Dr. Gorden is a very knowledgeable and professional chemsist. At times he can be very hard to understand because of his complex knowledge of the subject. Never ask him to calculate math on the board because he easily confuses himself. Although his lectures are hard, he is an excellent and committed teacher who works well 1 on 1 with his students.
Dr. Gorden is extremely smart, but he has a lot of trouble dumbing down material to a student's level; his lectures are boring as crap and his tests are not easy. If you do the quizes and homework problems, you can get a B. He's pretty nerdy, but he will help you out.
He is very smart but it seems as if he is very used to teaching honors kids. class isn't mandatory but he takes attendance by the i-clicker and he will use that to help you with your grade. His tests are not easy but if you do the quizzes you should get a B in the class

While Dr. Gorden is extremely intelligent, he is SO scatterbrained and nearly impossible to comprehend. The only reason I succeeded in this class is because I took AP Chem last year. He is very unclear with what he expects of you, or what is going to be on the test. I would suggest to take another teacher if possible!
Only take this class w/Dr. Gorden if you have had AP Chem & already feel comfortable with the material prior to your first day. Dr. Gorden is a very intelligent man but his class is nearly impossible if you don't spend all day every day trying to teach yourself. The lectures dont help at all, hardly anything he says makes sense, & tests=impossible.
Dr. Gorden is not a very good professor for a Fundamentals class because he knows too much about Chemistry to teach students who don't have a great understanding of the material. His lectures were pointless because he went off on tangents and didn't teach, plus his notes are posted online. The quizzes and tests were hard! TAKE ANOTHER PROF FOR 1030
Class is somewhat difficult. Take the quizzes do the homework and read ahead and you should do alright. Prof. Gorden is willing to help students by study sessions and is not a prick about giving points on tests. He is very entertaining as a teacher.
I really enjoyed this class, unfortunatly I also failed it. Got along great with him, and was available for extra help all the time. If you took AP Chem and did well, you should do ok in this class. Although homework isn't manditory, it would do it, it helps with the tests. I just couldn't understand all the material for some reason.

AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed Dr. Gorden. He has a great sense of humor and has TONS of review sessions that would be to your benefit to attend. READ THE BOOK...it can save your butt before tests. As with any chemistry class, its difficult, but take advantage of study sessions and all the sudden its a little less overwhelming.
smart man... Easy to get to know if you go to his weekly review sessions or office hours. Much more helpful 1 on 1! He gives quizzes on every chapter and they count for a small percentage of your grade. He takes attendance with iclicker and you get a small grade for attendance. Reading the book and working problems is a must for an A! Good LUCK!
Dr. Gorden is so ridiculously intelligent that he can't communicate with those of us who don't have PhDs in Chemistry. He does try though and if you read the book ahead of time and do the problems he assigns you should be good. No, he doesn't spoon feed the material to you like Dr. Ring (I've had both) but his class isn't that bad.
Excellent professor. Willing to help and a generally nice guy who will go out of his way to help if you ask.
Dr. Gordon was a very helpful teacher. He wants you to understand the material so you can do well on the test. Sometimes his methods of relating are hard to understand though.
He doesn't know how to explain the material well. Even though he got better the 2nd semester I took him for honors and wrote down his notes, he still fumbled around a lot. He can't do math in front of the class and a lot of time is wasted by going back over the problem because he messed up. There needs to be a new honors chem teacher next year!
Dr. Gorden is a very nice man. However, he is very hard to understand sometimes because he is so knowledgeable. But the class isn't that hard. Go to class, read the book and work practice problems and you should be fine.
Even though his explanations are not always crystal clear, he is more than willing to go over everything again. Take advantage of his office hours and the study sessions he holds after class. I made a low A in the class and didnt really have to study that much.
Dr. Gorden is very hard to understand, he does not explain the material very well. I took very good notes and studied very hard and barely passed the first test. If you have to take this class I recomend getting someone else to explain it to you. He is not very good at teaching new things. There should be a different Honors Chem teacher.
Dr. Gorden is one of the nicest professors I've had at Auburn and is almost over-eager to help you outside of class. It helps to have prior knowledge of the subject, as his explanations of even basic subject matter are very academic, but if you have some idea what you're doing, he does a good job of presenting the material. Terrible handwriting...
We just took a test a few days ago,he was upset because 9 people made A's on it OUT OF 240.Said they should be in his honor's class! That alone tells you that he's making the test so hard that he expects noone to make an A. Dr.Gorden teaches honors classes 2 but if u plan 2 take him 4 regular, you might as well register for his honors class too.
Dr. Gordon is a great teacher. I don't know why people on here say bad things about him. He will help however long you need help in his office and made it clear that he expected you to read before coming to class. He doesn't baby the class on an elementary level. GREAT teacher and class. Tests are very hard but it prepares you for higher classes.
He is one of the nicest teachers i have ever had i love him!he is very nice and i have never had a teacher so dedicated to helping his students. if you actually show him you care it will make a difference. he is very knowledgeable. yes his tests are very hard but if they were easy you would not be prepared for the harder classes to come!!
He seems to think that we should always know what he is talking about, which gets annoying, and his tests are really hard. Class is mandatory or he will FA you. He was helpful by putting up powerpoints before classes and you always have Mastering Chemistry Homework!! Good guy, but very hard tests (and they are pretty much your only grades.)
He is a decent teacher. He was able to present the material fairly well. He was good about working problems in class rather than just spout theory. I found his first 3 tests to be pretty easy, but his final was very difficult. I never really took advantage of his office hours, but he seemed like he'd probably be pretty helpful.
The reviewer below sounds like the girl I saw when I came to ask about a clicker question. Ah well. I didn't do so hot, but in hindsight, it was really my fault. His tests are very fair, a mix of MC and calculation problems. The final was all MC, but it was very acid-base, ksp, and rate law based. Well, that's all the class is, but tough stuff
If you are a pre med student trying to get the grades to get into med school, like me STAY AWAY! I had a 4.0 before him, and I worked very hard, but made a bad grade in his class. He wont curve and his tests are very hard! Everyone walked out of the final knowing we failed it.
Dr. Gorden was my favorite teacher my freshmen year. I took him honors for both chem 1 and 2. He helped me a ton. I didnt start off to hot in his class but i worked hard and used his office hours. He expects you to study and know the material. I came out both semesters with an A. If you do your work and study this class is a piece of cake.
If you are planning on taking the MCAT someday you should take Gordon! Knowing the material is a must to do well on the exams. I got an A in his class by going to class, doing book problems before doing the MasteringChemistry homework, and studying a couple days before tests. He will say he doesn't curve.... but he does.
Gorden is AMAZING. He ended up being one of my favorite professors. I had Parish 1st semester & learned NOTHING, but Gorden helped me learn it quickly & learn the Chem II stuff also. Use his office hours! He's very helpful. Sometimes in class he confuses himself, but in his office hours he's great! Also, go to his reviews! I got an A, its possible!
Great Teacher! Study for final because it determines your grade.. He really cares about his students and want people to succeed in life not just in his class!
Dr Gorden is a combination of Bill Nye the Science Guy, and Steven Colbert. I didn't take AP chem in HS, but i took Honors Chem first semester and had a great time. He will go out of his way to help you with anything, and even gave me a few answers on the final to help me out. Just be willing to work for your grade, and you'll learn chemistry.
Good professor. My one complaint-he was disorganized. I had him for Honors Chem 1 and he was really helpful when I had questions. I came out with an A after he dropped a test grade at the end of the semester. Oh, and he even let the people who had A's "test out" of the final! Not sure he always does this. Go to his review sessions and go to class!
I had him for both honors chem courses. He's a great professor who wants you to suceed but his disorganization is frustrating. He's very helpful during office hours and gives chances to improve your average by dropping grades. He tends to get off topic and then crams materials onto tests without thorougly covering it. Still a good class, overall.
He knows chemistry, and he is very helpful during his office hours. Do all the homework and do well on the quizzes because they count as a test grade. However, you never know exactly what will be on his tests. The practice tests are not an outline for the actual tests, so just study a lot.
Took Gorden for 1117 and 1127. GET TO KNOW HIM and you will be rewarded. Go to office hours, talk to him during lab, ask questions. Read the book and you'll get an A. Don't take his study guide as anything more than helpful practice problems that MIGHT help with the test.
He really cares about his students. GO TO OFFICE HOURS IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS. He rambles a lot and strays off topic, but he is really a nice guy that wants to help. The class is relatively easy. If you do bad on a test it's not a big deal because there are so many homework and quiz grades to compensate.
Dr. Gorden is a great professor. Yes, he's tough, but it is an honors class, so you should expect it. It is, however, very possible to earn an A, assuming you go to class, do homework, study an adequate amount for the tests, etc... He is a little disorganized at times, but he's certainly willing to help you and go out of his way to help you learn.
Dr. Gorden is a very nice guy, but as a teacher he is somewhat frustrating. He gets off topic a lot and I found myself very lost during most lectures because he is somewhat disorganized. The sample tests are way easier than the actual exams, so don't be fooled. You are definitely going to have to do a lot of supplemental reading on your own.
I would not at all advise anyone to take this class who does not have a strong background in chemistry already. He does not teach, book is hard to understand. Practice tests are worthless since the tests are completely different.I would not take honors chemistry given the choice, go with regular chemistry. You will get a better grade and learn more
He is EXTREMELY difficult. Granted it was an honors class, but you HAVE to have a background in chemistry before attempting it. I squeaked out a B but for most of the class that seemed impossible. The sample tests are MUCH easier than the real things and the book is tough. I didn't really learn anything, just crammed for tests.
Difficult class. Amount of effort put into class reflects grade. I had to work hard but I made an A. Ggoes out of his way to help you do well in his class. Wants you to succeed. Get to know him and go to office hrs. TA's also help a lot. Enjoyed class. If looking for an easy out to chem, this isn't for you. But if you work, it will pay off.
Dr. Gorden is an excellent professor who knows the material extremely well and will not hesitate to help you outside of class. He can sometimes go off on tangents, but he will always cover the material with you.
Best to have a background in chemistry before taking this , but if you're confused, going to office hours helps. Extremely approachable and always encourages students to come by. Tells really interesting stories; I had him at 8:00 but never wanted to skip. Class isn't mandatory but you pretty much fail if you skip a lot
Great teacher! But he rambles a little bit, if he doesn't write it down it's probably not on the test. He only teaches honors, so don't take his class if you don't like chemistry. The lab with this class has written lab reports instead of online questions.
Not for the slackers, but if you want to learn Chem, take this class. Be prepared to work for your grade. It is do-able. Dr Gorden is very helpful and approachable, but his class is not at all easy. He knows his stuff and has a good sense of humor. The class was enjoyable overall and the honors lab was much better than standard lab.
HARD. Yes, he is very hard, but he is a great professor. If you actually want to learn a lot about Chemistry, take him. If you just need it for core, then you have no business taking honors chemistry anyway. If you work hard, go to office hours, go to class, then you can make a decent grade. But, you HAVE TO START OUT WORKING HARD!
Dr. Gorden is a little hard to understand in class (and I took 2 years of chemistry in high school), but if you approach him during office hours he will help you with anything. There is a lot of homework, but the online program gives you plenty of chances to get it right. If you make good grades on the tests, he lets you exempt the final.
Dr. Gorden is very helpful and has an abundance of office hours. This is good because he can get over technical in class and be hard to understand. But if you are prepared to work hard, do all the homework , read the textbook, go ask questions, then you can make a good grade in his class. If you don't like chemistry, i wouldn't recommend honors.
Great professor.I'm an Electrical Engineering major and got an A in the class. If you're willing to work and study hard, you'll do well. There's truly an abundance of out-of-class help available, so there's no reason to not be able to do as well as you want.He really wants you to understand it.He's pretty funny, without even trying most of the time.
Challenging class, but not too challenging. Gorden is great, very helpful. You get out what you put in.
HARD!!!!!! but still a great prof.
This class is hard. Study the old tests given by him. Great Prof though. Better than regular gen chem class!!
Best prof ever!!! I wish he taught all my chem classes.
He is very smart and funny, but his tests can be difficult. Also, he is hard to understand at times. If you aren't very strong in chemistry, do not take him! Honors Chem is no joke!!
Love Dr. Gorden. He really knows his students and if you take the time to go to him he appreciates you and will be a much bigger help. He is able to make things more understanding if you go to him. Phenomenal teacher. Tests are hard but do Webassign and you'll do ten times better!
Dr. Gorden is one of my favorite professors. His lectures can be somewhat difficult to follow sometimes, but he is always very helpful. I would definitely recommend using the book a lot for his class. Plus he is pretty funny.
Lectures are hard to follow, but he is very, very helpful. Go to his office hours if you need help. Tests are not easy, but with work and time it is very possible to get an A. Don't procrastinate on homework, though, because it is long and hard. Don't take unless you already have a strong background in chemistry.
His class was supper hard. I do not recommend him at all. His lectures do not stay on topic 99.9% of the time. He is always rambling on about something unrelated to chemistry. Then his exams are impossible! Every time I went to offices hours to get help he would always end up telling me I am stupid. If it wasn't for my lab TAs I would have failed.
I was an anomaly in this class, because I am not an engineering or a chem major, and I loathe Chemistry. Dr. Gorden is the ONLY reason I made an A first semester and a B second; his lectures are always entertaining, and he goes out of his way to help you understand the topics. Seriously one of the best professors at Auburn.
Dr. Gorden seems like a great guy, but unless you are good at chemistry, this class is tough. Don't take it if you didn't have AP chem in high school. His lectures are hard to take notes on so his tests are difficult to study for and very very hard. Sometimes he doesn't hide his emotions very well and you can tell he thinks a question is stupid.
Think hard before taking this class. This class requires your full attention and TONS of outside reading/work. Office hours are a must, but he does more lecturing than actually helping. This class is doable but is extremely stressful, and I am giving it everything I've got and am still barely borderline A/B. Lab is so time consuming. Hardest class.
His class is definitely not for those outside of stem majors. Definitely my hardest class, but he has been very helpful in his office hours. However, if you go to the office hours right before the test and ask the same question multiple times he will get frustrated. In that situation he expects you to have come earlier than right before a test.
Terrible lecturer. He gives useless notes and skips over all fundamental material (expect to be teaching it to yourself). He never stays on topic. Test are impossible. Lab is also very demanding. His class is very time consuming in which you NEED to read the book and do the ALEKS homework (very annoying program). Expect to be teaching yourself.
Such a nice guy, but the class is ridiculously hard. Do not, I repeat, do not take it if it isn't explicitly required for your major. I took it as a business major because I wanted a challenge, and it ruined my chances at a 4.0. Expect to read/work 10 hours a week. He really does care about his students' success, though. Be prepared for a challenge
Dr.Gorden is a fantastic teacher, but this is a very difficult class. I, by the Grace of God, came out with an A. This paired with the lab were the most stressful classes I have even taken, but I learned more about chemistry in such a short time than I would have imagined.
He's a genius and its obvious from the second you meet him, but he does a great job of teaching at the level of the class. He genuinely loves chemistry and teaching and he will talk to you for hours if you go to his office hours. Literally, I spent 2 and a half hours on a Friday because he's so much fun to talk to. Definitely recommend
I LOVE Dr. Gorden. I almost never studied and never read the text book an easily ended up with an A first semester and a B second. I would spend hours in his office talking about nothing in particular because he is such a great guy. He really cares about his students. I would not hesitate to take again.
I had AP Chemistry in high school, but still struggled a little in this class. The tests are challenging, but Dr. Gorden is a great teacher and a great guy. He brings a lot of energy to class, and his examples are always interesting. You will be furious when you compare your test to chem 1030's test but it is worth it. Learned a lot.
This class was taught in an a-typical way, so there was a lot to get used to. The class is tough, but Dr. Gorden is fair and willing to work with the students to help. Overall, he's a good guy and a good teacher.
He's crazy smart, and you can tell just from talking to him. He wants students to succeed but will not give you anything you don't earn: blood, sweat, and tears. Passed the AP Chem exam and still worked my butt off for a high B. However, it's worth it. Great professor.
Dr. Gorden went way more in depth than the regular Gen. Chem class, but you also learned much more than you would with any other professor. His tests are really tough (and often graded even tougher), but they are fair and it is certainly possible to get an A. He is really fun to talk to on just about any subject. Highly recommended.
he is absolutely adorable. he makes learning chemistry not so boring and keeps me interested. he's super goofy
Really smart, really nice. Definitely offers as much help as he can. He gives test reviews a week before exams which are awesome and extremely casual. Only down side: the class was so big, there wasn't much one-on-one opportunity during lecture. But you can bring any question to his office hours or after class.
Gorden is super smart and completely understands what he's doing; therefore, he doesn't seem to really understand that it doesn't click for everyone. He oversimplifies topics then hits you with it over the test. He's always there to help you though. Hardest chemistry teacher I've taken/heard of, but also helpful.
In a large group setting it is hard to understand the material and hard to stay focused in his class, and I found myself surfing the web in the middle of class. So I started going to office hours and he is a lot easier to learn from in a small group setting. SI is also really helpful for this class so I recommend going to as many as possible.
Dr. Gorden is an excellent professor. He helps a lot and is very clear and concise in his grading. If you go to class and take notes on what he says verbally along with the powerpoint you will do fine. SIs is recommended highly. Get ready to do ALEKS for the rest of the year. The entire Pie has to be completed along with meeting your objectives.
Gorden know a lot about this subject and you can tell he really loves it. He frequently gets off subject and goes really deep into topics, but questions from random subjects aren't on the test. You can tell what he enjoys talking about more and can expect those questions on the tests. His tests reviews are very helpful. Overall great teacher.
Dr. Gorden is an awesome professor. He is extremely helpful if you go to his office hours. The tests are very straightforward if you attend class, spend time with the material outside class, and even attend an SI session or two. Easy A if you put in the work.
Dr. Gorden is an excellent teacher. The class was pretty hard for me because I just wasn't good at chemistry but Dr. Gorden helped me every step of the way in the class. Go to his office hours and ask him for help if you're struggling and he will help you out however he can. Do your ALEKS too, it helps you out a bit for your overall grade.
No Mercy, don't expect extra credit or grade curves.
OFFICE HOURS SAVED MY GRADE. He's not the best lecturer but take specific questions for him to his office and he is more than willing to make sure you understand everything. I came out with a B after the final but since I was in his office almost every week I emailed and asked for the extra points and he bumped me to an A. Very difficult subject
Funny guy and very approachable. I personally don't like the way he lectures- it seems like he expects everyone to have taken AP Chem. Pre-class quizzes before almost every class but he waits until the last minute to post them on canvas. He gives you work sheets in class which are super helpful, buts its hard to know what to expect on his tests.
Dr. Gorden keeps his lectures interesting, but I feel like they don't thoroughly cover a lot of the material. Get ready to dedicate time teaching yourself via the book and Aleks. He is friendly and helpful in class, but belittling in office hours. He gives some helpful resources on canvas. Pre-class quizes he puts on canvas randomly and last minute
Dr. Gorden clearly knows the material; however, he fails to clearly convey it to the class. He commonly veers from the material and provides shallow answers to questions. He confuses challenging topics and incorrectly works problems at times in class. Be prepared to learn via textbook and SI. While his tests aren't hard, I never felt prepared.
Cool guy who loves chem but his lectures don't even begin to cover a lot of the material on the tests. Its hard to figure out what you should even study for the test because he just kind of throws material at you without thoroughly explaining. You have to read the book & dedicate a lot of time to this class. Aced chem1 but struggled in chem2.
Best general chemistry professor at Auburn next to Dr. Curtiss. The class is hard; it's not a liberal arts class, you'll have to work for it. However, Dr. Gorden is more then willing to help during office hours. You can't just show up to class and learn everything from lecture because of the amount of material. Comprehend instead of memorize.
He is a terrible teacher. Yes he knows the material, but he doesn't know how to teach it. The test are out of left field, he doesn't give study guides, and he doesn't curve at all. He degrades you as students, belittles you, and doesn't care. He assigns 21 topics in Aleks to do within a week with no extensions. Do not take!!!
Absolutely terrible teacher. Have fun. If you value your GPA, don't take this teacher. He is awful.
If you can help it I definitely would NOT take Gordon. He's one of the harder Chem 2 teachers and is an awful lecturer. I learned absolutely nothing from his class I had to learn it all from the textbook. His tests also make no sense because he makes them himself last minute and they are extremely hard. He doesn't care about his students at all.
Dr. Gorden is really knowledgeable, but his lectures go too far into detail on little things, so you don't always cover all the information needed for the tests. TESTS COME FROM TEXTBOOK MATERIAL, and there is a ton of ALEKS. Good class, great teacher, and I learned a lot, but it was very difficult to maintain a good grade.
If you want an A, you need to do the reading before class and pay attention. study a ton for the first tests because it is much harder than you think it will be. he is a good teacher but doesn't care about his students a lot. no conceptual questions on tests, mostly calculating. Aleks is a great way to prepare for tests. wksheets 4 attendance
Dr. Gorden is extremely smart, and it is evident in his lectures because he can talk over your head sometimes. Powerpoints are not helpful and lectures are not that informative. Gives worksheets in lecutres sometimes that help and count for participation so you need to go. Exams are very hard but if you do aleks and go to class you will be fine.
Chemistry has never made much sense to me until Gorden's class. It is a lot of work and reading but it is worth it if you want to really learn Chem. It is so beyond helpful to go to office hours and the study sessions are pure gold. Just whatever you do don't ride your bike to class without a helmet on test day.
He was super easy to understand & his lectures were great. He also gave great handouts. But if you don't read the textbook thoroughly & study HARD for the test, you will not do well. He really likes students who build a personal relationship with him, but will not give you extra credit pretty much for anything, but I 10/10 would take him again.
very difficult class. lectures cover the material, but you'll need to self teach yourself most of the class.
Never have I had a professor expect me to teach myself chemistry. He gives you ridiculously hard "Pre-class quizzes" that are on content that he has not yet taught! You are expected to be able to master concepts that you've never seen before in order to do well on the quizzes before you get to class. Why go to class then? DO NOT TAKE GORDEN'S 1030!
Gorden's lectures aren't relevant to the test material because he gets sidetracked and starts talking about more advanced chemistry. He's very helpful in his office hours and also gives a good amount of credit towards class participation and Aleks, so you can easily bring your grade up if your tests aren't the highest.
ALEKS, haven't heard of it yet? You will if you take Gorden. Expects you to do homework reading, and tests are very similar to book problems and ALEKS problems. Attendance is mandatory, but Dr. Gorden is a great lecturer. Very engaging and helpful in class. Electric geometry? Time for balloons! Lectures are great, but lots of reading.
Best teacher I have had at Auburn so far. I signed up for his 8 am lecture for chem2 just to have him again. He really loves what he does and explains material very well. If you are having trouble, he is very helpful during office hours. I really recommend him!!
I absolutely loved Dr. Gorden. He is an amazing teacher and although I did not receive an A or B in the class I learned a lot. He really appreciates students who attend office hours and those are usually the times when he is most helpful. I wish i could take him for Chem 2.
Dr. Gorden makes it clear that he loves his job. His lectures are interesting and engaging. He loves when his students visit him during office hours. Always willing to help his students. Worked really hard for an 82 in the class.
He knows a lot about chemistry, sometimes too much to explain the easy stuff well, but overall a clear, straight forward teacher. No complaints.
Great lectures with lots of stories to connect the information to. Lots of ALEKS homework. Read the book before class.
Do not take him. Does not respond to emails, even when put on high importance! However, if you get him be prepared to teach yourself. The lecture is nothing like what will be on the extremely long exams! ALEKS will help some, but not enough...
I personally loved Dr. Gorden. Now thats not saying that I did not work my butt off for my A because I did but he is extremely helpful. Takes attendance randomly and assigns a lot of Aleks but its really to your benefit to do it. Raised my grade up tremendously. He loves students that go to office hours so go to them! Read the book helps a lot!
Gorden's alright. Sometimes he doesn't know how to do the math that he is supposed to be teaching us. Tests are hard - but all chemistry is going to be challenging. You will need to study a ton to get a B.
He's an alright chem 1 teacher. Go to his office hours and the SI sessions and get help because you will need it.
I loved Dr. Gorden as a person, but his class was pretty tough. The lectures are interesting and he's always cracking jokes, but if you actually want to learn how to do anything you'll have to teach yourself or go to lots of SI sessions.
Dr. Gorden is a very fair professor. Study old exams and go to EVERY SI session. I learned everything from SI and not much from class. Go to Dr. Gorden's office hours and make sure he knows who you are. He is a very friendly man and he actually cares about his students, unlike many other professors. I would take him over any other Chem 1 professor!
Dr. Gorden is an amazing chemistry professor. I took AP Chem and got a 102 on the first test. The second test is a little harder and the third one is okay. He likes to get off topic and tell stories and jokes. Fridays the class is split into groups and it's more of a worksheet day with the TAs. Definitely would take Gorden again.
He's very nice but intimidating. Office hours great
You have to teach yourself. I didn't get much from class ever but I went so he would see that I put in the effort. Wish I had taken fundamentals instead
Really great guy but doesn't really teach the material in lectures because he always gets off on tangents. Clearly loves his job and cares, loves when people go to office hours
This is a teach yourself everything class. Great guy, but his class was way too difficult considering he barely taught actual testable material. Hes very caring but he will also not hesitate to test you on material he has never spoken a word about. Final had no study guide or idea as to whats on it, took 3 hours and extremely difficult.
When taking a course with him, just be prepared to teach yourself everything. Much of his lectures were off topic and scattered. He's not a bad guy at all! If you talk to him he clearly cares about his students. He just gets off topic really easily. His teaching style changed after every exam but neither of the different styles helped me do better.
If you haven't had at least AP Chem before, you have basically no hope of getting an A. He has cool stories, but they aren't appreciated in the days before a test. Also, he doesn't respond to emails. With that, he's a GENIUS and super funny, just not a very good teacher. Be prepared to teach yourself from the book and go to SI sessions.
Nice guy but his lectures aren't worth going to since youre probably going to have to teach yourself everything. Not a hard class as long as you put in a little work
Good guy but I did not get much from his lectures. Taught myself everything from youtube, textbook, and ALEKS. He scales at the end which is nice but it was very annoying going to class and not learning anything. He is incredibly intelligent and has trouble simplifying.
You probably won't get much from the lectures, and the quizzes go over topics that he hasn't taught and aren't in the book, but he is a nice guy, he's just a lot smarter than me and has a hard time simplifying things to understandability.
If you have not taken en extensive amount of chemistry then this class will be difficult. He does not work problems correctly in class ever. The exams can be overly difficult and too long. His lectures do not pertain to what is on the exam . The first exam is easy compared to the 2nd and 3rd. The third exam really gets you. Do ALEKS.
Do not take his class if you can avoid it. A lot of the times he works the in class examples wrong and some of his answer keys to the practice worksheets are also wrong. His tests are extremely difficult, especially if you did not take AP chem in high school. Get ready to teach yourself most of the information from khan academy or youtube.
He really makes you work for your grade, doing the reading before class and doing all of your Aleks is helpful because he will spend the entire class telling a story and doing one problem, so make sure you're prepared to teach yourself most of the information. it's definitely possible to get a decent grade, especially if you did well in chem 1
Not a great teacher. His lecture is pretty much worthless, but you have to go for the clicker questions. He will spend several classes on one topic and then ask only one question about it on the test. Nice guy, but don't recommend him.
His tests don't cover anything he taught in class. He talks about the same random things that don't matter, then requires you to learn off of Aleks, which you have to complete the whole pie for points. Lecture is also pointless, and if you don't drop, you get full Clicker Points. His tests are hard and his advice isn't helpful. Don't take him ever!
His lectures are pointless and he tests on concepts that he does not cover in class. You have to try to teach yourself through Aleks and the textbook, neither of which are much help. Aleks takes up a lot of your time outside of class and you have to complete the whole pie to get full points. Easy clicker points given in class. Do not take him.
If you want to do well in his class you need to teach yourself. He tends to get very off topic during his lectures. He began the semester by using iClicker for attendance, but towards the end he did not take attendance and gave everyone 100 for it. Also at the end of the semester he changed his grading scale where a 75-85 is a B and 85+ is an A.
Dr. Gorden is a good guy, but the material is so difficult and hard to understand. The tests were all extremely difficult and there was no curving. He is probably one of the better Chem teachers at Auburn since there are so very few.
I had him when we switched from in-class to online due to COVID-19. Both ways I struggled with him. He jumps around when teaching and skips over steps in problems when doing them, making it hard for those seeing it for the first time to understand how he got the answer. He gives practice worksheets but will go over 2 of the 10 confusing questions.
I ended up withdrawing from this class to save my GPA. I thought I was good at chem until I took his class. Pay attention and do all the ALEKS, sometimes he will push the due date back to help, that's about as lenient he will get with anything. He also takes attendance on iClicker every class.
CHEM 1040 is not an easy class, but Dr. Gorden is very good at explaining, although he gets off topic at times. As long as you study at least 3 days before a test, you will be fine. Lots of people talk bad about Gorden but he does what he can with the material. ALEKS is harder in CHEM 1040 but not impossible. Just don't get behind.
This class combined with this teacher make the course impossible. Not only does he get off topic a lot, he does not work to help students. He is extremely unaccommodating and has made our lives harder as a result of the stay at home order due to COVID-19. The amount of busy work that is given is unacceptable. The tests are even more so.
Chemistry is a difficult class, but Dr. Gorden does his best to help you succeed and gives you all the resources that you need to do well. However, it still takes work (like in any class) to do well. Anyone who thinks he is a terrible professor likely didn't utilize everything he gave us. Use his website resources and read the textbook to do well.
Those that rate Dr. Gorden poorly do not take advantage of all the opportunities that he provides for his students to succeed. He has high expectations, is passionate about chemistry, and works really hard for his students. That being said, he is not sympathetic to those who aren't also willing to put in the work. Best gen chem professor at Auburn.
His lectures weren't the easiest to follow, but he is very knowledgeable. Go to office hours. Stay on top of ALEKS and use it to teach yourself the math. However, be prepared for exam questions that are worded differently than on ALEKS. Make sure you actually know the material and practice with problems in the textbook. Every exam grade counts.
Very hard class (as expected). Dr. Gorden was the most unhelpful teacher I had during the online transition. He is unsympathetic to his students and will not admit when he makes a mistake. You have to use youtube videos and the textbook to teach yourself because he is awful at explaining anything and makes frequent mistakes. No mutual respect
Dr. Gorden Is a terrible teacher. Where he does well in explaining concepts he severely lacks in teaching math behind chemistry. He teaches at an advanced pace and is very confusing. During the transition, his classes transitioned from teaching in lecture form to Q and A on zoom. He adores the "teach yourself and good luck" attitude. don't take him
Anyone who rates Dr. G low didnt take advantage of his many opportunities for help. Easily the most accessible professor Ive ever had. He cares so much and is a talented teacher. His stories and analogies he uses help so much. His tests arent easy, and you will work for your grade. He is by far the best available for preparing for higher chem.
