very professional
not willing to help student. not recommended
disorganized teaching. not willing to help students. - not recommended
His classes were primarly lectures, not much student involvement so it made class boring. He taught the class as if everyone should have known the information already. I had a difficult time keeping up with most of the recent HS grads...In addition, I didn't like his grading system, but overall he's fair.
He is a good teacher but his social skills are horrible! he doesn't care about talking to his students or even answering their emails(never!) he is not approachable at all...
This professor knows a lot about writting but his assignments are strange by the topics he has us write on... some of them you can not even find much information on them. I also wish he would answer his emails. Hes a good teacher but needs to be a little more helpful.
He is enthusiastic and prepared but it is difficult to communicate with him. Does not schedule appointments although available during office hours on a first come first serve basis. E mail is hit or miss, usually miss. Be prepared to be your own best advocate and demand help when you need clarification or assistance.
Terrible! Not clear in what he wants from you in his assignments. Dumb group project worth nearly half your grade. This class was painful to be in.
His class wasn't as bad as the previous comments make it seem. I didn't really like the RTAs though. Sometimes I had absolutely no interest in the topics! Overall, it's not a horrible class...you just have to be prepared to work for a good grade!! :)
A lot writting in this class. Every week you'll have a paper, plus 3 major papers throughout the semester. Hard to read him. His feedback is not that good.
very confusing
He shows ALOT of favortism. makes you do ALOT of worthless homework. and makes you write a million papers!
Was not very clear, and very dry. Class felt like it lasted for hours and hours. Not enough feed back from assignments no matter if you did bad or good on them. I do not recommend if you have a choice.
Be ready to write. He presents the material well, but a tough grader. If you want a warm fuzzy kind of a professor, look elsewhere. If you're willing to pay attention in class, understand the assignments, and work hard, then you'll be just fine in this one. That said, this was the most amount of work I've done in any class to date.
I had Castellarian twice in one semester - for english 102 and creative writing. All though difficult with his millions of papers and requirements, I learned so much from him. I couldn't have asked for a more challenging teacher.
Prof C will make you work for your grade, BUT he is a decent professor who will teach you what you NEED to get your degree or continue on to a 4 year college. You will become an expert at essay writing. Prof C was very understanding of my health problems and allowing me to keep up, and very fair. His classes can be a bore, but you learn a lot.
I thought his assignments were very purposeful and productive. All of these other people that are giving him bad ratings are people who just either sucked at writing or didn't like to do WRITING in a WRITING CLASS. So if you're actually interested in getting good at writing (with a good thesis/argument) then I recommend Castellarin.
hated this class. its all lecture and he's pretty repetitive. papers every week. sometimes the workload ODs. if you have other options I would take someone else.
grading system is unclear.you can do everything he says to do in the directions and still not get a good grade on an assignment.
He seems like a nice guy; however, his organizational methods are not very clear. Grades didn't come back for months, and some didn't come back at all.
Filed a complaint with the dean. Not once did this class receive a graded paper. Since I have begun attending school, not once have I never received a graded paper. Particularly with writing, graded papers with comments are extremely valuable. Professor only provided a rubric with a score. Bizarre!
He is a good teacher, however very serious about his job. If you are looking for a easy A this is not the class, but if english is your thing and you want to be challenged this is your class.
If you're expecting communication, instruction, clear presentation or prefessionalism, don't take this class. He doesn't answer email. He won't take the time to help you earn a better grade. Germanna should have standards for instructors. I give him a F-. He's definitely not a professional, nor is he what most people term 'teacher'.
His lectures are very dry and long winded. The more involved you are in the class the better your grade will be. Showing that you have read his assignments and know what to talk about in class are a major plus for him. READ the assignments and TAKE the quizzes. You may think that they don't mean much but the add up. Take them!
This class was supposed to be on campus but with the earthquake closing the main building it got moved to online.Well that then provided his excuses for not providing grades in a reasonable time,I saw others who said he never provided grades on time either. His assignments are lacking a clear idea of what he wants, and he is a hard grader.Dont take!
Unfortunately, it took half a semester for any assignments to be graded so it was impossible to learn much from this class. The material is excellent, but the organization is not.
You can tell he's very passionate about his work and that can either be a good thing or a bad thing in this case it's bad, very strict grader is not leniant at all.I've never not passed an English class but I'm certain this will be my first :(
Always graded late .I was passing the class with an A until he graded a 5pg paper a month late which failed my entire grade.
I've always gotten good grades, and at first I did, however the two 500 point papers basically determine your entire grade, and he is a very strict grader therefore all the 10-50 point assignments that you get 100s on won't do much for you.
This class was not easy but if you do the work and really put forth effort, you will earn a good grade and leave a better writer. It was challenging but I pulled off an A in the online class. The work leading up to the two 500 point papers is crucial so you can't blow off any reading or assignments and expect to do well.
The lectures are in depth and dissect argumentation to a fine level. The work load is high with two major papers and short papers each week. If you are an average student skip this class, if you are above average and are able to complete the assignments you will learn much. Papers are graded late which is a huge negative.
he is a very powerful speaker...LISTEN! Also, read the book cause he references it in class. Class is easy if you listen and just do your work...with EFFORT.
I have always recieved A's in English and I know I write good paper. However with him I continued to recieve bad grades. If you can take someone else, TAKE THEM. I wouldn't refer him to my worst enemy. This class will mess up your GPA as it did mine.
I had a tough semester with him and ended up coming out with a B after working so hard with countless bad grades. John likes you to write very to the point and mechanic. He lacks emotion and if you want help I wouldn't bother, he feels he's superior to you and won't give you eye contact. Save yourself & take someone else
Does not make assignments clear. However, will spend 1 hour repeating the same thing 20 different ways. Makes it very clear that you will not meet his expectations. Extremely harsh when it comes to grading. He will make it very clear he is the expert and you know nothing. If you are not a strong academic writer DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Taking this class online is not easy. Even if you're a talented writer, with skills far exceeding mine, expect a challenge. Two 10-page essays are 52.6% of your final grade. Note that MLA is used on the first paper, and APA on the second. Pay attention to all due dates and communicate with him when you have issues--you should do fine.
This class is not easy but it shouldn't be. If you write within the parameters of what he tells you, you will do fine. I pulled out an A and have been out of school for more than 13 years. He's not warm and fuzzy or even understanding but meet the deadlines and follow instructions exactly and all will end well.
He is by far the worst english teacher I've had in my life. He is not clear at all about his assignments. He is very dry in class. There are no in-class assignments. The one assignment he gives you is to write two 10 page papers on an argument, both about the same topic. He told us that 90% of us will not meet his expectations. I usually get all As
I came into his class expecting to learn something meaningful. But what I got in return was 1 hour and 15 minutes of dry lecture and very few assignments. It's hard to sit for that amount of time with nothing to do but listen and take notes. Implementing some form of in-class writing assignment would do well for this professor's future courses.
He gets straight to the point with his lectures, I appreciate that he does not mess around and starts and ends class right on the dot. Most student do not like him because they do not listen or ask questions or put any effort in their essays. But if you actually want to improve your writing, Castellarin is a great teacher.
STAY AWAY! Impossible to impress. lectures are long and repetitive. All outside class assignments and responses to papers are done online and very unclear of what needs to be improved. Two 10 page papers on same topic rules your grade, if you do poorly on those kiss your grade goodbye.
Make no mistake, this is not an easy course. He is challenging and can come off as very cold shouldered, but it helps you in the long run,IMO. After taking this course I feel far better off intellectually. If you want a challenge I would highly recommend this course. My only complaint is how long it takes to get grades back.
This class is pathetic, honestly if you can switch to another professor, then do so. He just likes to lecture about the same stuff over over and the lectures have no point to them. His grading is really really tough, all thru high school I did pretty good in English like A's & B's. I am almost failing this class now.
Never EVER responded to emails, graded everything late, didn't care about the students or care to help us with questions, lectures were like story time, had no relevance to the assignments. worst class I have ever taken.
This professor is not too difficult. I think he grades practically and provided feedback on assignments as long as you paid attention to blackboard success is not out of reach. He also seemed very intelligent and wanted to keep his classroom involved during lecture. Understanding!!
Professor Castellarin is a tough cookie to crumble. I had him for both 111 and 112. He wasn't nearly as critical in 111 as he was in 112. He is very challenging. That's something I like because I tend to get bored if I'm not. Listen to him, check blackboard regularly, and do all of your work and there's no reason you won't get a good grade.
I am in the process of writing 2 books, and hold a GPA of 3.6 in school. According to Mr. Castellarin, I am only capable of writing D and F level essays. A 500 point essay was destroying my grade. He told me my argumentative essay was based on preference and that is a fallacy, therefore my paper was based on fallacy. I received 255/500 points.
I wouldn't recommend him to anyone who isn't already a really decent writer. He doesn't do peer editing, he's extremely picky, and he's pretty unsympathetic. However, I learned a lot in his class, much of which has helped me a ton in my other classes. Lectures are painfully boring but if you can manage to pay attention, he gives useful information.
teachings does not make sense has nothing to do with the essays that has to be done bi-weekly
He is very strict. He is also very picky and will grade harshly. You have to write two 7 page papers in this class. I don't recommend him...
You can tell he enjoys teaching, but he is downright awful at it. He does not clarify anything. He only leaves you more confused and frustrated. His lectures are very monotone and long. His papers and RTA topics are hard. But worse than that, is his grading. It's harsh and unforgiving. I am failing the course, and definitely wouldn't recommend him.
He is a tough grader, and especially on papers. If you are not willing to do the work you will not pass the class. Also the amount of papers are not many but it will seem like that because of how long they have to be. Over all he was a good teacher, but I would not take his class again because of how tough he is.
Not bad at teaching at, but repetitive and like everybody else on here has said, he's a tough grader. You'll have two big essays, but you'll also have to do a few two page essays while doing those big essays, which can be pretty stressful. Rarely responds to emails. He obviously loves his job though and will help you when you need better in person
I took this class online for one semester, and he did not give a study guide for the final exam? When I emailed him asking what I should expect, he answered a day later (after I had taken it). When the only exam for the class is 200 points, I think it's fair that students have an idea of how to prepare and study for it.
2 7 page essays and a 2-3 page essay due every week. Lectures are long and boring. Longest 1hr and 15 minute class I've ever taken. He will rip your paper apart and have no problems giving you a low grade. He rarely answers emails so if you have a question find time between his incessant talking to ask.
He's extremely strict and grades unnecessarily harshly.
He gives two 7-8 page papers and these make up over 60% of your grade. So if you tank those, you can pretty much kiss your grade goodbye. However, he was a decent teacher and I understood the material.
I wound up getting a D in the class, which is new to me because English is my strongest subject. The assignments were unclear and he's a rough grader. I wouldn't recommend him.
Worst teacher, took his english 111 class got a D and struggled to get that, took it again in a 12 week version with Cory Maclaughlin and got an A. He just throws you into a 5-6 page paper and he's a super tough grader. Would never take him again.
I would never recommend taking any class with this professor. I ended up dropping this online class after seeing how he "interacts" with us and how rude he was when he didn't agree with something you said. He is very unfair when it comes to grading. I knew there would be issues when the guy posted his ridiculous pet peeves for us to learn.
He tells you that you have two BIG papers to turn in throughout the semester. In the middle of the two papers your have four small papers. He does not give good detail on what you did wrong in your paper. You have to go to his office hours for explanation.
He is a tough grader and always has something to say that you could have done there are no compliments without a but thrown in there. He is very strict on what he wants and pushes you regardless of how hard you try. He was very accessible to speak with during his office hours and did respond back to me in a reasonable time when I emailed him.
Beware of the essays and if you do decide to take this course DO NOT PROCRASTINATE.
Great instructor. He may be particular and a tough grader, but seeing as this class is meant to enable the student to become a strong, academic writer, then the difficulty is warranted. I personally like a challenge and I want to learn a skill from a college course. This class has been challenging and has made me a better writer.
Do not take this class. Most the work is fairly simple, but there are two 7-8 page papers that are extremely difficult and not needed that will wreck your grade if you do poorly. Do not take this class.
terrible class. English was my favorite subject until this class. i did not learn anything. there are two 7-8 page essays you have to write and they are nearly impossible to write in that amount of pages. tough grader. don't take this class if you are a procrastinator you will be very stressed
Terrible teacher, tough grader and does not give good feedback shouldnt be a teacher with the amount of low grades in his class. do not take there are so many other great professors
Wish I read the reviews on this site before I took the class. Him being a poor teacher and tough grader are very accurate. essays are worth a lot of your grade, and the length expectation is ridiculous, for the topic choice at least. The feedback he gave wasn't good. Very unresponsive to emails. 3 emails sent, no replys. pick a different professor
Hard grader but if you put in the effort he will recognize that. Pay attention to the lectures because they will help you write the two major essays due in the course. Doesn't use a powerpoint or any visuals so lectures can be boring. One presentation at the end of the course. Most discussions are between classmates.
Good teacher. Requires 2, rather long papers in the semester. Class is interesting.
I liked Mr. Castellarin. His lectures are funny and the assignments are interesting.
He doesnt explain assignments well and doesnt give much help on understanding topics . Need notes !
i honestly did not learn a single thing from this class.
He is a solid professor. The lectures can be a bit much for anyone who has a hard time focusing for a class period. This is because he enjoys talking. However, someone like me does well by gathering meaningful points in the lectures. He is very clear with expectations and as long as they are followed -- so will an A. I learned a tremendous amount.
No textbook required, but a lot of online reading assignments. Very tough grader. Don't miss too many classes, he has a lot of lectures. He will issue a 5-page essay and then change how he wants it written after your submit your rough draft. 3 essays were assigned for ENG 111 class. Horrible at responding to emails.
horrible
Okay so only take this class if you reaaaally have to. The dude is passionate about his work but you essentially have to read a whole book ever week, 2 6-7 page research essays due, 3 2-3 page short essays due, and lots and lots and lots of reading. Dudes voice is painfully boring and is an extremely tough grader.
Professor Castellarin is very clear about his grading and expectations. In this class, we had 2 big essays to write. I learned to be a better writer and I am thankful for it. It is a lot of work, but if you use your time wisely you'll be just fine. There is plenty of help and information for you. If you don't do well in this class it's on you.
He is very passionate about what he does. This can lead to him giving you tough scores, but he always provides meaningful feedback about how you can improve to meet his expectations. He cares, in that he wants you to experience English in the way that he does. Take his class with an open mind, there's a lot of reading, but it's all for a reason.
Excellent Professor! I became a better writer because of him, he makes you work for your grades but he provides in depth feedback and is always available for office hours so utilize them if you get in his class. He doesn't assign a lo of work but when he does they are worth a lot of points; assignments are spaced in by week so you have time do it.
terrible at teaching. his lectures dont make any sense or relate to any of the work. hes crazy about page count and will deduct a ton of points even on rough drafts. do not take this class.
Lectures never make sense or correlate to the assignments. Lots of lengthy essays. Not helpful with giving feedback.
At first I really had a hard time in this class but I learned very quickly you just need to pay attention closely. He does ramble a lot in his lectures, but he also makes his expectations/want he wants in your essays very clear if you actually pay attention. This class was a pain in the @ss but I can acknowledge it made me a much stronger writer.
if he doesnt like you, you will fail. He is a terrible "professor" who offered no guidance beyond "This paper wasnt good". I had to retake this class, used a different professor, submitted the same papers, and got an A+. this is a complete biased and awful professor who should never work in education again.
-He is clearly passionate about his career. -He rambles a lot in his lectures. -His grading is biased towards his own opinions -He is nice and does respond to emails/canvas messages within 2 days -His feedback is often confusing
Not my favorite professor, but also not the worst, if you genuinely try. Most people I saw struggle did so because they put the essays off for later, so beware of procrastination.
His teaching style can be difficult to understand at first, but if you pay attention, the class becomes easier. Some people say he talks a lot during lectures, but he clearly explains his expectations. He responds quickly on Canvas and gives helpful feedback on homework and drafts.
I loved this professor. He yapped a lot, but that made it easier for the people who did not understand. He explained things really well. I am pretty good at English and Composition so I used to watch movies during lecture and he never got mad. He saw my work was turned in and gave great feedback. He works with student's schedules.
He relies on peer review while giving little feedback. He switched from MLA to APA with little instruction.
He grades based off how much he likes you. If you try to leave class even 10 minutes early he will mark you absent. He has changed assignment dates without letting students know. Lecture heavy and they are not even helpful. He also would not tell us what would be on the final. Worse English class i've ever taken... and I enjoy writing.
Prof. John Castellarin is a very engaging instructor. I took ENG 111 with him and then ENG 112, too. Both were shorter courses but he brings so enthusiasm to his teaching which makes writing and research more manageable. Overall, Prof. Castellarin is very concerned that every student gets a good grade in his class.
