he has lots of knowledge, but sometimes he changed what he said. also there's no textbook. every exam has 10 identify questions and 3essay. essay is really terrible he wants to write more and more. but there's no exact answer. you will need a recorder.

John knows a LOT about art, there's no denying that, but he knows nothing about how to make art interesting for students. He knows how to totally beat a painting to death, though. Also, his exams are very difficult, so make sure you study a ton.
HORRIBLE! calls on ppl in a lecture hall of 300 people... exams are really hard, a lot of memorizing- if you miss a class you are screwed, can be rude
Cunnally's tests are very difficult but always grades on a significant curve. He has a rather sharp wit which makes him interesting to listen to. That's a good thing, because the subject matter usually isn't.
Tests are very detailed, and he takes attendance every day in a 300 person lecture hall!!! The class was fun at first, but then I ended up hating it because of him. There is no book to study from, so you have to rely on lecture material.
His tests are really hard. You need to study your butt off. But his lectures are interesting and sometimes his (unintended) sexual comments can be amusing.
Very unclear, and expected students to memorize an impossible amount. He has had twenty or thirty some years to learn this, we had a few weeks, but were expected to know as much as him. Impossible! I'm a straight A student and received a D plus.
Like everyone else has said John knows his art, but also has had 30 years of repeating it over and over to know it. We have a few weeks to learn an obscene amount of information that is sometimes interesting, but most the time not because he rambles on!
I like John, I think he knows what he is talking about. The stuff he requires his students to learn is a lot, but its not that hard to learn if you go to lecture and pay attention.
Very very hard class. Lots of studying and note taking. I won't tell anyone not to take a Cunnley class because I did like the guy and he does knows his stuff, but I will say, be beyond prepaired to pull all night study sessions. Flash cards help!
THe man is tough, and it sucks to study so hard, but that's what college is about. I've heard from numerous people and feel myself that he taught well, and he made himself available for help if you needed it. I wish he was the instructor for my current class...
he gives out so much information....his tests are really hard. let's just say i'm glad to be done with his class.....blah!
Tough but interesting. If you go to lecture and listen and take notes, you should have no problem as long as you don't procrastinate too much before tests.
Wow.. be ready to make notecards.. I probably had 800
Hardest Class I have ever taken. He freaked out a few times on students and made a complete ass of himself. VERY unprofessional. Tons of studying and not easy stuff by any means. he has a photogra[-phic memory so he teaches with his eyes closed. very weird.
If you don't have to take this class, I wouldn't advise it. It was the hardest class I've taken yet. You have to constantly study and his tests are ridiculously hard. He also grades kind of hard on the papers.
Cunnally is amazing... he has a phototgraphic memory like ive never seen. he just closes his eyes then talks for the entire period... hard info. to learn but he is facinating
I have never learned so much in my entire life. Incredibly interesting class. Tests involve a great deal of writing and memorization and are nearly impossible if you do not attend lecture. He expects students to remember a great deal of information, but it's bearable. Very interesting man!
that was the hardest art history ive taken.. maybe because it was the first one. you have to memorize soo much information, but the man does know his stuff. he wasnt very nice to me when i went to him for extra help though.
He was such a good teacher and is very smart. He somehow had the ability to relate most things to sex, which was a riot! And he drives an old caravan and wears a courduroy jacket to class everyday! Who can beat that?!? I got a B in his class and didn't do too much compared to my other art classes.
Pretentious ass. Hard class but LEARNED A HELLUVA LOT! Like the guy but wow. What a course. HARD HARD HARD. I believe that it helped shape my understanding of art history. I'd take it again for the challenge.
I love Cunnally...he's so hilarious.
Very difficult, writing all the time, get cramps in my hands. Got to know EVERYTHING he says breaths or coughs. He is peculiar in behavior also.
So, he's about the craziest professor I've ever had. He's just very eccentric!

This man is an excellent teacher. Any time I have to take an Art History class I try to see which ones he is teaching first. Don't get me wrong - he is a tough teacher. None of his classes are easy and you better know how to take notes! But he has a way of
one more thing - do not miss any classes of his. he is very serious about attendance and won't hesitate to fail you for not showing up a few times - yes A FEW.
I hate that man!
Do NOT miss a class, but he knows his stuff and will make things interesting so that you know the material!
The guy looks like a lepruchaun and talks really quietly. His class isn't that hard, just memorize the slides and listen in class. Really crazy about attendance--show up!! Posts pictures on Plato's cave but not notes about them so attendance is actually in your best interest. Gives EC occassionally. Recommended for easy A.
I took this class, and I was excited about his setup, however, that soon led to his mindless tests, followed by to fact that he wanted you to know everything he had ever talked about , he was not that interesting when I had to study for days just for a quiz. If student's grades reveal how good one can transfer information, he is the worst!!!!!!!!!
Yuck. I took this class and in the beginning, I thought it was going to be awesome because I thought I understood what he wanted from us. Then I got my grade for the first test... it was bad. He asks questions about minute details that are really quite irrelevant. If you try to study for this class, study for everything you think won't be on it
Ridiciously hard
Wow He Will Fail you for not showing up really go to all the classes caused i missed like 3 and he sent me a email saying unless i met with him i was going to fail...test over very small details, but grades on a curve so if your lucky you will get a class of 200 people that never study...
He is a really hard professor, but his class is really interesting. I really enjoyed this class even though i didnt get the grade that I wanted on it. Just make sure to take really good notes during lecture.
The most detail oriented man I'd ever met in my life. Kind of a jerk. I got sick and was in the hospital for 4 days and he said he'd fail me if I missed one more class period because that's what he allowed. But I learned a TON from that class. Take impeccable notes.
hardest teacher i have had at college yet, because he counts off for everything. He is very distracting also, he talk with his eyes closed for minutes at a time and has the oddest voice, change classes ASAP
HOLY CRAP! Change as soon as you can... unless you like to devote every last minute of your off-time to studying slides and notes from this class, and only this class. You will want to hurl yourself off of a bridge once you see your grade!
extremely difficult tests
Very intelligent man. Grading criteria strict though. However, he is fair on grading.
He is a very difficult professor. He expects you to spend all of your time on his class, and face it Art majors have a hard enough time doing everything for a studio and this on top makes it near impossible to finish everything. Avoid him if you can. He's the reason I dropped my Art major.
get different professor..enough said
SWITCH OUT!!! This class was horrible! You are basically required to study nonstop. Hard teacher, no forgivness... attendance mandatory! He refers to his tests as "the monster." Get out while you still can. I almost quit school because of this class!
Yes, as an architecture student now, I see these ratings being made by first years. Cunnally wasn't bad...a little eccentric and detail oriented, but design is detail oriented. I still managed an A, and a bit of advice to those first years: This is a weed-out class, intentionally made hard to get the cream of the crop for acceptance.
I had a 4.0 in grad classes, working full time as a single mom, then I had him. He docked my grade because I had to travel for work and when my kid got sick--despite talking with him and having written verification. His tests are so chuck full of nonuseful memorization it's ridiculous. This has the potential to be a great class--but he's awful.
Most people complain about his class but if you take notes in lecture and study hard for the test you'll do fine. There are a couple projects that you have to work hard on too. I guess what I'm trying to say is they give you the grade you deserve. If you work hard, you'll get a decent grade.
I'm in another Art History class now and I think Cunnally's class was a perfect foundation on design. Even though the class was rough, my glad to have it under my belt. Plus it helped me learn how to study for art history: name, date, arist!
boring.. hard tests.. all memorization..
The class isn't overly hard, it just requires a lot of memorization. He gives you all the slide identifications, so as long as you know those, they help you out a lot for the rest of the test, besides just the I.D. questions. The class can be extremely boring, but as long as you take notes and study for the tests, it's not too difficult.
Cunnally is oh-so-infamous for bad reasons, but you won't realize how much you appreciate him until you have a teacher who teaches the same subject with less passion and knowledge. Sure the tests are hard and you will be required to memorize TONS of images, but you'll remember them for years to come, ITS WORTH IT. If you love art history TAKE HIM
Goofy guy, often lectures with his eyes closed, covers a lot of material in a short amount of time. The class demanded a huge amount of memorization of seemingly mundane details, but was overall interesting. Only used the two graphic novels once, just borrow them from the library.
I have learned a ton of stuff from this person. He is an excellent professor.
John Cunnally is Old Skool, for both good and bad. Cunnally wants absolute memorization. But his tests are graded competitively and demand an exceptionally fast hand in order to compete with the factual diarrhea your peers may generate. If you write S-l-o-w-l-y, but have a good memory, you're guaranteed a C. And I teach American history now!
Poorly structured lectures, readings are never discussed in class, disdainful of students and can be downright abusive of students that visit him during office hours. Currently are midway through semester, and on 2nd week of content according to syllabus. Numerous complaints to Dean's Office, but Cunnally is tenured. WORST PROFESSOR AT ISU.
Why even try?
the tests are beyond hard and he grades the projects ridiculously. i find the actual lectures somewhat amusing because he is so... unique. if you go to class and study well, you should do decent in the class.
He's so condescending and rude to the students who ask questions. And he's so inconsistent in his grading it's ridiculous. Study hard, you'll get a C. Study an hour every day for two weeks beforehand? You'll get a B. To get an A you have to be a grad student, that's all there is to it. I'm a straight-A student and this class is killing my GPA!
He IS ridiculously hard. Harsh grading with tests and projects. This man is brilliant, however, and any class you take with him will be worth your time and money. Always attend class, write down everything he says (even the little things are helpful), and make flash cards!
John Cunnally never opens his eyes. EVER. When you talk to him, he doesn't listen. If you understand him you are one of the gifted few. Sure, he can be funny sometimes but random innappropriate jokes DO NOT make up for working my ass off for the tests.
His tests are ridiculously hard, but he curves the grade... sort of. He lectures with his eyes closed. Rumor has it thats because he has a photographic memory, makes sense, since he knows pretty much EVERYTHING about Design History. Really interesting class. I barely studied and pulled a C+. Just go to lecture and listen.
I worked hard in this class, enjoyed the material, and ended up receiving an A. That being said, the professor was quite condescending to any students to dared to ask questions, lectured with his eyes closed, and the majority of the class scored very poorly on his tests. To do well you must be able to memorize and quickly write copious information.
Lecture only class with no book. I took this class in 2004 and is still the material I remember the most. I had to take it twice and it is a hard "weed out" class but also very interesting.
Loved art history, loved the teacher, learned a lot even though my grade didn't reflect this because Dr. Cunnally's exams were so hard. Not sure one could study enough for his classess. So much material!
You will hate this professor by the end of the class. Whenever you see him around the COD you will glare without having to think about it. But the thing to remember is that even if you hate him he is the one who is spewing the material so you need to listen to him. Study your ass off for the tests and get through it. Make flash cards.
I really liked his class and tho I only got a B I feel like I learned alot
He is an extremely difficult professor. At first I didn't mind him, yeah he's a quirky guy, but it wasn't so bad. Then the first test came along. I was prepared but spent the whole class period (50 min) writing my answers non-stop. I got the test back and I missed 15 points, still an A-, but this is ridiculous! He grades poorly and inconsistently!!
Really hard tests, inconsistent grading, really picky and unwilling to answer questions
All the information needed for tests is given on WebCT, so honestly even though attendance is required and the tests are intense, getting a good grade just requires a lot of memorization. Really not that difficult.
The hardest class I had to take. It had both it's good days and it's bad. Days where I loved the random eccentricities of Cunnally and other days where he non-understanding attitude towards the students made me want to punch him in the face. If you want to get a good grade in this class I suggest taking ONLY this class and studying your booty off.
Attendance is key to getting a good grade in this class. Not only is there a 10% grade booster at the end for being above the class average for attendance, but in order to do well on the test you need the information given in class, not just the terms and slides on webCT. Grading is VERY tough, but it is honestly based on the effort you put in.
Though I learned a lot from this class and did well in it, I stressed the most over this class. Make sure to review all information given and study hard. The test are no where close to easy and he is not a consistant grader so write down everything you know.
Dr. Cunnally is a difficult professor, but if I could marry him, I would.
Try to take any other teacher. It's curved but very hard.
Dr. Cunnally seems to get off from humiliating and picking on his students. While he knows a lot about the subjects he teaches, his expectations for what students should known is unrealistic. He tests are extremely difficult; they are a massive memory exercise on 400+ slides. Avoid any classes with him; they are not worth it.
Hardest class I have taken to date. Expects way too much from his students on tests. I studied a majority of my time with this class in the semester and still did poorly.. even though I never missed a day of class. Do not take classes with him unless you want to dedicate every moment of your life on this class to get an A or have prior knowledge.
his is probably one of the hardest classes I have taken to date. But saying that, I loved every minute of it. I still remember a lot of the information, even after almost two years. If you enjoy learning random facts, take this class. If you don't want to spent around 20 hours studying to receive and A in this class. Don't take it.
I've been told that Art 292 is a decent class if you take it with another prof besides J.Cunnally. His tests are ridiculous and he teaches his art history class like DSN 183. They aren't the same! Art 292 shouldn't include philosophy, religion, physics, and general trivia. He's horrible. Avoid at all costs. He's been suspended before.
The exams are difficult and the attendance policy is extremely strict. Regardless, this was my favorite class EVER. He seamlessly ties together art, architecture, culture and philosophy into an entertaining hour. Coming out of this class, I have actually learned and retained knowledge that I plan on using in the future.

All student's rating Cunnally low are sour because he made them work hard. YOU CAN'T SLACK IN HIS CLASSES BUT YOU WILL LEARN! Unlike many college courses Art 292 was interesting and I took things from it I will learn. I am smarter from it but prepare to study hard or get your ass kicked. No Bullshit in his class.
The grade is determined by a few projects and the tests. He has a "different" sense of humor which was amusing at times but it doesn't make up for how hard the tests are and how strictly he grades them. You will have to work hard to succeed in this class and will learn but it will be by your own doing. If you are taking this as a gen ed avoid him.
Difficult class, I learned quite a bit but overall he is a hard professor. You must come to class or you will stand no chance at his tests, as long as you work hard and put the time in it's manageable to get a decent grade in his class.
Not for the faint of heart. Don't miss class. Write down every word he says, and enjoy the Cunnally moments. Make flash cards with your notes and memorize everything he said about each slide. He inspired me to minor in art history, despite the obvious lack of jobs that would lead to. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be Cunnally-ed.
This class has a CRAZY amount of work involved. DO NOT TAKE DURING THE SUMMER! You have to write a one page paper on EVERY lecture, a three page paper once a week, peer review other students papers weekly, create and give an oral presentation, and write 3 four page research papers. You do learn a ton, but it's at a steep price for your sanity.
One of the toughest classes I've taken to date. Cunnally expects the students to have the same interest in trivial art history things that he does. I disliked how students had to remember so many useless dates instead of the actual significance and influence of the art work. The class is supposed to be art history, but it is European art history.
You must work for your A in this class. And by work, take verbatim notes and fully understand the material. This course is rigorous but I loved it. Prepare to study a few days for each exam to truly know the material. Also, you only have 3 assignments so do well on them because if not, it will hurt your grade. That is the only reason I got a B.
Dr. Cunnally is consistently one of my favorite professors. His lectures are extraordinarily composed, often connecting subjects in a curious manner. That being said, be prepared to work hard. My first class with him was freshman year 1st semester. For the first time in my life I had to study, but its the most I've learned from a single course.
Way to much information in each secession in no specific order. Chronological order would help.
Cunnally gives you so much information during each lecture and expects you to remember everything. And the facts that he tests you on are just details in lectures instead of things he actually goes over. It's very difficult to study for this class. The class is interesting, but you must take rigorous notes and study EVER in order to pass the class
He talks funny. I was laughing on the first day. I missed 2 pages of information that day. He will just talk and talk continuously. The things that come out in the test is only 1/10 of his lectures. So you have got to predict what is he going to ask you on the exam.
Very difficult professor. Required memorization of minute details on his very difficult exams. Class much harder than it should have been; I ended up spending more time studying for this class than a 5 credit physics cource
HORRIBLE. Easily one of my least favorite teachers I've ever had, in my entire life. This class is basically about the most random things that you will never need to know in life. If its not a required class for you, do not take it.
He's very funny when he goes off subject, which is rare. He talks and talks the whole hour about the slides shown on the screen. His tests are very specific and since there isn't a book you need to take very good notes. His test are all written too. It's an interesting class but there's a lot to know for every exam.
This is the worst class I have taken at Iowa State. The exams are extremely hard & almost impossible to study for. If you don't have to take this class, I would highly recommend not to.
WOW. This class is awful...worse professor. This class plummeted my GPA. Awful professor.
I took DSN S 183 and 384 with Professor Cunnally. I didn't like 183 but he is really amazing with upper level classes. There is no doubt that his tests are very difficult but you learn so much and he is hilarious! He is hands down one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is for students that are up for a challenge and who actually want to learn
He is a very smart man, and he knows it. I took Dsn 183 with him and like him in that class. This class however was horrible. I love the subject matter but he makes learning it a chore. He isn't helpful out side of class, nor in class for that matter. He is now one of my least favorite professors. I would avoid taking a class with him if I was you.
This class is really interesting but I will never take another class with this teacher. The sheer amount of busywork is mind-numbing and very difficult for many students to keep up with in summer. Weekly peer reviews, weekly papers on the textbook, multiple research papers, daily questions & lectures. Very harsh grader too.
One of the most boring lecturers I've had. Happiness at not having a textbook deflated when I had to print a small book's worth of "free" reading material. Don't miss a lecture or you'll suffer in note-based homework & tests. Sorta snobbish when questions are asked in class & slides go fast so pay attention. Studied fairly hard to get a good grade!
Most boring lecture I've ever had. He is extremely irritating to listen to with the way he pronounces things. He was suspended once for teaching a 100 level class at a 300 level. He's just terrible. Never willingly take a class that he teaches.
This class is extremely interesting. It does not make up for how much you have to study for tests and our daily quizzes. The first test is over 3 books, 300 terms/dates/names, a tour, and an art show. The amount of information you have to obtain to get a decent grade is unbelievable. Remembering, I am only a freshman.
This class was very interesting and the teacher was pretty cool. The subjects learned were random and kinda useless to everyday knowledge but if you wanna be in design its good to learn. The exams can be a major pain and there are no study guides, you just have to memorize practically anything he says and take amazing notes during lecture.
He is confusing and his tests are very very difficult. The lecture content is too much and it gets difficult to learn and remember. He dims the lights down in the lecture which makes a sleepy class even more tiring and sleepy.
he may know a lot of art history stuffs, but he is the worst teacher I've ever seen. he destroys my interest on art
Very hard to focus in his class. He has a thing with chairs. It's creepy. His exams are ridiculously hard and if you miss even one class, you miss so much information that you might not pass the next exam. 0/10 would recommend.
Professor Cunnally gets bad comments because he has high expectations of his students. If you plan on putting in low amounts of effort in this class it WILL KILL YOU. However, his teaching style is engaging, extremely entertaining, and totally worth the gauntlet that is his class. Those who hate him, hate work. Simple as that.
Advertises that he is tenured & can do anything he wants. Art history is ranked as one of the most worthless majors--the course is worthless. For students trying to get a job, this class is huge landmine, & the time wasted memorizing dates takes away from more relevant classesstudies. I've worked in industry & strongly advise dropping it.
This course is required 1st year for design majors, but Cunnally makes it feel like a 400 level course. His lectures are dull & extensive, & the exams are way too difficult with way too much study material to go through. I've never gotten a D or lower in any class & I failed this one. Retook it the next semester with another professor; got an A.
Attendance does matter, even in the huge lecture halls. he usually assigns seats and will write down which are empty! You can't skip anyway because almost all notes come from his lectures - which by the way are extremely interesting! He is brilliant - his accent is entertaining - but don't ever take his classes unless you're ready to work.
Expect to memorize everything he says
John gets a bad rep because of how long his lectures are and how detail oriented he is on his quizzes. That is why I respect him and am taking two more of his classes. He is so knowledgable about art history and really goes in depth about the topics. If you don't like to actually learn, then don't take his classes.
There is a lot of work in this class, but all of the information is really interesting. Just make sure to set aside a couple hours a week on homework and weekly quizzes. There are no exams, but there are papers due every two weeks roughly.
The class is extremely time consuming for a course that is generally taken as an elective. There are 8, 3 page papers, 2, 5 page papers, and you have to write 12 paragraphs a week on top of this to meet the requirements. While the topic is interesting, the work required was unnecessary given that it was not taken in relation to my major.
This class is a lot of work. No other way to say it. You need to know every small detail about the things he discusses in class in order to get all of the points for the quizzes. I put a lot of time into this class and failed a quiz for not saying lapis lazuli is blue. Don't skip little details.
Thinking of skipping class because you are sick? Don't do it, he won't care and you will miss out on about 5 pages of notes you will have to take in class. He is extremely smart in his area of study but seems to miss the point that each student learns things differently from each other. Don't take a class from him! Emily Morgan is the best!
Cunnally is an insanely smart man. But it is a super hard class and he expects a lot from you. I'm on the fence about taking classes with him because he's a really good professor and I actually learn things but I always get overwhelmed with work load. Quizzes after every lecture and then expect to know everything for the exams.
Professor Cunnally is a hard grader and gives 15 point quizzes after every lecture. Even if you go to lecture and take good notes you still do not get 15/15 on the quizzes. I went to almost every lecture and took good notes and still rarely got 15/15 on my quizzes. He talks very fast and expects you to get everything he says so I suggest typing.
Cunnally knows what he is talking about, pretty sure he has a photographic memory, but this isn't an easy class. You need to pay attention, and don't hold back on details, there's no such thing as too detailed in terms of quiz/test answers. Expect to put a lot of time into the class. Recommend starting to study for the final exam at week three.
Cunnally is by far the hardest professor I have had so far at Iowa state. During lecture it's best to type notes because you should write everything he says because even the smallest details are important to him since he has quizzes 3 times a week and the tests are very hard. Recommend studying for the test with a group. Overall, a very smart prof.
Cunnally is the one professor I avoid at all costs. The way he talks is like nails on a chalkboard, he won't help the class with notes at all, gives exams after every single class expecting you to know 100% of what he rambled on about, and you'll obviously fail that quiz if you didn't go to class. If you can, find a different professor for ART H.
John is the most interesting and best lecturer I've ever had, I took 4 or 5 full pages of single spaced notes every class. After studying fairly hard I got a 20/100 on the first exam. You will be expected to know artist, title, date, and technique of around 50+ art pieces for each exam.
I took an online class from him thinking it would take up less of my time than a regular course because I work a lot. I was completely wrong. You have a two page paper due every other week, two 7 page papers during the semester, 3 quizzes per week and "journals". The only redeeming factor is that you can use the lectures during the quiz.
It was a very interesting class, but there were a lot of lectures, readings, and essays to write. It felt like a 300 level class with the amount of work. I thought it was really fun going to museums around campus to learn more about art.
too much assignments going on at the same time, you don't learn in this class yo memorize, dates, names, mediums ext. If he doesn't hear what he wants to hear in an answer you're dead.
Class is not very exciting, professor seems to make up things about pieces. Gives lots of homework, especially during exams. Would not take again, even though it wasn't very hard. Professor is also not helpful in the slightest
John is the best lecturer I've had at Iowa state. He has a way of weaving stories together that reveal connection you never saw before, he makes you see the cultural complexity in some of the completely mundane objects in our lives. If you miss any classes it will affect your grade. You kinda gotta bomb the first test in order to be ready for rest.
JC is one of the most respected art historians at ISU. That being said, he expects high quality work from all of his students. There is a steep learning curve for his aggressive teaching style, but it is for the best. If you take yourself and your studies seriously, you'll learn to appreciate how much you take away from the thoughtful lectures.
I took history of comics online so I was able to access lectures for quizzes. There's a lot of work, three quizzes a week, a short paper each week over a chapter in a graphic novel and a weekly forum post. There's also a big paper where you also have to respond to two other classmates paper. It's a pretty fun class though but its a lot of work!
3 lectures & essay quizzes a week, paper due every Wednesday (sometimes every other) & other assignments as well. This heavy work load would be fine if he wasn't such a hard grader, but if you make one small mistake in your essays you will suffer. I mentioned my concerns to him & his response was snooty & rude, threatening to increase difficulty.
He is very knowledgeable in his field and he expects you to become knowledgable during the class, making it fairly difficult. 3 quizzes, a forum post, and an essay a week can get pretty exhausting. However, it's not overly hard if you just write a lot. Be as detailed as you possibly can, and leave up the PP when taking the online quizzes.
I really dislike his ART 292 class but that aside he seems fairly knowledgeable but the approach he takes to teaching the class is not very helpful. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, he simply posts his lectures and you are to read over them. After reading the lecture he gives a quiz over the material.
On the 3 lengthy (roughly 1.5 hour) weekly essay quizzes he gives terms and asks how they relate to lecture but they are very cryptic. For example, there was a clue about a royal angler referencing a painting of a noble looking fisherman. He will not help you so you better understand the association. One minor detail left out results in Cs & Ds
He assigns an absurd amount of homework, probably 15 hours a week, and grades it all intensely
Lots of homework, all lengthy written quizzes and essays. Tough grader who requires extreme detail, sometimes with little basis in lecture or reading materials. Course was more like a 300-level class, and when concerns were brought up came off as rude/uncaring/snobbish. Interesting lectures and materials but be prepared to work for a good grade.
I went into this class thinking it was going to be an easy A. Oh was I wrong. So many quizzes and essays, two of which required going to art galleries around town. The only plus was that there were no tests or final exams. The material was interesting, though. Overall, it was probably a similar workload to my 5 credit physics class (221).
An awful teacher. Took an online Art history class and it was easy enough at first, but eventually he had some quizzes (3 a week) which were downright cryptic. It turned into busywork at best and killed my interest in the subject. When asked about the quizzes, his responses were basically "up yours".
By far one of the hardest classes I have taken which affected my other classes. When anything got graded by a TA, I often got good feedback and a grade that made sense. When Cunnally decides to grade he will find any flaw and dock you insane amounts of points. He is the stereotypical art history guru who is smart but won't level with his students.
Had him for online class. We had to watch lectures and take quizzes. For the quizzes we had 2 essay questions, one with 5 words from lecture which we had to say how they were used/how they related. He used words from the PICTURES (comic pages, mind you) and SYNONYMS of ones used in lecture. Not cool, dude.
Like the other comments said, you have something due pretty much everyday, and it's not easy either. Your quizzes are essay questions, and if you leave out one single detail, he will dock a full letter grade (his quizzes are only 10 points each). Good news is that he tells you exactly what he wants in your work, and even lists key words to include.
Avoid this professor at all costs! I'm taking his class for History of Photography and the amount of information per lecture you have to write down is insane. He expects you to write down his lectures word for word based on how the quizzes are. I am a fast test taker, yet his quizzes take 3+ hours to complete because he made them essay questions.
If youre looking for an interesting but easy online class, do not take this one. It may be called theHistory of Comic Books but it is not any comic book before the 1400s or any thats interesting to anyone who doesnt love art. I took it for an easy and interesting 3 credits and it almost immediately became more work than any other class.
Attendance is required to succeed in this class. Even when life's natural obstacles get in the way (grieving a loss, etc.), there is no leniency. He will not share any of the lecture material outside of class, which is the only source the content comes from. I want to learn, I want to succeed, but he is barring me from being able to.
You can do everything you can to write a correct answer, but he will always try to find something you missed and take points off. His midterm was confusing with unclear expectations. I don't mind his lecturing style, it's actually pretty engaging, but the homework, tests, projects, and grading is exhausting if you want a decent grade.
Absolutely awful. Class is essentially mandatory, and even if you go and write down everything he says, you will still get points taken off for the smallest thing on the DAILY quizzes. The coin project is the worst project I have done in my college career, which is saying a LOT, and if you are confused on literally anything, he won't give you help.
Overall, Cunnally was okay. His class was very interesting, but if you missed class, good luck with the lecture quizzes. You would be getting C's all the time. He also has slides, but they never have any text on them. So good luck with spelling. He will count points off if you misspell something. His exams are all oral, which was the only good part
Very tough grader with a high workload. Assignments are due daily and are all essay-based. I don't recommend taking this class during a busy semester.
Classes definitely oriented towards those who have a hunger to learn.
One of my favorite classes I have taken, but VERY homework heavy. If you're actually interested in the content of the course, the assignments are pretty easy.
This is a challenging course, but the professor provides clear guidance. Stay on top of the frequent quizzes and essays. unstuckstudy can be helpful for study prep alongside the textbook.
