REMEMBER TO TURN OFF UR CELL PHONE IN CLASS OR HE WILL CUSS U OUT! ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY, HE DECLARES THAT AVERAGE ON HIS TESTS ARE 60%. HE'S CORNY, HE'LL MAKE U BUY THE TEXTBOOK BECAUSE HE GETS ROYALTIES OFF IT BUT U DONT NEED IT.
Hmm, if more than half the class are failing his tests you'd think he'd realize it has to be his error.
His tests are absurdly difficult, but that might be because he builds them up to be so horrid you suffer from test anxiety. Attendance is 15% of your grade. Can you say ouch? Tons of online tests. Do yourself a favor and pass on his classes.
Don’t blame Dr. Clapper if you don’t have a brain. The material is difficult because it’s a complicated subject not because he’s a bad instructor. He is a great guy with relevant real world examples that make his class interesting and in addition to tha
He uses blackboard and it is helpful in understanding his class.
I found his tests to be completely fair, I thought mandatory class attendance was appropriate since much of what we had to do was as a group, and I liked the fact that we got to grade our group members on participation. That was a clever twist.
He sucks
The person who said it was a difficult subject took 650, every one who is complaining took 360. Which isn't suppose to be THAT difficult.Perhaps she is the one without a brain. This guy is very unclear. He presents way to much material in too short a time.
The worst teacher on campus by far
considering that the subject was boring i believe he did the best he could. the lectures were a little bit long but we did work in groups and he always made himself available if you needed help. quiz after every reading. but would recommend
Difficult concept to communicate. Dr. Clapper used PP well to clarify.
he knows what he's talking about, and i really had to study for his tests.. it was hard material but he was fair. i worked very very hard for my grade, and he gave opportunities for extra credit which was a very good thing. he likes to tell the same story a few times.
DIDN'T LIKE GROUP WORK
cocky
Good teacher and hard class. Very clear on what you have to do. Attendence is counted and for good reason since alot of the material is more clearly understood during lecture. Not a class to combine with other hard classes in my opinion. Short article review was required and extra credit exchange is kinda like trading a dollar for a peso.
I'm not a big fan of him taking attendance, but the class itself wasn't bad. He provides everything you need to pass the class on Blackboard, which is enough to boost him up to a "hot" in my book.
Really Good Prof. I am not a cognitive person by ANY means, but he knows his stuff and teaches it well. People shouldnt just expect to fly by, but we are at a university after all ....this isnt high school.
This guy is one of the best instructors in the psych department. He applies solid principles of learning in his teaching methods and, although it takes work, they are very beneficial and make a good grade realistic. Don't be scared of this guy -- if you

I think CSUSB is lucky to have a such a high quality professor such as this one. He really knows his stuff and cares if the students learn. He will make you work so if you're a bit of a slacker then be prepared to get out of this class what you have put in. The hard work really pays off in his class because you really learn.

He understood his subject very well. However, sometimes he tried to dive a little too deep and often lost most of the class. It was hard to know exactly what he wanted, especially in the term paper, which we never got back once we turned it in, nor did we ever get a specific grade for it. He also used a text he usually disagreed with.
This is the hardest class I ever took. I am an A student this class droped my GPA!!!!!
Dr.Clapper stop rating your self on here! Everyone do not take this class it is ridiculosly hard!
Very Clear, Good Study Guide, Takes time to explain. Not easy, but very good.
Very good prof! You have to pay attention and take good notes but he gives a good study guide and he is very approachable.
I had him at HSU. he's the best professor I've ever had, (and I've been in gradschool for 7 years). the most clear, approachable, helpful, reasonable, inspired, brilliant, and creative in ability to explain through analogy. he's a little too naive about the scientific method as applied to psych. he should chair the APA or something
He gives you all the information on the notes so dont even worry about the text.
pretty easy. need to pay attention and take notes tho, but he posts the notes on blackboard too. good study guides. no need to buy book. knows his stuff. highly recommended
Dr. Clapper is awesome! He is so intelligent and is great at explaining difficult material. He goes at your pace and is good at not leaving anyone behind. He always makes himself available through email, cell phone, etc. I would very highly recommend him for any psych course at CSUSB!
He was a wonderful professor. The subject matter was difficult and I had to push myself to study in order to pass, but he provided all the tools needed and always was happy to explain. I really enjoyed his class and would love to take another class with him.
He is a brilliant professor. He makes the class very interesting and is actually kind of funny. Very friendly and helpful. He makes the material very easy to learn and understand, so there's no way anyone can fail this course. I highly recommend him for Psychology 105.
Everything is done in groups.
This teacher is very helpful and nice. His test are easy, final in cumulative. There are three test, 40 questions worth 100 points, and the final. everything is done in groups. oh and he sounds like john stossel. haha. I would definitely take this teacher again.
This was a difficult class. Dont buy the book. He covers everything in class and you will be very lost if you dont attend. He uses clickers as attendence takers. You have to work hard in this class but it pays off if you do. He is a brilliant and very nice proffesor. If you ever have a question he is wonderful at clarifying.
I had my doubts about this class at first. But he was pretty easy. You work in groups, although you don't get to pick who you work with. His exams are pretty easy. He covers most of everything in the class, so the book isn't really all important, unless you want to study. He has great ways for you to practice and analyze concepts.
The class was pretty easy. The book isn't really required, you can just use the notes that he provides on powerpoint that you can print out beforehand. He's a good teacher and makes the many concepts easy to understand through group activities. Also he makes the groups during the first couple of meetings so you have the same members every time.
He's a really good professor because he's clear and precise. He is really nice and is always willing to explain things. Do his study guides and you will get a very good grade. He makes the class interesting with in-class group activities. I loved his teaching style.
book isn't necessary. just follow along with the notes he provides on bb. groupwork everyday.just dont mess around and do your group work.
The class is fun but you have to be there for the group work. The group wrk helps ur grade a lot. There is three midterms and final. If you not so good a psyc just average a d on 3 midterms and do the extra credit. Just pass the fianl
He goes on and on about topics in a tangent.
No homework, mandatory attendance, hated the subject material...It was a struggle to get through this course! Unless you have ALOT of free time to study for his exams...then expect a C or lower. Thats what he "aims" for as the test score average! A student...now average :/
Print lecture handouts provided online & take notes on them during class. This A takes effort but it's possible if you study. Only 3 exams. The content is difficult, but he is a good teacher. If u dont understand the material, playing on ur laptop during lectures will NOT get u an A. Pay attention, ask questions and if all else fails get the book!
Very helpful and clear on material!
Dr. Clapper is super knowledgeable in his subjects. His lectures can be dry due to the material to be learned. Print slides & take lots of notes on them. His study guide is the key to this course. He tests right from them. If you fill/study the questions until you master them, you should do well. It takes a good bit of studying but it's doable.
Clear on what he wants. His lectures are boring but daily in-class assignments are given that have an impact on your grade.
Clapper is a great professor, he answers whatever questions you have and his study guides are basically what he puts on the test, as long as you study the study guides through and through, you should be fine. This A takes work. I don't recommend taking this course late in the day, I've fallen asleep a number of times. Currently have a B. Not 2 bad.
CUMULATIVE FINAL! Thats the worst part of this class. He gives 2 exams and a final ... so 3 total. Attendance is mandatory and lectures are very boring. The class is more like a biology class or an anatomy class than a psych class. He tries to be entertaining but overall he expects a little too much.
Boring prof and subject. 2 exams (25%), attendance (20%) & cumulative final (30%, tests you on exact same stuff as 1st 2 exams, so pay attn after you get the tests back). Basically rounds up every exam (84%=A, for ex.) bc he knows it's hard (but the curving isn't guaranteed). Record the lectures. I fell asleep in every class, still got an A.
He is a good teacher, knows his stuff. Pretty boring but if you pay attention in class its not that difficult. The notes are very detailed, he puts them on blackboard. its an easy grade.
Clapper is awesome! He goes the extra mile to explain thing and really pound ideas in his head. He has so many examples to help you relate the material to real life and understand things better. He has all the resources you would ever need to succeed in his class, it's just up to you to study them! Definitely would recommend him!
Speaks too quickly, lumps waaaay too much information into one exam. Biggest regret of my school career was registering with this guy. Will never take again.
Awesome professor! 3 exams, (multiple choice, true false and vocab fill in the blank.) Vocab is a HUGE deal on his tests. Study the notecards on his blackboard page. Also counts CLICKERS as 20% of grade, you must attend class. Also offers SONA extra credit that can improve your grade by 3%. Seriously recommend! Take him.
I hated this class. He's a nice man, but his teaching style was not effective at all. I'm an A student and I barely passes this class with a C. Book and attendance are mandatory in order to excel in this class. 3 exams, and a cumulative final. He does provide notes and study guides on BB, but they're not always helpful.
Found this to be one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. He often goes off in tangents, uses a lot of pictures, and never once really used the book since it did not go well with his lectures. Tests contained multiple choice, true/false, and fill in the blank which he did not provide a word bank for!! My advice find another professor
Simple class. Attendance mandatory. Memorize vocab and use it as an aid with the power point slides. Listen and take good notes on your slides so you can understand concepts better. Study guides are okay but i NEVER used them. Book not needed but helpful. All study material needed is given to you! Got an A in the class.
I can't say that this was an easy class. It was a lot of work. He goes through the study guide each day, basically. If you do the study guide every night, it is pretty easy when the exams roll around. Killer vocab list, though. Flash cards then do the vocab before you do the multiple choice on test. Great professor. Passionate. Knows his stuff!
I wouldn't say this class is hard, but it is time consuming. Start memorizing vocab words right away. Take study guide with you to class everyday, he goes over the questions throughout the powerpoint slides. You don't need the book IF you go to class.
Genius professor. His lectures are amazing! He provides everything you will need to succeed on the first day of class via blackboard. Very organized and very knowledgeable. You do need to work for your grade but just follow his lectures and study the vocab well in advance. Also uses tophat to grade attendance and provides 3% extra credit
Prof. Clapper is really smart and knows his stuff! His lectures can sometimes be very long. Nevertheless, you'll come out of the class and feel like you've learned something. 3 tests are multiple choice, T and F, and with vocab. Some advice is to not get behind on studying vocab because in fill in the answer! HE USES TOPHAT ($40) FOR ATTENDANCE!
Clapper is well versed in his material and presents it in such a way that students learn! The material is insightful and useful to college students in general. Clapper reiterates, gives examples, and has clear focus. I wish all teachers at CSUSB taught like him. Extra credit: 15pts. Cumulative final. Top Hat attendance: $23. Text not used at all.
I took Clapper's 360 and 364 class. He is an excellent professor. The concepts can be difficult to understand, but he provides many examples and don't be afraid to ask for help. He is willing to go over the material to make sure that the class understands key concepts. No writing necessary. Study vocab early. Do the study guide. Show up to classes.
It is a hard course. There is a lot of info to intake but Professor Clapper did his best to make sure majority of the class understood. Attendance is apart of your grade but in order to be successful you need to attend class everyday regardless.
Get ready to spend ten weeks learning about the the eye and vision. His tests involve huge study guides and memorizing tons of vocab words. He gives you the definition, but you have to recall the word. If you like biology, take this class, but if you hate it, I wouldn't recommend this course.
Professor Clapper's PSYC 105 class is pretty easy. There are group discussions that are part of your grade. Consists of 3 Exams and a Final. Lectures are interesting and you get to learn about the different types of argumentation.
He is an awesome professor! Posts everything to blackboard and provides study guides for all his exams. There's a lot of in class assignments(almost every day that there's class) so make sure you GO TO CLASS.
Unclear grading scale. 3 Exams: Multiple choice, fill in the blanks(vocab), and true/false. Tophat used for attendance, 3% extra credit. If you work part-time do not take as it is an extremely time consuming course.
Must study, Vocab words, Lecture slides, Microsoft outlines, and Lecture content. Do not take if you are working. Best to take during summer.
One of the best professors I've ever taken! Intelligent both within the field of psychology and out of it. Each lecture was structured, and everything he said was relevant to the course. There's a lot of vocab so get ahead on that! I never read the book, just took notes during lecture and got 100's on both midterms and a 99 on the final.
The textbook wasn't really required, the best thing to do is print out the power points and write his side comments, a lot of lectures, and group work he numbers off people, each exam is about 35-40 questions, Midterm is about 55, and Final is about 75(Cumulative), If you pay attention to what he says, you will pass, and there is Extra Credit!
Definitely not the easiest professor! A lot of vocab and 3 exams. 3% extra credit boost. Do not take multiple classes with him in the same quarter. Cumulative final! He gives about 250-300 vocab words to memorize and only tests on like 20 words (no wordbank). Study everyday because that vocab catches up to you fast! Didn't pass the first time.
This class is time consuming and difficult. His lectures are great though and he explains really well.. he oversimplifies everything so you understand. It is a difficult class but if you study the study guide he gives then you WILL pass. Make sure you get started on the vocab from day 1, it catches up to you fast! He curves the grades. Just study.
Ive taken Clapper twice and both classes were difficult, but boy does he know his stuff. He is clear on his expectations, you must take notes and I recommend flash cards for vocab. Received an A in both classes, but you need to work for it. Show up!
ONLY WAY TO PASS ANY CLASS WITH JOHN CLAPPER IS TO CREATE GROUPS OF 4 OR MORE AND BECOME BEST STUDY BUDDY FRIENDS. GIVES ABOUT 50 VOCABS A SECTION AND MOST OF THE ONES THAT ARE ON THE STUDT GUDIE IS NOT EVEN ON THE TEST. NEED TO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE WHOLE LESSON PLAN THAT WAS JUST WENT OVER TO PASS ANY OF HIS CLASSES
This class is very challenging, and is more of a science class than psychology. My advice is to start memorizing the vocabulary words day 1 of class. He gives you every tool you need to succeed on his exams including study guides that he answers all the questions to during lectures. This class requires a lot of time and effort, but is doable.
I enjoyed the topics covered on the visual system and Prof Clapper, but it was definitely lecture heavy. He sure knows his content. Brilliant professor, but super hard class. The average of the tests are low 60's. Take at your own risk.
Great professor! HE explains the material very well but you must memorize all the vocabulary. Tests are extremely hard average is a 60% but he curves at the end.
Clapper is a great prof. His class is based off of 3 test grades, the final being cumulative, and attendance. As long as you study for the vocabulary (I used Quizlet which really helped) and read the chapters, along as show up for the class - you will pass. One of the hardest classes I have ever taken, but I remember all of the material we learned.
This class is very lecture heavy so attending is mandatory. Overall professor is very knowledgeable and helpful. Answers all questions and makes sure you really understand. Tests consist of vocab that he gives you and some multiple choice/ T/F. Study guides are given ahead of time. I recommend recording lectures and printing the study guide before
Dr. Clapper is awesome! Lectures are heavy, but interesting. Vocabulary, lecture questions from Top Hat, and study guides are all on blackboard. That's all you need to pass. Study those three things, plus your notes, and there's no way you won't pass. Book isn't necessary.
Awesome professor. Really makes class enjoyable. Attendance is necessary. He uses Top Hat for attendance and random review questions.
The class had two exams, plus a final which is cumulative. They consist of multiple choice, T/F, and vocabulary. You need to buy Top Hat because attendance is taken there and questions he posts. You need to be focused in class because his whole class is based on lectures.
Love this professor. Just a really nice guy who knows the subject matter like the back of his hand. Second class Ive taken from him. He really wants his students to understand the material. If you attend class and memorize the vocab, you shouldnt have a problem doing well.
Perception is such a difficult class. I took it in the summer and it was information overload, he really expects you to understand each topic thoroughly, he gives sample questions on study guides but will throw curve balls on the exams. Memorize all vocab and show up to every class and you will pass. He curves the grades at the end.
he gives 120 vocab words for us to memorize for the first exam and 80 for the midterm and another 80 final. 20 are on the test. material is HEAVY and this is not an easy pass. You need to put your full into it to pass. study the slides! First exam is most difficult. Study hard for that one!!
There's so much information. He is super intelligent but it's hard to follow his boring lectures. Do not take this take while taking 311!
Dr. Clapper treats you like an adult. This is graduate-level detail for an undergrad course. Do not underestimate the workload. The tests are hard. Even his true/false is difficult. He does not regurgitate what's in the lectures but tests you for understanding. By far the toughest online course I've had.
One of the most respectable psychology professors yet. Clapper encourages his students to pass and offers many different extra credit options so that you will succeed. For the online course it was simple, you can do things on your own time at your own space. 10 modules + quiz with 20 questions, 2 EASY journal projects, 1 final exam. Easy peasy.
Heres the thing about Clapper. He is the quintessential brainiac, beautiful mind type of dude. It is actually an absolute treat to hear him speak for hours on end IFFFF you are serious about psychology. This guy is more of a graduate advisor than an undergrad professor, which in many way means you are in for excellent education but lotsa brain work
Don't need book, Answers for exams come straight from his lectures & vocab, his study guides don't help, uses lockdown browser but allows notes. 10 exams w/ 20 questions had 40 mins, final was 70 questions cumulative 120 min. Had to write 20 phenomenons that happened in our life, provides example, discussion posts. took this class over the summer
The good thing about Clapper is that he doesnt give homework and he offers plenty of extra credit, however the tests for this class are pretty hard. You must use a lockdown browser and the questions on each test do not come straight from his lectures, they are written based on the concepts you learn in each lecture which can be quite difficult.
Attendance is mandatory and TAKE GOOD LECTURE NOTES. His tests rely heavily on how he describes each important point in his powerpoints. He doesn't spell it all out on his slides, you actually have to understand what he's saying. Live by the vocab study guides, a portion of his exams are on vocab alone.
Professor Clapper is very passionate and his lectures were straightforward. This course is synchronous, where attendance is 30% of your grade. The exams aren't too hard, you just need to participate in class activities and review his lectures.
The only thing that was graded was like four exams so if you did bad on the exams it brings your whole grade down. I would'nt take this professor again.
He's a tough grader. You have a lot of vocab words you have to study for and only a fraction are on the test with no word bank for reference. The lectures are hard to understand unless you're really engaged. Unless you're part time, I wouldn't suggest him at all. There are only a few test but if you fail them, you're out of luck.
Very knowledgeable about subject and really wants students to earn material. PSY3364 is definitely more like a bio class than a psych class. Tests are difficult and grade is determinant on three exams. He does curve at the end but it is unclear how much. Lots of studying and energy needs to go into this class to do well.
Professor Clapper is very test heavy. Preferably always come to the lectures because that where mostly the material is going to come from for the test. He did hid the grades half way throughout the semester which I dislike because I did not know what I have, but overall test heavy professor and would never take again.
For his online summer Cognitive Psyc class, there is 2 simple journal entries, a discussion per module, & a quiz per module as well. Each module hass a total of 2 videos (about 1 hr long each). The videos are interesting. As long as you watch the videos, take down notes, & ask questions when you have it then you should be able to get an A!
I took this class in spring 2022, Professor Clapper was a very test heavier grader. Most of the exams were not even off the lectures and mostly in the textbook. One thing I disliked is that he graded the exams late and got to my nerve not knowing what I have as a grade. Would never take this professor again unless I have to.
Dr Clapper is a class in which effort matters. If you pay attention and asked questions. I skipped class fair amount which took my grade down to a B+, however if you if study you'll be fine! Yes, there are some hard concepts on the test but overall if you review the vocabulary words and notes you'll get a B on the test.
Great professor he gets right to teaching and stops until class ends, pay attention every minute. Attendance is very important the slides don't say much. The actual teaching is happening when he is talking. No textbook required. Can be difficult class is graded on only 3 exams and attendance. pass every exam you will pass. hes very knowledgeable!
If you struggle with retaining information by only listening to lectures this may not be the professor for you. I would suggest developing study and note-taking strategies. Take advantage of EC opportunities. only 3 exams, final exam is cumulative. Exams consist of MC, true/ false, and a vocab section with no word bank. correct spelling matters!
I took him online during the summer. There's an exam after every module. 10 modules 10 exams. He uses respondus lock down for his exams, which is annoying. Final exam is cumulative 75 questions. 2 journal projects but they're easy. Do the EXTRA credit. His discussion post are easy. There is a lot of work. I wouldn't take this class again.
Overall I had a great experience with this professor. Grades on 3 exams and 1 final that involves all units. Attendance isn't mandatory, but group activities are done in class that are worth a lot of points. Topics learned are interesting. Very passionate of what he is teaching with makes the class entertaining. Extra credit is provided which helps
Class is easy if you consistently attend and stay engaged. Everything in his syllabus aligns with what he covers in class and when he covers it, so as long as you keep up with the schedule, there are no surprises. He is passionate about what he teaches, which makes the class both entertaining and easy to learn in. He explains concepts clearly.
Overall he was a pretty good professor. He was chill and made jokes here and there and he taught in an engaging way.
