This class is hard as crap. He lectures and your notes better be accurate bc you have to tell them all back on the tests. The tests are hard and very analytical of the notes you take. Good luck!
I absolutely love Dr. Cogg. Sure, he's hard, but he's a great guy who knows what he's talking about.
Dr. Cogg is an awesome professor. his tests are hard, but if you study and actually read you'll do fine.
One of the hardest profs I've ever had, but so much fun! Really liked him.
Coggeshall is an awesome professor. Sure, the class is hard, but if you listen, take notes, study the notes and actually read the assigned articles, you'll do fine. If you're not interested in the topic, avoid the class ... although he can probably get you to love anthropology! Great and helfpul.
Very challenging but fun class. Dr. C. challenged some of my assumptions about the world, which in turn inspired me compare his assertions to various books, journals, etc. Also, his almost daily emphasis on depencency theory tested my patience a few times. Other than that, he's an excellent prof

Doc Coggeshall is an excellent professor. His class is challenging, but well worth your time and effort. He knows his stuff and will make sure you will too!
if you aren't an anthropology mayor STAY CLEAR. he's a fun teacher, but the tests and busy work is ridiculous. just don't do it.
He's pretty hard. Its a lot of lecture and a lot of notes. The class essays are a pain. The information is useful, especially if you are a sociology or history major

Toughest class I've had. In a good way, though. While the work is extreme, I learned more in this class than any other.
As long as you listened in class and took notes -- not just scrawled out everything he said -- and then look over them a few times like the two times leading up to the test...you should be fine for the tests. His tests are directly from the notes and what you missed in the notes you can easily find in the book, if you purchased it. Fascinating class and not difficult.
Best class I've ever taken. Dr. Cog's classes will challenge everything you believe about culture in the best way possible. While he is difficult, the work is absolutely worth what you'll learn from such a smart man. Everyone in Clemson needs to take an Anthro class from this guy!
As long as you attend class and take notes (somewhat detailed - just write down what he says) this class is not too difficult. It is fascinating, however, and Dr. Cog's an amazing teacher and teaches a fascinating class.
This class is extremely difficult. Pure lecture everyday.Endless note taking. Must speak up in class to get the attendance points. The projects are awful and so are the tests. I would avoid this class unless I just had to take it.
He sucks he is the most dry boring teacher I have ever had. He sucks at life. Please get out while you can.
So sick of the sound of his voice. He hated certain people in the class and was rude to them, lots of reading and assignments that he doesn't explain the grades for, and pure lecture. If you take good notes and go to every class, you'll do well on the tests- they're fair. But he's rude and has an annoying voice.
Cocky, arrogant, and one of the most annoying voices I have ever heard, but he is a good teacher. Go to class, participate in the discussions, and read the assignments. Tests are really hard, so make sure you back up your grade by participating in the discussions on the articles you have to read. Those points will be what saves your grade.
This guy is such a jerk! He acts as if he is God's gift to the world and is very condesending and patronizing. An Introductory course should not be as hard as he makes it. Don't take him under any circumstance.
STAY AWAY!! Is overly involved with CULTURES...anti-american views/american-culture...needs to move to Zimbabwe in order to happy and culturized.Hard as crap..has favorites..doesn't care about you or your opnion...get out quick!
This guy is liberal, rude, arrogant, and a pain to deal with. His class is pure lecture and he has radical views on everything. He doesn't make anything that he is teaching practical. Stay far far away.
If you want to actually learn and dont mind a little work take this class. Opens your eyes to what the world is acutally like. You have to speak up in class and read the articles. There is 2 projects and they absolutely suck. The tests are straight from the notes and usually have two essays. Also, he thinks america is keeping down blacks, women etc
The previous post is total BS. Coggie doesn't open your eyes to the world, but in fact spends 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday talking about how bad American is and how the rest of the world is sooo much better than us. Has a harsh attendance policy and gives lot's of busy work. Hard grader!
he doesnt like girls. he accused me of plagarism and i didnt plagarize but he gave me a 0 for suspicion. i failed the class because of it. i hated him. he is crazy and he thinks hes a monkey!
This man knows his stuff, really nice liberal though, that's allways fun. He is very helpful but his tests are tough, but don't let that sway you from taking this class, you'll learn a lot. For me, this was my favorite class that semester.
The man thinks he knows everything about anything. He always holds you past the scheduled 50 minutes and has a strict attendance policy. If you are uncomfortable speaking on a regular basis in his class, DO NOT TAKE HIM...otherwise he'll say you have a mental disorder. His tests are straight from his notes but have to get them in class.
Dr. Cogg is a very difficult professor. He expects alot from his students, but he tells you this upfront. You will take notes everyday, all 50 minutes, and you will have to spend alot of time studying for his exams, BUT you will learn more from his classes then from most your others. He has a passion for his subject and has alot to share.
Well...the guy is a jerk (but he does so for a reason, and he constantly makes Anti-American statements (but for a reason)...All he wants to do is make you think and he does a good job of it. It's just WOW such a hard class and he's SUCH a hard grader unless you're sporting a 4.0 it's almost not worth it...so basically a toss up.
This is a very hard class, but a very interesting and informative class. This class challenges you in the best way possible. GO TO CLASS AND TAKE GOOD NOTES! If you take his suggestions for how to study pay attention and get actively engaged, you can do well.
Let's clarify some things. Coggie is a hard prof, plain and simple. Lecutres fill up the entire class and you must know everything for the test. He is also a jerk when in class. He says things you don't like and he expects you to respond. You must know everything for the test. With this said, I respect the man and will take him again. Enough said?
Very Hard, Liberal, and always goes past the 50 minute time period.
He's not very helpful and he is full of himself.
very hard, test are very detailed yet cant get much detailed because he talks way too fast, just make sure you read the articles and attend class everyday
If you want to take an anthropology class, DO NOT GET HIM AS A TEACHER!!! He always talks about himself and does not allow time for questions during his lectures (which end about five minutes after the class is scheduled to be over). If you give conservative comments in class, then he will deduct points off your grade.
He is very very very hard. Stay away from this professor at ALL costs. Everyone is our class is suffering majorly. He is a VERY harsh grader and I just wish that I would have looked on here before I took the class. Expects you to take notes the entire 60 minutes he lectures (its supposed to be a 50 minute class). HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!
Not a bad teacher, but an INSANELY hard grader and unnecesarily pompous. I remember one time he basically alluded that if you don't believe in evolution then you're no better than Joseph Stalin. Who knew?
His was my favorite class last semester. It's not an eazy A, but the material is very interesting. He makes it clear that he wants his students to be critical thinkers who don't just accecpt what's handed to them. Great Teacher, I'd recomend him.
This guy is a liberal jerk who finds comfort in the fact that we evolved from monkies... oh, if you disagree with him, you are wrong. Point blank.
My biggest problem is that Dr. C takes attendance 10 minutes before class starts, I would of had at least a B if I had known this at the beginning of the year. Most of what he teaches is by the book, although he adds his views alot. You can disagree with him if you argue your case well and show you did the reading, but it's easier to agree.
The WEIRDEST, most LIBERAL, HARDEST, WORSE, CRITICIZING, STRANGEST, professor at Clemson. STAY AWAY!!! RUN!!! He hates you and he is always right...the end. oh and we all are monkeys
Mr. C is an excellent teacher. He is very interested in his subject, and it shows in how he teaches. The class isn't super easy, but as long as you are willing to do outside reading and studying, you should be fine. He is very helpful if you go to him during office hours.
Cogg. is a horrible teacher who does not care about his students. He is very very liberal who thinks we evolved from a monkey. Very harsh and unfair grader. Simply horrible. STAY AWAY!
he hates you already.
He is very cooky and very liberal, but he'll make you think in a way that you haven't before. You have to attend class regulary and participate to get a good grade, wish I had known that in the beginning. I would recommend this class if you're willing to put effort into it and participate in class. Don't take this class if you're offended easily.
It was horrible. don't bother trying to study because there's no possible way you can prepare yourself for his tests. I studied for numerous hours for each test and it didn't do me any good at all. Make sure you know absolutely everything about the articles because he grades the essays pretty harshly. Don't take him if you can help it.
Not a bad class, I suppose. He's a really interesting lecturer and can usually keep the entire class engaged long enough to actually learn something...On the other hand, he really makes tests/greading a lot tougher than need be and scares off or alienates a lot of people because of it. Maybe it makes him feel tough. Ah well...Whadda' ya gonna do?
It's not a class that you're going to get an easy A in but it's a class where you can get an A in if you put in the effort. His lectures are actually interesting and it's the first class that has ever changed how I think about things and gotten me to care. You do, however have to go to class and pay attention and take notes to do well.
He really love anthropology and makes sure you know it. The class was a little strange because a large portion of our grade was based on compositions we did in class about articles we had to read. It was really difficult to get a good grade on these because he was really specific about what he wanted. Also the final was killer and borderline insane
I loved this class and Dr. Coggeshall but I will admit it's not the easiest. There are a lot of little things that add up to affect your grade such as attendance, participation, and little essays. The tests are alright but you need to know your notes very well. I ended up with a B. Overall, Coggeshall is a great teacher and I'll have him again.
Very fun and interesting class. Tests are almost ridiculous sometimes of the details you are required to remember. A lot of studying and note taking needed.
HORRIBLE!!!!! Steer clear. Don't take this class unless you arrive 15 minutes before class is supposed to begin. He takes roll 10 minutes early...EVERY TIME. Quite possibly the weirdest person in the state of South Carolina. His voice is highly annoying. His tests are ridiculous. Oh, you will learn that you came from monkeys.
Excellent professor, but expects a lot of you. If you want an easy professor, he is not it, but if you really want to learn something, I recommend him. He really knows what he is talking about and is willing to help you if you need it. You have to go to class and take very detailed notes if you plan to do well, the test are fairly difficult.
nooooooooooo!!! horrible, horrible, horrible.
Horrible class!!! Avoid at all costs. He takes this subject way to seriously. Tests are impossible the Avg. on most of the tests are low C's and more than plenty of people fail. He likes to think that this subject is the most important subject at Clemson. You have to write an essay every other class.
Thinks this class is the reason everyone comes to clemson. Gives homework like its the only class you are taking. Ridiculous tests, stupid project, in class essays once a week. I'm generally an A student and i got a C with some effort. Overall, worst class I've ever taken at Clemson hands down.
Horrible professor. There is no text book because he thinks he knows everything about anthro. He doesn't realize the class is just Gen Ed. He's reported to be helpful, but only if he likes you. I still have no idea why I made half the grades I did. Tests is hard for no reason. He's extremely anal and very high on himself. Take someone else.
AVOID THIS CLASS. I am an "A" student that has never struggled to stay awake as much as I did in the class. He has a fascist attendance policy. He calls students out when they need to go to the bathroom. VERY tough grader. Stupid and pointless assignments. Ridiculous tests. Horrible lecturer and he loves to exploit you when your wrong . DON'T TAKE!
I've taken every class Dr. Cogg teaches and have come up with this conclusion...no matter what he says, his outlook on the world is the only correct one. If you disagree with what he deems as the 'appropriate' outlook on the world, he thinks you're ignorant and have been brainwashed by the mass media. It seems we weren't enculturated correctly.
dr. cogg is the reason that i plan to get my masters degree in anthropology. yes he is difficult. yes you actually have to go to class and take detailed notes and write essays - welcome to college people! the information is very interesting and definitely go to his office if you need help!
Coggeshall is probably the best teacher i have ever had. This class was extremely interesting and Coggeshall really knows his stuff and is more passionate about his subject than any teacher i have known. If you want an easy class this is not the class to take, but if you want to learn a lot, information that is really interesting, take him.
His lower level classes are actually the toughest. These classes typically have the highest number of students. The tests are difficult and extremely specific. But, Dr. Cogg has helped me tremendously in the field of Anthropology. He is an asset to any student that is willing learn anthropology. And he's really hilarious once you get to know him.
Dr. Cogg is a wonderful professor. He teaches with enthusiasm and is extremely knowledgeable. The class is not super difficult but it does require dedication. He always provides a study guide which includes all you need to know. The material is very interesting.Attendance and participation are mandatory.Take notes, pay attention and you'll be ok.
Found Dr. Coggeshall to be highly pretentious and condescending. One of those professors who believes he is blowing your mind wide open whenever he lectures. Contemptuous of all differing perspectives. Looks for his own opinions in essays and focuses on the trivial in exams. Avoid unless you really want that double Gen. Ed. credit.
Great teacher. I am shocked at what the most recent comments say about him hating America. He has never acted in such a way. He is extremely knowledgeable in cultures outside of America because that is what he does. Tests are difficult. This class requires critical thinking. Gives study guide prior to every test. Need help? Go to him.
I am completely sick of hearing all of the complaining going on about Dr. Coggeshall. He is very fun and funny in class. People saying he hates America is just ignorant "patriots" overreacting to his honesty about western influence on the rest of the world. Taking good notes is the key to his class. Really good teacher.
I hated this class. I thought it was rather difficult for a controversial 200 level gen ed class. You take notes all class every class, have difficult tests, and have a project that is quite difficult as well. He tells you not to sweat the small stuff but his test essays are all about the tiny details of the notes which are all auditory. Avoid.
Dr. Cogg is a great teacher. The class IS lecture style and it is necessary to take a lot of notes. However, if you attend every class and take decent notes then with a little bit of studying it's easy to get at least a B, or an A with more effort. There is NOT a lot of homework, just an article or two to read a week, usually about 4 pages.
He is a great professor who is extremely passionate about his subject. Those who were offended clearly did not listen when he said these were the views of modern anthropology and not necessarily his own. He covers more material efficiently than any other professor I have seen. He's great!
Very hard class but if you come every day and listen you will do fine. Rememeber small details for the tests like DATES AND LOCATIONS. Very interesting subject if you approach it with an open mind.
Very good professor, one of the best I've had. He's a pretty cool dude, very easy to talk to and very approachable. Some people don't like him because they think he hates Greeks or he is too hard, but if you put in what you get out of the class. I've had to work pretty hard for a B, but it's been worth it. Take him if you are willing to work.
Class is super hard. He does not give study guides anymore. His tests are rediculous. Avoid. You take notes on his boring lectures the whole time.
Good teacher, knows his stuff. the whole class is listening to lecture and taking notes. TESTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE
Very good teacher. Its clemson so be ready to do work. As long as you take very good notes studying is easy. and if you pay attention you might learn that we didn't come from monkeys but have a common ancestor.
its sad that i smoke herb every day and i made an A yet all these kids complain about him. GOOD teacher. he begins taking attendance early so he can start lecturing on time. if you come in after he has takin attendance he still gives you credit as long as you go to him after class.
Hard class, have to take a ton of notes but it is doable. Tests are very specific and questions are worded so that you have to really know the material, not just have it memorized... I have about 75 typed pages of notes. If interested in them email me at [email protected]
The class is one of the most interesting I have ever had. If you want to make a good grade though, you really have to work for it. To do well on his tests you have to take incredibly good notes and go to class each day. He is a really good teacher, just be prepared to study your butt off for the exams. Also read the articles, those essays are hard.
Arguably the best teacher I have ever had. I have never had a teacher cover more ground in 40 class periods than this one. If you are interested in being educated on some of the more interesting topics ever explored, take this class. Tips for doing well: listen, take quality notes, study, and have an open mind.
WORST TEACHER EVER! do not take, and if this class is not mandatory for your major, don't take it either. It is a hard and demanding class. I studied for this class constantly and took quality notes and still did poorly on all his tests. When i met with him personally he didn't act serious because i was not failing the class (yet). BE PREPARED
Loved his class, he is a very interesting teacher and I loved going to his class, but he is hard. So I'd definitely recommend taking his class, but be prepared to work hard.
Dr. Coggeshall is a wonderful professor. His class is challenging, you have to take very good notes and read the articles closely, but you will learn a lot that applies to both school and life in general. Be open and listen. You can do well in this class, but you have to put in the effort, and he will help you if you ask.
He is a very interesting professor! i loved his class and am very glad i took it. Read the articles,go to class and take notes and listen. do this and you will be fine. He does a wonderful job of teaching and you will really learn a lot if you take this class. I would take it even if you don't need it for a requirement
He is a terrible teacher. He dropped me halfway through the semester for missing a meeting with him because I was sick. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He does not feel for his students whatsoever.
Dr. Coggeshall definitely knows what he's talking about. Be prepared to take a lot of notes, and make sure to read the articles and you should do fine.
Dr. Cogg is a great teacher. His class is really interesting. It is a challenge but if you get into it, it is very rewarding. Be ready to take alot of notes. Trust me though, it helps you remember for the tests. Also, study the way he tells you to. It works. Take this class if you want to be challenged and rewarded.
avoid him at all costs. He thinks he is the greatest thing in the world. he has the most annoying voice i have EVER heard. His tests are impossible. He is the definition of GDI
Dr. Coggeshall is a great teacher. He's not the easiest teacher in the world, but he is clear in his material and he's very helpful. His voice? It's different, but makes it fun to listen to him. He takes questions and doesn't mind being challenged. Have to go to class because his test cover what he lectures. Also read the articles they're not long.
Wonderful teacher!!! He makes you work for your grades, but I would retake his class in a heartbeat. He is always in his office during office hours if you need to talk to him about something. And he is very entertaining to listen to. Lecture style class, if you miss be sure to get all the notes!
This Guy is Hard. He is a very nice guy. Loves for you to come in and talk about your grades and does everything to get you on track but this class is very hard. No powerpoints. Straight lecture. I don't recommend taking it with him.
Dr. Coggeshall is a really knowledgable teacher, but as a person he's not the nicest. His teaching style is straight lecture--no powerpoints, no visual aids. I worked really hard in his class and got a B. If you can deal with him being as ass, take the class! the information is really interesting and useful.
His class is not worth the effort. It's all lecture and pop quizzes. He pays little attention to your success, expecting you to help yourself. The information is interesting but you can take a better teacher and get the same stuff. He has a huge ego and doesn't actually listen to anyone else, unless they say what he is thinking. memorize everything
Coggeshall is a very intelligent and kind man who inspired me to become an anthropologist. I see how people can say he is liberal, but c'mon we're in south carolina... he tells you exactly what you need to do to get an A, and he likes people to think out of the box. He doesn't press any of his beliefs onto others, people just interpret things wrong
Difficulty with this class is totally dependent on the student. If you come to every class, take detailed notes, read the assigned articles, and study (well) before exams, you'll do fine. If you miss days and don't get notes from someone, you're screwing yourself. Be prepared to write short essays every other class.
Do not take this class. His voice is really annoying, and all he does is lecture. 100% auditory. He thinks very highly of himself, and isn't very considerate of his classmates. I studied for hours and still didn't do well on the exam.
The class is interesting, but definitely a challenge. You have to take good notes and really pay attention. Plus it's important to always read the articles because there is usually a short essay to write. Coggeshall is not the most pleasant person to deal with, but he is helpful if you ask. Just don't expect an easy class. Overall, good class
The class itself is really interesting and Coggeshall tells you what to do to do well in the class. The problem is even if you work hard, the exam can kind of trip you up. You have to read the articles, but they aren't bad.
This is literally the best class I took in my life. Everyone should take it! It changes a lot of your beliefs and perspectives on life and makes you question things you never did before. It is a hard class, though so if you are lazy and expect an A to be handed to you, you won't do too well. If you actually try, you'll do fine.
Overall very interesting class. Come to class daily, take DETAILED notes, read the articles and STUDY HARD for the exams. They are not easy. Double check the scantron because you won't get those points back if the machine makes an error. Great lecturer, very interesting class. He gets REALLY excited about Primates!! Take him if you want to learn.
This class was so interesting. He's a great lecturer (although it is hard to get everything that he says written down). He tells you exactly how to get an A on the exams. Make sure to say something during every discussion.
This class is challenging, but I think it's completely worth it. I really did learn so much from this class. Dr. Coggeshall is willing to help if he can tell you're trying in the class, so he will work with you. The tests are hard, but, if you study, you should still be able to get at least a B. Attendance counts as a major test grade.
Brilliant course, loved it.
It is hands down the most interesting class I have taken at Clemson. If I could sit there all day and just listen to him tell stories I would... but then there are the tests and projects. I would start studying at least a week in advance because the tests are literally impossible. If you study a ton you should make a B. This class is not an easy A
Dr. Coggeshall is such an amazing teacher. This was by far my favorite class I have ever taken, although it was also the hardest class I have ever taken. I actually have to retake it because I didn't go to class and missed all the in-class essays, so make sure you go to class and read!
Dr Cogg's got swag. Anyone talking smack about how liberal he is clearly missed the point of his class. There's a difference between being liberal and accepting that we aren't necessarily better than everyone else. Dr Cogg teaches you how to see the world in a more objective way. If you aren't interested in that, don't take the class.
This class was without a doubt one of my favorite classes at Clemson and it isn't even in my major. It really deals with a lot of interesting things and he teaches them so well and with a lot of enthusiasm. Yes, the tests are hard but if you are consistent with going to class and taking notes you should be fine.
Most interesting class every taken, Dr. Cogg is brilliant and it wasn't at all difficult to focus in class even though it was completely lecture. I would STRONGLY recommend whoever takes this class to be a good writer, because the in class essays are important. The tests are hard, but definitely not impossible if you study and take good notes.
He's an interesting guy but I came into this class unprepared for the intensity of the course. He does not use notes or powerpoints, so you better be ready to type/write fast. The textbook is only articles and is of no help towards the content of the class but it is necessary for writing the journals. Basically, do NOT miss class.
Had no idea what to expect with this class, it turns out he is very interesting and full of information. The course is very hard but doable. He keeps his lectures very interesting even on the topics that are boring. Do not expect an easy A. But you will learn a lot through out the course.
He is the worst professor I've ever come across. The lectures are all auditory and he is very unclear about tests. They're impossible and he expects you to pick the "most widely accepted answer" and he will list an option of 3 CORRECT answers in the multiple choice questions. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM AS THE PROFESSOR!!!!!
VERY hard class. All he does is lecture, and the outline he gives you is minimal at best. Be prepared to be yelled at for making ANY noise or not taking enough notes. He is VERY full of himself. Would not recommend him to anyone. He does not make it clear what material will be on tests, and the questions are weighted terribly.
Vague. Unhelpful. Has high expectations. If you ask him for help, all he will do is pose a theoretical question that doesn't help at all. Its purely lecture, so if you miss something, you're in trouble. Tests are never easy and he does not prepare you well for them. I'm an A/B student and I have a C in this class. I don't make Cs.
I took Dr. Cogg's class Introductory Anthropology class about a year ago, and I can honestly say that I learned more in that class than any class at Clemson. He's a great teacher, and he's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about anthropology. I think the people that complain about him expect to be handed an A rather than actually working for it.
the WORST class i've ever taken and the WORST teacher i could ever imagine. solely lecture based, talks so fast, and he is SO set in his ways and beliefs. not interesting, too specific with details, and an overall terrible class. he's not helpful as a teacher and can be quite rude. i wouldnt recommend this class to my worst enemy.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!! The majority of the class will fail. This is not an easy class and the professor makes it extremely difficult because he thinks students take it for an easy A.
Dr. John Coggeshall has to be the worst professor at Clemson. He says he is there to help, until you ask for help. He just lectures all day about monkeys. I would not recommend him to anyone who cares about their GPA. Im sure he cares about the field of study, but it doesn't translate to his teaching. Please do not take it.
He is awful. DO Not Take this class with him. Anthropology is very interesting with a good instructor not with him. He won't write on the board or use power point, no textbook. You'll have to write notes as he talks which is annoying. He is very rude, and talks about inequality however he doesn't show any signs of equality towards his student.
Worst teacher at Clemson hands down. If you can avoid him do. If you can't avoid him change majors.
I have no idea how he is even still teaching. He preaches tolerance but doesn't show it. Him still teaching is a sign that clemson doesn't care about us.
Dr. Coggeshall is extremely rude, very arrogant, and extremely conceited. I have never studied more for a class to make a barely passing grade. When I went to him for help he simply insulted me because I was an engineering student. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
This guy is a piece of work. For a cultural anthropologist he has horrible people skills. If for some unlucky reason you have to take him I hope no one your family dies. My grandfather died and HE WOULDN'T EXCUSE ME FOR THE FUNERAL. He treats his students as morons. He isn't helpful and is a horrible representative of Clemson. He needs to leave.
Avoid this teacher. That is the only advice i can give you
This teacher is extremely clear on what he wants out of his students. His class may not be the easiest but if you come to class and pay attention you should at least receive a B. He also makes the class as interesting as possible because he is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. If you are going to take this class, take him.
This class is pretty difficult. It could possibly take up much of your time because you NEED to study nearly every day. You also have to read very often. However, the professor is very clear about what it is the student needs to do to get a passing grade in the class. He can be funny every now and again and the class itself is interesting.
He prides himself on how hard he makes the class, although he doesn't want people to fail he's happy that very few people get A's. He has no power points and rarely writes anything down, but still moves through material quickly. He repeats things that are totally irrelevant. I would never recommend him, definitely avoid taking his section.
I didn't mind the subject matter of the class, but his class is difficult. He packs so much information into his lectures that you will wind up with five different statements about one thing, but miss one small bit of information that will wind up on the test. He's also very rude and acts entitled.
Awful. Lecture based class, exams are impossible. DON'T TAKE HIM FOR ANTHROPOLOGY.
If you are interested in this subject matter he's a great person to take it from. A lot of people take Anth as an elective or cross-cultural looking for an easy A-- TAKE IT! Challenge your self, you learn a lot the subject matter is inspiring. All you have to do is go to class and take notes, he tells you how to get an A.
Wonderful teacher. Enjoyed the classlecture but definitely not the test. Take it if you want challenge!
Coggeshall tries to make the course as difficult as he possibly can. If you miss a couple classes you're going to struggle to pass. Going to him for help is useless because he is rude and completely insane.
Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to. The tests are impossible and the he is a hard grader on the few other assignments. He takes attendance and the homework is a lot of reading that you need to do in order to complete in class assignments.
Dr. Coggeshall was and will be the worst professor i will ever take at Clemson University. If you miss a single note from his lecture than you can count that as a missed question on a test. What he doesn't understand is that kids take his class as a "gpa booster" and then are horrified when they get their first grade back as a F (class majority).
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! he starts to take attendance 10 minutes before class starts so if your not there before class is scheduled you are "late". He doesn't do notes only talks the whole entire class. his test are ridiculously hard.
This is a hard class. But as a graduated senior, I can safely say this is the best class I ever took at Clemson University. I have traveled extensively throughout the world and I thought I knew a lot, but this class blew my freakin mind. Take it if you want to be a better human being.
Only gives oral notes. Talks the entire class period. If you miss one thing, you're screwed. Really harps on "You got into Clemson so I'm gonna make you work". I will say, this class gave very interesting viewpoints and had fun stuff to learn but exams were SO difficult it was nearly impossible.
This is the only class I've used academic forgiveness for. I could recite the notes almost word for word and still failed the tests. When I went to office hours for help, I asked him how I could improve and he said I didn't know the notes well enough. Mid to high level of pretentiousness. Would not recommend.
I took this class as a GPA booster, boy was I in for a surprise. Coggeshall believes that if you don't understand his class you aren't smart enough to be at Clemson. The class average is almost always failing and his only help is to "study the notes everyday." Avoid this class if at all possible. I had to use academic forgiveness because I failed.
I had all my notes completely memorized and failed every test. He's also very rude. I didn't get one of my class essays back and when I asked him about it he embarrassed me in front of the whole class, scolding me by saying I didn't complete my assignment. He later emailed me saying he forgot it in his office, but I never got any kind of apology.
Took this class to double dip and barely passes. Only gives oral notes for 3 hours a week with no indication as to what needs to be studied. Tests answers must be inferred, project expectations are unclear and grading is subjective. Required reading every class with pop quizzes and nothing relating to the test.
First of all, I really enjoy anthropology so I thought this class would be pretty easy because I enjoy the material but boy was I wrong. He lectures the whole entire times with no powerpoint no nothing. I memorized the notes word for word and still failed to first two tests. His project SUCKS and he doesn't really help you understand it.
Don't see why there are so many negative reviews of this professor! Class is not easy, but if you listen and type down everything he says you won't have any problem with the tests if you study--I make flash cards of notes and find tests exceedingly simple after such studying. Lectures for entire time but they are fast and interesting. Awesome prof.
Assigns a lot of reading and then has you write short essays on them at random times during class. He covers a lot of material in classes so you really can't afford to miss class. Pay attention to everything he says because you WILL be tested on it.
The class is extremely challenging. If you just want an easy gen-ed and took this one because its a double-dipper you should probably drop. On the other hand, Dr. Coggeshall clearly loves his field and is extremely knowledgeable. If you pay attention and try harder than you think you should, you'll do well in the class. You may really enjoy it!
Dr. Coggeshall is extremely knowledgeable about this field, however he expects a lot from students. I would recommend taking this class with a different professor if possible.
This class and Dr. Coggeshall are very challenging. He really expects a lot from his students, and you have to be prepared to listen to the entire lecture each class, as well as take detailed notes. That being said, I do recommend this class because I learned so much from it, and it was incredibly interesting.
Professor Coggeshall is very unhelpful and unaccomadating when it comes to his office hours. Also, students get spoken to after class if you leave to go to the bathroom... lol what who does that.
One of the worst professors at Clemson. If you get him drop immediately. Like take my advice this is an easy as hell class this professor just makes everything harder than it has to be an test you on things not even in the curriculum
His lectures are pretty interesting but you'll be expected to write down everything he says. However, he talks pretty slow and emphasizes certain material he wants you to know for the exams. The only knock I have on him is that he is an extremely tough grader (especially on projects) so expect to fight for a decent grade all semester.
John wants his students to do well but he's also been teaching his class for 20+ years so he has high expectations. Can easily make a B but must do well on the exams to make an A. Definitely take detailed notes and memorize every word you write down to do well on tests. Everyone should take an Anthropology class at some point in their life.
Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to. I wrote down every word he said in lecture, memorized all of my notes, and still barely pulled out C's on tests. He is very rude and doesn't care about the success of his students. Easily the worst professor I've ever had.
He is a tough grader. Going to every class is needed if you want to pass the class. With that said classes are normally interesting and he likes to keep the class involved. Be ready for a lot of reading. But he is extremely willing to go out of his way to help you and wants to get to know you.
Worst professor ever. Knows what he's talking about, but thinks he's better than all his students because he knows more. Has his TA watch and make sure everyone is paying attention, refuses to write things down because he thinks his students won't pay attention. Test are so specific and makes you read articles with the threat of making you write.
He only thinks about himself.
I highly push for other students to drop this class if taught by this professor. It can be a fun course and a gen-ed but his negative demeanor and cocky attitude towards the subject leaves the student hopeless for a decent grade. If he doesn't already know you from previous class he will talk down to you; and he grades so incredibly strict. Avoid
This is the worst class I will probably have ever taken. The class averages on the essays are never higher than a C, and the Tests are filled with specific questions that he only mentions once in a lecture. His class is nearly impossible to make an A in, unless you devote ALL of your studying to this single Gen-Ed class. Horrible Class.
Get ready to read, as you have 20 readings and 11 in-class essays on the readings without knowing which readings will have essays. You have three exams, including the final, but he is good on not adding one to midterm week. However, these exams aren't easy at all, so be prepared to take 2-4 pages of notes a class. YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR A GOOD GRADE.
Technically, attendance isn't mandatory, but he usually gives 1-2 pop quizzes a week, and they take enough off of your grade that you'll want to be in class. There's no excused absences in his class. I was genuinely interested in the information, and studied really hard for this course, and I still am barely passing. He's a very tough grader.
He gives grades on attendance, so as long as you come to every class, you will get a 100 as a test grade basically. That was the only thing that saved my grade this semester. The tests are insanely in depth and unless you are able to memorize literally every word he says, a B is the highest you can hope for in this class, and thats if you're lucky.
John Coggeshall is by far the worst professor at Clemson University (and that is saying something). It would be one thing if he cared for his students and had a hard class, but he just flat out doesn't care if you pass or fail his class. He loves to brag about how low students score on tests in his class. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!
Worst professor Ive ever had. For starters he wouldnt let anyone go to the bathroom and he doesnt allow excused absences. He doesnt use PowerPoints, so if you dont write down everything he says word for word you wont get a good grade. There is lots of reading and essay writing. He doesnt care about the success of his students.
All right guys this is is a gen ed but YOU CANNOT PASS WITHOUT WORK. This is the first thing you must understand. The class is insanely interesting and I'm planning on double majoring in Anthro because of this class. I currently have a 98 in the class and got an A on Exam 1. You. Can. Do. This. With hard work. Do not doubt your abilities.
Worst class I've ever taken. So much material to retain for tests. It's not fair that he takes a class that should be an easy gen ed class and makes it into the hardest class he possibly can. Don't take this class.
Don't take this class with this professor. He will crush your spirit and make you hate the topic. He is obviously very knowledgeable about his field. However, the fact that he talks down to his students, and tries to make as many people fail as possible, which makes it hard. He thinks he knows best and if you dispute, then your doomed to fail.
If you're an anthro major, do not get scared away by Cogg in intro!! He is a super interesting & fun prof in his more specific anth classes. While it is still a lot of hard work, Cogg is a great lecturer. Taking good notes is extremely important bc he does not have powerpoints, but his classes are doable and you end up learning a lot
Dr. Cogg gets a lot of flack, but his lecture style is more helpful than you think and if you put the work in, you'll get to where you want to be. This class was so insightful and I would recommend it to absolutely anyone. He really cares about people and students and it shows.
Dr. Cogg is an amazing professor. For those of you that think otherwise, you are obviously not challenging yourself academically. Dr. Cogg taught me more in the few classes I had the pleasure of taking with him than I learned every other class combined in my undergraduate education. He teaches you how to think critically and apply your knowledge.
This is a really intense class I would recommend getting a different professor if you really want to take anthropology he only gives you an outline at the beginning of the year and then you fill it in during the lectures but if you miss one sentence he says you will get something wrong on the test he also does a small lecture right after the tests
I suggest every student takes a Native American cultures class. This is my favorite professor in the anthro dept (I'm taking my 3rd class with him soon) and he was so passionate and respectful about the course material. Every class was very interesting. Expects a lot from his students and his classes are lecture heavy but it's definitely worth it.
A great professor, but his classes are a lot of work. I would suggest taking notes on your laptop using OneNote. You can type what he says verbatim while recording him. If you miss part of the lecture, you can make a note and go back to the exact spot in the recording. Ive found this is the best way to take notes for him. Good luck!
Professor Coggeshall means well, although some students think he is out to get them. In order to succeed in this class here are a few tips: 1. Go to class and participate (these are easy grades) 2. take notes on your laptop, handwritten notes are too slow for his pace 3. study like every 2 days 4. read the freaking articles
DO NOT TAKE. His grades are copletely based on writing, as exams are all essay and short answer, and he subjectively grades. You may know the info for a test front and back and recieve a 50. Grades are not determined on how well you know the material, but by his feelings of it. He will crush your spirit. The arbituary grading is unethical.
While taking this gen ed, I was marked down an entire letter grade for attendance. Apparently, I got marked absent for briefly using the restroom during lecture. When I went to his office hours to plead my case citing basic human rights, but he didn't budge. The lectures and readings are interesting, but his tests are unreasonable. DO NOT TAKE!
Dr. Coggeshall is honestly way too tough for intro to anthropology. He is very condescending when you talk with him in office hours and doesn't seem to care if his students fail or not. In fact I heard he brags about his lowest test grades. I thought this would be a good gen ed class but he is too subjective at grading. Avoid him at all cost.
Our exams were 12 hours long and he gave no regard as to what other classes we may have had on exam days, lectures were still held on exam days, and we had up to two essays due each week (still due on exam days).
Dr. Coggeshall is by far the WORST professor I have had while at Clemson University. He grades unfairly and inconsistently, you can know all the material for an exam and still flunk it because he just does not like your answer. He grades differently for everyone. I highly recommend doing yourself a favor and NOT taking this class.
Dr. Coggeshall is a super strict grader and is really vague in terms of giving feedback. Homework is usually reading an article based on what he lectures in class and then writing a short essay based on a prompt he gives for the article. Make sure you go to lecture and take detailed notes, but don't be surprised if you still don't get a great grade
Worst professor. I really love anthropology as a subject but he ruined it for me! He literally grades without caring about other people's ideas or knowledge. He fails you if you don't know the information by heart but he also fails you if you DARE to ever include your own opinions or ideas (which the essays and exams always ask for!).
I feel as though Dr. Coggeshall should not have been teaching this class. He seems to be a good professor, but he taught his Intro to Anthropology class like he would teach a Junior or Senior level course. His grading is inconsistent and he doesn't really say what he is grading for.
Professor Coggeshall is very intelligent about anthro but he expects his students to have the same level of knowledge. His class is SO essay heavy and he's a super harsh essay grader. If you reach out and ask him how to improve your grade or do better on the essays, the response you'll likely get will be to "Be more specific, use more examples".
DON'T TAKE. I will say if you have to take him (bc he's the only professor) be ready to side with him on all matters. He is unreasonable, has unfair expectations, and is often unwilling to cooperate with you if you have some extenuating circumstance. The weekly essays are graded harshly, and if you don't take the side he wants you are penalized.
Professor Coggeshall offers very little grace on any assignments. I'm taking INTRODUCTORY Anthro and it is horrible. On the exams even his own words don't cut it the class average was typically around 50% and nobody has gotten a 100. The hw is only essays that are roughly graded. Do not take this class especially if you are a freshman.
Okay, so I would definitely take Anth 2010 again with him if it werent for a grade. His lectures are extremely interesting, but no matter how invested you are in the content, you will probably not get the grade that you want. The entire class is essay based, so no matter how well you know the material, you could still easily get a bad grade :/
This class is entirely essay based. Every homework is an essay and exams are just extremely long essays. It is all interpretation based, and if you do not interpret it the same way as him, you are wrong. He is a very harsh grader. You think paying attention in class and taking detailed notes every class will lead to success, but no.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had in my 4 years at Clemson. He does not specify why you get the grade you get and if your opinion on a problem does not match his, kiss your grade goodbye. The whole class is essays, including the test. To put it in perspective, I have around 50 pages of notes for each exam and get 50s every time.
This is the perfect example of a professor who didnt know how to teach online class. This resulted in a 24 hour essay online final which was insanely difficult. If you understand what he wants from you on your assignments youll do fine if not go ahead and drop the class.
There is no Text for this class. The lectures are just him talking nonstop and you are given an outline with just the main topics as headlines. If you do not go to class regularly and take GOOD notes (like word for word what he says) you will not do well. His exams are just 5-7 essay questions min 300 words each. Do NOT take if you want an easy A.
This is a class where you even though you put in the work, you arent going to get the results that you want. I spent 2 hours doing one of the readings only to get a 10% on the assignment. At the end of the class, only 2 people got an A overall. This class is GPA suicide and the teacher grades extremely hard. however, the class is interesting.
This class was difficult but the structure of class is genius and really effective for truly learning the material. I took Intro on a chance because I did not get into a different class, and because of Prof. Cogg I am majoring in anthropology. The challenge of this class is important and demands more than critical thinking!
Dr. Cogg is incredibly interesting but has very high expectations for his students. This class had almost daily in class essays based on the assigned readings (1-2 articles per class period). There are good discussions and participation in these discussions is a large part of your grade. Tests are very extensive; the final is minimum 12 pages
I'm a 3.2 student and excel in writing papers. His first "exam" was a 6000 word essay, due 12 hours after open. I scored ABOVE the class average with a 52%. Met with him for off hours and told me that he would not be curving this exam because it wasn't his fault that we (his students) had nothing interesting to say. It was an intro course...
Dr. Coggeshall is a difficult teacher. Expect to read a lot. He's a very tough grader but has a formula to succeed. This class is not an easy A. You will learn a lot and the class material is pretty interesting. Not many resources are provided, he only lectures and you are expected to remember every detail he says.
Dr. Coggeshall is not an understanding individual. I missed 3 classes for covid and he did not allow those to be counted as excused until I reached out to the dean. He has since graded my essays extremely harshly compared to the beginning of the semester. He is very opinionated.
The class itself is super hard, but if you sit up front, pay attention, take notes, and ask questions the class will end up being way easier. His exams are hard andI recommend studying a few days in advance, but overall he is a great teacher!
Dr. Cogg amazes me with every class I take of his. In all his classes, he wants his students to succeed! He often curves the grading scale or your personal grade based on class averages and your growth through the course. His classes are difficult but the challenge is necessary and so fruitful. He makes his students feel worthy and important.
He grades incredibly harshly on essays and the tests are impossible, and those are the only grades for the class aside from attendance. He gives essays on assigned readings almost every class. I read the assigned reading twice and took notes and received a 70 or 80 on every single one. I hate this class and the professor is even worse.
I'd genuinely would rather have a child with my mother than take this class again
Don't listen to the reviews. Dr. Coggs is an amazing teacher, but does have high expectations. Keys to passing the class: Attendance, participation, regular studying with *thorough* notes. Be willing and prepared to change how you study. He does care about his students, you just have to put in the work.
There is no PowerPoint or a way to find out what happened in class unless you come or ask a partner. If you do not come to class, you will not pass. Readings every week spanning from 4-13 pages and a 3-page essay. Besides all of that, he is amazing. It is an extremely hard class if you don't try though. He wants you to succeed.
I love the man and his desire to see students succeed but this course is a tough one. Weekly papers and readings aren't the end of the world but the way he grades them makes it very difficult to do well. I took this class as a History major and really struggled. He loves his Anthro people, which is expected, overall- great person, very hard class.
I loved this professor. He's extremely passionate about his teaching, and the topic is so interesting. He's definitely a tough grader, and I did struggle in his class but as long as you prepared for exams and the short essays you write for class, you'll be okay.
This class was significantly harder, and I did not enjoy it as much. The project was stressful and required things that a socially anxious person would not want to do. However, he is open to change, and that's a wonderful trait for a professor to have. From the other reviews, it would seem that is not the case. But it is! Best to take him for 2010.
I love anthropology, but I dreaded this class. If you don't enjoy speaking-only lectures or not knowing when you will have essays in class, this professor is not for you. If he doesn't look your way, you lose participation points. He delivers the material fine, and his study guides are helpful. But he is strict and speaks dismissively.
I was originally going to have a B according to the syllabus, but he curved last minute. Cogg is a great guy and he had a lot going on in his personal life this semester but still put so much time into this class. It is very tough. You MUST read and come to class. Understand everything he says and know what he wants you to write and you'll do fine.
Dr. Cogg is an incredible professor who is extremely passionate about his field! He requires a lot out of you because he wants you to succeed. His grading can be tough but that's again due to high expectations. He's no nonsense, but wants to help you however he can. If you have questions... ASK! He will never turn you away!
Dr. Coggeshall was a hard grader. The class content was interesting and I enjoyed it, but his grading was harsh. There's lots of reading, timed essays, graded participation, and a huge project involving meeting with an international student. The class is hard, but I did learn a lot. I recommend only taking it if your class load isn't super heavy.
Cogg is incredibly unreasonable about people's lives outside of class. Even with a valid doctor's note from a serious ER visits, he will take off credit for participation that day. He once told me that I was distracting the class by leaving to vomit. I had to drop out that semester due to poor health. Even though he knew I was sick, he didn't care.
Lots of articles to read with in class essays. The exams are mostly free response, and the projects are all essays (and interviews) which he grades very toughly. The material is very interesting, but there's a lot of work in this class. Participation and attendance are also important. He only speaks (no slides) and you must be in class for notes.
Professor Coggeshall's class is no easy A, but engaging with the material can really pay off. Utilize study aids like unstuck study alongside the readings to stay on top of this challenging yet interesting course.
This has been one of the most informative classes I have ever taken, and Cogg's expertise only aids the class. He's a difficult professor and isn't compatible with everyone since he doesn't use PowerPoint, but I feel that his knowledge makes up for this in every way.
He's the only cultural anthropology professor here so if there's any possible way for you to avoid taking that class - I highly recommend it. The flow of his lectures is difficult to follow, he refuses to repeat himself or slow down for you to write, and frankly his voice is just annoying.
Attendance is important, notes are not posted. Good lectures & interesting course material. Participation is important & worth 4% of your grade, which can hurt or help you. You'll have in class essays, which are pretty difficult. Tests weren't too bad, just study in advance. The big project was also really fun. Hard global challenge, but its doable
Dr. Cogg is very knowledgeable about his field and I found this class very informative. That being said, even when paying attention and taking very thorough notes I still struggled quite a bit in this class. He is a tough grader and the lectures can be a lot sometimes, but I do not hate him or his classes. Overall, just be prepared to put in effort
Amazing professor!! Every lecture is so entertaining- he really makes you think. It is reading heavy but the articles are so interesting. Would DEFINITELY take again!
Theories is not what you'd expect for a class with Dr. Cogg- it is all discussion and if you don't talk, you won't do well in this class. I left every homework session with a headache. His strong suit is story telling and that really isn't in this class… despite that, I learned a lot. I just wish the discussion was more balanced with lecturing.
Dr. Cogg is amazing but there is no doubt that this is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. There is a lot of reading and pop essays. The exams are very important so make sure you study those the most. He gives you the guide a week in advance. Outside of the work, he is kind and cares about how his students do. It is a very rewarding class.
I truly believe this professor is so arrogant that he refuses to adjust his teaching style to cater to the many types of learning styles and this is why he speaks from a sheet of paper for the entire lecture and refuses to create a powerpoint or display any notes of the sort on the powerpoints. Dont take this class
Please only take this class if you absolutely have to, and I mean if it is absolutely the only class on degree works that will fit into your schedule. Do not voluntarily do this to yourself when there are other options available. The material is actually so interesting and important to know but this professor is not worth learning it from.
An amazing, well taught class! Cogg is a tough grader on tests, but if you do the readings and participate in class you will be well rewarded.
A tricky class to take for a Global Challenge, but the course material is so interesting and you gain amazing critical thinking skills through this class.
I've never made one of these, but this is how bad this professor is. He has no PowerPoint, so if you miss one class, you have to get notes from someone else. He's a tough grader, and you have essays based on articles that are also hard.
My 23-year-old cousin died two weeks before her wedding. I asked for time off to attend her organ donor walk of honor. He denied it, saying cousins aren't immediate family per the university handbook. His lectures are hard to follow, and he shows little empathy. Rules matter, but compassion should too. Nothing seems to have changed since last time.
Genuinely a horrible professor and human. Has no empathy for any situation. Ruined anthroopolgy for me, I withdrew myself the course and switched majors. Nothing anyone can do about it, he is tenured.
