A liberal, but a GREAT teacher. Definately one of the best/ funnest teachers at U of Oklahoma. Highly recommend. This guy will have you rolling with laughter by the time you leave class.
A great professor!!!
He is very liberal, very opinionated but grades fairly, but always check your answers to the test when he hands them back because he has a tendency to screw up.
This Prof is great! Hilarious and knows his subject very well. He definitely leans toward the left of the political spectrum, but even if you don't agree with him, you'll learn a lot in his class.
Amazing professor. His class is fun to go to because he is so funny.
This professor is incredibly funny, and has an excellent way of keeping students interested in what he's lecturing. He definitely knows his subjects well, and is able to teach while making the class fun.
An easy A, and his sense of humor gives him a good repertoire with students. His liberal bent, however, creeps into too lectures a little too much (and I'm a liberal too). Read the book, do well in his class, but expect some amount of preaching instead of teaching.
definitely liberal and opinionated but hes very funny and a very good teacher. he makes it easy to remember the things he teaches because he makes the subject very interesting. i would recommend him to anyone. hes very helpful but like i said, preaches a little much instead of just staying to the subject
This guy was the most harsh prof I have taken in my 4 yrs, so far! He gives a busload of info during class, really fast... No study guides... No review sessions... Detailed questions on his quizzes and exams, but they are all multiple choice & true and false... NOT AN EFFICIENT WAY OF TEACHING!!!-- I was supposed to have Grasmick!
I had this class in the fall. It was harder than Grasmick, but he did review, and gave study guides. He needs to post notes, but it was interesting. Most people made B's or better not easy but interesting and worth it.
He is the best prof I have ever had. He is funny and very real. He uses real life examples. He is highly educated and has a vast array of experience. Go to class and take the quizzes, read the chapter before hand. Tests aren't too hard if you study. I would take a class from him any time! It rocks!!!!
He is pretty much a jerk. This class is easy, but he sucks. Don't take it for an upper-division elective... try something else.
A great class. An excellent choice for upper division elective. I'm a business major... and I enjoy going to class. You don't HAVE to go... but you'll miss the quizzes which are majorly easy and give you lots of points.-
A great class. Not too hard. I really learned a lot and he's a great teacher. Take this one for an upper division elective
I expected to have Dr. F, but got him instead. I couldn't be more pleased. He was awesome. The exams were fair and he made the subject interesting.
Dr. Carl is entertaining and knows his field of study well. Although attendance isn't mandatory, it's definitely helpful to go to class, as a good portion of the exams are derived from his lectures. There were 4 exams, all MC & T/F. One "paper" - a fairly easy annotated bibliography assignment. Overall, a very good course.
Took this class spring 13 because a Friend suggested it. It was AWESOME. This guy is clear, funny, and helpful. I wish he had more classes I could take. I would take them all... AND... I learned a lot. Since I'm pre-law this topic was important to me.
This class is very interesting. Regular quizzes for attendance. Some were merely sign in... so you have to come to class. exams are clear... papers are 3 page essays... very doable and a fun prof. Take him.
One of my favorite professors at OU. He is really interested in what he lectures about and has real world experience that makes lectures really interesting.
Always in a good mood when he got to class, which really helped in the learning process. (Criminology)
Great guy and funny however the test are hard even though they are all multiple choice.
This has been one of my favorite classes I've taken so far. Dr. Carl is an amazing educator and really knows what he is talking about (he wrote the text book for this course!).
The tests are multiple choice and tf. One test had an essay but it was relatively straightforward. He has pop quizzes but most were sign in quizzes. He goes off topic on occasion but he's very interested in the subject material and will keep you interested. He occasionally calls people out in class and asks questions.
I was dreading Sociological Theory, but Dr. Carl REALLY knows his stuff and I actually became very interested in the class. Uses lots of good analogies to help you understand. Go to class, study the reviews he writes, and you'll be fine. He's also an undercover comedian, apparently. Really funny dude, cracked me up.
Dr. Carl is such an awesome professor! It is obvious he cares about the material he is teaching. Attendance is not mandatory, but he gives quizzes every once in a while that you need to be in class for. But at the end of the semester he drops two of them. The material is not necessarily easy, but he always posts a study guide before exams. 1010
Dr. Carl is an amazing lecture. I die laughing in class every day and the information really sticks. He gives pop quizzes so you have to go to class, but other then that it's an great class. Very easy A if you're willing to pay attention to his lectures and look over his study guides. Buy the book! He wrote it. Test questions come right out of it!
Although attendance isn't mandatory, you never know when he will give a quiz. Many times, a "quiz" consists of signing your name to a sheet of paper and turning it in to show you attended class. He is quite entertaining to listen to and obviously knows the subject very well (he is the author of the text book). He is an excellent teacher!
Dr. Carl is without a doubt the best professor that I have had at OU. I took all three of the courses he teaches. He assigns short papers based on assigned readings, his tests are usually multiple choice/TF with the occasional oral exam. He is a fair grader, amazing lecturer, funny, entertaining, and helpful. If you have the choice, chose Dr. Carl.
He makes his lectures interesting, especially with his jokes. There are several papers due for his class but they aren't too long. You need to study for his exams to make a good grade. His lectures slides are very helpful for studying for his exams.
This class is not too hard but Mr. Carl is not very helpful either. When you email him he rarely responds and if he does it is not prompt.
Prof. Carl is very intelligent and a very entertaining lecturer. He doesn't check attendance but he does have random 5 question true false questions that does make you feel obligated to go to class. His tests are fairly easy and all multiple choice and true or false. He is very bad about getting back to you if you have questions.
Dr. Carl handles a very large class well. I came to speak with him and he really helped me, being new to college he was a great prof to have. His tests are not "easy' but they're definitely passable, and the lectures are really entertaining and interesting. Makes me want to change my major to Sociology.
Dr. Carl is an amazing lecturer. He does give surprise quizzes in class for "attendance". His tests aren't too difficult either. As long as you come to class you should do great! This guy is hilarious too.
He is honestly the best professor I have ever had. I will never forget this class. He makes everything really clear and really knows what he's talking about (he wrote the book). He's also very funny and relatable! Do not take anyone else! Just be ready to read the chapters before class (he gives pop quizzes but they're easy if you read). Great guy!
Dr. Carl is my favorite professor I have had in college. He is incredibly knowledgable about the subject and has a ton of real world experience working in this field. He is an extremely charismatic and entertaining lecturer. His tests are straightforward and directly off of the lecture slides. I will happily take another class with him if possible.
Strongly recommend this class, he is very entertaining and if you show up you will do well
He's awesome. If you aren't interested in sociology, take this course anyways. He'll make you fall in love with it. Note cards are a must!! LOTS of terms and people are covered every day so make sure to start early.
I took his online Sociology class the month of June in 2016 and it was awesome. He replies quickly to emails, is very clear in his instructions, and is willing to help if you are confused. Would highly recommend taking this class.
Fun class. If you have to take the class he tries to make it enjoyable.
Dr. Carl was a great professor, really knows what he is talking about and is very passionate about sociology (specifically criminology). Cares about his students. Gives a lot of random pop quizzes, half of which were sign in quizzes. The other quizzes are over the book, which he wrote. Honestly enjoyed his class, funny lectures.
Dr. Carl was an awesome professor. Pop quizzes are pretty easy (he drops your lowest 3), and homework is very simple. The only thing is how heavily weighted his tests are. I had an A all semester until the midterm (in which I received an 82) and it dropped me to a B. Study hard for exams and show up because his lectures are fun!
Hands down my favorite Sociology professor! He makes lectures enjoyable, his quizzes are EASY T/F questions, and his TAs grade really easy! The midterms and finals are weighted heavily, but if you go over the study guides he post then you will do just fine. He also tries to bring real life issues into his lectures! Woke af professors tbh.
Easy class for a first semester freshman. The homework assignments aren't hard, and you can always message the TA for help. His exams are on the the harder side mostly because of the TF questions. Everything can be found in the slides and his book. After this course, I'm minoring in Pre-Health Social Sciences because I enjoyed the class a lot.
I took Professor Carl over winter intercession (Fall 2016) and I would not take him again. While his course was easy (little to no studying on my part), he would consistently ignore my emails. I emailed him multiple times and received no response. One of the emails was a plea for help on his annotated bibliography and he blew me off.
I loved his sociological theory course. He related century old theories to present day and was funny and engaging.
Amazing professor, interesting class! Test material is taken straight from the lecture slides on canvas and he posts a review so you know exactly what to study. I only used my book to study. Most of the quiz grades are sign-in/attendance, but they are random throughout the semester (go to class!). Easy A, highly recommend!
He is an incredible guy, and you will learn so much from him. He's not always quick at responding to emails and I'm not sure how accessible he is outside of class. However, the material is always eye-opening and relevant, and the course itself is a fun and easy A. Take this course and this professor; you will not be disappointed.
For a large class, Dr. Carl handles it well. Class is well organized and expectations are clear. He gives study guides for tests and the writing assignment is an easy annotated bib, just follow directions and you'll be fine. Don't miss the in-class quizzes and you'll do well. Would definitely recommend and take again.
HE IS THE BEST. Dr. Carl is amazing and handles a large classroom with ease and confidence. He's older and truly just a goofy dad that wants to get you excited about sociology. He is really passionate about crime, the prison system, and specifically how drug charges differ among the income levels. HE ALSO GIVES POP QUIZZES ALL THE TIME SO REEEAAAD.
Shouldnt be to hard to get over a B in his class.
Dr, Carl is a great guy with a very interesting class. However, I do wish I would have taken a different soc professor who gives easy A's.
I really do not recommend taking this class. I did not enjoy Dr. Carl's lectures. He makes a lot of "jokes" but they get old really quick. There is a 5 point quiz in almost every class and the only time I got full credit was when he would occasionally give you points just for being there. He writes the book and you actually have to read it.
The in class quizzes are super easy but you need to take them if you want an A. He's got a lot of "dad" humor and I really enjoyed it. The class is huge and he handles it well. There is a paper that's pretty easy to make an A on, if you follow the directions. Basically if you come to class, you'll make a B. If you try... you'll make an A.
He is my favorite professor I have ever Taken. This is not a blow-off class, but if you work hard and use what he gives you, you will make an A! he is entertaining and the lectures are always amazing.
I did not like Dr. Carl's class. He generalized many things and kind of stereotyped people in a rude manner. Sociology is one of my favorite subjects, but his lectures were extremely boring because he just said exactly what was on the powerpoint, which he posts online. You can get an A in the class if you read the book, class isn't really necessary
Great professor, no complaints and made an otherwise dull class required for sociology majors quite interesting. Hope to have another class with him in the future.
Avoid him at all costs, trying to keep it real simple.
Dr. Carl is an extraordinary and hilarious teacher but, dude.... the content is boring. Unless you are passionate about sociology (no hate). The tests and pop quizzes were the most difficult for me (since i didn't pay much attention in class), but the homework and annotated bibliography paper is super fun and easy!
Attendance is NOT mandatory but gives out random pop quizzes. Tests weren't easy but not super difficult. He's hilarious but lectures can sometimes be boring if you aren't interested in sociology. WOULD RECOMMEND!!!
Quirky but very funny and engaging. Very knowledgable in his field.
Dr. Carl is passionate and knowledgeable in the Sociology/Criminology fields. His class was interesting, very lecture heavy and the assigned readings were super easy. He makes corny jokes but it could be worse. Pop quizzes are random but if you do the reading and look over the notes, you'll do fine. Attendance isn't mandatory but recommended.
Awesome funny professor - would defiantly take again. Not easy but not hard, show up and pay attention and youll do fine
The first exam covered chapter 1-3 and I believe he didn't cover chapter 3 before we had it on the exam. He blabbers a lot in the course so the lectures are dry. You can probably learn the material at home, but he has in-class pop quizzes.
Just try to take someone else if you can. This class should be fairly easy, but it wasn't. I had to put in a tremendous amount of effort and still did not make an A. The material isn't even hard, but his tests are super specific and have a ton of true/false, so you either know it or you don't. Thank you, next
i loved this class. I don't know why people rated him as they did. The guy gave study guides and if you came to class you had to be brain dead not to make a B. His lectures were awesome. Loved it.
Dr. Carl has been my favorite professor at OU. I took his Criminology class, took his Inside/Out class with him (prison class), and now will be his T.A. for Intro. He definitely makes you work for the grade and gives pop quizzes. If you're the easily offended type, maybe don't take this class. Gotta have some thicker skin. Super fun to learn from!
This was an online, 1000 level class, so I'm not sure how applicable this is, but this is the worst experience I've had so far at OU. He obviously put next to no effort into the class (he copied exam questions and made too many painfully obvious errors to count), never gave any feedback whatsoever, and never responded to any of four emails I sent.
I took this class in the summer online. He gives you plenty of time to do assignments, and the quizzes and exams are pretty easy. Its not super easy, but it was an easy A for me.
Im in my first college class and knew nothing about sociology. Dr Carl is the best class I have. If youre needing intro take him. Lectures are funny and fascinating. Tests and homeworks are manageable. Im not a major but I want to take more sociology.
Dr. Carl is funny and has great lectures, although tests are difficult for a 1000s course and since he uses his own textbook, if you don't understand a concept it can be difficult to catch up. Other than that he's great and touches on social issues from all viewpoints and perspectives, would take again!
I really had to work to make an A in this class. The tests are filled with "you either know it or you don't" type of questions, which also means that you CANNOT skip class. Be prepared to take detailed notes on everything that comes out of his mouth. However, his lectures are amazing. You can tell Dr. Carl really has a passion for sociology.
If you want to pass the class, go to every lecture so you don't miss quizzes. Keep up to date with the homework because he won't remind you. He is very knowledgable and isn't afraid of offending people with facts. The exams are difficult and have numerous trick questions. Overall, the course was interesting, but there is a lot of info to cover.
Great lecturer. Doesnt require attendance, but the pop quizzes make attendance a necessity. Difficult exams with very detailed questions and some trick questions as well. Be sure to take advantage of all extra credit, youll need it. Definitely NOT an easy A.
Dr. Carl has been one of my favorite professors at OU. He is very straightforward, engaging, and intelligent. He is notorious for his pop quizzes and he does not write easy tests but if you pay attention and read the textbook (which he wrote) you should be just fine.
Amazing, hilarious professor, as long as you aren't easily offended! The textbook isn't really necessary until the tests, which he pulls some material directly from the text that wasn't mentioned in class. The class was easy up until the exams. Prof. Carl writes overly difficult exams for such a low-level class. Overall, the class was entertaining.
Took Dr Carl for intro to soc! This class is pretty straightforward and is easy if you study for the tests. It's not too much work, but he gives pop quizzes during lecture so you have to go most of the time. Dr. Carl makes the material interesting and really cares about the subject!
Dr. Carl is a great professor. He is very passionate about sociology and his lectures are amazing. However, his tests can be challenging and they make up most of your grade. You definitely need to put a lot of time and effort in this course if you want to make an A. If you are only taking this for gen ed credit, I would recommend another professor.
THERE ARE EASIER PROFESSORS TO TAKE FOR SOC1113. I MEAN, WAY EASIER. THAT'S ALL.
Definitely worth your money. Lectures and tests come directly from the slides, extra assignments, and textbook. Show up and read the book and you'll do fine.
The class is an easy A if you show up and study. Lots of memorization. He has pop quizzes but they are basically open note. Tests are not that difficult just study the notes. I barely used the textbook.
One of the best professors at OU! His lectures are super interesting and engaging and he is an easy grader!
Dr. Carl is a good professor that definitely knows his stuff about sociology. Before we had to move to online due to Covid, the exams contained a bunch of information and I had to study/memorize a lot of material. The lecture powerpoints are also posted online if you don't attend class. The homework and quizzes are very duable.
Prof. Carl is engaging and a ton of fun even in a class of 400. His class is lecture-heavy but he calls on students often and roams the aisles so your eyes don't do the glaze-over thing from staring at a screen too long. He genuinely cares about students and his subject area, plus he's hilarious. 11/10 would recommend.
I took his class for SOC1113 and I'm so glad it's over. His lectures were extremely long and not very helpful. He would talk during the whole class, but not really over material that was on the slides. You have to show up to class to get a good grade. He had 15 pop quizzes and some of them were just participation, just show up and you'll be fine.
Dr. Carl was one of the best teachers I have had in college. I took his class as a GenEd but thoroughly enjoyed it. Dr. Carl genuinely cares about your learning and is a very fun lecturer. There are quizzes often so be sure to stay up on your reading and come to class. The exams seem intimidating but are straight out of lecture/readings!
I wish I took another professor. His exams have tricky questions that are not part of the book material. He grades harshly on quizzes.
I took this course fully online and didnt learn much. His tests were all multiple choice and super easy. There was no feedback given for written assignments such as discussion posts and research notes, but given that he has hundreds of students in this class, Im not surprised.
He is a great professor that understood the pandemic very well. Lectures were a must watch and exams were very easy if you studied. Lots of research notes but they aren't as bad as you'd think.
The busy work in the class is so easy, but the exams are so hard for no reason. You think you are going to do good on the test and then you fail
I took this online, and honestly I don't feel like I retained much, though I think maybe sociology just isn't my thing. He seems like a nice enough professor, the work is very straightforward, but some of the tests are more difficult that I expected for an intro class. Cool dude overall, but talks a lot in lecture, so be prepared for that! :)
I have been a straight-A student in multiple hard science classes; however, his class was extremely difficult due to the way he weights his grades. I had an 83% in his class for the first 8 weeks and somehow managed to end with an 89. The exams are not over anything that is covered in lectures and the exams are a huge chunk of your grade.
I enjoyed Crim because it was interesting, but it was not my favorite class. There are 5 papers, 15 quizzes, 15 discussions, and 3 exams. You read his book and a textbook. It is hard to know what is on the exams and you only get to see each question once during the timed exam. He also takes away points for late work, even if somebody dies.
The lectures themselves are enjoyable, the work load isn't even terrible. The terrible thing about this class is the exams. I am an A-B student and I do a lot of studying, but unless you memorize the entire textbook front to back and can read Professor Carl's mind, you won't do well.
John Carl is a nice guy and appreciates if you go to class. However, he wants you to eat, sleep, breathe sociology. If you are taking this to fill gen ed do not take him. It will not be an easy A. If you are interested in soc he will be a great fit. There is a 10 q quiz each week and a 50q quiz every 4 chapters. His class is a b average.
The class was technically in person, but Dr. Carl had an option for students to do everything remotely over Canvas which is what I chose to do. Dr. Carl was quick about responding to emails, he was very interesting during the lectures. He was laid back and helpful as well. I only wish I had felt more comfortable attending the class in person.
If you want a Professor that is understanding and willing to work with you during emergencies, TAKE LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE. Missed one exam due to an emergency, he refused to help me and was quite rude about it. Dropped me to a D and I had to scramble to leave with a C. Im an A-B student. Do not recommend
I loved Dr. Carl's class. He understood my covid concerns and made the class accessible for me. His material was up to date and the course feedback was quick. It was my first semester in college, and I was lucky to have had him in class.
Dr. Carl set up this class as a hybrid but made it easy for students who were concerned about Covid to do well without having to risk attendance. The course is well organized and when I emailed him he always responded. He teaches large classes and always responded to me when I asked. I would take him again in a minute.
For the Intro to Soc class I took in Spring of 2021, he was very accommodating and detailed his lectures and posted PowerPoint slides to use for studying. Would recommend him for this intro class.
I took Soc. Theory because I had to. I was NOT looking forward to it. However, I could not be more surprised. Dr. Carl is able to make the ideas of these old thinkers relevant to todays' world. Each class he blows my mind, don't miss lectures. The oral exam is no big deal. I feared it, but afterwards loved it. Take this class!
Dr. Carl was a great prof! I took his hybrid class, and was able to do everything (exams, discussions, watch lectures) all from my computer. The whole class is composed of a discussion and 10q quiz a week, three exams, and a final. I thought it was pretty easy, and the material was super accessible. Would definitely recommend.
Had canvas set up wrong all year to where every student thought they were going into the final with a higher grade than they actually had. Lied on syllabus about how many questions would be on final exam. Was unwilling to communicate with students about their grade at the end of the year.
This is an easy B class. Course was well organized and I did not see issues as others here have claimed. He was very accommodating to me when I had Covid and was super nice about it. I learned a lot. Making at A is certainly Doable if you do all the assignments.
- fine until finals week - put in finals grade twice and dropped my grade - should have had an A but got a B instead - rude emails - He had said that we did not need to attend the in-person lecture because they were online but on the final exam he had questions that said "in class...". He also lied about the final exam question count.
Dr Carl is pretty direct and I like it. The class was weekly quizzes, four exams, weekly discussions and some Papers. He allowed us to replace a low test grade by recording the final twice and that really helped me out. Loved the class.
Took Inside-Out with Dr. Carl. Every OU student should go with him to the prison for class. One night a week you go to Mabel Bassett and you get to have class with incarcerated women. Dr. Carl handles the class perfectly... its always fun, but interesting too. I had him for some other classes in the past, and this class is by far the best!
Went to every class. Carl was always fun and interesting. If you go to class this is a super easy A assuming you do all the other work.
This class was not bad. I would take again. Attendance is mandatory through pop quizzes given almost every day, sometimes twice a day. The exams are difficult, but the insane amount of quizzes raise your grade. He was a nice professor. This class was no where close to the worst, but not the best either. I recieved a B and I feel as if most did.
Professor Carl is engaging and informative. His experience shines through as he is very knowledgeable in his field. The assignments are easy but the exams are difficult. Going to class helps, but is not mandatory for a good grade. Professor Carl is a great professor that teaches relevant, real-world material.
The thing I hated about him though was his communication. By far the worst communicator I have ever met. If you miss something don't even bother trying to talk to him about it he will either ignore you or send back a super passive-aggressive way to blow you off or just write the rudest email you have ever gotten from a professor.
I would highly recommend Carl. His lectures are long, but you can tell that he tries to keep the students engaged, and enjoys teaching. He gives in-class quizzes, so although attendance isn't mandatory, I wouldn't make a habit of skipping. Tests are long, but multiple choice.
The assignments are easy and the tests are more difficult. Attendance isn't mandatory but Dr. Carl keeps his lectures fun and applicable to college life so go to lectures. Overall low maintenance class. I really enjoyed this class and feel like I learned a lot on the theories of criminal behavior.
I had some personal issues this semester and Dr. Carl could not have been more accommodating. The course is mostly about crime theory but he intermixes real world stuff into the lectures which make it interesting. When I met with him during office hours he was always helpful. The class is an easy B... Go to class you'll learn alot
He was a very engaging teacher and by paying attention to his lectures you will be able to pass his exams. He does do 13 pop quizzes a semester so attendance is important but the quizzes are usually not too hard. Nice and funny teacher overall would recommend.
Loved his lectures, the readings were just the right amount and were very helpful!!
Have never laughed so hard in a class before.
You don't have much homework, it is mostly quizzes and research notes (which he provides a article for u to read). His teacher assistant can grade harsh, not give much feedback. He was funny and got the whole class involved in lectures. Attendance isn't required but I wouldn't recommend missing class unless you have to.
Dr. Carl will challenge your thinking. The class as a lot of ways to improve your grade, and hes' very helpful. I had some health issues and he was very kind. Lectures are funny and interesting... if you're a freshman... you can['t go wrong here.
I took social theory because it was required. You don't "HAVE" to attend class, but if you don't go you're missing some of the most insightful lectures I've ever had. He makes things relevant to today. I ended up loving theory which I would never have guessed, even though I didn't get an A.
Dr. Carl is amazing! Best lectures I have ever attended, and he gives out great resources. Be prepared to take a short quiz everyday and make sure to pay attention in class. A lot of what he talks about during lectures will be included in his quizzes/tests.
Wonderful teacher. Will catch you cheating. The final is in person. He is a great person that would work with you if you email him. He is very funny.
Fun class, not to difficult, exams are the main challenge. Great teacher.
John had great lectures full of interesting information. It's clear he enjoys his job. The in-class quizzes generally happened on Wednesdays and were fairly easy if you paid attention to the lecture. The wording on exams were a little confusing but not horrible if you studied properly.
Be prepared for the final to be very true/false heavy, either know it or fail. He may be the worst professor when it comes to communicating in a kind manner. Also be prepared to hear all of his political views, which even if you agree with, it was still overkill.
great professor and has really funny/entertaining lectures, but not as great for intro as opposed to major-specific classes. the class has homework quizzes, 5 response essays, and 4 exams including the final. the exams are a definitely challenging so be sure to study!
Just finished the class. The final exam was so easy, I have NO idea what a previous rater is talking about. The final exam saved my grade because if you do better on it, than a previous test you get to count it twice. That brought me up to an A. And yes.. there were TF/MC questions on it, but they were so easy. He's fun. Take him
Great class. Great lectures. Easy A if you use the study guide and go to class
loved the class... easy A. You do need to actually use the study guides he gives... and attend to not miss the in class quizzes... but other than that... super easy.. He's a great lecturer.
Super funny. He goes fast through the notes, but the bold terms are the most important. He assigns research notes which are just short papers you have to write after reading a passage or watching a ted talk. They aren't hard, but some people made bad grades bc they didn't answer the prompt or actually read/watch what we were supposed to
Carl is a Great Lecturer. The class is mostly exams, quizzes, and a few short papers. Definitely worth taking
Great guy. Lectures are interesting, funny, and keep you engaged. Has pop quizzes but if you keep up with what topics are being discussed then it's a easy 100. Has 5 papers due in the course but it's easy and spaced out. Make sure to study for exams because they're difficult but he'll give points back if majority missed a question.
I didn't like the pop quizzes because it made it hard for me to prepare for other classes that required me to review before class- which led me to leave at least 10-15 minutes before class ends. I like to be prepared and plan everything. I got a lower grade partially because of it. Otherwise he's laidback. The tests can be confusing sometimes
WATCH EXAM DATES. He gives good lectures, he will call on people randomly for their opinions. He's friendly and the work is easy enough. He only announced the upcoming exams in class and a lot of people were absent for the first exam, check the course schedule for the exam dates. Random attendance quizzes.
Dr. Carl is a very kind person but it is veryyyy lecture heavy. I felt that the units were very scattered as far as topics. Ex. Child psychology & Homelessness were in the same lecture? Go to class because he will surprise you with pop quizzes as attendance
This is a pretty easy A and as many have said, his lectures are funny. He wrote the book you read, and basically if you do the readings and attend class the in-class quizzes are really easy. Sometimes he does sign-in quizzes as well. Loved the class.
Professor Carl's lectures are engaging and informative. Attendance is mandatory, but the quizzes and exams are manageable with study guides. Unstuck study was a great supplemental tool to prepare for tests.
oh my god. this professor is the funniest guy I have ever met. OH MY GOD the way I cackle in his class.. it's so embarrassing but he literally makes the entire class ugly laugh. TAKE HIS CLASS LOL, he will not disappoint. He's making me even consider a sociology major, the class is extremely interesting (huge props to his lecture methods) goated fs
Professor Carl's lectures often stray off-topic, skipping critical material later included on exams. Political commentary and personal anecdotes detract from the learning experience, leaving students unprepared and frustrated.
If you lean to the right this guy will make you mad. You have to go to class everyday because he does weekly pop quizzes. Makes jokes that are just gross and inappropriate. Wouldn't recommend.
Teaching style is very good at relating concepts to real life (considering it is real life) Class is not too difficult as long as you keep up with the readings prior to when he talks about them in class
I don't think I am sitting in the same class as some of these other raters. Lecture heavy class but he provides study guides... and the average grade in exams are always a B... I don't see any of the negative stuff that one person put in three times. Not perfect... but not some liberal brainwasher either. He's funny, and caring. Recommend.
I had some personal drama this semester and Dr. Carl could NOT have been nicer. He was very caring and helped me overcome things that many faculty just didn't seem to care about. He is really nice if you go talk with him.
He is a good professor. He comes off as condescending when he's teaching and calling on students, but he's personable outside of class. The lectures in class were detailed & long so make sure to decipher the parts you need v. filler info. The oral exam isn't bad, he grades easy on it so you do well. Very few grades so everything weighs a lot.
He is so funny and amazing, very passionate. Not very many assignments though so you have to do well on all of them if you're not a great test taker.
Easy A. Super Easy B. Class is mostly lecture but he's very interesting. I just finished the class and would definitely take him again for something else. Glad I took this class with him.
Go to class... do the online assignments... EASY A
He's seriously the funniest professor I've had at OU. If you guys have the opportunity to take his class, I'd definitely do it. I'd say take his class like in the morning if you can, because lectures can be a lil long sometimes but he makes it engaging. PLEASE LAUGH AT HIS JOKES. he will be so happy. he's amazing and super supportive
Take him... a super easy going guy... An A is easy to make.
Loved Dr. Carl's class... definitely taking him again.
This guy is awesome. Definitely take him.
I love Dr. Carl! I had a situation come up where I had to leave campus for a month, and he was so kind and helpful! I love his class so much, and his lectures were always so interesting! He does do random pop quizzes to track attendance, but they are super easy and easy points!
I've taken John Carl for both Criminology and Sociological theory. He is by far my favorite professor at the school. He is very lenient and understanding. If you have the option to take him for a class I highly recommend!
Super funny and you can tell he really cares about what he teaches. Always was able to break down subjects and make them understandable. Exams require actually knowing what the material means and how it can be applied to the real world so studying is important.
My first semester at OU and so glad I took Dr. Carl. It was by far my favorite class. Class is lecture heavy which he totally pulls off because he's super funny, and very interesting. Tests are pretty standard.. an A is easy to get... a B is really easy to get. Go to class... most of the in-class quizzes are sign in... EASY
great lecturer always making jokes to keep you engaged. class is basically entirely exam based. wouldn't round my 89.23 to an 89.5.
