I loved his class, his lectures were interesting and so were the books. He's funny and keeps you interested. Tests are essays and identification, lots of writing. If you review the notes you'll do fine.
This guy was awsome. He is great, funny, and very very informative. Takes your questions with a passion of making you understand, and he does a good job.
Great professor that makes Anthropology fun and easy to understand. Not much written assignments in the class. Tests are fairly easy if you attend lecture and take good notes.
great professor. very fun and interesting. test are easy too if you study your notes.
John Collins is the man! He's funny, easy, and very clear. Gets his point across and you learn in the process. One of the best. Go to class (you'll want to go), take notes, study review sheet..easy A
he's funny and intresting. makes you want to listen. the books are kinda wierd but better than a big text book. test are easy, he gives you the review, study it and you'll get a good grade
I LOVE PROF. COLLINS! His class is so interesting. Most of the books were easy to read, yet very informative, kind of like his class! I can't believe I learned SO MUCH while having such a great time! Come on, we even did the samba outside once.. =]
The best anthro class I ever took. Did I also mention he's hot! He makes class interesting. His exams are pretty easy if you come to class. He is helpful, smart and easy going with the work. Not alot of papers just 3 exams and 3 books to read.
Prof Collins is the best in anthro 205. He is very helpful, knowledgeable, and fair. You will learn a big deal. I highly recommend him.
This man is great .. brought an interesting perspective on anthropology and his material wasn't all that bad .....
love you
John Collins is an awesome professor. He is really passionate about teaching and very helpful. He's also really hot!!!
He is the best teacher I've had in QC. He si clear about everthing he says and as long as you keep up woth the reading and understand the review, you will get and easy A. If he gives you the choice between multiple choice tests or short answer, pick the short answer, trust me.
take this class. hes very interesting, speaks from experience. he lets the class choose btwn short answer and multiple choice...CHOOSE SHORT ANSWER! He likes to give partial credit. Very interesting class, the books are easy to read. Great Professor, one of the best I've had so far. He's hot too!
Knows his stuff, very knowledgeable, make an effort and you will get results. very cool bc he speaks enough portugese and spanish to communicate. pretty hot too. truly a genuinely nice guy
It's worth coming to class just to see him. Probably, the hottest man on campus!
History of Mexico was the name of the course. Collins is very kind and fair, the only annoying thing was he tended to talk past time...too much knowledge to cram in one session? His papers are 6/7 on a 1-10 scale. Very fair grader. Make sure to read all materials.

Very, VERY nice man. Willing to help with whatever confusions you have. Genuinely cares about the students. A bit on the tough side but a worthy LASAR choice.

Go to class, listen, get an A... He does happen to be a bit strange but can be interesting some times
he talks a little too fast and you'll have to keep up to write the notes. the books are interesting, my class was large so attendance wasn't taken, tests were okay. got a 90 on the first exam and midterm and got an 84 on the final, he gave me an A - in the class. I def. would take him for anthro 101.
cares for his students, genuinely nice + easy-going, pretty interesting lectures, crazy-easy exams, had to read a lot of somewhat-interesting material, not much written work
great class, great teacher
the prof really cares about his students he wants you to do well nad hell spend his time discusing things over with u ... if for wateva reason u may not feel confortable with the matireal he teahces u can def discuss it with him and hell werk st out..very intrsesting and sympathizgin guy. i liked him he was a goo dprof... would def recomend him..an
great professor!!!
he's okay. not as great as everyone makes him out to be.
well.. he is not a bad guy.. but not easy.. fair grader..
If you're a conservative, do not take him. I personally loved his class and thought his stories were really entertaining, but many of the books, films and lectures could be offensive. He puts huge curves on his tests that are already easy, and you read actual books rather than a textbook, which is great. I definetly recommend him for leftist.
GREAT professor!!!!!! He tells u EXACTLY wat he needs u to know and is VERY helpful. He even had an extra study session before the final exam. Take this professor, u won't regret it!!!
Simply The BEST. You'll love this guy. He teaches you Soooo much!
great teacher...fun class
Great teacher who give fair grade. It's a fun class & give extra review session be4 the final. Also the exames are not so hard
Great teacher enjoyed his class made me want to take more anthro classes
Realllly nice guy, funny and pleasant to sit in class. Not too much work but read the books so you know whats going on in class. Tests are fair but sometimes a little tricky. Overall, good class!
great teacher, strongly recommand taking his class, very easy, test are easy. gives great review sheets. you should do very well especially if you read the books he assigns.
by far the best professor at queens colllege..not too much work..makes you get so interested into his class even if you dont want to..u end up participating and enjoying it..he is very humble and knowledgable..only gave journals entries to do once a week due fridays thru email..and final exam which was take homein which u just write ur thoughts
He was a great professor! His lectures are very interesting and he is not boring. His test are very fair and he does not give too much work. All you have to do is read the books so you could understand what is going on in class.

great prof, teaches interesting and helps students
He is one of the worst professors in QC! I've taking many classes and not too many professors are as arogant as Collins. He is only concerned with his personal work like the book he is writing. He couldn't care less for the class he teaches. He shows no interest in helping students. When he occasionally does, he wants to be praised for it. dont tak
Who does Collins think he is?? He talk with such authority, but he does not care about his students, although he acts like he dearly does. He gave too many books to read during the semester but the student's grades don't concern him. Bottom line, don't take him.
Professor Collins is a great teacher. He cares about the subject and people who want to learn. If you don't want to learn then that's your problem! Some people just want an easy A in Anthro 101 but maybe they should do the reading!!!
good professor, cares about his students if you show minimal interest. do min. reading and pay attn and you should get an A.
Prof Collins is a nice guy and a great teacher for 101. Take this class, write notes, and do the reading and you will do well even if you are not an Anthro major
iwasnthappywith his teaching because wedidnt have an Anthrotextbook to learn from.we only had to take notes from his lectures and thats hard to do and wont helpu do well on the test esp.when u dont understand everything he says on the lectures.we also had to read 4 big useless novels which he barely talked about and the tests was based on that also
his classes are enjoyable and the books he assigns are quite interesting.
prof collins is awesome!
Boring class. Bad teacher
Prof Collins is thinks in weird ways. But they're cool too. If you go to class and read the books his tests are easy.
loved this class... he is extremely funny so your never going to be bored... disturbingly interesting movies... pretty interesting books that we had to read... but you need to go to his lectures he bases most of his tests on that and wont give you his notes if you miss the class for no good reason...
Pretty laid back. And easy professor. Participate a couple of times and he calls on you a lot. Missed a few classes, but your attendance is recommended. Read one of the books, took lot of notes and got a B. Just make sure to take lots of notes and don't skip out on any of the films!
He is a great professor. This professor is able to expand your thinking in a way a few professors can. He is very challenging and he gives a lot of reading. The reading he assigns is very interesting and enjoyable. He cares about students who want to learn. He is very knowledgeable. He might be forgetful and disorganized but he makes up for it!
His 201 is awesome but hard. If you just wants to come in and learn weird facts about people then Prof Collinsn is not for you. But if you want to understtand what anthropology does and how anthropologists think then he's the best there is.
Prof Collins is the most interesting professor at Queens. This class is hard but you learn a lot.
He wants you to "get" the reading using an understanding he doesn't teach.Doesn't prepare lessons never stands up or puts anything on the board , late with everything - never gives feedback about what you have written and thinks frustrating you with empty scattershot lectures make him Aristotle. Smart gut - bad teacher .
Very difficult to understand the reasoning he uses- and wants you to use . No one in the class really understands what he is saying half the time . This class is a chore - no fun at all which anthro kind of should be , this is like calculus .
This instructor does not prepare lessons - never a note-and it shows they are incomprehensible. Late with everything including our 12-15 page midterm . He wants you to analyze texts using methods he has not taught . Over the head of nearly everyone in the class , I got nothing out of this class except an aversion to Anthro
Read the books and its an easy A.
I am handing in a 19 page midterm exam - on may 5 - he has no idea what he is doing in this class - bad lectures . I failed a test for the first time in college in this class avoid it !
He gives a lot of reading and expects plenty of writing from his students, but he could possibly be the smartest professor on the entire campus. He helped me notice things i would never even think about while reading anthropological texts! He is very insightful and welcomes new ideas and comments. He really knows his course material well.
He's lazy, boring, and incomprehensible. He goes on tangents that have little to no relevance to the class material, and provides no direction for the exorbitant and elusive assignments he requires. He feigns an interest for his students' progress, but don't be fooled; his primary interest "teaching" his class with as little effort as possible.
if you do your readings, Collins is the best professor at queens. if you dont like study avoid him.
Great class. This man is a genius. Not a hard grader if you do the work and participate.
good prof but a bit scattered with his lectures. he would talk about one thing and jump to something else mid sentence. not fun when your writing notes and it doesnt make any sense afterwards. but the guy knows what he is talkin about pay attention to the class and you will pass.
Hard class because he makes you think a lot and doesnt give you the answers but if you do the work he is actually an easy gradder!
not well
he's pretti good proffessor take it if you can he grades easily and doesnt give alotta of papers. he prepares u for the midterm and he doesnt expect to know anything that he doesnt say. at times he jumps around in lectures with what he says but he ties it up all up in discussion section..take it if u need it or jus wanna kno about anthro
Highly Recommended.
I'm obsessed with him! He is a great teacher, his quirkiness is hysterical, he has a gr8 sense of humor which keeps the class interesting. I loved the Nisa book. He cares about his students. Easy multiple choice tests. He once brought it amazing Capoeira and Samba dancers to class- it was incredible. Don't take Anthro 101 w/ another teacher!
Don't take his class!!! Do not take his class! Please! Believe Me!!!! You have to read 4 very boring and useless books, write two essays. And he always come late for classes. For the final exams, he did not give us any review, and tomorrow is the final day, he even did not post the right answer of past two exams on black broad so far.
fun class, nice guy. the capeoira class was the best. Tests are not too hard, multiple choice.
he's smart but lazzy...
good class, nice guy but definitely not hot! only fat :/
If you are taking 101, TAKE THIS PROF! The class is so interesting. He teaches based on actual experience. He does not use a boring text book, but still teaches all the necessary concepts. Amazing!!!! Teacher, Probably my favorite, as far as teaching style. All professors should learn from him,if they could match his enthusiasm.
He's a really nice guy and his course is great. He wants you to read and you ned to to get what he talks about in class but you dont need to do it all
he's such an interesting professors, makes you think about things one takes for granted and if you're planning on becoming a cultural anthropologist, he's the most insightful and experienced professor you can talk to. he's amazing!!! he's also very flexible and an easy grader but you need to, at least, be able to keep up with the readings assigned.
If you want to get anything out of class, you have to think on your feet - his train of thought can be a hard one to follow. In the end though, its not as complicated as you might think. Easy grader (in my opinion), interesting guy. The films he showed were interesting. HW was reading and online responses, exams were take-home. Complex, but not bad
He is a cool guy very funny, but whenit comes to the structure of the class and learning in terms of the context of the books he assigns...well he can go off topic. It was hard to comprehend or understand the material when it wasn't discussed in class because he decided to talk about something else. Make sure to study a lot on your own
overall good guy. a little confusing and all over the place, hard to follow when taking notes, loves brazil,
It's those types of class where you can cut and mess around with as long as you do your readings. He tends to give out review sheets and go over main topics before a test. Of course you don't want to miss his class, cause their GREAT! His stories are insightful and makes each lesson unique. Sure some of them are off toic, but hey review sheets duh!
Sometimes you tink he's all over the place then he ties it back in if you listen. great class. not hard
FABULOUS PROFESSOR!! All professors should learn from him. He really gets you zoned in, you think outside the box and even after you leave class. Tests are fair and Lectures are excellent! Take him even if you're not interested in Anthro just bc he's that AMAZING!
This Professor. lol his way of teaching and talking both are very funny and I enjoed his class a lot! Didn't even read the textbooks and the tests had only about 5 out of 50 questions based on the readings. Very easy if you just pay attention on the class discussions which are funny and easy to understnad.
super cool guy. went off on rants a lot but tied it into the lecture eventually. long but easy midterm and final. you can always contact him if you have questions. one of my favorite professors so far.
great class to fill 3 core requirements at queens college. you actually learn something in this class, listen to this guy. he has real life experience and says some philosophical stuff sometimes. enjoys participation so for all you talkers, this is your class. he's a sweet guy that will help if you approach him. too bad he's only in the anth. dept.
He is not as good as others make him sound. It is impossible to take notes since he is all over the place, and he required reading 3(!) books. This is ANTH 101. It's suppose to be easy and fun. It was neither.
HE IS AWESOME! MUST TAKE HIM!!!! he is very down to earth and makes the subject interesting. 3 tests and he gives review sheets before each one. always helpful and wants us to do well. overall there is no bad side to him and its a no brainer
John Collins is a fabulous man. I loved taking his class, I even had my friend go to a class because it was so good. Favorite professor. LOVE HIM!!!
Interesting professor. The course material largely revolves around him and his life experience, but you do end up learning a lot. As long as you come to class and read the books you'll be OK. 3 easy multiple choice tests, no HW. He also shows lots of movies.
He's a good professor. He speaks with gusto. His exams get harder as they go but they are not that bad overall. You should take him!
Nice guy, interesting books and discussion. He asks lots of questions that are difficult to answer but they're interesting
John is the man. He makes class extremely interesting. Loves Brazil, possibly a bit to much. But overall, an amazing professor. Wish i could take him again.
Everything from this course is based on professor Collins opinion. You will never use any of this information in real life and is completely irrelevant to anythIng you've learned in previous anthro classes. Don't take this class.
Great teacher u read four mad books
You can tell this man loves Brazil from the way he teaches about it!
Terrible waste of my time. I came expecting a lot and ended up with nothing. The man is smart I'll give him that but he doesn't share his knowledge. He is lazy, arrogant, unprepared. This course was supposed be a field class we were supposed to go out and practice anthropology in the park what a lie. At the end he gives As so nobody complains smart!
overall good guy and okay class but it is a little confusing and he is all over the place, hard to follow when taking notes, loves brazi!!!
Great class. He knows alot about Brazil and he wants us to learn.
HE IS SO SCATTERBRAINED. Gives bad notes, if any. He loves Brazil and wants to make sure his students know. Books don't really help you, nor do his "study guides."
This class requires A LOT of reading. If you know you won't be able to keep up with reading 80-100 pages a week then don't take Professor Collin. He's a great conversationalist and enjoys his work. Only thing is he doesn't return papers on time, so throughout the semester you're kinda lost about where your grades stand.
Very tough! Even when you attend class regularly and take notes, the exams are very different and the review are pointless. This is a Intro class 101, its suppose to be easy and interesting but it totally the opposite. Save your GPA and don't take him. BIG REGRET!
He seems like a really nice guy just goes off on tangents that do not help the already confusing notes and lectures. Talk too much about Brazil instead worldwide anthro, there was a lot of reading, but I barely did it and got good grades
Unless you record his class and take note of "ACCORDING TO PROF" you will fail because he talks too fast when he says something that ACTUALLY matters. I took the 9am class and could not keep my eyes open to hear him talk about everything that did not show up on the test. 300 + students were studying off 1 students interpretation of the class so..
Not a lot of assignments. A lot of readings and movies to watch. Tests are based on lectures, readings and movies. Review sheet not helpful.
Won't be able to reach this professor outside of class. He exceeds his lecture because he rambles on about something that happened in his life. Exams are extremely difficult. Purchased 3 books that he barely referenced. Watched several long movies, that he said the exam would be on. Then the exams were all "according to prof." Review sheets CRAP
Had him for the Fall 2020 semester (100% online). Overall I have mixed feelings, but in the end, hes not bad. Hes not trying to fail you, but rather wants to challenge you, and will meet you halfway if you voice any concern. Don't take his class if you're looking to cruise. Lectures were complex but eye-opening. Goes overtime often. Tests were MC
I took this class last fall as a pre rec. His tests are extremely nit picky so if you don't take VERY detailed notes, you will not know a lot of the answers. He also gives a lot of reading. Overall, I would NOT recommend this class.
I do not understand why he has such a high rating. So full of himself and never answers questions asked in lectures properly, and was really rude. He did his own anthropology work in Brazil and it is all he talks about, even if it is not relevant to the lesson. DO NOT take him
This is a lecture course with 100+ students so participation isn't a big deal. We had to purchase three books he asked us to read but you can buy the used version for a cheap price. We also excluded some classes as a day to watch films so it won't be boring. Professor Collins knows what he is teaching and has a passion for it.
Dont even get me started on this prof. He is so rude when you ask a question and often dismisses it instead of answering. The exams were just awful. They asked questions about things he specifically said and god knows that remembering every single word he says is impossible. For lectures, he just goes way too fast to process and SO MUCH READING!!!
I loved this class even though it was hard and sometimes it felt like he was all over the place. But then it came together. He wants you to think like an anthropologist and he never makes it boring!
i dont know why he has high rating but professor John Collins is tough. No assignment but only exams your getting graded by. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR GPA HIGH. take my word for it
SAVE YOUR GPA & TIME !! ACTUALLY TERRIBLE WORST PROF AT QC !!
He is the most savage teacher I have ever seen.
This man is literally the worst teacher I ever had, hes so mean. Never wants to answer your questions and finds a problem with everything. He only speaks about himself. worst decision i ever made in my life. He triggers my anxiety.
You must listen to lectures to pass, but his lectures are difficult to follow along to. He jumps from example to example and it's hard to make out a single point he is making. He puts his personal stories as test questions. He answers questions with questions, encourages questions but then makes students feel dumb. worst teacher I've ever had.
He often publically embarrassed students for their questions. He would blame us for not understanding him. A lot of time was spent discussing his own life. He gave pop quizzes where we had to answer 2 questions and email him with 2 paragraphs in only 5 minutes. He allowed no excuses and would disregard any issues which were sometimes his fault
This professor is knowledgeable but he is just so full of himself omg. When you asks questions he disregards them or becomes rude. His exams are based on what he says. This whole class is just based off of his opinions. Its not worth it.
This professor is absolutely horrid not only has he publicly embarrassed me on multiple occasions in-front of my peers He has ridiculed me and made me feel inferior when all what was needed was a simple explanation wouldnt even recommended taking this professors course to worse enemy .
SAVE YOUR TIME AND GPA!!
The class is actually pretty is to get a good grade in as long as you do ALL the reading and pay some attention in class. Though I have to admit that paying attention in class is extremely hard as his topic is so all over the place and you never really know what he's talking about. He is also pretty rude but just do the reading and you'll be good.
Prof Collins cared enough to catch the cheaters who did nothing all semester, except cheat. He's a good teacher. He doesn't put up with garbage but will support you if you do the reading and try
Choosing this class was the worse. His lectures are tiring and he only talks about himself. The test questions are about himself and little details. He would pick on students and made them feel bad throughout the class. Rn a lot of people don't have a grade bc he is making meetings bc of cheating a problem but claims he has evidence of who did it.
Although I passed this class, he wasnt a good teacher at all. He was rude and mean to many students. All he wanted to do is talk about himself. And honestly I understood the frustration many people had with him. He basically made it seem like we were dumb and had it the easy way because it was an online class. I only learned when Nick taught.
All the tests are based according to him and he just talks about himself and Brazil. He doesn't take criticism well and was never prepared/was late
MUST pay attention during lectures. He does not record his lectures, so you must take good notes. If you do your work, I think you will be fine. If you cheat, he will catch you! In the other reviews, some mentioned pop-quizzes. There are no pop quizzes. The reason why the pop quizzes were given was that students were not reading.
Hes unorganized and only likes to talk about himself/ hes not even prepared for class and he even told us when he had a hang over
Get ready to read and you will become happy if you read for his class.
Do your work and he'll treat you fairly. I liked the lectures and he was available outside class
I don't know why so many people seem to not like him but he's actually one of my favorite teachers, if you don't like to read or at least aren't willing to, don't take his class because he assigns readings for every class and quizzes us on either the reading or the lecture, anyone who is willing to put in the work will like him vice versa.
Professor Collins got me interested in anthropology. He talks about power and race and sex and class with crazy different sides that I never thought about before. If you do the reading and go to lecture the in-class quizzes are easy and then we have no big multiple choice tests. I liked the last ethnography about hunters in Russia alot.
you just need to do two things with this guy. Read and go to lecture. he gives no multiple choice tests, only short writing assignments in lecture on the reading and what we're talking about. I liked it better than cramming for a big text and a final. His lectures are actually funny and interesting and he's easy to talk to if you need help
Professor Collins isn't too bad, he doesn't give us any midterms but take notes when he's talking and prepare for the upcoming quizzes. No multiple choices, just 2-3 sentences. His lessons are inappropriate and ridiculous at times. On most days, he's late for class and always assigns heavy readings. Be prepared if you're taking his class.
I like his way of teaching. He's funny and doesn't rely on multiple choice tests. In class he asks you questions about the readings or the lecture and these are his pop quizzes. He is a sort of quirky professor who loves anthropology and will take the time to help you out if you ask.
While this class does rely on the books most of the time, he does bring up really interesting stories in his lectures. He also announces quizzes randomly, but if you do the reading assigned they shouldn't be hard. If you're genuinely interested in anthropology, you'd enjoy the class.
There is no tests or midterms but he does give a lot of quizzes of the assigned reading your suppose to do, which you have to do to get a good grade on the quiz. His lectures are boring and just uninteresting, but sometimes he does say intresting stories, but overall is just a boring class.
do not take him
Decent professor, there are no exams, but the grades are calculated by quizzes based on the assigned reading.
Professor Collins is one of the best professors I have ever had! He is very knowledgeable and always adds interesting commentary on readings and ideas discussed in class. He has really inspired me in my academic career and always makes me think about things in a new way. There is a lot of reading but it is enjoyable. Participate and read!
Professor Collins brings a unique teaching style that really engages you in the material. While the reading load is heavy, his in-class discussions and quizzes make learning enjoyable. unstuckstudy was a game-changer for review prep.
Get ready to read like a lot you don't have any midterms or finals. Your grade is based on all of the quizzes that you take in class some of the quizzes are related to what story he said in class and he wants you to say key details that he has talked about. But most of the quizzes he will based them off of the reading and videos he will assign
Dr. Collin's anth 101 class inspired me to major in anthropology. He is the best.
