I am not a math person at all, and i entered this class so afraid i was going to fail. Professor Curran saw my stress and really helped me out. He made the material as easy as possible, and he was empathetic to his students concerns. Definatly take him if all you need is a basic gen. ed. math class.
Very helpful, will do whatever he can to make sure you get the work done and accomidating. Not always very clear with everything but if you read he bookand take nots you can generally work it out. If not always feel free to ask he is happy to explain again in another way if needed. Very Nice guy and easy to go to. Responds to emails fast
Means well, is friendly and appears to be knowledgeable...but not very organized at all and not good at teaching. Frequently stops in middle of lectures to regroup or abandon examples. Came to class at least twice so far and has forgotten his notes. On line questions have incorrect solutions. Goes in depth into theory...but we aren't learning!
he is hard to understand
Really enjoyed him as a professor, but I must agree about him being a little unclear about some things. I definately was a math person and then when I entered his class, I didn't have much experience with pre-calc but he definately helped as much as he could and met with me a couple of times. Definately a fair instructor, but tricky.
Curran is not organized. He makes many mistakes while doing examples. He needs to review his notes before coming to class so that he is prepared. Also, he is very boring. The only good thing about him is his curve. Because he makes his class so difficult, he gives a great curve. 50% is a C. Be sure to read the book and go to the math lab for
Mr. Curran is an easy grader if you do you homework and keep your journal. As far as understanding the material, teach yourself, or go to his office hours as he will help you understand the solutions.
His class is easy if you do the assignment and attend classes. He knows probabilities very well. Ask him if you don't know how to do the works, he is very helpful. His assignments are never easy, but if you can do the assignments, then you will easily get an A in this class. The main point is to do exercises.
I cant put into words how horrible this professor is. I rarely complain about professers because I know this is college and we are supposed to be challenged, but his way of challenging us was making us learn the material on our own. He always makes mistakes in his notes. Exams are very hard. Really hard online assignments too. Do not take!!!!!
Very difficult to understand anything taught in class. Ended up spending two to four hours every other night AT LEAST with a study group to try and get through homework.
He was completely unclear and made very little sense. I would read the book, do the homework, attend class and I still had no idea what was going on. One day in class almost the entire class was angry because they were confused and lost. He made you get up in front of class and do problems and the class critiqued you.
This teacher is awful. He puts you on the spot by making you complete proofs in front of class and the class picks them apart. The majority of the class was lost. His lectures were not helpful. He is the perfect example for the saying "those who cannot do teach."
"Means well, is friendly and appears to be knowledgeable...but not very organized at all and not good at teaching." I agree with the person who said this. For Calc 1, if you had experience with calculus, youll do fine. If you've never had calculus do not take him. The problems are really difficult when we dont even know how to do the easy ones.
KEEP A BOTTLE OF TYLENOLS HANDY
hands down the worst teacher i ever had! i had him for differential equations and its the only time i ever dropped a class. there were many times he would waste the whole class doing one problem and then screw it up and not get the right answer, but yet expected us to be able to do it. avoid him at all costs! his class made me cry regularly!
awesome guy, laid back discussions i hate math and he made it not too bad
Professor Curran is clearly very intelligent. However, he doesn't really explain any of the pieces of things he's teaching, much less condescend to speak in language a beginning math student would know /much less/ teach from "easy" to "hard". He has one speed, and that is "difficult", which is exasperating because he's very often wrong.
I had Curran for MATH110. The class is hard, yes. But I went to his office hours and he was a great help if I was ever lost. You are going to have to actually try! Its not his methods or a flaw in his lessons, its your will to take his tools he gives you and use them. If you do the work he assigns there is no reason you can't pass with an A.
I have him this semester for math 110. I reguard math as the devil's handy work and was not excited to take college math. But his class is one that I barely have to worry about. He gives a manageable amount of homework, and you don't feel like an idiot for asking questions. The only thing is, he moves so fast if you space out you miss a lot.
basically had to learn materials on my own. besides that, he's a nice guy and obviously very intelligent, but sadly a bad teacher. if you have time to learn everything on your own, take it! worked my butt off and got an a. it's possible.
I have taken several other 300 and 400 level math classes from a variety of professors. However, Dr. Curran is the WORST professor I have had in my entire school career (Elementary-Undergrad). He is very smart but is VERY condesending, flies through complicated lectures, and assigns the hardest homework problems in the book. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!
I didn't think he was as bad as most people made him sound. His grading scale is unorthodox, but it works towards the students' advantage. The homework is hard. I did pretty well, and my strategy was to do every single exercise in the chapters gone over in the class. I understand this is too time consuming for some, but his class isn't impossible.
Easily the most difficult professor I've ever had. He goes through very complicated lectures very quickly, leaving every student confused. The material is very difficult and he does not treat it as such. He is a smart man but is not good at teaching this material. He assigns online homework that took us hours and hours to complete.
Very hard Professor. I still do not understand statistics and the class was very difficult. He went through lectures very quickly and no one understood. He goes to deep into the discussion and gives more information than you can process at one time. very Difficult I would recomend someone with a better teaching style. Do not take his class
Makes the material difficult to understand, not always clear. Lectures for the entire class period every day, moves very fast. If you're not a math person I wouldn't recommend Curran.
He would show up to class and not know how to do the problems. Many times would spend 45 minutes or so trying to solve a problem, then would give up. Many classmates had homework assignments lost due to his lack of organization. His lack of preparation was very prevalent and hindered students learning.
He is an extremely difficult professor, but quite fair. He assigned very difficult homework that took a group of us days to complete, and raced through the material in class. He is unorganized, and my biggest pet peeve is his inconsistency in how he does problems. All that said, he is very helpful outside calss and his grading is MORE than fair.
Math 170-elementary statistics: never again. If you have to take this class do NOT taken it with Curran. His grading is not only tough but impossible to understand. He stands at the board and presents the information rather than teaches it. If you like teaching yourself, this is the class for you.
Stands at the board and puts down information with no real explanation of what it means. So you better learn to teach yourself and classmates. DO NOT take this class with him or at all if you can avoid it. His scale is non-traditional and weighted so prepare to be confused. Nice man but horrible teacher. Takes attendance daily.
Extremely tough when it comes to grading. He spends the whole class writing on the board but not much teaching gets done. I had to teach myself the material in order to get my homework done. Attendance is taken daily so come to class. Overall, very boring class, don't take it unless you can easily teach yourself.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He had terrible handwriting and you can not read it. He does not give clear helpful notes, and he messes up formulas at least 2 times in a class period. I had to teach myself everything. His grading is confusing and just not a good professor. Do not take him
Take a nap before class because you WILL fall asleep and you WILL miss important and confusing topics he covers. READ THE ASSIGNED CHAPTER BEFORE LECTURE, it makes it a lot easier to understand. You get to make your own cheat sheet for every test, which you'll most likely depend on. Goes through problems thoroughly but fast, so pay attention!
He's actually really funny but super dry. He is nice and understanding and takes questions. Make to read the syllabus so you understand his grading system, otherwise you won't get why a 9/4 or 130% is failing. Take time to see him during office hours, study on your own, or go to math tutoring because guaranteed you won't get it on lecture alone.
read the text before classes so you understand the material better. Super hard class. And grading is weird. Go to class and do the homework
Math 170 is an entry-level statistics class, but Professor Curran makes it extremely difficult. His lectures are extremely long and confusing, and if you go to him after class his one-on-on explanations are not much better. I do not recommend taking this with him!!! If you take it, you have to teach yourself the entire course from the book.
He stands in front of the class, writes on the chalk board, and doesn't explain ANYTHING. Just throws a bunch of information at you with NO explanation. Very strange grading scale that also makes zero sense. I would strongly suggest taking a different professor!
He is a very funny guy but he talks about a lot of random things and puts things on the board and doesn't explain. Also he has a weird way of grading that is confusing. If you miss even 10 minutes of class, you are way behind.
Absolutely TERRIBLE professor! You will get nothing out of his lectures, and have to teach yourself everything from the book. Grades homework for accuracy, and has his own grading scale that doesn't make any sense. If you have him I highly recommend you drop or switch to a new professor.
I have been decent my entire life at math, and his class had me questioning how to find very basic things that I learned in 7th grade because he would overcomplicate them so much. He does have a strange grading scale but I think it works in the students favor. As long as you show effort, he will give you some credit on every problem you attempt.
Prof. Curran is knowledgeable, and can be funny, but isn't approachable at all and is really hard to relate to. There is a ton of homework, which is enormously time consuming. I never skipped a single class, took notes throughout the class each time, and I still understand basically nothing. Thankfully, he does allow a "cheat sheet" on tests!
He's really hard to relate too. As a person I don't really like him to be honest, but he is a solid professor and will slow down and explain things if you need him to. If you pay attention to the lectures you will have the best understanding. The book for the class is garbage and he even admits it. certainly very approachable though
Everyone says that he's really awful, therefore I was worried about taking his class. But he's a really great teacher, his lectures might not make sense at the beginning but he does a lot of examples in class that clarify things. He's a really nice teacher, and knows his math. He allows a cheat sheet for all tests, even the final!
I learned two things while having class with Curran: How to truly hate someone, and where my arteries came close to the skin surface. I learned the second one each time I was in his class, as I was constantly thinking about offing myself in an attempt to not have to see him again.
Hard material, confusing lectures, you won't learn much. However, his grading scale is very lenient. I suffered through 3 of Dr. Curran's classes. Unfortunately for many there is no way around taking him... Good luck!
Alright, so here's the deal. The man can't teach, he doesn't explain anything very well. Many times you'll hear him say "you'll learn how to do this in *insert class*" then uses it do YOUR HOMEWORK QUESTION. I recently studied for and took the P exam (passed) by using an online textbook and teaching myself probability because that class was awful.
This is a difficult subject. It's been the most difficult thing I've ever had to endure at EMU. I bought a book filled with solved examples and still had to google most of my homework problems. I learned more from Yahoo Answers than the lectures. Lots of double integrals and summation, so review Calc 2 and Calc 3 before you start.
His lectures are sufficient, but lack enthusiasm. He regularly makes mistakes while working problems on the board which wastes a lot of time, so you will have to read the Calc book if you want to get an A as well as attending lectures. Tests were much easier than homework. He's a fair grader & lenient with struggling students. Practice matters.
Curran continuously makes mistakes during lectures. Super hard and extensive homework assignments. plan to have 3+ hours of homework each week. But if you go to every class and do ALL your homework (trying your hardest) you can end up with an A. his grading system is the worst thing in the world!!
Dr. Curran is truly amazing when it comes to preparation for the actuarial exams. Strong math knowledge is a requirement. Those classes are not entry level and the material covered is not to be underestimated. If one is decided to follow the actuarial path however, Dr. Curran is the professor to go to!
Dr. Curran gives really difficult lectures and lots of complicated homework, especially for a beginners class. Be prepared to start the homework a week in advance if you take this class, you wont finish it otherwise. That being said, he is very willing to work with you if you need help or if something comes up and you need to make something up.
His class is really hard especially for a beginners class. He gives a lot of homework and has maybe 4 chapter tests. His grading system is weird and be prepared to work on the homework for a solid week before turning it in. That being said, he is very willing to work with you if you need help. I took honors though so a normal class might be easier
He may be a smart guy but is absolutely terrible at explaining things. Does not explain math concepts from the bottom up but rather reads theorems verbatim from the book. Also the grading system in his class is strange and unnecessary.
he is by far one of the worse teachers I have ever had to deal with and if I have taken another class with him I would rather drop out. the whole class has no idea about what is going on. he often makes mistakes in class and is hard to follow where he gets the numbers. homework takes hours, and is often was harder then it should be for the course.
Prof. Curran is possibly the worst professor I have had. His lectures are theorems pulled straight from the book with no explanation, he gets easily sidetracked, and worst of all he gets upset with the class if we don't know something. He failed to teach us some of what was on the midterm and got mad at the entire class for not knowing it. 0/10
Absolutely horrible! He doesnt explain the problems well enough, messes up what he writes all the time, and taught me absolutely nothing. He goes on tangents every day about stuff youll never need to know, puts himself on a pedestal, AND rounded my grade DOWN to a C even though I was at the minimum percent for B. Worst professor EVER! HORRIBLE
Worst teacher I have ever learned from. He is a very smart man but has no idea how to teach, if you're not interested in having to go to class then teach yourself everything from the book afterwards, don't take him. Heavy homework load and not easy to talk to at all. Most of the time when I asked questions in class I left more confused
Ended up dropping Curran's class due to changing minor but was VERY relieved to do so. The lectures and homework did not match up at all and I had to do tons of learning from the textbook, the exams were even further from the homework, and although we were able to bring a notesheet, were hard to prepare for. Curran is super smart, but class was bad
He gives you homework but doesnt grade it, he only grades the quiz, midterm, and final exam. Which really made it hard to build your grade if your decent at math. He uses a lockdown browser which allows him to see if you cheat and hear. You are also timed. Not that efficient but hopefully It gets better
Very boring lecturer and doesn't explain things well. He also gives us crazy amounts of homework and gave us TWO assignments over thanksgiving break. He also makes homework count more than quizzes for reasons I don't understand why. Do not recommend in the slightest bit.
Never prepared to lectures. Never responds to emails. Does not help students with issues and on multiple occasions treated students poorly when asking for help. Snide comments to students when asking questions. Overall not a good professor, very unorganized
The absolute worst prof Ive ever taken. No course schedule & dates change on the fly (why??)Hes obviously smart but incapable of teaching. I tried to voice concerns, got 1 sentence responses back. He put 0 effort in. 1st class Ive ever WD. Hate isnt a strong enough word. Do NOT take if you like structure, grading rubrics, or set pace. TERRIBLE.
Hey guys, I am telling you this right now. Please to save 10 years of your life do not take his class. Had him for Lin algebra. Every single lecture he makes some sort of giant mistake and does not re do most of them. He does not respond to emails at all on canvas or regular. Does not post a single grade until the end. exams are 70% of grade!
Dr. Curran is the worst combination of Dwight Schrute and Sheldon Cooper. Brilliant on his own, but has ZERO teaching skills. He is arrogant, but also very lazy (how is that even possible?). Examples are never correct and he just moves on without correcting. Skips 3 steps at a time and talks down if you ask questions. DO NOT take this professor.
He is a nice guy, but that's where the compliments end. He is passionate but incompetent as a teacher, very disorganized and he teaches from a graduate-level perspective despite it being a level 100 class. For Linear Algebra you better be good at proofs. However, he does grade on a 4.0 scale and does offer 2 extra credits that are kind of helpful.
He's a nice guy and knows his stuff, but he expects you to know too before even taking the class. The book we used was also written as if you already knew the material. The number of times I sat in his class not understanding a thing he said is ridiculous. I will never be taking one of his classes again.
The main problem with the class is the book. It's very notation-heavy; as a math major I had the motivation to sit down and digest what it was saying, but I understand that it was a nightmare for other people. The homework is time-consuming but manageable, and the exams aren't too bad. Overall, he's a nice guy and was willing to help with problems.
If you think this class will be an intro-level: think again. He teaches this class like it is a higher level class (the math tutors agreed). The book is so hard to understand and explains things in a roundabout way. He teaches lots of proofs. Only 3 exams, multiple hw assigments. Grading scale is CONFUSING. The only saving grace is the extra credit
His teaching is awful. He teaches as if we are already experts on the subject, has a ridiculous grading scale, mumbles, and is clearly always so unprepared for class. We were meant to have 3 exams but he didn't write 2 of them so 2 random hw assignments were graded as an exam. Save yourselves and don't take this class, I hated every second.
I used to like math a lot growing up, but this class made me question my ability to understand basic concepts that I learned in high school. A lot of confusing homework assignments, weird grading system, and likes to just push info during lecture rather than letting us attempt examples. Will not take one of his classes ever again.
I took STAT 170 last semester with professor Curran. I hated every minute of it. Each lecture is an hour and fifteen minutes of scribbling on the whiteboard while you scramble to write things down while still trying to listen. He barely goes over concepts and relies on you to learn through the book, which most people just Googled. Try to avoid.
If you're thinking about taking one of his courses, don't. His class was very lecture heavy and offered no explanation to anything. He will not take questions during class for further explanation or give you time to attempt problems. Awful grading scale and didn't publish any grades until after finals. Do not take him as a professor!!
Professor Curran is a great person but can be a little bad when explaining topics. You definitely want to get the textbook and teach yourself the topics before every class, it will make your life so much easier. You are only graded on a few things which sucks but he is a generous grader. He gives half credit just for explaining what you did/trying.
Dr. Curran is not organized at all. He didn't grade any of our assignments until after the semester ended! It was very frustrating. He is also very lecture-heavy and has some of the most boring lectures. Try to avoid!
The key to pass his class is to study from the book and do a bunch of practice problems. While his exams are a little harder than average he gives a lot of partial credit if you try and you can have cheat sheets on exams. If you don't have anyone else to take, don't be afraid to take him. He also is always available during office hours.
He is totally off-side. I took Elementary Linear Algebra with him. He basically didnt teach us anything because he doesnt know how to do that. Just going over stuff, without even explaining relations, connecting them. Simply computational person, whereas E.linear Algebra should be more a geometrical approach. Heavy lectures and not helpful at all!
If you are the kind of person that needs math thoroughly explained step-by-step to you, Prof. Curran is not the professor to take. Math is something that takes longer for me to understand, so I struggle alot in his class because I never learn anything. I go to class for the participation mark, but I learn by myself with the textbook.
If you wanted to pay to take an algebra class and end up having to teach yourself everything because the professor can't teach, I would recommend Professor Curran. The lectures are super vague and the quizzes are nothing like the lectures or homework. The only redeeming part of this class is that his grading scale is very forgiving.
I already struggle with math, and he did not make that easier. I had to attempt to teach myself, because he just throws terms out that he expects you to already know.
Is horrible about inputting grades. I finished the course without anything in Canvas or knowing my final's score. All he does is lecture to the chalkboard and then give occasional quizzes. His grading scale is forgiving and he seems to be a nice guy. He is just bad at teaching. Get ready to teach yourself the textbook.
cool dude but he is boring and he talks with no clear explanation of what we are talking about? like stg he didn't put in grades all semester so your final grade is gonna be a surprise and ain't nun you can do about it!!! idek how i passed. no test, no assignments, no nothing. maybe 3 assignments and a final or project.
Told us to get a book and used the book for testing/homework material, but DID NOT have the book on him during lectures.
this teacher stressed me outttt. his grading scale is funny and silly. and he doesnt know how to teach. stayaway from him. i had to drop the class too cuz he wasnt finna mess wi my gpa.
Very lecture heavy and the lectures are not helpful. He does not explain well and skips step then says you get what I did there. Didn't give much homework so you couldn't even check your understanding of the concepts (didn't understand). Had to rely on the textbook to teach me everything so basically if you take him you'll be teaching yourself.
He seems like a good guy, is responsive to messages, and knows the material. However, the entire semester we had two exams and one HW, and none were graded the whole semester. His lectures are confusing and overly procedural. I have never learned less from such dense lectures. Expect to have to learn the entire material independently.
if I could give less than a 1/5 for this professor I would. AVOID taking him at ALL COSTS extremely lecture heavy, gets sidetracked, borderline impossible to learn from him. homework online and two in person tests. doesn't put in any grades and the grading scale makes no sense
Maybe he is a nice guy, but THE MAN CANNOT TEACH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Despite the class being practically lecture-based, I learned absolutely nothing from him. I had to teach myself everything. The class was only based on 2 exams and 1 assignment, and nothing was actually graded. DO NOT expect an A in this class (bro was the downfall of my 4.0...)
Goes through the material very quickly and is not clear in explaining.
For being a gen ed math credit, this class was overly complicated. He overcomplicates simple algebra to relate it to higher level classes that students will never have to take. Doesn't teach by the book so missing class is nearly impossible and the grading scale makes no sense. Few grades are assigned so you must do well on the midterm and final.
He's a good person but it's just that he teaches as if we already know to material. It's too fast and he doesn't break it down into simpler steps. In high school I was a A+ student in mathematics but now it's a different ballgame. He doesn't give us time to process what we learned and I usually have to teach myself the material.
please DO NOT register for this instructor's class, with all due respect this individual is a nice person but can barely teach anything. You could barely understand anything taught in class. Also, there are only 2 exams which make up 70% of total grade of this class so good luck
