Professor Corbally is an incredible professor. I'm honestly not very interested in history(bio major), but his methods of teaching and knowledge made it one of the best classes Ive ever taken. He's hilarious, kind, and has an awesome Irish accent. He's extremely smart, TA'ed at StanfordBerkeley, and is a really cool guy. Absolutely take his class.
He is very unclear about dates assignments are due. Heavily relies on the books he assigns. You can go to class to listen to his lecture, but if you don't read the books you'll have a hard time.
He's awesome. His lectures are pretty interesting, but he doesn't write much on the board so get ready to take notes from him just talking. In order to pass the class, essay grades are essential. Get ready to read a lot. Overall he is a cool guy, and he's really approachable. Interesting lectures in his britishirish accent. Highly recommend
Corbally, a Brit Irishman, is opinionated but just and respectful, even humble. He truly cares about engaging with his students and for each to develop critical and comprehensive analysis of subject. Paper topics are vague but grading is fair and prof is approachable; homework mostly reading. History is not my strength, but Corbally is wonderful!
I am a dyslexic student who is also half blind. I informed Corbally on the first day of class, he advised I sit up at the front for easier visualization. Thought the semester he would always ask me if I was having any trouble, and give me a lot of advice, and tell me about a lot of resources I could take advantage of. He made sure to help me.
Dr. Corbally is a pretty good professor. He is very accommodating and will assist you if you ask him. His lectures are good, although opinionated. Reading is essential in his class, so get ready to read. Overall an incredibly helpful professor, would take him again.
Corbally's lectures are so interesting to listen to. He really brings a general TRUE perspective of history coming from every angle. The amount of reading and participation required to pass the class was my only concern, but I have to say I have learned more than I ever thought I could about the history of the United States.
The most fascinating history class you will take at DVC taught from a fan of history and not simply a scholar. If allowed to repeat course, I will be repeating in person. The online version is awesome, if you prefer it. The Cengage learning experience is incredibly advanced and the Western Sources book will have you reading more than required.

In my History of Western Civ. Class, he assigned 3 papers to take home as the only tests. It's super important that he thinks you're trying, because if he does, he'll move heaven and earth to make your class productive and educational. The papers are hard, but he's willing to work with you every step of the way. Dr. Corbally really is the epitome.
Really the best history teacher I've had until this point. Lectures chart the course of ideas and values throughout history, while still practically grounded in historical events. Articulate, thoroughly knowledgeable, showstopping lecture on imperialism. Moderates discussions well. Up to 10% extra credit, read the texts, don't be afraid to talk!
John Corbally is a wonderful teacher that you will never forget. More than interesting, he raised your awareness on the world and will probably have the most benefit impact on your way of studying history.
He is such a nice professor, and his class is even better! He truly cares so much about his subjects that he teaches and not only applies it to the past, but to the present as well. You will be engaged, pushed and interested in this course. His topics are interesting and his requirements are very clear cut from the first day.
Great professor but the most writing out of any course I've taken. Assigns two 4-6 page essays and an 8-10 page final (not on one subject, multiple questions/essay topics). Class participation is required, as well as an online discussion forum each week. If you're interested in history take this class, and if you don't mind writing take it anyway!
I have been at DVC for over two years, have taken countless History courses, and Dr. Corbally is certainly the most knowledgeable, insightful, and engaging professor I have encountered thus far.
Dr. Corbally was amazing and I highly recommend him to anyone wanting to take a class and actually learn. He knows his subject and enjoys what he does. If I have to take anymore history classes, it's going to be his classes. He does weekly online discussion posts, not too difficult. No tests. Overall an amazing professor and a pretty cool human
Professor Corbally is a real considerate human being before he is a teacher, which is something lost in today's world. He is understanding and helpful with students schedules and personal lives when sometimes life gets in the way of school. He understands the responsibility he has as a professor in control of students futures and is always fair.
Intelligent, interesting, and occasionally hilarious
His grading is fairly middle-of-the-road, so expect the usual workload plus a bit of writing. Not too much homework, however. His lectures are fun and informative, and he's willing to work with you in and out of the classroom. Recommended highly.
John Corbally is one of the most proficient professors I have experienced. His class is filled with a great informative lecture that really teaches you about the topic. His requirements from you at day one is straight forward. Most of your grade does come from your writing ability in two essays, an multiple short answer & two essay prompts final.
Mr. Corbally is one of the greats. He truly cares about helping his students succeed and he will help you out in any he can. If you can take his class and you won't be disappointed
Awesome professor. Show up to class He grades pretty easy. Only 2 essays, and the 2nd one is a revision of the first. There is some reading but its easy. Make sure you do the online discussions. He lowered my grade for not reading other discussions but let me make it. Turned in my final late, still graded it. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Corbally is an amazing professor who cares about his students and the subject he teaches. I like his teaching style, he explained history in a complex way which makes sense. Lectures and assignments are clear but if you have a questions,he will help you during his office hours. History was was my least favorite subject, until I took his class.
I took history 140 and 141 with him and they were both amazing. Great lectures with quality content and he is passionate about the subjects which makes it much easier to listen. In fact, he inspired me to minor in history. He connects the history to present events and gives great context. I would highly recommend him and all of his classes.
Dr. Corbally loves what he does, and it shows because he is truly dedicated to his students. He is involved in online discussions and takes the time to give feedback. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable on the subject of history, but he is also inspiring and taught me to look at the world from different perspectives. A thought-provoking & fun class.
Great guy overall (despite being from Ireland), great professor as well. Really cares about what he does, and care about his students as well. Not only are his classes informative, but also entertaining. If you work with him, he will work with you.
Great guy. Witty, smart, and to the point. This is a teacher who's worth waking up early for. You're only graded on 2 papers and the second one is a revision of the first and you can pick your topic. His lectures are great and you'll watch several cool videos. I will definitely sign up for him again!
Took his history 140 online. No tests but we did have quizzes. Have to read the book if you want to do well on the quiz. We also had weekly post discussions. He gives great feedback on your essay. The two optional extra credit that he gives requires you to read two books and write an essay about it, worth doing if you need the grade.
This guy is really just an overall great teacher. He is fair, friendly and helpful. His class is one of the most thought-provoking I have ever taken. He really taught me how to critically think at a much higher level not just about history but every aspect of my life. The main grade was only 1 paper which we revised for the final.
Very caring professor who is always willing to speak with students outside of class about grades and questions you have about history. Online work is mandatory and weekly, the textbook is used heavily. Expect a lot of source work and interaction with other students.
Great professor! This class is straightforward, and if you have any trouble, Dr. Corbally can help. He responds quickly and is always willing to help out. Do the work and you'll get a good grade. I took the online, late-start class which was quick but not difficult as long as I kept up with the work. I hate European history, but loved this class!
Corbally is one of those teachers who inspire one to think outside the box. His lectures consist of a combination of Questions, Discussions, and mostly lecturing. His lectures are meaningful and require an open-mind set; some group work within class will take place concerning primary sources, which are greatly emphasized. He is truly passionate.
Great class if you have a lot of white guilt and want to be stuck for 18 weeks learning the same thing - that Europeans and Christians are responsible for a lot of really negative points of view people have nowadays. I took this class to learn something I didn't know? Whoops. Great textbook, though. Read that to get straight facts.
I don't know about all that "white guilt" stuff; my experience with this class has been positive - good discussions even online, with people sharing their personal perspectives on historical issues. Easy to connect history with modern day stuff, good guidelines for online discussions. Participate, speak up and keep up, and you'll do just fine.
Brilliant professor! Funny, witty, sarcastic, fair, and understanding. Every history class I have taken prior to his class has been terribly boring, but Corbally makes the subject interesting, keeps class engaged, and makes sure you understand the connections between the past and present. Great class, would definitely recommend him.
He is a great teacher, a fair grader, and is always willing to give individual help. To be clear: it's an academically challenging class in terms of work load and intellectual thinking, but it's worth it. Why pay money to go to college if you don't want to be stimulated with new ideas, opinions, and information? Take his class! You won't regret it
Corbally is a highly respected professor. His courses are very difficult, but it is completely worth it. If you're allergic to critical thinking, analysis, and having your beliefs challenged, don't take the class (or maybe do because perhaps you need to learn). Great lectures, hilarious, and tough grader (but gives great feedback). Loved his class.
Corbally's probably one of the better professors I've had during my time in community college. His workload may seem monotonous at times but in reality, I really learned a lot and I do not regret taking his class. He's a quality person overall as well as a professor. Take his class, no regrets whatsoever.
It's true that Corbally is a tough grader, but with that said his grading is more along the lines of what I would have expected from a college course. The information presented is very interesting, he is clearly very passionate, and I think he truly wants his students to succeed and grow in his courses. History majors will really love him.
Corbally is tough, but only as tough as you would expect from a college level course. He enjoys philosophical arguments and essays that include a lot of philosophical debate will typically receive better grades. He's a great guy, funny, and absolutely brilliant. He pays attention to every student and wants them all to succeed.
nothing but great things to say about this professor. class is graded by two papers, online discussions weekly, one page papers every week, and class participation and final. lecture heavy but he makes them interesting. do your best work on your assignments because you're only graded on a few things. overall great teacher, don't expect easy A
Professor Corbally is not only a great teacher, but a great guy overall. His class is lecture heavy, but he always managed to keep us entertained. He is all about communication so if anything comes up and you can't attend class, he is super fair. Loved this class and i'm glad to end my career at DVC having had him as a professor!
Corbally teaching format for online hist-141 is very interactive and forces you to think critically and philosophically about the subject matter and implement your thoughts into a forum like discussion. This class is very fun and easy if you're willing to think abstractly about the historical concepts at hand. Reading the text is a must.
Professor Corbally is incredibly caring and supportive. He is a teacher that wants to help his students see the value of history. His work can be rather abstract, but he will help you, especially if you see him during his office hours. He advises the History Club which can also help you learn more history and other things. Definitely take him.
Definitely the best history Professor I've ever had. He lectures from many sides and doesn't push his opinions at all. He is extremely knowledgeable and extremely nice, which is a great combination for an entry level history class. His joy and passion for history are both super obvious, which makes learning from him that much easier. He's awesome.
Professor Corbally is a great professor. He does a great job of taking historical events from hundreds or thousands of years ago and showing how they relate to our modern world. Not to mention that he is also funny and approachable. He is an eye-opening and informative professor!
I very much enjoyed the class and learned a lot.
Dr. Corbally is fantastic. Very nice, knowledgeable, and encouraging in class. He's somewhat of a tough grader, but respects a well made argument. All the books are required and you need to read them. The things I didn't like are the short notice you get for essays and 20% of the grade being attendance. 20%. Annotate the book early for the essays.
Highly recommend taking this course with Professor Corbally. Very respectable and inspiring man. Professor Corbally is easily one of the smartest individuals I have ever met. Not an easy A but very rewardable. I really enjoyed the class and note that online participation is just as important as in class.
Dr. Corbally is one of the best teachers at DVC, easily. You learn a lot and he does his best to remain unbiased. He's very passionate about teaching and having you involved and there are a lot of little and big writing assignments. Read the textbook, it's mandatory. If you ace the first essay the second is extra credit. He also taught at Stanford.
Here are some things I might add. Attendance is important. The work load is manageable Every week there is a summary of chapter reading due and discussion due on canvas. The professor likes it when students present opposing ideas. This causes debate which is where I learned the most. Despite, me not saying anything. Overall, I did enjoy the class
Dr. Corbally is great. He makes history enjoyable and interesting. His lectures are engaging and he is pretty funny. He is also very good at relating things to current events and staying impartial. I miss having him as one of my professors. If you get a 90 or higher on the first paper you wont have to write the midterm. Would recommend
Dr. Corbally is an amazing lecturer and professor! He truly cares for his students and tries his best to make the class relevant to whats happening in the world today.
Prof. Corbally is an amazing teacher. He's super easy to reach when you have a question (I took his online course for Summer 2018). He responds to emails very quickly and his final was not hard, just rather long. 6 short response answers and 2 essays at the end.
I took Prof. Corbally's history course over the summer online. While it was homework heavy, it was expected being that it was a short-term class. Prof. Corbally cleared laid out his expectations and assignments. The course was easy to follow. He gave good feedback and was encouraging throughout the course.
His class is boring; the online course makes it worse. He doesn't grade anything else other than discussion (weekly discussion), all the other assignments(including long formal essays) are ALL graded automatically by the computer, and the homework is all on the online textbook, IT IS SO TOUGH. He doesn't do anything, isn't caring AT ALL, arrogant.
Definitely best history teacher ever and I dont enjoy history usually. Hes fair and really wants students to succeed. Theres online work and home work to hand in once a week.
Professor Corbally is one of the best professors I've ever had. His class was literally the easiest class I've ever had at DVC. He's very clear right from the beginning about what he expects. Just simply do the work and you'll easily pass. Definitely would recommend and take another class of his again.
Took the 142 contemporary European History in Fall 2018. He really pushes every student to read as much as possible and discusses history from different perspectives. Interesting primary readings and in-class film. A lot of writings, but they will become easy as you learn more in class; chance to replace your first essay with a better one as well.
Part 1 Professor John Corbally, Ph.D. was honestly one of the most challenging professors I have had the pleasure of taking at DVC, but that being said he is by far one of the best DVC has to offer. If you are interested in learning history and are preparing to move forward to higher levels of education, I would highly recommend taking his class.
Part 2 What made this class standout over the others is that he teaches history with a critical eye. If you are not into critical thinking and would prefer to regurgitate information and memorize historical dates (and a ton of random garbage), this is not the class for you.
Part 4 FINAL NOTES: The final is take-home, the essays are demanding, the source readings are incredible, you will learn something about history and critical thinking (which is essential for school and life in general).
Mr. Corbally prepares you for life. He asks you to dig deeper than what you've been taught in grade-school and look at the bigger narrative of history. If you don't like reading, then you'll say his class is hard. But if you're not lazy and can keep up with readings, his class is actually a breeze. I hardly showed up, but I kept up with readings.
16 weeks crammed into 4 was tough, but doable. The reading was extremely heavy but it can be done by putting in the time and effort. Corbally's class isn't hard at all, there was one essay which is apart of the final, a few discussion posts, and a few primary source analysis. He really prepares you for life and beyond. Great motivator! I recommend
I took this class over the winter. There was a lot of reading involved, that's probably because it was only a 4 week class. Prof. Corbally is a fair grader, easy instructions to follow, just do the work and you will do good in his class.
Great teacher! You will learn a lot from this teacher. It is a little bit of work but it really doable as long as you keep working regularly. The lectures are really great too. The teacher is really nice and really care.
I took Dr. Corbally's online history class and it was difficult but not overly hard. The thing that makes me hate his class is there is an essay or chapter analysis due almost every Sunday night at midnight. Most of us have classes Monday morning but I never get enough sleep because I am always up doing his assignments Sunday night.
Has a very intersectional course material for a history class making everyone feel respected for their ethnicity/gender/sexuality. some things about his teaching method I didn't care for. IF you got an A on the first paper then you don't have to write another one, which doesn't really make sense if you think about it. Shames students occasionally.
I have taken this professor 2 times, and I have thoroughly enjoyed both times. This class is by no means an easy, but it is very interesting and do well as long as you stay on task and participate.
Great professor and easy to access in office hours. Highly recommend meeting him at some point! His online takes a lot of work but if you just do what you need to do each week you wont fall behind. 2 essays, if you get above 90 on the first you dont have to do the second. Final is open book and submitted to turn it in. Great class!
Dr. Corbally's class was vastly informative. At first the class feels overwhelming but after a few weeks it is not bad at all. Although it is time consuming, as long as you do the reading, discussion posts, and summary/analysis assignments, you will pass. He is funny and caring. I recommend taking his class.
Took Corbally for Hist 141, 180, 181, and possibly 142 this spring. Really good Prof, each week you read the chapter come to class and he lectures and the next class you break into groups and do some in class work. Some short online work due weekly too. Two essays, but if you do well enough on the first essay you dont do the second. Good class.
I've taken Prof. Corbally's online classes for both 140 and 141. You are expected to write a discussion every week and have to submit two essays (the second is optional if you get an A on the first). Final exam was about a bunch of short-response essays. He assigns interesting history books that explore the consequences of history events.
Took his online History 121 class over winter break. Would definitely recommend. Dr. Corbally is clear on his expectations and makes it very possible to get an A. Not hard & workload was totally reasonable for a 4 week class. He delves deeper into history than just the series of events & analyzes their meaning. His book is also very interesting!
I took his Hist 140/141 classes online and I can honestly say they were some of the hardest classes I've taken. (My fault for taking 2 online classes). The work load is heavy but with that being said professor Corbally is clear on what he expects for every assignment. We had to write 2 essays along with weekly discussions.
I took Professor Corbally's class in Spring 2019, and I must say that Professor Corbally is the best instructor that I have had in all my community college experience. His course work prepares you for the UC level, and for life. I highly recommend taking all of the courses he teaches. He is very caring and wants to help his students succeed.
Professor Corbally is an exceptional teacher who truly cares about the well-being of his students. Sadly, I had to drop his class at the very end of the semester due to reasons related to COVID-19. His assignments are heavy on the reading, but he gives a fair amount of time to get the work done and always provides detailed and helpful feedback.
All his assignments require a good amount of reading, so if you're looking for an easy class to fill credits this ain't it chief. Many of his assignments require essay length responses for very little points. The final consisted was short answer and essay. Short answer was 10 Q's 2-3 paragraphs per response and as much necessary for essay questions
I absolutely loved professor John Corbally Hist 141 class. At first, I thought It would be hard to pass his class but he is very fair person he will give you extra credit assignment to get better grade. I definitely recommend to take his class.
Dr. Corbally is clearly passionate about history. His course was incredibly well-organized, with assignments published well in advance, a grading structure that is easy to understand, and timely grading of assignments. Expectations were clear and fair, and you are given every opportunity to earn the grade you want - you just have to work for it.
Dr. Corbally is very detailed and his class was well structured. I took this course in Summer 2020. It was very heavy on the reading and be prepared to write a lot! You will also learn a lot too! I can tell Mr. Corbally is super passionate about history. He really cares about the student.
Professor Corbally assigns a lot of writing assignments, BUT you can get away with writing just about anything that's remotely relevant b.c. he doesn't read them in great detail. He doesn't respond to emails timely or relevantly. His personal works of literature suck to read, but the other assigned book, Sources of Western Tradition was a gem.
Professor Corbally is a great teacher! If you follow instructions and turn assignments in on time, you will be fine. Also, he responds very quick to emails. Would definitely recommend!
There have been many Professors that I have had the pleasure of learning from- but learning in Professor Corbally's class was top-tier education status, in my opinion. 10/10 recommend. :D Take his class you won't regret it.
Although the assignments were pretty hefty, they were far and few between so you have a ton of time to complete them. Go to office hours!!!! You will get amazing feedback and additional help that will really help you outside of his class. My only wish for this class would be for a recorded or live lecture since were online.
A lot of reading involved in this course, but he was very helpful outside of class and easy to reach. Presented exactly what he was looking for at the start of the term. I took this as a summer course and though it was a lot of work, it was very doable in the 6 weeks to complete and do well in.
Professor Corbally was a great history professor. He clearly is very knowledgeable about the subject of European history while also being patient about those who may be less informed. He helped me write papers better and even recommended me books after the semester. This class is great if you want to learn about the subject and enjoy writing.
Corbally is awesome. I took Contemp. Euro. History online b/c of COVID, wish I could take his class in person. He is incredibly passionate about teaching & wants us to analyze all aspects of history, including how we gather information & how it relates to today. Easy A if you do the weekly chapter summaries. One 2000-word paper. go to office hrs!!
I have never met a more pretentious professor in my life. Everything he sends reeks of "I'm the smartest person I know" and that gets very old very fast. He grades essays based on length, not content. He also doesn't do any recorded lectures, everything is taught from his textbook. Overall, his class was the worst history class I have taken at DVC
As someone with an extremely heavy course load, this class was interesting in that it did require a decent amount of time and attention, but was not as difficult as it seems. The assignments and reading might seem daunting at first, but it's actually quite straightforward. I've only emailed the professor, but he is understanding if things come up.
I personally cant judge on his character because Ive only sent him 1 email at the beginning of the semester. Class is boring, he posts things in hidden areas around his page with only the writing assignments ever on my canvas to-do list.$80 for his hw app and will post 1-2 chapters weekly without telling you if its 1+ chapters. No communication
He assigns just way too many things. There's an essay due, 3 chapters of work due, a discussion, just way too much work. He expects us to spend 9 hours on this class weekly, yet doesn't lecture and teaches out of mindtap. Not learning anything important, and him claiming to teach history to "change lives" is the biggest lie I've heard.
I took him during winter sessions 2020, and I have nothing bad to say. I mentally had to prepare myself for a class that is mainly reading and writing all the time especially for a 4 week semester. I recommend taking it during winter or summer to get it over with. He gives harsh feedback but it never hurt my feelings. Awesome guy.
Agreeing with what others have been saying about assignments not being posted clearly, this course is a weekly scavenger hunt. Something is due today and in a class of about 30 students, only about 3 people have participated in the discussion. What does that say about accessibility? I just WISH there was more communication from him. Seriously.
Great professor who is really generous, especially with online class. The class is easy, but if you care about history and you're not just taking it for the grade you can still go to office hours and talk to him. He's passionate about history
Others have complained about the reading and lack of lectures, however, I think that's an unfair assessment because fundamentally reading is a central part of a history course, and hour-long lectures every week would probably go unwatched. So ultimately this class is what you make of it; do the reading and you'll learn, work hard and an A is yours.
All the negative review I've read seem well... false. Dr. Corbally is exceptional. I had a few shortcomings as a student, and after I explained to him my circumstances he was ready to help. Every single time. He will understand you if you communicate with him. He is passionate about history, and as a student I wish I had his class in person.
Professor Corbally is easily one of the best history professors at DVC. Most assignments are short writing assignments based on the course readings. There is a mid term paper and final paper, all of which are super doable with a little time and effort. He is easily reachable and grades very fairly. You won't regret signing up for his courses.
if your looking for an easy A plus learning a lot of history just by reading , then Corbally is the man. even the homework you can finish them easily in 10 min . i promise you you will learn a lot plus you won't have to be stressful about not having enough time for your other classes because this professor is really considerate. 100% loved it
Professor Corbally is a fantastic professor. His assignments can be difficult, but he is clear in his requirements and is more than willing to support students as long as you reach out to him. Had him for several classes and all of them have been some of my favorites!
Corbally is all about communication, you have to be willing to put in some effort but if you have any questions he is always there to answer! He is incredibly helpful and caring always willing to work with you. Super fun class if you enjoy reading and analysis!!! Highly recommend:)
The textbooks and secondary readings are all enriching. Put in effort toward satisfying the prompts and you'll do well. My B was a result of my own mistakes not the prof. Feedback isn't detailed and he's not too closely involved w/ discussions but the textbook is 300 pages of his historical input. You can't like history and not like his material.
Professor John Corbally is a fantastic history teacher. Yet, that doesn't mean he is for everyone. He is not an easy A, he is a teacher who is not afraid to assign a lot of homework. You will NOT succeed if you DON'T put the work in. Other than that, he is fantastic in and out of class, and genuinely cares about your interest/career in history.
Hist180 with Professor Corbally was a fun and somewhat difficult class. There will be lots of homework, a decent sized essay, and a final. They are based on your reading and understanding of the texts provided. In and outside of class, Professor Corbally cares about his students if they put the work in. He might not be an easy A, but it's worth it.
The course is mainly reading and writing, and everything you learn will be interesting since the class covers relevant issues. The syllabus makes the course appear intimidating, but so long as your read a little bit every day and interact with the material you will succeed without much difficulty. He's also good at checking emails if you need help.
I really liked Dr. Corbally as a teacher, and would highly recommend him. I took his HIST-140 class online (because of COVID-19). I met him a few times in office hours and he was a great at explaining topics. The only downside to this class was that he did not post any lectures videos. I really wish that I would have taken Dr. Corbally in person.
Great professor! Very thorough and even if you don't get the flow of things, if you check your grades after a few assignments, you will soon get a good understanding of what he expects. Very understanding but he does expect good work. Reading heavy class and answering questions requires actual thinking and not just copy-paste answers from the book.
There will be three books required for purchase, two of which are written by him. Assignments will say, "write 1-6, 2-6 or 3-6 paragraphs," but he will knock a lot of points down due to length and if you aren't descriptive enough. This course made me loathe history. I don't recommend taking it in the summer with another history course.
Professor Corbally is kind, understanding and patient. He's organized, intelligent and cares about his students. He also got to my emails promptly. Not many Professors are as on the ball as he is. I highly recommend him!
I took this class in the summer in conjunction with another history class (different professor) and this was one of the worst history class I had the displeasure of taking. I didnt complete one written assignment, and thats completely on me. Theres nothing spectacular about his teaching style but I did enjoy reading the material (three books).
Professor Corbally's philosophy on the subject of History and its functions are inspiring. As is the case with any history course, and I believe reflective of the field at large, there is fair amount of reading and analysis involved. However, the texts complement each other beautifully, and culminate into a clear and cohesive lesson.
With any history course, there will be reading in professor Corbally's class. Yet, the reading and assignments that he provides take on a new version of learning and have a student apply the knowledge they just learned into analytical papers. Since, we were online, one had to reach out to meet with him, but if you did, he was very helpful!
WARNING: If you need/want an A, this class is TOUGH. Corbally is a great instructor who provides clear, detailed (critical) feedback on all your work, but lots of reading, writing, and analysis weekly, as each book progressively gets harder. Also, do discussion posts to boost your grade. Great class and books, but lots of work (for 3 units).
Took Professor Corbally's 140, 141, 180, 181 during the pandemic. You have weekly chapter summary, discussion, a 1500 word essay, and a final that opens 2 weeks before the last day. Professor Corbally is well-educated and requires you to really learn. Must take if u r a history major. Stay away if u just want easy credit. I learned a lot!
This class was TOUGH. I probably put as much work into it to get an A as the other 3 classes I took this past semester combined. That said, it was definitely quite interesting, and I felt like I got a lot out of it as far as quality work and learned material goes. Maybe not the choice if you just need the credits and this seems vaguely interesting.
Dr. Corbally in my opinion is not only a clear but well rounded professor. This is my second class I've taken of his, my first being Hist-142 and as of now enrolled in two spring classes for Hist-180 & 181. As long as you read the material, make an effort to understand it, put in the work and ask questions when needed you'll for sure pass.
Absolute great professor, truly cares about the students and learning. If you have the opportunity take his class! Does not assign a crazy amount of work but the perfect amount.
This class was definitely work, but if you're willing to do it, it's a great pay off. He assigns a good amount of homework but he's not a super tough grader, allowing you to really absorb what you're learning without the stress of passing. I would definitely recommend taking his class, especially if you're a history major.
If you are looking for a quality class in which you learn something, I would absolutely recommend it. However, your participation does matter. Mandatory reading and essays every week. If you are planning to take a lot of hard courses in the semester, I would stay clear. But if you aren't, I would choose this class 100%.
LOTS of reading and writing. If you are just looking for a class to fill up your schedule... maybe avoid him. I had no problems with him though, except for his grading was at times a bit vague and unexplained. I did take him in a late-start (1/2 length) class so that scrunched up the reading & writing a lot. Still manageable, by no means easy.
Don't listen to people complaining about the course-load, your going to be fine. All the answers to his short essay questions can be easily found in the books. Just do a little bit of reading, don't write like a first grader, turn work in on time, and you will get an A. Very enjoyable class if you just meet Corbally halfway and put in some effort.
Amazing professor
One of the best professor at DVC. It may look a lot of work in the beginning but it's easy. He knows what he is talking about and his books are amazing. Highly recommend if you wanna know about history.
The initial workload and emails may scare you at first, but Professor Corbally wants you to pass. If you don't the work, he can't help you, but the reading and writing won't be hard if you just split it up. I would not recommend him for filling up a schedule, as it can be time taking. However, Corbally is the professor to take if you want to learn.
Super kind professor who seems intimidating first. However he's very kind and the class is really easy. Just make sure u do the reading and follow the guidelines.
Professor Corbally is super passionate about teaching world history. He is not discriminate towards any political view points although he will remind the class of his own. He teaches history without bias and helps those who have no historical knowledge through the class.
More writing than I've done in any other class but also the most I've ever learned in a single class.
I liked doing his Inquisitive homework since its 50% of your grade and if you keep trying, you can EASILY get 100% on it & secure half of your grade. The research paper is worth 15% but he was lenient on it if you genuinely try. Overall as long as you try you'll get an A/B easily. Two hw's due each week, split it up and it's manageable. I recommend
Do not take this class as a GE. The class is easy but a lot of work. There are two essays and a decent amount of multiple-choice homework due every week. Professor Corbally uses seemingly arbitrary grading criteria and leaves generic comments on essays he does not give 100%.
Professor Corbally was a great professor to have. It's a bit textbook heavy, but relatively easy if you do the work. Usually, he'll have you write short essays or discussions based on the reading that doesn't take too much. He's also great at communication outside of class. Would recommend!
Prof. Corbally is a great professor that makes the class really easy to understand. Assignments are posted and he even sends out reminders for the first couple of weeks to make sure that everyone is on track. During the summer semester it is a little bit difficult to stay up to date with assignments but with enough determination it is not hard.
I'd strongly recommend taking any course from Professor Corbally. There's a lot of reading, and one does need to have good writing skills for the reading. But he's always there to help whenever I was perplexed or didn't know how to get a good score. He's super patient! He also offers extra credit, which are quite easy to earn. Take his class!
Prof. Corbally is a fair grader if you do the reading and gives good constructive criticism to work. I'd recommend him to any prospective history major or anyone who wants to take a history class for general Ed.
This was by far the worst class I have ever taken. He commented negatively on my appearance and made out-of-pocket comments to several students in class. You'll write multiple essays every week. The final paper was 26+ paragraphs however he never gave full credit for doing the minimum. You'll spend hours a week on this class alone. Do not take him.
Dr. Corbally is a very caring and understanding instructor. He goes above and beyond to encourage and help students succeed in his classes. Although the class is textbook and writing heavy, he does not discriminate against his students for how they look and truly cares. He wants all students to pass. If you ask for help he will make it happen.
Lots of reading and a fair bit of writing, but truly worth it. Great feedback that he is willing and able to expand on if asked. He accommodates students who put in the effort and ask for help. Just stay up to date on the HW, individual HW assignments don't show up on canvas so just keep track of that and you're golden.
Professor Corbally's HIST140 class is a solid choice, though it requires dedication. The workload is manageable with the right approach - stay on top of readings, essays, and utilize resources like Unstuck AI to complement your studies. Overall, an engaging course that rewards engaged students.
the workload is insane. assigns chapter readings from two different textbooks every week, then asks for 4 page papers detailing what you read. his canvas page is also extremely unorganized, some assignments i didn't know were due until only days before their due date because i couldnt find them online. simply put, too much work for one online class
Tons of work and lots of writing, but as long as you follow the instructions and write at a college level you'll get a good grade. Doesn't give a lot of feedback. If you don't like writing basically an essay a week don't take his class, but if you can do it he's pretty good.
History was never in my interest however, Professor Corbally did not fail to make the class captivating. I took his class as a GED. The workload is quite heavy; however, it isn't tough. They are just summarizing what you've read, and he's mostly about quantity over quality. But the material is fascinating, and Corbally is a funny guy.
This history class was fascinating, and Professor Corbally is a helpful professor, but the class load is a lot. There were quite a few online assignments I forgot to turn In because there is no due date for them on Canvas. There's a lot of reading and writing as well. If you can handle a lot of reading and writing, you'll do great.
He's a great professor; I love his lecturing style, but get ready to read and write. There are writings every week, but it's helpful.
I've taken Dr. Corbally for Hist 180 & 181, he kinda has dry humor (I found it funny personally) Both classes have lots of reading & writing but its manageable, his lectures were hard to follow at times & his penmanship is kinda bad (sorry prof.) 180: Online, no lecture, inquisitive, & reading 181: In person, lecture, & writing essays
Took his accelerated class. Classwork is doable if you put in the work but Canvas page was confusing at first, but got the hang of it eventually. You have to stay on time with everything and buy his book and the inquisitive as he doesn't accept late work. Strict but told us what we needed to do since the start of the semester. Very communicative.
Took accelerated course. Lots of reading and writing, but extremely doable. Professor wants you to succeed. Interesting information. I was burned out towards the end (various factors) and failed to turn in a few assignments, putting my grade at 89%. He kindly gave me extra points for an uncompleted assignment to bring my grade up to an A-.
Professor Corbally is truly the best history teacher I've ever had. His teaching style is both engaging and inspiring, making even the most complex historical topics accessible and thought-provoking.His guidance has had a profound impact on how I view the world, fostering a balanced and informed perspective.
He does not give good feedback. The entirety of the year I received the same comment on every assignment. It was obvious he did not care about the class since it was online. He seems like he would be fun in person, but this was one of the most bare bones online classes I have taken. bad feedback and lazy assignments no actual teaching
He makes his own book a requirement, I think its a big time conflict of interest! Can't pass his class without buying his book.
Amazing professor! He's an absolute gem of a teacher, super relatable and genuinely invested in his students' success. He makes history interesting by connecting it to modern day and really helping you understand the WHY of history. Fair grader, clear expectations, and doesn't take any BS, which I really respect. Take him if you can!
Taken Corbally for two history classes. Enjoyed both courses. Texts were interesting and engaging, namely Daly and Goldstone texts. Corbally uses one of his own authored texts for the courses as well, about DVC student family histories. Enjoyed reading this--it helped to link actual historical events to real people at DVC in my mind.
