Horrible class, cannot teach. Grading scale is easy if online you had someone who could teach you the information. Whatever you do, do not take Clifford at all cost.
Professor Clifford taught a challenging class that furthered my knowledge of math. His tests were long, and he assigned a lot of homework, but he was always extremely helpful in explaining the topics of the course. His lectures were fast-paced and he sh
cant teach exams very diffuclt and hard to pass the class
cliffy was an awesome teacher for calc!!!
nice teacher, answers questions, gives one on one help, test questions worth a lot of points so if you mess up you're screwed, is sometimes lenient of quizzes if he sees the class as a whole did poorly, grades kinda weird sometimes, hard to pass.
This class has kind of a lot of homework for a 2-credit class. Math majors should like it, though. He is helpful and is willing to meet off-hours. Don't expect him to give you points back on anything, even if he admits he graded harshly.
Really likes what he is doing and he is excited about math. He is a great teacher. His tests are pretty easy and fair, no surprises but mostly just like the homework. For Winter 03 he made the final optional. He is awesome.
Knows his stuff and presents material clearly. His exams are tough but not impossible. His class was challenging but I learned a lot, this is what college is all about.
Not a good Prof at all. Made the class very difficult and is a VERY hard grader. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Really nice guy. Good sense of humor, but sometimes he has a hard time explaining concepts. He grades harshly and the tests are hard, but he offers extra credit.
Prof. Clifford is a nice guy, knows the material but has no clue how to explain it to students. His lectures can be very confusing. Very hard grader. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Prof.Clifford is a great teacher. He is always willing to help. His class is not easy but its not too difficult, you just have to take time to study and do the homework. So, if you want an easy A, I don't recommend you take this class, but if you really want to learn calculus this is the class to take.
he was very unclear with what he wanted on tests.
I've actually teken 4 classes with Dr. Clifford and would take more. His homework and tests are straight forward and he'll go out of his way to help. From time to time he stumbles on his own words in front of the class, but over all he's pretty clear about what he wants to say. Most recommended!
Great Guy! Willing to work with students who are interested. Always friendly at the end of the semester grade wise....but you still get what you earn.
Often does not know what he is talking about, but to his credit he has guts to admit it. huge delays in grading. Too picky in proofs and homework appearance. Good thing he has extra credit possibilities.
Prof. Clifford, is SO cool!! He is fun and intresting, and I really enjoy his classes! I totally recomend him to anyone!
He loves proofs but he can never do them, he always gets stuck and wastes half the class and asks students for help. He comes off semiretarded to me. I would not reccommend him. Those who like him are probably very good at teaching themselves, because Cliffy is not a good professor.
Dr. Clifford is a wonderful mentor if you show interest in mathematics. He will grade very fairly...if you get something wrong, that is your fault. I have extreme sympathy for UMD math faculty since most of the Math Education majors are looking for A's and not knowledge. Dr. Clifford is a very good professor and a very nice guy.
Don't listen to the cry babies around UM-D... they don't know what they're talking about.
Worst teacher I've ever had..period!!!I would not recommend him to anyone. He might know what he is doing(sometimes),but he is TERRIBLE at teaching. If you read this site for advice, listen to me.If I could do it over I would go out of my way not to have him as my professor. He totally discouraged me away from math, and everything related.DONT TAKE HIM!
Very enthusiastic about math, but should never stray from his notes, because he has trouble doing proofs from memory. Wonderful person, very helpful, VERY easy grader. Goes out of his way to find something right in your test and homework answers. After two classes with Clifford, I would take more. Great guy!
He should prepare for his classes more since he is a new professor, but he does not. If you are math major cuz you want to study math, not recommended, becuz he will NOT finish all the material he has to teach. Tests are drawn from homework problems, though long. If ur going to grad school, study the left-out material on ur own!!
very enthusiastic. loves math, but can't teach it. i might as well have taught myself from the book. there's absolutely no point in going to class for lectures. skips 4 or 5 steps a problem, and makes math seem harder than it really is. when you ask him to do a problem, he gets annoyed because it "wastes time" and doesn't even do the whole thing
Horrible!!! Worse explanations and his tests are stupid. He avoids explaning the important stuff , then on the test, it is all there! Sometimes he mentions some topics for barely 20 sec, then it turns out it will be 25 points question on the test!!! How stupid is that?? uhhh. In the Exam there'll be barely 5-6 questions from the entire Chapter.
He is very enthusiastic and really knows his subject. Exams are on the hard side, but you should be fine if you studied sufficiently. He is always there to help. He does mess up sometimes, but tries to be clear. Overall, I enjoyed the class and would take another one of his.
One of the worse proff at UMD. I don't understand his problem with OLDER students. He hates older students. His exam are horrible and terrible.
Whoever wrote something about older students that's exactly 100% RIGHT. CLIFFord hates OLDER students because he is new and donn't have enough experience. Whenever i used to ask him question he would piss off like EMY'S BIG RED DOG. AND suggest me to stay after class so he'd argue wth me, and he suggested me to take precal, when i was pulling B i
Do NOT take him! He is the most horible teacher I ever had!!!!
Although he seems to mess up a lot..i still believe he's a great teacher. He always corrects his errors. Tests are hard, but that just means you have to study a little bit more and you'll do fine. I would definately recommend him.
He is nice and excited, but a terrible teacher. I could not understand what he was trying to convey. He would go off on random topics and not teach what we needed to know for the tests.
By far one of the worst professors on campus. Very confusing and often makes mistakes. There are much better calc teacher then him.
he is horrible........always not clear on what he wants on the exam......
Professor Clifford is a great teacher. He really cares about his students and will do anything to help them succeed. He is very approachable and an all-around nice guy. The class was pretty easy, assignments were challenging but not too difficult. Tests were reasonable. I would definitely take his class again.
He is not clear in class at all, but he is a big help when you go to him and ask him. You have to study by yourslef to get the materials.
He's NOT a clear teacher, and he doesn't know how to teach well. He's a stubborn person, and feels like it's a waste of time doing homework problems on the board. I needed help in class because I was doing poorly due to his teaching method, and he told me that to succeed in life, I must fail first. And guess what? He failed me. Some help, eh?
Took him for Fourier and Boundary class typically taught by Dr. Brown. Clifford taught this class for the first time and did a great job and covered a lot of material. I worked hard and came out with a good understanding of a cool topic. If you're looking for an easy A, go take an art class...
Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems. Surprised that I could actually apply some topics to another class. Fair teacher, but he seems very timid and shy. He gets embarassed easily, earning him the nick-name "Clifford, the Big Red Dog". He dresses immaculately.
Good professor. His lectures are kinda all over the place and he is sometimes hard to follow. If you need extra help though, he's always willing to help.
i took calc 2 with him and i thought he was a great professor.. awesome teacher and very helpful. cannot go everything in class, but that is what office hours are for! do your homework to stay on track and ask as many questions to get an A.. take it with him if you want to understand rather than memorize.
This professor is helpless useless, could be a good high school teacher, but not a good professor. Read straight from the text book. Lack of knowledge.
This man would make a great High School teacher, not a college professor. His lectures are all over the place, and he regularly loses himself on obscene tangents. Assigns homework daily, and while that's not a bad thing, the vast majority of it is irrelevant. His goals for the class never appear clear, and he had difficulty linking topics.
One of the coolest math classes yet! This material is tough but with Clifford's explains and the text book things make sense. Read each chapter 4 or 5 times and do all suggested homework problems, those are the possible test questions. Form study groups and work through all the problems you can.
You dont have much of a choice for math 412, you have to take him. He sucks, he doesn't understand the material, doesn't come prepared for class. Gets nervous and turns red. The Average on the first test was 56. Read the book like you have no one teaching the class. But he is a nice guy as a human, a nice human being. BAD teacher. He is cool.
Awesome class to anyone who loves math. It teaches how to think like a mathematician. Some proofs and examples need to rewritten and reread a few times to bring the points home. Read each section a few times and go over EVERY assigned problem as a group. Form a bi-weekly study group and help each other out. As an FYI, Clifford is awesome!
Steer clear of Clifford's calc II class. His tests are very difficult and contain a lot of curve balls. Up until I took this class I had an A in nearly every math class I had taken. I got a C in this class and it killed my GPA.
Prof. Clifford still needs to figure out his teaching style. He jumps around a lot and his lectures aren't streamlined at all. Tests are OK, but I feel the problems lose their focus on the test overall and can be tricky. Decently helpful but not a ton. I think he's too shy to teach this. He has learning to do from older profs.
He is not easy, but if you are an independent learner, DO THE HOMEWORK, and study (a lot) you will do well. Don't take him if you have five classes. You won't have enough time to dedicate to the work. Also go to his office! He loves people that ask questions. The key is to not get lazy.
Loves math!
I took this class in summer, so class was literally 2 straight hours of no break lectures. You will want to read the sections before class and review after while doing homework. He is very good at explaining material, though uses a lot of examples that are already in the book. Also, it wouldn't hurt to know how to write proofs beforehand.
You must dedicate a lot of time to his class. He was not willing to meet with me outside of class and I didn't feel that he cared about individuals. He loves math, but I wouldn't recommend him for calc 2. This was the first class I have ever withdrew from.
hes a really nice guy but didnt like him as a teacher. unless u dedicate your life to studying math, i dont recommend. his tests questions are nothing like the homework problems
He's a nice guy, but seriously should not teach. The calc 2 class is pretty hard unless you spend 40 hours a week doing homework. The material is hard enough as it is, and he is not clear when teaching. He talks at the board and never finishes examples.
I took this class in the summer, and quite frankly I believe he is a great teacher in terms helpfulness and enthusiasm. This class is manageable, you have to do the homework; that's the key to getting As on his test, they are very straight forward, not too hard.In terms of clarity, youtube can help in some sense, but go to his office hours!
He's a lot easier than he's painted out to be here, as long as you do the homework problems you'll do fine on the quizzes/tests. He's a reasonable guy and he definitely makes himself available to help.
Clifford is a very nice professor. He is the first professor I've had in college that actually cares about students, and their performance. He can be a bit jumbled in his speech at times but its not like trying to understand a strong foriegn accent. If you stay on top of the material you will be fine. if not, its easy to perform poorly.
Amazing Professor extremely helpful and willing to make the effort to help
Quizes are super easy. Tests are ridiculous compared to quizzes and examples in class. This guy is boring, and makes calculus sound easy until he tests you on it. With that being said he curves the final grades by a ton. Must do homework to do well with him.
Horrible professor, expect a quiz every week. The tests are crazy hard, and rarely gives partial credit and does not grade fairy whats so ever. He does not give extra credit or study guides. I would not recommend him unless your willing to put TONS of hours of studying because he is very tricky on tests.
Not a great professor but not bad either. His lectures are clear, Tests & quizzes were straight to the point--not easy, obviously, it's Calc 2, but if you do the homework assigned (not graded) and study for the exams you'll do fine. Drops a few of the quizzes. Keep in mind in Calc 2, work is required to pass The work you put in is the grade you get
He goes on long boring tangents about his life and takes up most of the time. He's not organized at all. Sometimes he will go over time and won't let you leave. We were always falling behind, like at the end of the semester we're 2 weeks behind schedule. I self-learned with the book, it's pointless going to his class.
He is a very good Professor, he is always willing to help and makes sure you know what you are doing. If you do homework he assigns and examples he does in class you will be more than fine. His quizzes and tests are straight forward, not tricky. I love Prof Clifford such a nice professor.
His lectures are kind of confusing and he sometimes has a hard time explaining the material himself. Homework is optional for the most part. Doing it definitely helps with the tests.
a lot of ungraded homework, do it if you want a good grade, attend class, overall a good professor teaching tough material
Let me be completely honest, at day one I thought I made a huge mistake. He constantly stuttered, and was ill prepared. He also expected you to remember Calc 1. A couple of people dropped, but then he got more comfortable and gave extra credit like crazy. I met a lot of friends and the lectures were funny, and I got more intrigued with the material
Professor Clifford is the best math teacher I ever took in my entire life. He does any problem step by step and explains exactly what he is doing. If you have to take calc 2 take him. I got a 100% on the first exam and I look forward to going to his class every day.
Lectures optional; I'm certain he improvises them. Explanations confusing and long enough that HW questions take up most of class. Goes on long irrelevant tangents, leaves class for phone calls, then holds class past time limit. Quizzes strangely easy, tests have topics not covered in class. Feedback on tests rare at best. Extra credit essential.
Not a great professor to take if calculus isn't your strong suit. Lectures are very disorganized and he tends to go on tangents about irrelevant topics. Exams were tough and he didn't really provide much feedback. You'll have to spend a lot of time learning on your own to succeed.
He's very very clear on what he expects from you. A lot of the time the stuff he discusses on Monday comes on the Thursday quiz. He gives a lot of homework none of which is graded but it essential to do if you want an A. I would def. take him again.
Motivates students to study by giving them weekly quizzes. No online homework. Assigns book work that he RECOMMENDS you do, but doesn't collect. Honestly, if you take really GOOD notes and pay attention to lecture, doing all the homework isn't necessary. Overall a great professor, and tests students fairly. Rate 9/10, would take again.
Weekly quizzes, drops lowest 2. No WebWork. 3 tests and a final. Assigns homework problems from the book, but it is not required that you do them only suggested. Class is not easy, but with effort you can pass. Clifford does his best to help you and does a good job explaining difficult concepts. I would take him again.
He's about as average of a professor as average gets. I took him for Calc 2 the second time I've taken the class, and if I didn't have the knowledge from the first time, I would have been lost. Not a great professor. Not terrible, but not great at all.
Best math professor I've had. If you don't understand something in class he will go out of his way to help you during office hours or other times if you can't make it. He is very clear about what you need to know for exams, and if you take notes during lectures you will be fine.
Mr Clifford is a nice and fair teacher at UMD. He is very smart at math, however if dont take notes well you will not do good. Take notes, and read the book will help you and Mr Clifford is fair on tests and quizzes. Would take again and very nice guy.
Clifford is a great professor, exams are challenging but fair. Expect quizzes every other week and homework is not graded but essential for a good grade. lectures consist of examples, theorems, definitions, and proofs. with everything written on the board. making note taking very easy to follow.
Calc is hard, but if I hadn't taken it in HS, I prob would have failed with him as my teacher. Personally, I thought a lot of his lectures were confusing & he would just leave half-finished examples up that were no help. Spent a lot of lectures going over unnecessary info. Never felt like I knew what to expect on his tests. Ask questions if needed!
Prof Clifford is an extremely fair professor. If you want to get an A in the class then take notes on all his examples because most of the time the same ones show on the exam, do all the homework problems for each section in a timely manner, and always do his optional homework because they help your grade. Overall great professor!
Good math teachers are really hard to come by but Clifford is most definitely one. He is forgiving on tests and quizzes and cares more about a student's understanding of the material than if they made one error that throws their final answer off. He didn't require any homework to be turned it which already canonizes him in my book.
Grade consists of several quizzes, 3 exams and a final. Quizzes, exams and final are difficult, but not unfair. Hes a lenient grader. Allowed 3x5 notecard for us on Exam 2, 3 and final. No WebWork. Professor Leonard and Organic Chemistry Tutor on YouTube are great learning resources for this course. Go to them in times of confusion.
Clifford is one of the best math teachers I've had in my life. He explains concepts in a way that shows the beauty and simplicity of mathematics, and he restored my love for math.
Not great at teaching. Expects you to learn everything just by reading the text book. Quiz almost every week, but never gives out answers to check work. Hard to manage if taking other hard classes (most engineering students). Exams are hard and NOTHING like quizzes or homework. Homework is optional. Make sure you know your Calculus 2 before taking.
I would show up to Friday lectures just to take the quizzes. He's cool and all but he's kind of like, nervous during lecture. He forgot to include certain aspects in the syllabus which is a no no. These aspects were to our benefit however so it's a pass. Drops one quiz and has some curve. Not amazing, but good to get an A.
The final exam is way more harder than the 3 exams. There is no HW assigned but there are book problems to prepare for exams since no reviews are given. Professor Clifford goes fast on some topics but he expects us to know everything discussed in class. Only have to choose 1 or 2 problems on the quiz.
Great professor! There are quizzes just about every Friday, but you get to pick one or two problems to do, so they're designed to be easy. Homework is assigned but is optional. I recommend doing it because tests and quizzes are similar. I never felt there were any hard or surprising questions. He's extremely caring and only wants you to succeed!
nice guy
Professor Clifford is a very nice guy, but a horrible teacher. His lectures dragged on, were so hard to follow, and overall disorganized. I would not recommend taking Clifford unless you want to teach yourself the entirety of calculus 3. Save the hassle and take another professor. Exams have few questions but have over 5+ parts to each question.
Clifford's lectures are a bit confusing, I probably retaught myself 25-50% of material when doing webwork, which I thought he was a bit too heavy on. He offered "optional homework", not to be confused with extra credit, usually involving a proof of some kind. I thought he was very lenient when it came to partial credit and very willing to discuss.
I would say that Professor Clifford isn't for everyone. He initially seems nervous or awkward when lecturing, but he definitely knows what he's talking about. He's always open to talk about any topics he's covered in class or even anything math related not within class. He cares about your performance in class and is usually open for office hours.
Grade based on 3 exams and 10 quizzes. If you can do the quizzes you can do the exams. Homework problems are assigned for practice and are good for studying but don't affect grade.
Awesome professors. Lots of opportunity for questions and extra credit for asking the questions. Very willing to help with homework problems, as long as you do them. A bit webwork heavy, but it helps prepare you for tests. Did curve an exam in an intuitive way when many people did poorly. Quizzes are 4-7 problems and you get graded on one.
Very good professor overall. He has very reasonable standards for undergraduates in upper-level math courses. He does sometimes struggle with responding to emails but his office hours are VERY helpful and is willing to meet outside office hours from time to time.
Good teacher sometimes explains things in a confusing manner. Spends a heavy amount of time doing and running through requested problems. Mini quizzes are easy if you do the webwork. If you had good Calc 2 education this will be a pretty achievable A with minimal homework.
Lectures tend to be very long and comprehensive (and he tends to take a long time on certain subjects), however he makes sure students understand the material; quizzes were not too bad (choose 1 problem out of 6-8), exams were a bit tricky so make sure to study!! Very accessible in office hours and very helpful, wants to see everyone succeed
useless lecture copies the textbook onto the board. additionally, textbook exercises have no answers, and he refuses to give them, says they are online despite him never looking. refuses to answer emails, says he gets hundreds, so he says go to office hours. office hours are around 12-1pm, where most people have class. quizzes are ok, exams arent
hes a sweetheart but is very nervous to reply. I loved him but you have to do a lot of independent learning. He is a great guy. if you cant learn on your own dont take him.
Taken for a summer class. Despite it being accelerated I understood his teaching better than my previous professor. He ensures everyone understands material. Quizzes were every week, but you only picked one question to do. Lot of studying needed to stay at the pace of a summer class. In a normal class he would seem to be great.
Professor Clifford has a specific teaching style that may not be for everyone. His lectures can be confusing, but he's helpful during office hours. Unstuck AI and doing the assigned webwork are key to succeeding in this class.
Lecture is just him copying from the textbook, doesn't know how to answer a question properly. The textbook practice questions don't have answers and he wont give them to you. He attempts to be nice but he's bad at that too. Weekly quizzes that are easy but the exams are the complete opposite.
