he isn't too bad, kinda of scatter brained sometimes, also tucks his shirt into his underwear. the work is fairly easy
Very fun class to be in. He knew his stuff and he worked in the real world before teaching, so you learn valuable information and he grades your work like he's your boss, so it's actually worthwhile.
I think the class sucked. He made you use SAS but didn't explain how to do it
This dude is horrible, i dont think he taught me anything!
Assignments aren't too long. Tests are very relevant to what is learned. He grades fairly, and he is a very motivated teacher. Very organized. Best math teacher I've had here so far.
He is a really nice guy. Clearly explains things and doesn't mind helping you. The homework and tests are hard though, so be ready to study. He is a good teacher!
He is a very good teacher, perfect for this class. He is so helpful in answering questions at his office, or email. He grades PROMPTLY and FAIRLY. He tends to tuck his shirt into his underwear, so be prepared to laugh.
Not very impressed with him. I barely went to class and did better than most on the homework and stuff. He gives nine thousand examples of the same thing. Kind of seems like he's too pompous.
He's a good teacher. Sticks to the lesson plan. Willing to drop what he is doing and answer any questions.
Best Math prof i've ever had, perhaps my best prof ever. He's clear and helpful. He offers a ton of help outside of class if needed. Sometimes he tucks his shirt into his underwear. I RECOMMEND HIM!!!!!
Your typical nerdy math teacher who will occasionally tuck his shirt into his underwear, however, very friendly and helpful guy. DO VISIT HIS OFFICE HOURS FOR HELP OR SUGGESTIONS HE IS VERY WILLING TO LISTEN
He is a good teacher. Homeworks not hard the tests are kinda tough. And he has quizzes every friday so be prepared. Is very helpful and energetic.
Teaches by powerpoint notes you get off of blackboard. Bought $106.75 book and haven't even opened it! Gives out a h/w sheet a week with 5 m.choice ?s. There is a quiz every Friday. They are too bad & test are hard. I feel his teaching could improve. He doesn't ever really do the math. But can pass.
All I have to say is this class is hard, and DON'T BUY THE BOOK!! He's good but makes you feel dumb for asking question. It's like he gets it and thats all that matters... Good Luck! And he wears the same thing every class (be ready for a good laugh)
Helpful and friendly. Visit his office hours if you have questions.
This class was way harder than i thought. will spend one class period on one example and give you weird looks if you ask a question. purposely gives quizzes every friday to make sure you come and there's ALWAYS homework. should've been an easy class, but he seemed to make it harder
One of the best profs here. As long as you show up and take notes, you should do fine.
This prof is the loud & obnoxious type. He does an okay job of teaching, I just dont like him. Quizzes are every Friday to get you to come and although exams are only 25 ?'s they are HARD. Bought the $100 book for no reason, never once opened it bcuz he does powerpoint and makes up his own homework
jerk, you ask him a question and all you get is a smart ass comment back half of the time, tests are hard, overall the class can be easy because on the syllabus he lays everything out for the whole semester but in general just a dick ... and he weres the same thing to class everyday
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. I actually tried in this class, but the teacher just dosn't teach! I was always around the class average, which is ok until that average is a 70%. I would strongly urge you not to take this teacher, unless you absolutely have to!!!
He was not as bad as decribed in some of the comments. He was very helpful during office hours.
Daniels is a crazy guy who tucks his shirt into his underwear. He is very mean too. Don't ever ask for help because he will give you a jerk response. This class is tough and hard to understand. The tests are hard and you have to come everyday to pass. Quizzes EVERY FRIDAY!!!
He knows his stuff, but can be very unrelational when students ask questions. Sometimes he can make you feel like and idiot. Quizes each week, and make sure you are in class every day. Tests are very hard and worded differently from that of whats taught in class
Dr. Daniels is an amazing teacher long as you attend class and take his notes, which by the way are extremely helpful for tests. I'd highly suggest him even with the bad comments that he has. I think they are the people who don't want to put alittle effort into class or don't show up.
This class is super easy. Don't buy the book, as I have yet to use it. Puts notes on blackboard, so going to class is a waste of time. Kind of a jerk when people ask questions, he acts like you should know what he's talking about.
I'm not sure if it was him or the material, but this class made me reconsider my minor in Statistics. He doesn't exactly teach, he just writes formulas on the board and expects you to learn on your own how and when to apply them. Only take this class if you're good at learning things on your own.
Great teacher. The class is pretty fun he gives a quiz almost every week but they are only 5 questions on black board very easy. Not much homework. Tests can be a little challenging but not to bad and if you do well on everything else they your grade will be padded by the hundreds of other points go to class and pay attention you'll get an A.
if your going to take STA 282 I would go out of your way to take him* Everything is on Powerpoint and he gives some extra credit. Make sure you go to class and take notes and you will be fine. Gives online quizes which are worth 15 points. Everything is on MINITAB!! The man loves MINITAB!!
The class was easy. he is not that great of a teacher but the way the classs is structured he does not need to be. All quizes are through blackboard and the exams are fairly easy.
Total JERK!!! Don't bother going to his office hours, he'll just tell you you're a retard. Teaches on the computer, if Bblackboard isn't working you're outta luck and getting a zero. Better have a computer of plan on walking to Pearce to use Minitab. Avoid at any cost.

Easy class. He is fair about makeups if you explain why you missed a quiz. Pretty clear in lecture, all quizes are online.
He was pretty good. Sometimes tried to hard to explain. Take him.
An overall easy class he presents the material clearly. There are 11 quizes which you take on blackboard outisde of class, you have 60 minutes to do them and they are only 5 questions multiple choice. The homework takes 30 minutes at most per assignment and they are only once a week. He also drops you lowest quiz and assignment.
not bad...he seems kinda cocky sometimes...but its easy to understand. DON'T BUY THE BOOK...just show up to all of the classes
He seemed like a good guy at first. He gave me the wrong access code for our online book and got mad at me about it and wrote me an evil e-mail. He is extremely rude and not a good representation to Central's math department. I would advise no one to take his class, espicially if you actually want to be treated like an adult.
He is willing to explain any problem you have questions with. He sometimes gave the class attitude about some of the questions and occassionally made some people feel stupid. I would try to take this class with a different professor.

not a nice man...
He really wasn't bad at all. The class was not that difficult, and he didn't assign many homework problems. Only about 5 per section. Also, quizzes weren't hard and he was understanding about grade changes and problems with working out questions. I'd give him four of five stars.
Cool guy. Just likes to talk a lot. That can get very annoying at times. He'll help you if your not a slaker. A- and I hate math with a passion after taking it twice
This class was easy the homework was simple he quizs are on blackboard and the exams are easy if you just do the homework and quizzes
I really like him. He's so nice and talkative, but you also learn a lot. The class isn't too bad, just do your quizzes and homework and you'll be fine on the tests.
He's a fair, pretty cool guy. He does a good job explaining the material- go to class, take notes and you will atleast get a B if you have a brain
He was talkative & sometimes annoying, but he was helpful. The class was not too hard. I attended all classes and spent less than 1 hour per week doing homework and studying. I did great. Take him.
This class is difficult if you aren't good at math but Professor Daniels is really willing to help you as long as you try. If you pay good attention, ask for help when you need it and do your homework and quizzes you will do well. There is a quiz per week online and you can take it as many times as you want till you get it right.
Easy class the homeworks is really simple the quizes are all on blackboard and you dont use the book at all. As long as you have a semi decent understanding of the material the tests arent that hard. he isnt that helpful though he is actually kind of annoying. easy grade though would recommend him
Very tough class. Goes through slides quickly and concepts aren't the easiest to comprehend. EC quizes everyday are nice and very helpful by the end of the semester. Nice, fair guy, is willing to adapt if things don't go as planned. My advice, read through powerpoint notes before class.
I heard from other classmates that he was rude and not understanding at all. He tucks his shirt in his underwear, needs to properly dress himself. His teaching is all right.
Its an easy class but he is kind of rude. Makes you feel really stupid if u ask a question. I think he favors guys over girls. Gives extra credit though everyday and you wont have a problem hearing him!
He is a horrible professor, don't take him. All of the work is done with mini tab.....which just adds the confusion going on in the class. He talks really fast and when he is going through his power point slides. He has a way of making you feel really stupid for asking questions. Just wait for another class, leave this guy alone!
WOW, THIS GUY IS REALLY RUDE!I thought that i had a smart mouth. but wow! I mean even in his emails there is a tone. Awful instructor, bad personality. (AND NO! FOR THOSE WHO ARE WONDERING I'M NOT SAYING THIS OUT OF SPITE; I PASSED THE CLASS WITH A B-.)
Class is hard I heard 580 is harder though. Spent HOURS on each homework assignment and sometimes didn't do well. I went and asked for help, good luck asking the day before the due date even though I was busy on my other 5 classes. TAKE GOOD NOTES and fit all that you can on your notes for the test. Thats the only thing that helped me get an A-.
Excellent class. you will not need the text book at all... first day of the class he drops it on the floor meaning he thinks nothing of it. effective proffesor
This teacher is horrible! He is honestly the rudest teacher I've ever had. He isn't nice when you ask questions and he will make you feel stupid. You better hope you understand EVERYTHING because visiting him during office hours is useless. If you take his class, you will regret it! I sure do!
Super easy class! its all online and didnt use a book. Never went to class and just did the hw and showed up for the 2 exams and passed with flying colors. Super easy gives alot of hints
Very good, this is the 2nd time I have taken MTH 105, and the first time with this teacher. He is better at teaching then the first one I had. As the other comments say he can be harsh if you as a question, but he will go over it with you until you know how to do it. I would have him again as a teacher.
He was a good professor. i took him in the summer, and he passed me with a C even though I only had a 68%. What a nice guy, he totally saved my ass!
not a good teacher
Daniels is kind of mean, he blows through everything. Average grade of class was like a C and doesn't curve. Doesn't teach a lot relies on the internet
Excellent prof, very organized and presented complex topics using simple analogies. For those who said he's kind of mean...he's kind of direct and to the point which can be easily mistaken as someone being mean.
Great guy. Show up to class, and study hard and you will do fine. Dr. Daniels will bend over backwards for you if you are willing to try hard in his class. Any one who gives him a bad report probably didn't show up for class and then in the last week complained to him about their grade....Great teacher
Dr Daniels does a really good job teaching the course, if you show up to class and pay attention you should be fine. The cool thing about Daniels is that he has a lot of real world experience and teaches in a really practical manner. He taught me how to calculate gas mileage really accurately. Great prof.
Dr. Daniels is a very good professor. The only bad thing is he teaches a class that students take only because they have to. The class is not the easiest but Dr. Daniels explains it well. He gives extra credit for every day you attend. He is a cool guy and will help you. If you show up, pay attention, and ask for help you should be fine.
I actually enjoy learning and want to learn new things. Mr Daniels however does not care if you understand the material. He completely looses the entire class with his lectures and rants on and on about the information we arent understanding. Worst teacher I have ever taken.
If you want to learn the materials in really practical way, he is the best. I enjoyed this class very well. Understood materials well. Awesome, teaching method. no boring at all in class.
Worst class I've ever taken. Totally rude and not helpful. I'm a straight A student and got a C in his class. Do not recommend.
Not very Helpful. Self taught course! Very smart mouth. Talks down to you and makes you feel stupid for not understanding. Get a tutor if you take him!
Worst professor yet at CMU. He's a smart man but doesn't know how to teach. HW assignments are hard and irrelevant to tests. And tests are impossible to pass. Just horrible.
Explains things really well in class, however, makes exams very difficult and assignments even more so. Makes you feel stupid and belittles you if you have questions. Great for stat majors, but if you are just taking this as your stat requirement for the masters program in MATH, I would look for a different course, or at least a different teacher.
Decent teacher, just make sure you show up to class and study the powerpoints after/before class. He uses minitab so you pretty much just have the computer do the calculations for you.
Stats itself was a difficult course for me. This is my second time taking it, and my first time with him as a professor. He is a far better teacher than my last prof. He is usually quick on emails, and is more than happy to help you with assignments. For an online class he was probably one of my best professors.
His assignments are time consuming, but he is very clear about what he wants. If you ever have any questions, go see him during office hours. He's eager to help students who want help, and can clarify whatever you want. If you have to take stats, take it with him.
I had a chance to take STA580 from John Daniels which was the first class here at central which actually was a BlackBox but if you are good at maths Daniels would make you do the best here apparently which didn't happen to me.
Nice guy, and it was very helpful that if you didn't miss more than 4 classes a semester, he gave you 50 points at the end of the semester (bringing my grade up bigtime). Stats itself is a hard class, so show up and you won't struggle too much if you're good at math. Doesn't require text for STA282QR
Dr. Daniels is very knowledgeable. However, he is also condescending. I did well in the course, but I hate how he treats me and other students. Never had such a rude prof in my life until Daniels.
Excellent lecturer. Very few things that aren't explained, especially for an online course. However, if you do happen to misunderstand something, be prepared to receive an incredibly rude response. I don't think he means to be rude because he's actually a nice guy, I think he's just awkward and doesn't realize how to be respectful to his students.
He is always willing to answer any questions you have, but he can be very condescending if he thinks your question is stupid. If you can get past his attitude, the class should be pretty easy. He's very organized and the class finishes a week early.
Daniels' lectures are entirely based from PowerPoint and he puts them online as well. This makes it very tempting to skip class, but DON'T SKIP CLASS! At the end of the semester, he offers 50 extra credit points if you miss less than 4 days of class, AND he offers 1 point of extra credit every day you show up. He can be rude, but you'll pass easily
Knowledgeable guy who teaches subject well. But major letdown is his demeaning attitude when posed with doubts. He literally mocks at you and makes you feel stupid! 99% times you would hear only "Go look at the handout/ I told this in class". If you can bear with this cons and random stories on Lions, you would enjoy his teaching of STA580
Although the assignments & exams were very straightforward & a lot of extra credit is offered if you attended class, he was the most arrogant & rude professor I have ever had at CMU. Don't asks questions in class unless you want to be condescended for not having your phD in stats yet, you're better off looking it up after class.
Nothing is taught in this class. There are weekly homework assignments and tests that take a significant amount of time to complete. Do not take this class online if you're not already good at precalculus, because there are no materials to teach you.
Lectures are pretty clear, read the text to get a better idea of underlying theory. Homework and exams are time intensive. The class is alright, Dr. Daniels is very knowledgeable, but is a jerk when it comes to feedback. I stopped going to his weekly QnA sessions because he insulted everyone. If you put the effort in, you'll do well.
This class is so hard to take online unless you are super self disciplined. So many homework assignments, and you can't skip stuff you don't get because the program doesn't allow you to advance. Daniels is nice enough, answers questions but doesn't understand why you're ever confused, if you're not an ace at math you won't want to talk to him.
He talks down to students and you have to teach yourself every lesson. Went to office hours and he called me an idiot and said that I don't know math. He's so condescending and I would not recommend taking his class.
He makes the class really easy to pass as long as you go to class like most the time and answer the bonus questions so you get the attendance points. Just go to the math lab if you have questions because he gets offended if you don't know something and he doesn't require a textbook or put a lot of helpful info in the powerpoint.
Talks down to his students and treats you like you're an idiot. Lots of homework and quizzes, but there are not too bad. The exams are nothing like the practice exams though, so make sure to study.
Pretty useless as an instructor for the online course. I interacted with him once, and the folks who call him condescending aren't lying. I aced this course but it wasn't because Dr Daniels was any help.
He is unbelievable. His typical lecture: 15 minutes of rambling about his cats, daughters and wood chopping, followed by extremely vague and imprecise statements about some statistics, followed by repeating the statement: "I could prove this to you but..." several times until the student is convinced he doesn't know the proof. Don't, just don't.
Dr. Daniels is a rude professor and words questions poorly. The class was out of 700 points, 400 coming from hw, 300 from 3 exams. Daniels is a pretty bad lecturer; he rambles and speeds through notes. The average on our final was a 67% and he did nothing to the grades: no curves, no dropping. I would have done even worse if I didn't have the book
I thought he was rude the first 3/4 of the semester but he got a lot better towards the end. His exams are totally different than the practice exams but he curves your grades at the end if you're trying. He gives 50 pts extra credit just for showing up then a pt every time you get a q right on top of that. I wasn't the biggest fan but not the worst
I used to LOVE stats until I took it with Dr. Daniels. He is a great person but not a great professor. He FLIES through lectures & examples. If we do not understand how to do it, he freaks out. He also gets very off topic and wastes valuable time. He gives practice exams that are said to be harder than the real exam, but they are not even similar.
Oh boy, Dr. Daniels was a trip to have as a prof. He was funny but condescending. He flew through lectures and I had a hard time catching on and he tended to be highly distractible. His extra credit (an opportunity for a bonus point after everyday you have lecture and 25 more if you miss 4 or less bonus questions) was my saving grace
I thought Dr. Daniels was a good professor but if you don't understand something he is condescending about it. He gives you a lot of extra credit opportunities. He goes through lectures pretty quick but gives you tons of examples.
Dr. Daniels is decent enough at teaching the information but awful at grading. The slightest "mistake" on a problem receives full points off. Mistakes include adding extra explanation to an answer or not including something that was never mentioned as required. Avoid unless you are fine getting points off your homework for very petty reasons.
Throughout the entire class he was hardly able to even do half of the problems he was assigning us and frequently just said oh well sorry guys. Youre a professor, its your job to know your subject. He also was routinely unprofessional towards students, expecting them to know his personal schedule and home life and being rude when communicating.
He is not a good teacher, he does not even know half the problems himself making it very hard for us to learn the material.
Daniels is a pretty easy online professor and STA282 was super easy online with him.
I think professor Daniels is great. He has a sense of humor so lectures aren't painful. You can tell he really cares about the wellbeing of his students and ensures everyone understands the material. So far so good!
He and another professor mysteriously took a leave of absence in mid-February at the same time. He sometimes struggles to solve problems and relies on smart students to find solutions. He taught STA 584 but didn't adequately prepare us for STA 585. You may not realize how ineffective he is as a professor until you experience a better one.
