Collins is fair, the lectures are interesting, and he's quite witty. I recommend him to anybody
I'VE NEVER BEEN SO BORED IN MY LIFE. HE TALKS A LOT, BUT AT LEAST WHAT HE TALKS ABOUT APPEARS ON THE TESTS. HE REVIEWS THE TEST THE CLASS BEFORE. PLUS MAJORITY OF THE TEST IS ESSAY QUESTIONS, WHICH MAKES IT EASIER TO PASS.
Great teacher and a nice guy. Handouts are very helpful for the exams, and he takes the time to make sure everyone understands the material. Good lecturer and a funny guy.
Nice guy, very respectful. If you want to learn about philosophy, he's your guy. Funny, too.
Whoever said this guy was a great lecturer must be a freshman, besides being a ****; b/c his lectures have no point and he is stupid. Worst class in 3 years at ECU. BEWARE!
Whoever said Collins isn't easy is a dumbass. He gives you the exact notes to study for the tests; and gives you almost 10 points extra credit if you only miss less than 7 days. Doesn't get more easier than this people. Unless you are lazy.
This guy would be great teacher ... If his class was on Twin Earth! I will say this, things have gotten a lot better since he got rid of that f*** Goatee. What was up with that? I didn't sign up for a class with Dobie Gillis. But he is super-HOT!
A nice guy, funny, and I think the lectures are interesting. Don't take it if you don't like philosophy, of course.
You have to study. He also gives excellent study guides to prepare you for the test.
the people who are calling him a bad lecturer shouldn't have been taking a philosophy course. He makes philosophy clear to a person who's interested and actually does the assigned reading. this is the second course i've had him and been happy with both
smart guy, very fair. He's very prepared, and teaches a good class
Made me become a phil major. John is a great professor
good class, the guy is cool. Treats everyone with respect.
Very easy to understand, hands out study guides for every test and quiz and if you show up for class its an easy A. Nice guy, and if you end up having problems with his class, then your a slack ass or your just plain retarted.
Okay his lectures can be boring at times, but what class isn't. He gives out a study guide for every exam which comes directly from notes. Doesn't take attendance or teaches from book.
i' rather walk through the fire than walk in another one of his classes. very rude and disrespectful. and teaches like 10 minutes.
Very accessible and helpful, and explains things well. I had no idea what the course would be like but I found most of it interesting, and Collins knows what he is talking about. I recommend the class to my friends.
great guy. he takes this stuff seriously and expects you to as well. Knows a lot about philosophy, and he's pretty funny.
Gives out study guides for quizzes and exams. Go to class and pay attention if you want to do well. Overall, a good instructor.
Collins is my favorite teacher i've had at ECU since the past three years. Made me think about things differently. Some advice: participate in discussions-you'll learn more because u have to pay attention-and u'll realize how interesting it all really is!
Very boring class. I would rather go to the dentist than to his class.
Cool teacher. Gives SGs and corrects them for you before test. Very clear. If you visit his office - he will tell you everything on the test. Can be rude if you demand answers like a little prissy spoil brat who did not go to class- but who wouldn't slap you in the face?
great class and a great teacher. Good at explaining the philosophical issues, and takes the students' opinions seriously. He's a wonderful man.
Philosophy is terrible, and i don't think any teacher is good at teaching it. It is just so damn boring that it is hard to listen. The study guides help, but only if you understand the subject. I guess if i liked the subject, i would like him b/c others liked him, butI have a hard time with it.
Dr. Collins is a very good professor. He explains his expectations clearly at the beginning of the semester. Study Guides are given before each quiz and exam. He even takes the time to help you correct them in order to do well on the test. This professor really cares about his students.
He's a super guy, and a great prof. Very helpful with exam study guides, accessble outside of class. I liked Berkeley a lot.
This was a great class, and John's a great professor. You have to think hard and pay attention, but if you're interested in philosophy you'd like his classes. he has an interesting personality, too.
Probably one of the most boring professors of all time. HE constantly talks about the same thing over and over again. It is very possible that a depressed person may kill themselves in this class. I would rather have my finger nails pulled out then sit in his class!!!
Wonderful prof! A little boring sometimes, but not difficult! Gives study guides and opportunity to get complete answers to the questions on them before the test! Very helpful and as long and you do some work, you should make an A
If ur into philosophy i would recommend dr. collins. he's a great professor and you learn alot no matter what section of his u take. his tests are pretty straightforward though he is a tough grader on the papers.
John's very sweet, and he has a nice smile. He's also a good professor. He cares about the students and knows a lot about philosophy. I think most people in the higher level classes like him.
I think John would be a very interesting person to know, outside of class. He's a great teacher, and does what he can to help everybody. Talk to him in his office.
this class is so boring....All I want to do in there is sleep. Mr. Collins is a great teacher...Even though what he has to teach about sux. If you are planning to take phil. I recommend that you do take it with him because he makes a confusing subject easier to understand....But class cam be very boring just listening to him talk.
John seems more interested in the starry heavens above him than he is in the moral law within him. Shame!

John is awesome, his class is the best. The subject matter can be boring at times, but he is a great lecturer and if you go to class, you are guaranteed an A. His exams are essay and fill in the blank. hes a great prof.
He's a wise guy, but to be a wise guy you have to be wise. Smart, funny guy, and he's very helpful.
John is great! i've heard so many people say that philosophy is a hard subject, but i love it and John makes it much easier! he is a gentleman, kind, caring and a great teacher. TAKE HIM!!
Liked the teaching style and grading.
Nice Guy! Has funny examples to boring philosophical therories. Flexible grading scale. Just make sure you come to class everday (you get extra credit). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
He's a pretty good teacher! He uses funny examples so the topics won't seem so boring. He offers up to 25 points extra credit through attendance and pop quizzes, so I recommend you go to class. He does talk the entire time, so you rarely get out of class early. Buy the books, they are a big help! Take him, he's a good professor!
He's a funny guy. Attendance is taken at the beginning of class. It doesn't hurt you, it helps out a lot! His tests are short answers but they're fairly easy. Go to class because test answers come from his lectures. Great class.
funny guy, uses good examples. TAKE NOTES, and go to class, these will help you a lot. read the assignments-he gives pop quizzes that can add 25pts to your final grade!this class is difficult, but if you read the book, and ask questions you will do fine. meet with him in his office if you have to!! take him!
Great professor. Keeps you interested and explains the material thouroughly. He gives study guides before each exam and he will tell you if your answers are correct. Go to class and take notes and you will get no less than a B in this class. He also gives a lot of extra credit. Best professor to have for any philosophy class.
This man woke me from my dogmatic slumber. He is this century's David Hume minus the bad haircut.
I will "Kling on" to every word of wisdom.
Dr. Collins is a great professor, he helps you so much when it comes to the essay exams. He also offers a ton of extra credit. I recommend going to class everyday to get the notes, they aren't avaliable online and are different from the book.
If you have no interest in philosophy do not take this class. The only good thing was he gave study guides and let you know if your answers were right or not. Does not explain why they aren't. Isn't very helpful. He is confusing, and notes don't help that much.
Collins is a great prof. He's very nice and smart and cool. Also funny. And reasonable. He's the philosophy advisor and he's really helpful. Better than my advisor in psych was.
Good professor. I had no interest in philosophy until this class. There is hardly any work to do for this class, you just have to GO to class. His study guides are very helpful and I highly recommend him!
If you want to spend an hour and a half listening to a liberal f*ck talk about nonsense. Take this class. If you want to save your money and time, never take a philosophy class at ECU.
if you dont give care about philosophy i wouldnt reccomend this class. it is verrrry boring and easy to lose concentration. You HAVE to read in order to do well on the tests (which are in essay form) he is a very tough grader. I am coming out of this class knowing NOTHING about philosophy.
Easy going. Grades extremely fair. Includes random bonus questions on each test like "favorite food" "what's something you hate" etc. You will rarely need the book if you take detailed notes in class. He gives a study guide is what you will see on the test and loves giving his students good grades. I highly recommend him!
One of those classes that sounds hard but is really an easy a. There are only 3 exams and a final. He give you study guides and all the answers can easily be found in the book or from the notes in class. After each exam he gives you the answer key so you can use it for the final. Take this class just try not to fall asleep, the lectures get boring.
Very LONG. and boring class. Be prepared for a long nap when you come in. Goes onto long rants, lectures extremely boring, he NEVER lets you out early from class..despite tests being extremely similar to the study guide, he has very strong opinions, and therefore grades the tests in a biased manner. If you have the choice. Don't take him.
Yeah sure, he gives bonus points if you miss less than 5 classes, but his class is such a drag. He's so monotone and doesn't go into detail about topics he covers on exams. He'll ask you to elaborate in your own words but I'm sorry that's a little difficult when he hasn't given us much in the first place. Don't take him if you don't have to!
Dr. Collins is a great professor and will help you in any way possible! If you don't like philosophy then this class is not for you. I highly enjoyed it and plan on taking him again next semester. GO to class, do the readings, and study way in advance and you will do fine!
Dr. Collins is probably the best professor I ever had at ECU. He's interesting, cares about the subject, and is very helpful. He's also pretty funny. I'd highly recommend him for anyone.
He is a very funny guy. Took this class intending for it to count for my minor, now i dropped it and wish I didn't take this class. I'm a very bad test taker, and his tests are open ended questions. He gives you a study guide that is very similar to the test, but if you aren't a good test taker, BEWARE. 3 tests and a final which is your whole grade
LOVED Dr. Collins. Extremely nice guy, class was interesting enough. Easy A for a humanities credit.
Worst class ever. He makes what could be a fun class so boring. Tests are so hard and if you don't put down what he's looking for you don't get credit. He says he will help you with the study guide but if you ask for help he's very rude with his responses. My friend and I both had to drop the class after the first 2 tests.
I took his summer class and it was a great class. I learned a lot and if you put in the work, he'll give you a good grade. Email him your answers for the tests before hand and he'll give you great feedback. From what I've heard of other philosophy professors, he is one of the best so if you get a chance to take his class, I would take it.
Grades tough. Always do his study guides AND send them to him for feedback (trust me on this. Even if he corrects your study guide, he will keep in mind that you went above and beyond and sent it to him. This will make you one of his favorites. Also, come to class and participate. Do this and you will pass with a good grade.
DO NOT take this course. He is very friendly, which is a plus but his class is horribly boring and long. He only gives 4 tests (all essay) and attendance points for the entire semester so if you are not an exponential test taker, you will likely not do well in this course. Although it is similar to the studyguide he still grades your answers hard
One of my favorite classes at ECU!!! There are debates in class, but Collins actually listens to your points. Any response he gives is meant to make you think, not to belittle your opinion. DO THE STUDY GUIDES! They definitely help. There are about 5 pop quizzes which are really easy if you pay attention in class and they are purely extra credit.
He is very hard instructor ever had. I am clueless about what he teaches. He gives very hard tests. He says that he can post extra credit, but he lies. Needs to get retired. I pledge you not to take his class, very boring instructor. If you ask question, he clearly does not explain well. Not make student easy. Avoid this teacher. GPA LOW> C-
Just fill out the online study guides and you will get at least a B on the tests!
He is not a good teacher. He is philosophy instructor, but he is somehow act like a racist or don't believe in other religions. If you ask him any question, he acts rudely and crudely behavior. I am still passing his class (B+), but I don't feel like to stay. He sends questions and you have to do by own! Do not take him. take someone else. Please.
great professor. interesting discussions. paper heavy but it is considered a writing intensive class. mid-term and final both have a study guide
I think this man has a problem with the students who are educated in the other fields. He mainly focus on God. He only talks about the God. Very tough grader. No clear notes. check grammar; and I am not failing his class because I study day and night. But I assure you that take with other instructor who can take care of student. Good Luck.
He is a very friendly person, but unless you understand law terminology you're screwed. It doesn't matter if you write his notes word for word, you won't do better than a B on a test. I've never struggled in a class like I have this one. Very nice, very friendly, but he is one of the toughest grades I've ever seen.
Great teacher, gives pop quizzes for extra credit
I thought this class was super easy, just fill out the study guide and show up
I love Collins. I'm actually sitting in his class right now lol, he's super interesting and a cool guy. Super relaxed and explains every theory very thoroughly. Always gives you a smile if you make eye contact. I actually do not dread coming to this class.
Super nice guy, friendly, but so so boring! All lecture heavy, showed up to class, he would ramble, answer a few questions, then we would leave. People would get up and leave during the middle of class. Overall, easy class if you actually show up (he takes attendance EVERY class) but its not worth taking. Would also get off topic.
He is one of the worst professor in the history of my class. I am philosophy major, but this class screws me up because he is the hardest grade and checks grammar. If this class is elective, take other classes. Do not take this man. Worst professor in the history of philosophy. He does not speak kindly.
Amazing professor, I truly enjoyed enjoyed his class. He explains things very well and makes the material fun to learn. His lectures are very easy to understand and the I found the content to be interesting. He does not assign a lot of homework or tests. Exams are similar to the study guides and the readings are short.
I truly enjoyed this class, the material was interesting and professor Collins was great at explaining material. However what truly sets him apart from other college professors was his willingness to read and give great feedback on anything I sent him like questions, essays, and study guides. Go to class, and ask for feedback and youll do good.
John Collins is one of the best, if not the best, teacher/ prof that I have ever had. He makes difficult concepts easy to grasp and remember, he is nice and helpful. I highly recommend using the study guides he gives. The guides match up very well with the tests, and he is always willing to work with you if you need help.
John Collins is a great and understanding professor but O.M.G. the entire class is a lecture. It is so hard to process the information he talks about and the tests are extremely challenging...
Nice guy who really wants everyone to pass the class. The tests are a little difficult just make sure to do the study guides and the extra credit that is on the tests.
Dr. Collins was one of my favorite professors I've ever had. He cares about his students, gives great feedback, and tries his best to learn everyone's name. The class was tough but the tests were pretty straight forward if you read the textbook, the lecture notes on canvas, and the study guides. He gives a lot of opportunity for extra credit.
-Read outside of class -Essay questions on the exam (multiple choice is easier lol but the essay is worth a lot of pts) - MONOTONE lecture from the beginning to the end of class
Professor Collins was a good professor. He gives A LOT of extra credit. He truly cares about your grade and wants to help. Although, everyday he will lecture the whole time but he tries to make the lectures interesting. For every test, he gives a study guide. If you complete the study guide and send it to him before every test, he will go over it.
Professor Collins is nice, but his tests are super difficult. All the exams are on paper so make sure you STUDY!! There are multiple short answer questions on each exam. The class can be boring because he lectures the whole time. Most students watch tik tok, movies, football, etc during classes. He gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities!!
Dr. Collins is intelligent, kind, & funny. He truly cares abt the success of students. Participation could help or hurt ur grade, but he is understanding. The material can be dense but he explains it very well & provides examples & extra credit. Weekly quizzes that were helpful & fairly short exams. I highly recommend. Short but helpful readings.
A really good professor!!!
John Collins is an amazing professor and everyone should take a class with him. There are 3 exams throughout the semester with 10 quizzes (but these are easy if you know what's going on). He does take attendance, but if you show up you'll get bonus credit (he gives a lot of these). He gives study guides that you can send back to him for feedback.
