EXCELLENT CLASS TAKE IT
a brilliant professor, one of the best in the department
This dude is a raging hippie, do not even think of taking his class unless you like hugging trees. He encourages you to express yourself, as long as your views are congruent with his. Otherwise a fun class, but dont disagree cause your grade will suffer
Creed is one of the best teachers at this school. He's the reason I became a poli sci major, and I would recomend him to anyone. He's the best teacher I've ever had.
TAKE THIS CLASS!!! lots of work and reading, but totally worth it. less lecturing, more open class discussion about stuff that really matters. almost made me wish i was a political science major :)
Very difficult course, but Creed is a good guy and an excellent professor. You learn an ungodly amount about the region. Only sign up if you have a deep interest of the Middle East and are not afraid of taking a "B" or "C."
LOVED THIS CLASS! Don't take it if you're not interested in the middle east because it is a lot of work. Very hard class, but an excellent teacher who provides AWESOME study guides. I liked him so much I'm taking another class with him next semester.
Fun class. Way easy. But watch out for the higher level courses. He's so great, though. I love him with ever fiber of my being. He wants you to suceed
he is a great prof. who loves what he does... you gotta do the work though, but no final!
one of the best at c of c...great guy and very knowledgeable...you get from the class what you put in
Tough Class, Lots of work, but VERY interesting, class is almost all discussion
very intelligent guy, class is almost all discussion, which i like. if you are interested in contemp. issues, like soc. sec., education, etc. this is the class for you
Holy Hell is this class hard! His 3 tests are SOBs, and the 3 papers aren't a walk in the park either. However, to make up for it, class is interesting. Oh, did I mention the readings are outrageously long? I'd say a big fat no if I had the chance aga
Way too many assignments and VERY long readings. It takes him forever to return any graded papers and the debates are group grades which is completely unfair. Although the topics we discussed were interesting, it was way too much work.
interesting class and smart guy, but a lot of work if you are just taking it as an elective
Dr. Creed is a great professor! Take all of his classes.
good class, but only take if you are very interested. lots of reading, random assignments and a big issue assignment. Pretty abstract class altogether(you'll have no idea what your grade is until the end of the class), but fun and interesting if Politics is your thing.
My favorite professor from CofC after one class. Very interesting, though provoking, will help you out completely if you show some concern. I would take every class by him, no matter how long the reads are!
Tough class, but fun. The class is always discussion. Like others said, lots of reading and writing. Assignments sometimes pile up and become burdensome. He takes a long time to get grades back but is very accessible and helpful if you talk to him. Give it a try if you enjoy poli sci.
Still don't know what IRT is! ;) He is waaaay too smart to be teaching... he should be writing books for other smart people to read. The class was really good, though. Very interesting, and he's a good guy. Interesting, but tough! Be prepared for a lot of work.
This guy should be published all over the place. Every time I turn on the "News Hour" I'm looking for him. Great guy. Extremely nice. Perhaps he tries a little too hard to squeeze info out of stupid people during lecture and it can leave the rest of us bewildered. Highly recommended though.
EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE PROFESSOR!! He is hard, and gives a lot of papers, but the information that you absorb from them are well worth the class. His turn-around on papers is low, but, for the most part, he gives you the grade you deserve. Only bad part is that you have to read the paper EVERY DAY!
Creed is an amazing professor. We have class discussions everyday and we stayed very informed on what is going on in the world. No tests or finals, but there is one quiz on-line a week. A lot of papers, but they are short and easy if you have any knowledge or interest in POLS.
A great guy that is very intelligent. You will learn alot and you will work alot. His lectures are very informative and he will go out of his way to help you. If you keep up with the readings and take good notes, you will do fine. However, if you don't, you will regret it when you get the study guide and do not put off doing his research paper.
John Creed is one of the best and most challenging prof. in Pol Sci. The class has a lot of reading, writing, and tests that literally take two days, but it is worth the knowledge you gain.
This guy is a joke he never gets things graded it you take him you are just dumb. I beg you please do yourself a favor and do not take him. He has tenure and will not hesitate to fail you.
Nice guy, pretty easy class except for those annoying weekly current events quizzes. Class consists mostly of discussion, which is pretty entertaining.
Dr. Creed's class was probably the hardest I've taken at CofC, but well worth it. I had to work my ass off, but I learned a lot and I was really pushed to do my best. Take him if you like to read A LOT (100+ pages a night easy) and enjoy being challenged as a student. Not an easy A by any means.
This guy is a total hippie. John Kerry is a ****. Does not understand that Walmart creates jobs for Americans for people who otherwise wouldnt have jobs. He's a northerner who thinks hes the only enlightened one this side of the mason dixon line. He should not be injecting his hidden political agenda whether its right or left wing.
A fantastic professor who challenges students and is constantly revising his reading materials and approach to teaching in order to stay current and become a more effective teacher.
great teacher. knows his stuff. class is pretty much all discussion. if you can read and write you will be fine in his 102 class. however, don't take it if your lazy because it's probably more work than you would expect of a 102 class. does not inject his ideology into class discussion. i definitely recommend it if polisci is your thing.
one of the smartest, well-read professors I've ever had
He's smart, but there are some basic requirements that professors should meet, such as grading and returning assignments in a reasonable period of time. It's halfway through a semester in which we've returned 4 major assignments. He's given us back 1 of them and NO midterm grade. Perhaps he should apply his brains to giving more timely feedback.
AWESOME TEACHER.
hardest prof. i ever had. WAY to demanding esp. since he cant get your grades back for a paper until the end of the semester. smart guy but he expects more than he gives. if i had taken a class with him before my senior year i probably would have changed my major from polisci to anything else.
One of the smartest professors at the college. Extremely well read and very politically neutral. His classes are hard and he requires a lot of reading and a lot of theorizing. I highly recommend him, but he will require a lot. If you are ever confussed, he is always there and will respond very quickly to emails and calls.
This class requires a lot more work than I expected, but it's definitely worth taking!
Contemporary Political Issues should be a fun and interesting class. With Creed, its not. The work load is rediculous for a 100 level class. I thought I was taking a GPA booster... instead I had to work my a** off just to maintain a decent grade. Don't take it. Seriously.
Great teacher and fantastically interesting class, but it's not a typical 100 level class in terms of work. Be aware that there is a heavy emphasis on reading and writing (albeit all of it is interesting). With that said, Dr. Creed is an awesome guy and the class is a lot of fun, it's just not an easy A by any stretch of the imagination.
most wonderful professor i've ever had. this man deserves to be recognized for his outstanding commitment to learning/teaching on a much higher level. i have learned more about politics in this one class than i have my entire collegiate career. he gives great feedback, pushes you to think outside the box, and has changed my overall outlook on life
He is willing to help and truly does want you to do well. But, he expects and demands too much. The amount of reading is ridiculous and he doesn't cover all the material during class time. You're expected to shift thru the huge amount of reading on your own. I do not respect him because he takes weeks, if not a month, to return tests, papers, etc.
he is an INCREDIBLE professor!! Although the readings are intense, you will come out smarter for having gone through them...if you try your hardest, he will not fail you. He is a tough teacher only b/c he wants to push you to do your best...i say BEST TEACHER ON CAMPUS
I cannot say enough great things about this man. He is so passionate about teaching and his students. Of course, he does expect a lot of his students but this is college people, it's not meant to be easy. You will work, but you will learn more in one of his classes than most of your 4 years. Hands down, one of the best CofC has to offer.
He is a good teacher and knows, or seems to know, what he is talking about. The biggest problem for me was the time we had to take a test. He says the sort answers should be no more than a paragraph or two, but often you can't re-state the question in the amount of space.
Really knows his stuff on the middle east, and I learned a lot in his class, but wow, the reading can get pretty heavy.
It's a simple concept: You assign students work, grade it, and RETURN IT. Otherwise we are left with the assumption that you grade arbitrarily based upon favorites, ass.
Dr. Creed is the best professor at CofC. Bc Dr. Creed teaches a College class, unlike most others. LOTS of reading, but he is unbelievably knowledgeable and teaches material in a crystal clear way that fills your brain nearly beyond its capacity. I have never gained more from a class than I have this semester in a few weeks w Creed.
Dr Creed is perhaps the best professor at CofC because he actually assigns work, teaches you things, and works harder than he makes you work. But trust me, you'll be working harder than you ever have. One of his students recently was heard saying: "i bet i will too. i mean after creed. i can do anything. i can fly higher than the mountain
John Creed is awesome! he is super friendly, very helpful and really loves his students. But his teaching is sometimes all over the place and his class requires A LOT of out of class work... but i highly recommend him if you don't mind working and want to learn a lot. He won't fail anyone who tries hard.
Tons of reading that you'll never complete. Terrifying writing assignments and tests. But ultimately one of the most rewarding classes/professors for serious POLS students. Great lectures and discussion. Only complete negative is you won't see the assignments/tests for weeks and weeks after you turn them in.
A really great professor, but the amount of material to read and comprehend to his standards is unrealistic at best. If you have a full schedule, don't try to take this class. I think the grading was fair, but that being said, putting in an average amount of hours will result in a full grade lower than you're used to.
As many have previously stated, Dr. Creed is a great professor. Be prepared to cruise through all 300 printout sheets at the library, in addition to the required texts (which will be read cover to cover) you will be reading a pretty unreasonable of E-Reserves. But, he knows the topics inside and out and is EXTREMELY helpful. Best Professor I've had
I am a poli sci major and this guy is awful, he drones on through class in a monotonous voice, is absolutely useless in his office hours, requires so much reading that most of the class wont attempt it, resulting in a class that is characterized by his asking questions, followed by silence. Top 3 Biggest regrets of college is taking his class.AVOID
Had him for IR in the Middle East. Hardest class I've ever taken, but I learned more than I have in any other class. A TON of reading, don't take if you're a slacker or have a tough schedule. Recommend getting a partner/team and splitting up the reading. Definitely worth it if you can manage it. Extremely smart guy.
I took John (as he prefers to be called, not Dr. Creed) for politics of the Middle East, and I absolutely loved it; he is an amazing professor. Although he is not easy, you WILL learn so much more than most classes. The main thing that deters people from getting a good grade is the reading; if you dont do the reading, you will not do well. TAKE HIM
Hard class but the man is a great teacher. There is alot of reading and writing but it is very worth it if you have an interest in being a political science major. He gives great feedback and took the time talk to each student individually. If you're willing to put in the time, I recommend his class.
This class is very challenging but also incredibly rewarding!! LOTS of reading so take it during a semester when your other classes aren't reading intensive. You will write more papers in this class than (likely) all your others combined. But, Creed is great and you'll learn so much! Challenge yourself, take his class!!
Poli Sci is my major and i was excited to take this class. However, Dr. Creed is ruining my enthusiasm. There is SO much reading you will never be caught up. He is unclear and you never really know what he wants from you. This class is awful and I regret taking it. Trust me, if you want a straight-forward, comprehensible class then avoid this guy.
Creed is an amazing professor but this class was one of the hardest things I have ever done. He knows the material and is a genius. He expects a lot out of his students but he will work with you every day if you need it. Take this class but be ready to work
I was really excited going into this class, but there was SO much reading there was no way to enjoy the class. Practically no discuss and a VERY strict grader. Would not recommend him.
On a personal level, Professor Creed is a very nice man. However, his teaching style is counter-productive. He is not clear on what he wants to see from his students. Sometimes, he will ask a question on a test, then take points off for not answering something he didn't ask for on the test. Extremely stressful class!
Best teacher at the entire College. People complain he is a tough grader, requires a lot of reading, etc. This is college, not a walk down the parade. The only regret I have is not taking more classes with him. Most helpful and dedicated prof during office ours too. I learned more from Dr. Creed than all other profs together. Miss him
Amazing professor! Yes, he makes you earn your grade. He is very knowledgeable, therefore, you cannot b.s. his tests. He is extremely helpful outside of the classroom and also provides worksheets for every topic discussed for a better understanding.
Dr. Creed is one of the greatest teachers here. He knows everything possible about the subject. No doubt though you need to earn the grade. This is my favorite class and I am probably receiving a B- or a C+ but it is worth it. I can not begin to explain how much more developed my concepts of politics are now. Take the class.
Dr. Creed truly is a great PROFESSOR. He cares about each one of his students as an individual and wants them to succeed. He is however EXTREMELY difficult in both a time consuming and the academic standard he demands. It is not impossible to make a decent grade but it requires about 3 times more time and energy than other classes.
One of the best professors at CofC. His classes are a lot of work, BUT it is great preparation for those who are planning on law/grad school. Trust me.
Hands down best professor at COFC. This guy doesn't kid around. Slacking is not acceptable and it will result in a low grade. If you're not in college to let someone teach you then take a gym class. Lots of reading, lots of writing, lots of help and one amazingly advanced student at the end. Love you John and thanks.
By far my favorite class but by far my hardest. You have to write a 2 page memo every week and have 4 tests a semester. He gives long study guides and pulls exact questions from guide for test. so study! If you don't go to class you will fail. He is so helpful outside of class and will explain anything that is confusing. Learned a lot this semester
Tests were all Essays and IDs. Gave study guides which if completed were helpful but took so so long to complete. Lots of writing, really needed to understand what was going on to do well.
Best professor I had at CofC. He expects his students to work for their grade and expects you to keep up with readings, which there are a lot of, in order to succeed at writing the many papers he assigns. However, I felt like I learned so much in the two classes of his I took and would have loved to take more of his classes. Totally worth the work!
Dr. Creed really achieved something magical in his intro class by turning me from an interested political science student to down-right hating everything about coming to class. The books he assigned have been out of print for years and are impossible to find. And good luck without them, every single concept is from the book. Horrible class.
Creed is a great teacher, but makes you work for your grade. He's an extremely tough grader, but he gives A LOT of feedback. Go to his office hours if you're not doing well, and he'll help. If you really want to learn, I recommend taking his class.
I truly loved having Creed as a teacher. He never makes you feel wrong or as if you know nothing but often encourages you to refine your understandings of world politics. You have to read. He likes it when you talk in class. you will learn a lot from him.
This was both one of the most helpful and the most difficult classes I have ever taken. Sure, there was a lot of reading and he expects a lot. But he really knows his stuff, and lays an awesome foundation for any other Political Science class you plan on taking. Definitely would recommend.
I've never met a person so in love with "The Economist." Expect LOTS of reading, a weekly paper, and 4 page, single-spaced study guides for the three exams. Professor Creed is helpful, but his class is significantly harder and involves much more work than the majority of 100-level classes.
This class will consume your life when you're in it. I've never done so much reading or studied so much for a test. But you have to trust the process, you'll come out having learned more than you thought possible from an intro class. Creed is a must if you're a poli sci major.
It is a challenging course and he expects a lot from you but he really really works with you and helps you genuinely learn a lot.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE NOT POLI SCI MAJOR, you will waste so much of your time. This is an incredibly hard class and would not be worth it if its for Gen Ed. You have a 3 page paper due every week, lots of reading, and hard tests. Lectures are hard to follow, and he rarely gives feedback to you and if he does, its months later.
A friend recommended that I take this class, and so I did and I do not regret it. He is an amazing and brilliant professor. The class owns you for an entire semester, but it is doable with the normal course load from other classes. If you are pre-law, then this class prepares you well for reading and critical thinking.
Dr. Creed is probably my favorite professor that I have had so far at the College. He WILL make you work for a good grade and the tests are really challenging, however he is one of the smartest people I have ever met as well as one of the most caring and understanding. Really willing to work with you and he is a MUST if you are a poli sci major!
Professor Creed is a great teacher and you will learn a lot from his class. The readings and essays are hard but nothing too difficult. He gives great feedback but usually takes his time on giving them back. Very understanding. You can tell he cares about you as a student outside of his class. Would recommend for any interested Poli sci major
This course is tough. There is lots of reading and thought, but it was super rewarding. There's a 20-25 page research paper due at the end, and some difficult tests throughout, but I learned more than I expected to. He assigns so many papers that he takes months to grade and return work which is annoying, but his comments are always great.
4.2 is outrageous! DR. John Creed is pure butter. This guy is one of the best professors on the planet. Nearly perfect. He would put us in s "Socratic" circle and let us talk.
Dr. Creed is the BEST. Hands down the most passionate professor I've ever had. I looked forward to going to class every day. He never talks at you, always with you; every class is a super interesting discussion. You will WORK for sure but you'll learn so much and if you're actually interested in poli, taking Creed will really benefit you.
I love John Creed with my whole heart. I have never had to work harder for a class, but it has made the learning experience so much better. He is truly a staple for the political science department and I highly recommend him to all students. You will read more than any other class that semester, but you will learn so much. He truly loves his job.
Dr. Creed is the most dedicated professor at CofC, hands down. He is highly intelligent and will make sure you understand what you need to improve on in his class. I struggle keep up with his class but he is an amazing professor. He is extremely accessible. As long as you work with him, he will work with you. 10/10 recommend as long as you work!
professor creed is great. would not recommend if you aren't a poli sci major, because it can get confusing if you're not really into it. a short 3-4 paper due every week and lots of reading so beware of that. he gives very detailed feedback and is very accessible outside of class. i plan on taking him again soon.
If you are not a poli-sci major do not take this class unless you have nothing to do but read and write papers every week. Assigns papers as if his class is the only thing I have to worry about, took time away from classes that matter for my major. He's a nice guy and clearly passionate about what he teaches, but this class made me miserable.
He is clearly very bright and loves sharing his knowledge, but his class is really hard for an intro level course. Papers are due constantly, with heavy reading due each class. Quizzes on the reading are nearly impossible, and while Creed gives good feedback, expect a long turn around time.
Dr. Creed is one of the best teachers on this campus. This class is hard and he makes you work for a good grade. But if you put in the effort and get on his good side, youll be golden.
I LOVE him and would take again BUT get ready to work! He is a genius and is eager to share his knowledge with you. Papers due every week and longer papers due sporadically make his class HARD. His assigned reading is easy and short which makes it easier to be prepared for class. He also requires you to attend events out of class which can be hard.
This guy is my favorite polisci professor I've had at CofC. He lectures with little visual aids which is difficult for a visual learner, but he will make himself available to you whenever you need and as much as you need. Super cool and very knowledgeable. Class is a lot of reading and hard tests with a 25 research paper due during finals
Creed is a good professor that clearly knows what he is talking about. However, the homework is a lot especially is your taking a lot of other hard classes. There is usually 12-page at the minimum. The readings that he gives are very dense and extremely boring and then gives quizzes that are very difficult when the readings are so dense.
Creed is very smart, but don't take this class if you want to be an unbiased, thoughtful political scientist. As was mentioned, the readings are very heavy, but they are all aligned with his political beliefs, and he will berate anyone who does not agree... And he quite literally made up midterm grades (I have written 10 papers, 3 have been read).
Great guy whos knowledgeable and cares about the subject. The class is a lot of work though about 12+ readings and 2 short papers per week. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU DONT WRITE WELL YOU WONT PASS THERE ARE NO GRADES OTHER THAN PAPERS/DISCUSSION POST.
