An awesome professor, definitely my favorite at UNF. Always available for help! Makes class fun with jokes. Very easy to talk to, treats his students with great respect. Makes literature actually kinda interesting. I would recommend him to everyone.
best man in the land, made class so fun, interesting professor . I heard he plays a killing bass also
Not the easiest teacher when it comes to reading material, but he always tried to relate the information to his students. Plenty of papers for this class. None of them were tough though. Tries to help students with their grades when needed, but only with extra quizes, not extra credit.
He was a good teacher. His readings were boring though. Chapman knew everything about all of the readings, sometimes a little too much. He gives lots of quizzes so read but his papers are easy.
there are a lot of books to read but they are easy and gives you plenty of time to read them. gives reading quizzes so keep up with readings. papers are very easy, didnt get lower than a 96 on any and wrote them the night before.
Dude, this guy is a fountain of information. Even if you want the water to stop it isn't gonna. Smart Guy. Read Grendel, Brave New World, Frankenstein, Othello, and The Odyssey. All easy with easy Essays about them.
took him for both my lit classes. great humor n knows ALOT! the books are interesting, great class discussions, and papers are no research, more from ur mind and of your own opinions. very good professor wish i had him for all my classes. only downfall is he takes role so u HAVE to be in class on time
CHAPMAN IS THE BOMB...WISH I FOUND HIM SOONER...GET ALL OF HIS CLASSES!
Yeah - he's easy . But you won't learn anything or be stimulated in any way, shape or form. I brought absolutely NOTHING from his class.
Very Enthusiastic Professor. I wasn't sure if Id like the books, but he made you passionate about them. Very helpful and makes you think. Go to class and follow his instructions and youll do well.
Very easy A. I had already read all of the books in highschool
Best teacher at UNF.
Because he was concurrently a student and a professor, he had no office hours and was very late about returning any assignments. He's a good teacher, just too busy!!
Mr. Chapman is a very good teacher. His themes and types selection is monsters in literature. Reading material includes Beowulf, Grendel, Richard III, and A Clockwork Orange. His class may appear difficult at first but he is very fair, and the class was a lot of fun in the end. I am not sure if he still uses the same theme, but FYI there it is.
GET HIS CLASS!!
The best Teacher ever. Take this class you will love it
if you watch alot of sci fi movies and you like monsters.. then take this class... other wise its pretty lame
Awesome teacher. He has a great personality - funny. I wouldn't say that his class is hard. Just make sure you read your novels and write your papers and you're good to go! he doesn't ask for too much out of you. Interesting class.
Great teacher! I learned a lot about things other than just writing. He's helpful when you need him and has a great personality!
Dr. Chapman is really nice and is really into what he teaches. You end up writing a lot in his class, but the assignments are not long at all. You do do at least 2 presentations for the semester and at least 10 short papers and 3 long ones, but for the most part his class was REALLY easy as long as you do the work and come to class.
He's a great professor and is really smart and wants the students to learn. He's super easy and you don't have to write a lot but make sure you pay really close attention to his discussions and the presentations. I love him!!
Good professor. He can be funny, but is very strict on attendance. You also need to make sure you have all of your materials with you every day in class. There are only three papers and one group presentation. Overall, a very easy class. Take him!
JOHN IS THE DEVIL.. HIS LESSONS ARE WORTHLESS. IF YOU DONT GET ALONG WITH....just... he is hard to look at. Whoever put chilli peppers next to his name must be terribly blind
Professor Chapman is a really good teacher. He explains things in an easy to understand way and relates them to everday things. 3 papers and a presentation, and he'll help you with the papers.
class was not challenging. He has commitment issues with his class & shows up late on occasion due to his jazz studies. Youll have to harrass him for your grade but even then, he wont get back to you. You dont have to read the books in order to pass. Cliff & Spark Notes will be fine. Attend Class and challenge him. if not, class will be boring.
I really liked this teacher. Not only was he a great professor but he also had a funny sense of humor. I enjoyed all of the assignments in his class, not that they were easy, but because they were interesting. i would def. take him again!
Good teacher. Overall easy, but you must go to class. Helps out a lot on the papers and does not grade too hard. Sparknotes are fine for the class. He seems hard at first, but it ends up being a relaxing class
He is a good teacher but there is alot of work to do! He can be agressive at times. And watch out because he tries to improve every semester which means if you're 07 and up.The class will be harder for you than it was for the semesters before you.remeber lots of work.
Good teacher. The first day you may seemed overwhelmed, but if you need help with any assignments, and you will, just ask! If you attend class and do the work, it's an easy A.
This guy knows little to nothing and goes off on tangents about movies and the history of the authors.. When groups present he continues to interrupt them and asks them questions that dont pertain to their presentation. There's A LOT of work and essays to do!!! DONT TAKE HIM
If you suck at English/Literature do not take Chapman. He is a good professor, very enthusiastic about his monsters and monstrousity. Do the reading, ask questions and don't hesitate to set up an appt if you are lost. He is willing to help even if he does get distracted at times during class discussions, but i blame certain students as the cause.
He interrupts often, so if you are willing to sit back and listen to his opinion of the authors, plot line, and related movies, you will be fine. Read sparknotes. The biggest draw back is mandatory attendance, and the excessive small essays in response to panels. But more importantly, who in God's name gave him a "hot" chili?
Hate the way he talks.
he was good, just had an annoying voice and had the looks of bob saget
The dude's awesome. Very passionate, very helpful, and a great person as a whole. If he sees that you are trying, come to class, participate, then you get an A. Go to his office prior to the presentations and papers. Jazz is not a theme for everyone, but when taking chapman he can relate everyone to it. Took him for both lit 2000 and lit 2932 and w
Great teacher1 Took him for ENC 1101 also and plan to take him for my last english. Class is easy but challenging at the same time because of all papers and presentations. Just be consistent and definitely go to his office. He'll tell you exactly what he's looking for and could be of tremendous help. Take prof.chapman for all your english classes!
Great Professor! Easy class. Made a A-. Would have had and A+ but completely messed up on one assignment. This shows he's an easy grader, but slow grader. When I found out he was teaching ENC 1102, I made sure I got in it. didn't even need to buy book because we used Freakonomics which UNF gave to all freshman :) !Take prof.chapman! You wont regret
Talks A LOT! He's only funny if your inh ito poletics. You have to do A LOT of writing assignments and A LOT of reading. You must writing at the least a 250 word paper each night. I would not recommend taking his class. Boring and too much work!
Presentations in this class were rediculous- he video tapes them and asks you questions.not for a non-public speaker.LOTS of reading. The creative writing was alot of fun though. He can come off as arrogant but he's actually very smart. He talks alot.never posts grades on blackboard.never returns emails concerning grades either.
Took his LIT class themed "Jazz". Was VERY interesting. I knew nothing about the subject and had no particular interest but after taking his class, I am still involved. He is very passionate and it shows through his teaching. He is very, very intelligent. DO attend class. Everyone will have to put their imput into class discussions.
Dr. Chapman is a great teacher. He is very intelligent and very helpful. If you show him that you care about your work and grade, that means the most to him. He grades progressively harder as the semester continues. He does give a decent amount of work but it is NOT over kill. I learned more in his class than I did all through high school. TAKE HIM
Good teacher, just spend time on your assignments. If you rush through your essays you will get a bad grade. He lets you rewrite almost every essay after he goes over what is right and wrong.
Kind of came off as fun or funny for his first appearance. But, after a few days of class he let his power reign. Always had homework, along with many projects and papers due one after another. Hate going to his class...
A lot of work! paper or presentation due weekly.
Be prepared to listen to this man ramble. It's difficult to st up a good time to meet with him for anything, and we have yet to receive a single grade in there, despite the multiple quizzes, homeworks, presentations, and the paper we've done so far. So if you have bad grades, you won't know until after the drop date, which is extremely frustrating.
If you're a good English student, this class will be almost too easy. Allowed 3 unexcused absences. Lots of homework, but it's not hard - basically graded on completion. Class itself can be boring (group/busy work). He loves talking and handing the analysis/his opinions right to you. Your papers can pretty much be written from in-class discussion.
I really like this guy from a person stand point, but as far as a teacher he was sub par to say the least. He makes many mistakes when he grades papers and is extremely hard to get ahold of outside of talking to him in class. Homework is time consuming but pretty easy. He explains material pretty well. Attendance is a huge part of success.
Really a great guy. has hw for almost every class but its really not that bad. only has 3 big papers through the whole semester and actually proof reads your paper for you! I cant stand english and lit classes but with him it made my life easier
At first I thought he was strict and all. He was pretty strict when it comes to class policy like absences and requirements. Anyways, I learned a lot from this guy. He basically knows how to explain literature in a new perspective. He knows how to handles the class very well as well as engaging the students in class discussions.
Chapman is by far my favorite professor at UNF! He has so much passion for what he teaches and truly loves his students! He may seem intimidating at but but once you get to know him you will love him. Not very many papers but a few long ones, but he is a fair grader. TAKE HIM!
Has a great personality but is very annal about grammar and structure. Gives lots of reading and annotation work but goes over all in class. very funny but also quite strange man.
Dr. Chapman is a great professor. He is very intimidating and, in his own words, draconian. He takes his class seriously but is very funny and easy to get along with. The homework he assigns is fairly easy, but the papers are frustrating. All in all, great class.
Chapman is probably one the best English teachers I've ever had. He's funny, passionate about what he teaches, and willing to help his students. He has a tendency to go off on tangents so don't mention the government unless you want an earful. He's intimidating but you definitely learn in his class. Take him.
AMAZINGGG! Great teacher! one of the best I've had...however he is strict when it comes to grading essays, aside from that as long as you go to class, and submit homeworks, there is no reason not to get atleast a B in this class...
hated writing and reading before his class, really changed my opinion on english itself.
Easy class if you just do what he asks of you. He has 3 papers that count as a big part of your grade however I got a F on the first one and still wound up with an A in the class because I just did the regular work. Knowledge filled and rambles on a lot but he's pretty good for Lit. I'd take him again
Dr. Chapman is by far one of my favorite professors at UNF. Just coming into school I didn't know what to expect from college professors, but boy did he show me. We have two long papers and 6 short essays to work on with annotations and homework assignments nightly. Be sure to stay on top of your work and follow directions and you can get through.
The only flaw about Chapman is his tendency of going off into a tangent/ramble. Other than that, he is a great professor and will clarify anything that may be confusing to you. Very intelligent man and you most definitely will learn something from him.
HAVE TO GO TO CLASS, gives homework EVERY class and doesnt use black board! I emailed him 3 times about a grade and never got back to me, over all a nice teacher and is VERY good at explaining the text but not very good at getting your grades back to you/ telling you what your grade is.
Professor Chapman was intimidating at first. Attendance is mandatory, he takes off points if your late, very strict. Loves literature & is very knowledgeable on the subject. There is homework EVERY class. He never makes the class read books, but a lot of short stories, poems, and one play. There are 3 essays, which he is sort of a harsh grader.
He is an OK teacher, not the worst I've ever had however not the best. When it comes to writing papers it's his way or the highway which is why I only made a C in his class, I like free expression with my writing not a bunch of rules which is what he straps onto it.
Really great professor. He made me start to enjoy reading. He explains everything very thoroughly and makes going to class not so bad.
Awesome professor, really nothing else to say. Loved going to his class three days a week and is really hands-off when it comes to grading & assignments in general. Take Dr. Chapman.
He is very explicatory but you must really put on your ears in this class. Take lots of notes! Outside reading is VITAL! Work your tail off but you still won't get an 'A'. Enjoy!
Talks in circles. Too few assignments. I worked my butt off and only made a C, another student missed like ten days and he gave her a C. Made not want to deal with this topic for anytime in the near future.
Extremely harsh grader, even if you go to his office hours! He's a good teacher and all, but it's difficult to get good grades. Plus, there are very few grade opportunities. Although, I took summer session.
Easy class if you read all assignments and pay attention in class. Go to his office hours. You will get a better grade on an assignment if you go.
Horrible teacher. Very few assignments. Papers graded harshly. Confusing. Uses some random book. Hard to get ahold of. Not the nicest personality. Don't know grades till end of the semester when its too late to drop.
I honestly don't know why people have complained about his class. He is very straightforward on what he expects so make sure you LOOK at his rubrics, guidelines, and notes. If you show up to class, pay attention to his lectures, read the assigned passages, and follow his requirements, you should be fine. He expects YOU as a student to do your part.
If you miss one class you will never be able to catch up. if you are on your phone at all he deducts half a letter grade
Shakespeare class. 1 midterm, 1 paper, 1 final. Never gives homework so your entire grade depends on those 3 things. He handed back our midterm papers more than a week after the withdraw date. Doesn't respond to emails. Doesn't test you on themes, you have to memorize quotes which is hard b/c he mentions so many quotes but there's only 20 questions
Dr. Chapman is one of the toughest graders when it comes to essays. If you take his class, you WILL know how to write an amazing paper. He is extremely knowledgeable on almost everything and is willing to work with you. He wants to see you succeed.
Take this class only if you want to wonder how you stand all semester. He doesn't put any grades in. His syllabus says you can email him your work and he will review it before you submit it; however, you have to email him multiple times to actually get him to provide feedback. He is not helpful at all and assignment instructions are way too vague.
He is a tough grader. You cannot use forms of "to be" in your essays. We had to write 3 short essays and 3 long essays. The group project that we did in the beginning of the semester saved my grade. We didn't have any exams until the final, which was very easy. This was my only B this semester, rest of my grades were A's.
He's definitely a tough grader and there are multiple papers. He randomly selects a partner for you, and you have to work with that person for the entire semester on multiple presentations. His directions are often confusing on what he expects. He is a slow grader and your grade isn't updated. Overall, I wouldn't take/recommend him.
He randomly assigns groups that you're stuck with the whole semester. And you present in the same order every time. He's also not always clear about what he expects from the group projects and veers away from the syllabus. He also interrupts your presentation as much as he can. If you get a good group and go towards the end your good. But if not...
Super easy grader and all of the assignments are relatively easy, however, his instructions for assignments are either terrible or nonexistent. And he seems to never answer your questions. I get hundreds on basically every assignment even if I don't try. If you want an easy A online class I would definitely take this class and professor.
Dr. Chap is great-ish. I might end up with an A or a B but expect to do work. Don't miss class or the peer editing classes. Also avoid using the words "to be" or "is" in your paper because he will take off points (A LOT). He can be funny sometimes too and the stories you read will be very interesting and easy to write about.
He is very clear from the beginning and will help if you ask for help. For his class he asked for three long essays, some chapter summaries and an easy presentation. He follows the syllabus and is very organized. Final exam piece of cake DONT MISS CLASS
I never rate my professors but I literally got on here to give Professor Chapman an F. I personally think he is very arrogant and he grades very strict. One mistake in a paper will knock you down to a C if you're lucky. I can't think of one thing I like about this professor and I will never take a class taught by him again.
Be prepared for daily reading. He gives pop quizzes that are worth a good chunk of your grade. Take this class if you understand Lord of the Rings or general nerd culture references, because he mentions them a lot. Because if you do not, it can get confusing. (This is coming from someone who has not read the series or seen the movies.)
Get ready to write. There is 3 1200 word papers as well multiple essays on the reading aprox 500 words. He is so funny but if you use passive voice, or weak verbs( is, are to be,) you will loose points. Be ready to read a lot. You read something before every class. There is pop Quizes on the reading. He is really nice. Very understanding!!
He is easy to reach outside of class. There is a lot of writing in this class. There are multiple essays that have a minimum of 500 words and there is a specific format you MUST use. There is also three papers that have a minimum requirement of 1000-1200 words. He is very picky on your word choice. Is, you, your, are: not allowed to use.
Honestly I wasn't a fan. The whole class was basically one big group project, and so coordinating meeting times for a whole semester was difficult and he was not very understanding of that. Lots of writing, and required outside-of-class meetings that don't always fit with your schedule.
While I really loved the material and what he was teaching, he failed to clarify just how much weight the quizzes had. In total the quizzes were worth half the grade, with exams making up the other half. I love the teacher, but he needed to put as much emphasis on the weight of the quizzes as he did on their actual grading weight.
I came here to give Chapman a negative review. The class consists of 200 points: 100 of them being POP quizzes and the other 100 being the midterm and final (50). The midterm and finals are 5 questions long. There are hardly any assignments in the class and this made things VERY difficult. I changed my major because of him. Avoid him at all costs.
Chapman is a great guy, but a not so great teacher. His quizzes are erratic and even if you do the readings they're still difficult. I will never take him again. Choose him at your own risk.
Great guy, mediocre teacher
Class structure very unique. He has a personality you either love or hate. Very cut and dry but great guy
Dr. Chapman is a nice guy, but I was not a fan of his class. He randomly assigns a group and that is your group for the whole semester. You focus on one topic that you and your group members pick and that is the only thing you work on all semester. Pretty boring. 3 papers but he requires you to meet with him before which is nice.
Dr. Chapman was a great teacher! It is easy to pass the class as long as you show up and actually do your work. It's not an easy A but he gives you all the opportunities he can to make an A. The group projects can be frustrating at times but in the end it all works out, go to class and your conferences prepared.
He scared me a lot the first day but I grew to love him. The group projects ar a lot of fun and help you get to know your classmates. He is a tough grader but meeting with him before submitting your final paper helps SO much. He basically tElls you how to get an A. You have to work for it but its worth it. Get ready to write!
Beware: don't take this professor if you're transgender or if you've experienced trauma. John Chapman actively refuses safe space training and is known to be transphobic by the lgbt community of UNF. If neither one of these applies to you, he's a mediocre professor who is pretty straightforward on his expectations. Not too hard to get an A.
I really enjoyed our group discussions in Professor Chapmans class. Please, find something to comment about in the discussion or you will lose points! It isnt a difficult course, but you will work for a good grade. He grades the papers heavily on grammar and proper tense. He is brilliant, and pretty cool. No textbooks, novels instead.
Professor Chapman is amazing. He was quite intimidating at first but grew on me. He is a funny guy and tells you exactly what he expects from his students.
Chapman can be a bit intimidating-he groups you up at the beginning of the semester and that's your group throughout the duration of the course so if you don't get a good group you're basically screwed. When you do your group presentations he is extremely picky with the content but grades leniently for the essays you'll write. Also, no textbook.
great professor!! I took him for ENC 1101 and i will be taking him again for ENC 1143. At the beginnng of the year he will assign you a group that you will stay with for the rest of the year but i got lucky and got a great group. Never had a test or quiz in the class except the final exam which he says exactly what it is the first day of class.
I swear I am the laziest reader/writer ever and this guy made reading/writing interesting and fun. He's super sociable and easy to talk to. He's a straight to the point and easy to get an A in the class type of professor. You don't have much hw at all. I would 110% recommend taking any of his classes, even though I only had him for ENC 1143.
His class is pretty simple. His lectures do get boring but attendance is mandatory so theres not much you can do. He is a very slow grader, he graded my main assignment after finals week so make sure what you turn in is perfect.
He was intimidating at first but he's a good professor. Just make sure you do the work on time and you actually participate in class. He likes to talk so be prepared for discussions based on the reading. If you meet him outside class he's super chill and gives really good advice for your papers. Do the work, and you'll get an A.
Easily one of, if not the best teacher I've had to date! If you actively participate and listen to what he says, then you should pass the class. He's by the book, but using the syllabus and taking his feedback into account makes for an easy A. Avoid skipping class because your grade gets knocked down a letter grade for every several absences.
He doesnt understand science from fiction, and absolutely refuses to respond to students.
I dont think he understands whats reality and what isnt. Hardly ever knows what hes doing, and his communication is putrid.
Contradicting, doesnt respond to students. Doesnt understand fact from fiction.
Ive had a lot of trouble communicating with Professor Chapman, and for someone who really has to pay attention, and ask questions it can be truly difficult. Communicating with him is pretty much like pulling teeth. It can be extremely unbearable at times.
professor chapman struggles communicating effectively with his students, and for anyone looking to take his class, look elsewhere. absolutely unprofessional, and unrealistic.
Professor Chapman really needs to work on communicating efficiently and effectively. Without doing so, it will hinder his students now, and the students going forward.
Do not take this class if you can, you will receive absolutely 0 help. Not to mention, Professor Chapman doesnt even like to communicate
Fails to communicate with his students.
Unprofessional , had to get the department involved to get final grades back. He actively deletes and monitors his rate my professor. Doesnt have a grasp on reality. Beware do not take this class if you expect him to work as hard as you do. Only teaches one style of writing. Contradicts himself. And dont get him started on politics.
Nice man, can be intimidating at first but the criteria is clear. Multiple papers with the word count increases each time, along with group projects. The group is randomly assigned and work with them the whole semester, must present.
Don't take Professor Chapman. Sure I learned some good grammar and writing tips, but it's not worth it. For one, this class has 3 group projects with randomly assigned groups, luckily I got a good group, but others did not. Oh, and he will yell at you if you misunderstand an assignment. Don't ever mention vaccines or politics in general.
Dr. Chapman clearly knows a lot about what he teaches and gives lots of good feedback on rough drafts of papers. Pretty cool guy overall with a relatively moderate difficulty class. DO NOT bring up the CIA in class oh god he will go on a long tangent I wish I was joking.
Dr. Chapman is an okay professor, but he grades very, very slowly. Be ready to read a lot of essays and lines of poetry. He's pretty strict about participation and attendance, so if you don't come to class you probably won't pass. Also, Dr. Chapman probably won't answer your emails, unless it's a specific question.
I was weary of Chapman after reading his reviews. Honestly though I think he gets a bad rep. He has a clear knowledge of what he teaches. If you just show up and actually listen and do the work his class is an easy A. He guides you through the essay and give clear instructions on what he wants. Just make not to ask him about Shakespeare.
Very strict on attendance. Will NOT work with you outside of class.
A couple of the assignments were a bit confusing but for the most part Professor Chapman is a really good teacher. He walks you through the layers of various poems and short stories, slipping in historical context as he goes, and the notes from those walkthroughs are the outline for later papers- his lectures are basically brainstorming sessions.
Easy class, but there was a lot of group work and we were stuck with the same group for the whole semester. Going to class is a big part of participation, and he treats the lecture like it's a high school class as in he gets mad if you are on your phone or any device and if you leave the room during class. Big yapper and late grader as well.
Dr. Chapman while good during the first week when going over grammar and style basics, Chapman hosts Students/Teacher Conferences where he goes over your essay before you submit them. During this time he will ONLY go over grammar, vocab, and style. Not focusing on any other parts of your essay.
Chapman is cool and his class is easy. The only thing is he's a bit harsh when it comes to grading presentations. He barely answers emails and you won't know your grade until the semester ends. This class is a essay/writing heavy. Don't mention anything political around this man!!! He will go on a tangent.
He is a very good professor and clearly teaches the information. He is very passionate about teaching and loves to talk about books. Can get off topic, tends to repeat himself, and is very opinionated. For the papers, he really only focused on grammar and not the content of the paper itself. Still, the class was very enjoyable.
absolutely amazing, dont forget the 4 practice worksheets he gives at the beginning. he goes over what youre supposed to read in class, the essays are 500 or 1000 words depending on the assignment, as long as you arent on your phone youre good. very cool and nice dude, he checks your essay drafts before having you submit them btw
