good lectures, interesting books
Pushes his oppinions in class, embarrasment to city in public
I mean, the guy's smart, but that is about it. Seemingly very unenthused.
Good class, makes you think
easy, just go to the ursu website and get the old tests. he uses the same ones.
Yay John!
He has many very interesting stories to tell.

Great teacher
Terrible field, unenthused prof.
too smart for his own good
unenthused, what? class was great until the final!
Great prof
Very boring class, but he is very smart.
Too much ego interferes with the material
His opinion is the only one that matters. Anyone else is wrong!
Most egocentric lunatic I have ever met ..should be fired!
clear and straight to the point when lecturing
He went on and on about eugenics and biological determinism
Soooooo bad! Egomania taken to the extreme!!
Way better lectures than other soc profs, interesting texts, horrendous mid-term
No Comments
he likes to hear himself talk
Just keeps talking without explaining. Egotistical all the way. terrible.
good class
Treats you like an adult
Conway's a good teacher. Very informative.
Most arrogant, pompous man at the UofR
No Comments
He really knows his stuff and can teach pretty well

AWESOME, intelligent, well spoken, and if he's egotistical, he's entitled!
convinced me to major
Great Prof, Extremely Smart and Fair

great prof
unclear and all over the place. BORING!!!
hated the class- boring... but have to admit he was a nice guy

first rate prof
Hypocritical and pompous
didn't like reading books on quebec, and john lose the denim shirts

Awesome Prof!! If u don't like him, your brain is stuck at a gr 2 thought level

Easy class. Whoever marked my final totally screwed me over though!
good prof, really knows his stuff

I can't believe he was able to relate every single topic to himself...EGO!
His opinion is right. Anyone else is wrong.

everyone loves a big man who knows what he's talking about.
He is all in all a good prof, the only thing is he is sometimes boring!
pretty good, i guess i'd recomend
very redundant-- a ton of reading!
Knows his stuff. You have a good idea what will be on the midterm and final.
Ok, can be entertaining at points.
tired to make the class interesting, although the material was BORING!!
fairly easy, takes an interest in his students, not alot of work but big final
Really good prof, pay attention and you can get a really good mark
Legend in his own mind. Tell him what he wants to hear.
I dropped that class like a ton of bricks. Fell asleep everyday, maybe it was those shirts. But he's a left-wing atheist so that's my kind of prof.
good prof. do your work, pay attention and you will do fine. makes it very clear what will be on midterm and final. check out old exams, pretty much same questions on exams
Useless, useless, useless. Narrow minded and unwilling to accept the views of others. Guess what, there's more than one side to a debate. What happened to University being a forum for public debate? If I wanted to get preached at, I'd go to church
The class isnt that difficult because he uses questions form past exams. The material is kind of boring, but he tries to make it somewhat interesting. He refers everything to personal stories. Your mark is in the hands of the TA's so its down to luck.
Terrible. Speaks way too fast and doesn't speak English. Very hard to understand. The seminars don't help at all and the TAs that do the marking really screw you over.
The Life and Times of John Conway 100. A lot of personal stories.
his tests are the best, look at the old ones because they are the same
Amazing, my idol, genius, unmatched, politically aware, cares about his students, he is the man!!
If your left wing youll love him, if right wing youll hate him.
I really enjoyed his stories. He teaches using stories and past experiences. I enjoyed attending his class and if you check out the old exams you will be fine.
very rude prof, doesnt make sense in his lectures, very very very very boring and monotonous.....just hated the class. never taking another sociology again!
Conway is a great prof. He uses old exams, so it is easy to study for tests. Good videos and good stories, I'd recommend him for soc 100!!
He is a fascinating man but his tests were really hard. Study your ass off.
His lectures are excellent, he can drone on a bit, but he's very intelligent. Don't take this class if you consider yourself 'right wing'...go take commerce or marketing or something. Tets are tough, study.
Beuler, Beuler, Beuler...? Yeah, he can get that boring. (Get it? The teacher from Ferris Beuler's Day Off. Ha ha)
not a bad class. very interesting. he is definately a VERY smart person, but his tests are tough. its hard to get a GREAT mark, but its possible to do OK
Willing 2 re-read tests if u dont feel graded fairly. kinda hard but a very intersting class, not boring at all !!!
Be prepaired to read, read, read...and then be specific on the midterm and final. The final is NOT easy, you best be on your toes!
Use old exams to study - you can't go wrong that way. Lectures are very interesting. You can do well in his class just work hard and you'll do fine.
very good prof!! his tests are easy... very interesting lectures!!! I would take another sociology class with him!
The problem I find with Conway is that you'll be taking lecture notes, then suddenly he'll jump into a 30-minute long story about his trip to the Bahamas (which somehow has some hidden reference to what hes talking about),its hard to know what to take down
zzzzzzzz
John Conway is a great prof, interesting and funny. His notes arent the greatest though. Go look for his exams and quizzes on ursu.uregina.ca and study with those, he doesn't change his exams and quizzes much (if at all)
he's a good guy, knows a lot about sociology, but his class is hard and the notes taken aren't clear. Look at the old exams, especially quizes. It's a hard class, study and expect to do ok, but not WELL
Very boring class. It also had a lot of reading and homework tobe done. You can tell he thinks he's better then everyone else.
Conway is an alright prof, but the class is normally really boring. Some of the info is interesting, and its obvious that he knows his stuff, but you can only learn it when you are awake! Tests are easy
Hard to take notes from at times. He talks about a lot, and jumps around a lot, and it's hard to know what you should be writing down. Reuses old tests. He uses books he wrote, which i didn't enjoy. He still has a sense of humour, and is a good prof overall.
conway is a decent teacher, but a man who knows too much about sociology and doesnt break the material down enough for first years. you have to do a fair amount of reading in this class but the tests are easy and you can print alomst identical old ones off the students union website.
lots of films, which is cool. gotta listen to the guy. and dont write down his life stories. just stick to the key points and you'll be sailin!
interesting and fairly funny prof. he is sometimes hard to follow in class and taking notes is not the easiest. tests are not too bad.
This was a good class. I liked Conway because he was funny and interesting to listen to. He uses old exams and just study the questions on those. I don't like his quizzes though, some are tough. Lab prof was a total idiot and wouldn't recommend her. Good class and informative!
Conway is a pompous individual who uses his own textbook for the class. He NEVER changes the material and a good mark is easy to achieve with the readily available old tests. Extreme left wing views will be pushed upon all students. Great disparity between TAs that mark tests and seminar content.
This guy is so boring. He likes to tell you about his life story. Bring a pillow to class.
His class is horrible! He never stays on topic and you can't follow what he's saying. Don't take his class unless you want to memorize the textbooks because that's the only way you will get a good mark.
I didn't like the class, but to be fair to him, i'm not at all interested in sociology, and i shouldn't have taken it. his lectures are hard to follow and impossible to take notes on. barely squeeked by, and i'm glad i'm done!
Dr. Conway is an absolute superstar! This is one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken, and one thing I like most about him is he makes you think. He never assumes the ignorance of his students by dummying things up, and I respect and appreciate this for it calls me to challenge myself. He
At the beginning it may seem interesting but it slowly becomes less and less clear. He is deffinitley hard to take notes from because he trails off and talks about things that have no relevance. I also think its ridiculous how he uses his own taxt book to teach the class
Ok, Do not take 100 level courses from him. You need back ground knowledge. We did a book that is 3rd yr. poly-sci in his class. Don't get me wrong he is a very smart man. But take a 200+ level course from him. His tests are hard. He may not teach the material until after the test is over. :S
He is a complete fraud! He writes sophomoric books that he knows the ignorant liberals will treat as the Bible.
Intelligent but boring, somewhat pompous but thats the breaks, he is tough to follow but if you know what your doing it helps for sure, trails off in lectures, also be prepared to buy at least 3 books, or 4 or 5, and of course one of those will be his own, weird
This prof is the worst i have ever had...he made no sense and expected way too much out of his students. THe texts were above the 100 level...not to mention that the book was about quebec. The entire class was about his views, and we were not given an opportunity to state our own views.
The material in the class was a little dry and boring some days, but over all Conway is a great prof. He takes the time to explain things if you need it and is very approachable. The only downside is he goes through the lectures quite fast, and if you don't like to take notes it's hard to keep up.
Good guy, Learned alot, even for a 200 level class I took as an elective, highly recommended but be prepared to work for your grade....mostly checkup style midterms, just to make sure you are doing the reading...its really all about the final
Lots of hard work, lots of reading! Interesting class and a very smart man. I learned a lot more than I thought I would and that is why they pay him the "big bucks"- a great prof
Good prof. I thought his class was great...I didn't like my seminar insructor, what a dough head. Conway is funny, but I don't like that he makes us read and reiterate his own book...about Quebec...blah!
class average on my midterm was 60. like w-t-f
nice guy? hmm... who talks about randomness.. his random stories!
ok class, but needs more interest. and the guy loves his rants. he is completely oblivious to anything he doesn't agree with and will fight you to the death on how much he hates Alberta. and seriously what's with the random lectures that have nothing to do with the class.
He is an alright prof. He does blab a lot, and at times he can blab so much you could fall asleep, litterally. He is pretty good though, have nothing really bad to say.
Good prof but lectures are very dry
Look on students union for the exams and qiuzzes they dont change. If you go to class he gives big hints about whats on the test. Easy class
When it's all said and done you realize you actually learned alot. Get quizzes off student's union, they're good practice. However, Conway's final was super long and everything was only worth like 1/4 mark...it took forever! He's a good guy though, super smart, and even makes you laugh now and again. Pretty good class, I'd recommend it.
Its not that the class was difficult its that his TA's marking is brutal, my friend and I pretty much wrote the same thing on one essay, he got 9, I got 6.5, real fair system you have here Conway. Brutal
i agree about the TAs. it's true; some mark easier than others, but that's true about any huge class with a seminar, it happened to me in psych, too.
Wow and they pay him to exercise his ego go figure
interesting, the TAs mark hard though but his tests are right from the past tests he gives, nothing changes. but he is a nice guy and fair
Very interesting! But beware of conways intrest in government politics. He likes to analyze the polls alot.
conway knows his****. tests are almost identical to previous years...be sure to study from the URSU exam database. the TAs are good too...take this damn class
Conway tends to go off topic and talk about unrelated things... however, take notes, do your readings, and study off the exam database, and you will do well. The seminars were awesome!
Very interesting and full of opinions. use the exam databse for sure!!
One one hand, tests were easy and in the exam registry, re-reads got you an extra 10% or so, and all the topics that you need to learn are in the syllabus and on the website. On the other hand, this guy is a terrible lecturer. Extremely dry and boring, super hard to go to class. He also makes you read his book - simply for the sake of buying it.
It was alright taking a class from this prof. The good: There aren't a lot of assignments, and his exam questions don't change much over the years so study using all of his old exams on the exam registry. The bad: He rambles a lot in lectures, he makes you buy his boring book, and you have to take a seminar.
Conway is very knowledgeable but sometimes he is a little hard to follow. Don't buy the textbooks! They are on reserve at the library for students to use. There is a lot of material covered but the seminars help to sort that stuff out.
Good prof, very interesting anf a class act..
Good man. On the negative side, I wonder about his education. The stuff he talks about is like, OLD. Some issues need updating. I liked his class though. I would totally take another one of his classes.
I really enjoyed taking his class. I do not agree with the others when they say his lectures are boring, however he does go off on tangents. study using his old tests from the online registry helps a lot.
Conway's awesome. He covers a lot of material in a short period of time, which is why some may think he rambles on. But ultimately, he has an interest provoking students to engage in a critical way of thinking. When he "rambles on", he's actually just excited about the subject. Take his course if you get the chance.
If I wanted to take a political science class, I probably would've enrolled in one. The West is a long, excruciating read and frankly does seem like a money grab... I really liked the topics covered in the text and wish he would've just stuck to them. Nice guy, but really that book has got to go!!
Conway is a great prof. His exams are very straight foreword (he tells you pretty much what is going to be on it). A good mark only requires showing up to class, paying attention, and reading the review at the end of each chapter. The only bad thing is that his lectures are only oral. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Seems like a good guy, but I do NOT like his style of teaching! He does go off on tangents! Trying to take notes in class is pointless cuz u can barely follow what he's talking about. Class average was 58%. Lectures are pointless, so you'll have to do a ton of reading to understand. I don't recommend his class at all!!
The class itself was boring (he is just to intelligent for my understanding haha). I rarely went to class and ended up with a 75%. Read the text, look at the exam registry and you will be FINE. He gives marks for no reason after the exams are given back.. really nice guy
The final is brutal, and the lectures barely mattered. I should have read the text more. Conway knows his stuff, but it's to the point that you can tell he's given the same lecture 10,000 times.

Warning: this class requires you read Conway's massive piece of garbage, "The West". Possibly the worst thing I've ever read. Utterly biased, dense and incredibly dull. Far closer to propaganda than an objective treatment of the material. I'm not sure if he actually calls Romanow the spawn of Satan, but he gets close.
Honestly, I showed up for 3 classes and finished with a 78. Read his hints on his website and study the stuff he tells you to. If you do that you'll pull off good marks easily. Also look at past exams on the student database, he likes to re-use questions. If you follow these steps there's no reason you shouldn't at least pull a 70.
OK, not a bad prof by any means, he goes off on tangents sometimes, but for the most part you will understand his main ideas. Only problem is all oral lectures so get a recorder or a laptop, no WEBCT. Also start reading his case study the minute you get it. NOT terribly tough but not extremely easy either. A solid Meh
Meh. Pretty boring. But the tests are pretty easy if you study and TAKE THE HINTS OFF THE INTERNET is the biggest thing. I managed to get a 90% on one of his tests. Just read the text book for sure, and take his hints.
Conways is not terrible. It's the TA's that are ridiculous. They mark like drill sargents. The amount of resubmitted exams was insane, and thank goodness Conway always increased the mark upon his own judgement. Class lectures were interesting though.
Conway loves his subject and has all aspects of the material down by heart. Class averages were very low (50%'s), but that's due to the T.A.'s hard marking. Conway will re-read tests and often change those marks. Class requires some critical thinking & textbook reading. I would reccommend this class, lectures were thought provoking.
I spent most of this class doodling in my notebook, or not even showing up, and I still managed to get good grades. The seminars sucked so badly. Tests were easy if you took the hints, a lot of reading outside class and a LOT of notetaking involved because it is all lecture with no aids.
NEVER take a class from him. His lectures were completely pointless, and you had no idea what to take notes on because his teaching was all over the place. Take the website hints, skim the texts, but don't even bother with the classes and you'll be fine. But yeah, the classes sucked HARD.
Decent prof. Knows the material well and cares. I got along with him good. Like everyone else on here said- take the hints off the web and in class lectures. Lectures suck- but a couple were pretty cool. He is an easy marker compared to interns, so get a re-read on tests. Final was easy- go to his office, he will give you more hints and shortcuts.
I really liked Conway he was funny and really new his stuff. Tests are easy as long as you read the hints. The seminars were good too.
Conway was very enjoyable. Not always clear during lectures, but if you're always there, it'll eventually make sense. No online component to the class. Marks are easy to get, but TAs can be strict. He will re-read if there is an issue. Text is a bit of a bore, not necessary to pass, but read it if you want 80+. Highly recommended.
Professor Conway was an awesome prof, he was also very funny when he wanted to be. Class is easy if you take notes in class and take his hints on his website. Lectures for the most part were boring, and the case study sucked; but overall it was a generally good class. I reccomend it.
Boring and hard to follow. Knows his stuff but doesn't care enough to make it interesting.. If it weren't for the seminar leader giving us the answers not many people would pass
Great class. He pratically gave you the midterm/final questions and the answers. No term paper, but a few essay questions on the midterm and final. Very interesting content, I actually liked going to this class. I would definitely recommend Conway.
Sociology of Mental Illness. This is the first time this class has been offered. I was very interested prior to taking it, but am currently almost failing and not from lack of trying, had to follow, very hard for a 200 class. Never take this class with him. If it is offered with someone else teaching go for it.
The class is like a puzzle. He throws puzzle pieces at you during class and then you have to try and put them all together for the midterm. Gives seemingly irrelevant info. Hard to follow. Theory class, yet has only one correct answer. 1/3 of class failed first midterm. 6 textbooks. Final worth 50%. I have a 3.7 GPA and am almost failing the class.
Conway is truly one of the old masters at the U of R. He has a wealth of experience in his area and uses it tell useful related stories. He will not give you the answers but he will give you the tools to come to the answers yourself, isn't that what university is about?
Great professor, had him for soc 100 as well. If you aren't a soc student his 299 class will be weird for you but if you are, you are in for a helluva class! SOOO good. SOOO interesting. I took it over a year ago and things that I learned in that auditorium still float through my mind on a daily basis. Great man, great prof, great class.
I don't know why people are saying this class is hard/boring. Dr. Conway is one the most intelligent people at the university. He puts everything you need (including midterm answers) online, and all your readings too. You pass just for trying to write the midterm. He also has many interesting stories. He also answers questions, but you need to ask!
Pretty good prof. Definitely knows his stuff. Reading was a bit excessive - 4 books for the class - but that is expected in a 400 level course. Gave midterm questions out in advance for you to prepare, which is nice. Speaks in a very monotone voice sometimes so can be hard to pay attention, but pay attention to the material, it's interesting!
