This was a wonderful class! Professor Carlson is a great Professor and was there to help whenever I needed him. He even let me make up a quiz I missed! This class was online and I did exceptionally well in it! Take his class! He's wonderful! I promise!
Took as online class. Very easy and fun! Have to see 2 performances and either write a synopsis on them or take a quiz. Were 4 exams and 3 quizzes on short plays that you're required to read. He made the subject interesting and was very clear in how to make a good grade. It was an easy A. Would definitely recommend if you need a Fine Art credit!
I took this online and loved it. He is a wonderful teacher who provides numerous opportunities to achieve your grade. He's quick to reply to e-mails, communicates well and seems to really want his students to learn and enjoy the course. I took this as an elective and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
I think I might have put an entire hour a week into his class. Didn't study til couple hours before exam, went to some fun performances and watched the videos form of books on netflix. Yeah, I got an A!
Take this class online if you can! I did and got an A. If you are at ECU you have to see 3 performances and take a short quiz on each but if you aren't on campus you can see 3 performances in your area and write a paper on them. There are four tests and a couple of discussion boards throughout the semester. It's an easy class!
Take this class if you need an fine arts credit! I took it online and if you are organized and can keep up with assignments. The teacher is very helpful and reminds you when things are due
TAKE THIS MAN !!! i took his online class and its pretty easy. he sends you a reminder before every quiz. you have to read three plays, go see two plays and take a quiz on each but they're short quizzes. and there is no final exam. i would def. recommend him
Great teacher! He is very clear and funny. The class was fairly easy but the tests were sometimes tricky. If you do the study guides you'll do great. :)
Prof. Carlson is so helpful! He actually has a personality and will talk to you. He's pretty funny and kept us all interest in class. The work was easy, only 4 test and attendance points, you had to watch 2 plays and had quizzes on them. Take this class! easy A if you pay attention in class.
Carlson is a pretty cool guy. There are four test and there not too bad. And, a couple of small quizzes which are really easy. Attendance is required, but he keeps it interesting. It is a pretty easy fine arts credit.
Easy class. Awesome teacher.
The dictionary defines ‘Superlative’ as ‘of the highest kind, quality, or order, Surpassing all else or others; Supreme. ‘I define it as John Carlson. As a professor, as a leader, as a man, and as a friend, He is of the highest kind, quality and order; Supreme.
He is an amazing teacher! I recommend anyone who needs a fine arts and an easy A to take this class.
This is an awesome teacher! His class is so easy and interesting. Make sure you read the plays and see the plays he tells you to or you will fail the class.
If you take the class online, then purchasing the book is not necessary as all of the questions and answers are online. Skim over the powerpoints before each exam just in case. I got an A- because I completely forgot about a quiz or two. If you try, then more than likely you'll get an A. Missed quizzes and still was less than a point away from an A
He is a really nice, reasonable, and funny guy. He will talk to you if you're concerned about your grade. The class isn't hard because the content is mostly common sense.
Took this class online got an A. He has discussion boards every two weeks but they are very easy. You have to go to two plays and take quizzes on them but very easy if you go to the play. The test are straight from the powerpoint and you have one paper to do but its easy A paper.
Dr. Carlson is a must! If you are taking theater, take him!! He is by far the coolest professor ive had so far. He is funny and makes class fun. He knows this class is what people are taking just to take an art so he isnt crazy about knowing everything. His tests are kinda hard but he gives out a study guide so study it. I recommend him to anyone!
It's a straight forward class. All the outlines are on blackboard so you can follow along in class. You have to do some reading and attend some plays but it's a good class for the credit.
Professor Carlson is the man, one of my favorite professors I've had. Makes his lectures interesting and is also extremely helpful. If you don't study or go to class exams will be hard, but he gives you every opportunity to succeed with his helpfulness in and out of the classroom, great guy and highly recommend him.
Very helpful! I had trouble with the blackboard sever during a test and he was speedy with his replies to help fix the problem. Tests can be difficult because they cover lots of material. Easy class overall.
Professor Carlson is amazing! He is super nice and very helpful. The class is not that difficult as long as you go to class and study. His lectures are interesting and he is very funny. Would highly recommend.
Prof. Carlson is hilarious. He always cracks jokes during class and makes lectures interesting. He's there if you ever need help and you need to go see both the play and the musical. If you have a background in theatre or know a little bit about the history of theatre, then this class will be easy for you, plus reading the plays wasn't hard at all.
Go to class and you will do fine. Theatre is not interesting but he makes it tolerable. He's a great professor and I would take the class again.
He spends the majority of the class blabbing about who knows what and it is very hard to follow what he is saying. He says attendance is mandatory but near the end of year he starts to not take attendance. Test are pretty easy though if you do the stuff guides. Make sure you read all the plays and go watch all the performances.
He does sometimes take attendance, so you might not need to skip many classes. Test aren't too bad, he does give study guides. Lectures are long and boring.
For me, this class was difficult. I'm an A student and got a C on the first exam. The study guides doesn't very correlate well with the exams and I ended up dropping the class. The lectures are the worse. He extremely boring and had dry humor! I wouldn't recommend him.
He is an awesome teacher and very nice. Show up to class and you will get an A. Also go to his office hours and get to know him, it's worth it. Definitely recommend this class to anyone who needs a fine art credit.
He was a good, but for someone not majoring in Theater I was distracted. But easy credit.
TAKE THIS CLASS! I took online theatre 1000... and it was seriously the easiest class. You had maybe 1 assignment or test a week and most of the test questions are straight from the power point!
I thought he was great. It's a bit boring. But he is really nice and tries to help you get a good grade. Take him!
Easiest class I've taken at ECU thus far. Dr. Carlson knows that most people who take Theater 1000 are only there for an easy A, so he makes it an easy A. Do the study guide and you'll pass. Go to the performances and read the plays. He takes attendance, but there are so many people in the class that a friend can sign you in and he won't notice.
Dr. Carlson is awesome! He's really funny and makes it easy to go to his class. Definitely have to read the plays and go to the assigned ones, but other than that you really can't mess this up.
Very easy to work with & the tests are based on the PowerPoints. Easy A if you put the work in. Very kind professor and you can tell he cares about what he does!
Carlson is amazing, if you get the chance, get to know him (will help you with grades and everything). Seriously, take his class, I had an 86 at one point and now I have a 97 so... go be his friend
Fantastic professor. Attendance is iffy. Super nice and helpful. but beware, if you're not paying attention in class he will call you out. Overall super easy class.
All the notes get put on BB.
I loved my theatre 1000 class! John is hilarious and makes lectures so much fun. I would take this class again if I could. Easy A and fine arts credit!
John is a good professor who cares about what he is teaching but his lectures are very difficult to follow due to him rambling and getting off topic. His tests are challenging if you do not study.
Mr. Carlson is a funny guy, but this class sucks. He rambles a lot, and gets off topic, so it makes class drag on forever. His tests aren't hard because he gives you a study guide with exactly what will be on the tests. Easy A, just a boring class!!!
Very nice and funny guy. He gets so off track in class. Very boring but if you study you will get an A. Like 5 quizzes from plays you have to watch and 4 tests. Wasnt bad or really hard. Take him!
I took this class for an easy A for a fine arts credit and it has been one of my hardest classes this semester. He takes it way to serious and he knows that everyone in the class is just taking it for a fine arts credit. He's a nice guy, but still I wouldn't take him again.
He is the absolute best teacher at ECU. If you show up to class, and believe me he starts to notice who is there and who is not, you will pass no question asked. The tests are straight from the lecture and the power points. Take him for an easy and fun class!
He is such a good teacher! He cares about his students. lots of people skip, but he can tell who comes every class. He gives extra credit to students who show up when nobody else does. Gives a study guide. Don't buy the book or plays. Plays are online and use powerpoint slides. Will be mad if you come late. Lets you leave early every time
hes literally so nice and he really cares about his students. go to class and actually pay attention and go to the plays and you'll pass.
This professor is GREAT! He is genuinely a nice and caring person. He knows lectures especially at 8 am can feel drawn out and boring so he tries to make it somewhat interesting. There are quizzes that are easy and tests that you should study for. Overall this class was great.
His lectures were long and very off topic for the majority of the time. He loves to complain about his students coming in late for what seems like forever before getting to the point. I took theatre 3 years in high school and never got below an A+ and I struggled in this class.
A lot of discussion boards and little assignments but if you are organized and write it down in a planner where you won't forget it is an easy A. Make friends with people in the class because all of the answers are online for the most part, and if they arent you can ask others for help. Easy A and helps boost GPA. DO not miss assignments
If you attend class or keep up with the assignments and reading if taking online, Professor Carlson gives you everything you need to succeed. Great Professor, available and responds quickly. Study guides provided. I would take again, no questions.
Attendance is not mandatory, but KEY to getting a good grade in the class. You do have to attend 3 theatrical productions held by ECU (it costs money). Pay attention the whole time, he quizzes you on them. You don't need the textbook. His lectures are to-the-point, and he is very nice and funny. Just come to class and stay off your phone.
John, is the best! He's very understanding! Highly recommend taking him! We did have to attend 2 performances and were quizzed on it but it was very easy!
super easy. all the powerpoints are posted online. you don't need to go to class but sometimes he mentions certain things and he knows a lot of people don't show up anyway so he might bring some questions on that. Exams are literally the power points. no need for notes. don't come in late. he gets supper irritated.
I took him for Thea 1000. I never went to class bc he posted the notes online. There were quizzes for plays you have to watch. The play I saw was actually good. Exams are not hard bc he gives you a study guide.
Tests are on quizlet and discussion boards are easy. Notes are all on blackboard but you will only need to look at them for the discussion boards. He reaches out a lot throughout the semester and answers emails fast. Easy A. You do have to go to 2 plays at ecu and do a quiz on them but the questions are easy as long as you went.
Great professor! Honestly, super kind dude. Be respectful of him and he will be respectful back.
Super easy class especially when taken online. He's really laid back and wants you to succeed.
Very knowledgable professor. He only gives exams and quizzes but they're super easy if you just read the powerpoints. Attendance is not mandatory and you do not have to purchase the textbook. You have to attend 2 plays during the semester but they're actually interesting. Easy class of you need a Fine Arts credit. And it's offered online!
I took his class during COVID and he was very attentive to the students' needs. He loves theatre, as well as teaching it. John cares about his students and their wellbeing during the pandemic. Most of the information on the tests are in his powerpoints, I didn't find the textbook to be required.
Very easy class, Prof. Carlson is very thorough in his emails and will tell you cut and dry what needs to be done. Very easy tests and he also posts mandatory discussion posts. Pretty fun and easy class if you need it for a credit, 100% recommend. DONT LET THE SYLLABUS SCARE YOU, cause it did at first for me. Take the class!!!
Carlson is a really kind professor and the class is overall easy if you just complete the one assignment every two weeks!
Honestly, this class is so easy. You only have like 4 tests and 3 quizzes, but if you read the powerpoints and take notes they are so easy. You do have to see 2 plays and take quizzes on those plays, but they're simple questions like where was the play set and what job the main character had, etc. If you need an easy fine arts class, take this.
TAKE HIM. This is an extremely easy class and he is an extremely easy going professor!!
I loved taking THEA 1000 with John. He is passionate about what he teaches and that is clear during his lectures. I did skip class from time to time, but I read his PowerPoints on canvas and was fine. You attend two plays during the semester and have quizzes on them. This was my favorite part of the class. Head Over Heels was SO funny.
I adore Professor Carlson. I finished up with a high A in his class. His PowerPoints had all the info on them that you needed to review for all tests that were assigned. He is also extremely understanding and caring and was enthusiastic during his lectures in Theatre. You can tell he loves what he teaches. 10/10 teacher!
One or two quizzes a month and 3 tests all semester. The professor rarely emails, he just puts up the content and you take the notes. Pretty easy but the few quizzes can sneak by if you aren't thinking about them.
Very easy class! You do have to go watch 2 plays but the plays are actually pretty good and interesting to watch.
Professor Carlson is awesome! Responds very quickly and has easily accessible information. Class is an easy class to take and doesn't require too much time for a student with a busy schedule.
Professor Carlson is one of the best professors I have had during my freshman year and time at ECU so far. He cares about his students and it is impossible to fail his class. Go to class even if he doesn't take attendance still go to class and trust me you will regret it if you don't, as good things are given in return for going to his class.
I took this class and it was super easy, I got a 99%. Most definitely recommend taking this class. He responds back quickly and is always kind, and even gave the entire class a free 100% just out of kindness.
This class was a breeze. I knew nothing about theatre before taking this class.
Easy A class and the professor is really nice.
I absolutely loved Mr. Carlson!! If you take good notes and pay attention to his lectures, you will pass pretty easily. Always attend class!! It's not required but sometimes he will give out A's or credit just for showing up so you never know.
Class was pretty easy. Long lecture but good information. Test and quizzes were pretty easy. 1 mandatory play that you had to attend and take a test on it.
As someone who didn't know what a monologue was, theater with Mr. John was something new for me. It was a very cool experience and he gave very good goal oriented feedback throughout the course and while I'm probably not going to go and audition for anything, I still took away a lot. Definitely a course and a professor that I would recommend.
If you come to class everyday soon enough you will get free 100 on a test grade when no one is at class I didn't believe at first, but I almost didn't go to class but my mentor forced me to go and He gave a paper to write our names down and then soon enough he gave a 100 because only 20 out of 100 students went to class that day.
He's such a legend! He understands us! He gave us free 100's only if we attended every class. During Thanksgiving break at the last moment he emailed us and said because it's Thanksgiving / Christmas he gave us another 100 for our test. I would highly encourage to attend all the plays and classes to get well earned 100's!
amazing professor and extremely easy class. TAKE THIS FOR GPA BOOST. YOU WILL NOT FAIL. Test are all online you do have to attend a few theater plays or you can watch them online and he just gives out 100s just because. TAKE THIS CLASS, YOU WILL NOT FAIL
This class was very easy for the most part, and lectures were always interesting. It's very clear that he cares about the subject and he is very knowledgeable. There isn't a lot of homework or graded assignments for this class, but if you read the slides/watch the plays you'll be fine. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are incentives to show up.
Awesome Teacher!
So easy, I don't know who rated him worse than a 5, he was great. If you need the extra credit hours just take this online.
This professor is very understanding and nice. He responds to emails and is good at communicating. This class is only test and there are only 8 the whole semester and all are VERY easy. You do have to go to 2 required plays a semester but they are actually enjoyable. Take this course!!
The class is easy; you do need to attend at least two plays, but they are entertaining. If you have any questions or issues, he is very easy to contact.
Probably my easiest course, doesn't really give out much work but test and quizzes recommend to take him for theater 1000
This professor is great! The class is easy, and attendance isn't required, so you have a lot of flexibility. Quizzes and tests are straightforward, and there are only three tests total, with the last one counting as your final exam. Definitely a stress-free class and a good choice if you want an easy A.
