textbook is also pretty hard to understand.
Caradonna's lectures were very boring, making it hard to stay awake. The office hours and other resources he had were fairly helpful but placed at such inconvenient times for my schedule where I could barely go to any of them. Surprisingly light final grade because I thought I failed according to my midterm grades.
This class was worse than CH101. Do not bother with the lectures.
He didn't respond to my emails at all during the last month of school, didn't even give me back one of my exam scores. His grading curve for the tests are extremely unclear, and lectures so confusing. I stopped watching lectures after a month. Tests averaged about 50% which is crazy because why would he make it so hard?
Caradonna had boring lectures, but he did cover the content well. He's a nice guy and wants students to succeed but towards the end it didnt seem like he cared anymore. He didnt respond to any of my emails throughout the semester but was helpful in office hours. He had a nice (but confusing) curve on the class.
Sweet, helpful, caring prof. but should be a history professor, not chem...
A teacher who understands the concepts of what he is teaching very well. Lectures are dense, but if you're able to follow them then you're in a great place. Key is to constantly pick his brain, ask questions and attend office hours as much as possible (he's not great with logistics tbh, be ready for that) to see how he likes things.
Lectures were not helpful for the test at all. He barely teaches you how to solve problems but instead teaches the history of chem not helpful information needed for the class. For this class, he basically expects you to teach yourself and learn from the textbook.
RUN PLEASE RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN
The lectures can be dry, but preparing well with the textbook and utilizing resources like unstuckstudy really helps. The exams are challenging, but the curve makes a good grade attainable with consistent effort. Overall, it's a tough class, but doable if you stay engaged.
He is such a bad teacher man
homework and lectures teaching you how to use a screwdriver, and exams let you make a rocket.
He was horrible. He teaches this class off sequence, designs this course himself. His tests are really hard. I did Chemistry in IB and it was a cake walk compared to his class. The questions in the exam are not going to be remotely similar to the textbook. Spare yourself the trauma and trouble and don't take him. His class will def hurt your gpa.
I didn't understand anything. His lectures were boring and very packed with unnecessary or confusing information. I did okay on the tests but that was sheer luck. Good luck!
Never take this professor unless you have to. Gave up on going to lecture during finals because it didn't even help —more history heavy, speeds through all the slides, textbook gave me more support, my prelab professor was even better and broke down the content very easily in an understandable manner. RUN from this course.
If you don't have the option for another prof, definitely take it outside of BU or hold off until your second year. Definitely the worst professor for this course. "Phoenix Policy" is a load of bull. Almost nothing he says will be on exam actually shows up on the exam. Forgets to assign homework he talks about. Definitely a self study course
Would NOT recommend taking this course mainly as your first chem course. The lectures were not based off exam and since they were at 8 am it was difficult to listen and focus on what he was saying. Attendance is based off clicker questions. Average grade on first exam was a 50%. 3 exams rather than 6 exams which other CH101 classes does not have.
Absolutely horrible professor, have to go to lecture (8 am)-learn absolutely nothing from it. Goes on tangents (not relevant for tests)Gives you the breakdown of chapters the test will be on. NOTE TO FUTURE STUDENTS (ALWAYS THE LAST CHAPTER HE FOCUSES ON AND PUTS ON THE TEST)You have to self-study. Makes u purchase achieve-used twice for hw and $80
I rush to catch the B train to attend his class at 8am, and want to run straight in front the B train in frustration. If you want to cry and doubt yourself, go ahead.
I can't say too much as I didn't go to lecture all semester, but based off of the first few weeks it felt not very helpful which is why I stopped going. The curve was really good though I went up 3 letter grades.
I don't even go to this school and word has reached me about how awful this professor is. Having below a 50% midterm average is just insane to me. Soul crushing professor.
if you can run far far away
please dont take his class I crash out every time after his exams and hours and hours into studying nothing works and he just tells me I'm studying the problems wrong. worst professor ever
Caradonna is a nice man, however I do not think that he can teach entry level chem, and he hasn't in like 20 years. I have nightmares about this class, it seriously made me consider dropping out of college and ruined my entire semester. The amount of time you need to put into this class to even pass makes it impossible to literally do anything else
I study so hard for the tests just to do horrible. The exams consist of 5 questions with multiple parts and you're only given 50 minutes to complete it, so you have 10 minutes to do each question. God forbid he gives you time to think or make one mistake. Horrible teacher, don't take the class even if you have to fall behind
I dont know why's everyone critcizing him. Whenever i go to the lecture hes so engaging to everyone in his lecture and he has been the mentor of my life after i attended his office hours. he truly cares about each and every student and he truly just wants to prepare everyone for college. I only study for a day every exam and got the highest score.
Do not take this class!!! This class is 100% self taught, and the textbook problems he suggests using to study for the exams are nothing like the actual exam questions. His lectures are 90% the history of chemistry and not useful at all. Please take this class somewhere else if you actually want to learn properly.
Truly one of the worst classes i think i have ever taken in my entire college career and actually made me consider dropping out or changing my major. He's a nice guy but his exams have NOTHING to do with what he tells you to study and his lectures are almost entirely useless. Be prepared to teach yourself everything and i would recommend a tutor.
He's sweet. But he is one of the worst teachers I've had. He stresses “conceptual” based chemistry, completely fails to explain the concepts without going on a rant about something totally irrelevant. Ignores actual problems or examples just to yap about concepts. Confused me and I took chem before. Him paired with Georgiadis, a match made in hell.
if you want to teach yourself all semester then go ahead and take this class. He gives no assignmenys only exams (3 of them) and then the final. all he talks about in the history of chemistry and fails to teach what he puts on the exams. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU HAVE THIS PROFESSOR PLEASE GUYS IM TRYING TO SAVE YOU!!!!!!!
This is in response to that guy who said that they do not understand why Caradonna is a bad Professor and said that he got to the highest score after minimal studying. To that guy, you very pretentious and disconnected from reality. This class is difficult bc of the Caradonna and he does not teach well. Please touch grass and get a life!
Caradonna should not be an intro chem professor. He teaches topics as if you are a graduate student. There are not good practice problems to do and he never uploads the homework when he said he will. If you are on off track chemistry as in taking chem 101 during the spring semester DONT DO IT. Just wait or go to another school.
Don't take this class, the average for his tests are like 50. He talked about the history of Chemistry for the first month of the semester and did not test anything on it. Seems like he's teaching but in reality he's just yapping. The prof is nice, he is just not a good teacher.
Prof. Caradonna gets way more hate than he deserves. He is so nice and lets you schedule 30 min 1-on-1 meetings with him. People should not be afraid to take this class if they are willing to put in the work. If you study the textbook problems like crazy, you'll be fine.
Caradonna isn't as bad as
Caradonna was so nice and accessible outside of class. I really recommend going to lectures and office hours, for me everything clicked after I'd tank an exam so his phoenix policy meant I did really well even tho I was getting 60-70s on exams. MIDTERMS SO HARD but final is easier and generous, unclear curve. Chem is hard in general but doable
Took CH101 this spring and somehow passed with a B. I failed every exam and did pretty well on the final and thanks to the pheonix policy I passed the class. This class is hard, be prepared to teach yourself everything. Have to take him for Ch102 so pray for me.
Unclear grading criteria. Class test averages were consistently ~55% (most people didn't finish them either) and he didn't curve until the final grade. Homework was 5% of our grade and only gave us two assignments. Most hated this course. Either chem will click or it won't. Get ready to sign up for ERC tutoring. Concepts >> all else for these tests
he's a good man but terrible teacher. you need to self-study concepts to do well because the practice questions are nothing like the exams. you're unlikely to get above a 80% on any of the 3 midterms, but just power through b/c his self-determined curve will save you at the end.
Yes, the course was challenging, but at the end of the day my grade was very good. Also, professor Caradonna is really kind in his office hours and explains the concept very well. He genuinely wants everyone to pass.
Because of my prior AP Chem knowledge (BU doesn't take a 5), I got by without studying for exams and only going to half the lectures, but his "Phoenix Policy" of curving was super unclear. Lectures weren't worth attending, exams pretty much focused on just one or two concepts with every question about them. I averaged 85s and got curved to an A!
bad prof. teaching style is terrible. caused sense of imminent doom and despair.
Professor Caradonna doesn't deserve all the hate he gets. He only teaches CH101 off-sequence, so CGS students get him. He's incredibly sweet and genuinely wants his students to succeed, I highly recommend going to his office hours. There's an insane curve (I know several who failed all 3 exams and ended with an A-), you just need to put in effort.
Phoenix policy: If you show improvement on topics from earlier exams on the final exam, his grading team will go back and re-grade those old tests based on how much better you did. It's a way to make up points. Post-final, you can email him and he will tell you how the Phoenix Policy specifically applied to your tests. It's a very generous curve.
The textbook will not help you as much as you think. He will teach you one thing and expect you to practically cure cancer on a test. Do not take him, but there is a huge curve so just get above the average and you will be fine.
avoid this professor at all costs. smart, but an ineffective teacher; caradonna normally explains the history of chemistry or doesn't explain the concepts at all, at least in lecture each week. in office hours he's more okay, but passes off your concern for not understanding chemistry as something to work on yourself. inflates (lies about) scores
Chill guy but cannot teach a lecture. Reading the textbook barely helps too. Just do all the textbook problems with the solutions manual and use online videos to teach yourself. His lectures rarely helped and all the information can be found online. He's a D1 yapper in office hours, mostly a waste of time. Phoenix policy is amazing though
Brace for impact.
he made me sad :(
3 exams each worth 15% of your grade. Only readon why he doesnt get 1 star is because of the Phoenix Policy, basically if you do good on the final you can still get an A in the class even if you failed first three exams. Doesn't do practice problems which is basically what is on the exam. Records lectures though, but be ready to self-teach.
I withdrew because of him. So sad.
The exams are incredibly difficult for anyone not interested/already well-versed in basic chem. He doesn't really talk about much of what's going to be on the exam in lectures, so be prepared to self-learn through textbook problems.
Get ready for a John Caradonna yappathon. he made most of his lecture about history and history tests are not on the test. Always count on that pheonix policy. Unfortunately this class is unavoidable so please just get it over with.
If you're not religious, find one.
His class is relatively easy, and the tests aren't that hard, but he assigned 60 problems over thanksgiving break right before a midterm. Would not take again even though it was easy.
why is there no 0 rating this guy doesnt even deserve a 1
here's a phone number to call around exam time. you can thank me later. 988.
it's a lot harder if u don't have a solid background in chem.. if ur taking this class just self study or find someone that's good at chem bc going to his lectures r a waste of time discussions can be helpful depending on ur tf i wish i never took this class
If youre looking at these ratings and considering to take this class please dont. Take chem somewhere else and transfer credit. This professor has no connection to his students. The tests are on an entirely different level to the coursework. From a sixty problem assignment you will see nothing familiar on the exam. He will not test what you know.
Um guys its not worth it. Caradonnas lectures are not helpful at all. Whether you go to lecture or not, watch the recorded lectures, read the entire textbook, do practice problems, or all of those you will still fail.
Midterms and final are worth 60% of your grade which is ridiculous, he doesn't teach (teaches chemistry history instead) for the first month, and after that lectures are mostly irrelevant content. Textbook is too difficult for an INTRO chem class, self studying is the only way to pass this. If you're an atheist, you should consider converting.
The textbook is effective for a class that teaches the textbook but this class tests (doesnt teach) much deeper than that.
This man was the worst professor I have had in all of my college career. He doesn't have a clear grading criteria, and will make you thing that you're failing class till the day before grades come out where he will curve your grade without saying that's what he's doing. He never taught me anything useful and his exams are NOTHING like any homework.
don't, just don't
fade every lecture and do practice problems
do not take this class i repeat do not take this class absolutely stupid
Frequently goes on tangents that have zero correlation to the course. Incredibly inconsistent in assignment posting (both classwork and homework) and test questions bear no resemblance to past work. Says to practice with textbook questions, but gives no direction as to what from the textbook is important to practice. Great man, terrible prof.
He hasn't taught any content whatsoever, practice problems are all you can do but the exam won't even look like those. Simply does not teach, assigned 60 questions in a week
I feel more lost than navigating the universe.
this guy is a demon. i've never had a TA so set on crashing out on his own professor. this guy is so vague with his grading, doesn't prepare you for exams, lies about content that'll appear in the exam, and takes a week to respond to emails. just pray, hope you get the median, and try to survive the 12 weeks of doom.
Great professor if you want to be miserable and hate yourself
worst professor of my life. the class wouldnt even be as bad if the professor was better, but because of his super unorganized and terrible teaching style, half the class is failing.
The devil reincarnated.
Professor C is a wonderful human being. Genuinely a joy to chat with, so sweet, and clearly incredibly educated in his field. Unfortunately, he is a poor lecturer. He teaches like we are grad students who are already familiar with the material. I will say, he's super helpful 1-1. Difficult course, but you can make it through.
This class was extremely infuriating. In the later part of the semester, we were given 60 homework questions over the Thanksgiving break, and midterm 3 two weeks after midterm 2. Also, my discussion TA dropped our class, and we weren't informed until I asked the professor personally. Overall, character development class (TRY TO STAY AWAY).
i already hated chemistry coming into bu, and having him as a professor had to be the cherry on top. first day of class, lecture was full. now, you can count all the students in 10 seconds. the 100+ slides he post for every chapter, don't bother reading. midterms were HARD. i spent 7+ hour studying every day just to fail. i'm just hoping for a C-
You'll have better luck predicting the lottery numbers than guessing what questions show up on the exam.
The class averages for all the exams were F's no matter how much time and energy students spent studying. During finals week I asked him what I could do to at least get me a passing grade, and he said to do every single problem in the textbook. I did and the phoenix policy helped me raise my grade from F to B+, not worth the mental pain though :(
🫩 class of doom and despair
Denial: "I took AP, cant be that hard" Anger: Average of all exams are < 35% Bargaining: Office hours, textbooks, prayers, Chat gpt Depression: ICE tables haunt my dreams. Acceptance: I survived, gained nothing, and lost my innocence. Would I take this class again? No. Do I respect him? Begrudgingly, still No. Am I permanently changed? Absolutely
I would rather be a gladiator in ancient Rome than take this course again.
Pt. 1: I attended 95% of the lectures and couldn't tell you what we did in a single one. Every single lecture was full of useless historical tangents that would take up almost the whole lecture. All he tells you is to prepare for the exams is the textbook questions. Even my TA was distraught by the course's organization.
Pt. 2: Before the midterms, I would do 70% of the textbook questions, and not a single one of the textbook questions could've prepared me for what was on the exam. While preparing for the final, he tells us we can't use our midterms to study because the material won't be the same.
Pt. 3 Homework is so inconsistent. He posted homework for chapters 1-2, then posted nothing until Thanksgiving break, where he assigned 60 questions on three units. I had to teach myself so much of this course, and still only ever scored above average on exams, where the mean was consistently 30%. Overall, the hardest class I've ever taken.
Just pray.
not the worst chem professor but definitely not the best. lectures were mostly on conceptual things despite the tests being purely quantitative? pray for you
Id rather give 5 star to organic chemistry tutor
For the future ME students, PLEASE TAKE CH 101 instead of CH131 (you can still fulfill credits). doing 1000 probs from textbook doesnt prepare you for the exams. never responds emails. lecture slides consist of words not numbers or diagrams. his blackboard page is SOO disorganized it took me days to get used to it. the avg exam scores are 30~40btw
lectures are a waste of time
Lectures were not beneficial as he talked about the history behind chemistry rather than the actual content Hw does not help Averages were always low in the 40s
Genuinely the worst class I have ever taken. Lectures are a waste of time, he will not teach you anything in lecture nor during office hours, avoid this little man. Do not take the class if you get stuck with him. Syllabus is basically written in Chinese (greek if you actually know Chinese), with no clear description or expectations of us.
Do not take this course if you value your GPA, sleep, sanity, and wellbeing. Exams average between 30%-50% with no curve. Lectures are monotonous where he only drones on about history. He rarely assigns problem sets and expects you to figure everything out on your own. The night before the final he still has not provided the equation sheet.
the night before every exam i couldn't sleep because of how anxious i was. no amount of studying can prepare you for the exams. don't take this class unless you hate yourself; i genuinely wanted to never wake up again
old guy who doesn't teach or provide any resources and magically assumes that the textbook will teach everything then say that certain parts aren't relevant to the course when in reality nothing is relevant for test and bro just spends time in lecture gooning abt the history of chem would rather be alive during the black plague
i remember i got drunk on halloweekend with my buddy and i was limping up and down the streets of boston, and i still somehow managed to explain the photoelectric effect to him better than caradonna could.
He was the reason I cried myself to sleep everyday. I hoped to get hit by the BU bus before every exam just to miss it because we all knew we were doomed regardless. you have to teach yourself everything and I myself learned more from YouTube than his lectures.
Professor Caradonna presents all the chemistry concepts in a way that overcomplicates them as much as possible. He covers topics that never appear on the exam and speaks in a monotonous tone. His lectures were incredibly unhelpful, and he barely assigned any practice questions or exam problems despite his emphasis on completing them.
Before I selected this class, I read RMP and thought to myself "he isn't THAT bad as everyone says...right?" Let's just say, I would go back in time and slap myself. DO NOT TAKE HIM. HE IS ACTUALLY AS BAD AS THEY SAY. Apparently, he is not gonna be teaching Chem 131 next year. Class of 2030, ya'll lucky.
Went to every single lecture, cannot tell you anything I learnt throughout all of them. Be prepared to self study the entirety of the course. The textbook is overly complicated, especially for an entry level chemistry course. Exams are always a shot in the dark, it is impossible to know what will come up on them.
This man is basically Helen Keller. He cannot see that his tests make no sense and all his students are failing. And he cannot hear the cries of students nor can hear himself spewing absolute nonsense that won't help us on the exam.
The most ridiculous, heinous, and all-around stinky exams I've ever taken, but at least the curve at the end of the semester is alright. Prepare for a lot of self studying.
John Caradonna is like the Epstein files. Everyone anticipates straightforwardness and transparency, but what you actually get is a bundle of redactions that keeps you on your toes until the semester's end. You'll hear rumors from the TAs about whether the tests will be curved, but you'll never truly know what happens behind those closed doors.
While the exams were a bit difficult, the discussions gave a good idea of what would be covered, and the lectures Caradonna gave were very straightforward. He explained each unit thoroughly, and by the end of the day, you could really retain the information well each week, preparing you well for exams. Also, his Phoenix policy is amazing.
This is a cram class. Prof C did very few (if any) worked examples in class. Homework was assigned inconsistently and did not resemble the exam problems. Would recommend finding someone who is good at chem and getting them to teach you how to solve the problems instead. Had a pretty generous curve, though.
Professor Caradonna means well. However, his tests were extremely difficult, and it was hard to know what you needed to know for the class. It felt like things were often overcomplicated, and I had to self-study most of the content. If you take him, good luck
I'm an atheist and I still prayed to god before every exam in this class.
