Very funny, easy going prof. and understaning. Clear in explaining

Great teacher! He made a potentially uninteresting class great! The class is tough and he expects a lot, but it is worth it. If you do your work and prepare for the speeches you will do just fine. I give him an A+++++

He was really nice and understanding. He gives all the work in advance, so if you find yourself bombarded with work, you have only yourself to blame. Not a BS class.

He's an interesting guy, very funny, always making comments. It gets old sometimes, but he keeps your attention through long classes. The class isn't hard, but you have to show effort, and attendance is important.

Not an easy class - you have to do the work (lots of speeches). He is very understanding of people's issues such as fear of speaking; having to miss class because of work; etc. He's flexible and gives all work in advance so its do-able. Fun class!

Class that you will like if your speaches are ready on time! Very helpful class and even expectations are high, you can learn a lot from this class, but you need to work hard for an A. Fun class... it was always nice to go back to this class...

He is a good guy (he's actually done stand-up before), but heed this common warning here- it's a big workload and you will have to work for that 'A'. 3 major speeches, 2 small ones, 2 quizes, and a huge group project. You're public speaking will def. improve, and you'll def. laugh, but be warned...

As a graduating senior who took this class at the 11th hour, I couldn't have asked for a better professor. He makes you work, but his methods are so seamless, natural and humorous that you don't realize how much you're learning (even if you're already a decent speaker). Take him if you can!

Castano undoubtedly works his class hard. I had class with him on Thursday nights 8:15-10:45 and I didn't fall asleep once. Just in saying that, I think he is great. You have to work hard for an 'a' but definitely worth it in the end. Jokes are funny...but predictible Castano.(i know you read these)

Professor Castano IS THE BEST! He is funny and great at giving advice about your speeches. Your speaking ability will increase for the better with Professor Castano. I like is grading and his fairness. Just make sure you are ready to speak and have fun! PS- there are serious times in class.

Very great teacher. Huge work load but great. I had him on Thursdays at 8:15 and never missed once and stayed awake! Thats a class to take huh? Call him "Cookies Castano" Our class came up with that, lol, I know your reading this Castano, so I did put a hot appearance for you!

very good teacher...puts a lot of emphasis on group speech, and is a tough grader. you have to work hard to get an A, but its defnitely a possibility, as long as u work hard on your speeches and listen to the feedback you are given. great teacher!

AWESOME TEACHER. Knows his stuff, only covers what matters. No busy work or anything. Tough grader, big focus on final group pitch. If u participate & listen to feedback you'll do well. Easy A if you just do the work (3 spchs, 1 quiz, final grp proj). He's hilarious too...if possible, TAKE HIM!!!

Lots and lots of work, he gives enough time to accomplish each task. He is availble to answeres all your questions. Very tough on final group projects but he is a great professor. Super funny, outgoing and nice on the eyes too.

John is one of the best public speakers I have heard! He is also a great teacher. You know he wants you to succeed. He made our class feel very comfortable from day one...I loved going to class each week. All the assignments were interesting. I even made a few friends for life here too! MSU should appreciate his efforts! I know our class did!

Castano is the man.. easily one of the best profs at MSU. Yeah he does grade pretty hard but he tells you exactly what he wants, plenty of time to accomplish it and really good constructive criticism. He made our class comfortable from day one, and hes a really funny guy. I'd totally recommend him to anyone.

great professor took him in my 1st year and now in my 3rd hes the greatest! gives work but def. do-able... take him if u can.. and he reads these so when u comment put that hes hot so hes happy when he reads them in class

He is a hard professor. A nice guy who is willing to work with you. He is helpful if you ask for it. The text book is awful and useless. He has a good sense of humor. As long as you do your work properly and show enthusiasm in the speeches, you will do alright.

The class is very demanding. The speeches are silly, and grading a complete farce, and attendence is mandatory. As for the professor, he loves the sound of his own voice, and thinks both him and his class are of utmost importance...they're not.

Class is interesting, professor is absolutely hilarious. Just come to class and do your work and you wont have trouble passing. He gives you ample chances for extra points after every speech, and the work isnt too taxing if you keep on top of it. Takes a boring subject and makes it interesting, If he tought other classes, Id take them too.

He's an amazing professor. I had him for first semester as a freshmen and i had the a lot of fun in that class. He makes every topic highly interesting and tries to help keep everyone at the top of their work. He totally took my fear away of public speaking. Thanks to him now i can do presentations for every class without a doubt.

Excellent teacher, but I think he grades WAY too harshly. Also, the group project is RIDICULOUS; it's impossible to get everyone together, and most of the work you have to do to finish it is COMPLETELY irrelevant to public speaking.

Great professor! Really got the most out of every single student in class so he knows what he's doing...Speeches are easy and the quizzes aren't too bad either...The Group project is really, really challenging, but he grades very leniantly on this one. Highly reccomend taking him for public speaking requirement!

Class was NEVER boring. My 5:30-8 class went by faster than some 1 hour and 15 min classes because every other sentence he says is funny. He knows how to keep your attention. If you do the work and go to class you'll do fine. Tests are challenging but they arent a large part of your grade. Castano WANTS you to improve and by the end, you will.

I really enjoyed this class. When i first started the class i wasn't really that interested. I am not a comfortable speeker and this helped me with improving my social skills

Great teacher, makes you work for your grade. 8:15p class on Thursday but he made it go by very fast, always makes you laugh. Final group project is a LOT of work but worth it in the end. anyone who gave john castano a bad rating was lazy. he wants you to work hard and improve your public speaking skills and if you do the assignments and follow his instructions, you will. its NOT an easy A, but if he see's your trying you will do well.

I really didn't expect much from the class. It's a speech class. Say a few words, and get an easy A! Unexpectation!!! What a class, what a professor. So much work, but it's a necessity in life. My perspective in public speaking has completely changed in every way thanks to Professor Castano. Very powerful speaker. Must take. Highly recommend it.

He's a great guy, really funny and makes you feel comfortable. If you hate public speaking, which I did, you should take this class. By the end of it, you feel relaxed and it's not so scary getting up there. the last project sucks and it's completely useless but it's better then being stuck with a prick who will make your life a living hell.

HILARIOUS! Professor keeps you awake with his jokes. Teaches you a lot. You can tell he enjoys the subject a lot. One midterm. No final. Just 3 small speeches and one super important speech. NOTE: Start final project ASAP. He can be an ass when it comes to questions,but it's because he wants to see who really put in the effort. TAKE THIS CLASS!

Pros: He's funny and you can learn a lot from his class cons: He's a super harsh grader, you'll never get out of class early,he takes his job too seriously, your speeches have to be close to perfect and his final project was created by satan himself i got a good grade in his class but if you want this class to be easy dont take him

The class was a complete pain, it felt horrible to sit there for 2:30h once a week. In fact, I would get out with a massive headache every single time. BUT it really was helpful, I give way better speeches since I took his class. Group project was a big hassle.

Funny Professor. Wants the best for his students. Difficult Final Group Project. He kind of takes this class too seriously. but at the end you do learn something. He gives good feedback when finish your speech. There are other classes where Speech could be an easy A. But this class you have to work for it, so Its up to you if you want an Easy A.

One of my favorite professors to date. He really cares about his students, and uses an individual approach to help all of them in a very personalized way. Looks out for the best interest of his students. GREAT sense of humor, very understanding, knows mean girls quotes, and you really learn alot, i overcame my fear of public speaking because of him

TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. If your afraid of public speaking, he makes you feel comfortable. He's VERY funny and makes class interesting. You fail after missing two classes but you'll never want to miss class. There's quiz's and four speeches, try your best and you'll get a good grade.

Funny sarcastic, overall pretty good sometimes makes the class interesting, takes the speeches seriously, hate the group project for final I feel its unnecessary. Had only 2 quiz but very little info did he gives on whats going to be on it

Lots of students cram before exams. He tries to distract crammers from retaining information by talking to the class before exams and by playing music from his phone DURING the exam. He is helpful for the most part, but sometimes he has rude sarcastic remarks. He sometimes can't leave the "improv" on the stage and brings it into the classroom.

His class is relatively easy, he is not looking to fail you, mostly just looking to make sure you leave the class with the ability to speak publicly. Yeah the group project is long and difficult but you should not be leaving it for the last day possible and he gives individual grades for it as well. I would take him again

I walked into this class expecting the worst, Professor Castano really makes it possible for you to understand public speaking and makes you comfortable at it by the end of the semester. He does make you work for it, and he grades you on improvement which he tells you how to acheive. I would take him again, get a head start on the project!!!

I hate public speaking but he gives you a lot of feedback on how to get better and is very sarcastic. Speeches are pretty easy but the group project final was really difficult because he expects way too much out of you. But after it was all said and done, I realized I learned so much from him and he actually helped me become a better public speaker

Great Professor. He cares about his craft. He teaches you a lot in one semester. You will leave way more confident than when you started public speaking. He will pick on you if you don't participate in class. As long as you do the three speeches and group project and try your best you shouldn't have a hard time passing. I would take the class again

I was absolutely terrified of taking a public speech class, but this prof. made the experience great overall. He used to be a comedian so he is absolutely hilarious. His lectures always leave you with a smile on your face. He's a pretty lenient grader on idividual speeches. The group project is a cool concept, but it was a little frustrating.

HE WAS SO FUNNY! He hones a passion for teaching this course and knows his stuff. I mean, he could come off rude sometimes, but you have to get his sense of humor and build a relationship with him, he'll remember that! The speeches are really simple the main thing is the group project at the same, THAT WAS HARD! He gets you with the questions!

He's awesome in the beginning and is very passionate about public speaking and making you a better speaker. He definitely made me a better speaker and the majority of the semester was easy and fun, but the group project is what gets you. The end of the semester sucks if you don't start working on it the minute you get it.

This class consisted of three speeches and a huge group project. If you are uncomfortable with public speaking, he will help you and make you better. However, he grades on how well you do not effort. Group project requires a lot of work, do not procrastinate.

Very great guy, also a tough grader. I love how he brings humor into his classes though. The group project is insanely stressful and frustrating and is the hardest part of this course. He has definitely helped me improve my public speaking anxiety, though he is a very tough grader.

Super funny guy, Professor Castano was a comedian at one point in his life and it shows in class as he makes class fun and lively. Castano is not the easiest grader however, he is super clear about what is expected and although he is not the easiest grader, he will make you a better speaker. He is the best professor I've taken. He doesn't always reply to emails which is why he always offers students to contact him another way offered. Attendance is mandatory in order to pass the class and he is a very strict grader who goes by the rubric. This class helps you grow despite the fear given. Be sure to start the project in advance!

Professor Castano is both fun/funny and serious. He wont let you slack off and doesn't let you disrespect him or your fellow students. If you are able to be respectful you will have no trouble paying attention because he is such a powerful speaker. He can truly get the attention of the room and knows what he is talking about when he gives feedback
