The best Accounting professor at Humber College
Worst Teacher , tries to be funny, want let you leave a minute early
No Comments
Very clear expectations, lots of homework, but it's good practice. John teaches you!!! He makes you understand why things are done certain ways, and if you don't understand he is more than willing to go over it till you do!!
Good Teaching techniques. Very Fair.
Good teacher
He is the result of what happens when nerds take over the world! He is a good teacher but has some weird rules! He wont let you leave class 5 seconds early!
tests are not relevant to class lectures, should be more helpful regarding calculator functions
He is the best accounting teacher ever..always willing to help..jks can be corny at times...willing to take the time to do things over and over again until you understand... gives you the basics and makes sure you understand... one of the nicest and most qualified profs...we need more john curries!!
he's a good teacher, but i didnt like the whole "teach yourself" concept. i liked the multiple choice tests though. he was alright, not the best though, although he did try to make sure everyone understood it
he is too fast paced...teaches too much material on one day...but he is also helpful...his tests are too long and the teaching your own self concept should be changed because that's why many students fail his class...they do not understand the wording of the book
This man is by far the most EXCELLENT accounting professor at Humber/Ryerson/GuelphHumber. If you're going to be taking either BACC100 or BACC200, MAKE SURE to get him as your instructor. I dare say he is the best accounting professor in Ontario; his classes R fun and students enjoy learning.
His lessons are fast paced. He picks on you alot especially when he see's that you are not paying attention. Make sure you read the book and do the daily assigned work or else you will be so lost in his class. The teaching your own self is a bad method of teaching because most students end up failing his class. He will be up your butt if you le
Some people are stupid...they assume that they shouldn't have to read the text, do any problems, and that John will take care and teach them. Wrong! John is an amazing teacher, but YOU as the student have to put some work into teaching yourself. If you have any problems, he takes them up. Very rewarding method of teaching. I absolutely Love John
Shouldnt be teaching because he doesnt teach
Terrible teacher. We need more productivity in the classroom rather than just slides and answers.
Terrible teacher, picks on you. Terrible lectures, I was just afraid to goto his class cause he was always picking on me. And his tests are crazy hard!! Avoid this guy
he's ok
Worst Teacher Ever! All he does it take up Homework, never explains anything and made our final worth some rediculous amount
Worst teacher I have ever had.. Do yourself a favor and stay away from him. If you get him switch classes immediately!!
STAY AWAY!!! He's a good prof. but if you have no accounting background...stay away from him...all he does is take up homework for three friggin hours...he expects students to learn on their own...he does not do any lectures in class....if u have any accounting background then ull be fine...other than that stay away!!!
ya...he is ok..he emphasize on doing homework daily. he is one and only teacher who put accounting exams in multiple type. just multiple no written...kinda weired....but u will see unexpectedly good marks..
so hard to understand
Absolutely the worst professor I had at humber. This is a first year accounting course and he doesn't even teach the students the course material. He advises you to read the text book and do the homework without even explaining how to do it. If you walk into this course and John Currie is your professor, RUN! He is awful.
He may be a good financial guy, but he can't teacher - plain and simple.
I HATE THIS MAN. Enough said.
this is the worst teacher i have had throught my years at humber. he doesnt teach. and all that is discussed in class is hmwk. avoid having this man as your accoutning prof.
TERRIBLE TEACHER!
He is the one of the worst teacher i ever had in my program. I drop out from his class. I told him that i am a medical student please start from basics, but he didn't. Due to of his, i have to spend 4 months more after my 6th semester, i mean to say i have to one more course. In same course now m getting +80. Must not take this teacher, in anywayyy
WOW! The worst thing many students have to say about John's class is that he expects students to learn on their own?! What's wrong with that? John's preparing us for the workforce, not preschool! This class is fine assuming you do your part by reading the chapters and doing the homework! Something he's sure to let you know from DAY ONE! Grow up!
The point of having a prof is so that he can EXPLAIN things 2 u.IF he would go through the chpts B4 hand & maybe do a few practice exercises then it would be easier 2 do the h.w. So actually explaining it properly is crucial! Something he DOESNT DO.U might as well do the class online.U cant ask him nething without him telling u 2 find out 4 urself.
he is never willing to listen and doesnt care that studdents drop the course. class started with 27 students and it ended with 11. nuff said
WORSTTTTTTTTTT teacher ever !
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Does a great job explaining material. The reason I want to get into accounting. Only a professor that pushes his students to the limit gets them to rise to the top! Excellent experience.
Had John for corporate finance as a recommendation from a friend. If you are serious and want to continue to university TAKE HIM! I'm at GH now and thankful I did. He's not easy but if you do your work and take notes of his examples you'll do well. Very difficult to learn from the text, use his notes in combination with the questions he assigns.
Mr.Currie is one of the best teachers I have ever had, he truly enjoys what he does, and encourages all of his students. His class doesn't consist of lectures, which are boring, instead he goes through the homework questions, this way the class can all participate and learn. I highly recommend Mr.Currie to anyone taking accounting.
Terrible teacher ever and too tough on assignments, for example you have not hand in one of your assignment you will be graded all ZERO for all of your other assignments.
Possibly one of the worst profs I have ever encountered thus far. Why bother making a class when majority of it is just "self-teaching"? If you don't know accounting very well, consider yourself as "failed" as he does not show any interest in helping students. Profs should teach and show students how to do certain parts before moving on.
Horrible almost failed me for no reason. Had me freaking out during X-mass holidays. I finished everything but it was because I didnt do an assignment properly. When I handed it in after the Christmas break he passed me.
He isnt that bad BUT you need to pay attention and participate. He calls people out to answer certain questions but is not rude about it. He will memorize your name very fast and wont ever forget you. He is a pretty hard marker and does not usually change his mind on a mark he gives you. what you get, is what you get. PLUS no electronics.. EVER..
He does not give enough time to do tests. That's why, when you're in his class, you need to know the material and you need to know it well. Not only that but you need to know how to use the BA II Plus calculator for all the calculations in order to be able to do all the questions within the timeframe given when it's time for the test.
You want to pass - take this teacher and do home work... He will DELIVER material, and you would NEED to practice... and PLEASE buy a text book, or do not wonder after the second test why you failed !
Had him for financial accounting 2. He doesn't teach, and expect you to know everything when you are in class. If you're someone who didn't take accounting in highschool, you're probably going to have trouble if you have him.
He's not terrible but don't expect this to be an easy A. Participate at least every now and then all you'll be in his good books the rest of the semester. For people who aren't strong in accounting (like me) you will appreciate that all his test are multiple choice! Definitely prefer guessing rather than leaving something blank!
Not a bad teacher, but expects you to know everything and do the work PRIOR to the class. His lectures are very powerful and teaches you the concept before taking up questions. Tests are ok, just the use of a Super T was confusing and especially the last part in which was a bit challenging. Overall, would recommend for future classes.
If you know the basics of accounting he is a good teacher but be ready to work for your marks. You must read the chapter before class and try the questions that are going to be covered in class before hand. He doesn't give lectures but goes over those questions and makes everyone answer questions during his class.
john currie is a funny teacher! however if you want to pass you need to read the textbook! ALL OF THE CHAPTERS don't miss class unless you know the material very well be prepare to learn on your own and he hates cell phones
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!! He teaches you things that are not practiced. Had him in the summer for 4 weeks for the introduction of accounting, when the second teacher took over she had to start completely from scratch with us because what he was teaching isn't right!!!!! The ones who have him for an entire semester go to the next class confused.
I struggled with the material but John went above and beyond to help me. He sat with me for hours after class going over my tests and any problems I had. Not many teachers really make the effort to ensure you understand the material. Take advantage of his office hours. Also gave friends chances to boost their grades to be able to pass and graduate.
Great professor, hard course material. Make sure you read and practice the assigned questions prior to class. He has OFFICE HOURS, which you should use if you are struggling. He does not use a lot of formulas, which is GREAT if you are a visual learner!!! Participate and ask questions during class for clarification.
Does not give NEARLY enough time needed to complete in class assignments
Horrible experience. Wondering why there are mixed opinions? That's because some students are okay with teaching themselves an entire course. If you are not one of these students and hope to be taught- DO NOT take this 'teacher'.
Barely any course accessible course material, makes absolutely no use of blackboard, speaks jibberish in class for those who are new to the subject, doesn't care to actually help his students that are struggling. Class time needs to be more productive- he is basically a homework taker-uper and will ask you to save your questions for his "office hrs"
I still can't believe how hard this course was for me. This professor is awful... if you want to pass BACC 152 be aware that you will have to do a lot of self study since he doesn't teach you anything. His lectures are so boring and he treats students as we were children, always picking on us. I don't recommend this professor at all.
He states that he will do ZERO lecturing... so instead he just takes up the homework every class... if you don't do it get ready to be shamed in front of the class for not knowing the answer.
The worst prof I have ever had. Doesnt teach course material, instead assigns 30 questions for homework and takes them up during class. You dont get enough time to complete the exams or in class assignments. He doesnt teach you how to use the calculator either. Extremely hard course, so if you want to pass and do well, choose another prof.
Most of the class expected him to just ''teach'', however, if you pay attention the homework questions were all relevant. Also the quizzes alone which are very easy were worth 20% of the overall grade. If you do the homework, and go to the accounting center after class and once more another day, you will pass. *just a different way of learning*
Difficult course material, doesnt teach anything. Save yourself the time and trouble, just choose another professor.
Hes a really nice person, but for someone like me who is dyslexic and has ADHD, I do not enjoy when we dont do lectures. Instead, we were given homework and to take it up during the next class. Hes a genuine person, but not the best teacher
Overall he is a nice professor but if you're not use to teaching yourself materials don't take him. He doesn't do lectures each class he takes up homework that you are assigned every week which are about 20 each week. You don't learn anything with him. And he won't help you in class only his 'office hours". Take another prof for this course.
He doesn't teach very well in class, you have to learn everything yourself. He just takes up homework and picks on people in class for the answer even if you don't know it. No cell phone use in class.
He does not lecture, but chooses to take up the homework in class. If you learn best by teaching yourself - it is possible to do well, but with great difficulty. Textbook and participation is mandatory. Allows you to go over past material if you use his office hours. Very hard teacher.
you have to teach yourself, this guy just takes up homework the whole class and randomly picks on you to answer the question, if you break one of his rules, he makes you buy timbits for the whole class. nice guy but he does not know how to teach.
Stated on the first day he doesn't do lectures.. that should have been my first clue to drop his class.... Very nice guy but terrible professor. He doesn't teach! he takes up homework and thats his whole class. Definitely pick another prof, this course is hard and its even harder when you need to teach it to yourself....
Worst teacher ever! Be prepared to learn by yourself, because he doesn't teach anything. He assigns a ridiculous amount of homework every week, which he takes it up on class. He uses most of the class time to explain the easy questions, skips the hard questions, which will be on the test. Test are extremely long, not enough time to write the test.
He is not a good teacher, because he literally does not teach. You do everything yourself and he spends 3 hours in class taking up homework. Take anyone else, I've had bad accounting professors but at least they actually taught accounting, avoid him at all costs unless you already know what you're doing and just need the credit.
He is the awful teacher that I ever had in my life. Never take this teacher again. No lectures. Even he ask the students to solve your questions by yourself or ask your classmate.
He is really bad teacher. He is very tough grader. Never take this professor.
I honestly don't know why people think he's such a great professor. He only takes up homework, if you don't know or forget something simple he won't explain it to you and he'll make you look dumb, and he teaches like you're supposed to know exactly what he means even though you read the textbook. He should at least explain how he got his answers.
Horrible.
Worst prof I have ever had. Doesn't teach. Takes up homework about things that he doesn't teach. Expects us to know things that he hasn't taught.
Honestly one of the worst professors Ive had. I had him for 3 courses and my opinion did not change. Go to the accounting centres or get a tutor if you want to pass.
Just be prepared to fail. He does all the easy work in class and when the test comes around the questions are nothing like the homework. He's the only prof for this course.
I wish there was more than 350 characters to write about professors. There is so much I could say about him. His teaching methods may help for some, but for most, it definitely doesn't work. If you can avoid taking him, do so at all costs, you will save yourself the headaches and the "beating around the bush" answers, NEVER A SIMPLE YES OR NO.
WORST
To start off I have had this prof for both BACC152 and BFIN350. He has a very different teaching style where "you" teach your-self everything and he will take up the homework. There is no lecturing or teaching. Would not recommend to anyone, switch out of his class at earliest time. No wonder he has a 1/5 rating and 20% retake rate. What a goof
Gives you a ton of homework, doesn't teach classes. Takes up homework not even lectures. DO NOT TAKE! I PROMISE YOU
He doesnt he save the recording and its a online class
Would not recommend
Would not recommend this professor at all. The previous ratings explain why. Professor Currie had accused many students of cheating with no evidence at all and when asked about marks received and for some feedback, he would just ignore you. I have had the unfortunate luck of having Mr. Currie twice in pervious courses. The worst prof ever.
I truly hope that you are reading this review, although the content of this course is difficult, you do a very good job of making it even hard and more stressful with your teachings and approach. Constructively, I hope you change your methods of teaching to not only help students, but to help yourself as well. Humber, look into this.
I had been struggling throughout the course the whole semester. I had showed up to every class , participated as well. I believe Mr. C is a nice man, but I had informed him that all I needed was to pass this course to finally graduate Humber. Unfortunate I finished with a 48%, I asked if he could increase my mark to graduate and he said "Cant".
Would not recommend this professor
Man if you want to pass this course don't even look at this professor. I had to withdraw from my course because of his strict and rude behavior. Even if any student is loyal to the course he think that he have cheated.
very bad prof, he does not help you at all to pass, do not think that the questions in the homework will be the same as the exam questions, COMPLETELY different. also he does not give you an exam review and his rules are very crazy and don't make sense, half of my class dropped out because use of his lack of help. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM.
He makes no use of blackboard and goes out of his way to make it impossible to excel. If you are scheduled to graduate do not even bother with him unless you are ready for another semester for absolutely no reason.
questionable behavior as I have never seen a prof get any fulfillment from making his students stress until now.
If you want to teach yourself accounting Mr. Currie is your man. If you actually care about your grades don't take him. He was the worst professor I ever had. Wouldnt let me review my exams to see where I went wrong. A tough teacher who shouldn't be teaching. His exams are nothing like the homework questions. Overall very bad don't take him.
A dreadful teacher who truly doesn't care about his students. I understand that the course itself is hard but having such a professor doesn't make it any more easygoing. Ended with a 48%, now just because of him I have to pay for an additional class out of my own pocket. We started with a full class of 40 students but ended with only 10!
I am not the best when it comes to numbers. I find John Currie's teaching style to be the most influential with my studies. You read the chapter, PP's, make sure you do the homework Which works. It's only difficult if you don't care to do what he says. He is a great professor!
Hands down worst professor in Ontario and possibly Canada. Good Luck.
Honestly, I don't think Humber even looks at these ratings but they don't lie. Hopefully the school can look into this situation and just speak with Mr. Currie regarding his teaching methods. Everyone wants to learn and achieve their goals with high passing grades, just seems like once you pay your tuition they can care less about what goes on.
John, in my opinion is a good professor. Everyone has their ways. To others, I can't lie, it could be irritable as he's very particular with his wording and terminology but he only wants the best for us. To pass this class, you MUST show up and ask LOTS of questions. He would help if he sees that you are keen on learning and he DOESN'T spoon feed.
Test and exams are not what you do in class so please be prepared. Even open book and cheat sheet won't help you here. He is a very tough grader.
I'd suggest that to pass this course, give yourself an allocated time for the work assigned, take advantage of his office hours for questions and clarifications, and be prepared to ask questions in class (after doing your homework of course!) to do well in this class. It's honestly the only way!
Have taken this professor for 2 semesters, 0 out of 10, would never recommend to anyone including the people I personally hate.
Difficult to understand course material
Attend all lectures if you want to pass the course
Has a problem with your phone being on the table. Ridiculous expectations and charges you money for giving you a piece of paper. Humber College needs to look into this prof because of the alarming amount of students that have the same thoughts as I do. MAKE SURE HE IS NOT YOUR PROF, BY FAR THE WORST PROF EXPERIENCE I'VE HAD.
Being a commerce student, accounting was fun for me but this professor made basic accounting hard for me, has his own dictionary, no quiz, no bonus marks, only 2 group assignments and 3 hard tests. break of 5 minutes only, repeats one thing thousand times (delivered, it is what it is). I won't recommend it to a students who is new to accounting.
Give yourself dedicated time to do the reading and complete the homework, attendance isn't mandatory but definitely recommend if you want to understand the concepts and how he wants certain answers written out. Hes very particular however is a good professor. As long as you do the work, attend and take initiative than you will do well!
Had him summer semester, only had him for the first half. Does not help and just expects you to know everything without teaching. Condescending and doesn't care to help students. If you get him, I would suggest dropping or switching. Ended with a C+ only because the professor for the second half was good at his job and explained things properly.
If you follow his lectures and do your homework properly you will def pass the course.
Dont take this class he nerver explains anything.
Horrible, just horrible. Doesn't allow phones in class as a post secondary, makes you teach yourself and is very test heavy
I had Prof. Currie for half a semester and I have to say it was one of the few times I've ever enjoyed accounting! He doesn't do much in-class teaching, but he's very helpful with questions. There's no spoon feeding so you have to come prepared, having at least looked at the material beforehand. Don't expect an easy class, but still very enjoyable!
This class is no walk in the park, but with some dedication and the help of resources like unstuck ai, you can manage. The professor expects a lot, but engaging in class and using the textbook can go a long way.
ONE OF THE WORST PROFESSORS IN THE ACCOUNTING HISTORY NEVER TAKE HIM I BEG YOU ALL. HE IS VERY SMART AND DOES THE EASY QUESTIONS IN CLASS AND IN THE ASSIGNMENTS AND VERY TOUGH QUESTIONS. THE GUY ONLY TEACHES HOMEWORK, I WENT TO HIS CLASS PAID ATTENTION, AND DID ALL THE HOMEWORK BUT GOT WORSE MARKS CUZ TESTS ARE HARD ASF. I SWEAR WHY IS A PROF
His lectures are based on taking up the homework from the previous week. Textbooks are manditory. VERY test heavy. You are basically only graded on tests which I think people would benefit from having weekly assignments to break up how heavy the tests are.
absolute worst accounting teacher. please don't waste your time taking his class. long lectures, like he waits until the last second to release everyone from class. takes attendance and doesn't allow anyone to be on their phones as grown adults. expects you to teach yourself before class??
