Cool teacher, understands students, willing to help. TAKE HIM! :-D
Very willing to help students
Excellent professor, easy to confront for help.
Material is straight forward and exactly what you need to know for assignments
nice guy.. goes out of his way. strange but knows his stuff, would definitely recommend
Gives terrible notes, knowledgeable but tries too hard to make a difference. May be Swedish, but leaning towards Norwegian
No Comments
Very empathetic guy, tries, but seems unclear on a lot of stuff. Will be an excellent professor one day.
Always willing to help...lectures are a little slow, but easy to follow...he is a little reserved, but if he would just let loose a little bit he could be very cool. Take him.
Davies never fails to enlighten with his encyclopedic knowledge of the world's history. This guy is electric, his insight knows no bounds.
Talks as if he memorized his lecture notes. Gets confused if a student debates a point with him. BUt, gives midterm and final questions far beforehand, plus you get a study sheet for the midterm. Overheads are unhelpful, but he gets along.
very unclear in teachings and gives out the most pointless assignments. Had students write a ten page paper using only the text and notes as source. Should have handed in text with quotes around it.
really nice guy, kinda boring but very informative. will one day be an awesome professor- easy essays, take home final essay
Really nice prof. Knows his stuff. Two essays, midterm and final. Questions are given beforehand. Make sure you attend lecture and discussion.
He was on Jeopardy!!!!
i did awesome in the course all the way through (and this was doing basically no reading and coming to maybe less than 2/3 of all the class meetings) and then i get a D on the final people and it brought my total grade down to a C frm an A. pissed me off
Such an easy class. He gives you the essays and IDs in advance and the take home final/paper is not that bad. I hate history and i got an A-. Definately take this class with him.
Very nice guy who wants his students to do well! Class was a little boring but this class was still one of my favoriets bc he is such a nice guy.
Very cool professor. I think he said he's still in grad school. Anyway, he is really helpful. He grades fairly easily. I didn't study at all for one test and got an 88 on it. He offers a lot of ways to boost grades too. Likes participation and reading the book. He goes over the readings, but providing your own interpretations, he likes. Take him.
I hate history but took it for group requirements. This is a very easy class, pretty boring. Davies is great though, so take him
I took John at Temple University.. He is a grad student at Delaware but apparently Temple needed a teacher so Delaware sent him. He was good.. Class was pretty tough I thought but overall he taught the class well and was nice... Would take him again but he is going back to Delaware.
Davies is great. He is very funny and does a great job at getting the material across. He is kinda slow with grading but it's not that bad. He gives power points with clearly defined notes and is always on track. He gives you essay questions ahead of time and allows notes sheets on tests. He gets a lot of info across and is a great professor !!!
worst teacher ever, so many readings and grades very hard, if you're trying to take him for a requirement, dont, his class ended up being worse than my major classes
If you are interested in Early American History, do not take this class. Doesn't teach you anything you don't already know about. Professor is a really nice guy, the class is still terrible. Class participation 20% as much as the final. Lame. Midterm was tough too.
Some of these people are out of their minds...Davies is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Participate in class, he'll love you forever. He's your classic Star Wars nerd who loves history...great to take if you want to learn something
Davies is obsessed with class participation. It counts for almost as much as the final! His tests are all open ended essays and he grades them harshly. When asked why you got the grade you were given, he doesn't have an answer. Homeworks are long readings and you are expected to take detailed notes for possible pop quizzes.
So here's the deal. Davies is a great guy. Really, he is. And most of the time, he's a good teacher, albeit a bit boring at times. The biggest problem I have with Davies is that he DOESN'T get you back anything on time and he grades everything on a difficult scale. His expectations for projectspapersquizzes are unclear a lot of the time.
Pretty easy class! We started off with re-enacting the revolution (Continental Congress and such). There were a few baby papers, none were hard. Reading quizzes but he'll drop the lowest or couple lowest ones. Research project but it's not very hard and you can do a powerpoint instead of a paper. Plus, NO EXAMS!!!!
Davies is a likeable enough guy. We did a practice role playing thing which was kinda fun if you let yourself get into it. You have to speak in class because participation is a very large percent of your grade. He grades papers a little bit more harshly than he should considering he never returns any assignments on time which is annoying.
Easy teacher. Three essays and have a chance to do them twice
Prof. Davies is an absolutely great guy. I stopped by his office hours a few times and each time I felt significantly more confident. In the class I took with him there were no tests but informal writing and essays so if you do the read, which can be a lot, you will be fine and learn a lot. He offers feedback and a chance to resubmit your essay too
Prof Davies is a good guy, very interested in what he does. His assignment rubrics are straightforward but he is a very tough grader (f.e. highest grade he gave anyone for participation was 95100, for a paper was 96100). Quizzes aren't "pop quizzes" because he gives you the question(s) beforehand. Would take again, very helpful and funny.
Davies is a good guy. He doesn't expect much in this course. You don't have to go to the lectures. Only 3 essays, NO exams, which was great. Essay prompts were given early and very broad topics. Tricky sometimes, and TA was a somewhat hard grader, but you could redo it for a better grade. Boring lectures and discussion but SO easy. Recommend.
No exams all year. just three essays and informal writing in the discussion lecture. however essays are hard the TA is a tough grader but you get good feedback and are allowed to do them over for a higher grade. you do not have to show up to class to get an A because the essays are not based on class work
Thought this class would be an Easy A, ITS NOT. No exams, essays, and a potential quiz every day so you have to go to class even though you don't need any of the information he rants about to pass the class. He is so unorganized and will send out an email at 10 at night to inform you about changes for class the next day.
LOVE HIM he's an amazing professor and knows what he's talking about. No exams and no final; 3 at-home essays but changed it to 2 b/c he had too much to grade. Assigned readings for every class and he flips a coin: heads there's a quiz on it, tails there's not. BUT on the syllabus he gives you each question for potential quizzes so you're prepared.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. this guy is amazing. i took this class for gen credit, would totally take another class with him. i missed a lot of class, still walking out with a good grade. keep up on readings, he has reading quizzes, but they make you understand the reading in a way i'm super okay with. the textbook is great. this guy makes history fun
LITERALLY DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. thought it would be an easy A because no tests but essays are graded so hard even though you can revise. you have to go to almost every class because of pop quizzes and in class assingments which kill your grade if you don't get all 100s which is almost impossible. lecture is boring & doesn't relate to essays
Davies is great! I took him for American Indian History. He doesn't really like lecturing, so he relies a lot on participation--you're golden as long as you do the reading beforehand and make a coherent comment in class. So attendance is important! He tends to grade a little harshly, but if you go see him during office hours, he'll help you out.
I have taken 3 classes (ranging from 100s-300s levels) with Davies and am scheduled to take a 4th with him next semester. He's great and cares about his students; especially the ones who participate and show interest. He is easily accessible outside of class through email. Not an easy A but you'll learn a lot if you're interested in the subject.
Prof. Davies is a really great guy, who genuinely cares about the success of his students in his class. Attendance is NECESSARY! There is also a lot of homework and in-class group assignments you will have to do, if you decide to take this class. Exams aren't too bad (he tells you what it will cover exactly beforehand so you won't go in blind).
The absolute worst professor with technology I've ever had.
Professor Davies is a good guy and cares about his students but does not do a good job of explaining the material. He will push back due dates and he made the last 2 exams take home. He is not good with technology and will take a lot of time in the beginning of class trying to set up his laptop.
Lectures and content of class is best part. Davies always has trouble with technology and is the worst at grading in a timely manner, takes 2-3+ weeks to get anything graded. He will cancel assignments & classes because of this (making your grade dependent on few assignments). He is accessible outside of class, friendly, caring, but disorganized.
Such a harsh grader, give broad essay/exam prompts and everyone gets around a 75 because you don't come to the specific conclusion he has predetermined. Doesn't lecture, discusses assigned readings no one does. If no one engages w. him he gets pissed and makes a pop quiz on the spot. Too much BS for a breath requirement, take something/someone else
Davies tries his best but is not specific enough with assignments so everyone ends up doing pretty poorly. however, he always gives a chance to revise and get your grade up. There were no exams in this class but a quiz every class so you can never miss it. To do good on the quizzes you have to take good notes on your homework assignments.
Professor Davies is so sweet and caring. There was a clicker quiz before almost every class, but he gave us the questions the night before. Easy to get an A if you prepare and do the assigned readings.
I found this class pretty pointless. No tests, clicker quizzes almost every class on readings from the night before. He gives you the questions he'll ask, but I have yet to do well on one (barely count for your grade.) I genuinely feel like we do nothing in this class and I have a 90. Overall, if you're cool with group work this is an easy A
No Exams, No Quizzes. Do the readings, show up to class and you're well on your way to a good grade. Getting a B+ in this class is very do-able with minimal work, and an A is pretty easy if you're willing to put a little time into it. Not always the most interesting, but I recommend for an easy breadth.
Easy A! all you have to do is show up. A lot of clicker quizzes but fairly easy. The Progressive project is a very long project and is annoying but still fairly easy. He likes to let his classes out early which is nice.
You have 3 long term papers throughout the course- no clear guidelines are provided and he takes off points without giving true reason.
Pretty easy. Class consists of daily clicker quizzes on reading (talk to peers) + lots of group work. He mainly lectures, but you don't really have to listen (no exams). My main issue with him is that he is a VERY slow grader which makes the papers, meant to build on each other, hard to do since you are writing in the dark without any feedback.
Professor Davies is terrible. Everyone said this was an easy class with no exams. There is a huge research paper AND two exams now. Literally ALL he teaches is how to do citations absolutely no history. Does not lecture at all makes us read like 50 pages and then gives clicker quizzes. Slow grader and terrible with canvas.
I took this specific history course because I saw all positive things about professor davies. He changed the coursework this semester. We have a huge research project, 2 textbooks, and 2 exams now. Focuses on nailing you on citations rather than history. Also gives 10 question quizzes on 50+ page readings, so be prepared for those!
A lot of reading and quizzes on the readings every week. A big research paper and two exams based on the readings. During class all he talks about is how to do citations properly we barely learned anything about history. No clear guidelines for the research paper. Lectures are extremely boring.
Dr. Davies is a very sweet guy. One of the professors I genuinely like at UD. There's quizzes every week, but seriously aren't hard if you did your work. And a HUGE research project due at the end of the semester, but a lot of the assignment are preparing for the project and he gives you feedback, in the end you just have to put it together.
Professor Davies is one of my favorite teachers so far at UD. He gives extra credit & if you need extra time for any homework or paper, or anything else, he would usually give you more time. He is very understanding when you need to talk to him & he gives great feedback on homework & papers. My writing has gotten a lot better because of his class.
Dr. Davies is a great professor! I cant recommend him enough for History 104! It is an easy class as long as you know whats going on in class. Be prepared to write though! The only thing is he is strict with grading citations, so be prepared to learn from him how to do that!
Really easy class but super boring. Dude cares a lot about citations. Feel like I didn't learn anything but really easy A.
So much extra credit in class. Many people don't try in this class so if you put in the effort and engage it will show. Really nice guy, quizzes every week but they are open to everything and all answers can be found in the free textbook online. Definitely take this class even if you don't have anything history related. It's quite easy and funny.
His world history class after the 1400's is one of the easiest classes I have taken. He is a well-rounded professor and surely cares about his students.
He changed his syllabus this year and there are no more weekly quizzes, instead he has us complete reading responses which are pretty easy if you pay attention to the reading. He is super helpful and cares a lot about if you show up to class and participate. He is super understanding about extensions and he communicates fast over email.
I had Prof. Davies for HIST337: Topics in American History. I thought it would be interesting b/c we were focusing on social violence, but this class was so boring. Davies is a super nice guy but his material was so disorganized and the semester had no clear direction. Rambles in class, grades final paper really hard. Learned nothing, waste of time
boring class but no tests, midterm or final. weekly quizzes at home online, easy from lectures, 3 chances to take, and drops lowest 2 grades. final paper but you work up to it and will help you. has some in-class assignments so attendance is mandatory randomly.
No tests, only weekly reading quizzes and a semester-long paper, as well as in class assignments. Many classes got out early.
You can tell that Davies cares about his students. He is big on citations and academic honesty. Lectures could be boring but it's an easy class and you don't need to come to class to get an A. There were no quizzes or tests. There were a few easy reading response hw's. Two essay drafts and final essay are main grades, easy essay to write.
Fantastic and caring professor. No tests or quizzes, just a few short essays based on reading and one major paper that's really easy as it's broken up into small parts during the semester. This class is new so things were all over the place and not structured, but the professor is really dedicated and makes this class enjoyable.
There's one major assignment (an essay) for the course which we work on all semester so take the feedback that he gives you and use it properly. Citations are super important in this class. He gives weekly quizzes which are straightforward and you get multiple attempts. It's hard to fail this class if you try even a little bit.
Not a fan of history but I didn't mind taking it with Dr. Davies. He's funny and really passionate about history. I was a bit bored during lectures but they weren't bad-- I just do not like history. Quizzes were online and quite easy. There's one big paper broken up into 3 assignments that is a little time consuming but honestly not too bad.
He's really nice, caring, and understanding. He is easily accessible outside of class and takes time to make sure you understand if you reach out to him. If you show up to class, participate every now and then, and put care and some effort into the assigned work, you'll do super well in your classes. Take him if you can, you're in for a good time.
Professor Davies was extremely passionate about history - I felt like his expertise was wasted on a 100-level course that most students were taking as a breadth course. The assigned reading was mind-numbingly boring but it was possible to pass the quizzes just by skimming the reading and his lectures were quite absorbing.
He is an adorable professor and is so sweet. One quiz is due each week and usually no homework. The big grades are a bibliography paper and the group presentation project. The class is easy if you put in a little work and the lectures are usually interesting. He uses videos and the textbook for the quizzes so make sure to actually get them.
TAKE HIS CLASS!! He is the best professor at UD and is such an amazing man. I had no homework outside of class other than our paper and final presentation. Everything else was done in class. He wanted to see you succeed, especially on the quizzes since he gave us 3 tries to get the best grade. He drops the 2 lowest in-class assignments & quizzes.
Davies is a good professor. The feedback he provides is very clear. The only downside of this class is that you are graded on very few assignments, but he did say that he was going to change that for Fall 2023.
Dr. Davies is a great guy and incredibly smart. He really cares about history and wants his students to succeed. He lectures most days and there are weekly quizzes based on the lectures and readings assigned. There is no final, but a group project. Also very flexible about due dates.
Davies is passionate about the topics he covers in class, but I'm not sure teaching is his strong suit. There is no textbook, but you will have to read and take timed tests weekly. He is so sweet! but what the hell do you mean by group project for a final? There are gaps in the curriculum and it was not easy to maintain an A in this class.
Davies is a great prof for those who don't like history. He explains historical events clearly and concisely. The homeworks are just online module quizzes every week and there are no exams, just two big projects: an annotated bib and a final group project. He's a bit of a picky grader with the group project though.
Great professor. He makes you read a bit and his lectures can often be dry but he is really smart and the articles you have to read can be very interesting. Short quiz each week on the reading which arent too bad, and the final project is a group presentation which is easy. He gives good feedback especially if you go to his office hours. Take him.
Professor Davies was a very nice professor that teaches in an interactive way. Rather than presenting in a typical lecture setting, he assigned group work where we basically have to research the content using historical sources. I found that this made the course a little more interesting. Only complaint is that he can be a bit strict with grading.
Class itself isn't hard but Davies gives unclear instructions and unclear feedback, grades hard
Dr. Davies is super friendly and a good professor. He has the voice of someone who would narrate a historical documentary. I unfortunately don't like the course only because it felt more like a literature course rather than a history one. I recommend taking this as a breadth with a friend so group work is easier.
Davies is funny and wholesome in his lectures. I was skeptical to take a 300 level class for my HCH requirement, but I am very satisfied that I took his course. He is very caring and it is very simple what he expects of his students. Attendance not mandatory, but you'll have less homework if you go. No final (group presentation instead).
I thought he was a very good professor overall. Sometimes I do feel the grading was a little harsh, but I never felt that I wasn't learning in the class.
This class wasn't crazy difficult, just a lot of readings and group work which can be a lot. Dr. Davies is genuinely one of the nicest professors I have had here, and will help you if you need it. The only thing is that he grades really harshly and it takes him a while to put grades in. Overall you really just can't skip class due to the workload.
I thought this class was fun and easy but it is a ton of group work almost every class. He is one of the nicest professors I've ever had but his grading could be a little harsh. If you keep up with the work and show up to every class you will do very well.
