Has a little bit of a confusing way of grading, but all of test come straight from the homework and quizes. Good Teacher, cracks lots of jokes. Fun to be in class. Lots of home work though, but only requires 80% of it. Overall good class. Definatly Recommended
Great Class, very anecdotal with a generous grading policy and numerous opportunities for extra credit. He's been around since the college opened in the 70's and is still teaching physics today Dr. Cise is considered a specialist in General Physics I and carries my strongest recommendation for it.
I looooved this class! He is fair and reasonable. He takes a tough subject and really makes it fascinating! I totally recommend this class! Wonderful Class!
ah, i guess I would agree with everybody else.
He is a nice guy, has sense of humor but he doesnt teach physics well. If you KNOW physics take his class you'll get ez A, but if you want to learn physics don't take physics from him.
He definitly cares about his students. Nice guy. But his tests are pretty hard (they are going to be that way no matter who you take it with- hard subject). I would recommend him he really wants everyone to have either an A or B. Funny guy.
His tests are hard. He grades on improvement. I failed the first 2 tests, but aced the final and recieved an A. He doesn't teach well, but he is funny. Gives out lots of extra credit. Labs are EASY, he doesn't even really look at them. He's very hard to talk to.
He made it easy for me to wrap my head around the concepts.
He wants his students to succeed and he will help you as much as he can, but you have to do your part! Physics requires a lot of practice, so expect doing a lot of homework. His way of taking attendance is giving quizes, so come to class! Cise gives many opportunities to earn extra credit.
Cise is a bigot! He doesn't even really understand physics himself! Boosts grades by awarding extra credit. Refuses to use calculus even though its an engineering class.
This guy is not going to teach you anything. This is an easy A class. If you are willing to learn all the physics by yourself take him. If you arent good at physics DO NOT take him, you will end up dropping the class or failing it.
One of the best profs I have ever taken. He's funny, makes jokes while he's teaching, correlates real life scenarios into his teaching, always happy and positive, very respectable man, has three tests, if you get an A on the final you get an A in the class. I actually looked forward to going to his class.
Great class! Great teacher! Great person!
Horrible teacher, learned absolutely nothing. Very arrogant, should be put in a retirement home.
A majority of the lecture is him talking about random crap that could put you to sleep. He doesn't teach the material, he shows it to you. And if you don't get it, then he talks to you and the entire class like you're a bunch of idiots. He doesn't prepare you for tests but will provide you with a lot of extra credit that may or may not help.
I love Professor Cise!!! He is my favorite teacher at ACC. He makes you work hard but gives you lots of rewards and extra credit.
Dr Cise is excellent. He is very interested in pre-engineering students understanding Engineering Physics 1. He always shows current day applications of physics. He has a very interesting web site on current physics applications from the NYTimes. He uses these one page applications as introductions to new course content. I recommend him highly.
This professor is outstanding.I have friends who have transferred to The University of Texas(Austin)in Engineering and they say DR Cise is better than any professors they have had at UT. Dr Cise is very clear about the work that has to be done to accomplish the course grade. He is worth more than the low tuition I paid at Austin Community College.
Cise is an awesome Physics professor! I have learned so much in his class and have made great grades. I came into the class dreading it, but that all changed. I love physics now! You will not regret taking his class. He is also very nice and helpful.
This guy is hilarious, he spends the class talking about random crap and past stories. He prob. spends 10 mins actually teaching but its alright because he makes REALLY EASY tests and labs AND offers over 10 points of extra credit on tests. Id take him again just becuz its so easy and he makes the class go fast with his funniness
Dr. Cise shares a lot of information and stories at a very rapid pace. I recommend reading chapters thoroughly to see how formulas are derived as well as variables, you can also use chegg for hmwk help on odd # problems. He allows group consultation for labs/quizzes. Once you get your physics brain on it's a super fun class!
Excellent teacher, one of the best I have had the honor to listen to. He knows the material, and is extremely fair in his grading style. Highly recommended if you actually want to learn physics. While the class may seem difficult at first, things become easier if you stick with it.
He gives A LOT of hw and does NOT EXPLAINS his class is useless the test will be difficult and be ready to teach your self. I do NOT recommend him
Cise is awesome. Not the best lecturer, but doesn't really matter. He teaches for his tests from day one. Lets you use 8x11.5 cheat sheet for tests. Constant repetition of concepts. If you go to class everyday, I don't see how you could not get an A or B. Labs are interesting and easy. He is fair and allows opportunities for TONS of extra points.
GEN PHYS I- Easy course. His notes are similar to the homework. Grades on concepts rather than accuracy,ie- answer is incorrect but formula concept for problem type is correct, 9/10. Labs are cake and Jeff (the lab assistant) is able to help with them. Quizzes are done in groups based on where you sit. Good choice for non science majors.
You can lsiten to interesting stories or his life but you want to learn is not the place. His class is NOT WORTH IT. Lots of hw and his test are too long for the class period. More than half of the class needed more time for the final
Cise is the best and certainly easiest college professor on the subject of physics I've ever met. He is a little older, but be patient, do His Extra credit on his online site (instead) of the actual assigned homework -which he only requires you do 60% and you'll ace the course. Everything in his tests is derived exactly from the EC. Get your A!
DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!! He doesn't know where anything is, we basically have to teach ourselves and he pretty much get something wrong when he explains things to us. Everybody had a pretty hard time passing his class. If you want a B or better, then don't take his class at all.
Terrible professor. Does not explain concepts of physics, nor does he employ calculus. Insists problems be done in specific, inefficient ways that occlude the meaning behind relationships in physics. Overall, he is a waste of time and money.
Awful. Insists that concepts are the most important thing to learn in physics, then refuses to teach any concepts. He shows the class problems and examples from past homework and tests instead of making an effort to explain anything. Don't take his class!
Cise has been teaching at ACC for 40+ years, seems like he wants to retire, yet continues to "teach". That is, if you can call pointing at pre-solved problems with a laser pointer teaching. He gives you the formulas and you just plug in variables. If you want a class that is easy but has no substance then take Cise.
Dr Cise is the best physics professor I have ever had. He is the best physics faculty at ACC. He prepared me well to transfer to UT Austin.
I took him for a 6-week General College Physics I class in summer '14. The course itself is a rather tough class, but this guy makes it SO easy. If you can just do some algebra and work hard for brownie points, you can get an A in this class. GO TO CLASS DAILY, act interested, do extra credit. SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT OFFERED (earn a C but get an A)
He rambles on in class and does not teach effectively or efficiently.
His lectures have many personal tidbits that have nothing to do with physics-- impressive but boring. If you're confused you should ask him because he is pretty down to earth.
The exams are simple and easy
You don't need calculus for Dr. Cise, which is really nice!
WORST TEACHER EVER! Doesn't teach just sits in his chair and tells us about his life. More interested in things having to do with physics in the outside (i.e newspaper and Nasa) Will not answer questions, Will not be kind if you ask him to go over topic, better off teaching yourself than wasting your GPA on him
Entertaining teacher. Extremely knowledgeable about physics and science in general. The only catch is he doesn't explain the concepts in the textbook. Regardless it is an easy class gradewise
Easy A in the end. He talks about other things in class quite a bit, but it's worth it......
Some extra credit
Do: Go to LecturesLabs, they're Mandatory! Do: Extra Credit, loads of it, totally worth it! Do: Go to the learning lab & teach yourself! Do: Sit in front! DO NOT: Show up sick to class! DO NOT: Ask questions! DO NOT: Expect to be taught! DO NOT: Memorize formulas as they're given on test days! DO NOT: Buy the book!
Do what he likes, Follow his instructions and you will be rewarded. But you be careful bc he skimps over some stuff. Be sure to understand the textbook for yourself.
He gives a few examples on the board and that is what the homework is on and what you are tested on. However, there are many concepts and techniques in the book that are not covered in his class. He gives you lots of opportunities for extra credit and his tests are like the practice tests which are like the homework. If you do your homework ur good
In 6 week summer semesters, it's an easy A. Just sit in the front, act interested, do your homework, (go to the learning lab if needed), show up every day and play the game. Also he gives soooooooo much extra credit.
You can't not go to class. Do your homework and go to class daily. Extra credit will save your grade. Check out the learning lab for help. They're a little more useful than he is for homework help.
If you are a pre-health major not needing to actually know physics, this is a great summer class. There is a lot of homework and the tests are reasonable. The extra credit really helps on the exams. However, do not expect to learn much physics in here. Cise has a tendency to go off on life stories and just points a clicker at pre worked problems.
Dr. Cise is a fascinating professor. He assigns lots of homework, but sends you home with a packet of hints and diagrams, showing you how to solve each problem. Regardless, even if you do the bare minimum you will understand kinematics and energy by the time the course wraps. He's also extremely generous with extra credit and grading criteria.
By going through the motions you should get a C or higher.. But you may not have the understanding like you should. Don't ever fall asleep in class hehe
Dr. Cise is a nice man and he's a safe choice, but his lectures don't have much structure, which makes everything somewhat confusing.
Difficulty wise it's an easy pass , but it's tedious and boring. Attendance is important, so don't skip classes with him.
Deeply learning complex mathematically based concepts is nearly impossible to do during lectures. Cise blabs about preworked overhead projections without reading the questions out loud first, then vaguely explains with no degree of accuracy whatsoever. You pick up bits and pieces but never the full picture. My time was wasted every lecture.
Fair warning - if you are taking physics to transfer to a university I would avoid this professor. If your GPA is essential to you, do not sign up for him. If you are applying to get into a university program and need a high GPA, walk away and take someone else. Obscure lectures and difficult tests makes me regret signing up this semester.
I am speaking from the perspective of a software engineering student. If you need credit for Engineering Physics, John Cise is THE professor to take. TONS of Extra Credit and bonus for doing homework is awesome. Jokes during lectures are welcomed and introduce life lessons. He is much better than some UT professors. Cise is an excellent choice!!
I have calculated my grades and I am near the top of the class. With that said, I would NOT recommend. In lecture, preworked examples are inefficient at teaching the HW methodology. This means a huge majority of the class struggles. Extra credit is nice but is overshadowed by inadequate test preparations. Frustrating and would NOT take again.
Avoid. The released grade distribution after test 2 shows roughly half the class failing it. Bye Bye GPAs. I did very well on the last test because of paid private tutoring. If I have to pay an outside source, it indicates lack of effective teaching. Lectures are a waste of time ranting/boasting off-topic instead of test prep. Would not take again.
Nice guy and a hidden gem. Keeps lecture to the point and adds in humor. Physics is not my strongest subject, but I know he understands that this is a subject many students struggle with. I'm not the only one who appreciates his forgiving grading. His teaching methods and kindness will be missed when I move to UT Arlington. Cise Alumni SPR2016 :)
I am a mobile applications developer with 3 years experience and first moved to Austin when I got involved with a start up a few years back. This year, I finally chose to finish my software engineering degree to compliment my technical coding ability. DFW metroplex and UT Arlington is my next step. With that said CISE is the man for physics. 10/10
Highly recommended for physics credit. I'm currently working and taking classes. I needed to fill the last science credit for my degree and Cise's Engineering Physics was the perfect fit for my schedule. There's loads of extra credit which definitely helps bring my low test grades up. Overall, a great guy and wants to see his students pass.
Dr Cise is knowledgeable so he's alright. Now his lectures themselves are downright boring and repetitive. There is a ton of personal story telling. The slides are ok but you really have to teach yourself in this type of class.
Fair warning if you were in the military - I definitely would not take again. Make sure to present yourself extremely well and show your hardwork like this is the only class you have. Keep your head down and mouth shut. Smile and nod because you will be DRAGGED through a mile of mud to get credit for this class. Talks more stories than physics.
Would not recommend to family. By far the worst class I have ever had. You'll know what i mean halfway through the semester when a quarter of the class drops. Physics lesson finished? Now time for 45 minutes of personal stories. Ask about a HW problem? Get a shrug. Youtube/Google is a better teacher of material. Wow I paid money for this?
Too many anecdotes that obscure the concept at hand. Help is scant with regards to the homework problems. It is possible to pass, but .... take a different professor if you can. If you must take him and he knows who you are, chances are you will pass.
Good professor.
Often derails lecture with a boring migraine-inducing rant that has nothing to do with physics. If I heard the same speech from some stranger on the bus I would ask him to be quiet or switch seats. Unfortunately I'm stuck in a room with this guy in front for a few hours. Disappointed with the quality of teaching and leaves HUGE room for improvement
I thought I was taking engineering physics? How come a huge chunk of class is about history? Personal history and opinions to be specific. I feel like I'm watching FOX News sometimes. Gives a bare-bones Lecture that I could have learned more from Wikipedia. At times condescending, but then again he was never a decent professor to begin with.
Lectures were as clear as mud. Very high drop rate, but go ahead and take the class and find out why. Sit in the DMV for 4 hours to renew your drivers license and have some guys beside you rant. That's a good approximation of what the class is like. Oh, and he grades on some arbitrary scale... called out by students about The AQ/Test three times.
Inadequate test preparations. Shallow lectures. Bland presentation of material. Questionable grading and distribution of bonus points. Leaves a bad taste. Tells stories to put frosting, but nobody is really convinced. Not very inspiring and turned off many students from the wonders of physics. Think of Bill Nye the Science guy and now do a 180 turn
Dr. Cise puts a lot of effort in his class. But he does go off topic very often and make people like me lose interest. It's not difficult to get an A if you do the work without being told.
So so teacher. Pretty easy class. Don't ever expect to leave early though. Read the book if you don't want to listen to him.
He keeps calculus to a bare minimum. Many chapters he uses no calculus at all. Some people may not realize it, but this will put you at a disadvantage compared to UT when you transfer and study with the big boys.
He's kind and sweet and always available for questions. No complaints here.
He's a good guy and awesome professor. It's not hard to do well in his class and make a good grade. Show up, pay attention, do the work, turn it in early. So simple to get max points. Be consistent and get good grades. By far one of the more forgiving professors on grading. You want brutal? Go to UT and enjoy your 40% fail rate physics. Cise 10/10
Learn to appreciate. Don't complain.. he's one of the better physics professors in existence. I think you guys are just complaining because you haven't transferred to UT or A&M and actually met bad professors. Those guys won't flinch and don't care if half the class fails. Cise wants you to do well, and many students appreciate that. Thanks Cise!!
Excellent professor. Would absolutely recommend to family and friends who need Physics credit. Physics was never my "forte" class, but because of Cise I can actually move forward with my degree. I am forever thankful. Class wasn't bad at all. Just do the work and turn it in it should be no problem. Have a good attitude and life will reflect it back
The best way to describe this class is you're taking it with the Donald Trump of physics. Boy, he loves to talk and talk and talk.
I thought I was taking engineering physics? How come a huge chunk of class is about history? Personal history and opinions to be specific. I feel like I'm watching FOX News sometimes. Gives a bare-bones Lecture that I could have learned more from Wikipedia. At times condescending, but then again he was never a decent professor to begin with
Lots of people withdraw from the class because, quite frankly, it's a horribly run physics class.
You can EASILY pass this class with plug and chug.
If you took any kind of physics in high school this should be a very easy class. Minimum work required.
My ART professor graded more consistently and graded more objectively than this "Engineering" "Physics" class. Gives the most basic "I could have read wikipedia" summary... gives a useless HW packet. Everyone form a line, turn in the EXACT SAME work from GROUP, looks you in the eye, writes wildly different grade and pretends you didn't notice. 0/10
Would absolutely not recommend to family or friends. You will pay hard earned money to hear lots and lots and lots of talk that has nothing to do with physics. I learned about fancy vacations, money and POOR people, biking, OH I KNOW BLAH BLAH name dropping, and other BS that has nothing to do with Physics. Questionable and inconsistent grading.
Austin was hit by severe thunderstorms and knocked out power to Rio Grande campus. Rio Grande campus was announced to be closed for maintenance, and everyone was TOLD to go home. THE WHOLE CAMPUS LEFT EXCEPT JOHN CISE'S CLASS. He kept us in the oven hot room for a few hours. Warning - He's THAT type of professor.
Strange class to put it mildly. Steady heavy dose of personal historical anecdotes at every lecture and wherever and whenever the opportunity presents itself. The "help" packets he hands out look like they're 30 years old. He recycles them. Incidentally he never lets you forget that he was "The Founding Chairman" of the physics department at ACC.
Manipulates grades. Miss class once for a funeral and get 2000 points missing off total AQ. You can be consistently in class and the brown-noser student mysteriously has 8000 AQ points when max is 6000. Turn in the same early HW that everyone worked together in-class and wildly different points. The confused faces about grading was priceless. 0/10
poor usage of class time
Lectures watered down with personal stories and ancient history whatever. Easy class still.
Thumbs down. Would not take again.
Amazingly good professor. Everyone should be thankful to him.
If you're hankering for an engineering career at UT Austin, be sure to take John Cise...
His class is fantastic. It's great. He has the best words. There is nothing to not like. Believe me. You'll love it. Just love it.
For someone who has decades of teaching experience - he's an oddity. Worst experience of my academic career. Made a subject I eventually enjoyed and learned so dull. Highly opinionated & condescending. Willing to help if he hasn't already written you off. Lectures are worthless to homework. If you're going into any engineering not the best option.
Cise yacks like a storm but he spoonfeeds face it learning is your responsibility in everyclass
Work hard. Don't be lazy. Scholarship recipients should study in this class to get an A just like everyone else.
Boring guy Cise. He's got a lot of physics problems for you to solve. Sad!
Overall a good class. Lots of visualization and focuses on concepts. Drawings are extremely important and the homework packets, despite being convoluted, point you in the right direction. BUY the book for deeper explanations and read before lecture. Turn in HW early. DO NOT EVER ASK QUESTIONS! Be ready to spend hours in tutoring, and you'll be OK.
Dr. Cise is full of knowledge and bits of wisdom. If you don't understand something, all you have to do is ask. He makes it easy to get a good grade.
I've met some amazing professors at ACC and this is not one of them. If you are trying to transfer into UT and need a good GPA - turn around run away. Doesn't really teach the material to help you be successful - more interested in boasting his lifestory. High drop rate and I know why now. Don't let the grandfatherly looks fool you - condescending.
Extremely muddy, vague, lectures. Rambles on to clock in and out. You'll get the 'your fault for not knowing, im here to read slides, gtfo + sighh' vibe. My God, the preworked examples are useless in homework. Good luck if this is your first physics class in a college setting. I thought these professors only existed in movies.
Easy but boring. His system is screwy. Once you figure out what's going, its not too bad. Keep your head down and act interested.
I'll make sure to not take this professor again. Not recommended.
Sit in his class for a couple of weeks, and you'll figure out why so many people drop out. Frankly, I don't blame them at all. I should have signed up for a better professor this one is no bueno my friends.
Not very helpful. Not a good professor.
Minimum teaching physics. Maximum life stories. Let's out a sigh if you disrupt his story to ask about HW, gives you a bare minimum answer, the continues with his story. Taking this class was like pulling teeth.
More interested in drinking his coffee and telling his life story rather than teaching the material or helping students. I would not take this class again with this professor knowing that there are better ones.
I made straight A's in all my classes except this one. Got rejected from UT. I should have listened to my gut feeling and signed up for a better professor. Lesson for you- choose the right professor that will help you successful and not one who spends a lot of time blabbing about his life.
Makes simple equations complicated. Not good.
I've completed differential equations. Just know that this Engineering Physics I class is the worst class I have ever signed up for. Look elsewhere.
Bring a pillow to class or double up on your coffee intake.
Could have been a better class. Plenty of other professors to choose from.
Dr. Cise is a very popular teacher at Rio Grande who has doubtless taught thousands of students. His classes fill up very fast, and It's hard to get a seat.
Once in a while he tries to interject personal comments
Pretty inflexible when it comes to teaching. Shows and reads slides but does not teach. Believes it's a self-teach class - gets annoyed if you ask questions. willing to help if he hasn't written you off and deems you as "not intelligent" which sucks because apparently he's been teaching for a long time. My tutor agrees that he's a unique case.
Useless convoluted lectures. Reads off pre-solved problems with little context on what's going on. Drops you in the middle of an equation but doesn't show how to solve the problems. For AQs the whole class is stuck in a room trying to figure out 3 questions for 2 hours. Complicates what should be simple and straightforward. Horrible experience!
Highly opinionated and harps on about non-physics topics. The condescending rhetoric injected for little reason. My God, this was the single most EXHAUSTING class I have taken so far not because it was difficult but because of his ODD personality. Don't be surprised when so many students drop out. Had I known it was like this I would not take.
Overall not a good experience. Note to self - I'd rather wait a semester to take an awesome professor instead of signing up for a horrible one. My roommates got into another section and the difference in quality was astounding and made me immediately regret my decision to signing up for this one.
I can definitely say that it was a rough and unhelpful prof. Many students drop out. There are much better professors so keep looking. If I had to do it again knowing what I know now... hands down I would definitely choose someone else.
Needlessly interjects personal comments will make you ask yourselves "Excuse me? Did he just say that in public? Wow it's going to be a very long semester."
Not very helpful. Does not care to help you learn so you're on your own. I wouldn't take him if I had to do it again.
All-Star Awesome professor. Countless people have gone on to UT because they took Cise and applied themselves in his class. Amazing and terrific lectures. Very useful group projects in class to help students achieve success.
Quality has obviously gone downhill. Was not very unhelpful at all! Definitely Would not take again!!
Lectures are of little help for homework. Blabs about equations without proper introduction or context so you'll get bits and pieces but never the full picture. By the time it comes to homework, you'll realize he skipped some parts. Tutor taught me more about the subject x10 more than Cise's lectures. Loves to talk about himself instead of physics.
Fall semester over 50 percent dropped. Spring semester 30 percent dropped. Horrible professor despite all the "I am awesome all star" not a good experience and would not take again. Huge indicator are drop rates and you'll figure out something is going on.
prof cise has some old fashioned rules: attendence plus a lot of repetitive homework but overall it's an easy class at the end and he's a nice guy. you gotta ignore all the whining and belly aching from one person
Very light on calculus which is a major deficiency if you're thinking about taking Calculus Physics II after this course. Take it with a different professor who uses calculus and tests you accordingly.
Truly nice guy. EASY A CLASS.
Lots of homework. Overhyped and boring.
Incredibly TEDIOUS and boring. Little help with vague lectures. TONS of homework. Definitely NOT an easy A. Get ready to do an equivalent of 5 mile runs.
His lectures are entertaining and excellent. You'll learn so much in his class!
not crazy about his class but to be fair to the guy he doesn't just stand up there and tell stories the whole time he talks a little but he's a teacher for crying out loud seriously just read the book and do the homework like everyone else now how hard is that you don't have to be a genius to get an a from cise
horrible professor. Glad I am never taking this class ever again. GG to everyone that dropped because I don't blame you. don't take this class if you are going to do physics II. He skips over the waves chapter. If you are an engineering major going to an ABET accreditated institution know that he skips huge parts of calculus which puts you behind.
Super boring. He drones on and on but doesn't explain very well.
When he veers off into personal stories it gets annoying since his lectures are half baked and a little confusing.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. If you want to pay money and like to teach yourself then this is the class for you! SO MUCH HOMEWORK. About 12 problems per chapter but 3 to 4 parts per problem. Not all HW required but takes 4 hours per chapter. He doesn't grasp the idea that students have other responsibilities (work and multiple other classes).
As far as physics professors go, Cise is about as easy as they come. I couldn't care less which one honestly because I am not lazy and I always put school as my #1 priority over working some bullcrap job. I took 1401 and 1402 previously and one thing I learned from those classes was that you cannot get a good grade in physics without doing the home
Lectures are very long and boring. It's a mish mash lecture and leaves many students confused. Get ready to spend hours in tutoring/teaching yourself because he doesn't do a good job during his bare-minimum lectures.
His RAMBLINGS about his personal history is more organized and detailed than his muddy physics lectures. Quickly goes through pre-made clicker questions that are completely different from homework. Useless handouts. He would make a much better history teacher instead of physics. Never disrupt his MONOLOGUES with a question about physics homework.
If you're looking for insight, this is the guy. His exams are 100% doable except to (1) Pokemon gamers who are not paying attention to him in class, (2) self-entitled people who think they're some kind of genius and deserve an A just for showing up, and (3) people who still have a high school mentality who expect to be spoonfed at every step.
Don't gamble with a bad professor. Out of all the professors I have taken, this is hands down the most unhelpful. He literally does chapter intros and you will come out of class confused. Your learning is not his priority. His life story is more important than physics lecture. Honestly, my only advice for you is turn around find another section.
His in class AQ's are the worst. You'll get assigned 5 questions to complete, but a majority of the class never finish in the span of a few hours because he never explains properly. If you approach him and clarification, you'll get a SIGH and feel stupid for even approaching him. Like it's your fault for not knowing while he browses on his iPhone.
Seems nice at first until he yaps about his personal opinions on the world which can be crude and unprofessional. This is not a political science or history class. The physics classroom is definitely not the appropriate time or place especially when so many people had questions about physics homework/AQs. Many students leave class annoyed.
Self teach class. Lectures are ultra boring. Make homework a #1 priority above the extra credit on his ramshackle website.
Dr. Cise is an amazing teacher with a fantastic personal touch. He is very friendly and personable. This is a wonderful professor who taught physics for DECADES to many students in Austin.
John cise is highly recommended! He is very nice and caring like Lotso the bear from Toy Story 2. Amazing! Would take again! Thanks Cise
I thought I was signing up for an awesome class but it turned out to be disappointingly mediocre. While the material is very interesting, Halfway through the semester the homework doubled in length/effort and the lectures got more boring. Have you ever tried dribbling a flat basketball? Because that's how the class was like by the end of a semester
For someone who has been teaching DEACADES he sure knows how to make simple things very COMPLICATED. While his teaching methods and lesson plans need a few more decades of improvement, it seems like he has perfected the art of wasting lecture time by telling life stories.
He probably got his doctorate in story telling. Not very helpful with physics.
I'm the type of learner that's - show me an easy example once, walk me through and I can easily grind through the next and ask confirm if I approached the problem correctly. It's highly effective in 15 years of piano and violin lessons. Now cise's approach is odd. he is not helpful under the guise of handholding. Avoids questions to tell stories?!
wow the worst professor ever! He is the type of professor that work the problem but doesnt explain what he is doing. when he's done working the expample on the board he asks the class if they have any questions but nobody is able to ask anything because nobody knows what's going on!!! You have to live in the tutoring lab to decipher his class.
I made straight As in all my classes except Cise's. I lost my scholarship because of that. Funny thing is, he wasn't even my first choice. When I was signing up for classes I was like hmm should go with my first choice guaranteed good professor or take a chance with a cise. The biggest mistake I made was thinking all professors were good. Avoid!!!!
Cise was my physics professor in Austin. Every class day he hands out hints on doing homework and goes over every detail in the hints. Most students seem to earn As and Bs.
Handout hints were completely useless. Very hard to read the chickenscratch work that even the tutoring lab people couldn't even follow it. Gives you a giant stack of unintelligible hieroglyphics that confuse tutors. Subpar teaching, but oh look here's a giant stack of useless help, what? you want me to teach you? not my problem go to tutoring.
Worse than physics at UT. Note to self, choose another professor next time.
Lectures moves very fast and not helpful. Hard to understand and very boring. Lots of very tedious homework. Homework heavy and pretty much teaching yourself.
Not good at explaining when lecture was rushed. Tutoring center is 100000x better than him. Class time is pretty much useless so much that if you missed class and went straight to the tutoring center you'd be better off. I wouldn't take him again.
Mandatory attendance to absolutely worthless lectures. I took AP physics in high school and this guy is a horrible lecturer. If I never took AP physics and just went to Cise's class I would be absolutely lost from the way he teaches and approaches the chapters. Many people were lost and he didn't really answer questions. HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's such a hassle choosing the right professor. It's the most annoying part of College because you don't know if you're going for a good or bad professor. Cise's class was a horrible experience. Yeah, physics is one of those required classes and Cise made is pretty painful. Tons of homework and such a pain to sit in his lectures! Talks and talks
Super nice guy who often goes out of his way to help his students perform, He's always accessible during office hours to help clarify any physics or general science question or giving advice. Cise is a demanding professor but he means well. He gives tough love to make students study and succeed. He makes you work and earn your grade.
Most horrible professor I have ever signed up for. His class was a giant pain day in and day out. Wow the homework and the lack of help. I will never take another class with Cise.
I took calculus physics with this professor recently . I Must say that he was nothing like what I had heard... to the contrary in fact.
Professor Cise is actually more lenient and flexible than most in his policies. Passing is easy, getting an A is 100%doable with the points you rack up on top of your exams. Not a difficult class for an average person that pays attention and does the work.
Great history of cise professor. Horrible physics professor. Great geography of Europe professor. Horrible STEM teacher. Talks about unnecessary things probably 100x more than any other professor I have taken in my life.
Like most things in life, if it's too good to be true... then it probably is. There are any intangibles that you won't find out until you're inside class. Like professor personality, stress level given to class, etc. If you want to know what the class is like from someone who's taken it before... It was a giant pain. Gets annoying down the semester
Horrible summer class experience. Thank God it's not as long as fall semester. Talks and talks and talks.
Rushes through lecture as fast as he can so he can talk about his life adventures. This leaves the class pretty confused and it's annoying because he's not very helpful with questions. Talks way too much about non physics subjects that it gives me a headache. more enthusiastic about past vacations and awards instead of teaching the physics lecture.
If you hate physics, you'll hate it even more with this unhelpful professor. Get ready for a ton of homework and boring lectures. Lectures are not helpful because he goes fast and is pretty apathetic to whether you caught the material or not. Don't bother asking questions because he will get annoyed if you ask for clarification. Never again.
Near the end of April, the Air Conditioning at Rio Grande Campus was down. Keep in mind this was when the 90+ degree days were starting. Campus management EVACUATED the campus and all classrooms were empty, except John Cise. He didn't dismiss class like the rest of Rio Grande campus and we stayed a few hours in an oven room. WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!
Dr. Cise is a good teacher and a good motivator. It is not at all difficult to get at least a passing grade in his class. If you put in a little extra effort to get the points, he will give you an A. He is always there in his office if you need help or if you have a question about anything.
Cise is great. He teaches at the right level for 99% of the students. very few students dropped the class. Treat him with respect and he will He's fine. Teaches physics appropriately at the correct level. very few students dropped the class.
He has a very nice sense of humor. He tries to entertain the class while he is teaching physics. He is very friendly outside of class. Extremely knowledgeable. He uses articles in the news as examples of physics to show us the applications in daily life. His tests are fair and simple.
Very professional and courteous to students in class. Helpful and available to answer any questions. You get out what you put in and that is how he rolls.
Extremely boring lectures and so much time consuming hard homework.
Horrible. Get ready to drown hours on homework and sit in a mandatory attendance with droning boring lectures. Seriously would not take again. Many people dropped.
By far the worst physics professor I have had the mistake of signing up for. Lectures are pretty bad. Overall a horrible experience look elsewhere.
Wow where do I start.. horrible class. Very boring and unhelpful. Lots of homework. Mandatory attendance to useless lectures. If you skipped class and went to the tutoring center you will be much better off. That's how he rolls!
Horrible!!!!!!! Don't waste your time with his useless maze-like website. He barely gives any extra credit for the amount of work you do there. Don't make your homework perfect. Barely readable, Chicken scratch work turned in early gets more points. Lectures are mandatory attendance and are built to confuse. Never ask questions or he gets annoyed.
Big ego, poor performance. Lots of homework and dry lectures. Has opinions that have no place in a physics classroom. Wastes time telling stories instead of continuing with the lecture. Attendance is mandatory and will hold it against you when it comes to grading. categorizes students based on oddball metrics.
difficult personality makes being in the classroom a chore. Talks down on non-engineering majors which raises a few eyebrows. Quite a character.
The. Worst. Class. Ever.
Horrific professor. I'm gonna take this class again with a better professor next semester.
If you need credit for physics... don't walk, run the other way. I made the mistake of choosing Cise. He makes it as painful as possible. Unhelpful when Asked for clarification for TONS ofHW. Mandatory attendance that he holds against you. His lectures could be finished in a span of 15 minutes but he'll waste the 45 minutes for stories of his life.
His lectures are very Simple and interesting. He is Very nice and more than willing to help if you see him in his office.
Gives a lot of homework. Not very helpful. Would not take again.
He doesn't lecture about physics as much as he lectures (or talks, really) about other things. If you've taken physics in HS or have a general understanding of it, his class is easy. But if not, you're left with trying to teach yourself. Plus side is he offers TONS of extra credit and his quiz/hm/lab system is pretty beneficial to the student.
no this is not a fabulous class by a tremendous professor in order to make cise great again. BUT truth be told, if you have no other choice and you have to take his class, it's not the end of the world. just read the book TWICE and learn physics on your own. ask the tutors for help. so much drama over nothing
He's formal like which makes him sound kinda stuffy. Now outside of class he's real friendly and easy to talk to. Class is easy A if you follow the plan and throw in some extra credit stuff just to be on the safe side. Def easy C at least.
cise is not a bad teacher ... i received a good grade and didn't spend much time at all outside of class... just do what he says!!!!
Cise teaches appropriately at the correct level. Lectures are ok.
Dr. Cise is an awful prof. Do NOT take his class. His homework system is ridiculous and archaic- it involves an accordion folder that you have to drag around- and he doesn't care about you. He's tenured. Quotes his syllabus during lecture instead of teaching and kicks students out of class routinely. Seriously, stay away. He's useless and volatile.
Good choice for ACC transfer students who are thinking about engineering. Dr. Cise really puts a human face on the profession and emphasizes proper work and study habits without overburdening students with detailed materials that they could read on their own. He is eager to help anyone who asks. Also, it is quite possible to receive a decent grade.
Dr. Cise is a wonderful & brilliant man, loves his job and his students. Taking his class is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. He uses a simple and predictable grading system, which allows people to remediate and prevent a bad grade. The math is kept to a minimum, which is a positive plus.
I recently finished this class with Prof. Cise and received a good grade. His assignments were reasonable and so was his grading scheme. It was a nice class so long as you read a little bit to enhance your understanding. His EC activities were extremely helpful and generous. I certainly didn't see a lot of people dropping the class, not that I saw
Professor Cise is great if you're not sure about something. He takes time to answer all questions and be nice about it. His lectures are like so so and you have to keep track of the assignments, but that's a minor issue.
Dr. Cise is a good professor for physics. VERY SATISFIED with his exams and grade.
Professor Cise is really great. He is always full of useful & funny anecdotes to keep the class energized.
CISE IS AN AWESOME AND BRILLIANT MAN!!!!!
Dr. Cise is a brilliant man who has a real passion for physics. That said, he loves to talk and occasionally get off topic. The textbook is really not necessary. You can pretty much receive extra credit for almost anything if you can relate it to physics. Easy enough class to "sweep by", however I don't think I'll be prepared for Physics II.
Horrific. I would choose someone else if I could go back in time. Definitely not a pleasant classroom experience if you're trying to get physics credit. Choose wisely or you'll end up dropping anyway.
This is the truth: Cise is a terrible lecturer. He wastes time and rambles on and on about things that have nothing to do with the subject matter, and he avoids calculus techniques as much as he can. We're supposed to have a calculus-based physics class!!!! Avoid Cise if you can. You won't have the knowledge you're supposed to learn in this class.
I honestly cannot recommend Professor Cise to any serious ACC student who is contemplating an engineering major. The content he presents in this course is way watered down, glossed over, not rigorous enough. He simply does not teach engineering physics at a level comparable to a major university. This is something I recently found out from friends.
Boring and irrelevant lectures which do nothing for your homework or your tests. Terrible class.
Choosing the right professor isn't easy. I'm speaking from experience and letting you know that I would not recommend him to any of my friends. Choose another professor. The worst experience of my college career.
Professor Cise has awesome lectures! They entertain you while you learn.
His lectures are very entertaining and he encourages every one's participation. Very accessible outside the class.
Boring lectures some days but in general you can learn from him. Not a bad choice at all for physics.
Finished lecture in roughly 3/4ths the time allotted for class. The other 1/4th of class is dedicated to listening to a broken record of bad attitude non-physics talk. Not much help if you ask for clarification for an equation. You'll be redirected to go to tutoring lab because it's their job instead of answering it in class. Wow horrible.
If you need physics credit - don't walk, run the other direction. There are much better professors to choose from. And if you're forced to take his class, bless you because it's going to be a rough semester with Cise. You'll get the stink eye if you ask questions since he's not good at teaching concepts. Tells weird stories. Choose well my friends.
horrible lecturer. Having to spend time to sit in the classroom and let him talk is just not a good experience. He gets off topic so much in a bad way and glosses over the physics you are supposed to learn. Currently doing an engineering internship - I rate this class pretty bad. Perhaps you should look around for a better physics experience.
Avoid. For 30% of the lecture Dr. Cise breezes through slides with some answered problems from the book and does not explain the concepts. For the other 70% he talks about unrelated topics. He will drop you if you miss class. Hwk and tests are hard and he doesn't like questions. His grading system in erratic.
Terrible boring lectures with too many personal stories
It would be more accurate to change the class title from "Engineering Physics 1" to "The Travel Adventures and Biography of Cise" since most of class time is fluffed up by stories instead of the physics I paid tuition for.
Subpar. A disappointing classroom experience. Excessive about non-physics world adventures, but falls short in clarifying physics questions that matters for the tests and homework. Out of the blue personal stories distract from the learning process.
Very depressing. Spends way too much time telling negative stories about his life. I like to think that once in his life he was a good physics teacher, but those times are long gone. He gives you a folder to put all of your graded papers in, and that is your "record." Nothing is put into a computer. Weird.
