really nice guy but teaches out of the book, dont go to class & its ok
Boring but easy
easy, i liked him a lot
Help the students as best as he can.
he taught straight from the book, by the end of the semester I just brought a highlighter to class and blindly marked passages that he read. Didnt learn anything...but ended up with a C.
cool guy, very helpful and easy
GREAT teacher a lot of notes , but the test comes right from them and basic homework problems.. great guy overall take him if you can
hes pretty good you just have to ask questions
Prof. Deak is a great guy! He's an awesome teacher and he has study sessions that you can attend before every test when he goes over all the material on the test and answers any questions you have. He really likes what he does, and tries to help students

I've gotten to know Dr. Deak extremely well & find him to be an excellent professor. You will have to work hard but you will learn an incredible amount. He is wonderful about re-explaining things.I consider myself fortunate to have had him as a prof.
Nice guy, tough class. Can be confusing during the lectures at times. Make sure you pay attention in class and study often. Tests are not that difficult. He doesnt try and put hard questions on test to kill your grade. I recommend taking him if you can.
First semester wasn't that bad but second was aweful. Didn't slow down in class when asked to and put questions on the test he never went over. Take a different teacher if possible!

This has to be on of the most interesting teachers I have had. He is very into what he is teaching and he always makes class interesting. You rarely have to take notes if you print his class slides and he drops the lowest test grade. Take him.
Deak is great..works really hard to make difficult material understandable and fun..very nice and helpful. A+, Deak!
Awesome teacher. Always willing to go the extra mile for you. Best professor I've ever had. A+ He tries to make the material easy eventhough it's difficult.
He is an awesome guy, and he makes chemistry interesting, well as interesting as it can be. If you ever need help with anything, he will put you first. Def take him!
hes good...hes a little fast though. but he tries really hard to help you if you need it. he even holds special study sessions with anyone who wants to go before a test.
Very hard core with Chem lit and writing. Great to talk to and helps with problems but who cares about a book written in german unless you are fluent with the language? And don't even get me started with the Chem Abstracts homework.
Takes this 1 credit class a little too seriously, assignments are a annoying pure waste of time. Gotta love the elastic pants and mullet though!
great teacher...never took chem before til this class...struggled at first, but he goes totally out of the way to help...gives take home quizes to help grade
Dr. Deak is the man! The class is tough though, you will work extremely hard. He's very helpful, office door always open. Tests are somewhat easy; he likes to make his students think on exams. Always do the homework he gives you! Gives open book homework assignments, which boost grades. TAKE HIM!
Horrible teacher and even worse person
Terrible teacher. Trys to make class fun but fails miserably. Tests come out of no where, have nothing to do with assigned problems. When you ask him for help on a specific question he is useless.A disgrace to this university.DON'T TAKE
You may think the test are going to be easy because he gives you practice test and HW problems, however, there nothing like the problems you've done. He is also very moody
Nice guy as long as there is no problems. If for some reason you have an extenuating circumstane, he is unwilling to help you, and has an apathetic attitide towards your situation.
Deak is one of the best teachers I have had. He is very clear, and his powerpoint slides are very helpful. Tests are a little on the difficult side, however, but take home quizzes help boost your grade. Basically deak is the man.
Horrible teacher, avoid at all costs. Should not get tenure!
Wow bad teacher. Teaches right from the texted book, I wonder if he actaully knows the stuff and gives 10-12 page tests! Stay away from this guy.
he is a nice guy and tries to be funny. he teaches pretty well and lets you brings sheets into tests but makes the tests REAL hard so u need the paper and grades hard.
Tries real hard... sometimes easy to understand... sometimes not... GOOD
He is a fairly good teacher, but I am convinced that he does not really understand anything that he's saying. Not very helpful if you have questions. Tests are pretty hard, but if you do the homework and go to class you will be ok. He really is just an idiot.
Deak is a great professor. Hes not an idiot at all. Hes really helpful and knows how to teach very well and not be too strict about it. The tests aren't hard at all if you do what he says, especially if you practice the problems that he always tells you are going to be on the tests. Awesome teacher.
i really liked dr. deak, i think he is a great teacher and a great guy, he was extremely helpful when i had questions in and out of class, tests are tough, but thats chemistry, i would recommend
him and russac are the easiest for general chem. all the kids who have marx, foley, or baumann will work so much harder than you its great. easy class, especially if you have a little background in chemistry.
he was prob the best teacher at the u. he bases all of his tests off of the hw he gives and most of the time the questions are right out of the textbook just w/ different numbers. he is very helpful too and has a lot of review sessions. definitely take him if u want an easy a. but you really have to do the hw which can be time consuming but it pays
Dr. Deak is the man. He tests are not bad at all and he is usually very clear about the material that will be on them. He offers many review sessions before the exams and he is always welcoming to questions. Such a goof sometimes too which can be entertaining. Take.
He is actually a good teacher which is rare for any teacher in the sciences. Most chem teachers here can't teach for their life but he's really good! Tests are not bad if you just study. TAKE HIM!
Dr. Deak was a great professor. He really tries to make sure everyone knows what's going on, he goes slowly and he is very nice. Take him! He's not only nice but he's great at teaching.
TAKE HIM! Extremely nice, clearly, helpful, etc. Tests are based off of notes taken in class and homework assigned from book. Drops one exam too, which is always great. His final is cumulative but not extremely hard. There is no better professor for General Chemistry than Dr. Deak. He's great, as long as you put forth your best effort.
Dr. Deak is great. I was never good with chemistry but he was more than willing to help me. He is such a nice guy and anyone who says anything bad about him is someone who didn't go to class, didn't do the work, and got mad when they didn't get the grade they wanted. As long as you try, he will go out of his way to help you. Take him :)
Deak is really easy and a good teacher. While doing problems he goes to each student to make sure they understand one-on-one. It can get boring sometimes with the repetitive practice problems but overall it's not too bad.
Definitely one of the easier options for gen chem but can go annoyingly slow. You're always behind all the other sections. Other than that, he makes every concept crystal clear and gives detailed notes so you learn a lot. If you have a good background in high school chem or better yet took AP Chem, this class will be easy.
Dr. Deak is absolutely brilliant! I love this man! If you want a solid foundation for chemistry, take this guy! I took him for GEN CHEM 112 and he made even the most confusing of topics perfectly understandable. He is truly a nice guy too! If you are struggling or just want to go through homework problems, he is more than willing to help! :)
I absolutely loved Dr. Deak. He's adorable and he really makes chemistry understandable. One of the sweetest most genuine professors I've taken. I absolutely recommend him. *Keep in mind* Its not an easy "A"! You have to work for it. Stay on top of the home works. You don't hand them in, but they help a whole lot.
Dr. Deak is a good professor with but gives exams that favor the difficult side. BUT, he is extremely helpful through office hours. He is an average teacher for lecture but for CHEM, all you have to do is practice, practice, practice. His tests are fair and apply concepts through problems which is important in testing how much you know. I recommend
I heard Dr. Deak was fairly easy and his tests were based off of the homework. Although this is true, the problems were worded differently and it was difficult to me because his tests are 98% multiple choice, so no partial credit. Stay on top of the homework and ask for help if you need it. However I would not recommend.
Dr. Deak is a nice man but this class is beyond difficult. I studied for weeks for one test and would still do poorly and I had a tutor and went to his office hours every week. Avoid at all costs!
You must practice the homework problems to do well either rusak ro deak would be good chem teachers for chem113
Dr. Deak is the best option for chem. Very clear, approachable, and more than willing to help. It's not an easy A but if you put in the time and effort you'll do well. Don't assume because he doesn't grade homework that you don't have to do it. They helped me a lot when preparing for exams. Go see him during office hours too he's a great guy.
A great professor!!!! Very knowledgeable and organized with his lectures. Makes the class less stressful. I definitely would want him as my professor again
Dr. Deak is definitely one of my favorite professors. He gives practice tests before the actual exam and lets you keep your exam, is a fair grader, he's so passionate about chem and it's so cute. If I had to take chem again with him I would do it in a heartbeat. He gives homework that helps if you do it but its not mandatory
Deak is a great guy, and very personable during office hours if you need extra help. The course itself is super tough though, and in order to do even average you need to go to class and do the homework problems. Recitation isn't helpful at all, so get a tutor right off the bat if you don't understand something. Overall, I'd take Deak again.
Such a nice and funny guy. I'd definitely take him again if I were more into chemistry. This class made me realize how much I hate chem. The tests are very difficult. Gives lots of homework, it's not mandatory, but it helps prepare you for the exams. Overall, if you like chemistry, definitely take him!
I took Dr. Deak over intersession. On the first day, he explained how the grades distributed, and his grading scale is very nice. Tests are fair. DO THE HOMEWORK problems they significantly impact your grade. He tried to make lectures more enjoyable.
To say the least, Dr. Deak is the BEST. He really loves teaching and does an amazing job at it. He teaches you how to do the problem and gives you homework problems that will help prepare you for the exams. DO the homework... trust me! Amazing guy. Awesome class. I highly suggest him for someone who wants to enjoy taking Chemistry and learning.
Very smart man and knows his stuff. Likes to lecture and gets a bit excessive and dull. Very easy to lose focus but if you listen you'll be fine. Practice problems a couple days before the tests and do the homework if you want a grade above a 75 on the exams. Recitation quizzes are nice grade boosters.
I personally strongly dislike Chemistry but Dr. Deak made the class so much more bearable/enjoyable. He has a quirky sense of humor and you can tell when he's interested in the topic he is teaching. Definitely do the homework he assigns, his tests are just the homework problems worded differently.
The worst prof. I have ever had. I want to say he's a decent guy but nope. not sympathetic or helpful in anyway! No chance for extra credit because he "would have to give it to the entire class", if you have a class average of a 70, everyone could use the extra credit. Tests are the HW worded differently, but does not give adequate time to complete
Dr Deak is the worst professor I have ever had. He lectures on theory and tests on math. His exams are challenging for this reason. Even by doing all of the homework problems and studying, getting over a B is rare. His office hours are unhelpful as well. He is bland and has no sympathy for the students. He gives no extra credit either. Stay away!
Dr. Deak is the smartest man. He is a very good teacher and if you do the homework, you will be good for his class. He teaches very fast, but you should be going over material at night anyways. I was scared to go to office hours, but I ended up going and he was so helpful and nice. He gave me great advice on my major and was fun to talk to
This class isn't easy but it is worthwhile. Dr. Deak is an amazing teacher and it is the students fault if they fail. His tests are exactly the homework questions worded differently. The homework questions are more challenging than the test questions, so do the homework and you will be fine. He loves chemistry and gets very into it, he is very nice
I personally did not do well in Professor Deak's class because I did not put the effort it, but when he talked to me about my poor grades, he was incredibly kind and caring. You need to put the effort in to do well because it is chemistry after all, but Deak is a great dude. Study and you'll most likely pass!
Dr. Deak is the best chem professor at the U! If you fail it means you don't do the homework! What the exams and quizzes are EXACTLY what are in the homework problems. Do the homework and you'll do great in the class!
Dr. Deak is such a good teacher because he does his best to teach in an understandable way. Chemistry is a really hard subject but he tries to make it easy. He goes really fast on some subjects and slow on others. If you do his homework and spend time on this class you should do fine. His tests are completely based on the homework he assigns.
Course is very difficult and he does not explain the material. He grades harshly. More than half the class dropped out after fall break.
Doesn't help students, and the way he emails you seems like he doesn't care. His tests are hard, I wouldn't take him again. He literally does not care how you do in this class. He gives you attitude if you ask him anything. Highly do not recommend.
Greatly organized Guy! For his class you just need to focus in his class and work on the assigned problems. He doesnt grades the them, but they are really helpful in exams. If you ask him to any query, he would literally walk you through each steps. But if you don't work on the assigned problems, there is no way to pass his exams. HW is the KEY.
I took this class online and I was basically teaching myself. We didnt meet at all for classes. He posted his lectures and hw problems, it was up to us to keep up with the work. I eventually dropped the course because it was just too much.
Even with COVID-19 going on, Professor Deak did not show any sympathy. It was already hard to do chemistry online, but he made the experience even more terrible. He barely had zoom meetings to review. I remember asking for more help and he just told me to work harder without telling me specifically where I was going wrong.
I am a chemistry major with a 3.8 gpa (before Deak a 3.94). This is amongst the most poorly taught classes I have taken. Class feels like being blindfolded while being read the textbook from text-to-speech software. He shows no concern for student performance. Exams have little to do with covered material and have too little time. Avoid if you can
During the pandemic did not hold class. Only had office hours. No zoom meetings, and video lectures did not match up to homework problems. Must take in person, did not handle online well AT ALL.
Deak is a fun guy. Lectures can be boring sometimes, but usually he makes them interesting. Make sure to study for the tests and do the homework. Always willing to answer questions as well.
Deak lacked empathy for students struggles, focused on personal validation over creating an inclusive learning environment which made students feel uncomfortable. To improve, the professor should prioritize students needs, create a supportive and understanding environment where students feel comfortable seeking help without fear of judgement
Having great prior chem class was key. Deak was very helpful, approachable and wanted students to pass. However, he goes by the book to teach chem and has a very traditional lecture style. The homework is optional but the only and best way to study. 3 exams and a final (which make up mostly all of your grade), about a dozen quizzes in recitation.
Dr. Deak is the best! He is incredibly intelligent in his field, and his lectures are great. His slides have all the content and are thorough. He is very helpful. His tests are exactly like the practice exams, preparing you for the test!
I would not recommend anyone taking him who does not feel confident in science whatsoever. He rarely provided extra examples so that you could practice; ONLY said to look at the book. He does not want you to succeed.
Dr. Deak is an excellent professor. Gen chem is a difficult class that requires lots of practice. Homework is exactly like the test. The class is graded on exams and quizzes, but review sessions are held before exams and practice exams are given which allow you to know exactly what to study while also giving an opportunity to ask for clarification.
If you have a strong background of chem, Dr. Deak is great. His exams are just like the homework problems he assigns. He is very nice and is a reasonable grader.
Didn't take first 2 tests seriously. Did terrible at the beginning. Didn't do any homework. however, when it came time to reevaluate whether I should drop the class. Dr Deak told me that I could work on it and finish the class and pass. He helped me countless times througout the end of the semester with any questions and multiple office hours.
TAKE DEAK If you find yourself not the strongest chem student. His office hours are a blessing. He answers all my questions and will even make sure you truly understand. He is nice and very approachable. You will never have to guess what is on the test b/c you get a practice test. The hw is not graded or collected it is truly for you to practice.
If I had to pick a chem professor it would be him. This class can be very easy by just doing the homework. All you have to do is the homework and then you will get a good grade. He also gives practice tests before exams so you can practice the types of problems he will put on. if you need help ask him, he will go over anything and help you out.
Do the homework and get the grade you want. Dr Deak is a very smart, funny, and nice guy. He explains everything in detail. The class is fast-paced and very heavy on memorization. His practice exams help a lot and every class homework isn't graded but again, DO THE HOMEWORK. He wants everyone to do well. Great teacher for a pretty difficult class.
Everything is taught in lecture, no reading required. Homework assigned every night but not graded/checked. Study for exams by practicing homework problems and you'll be fine. If you are confused, go to his office hours and he will help. I found him funny and engaging in class. Exams were challenging but not impossible. Loved his lectures!
Dr.Deak îs very helpful for chem 112. I took him last semester and it's very easy to figure out what's on the exam. It's just the homework questions he assigns, but he switches the numbers. If you can do the homework questions, it's an easy A. He gives you last year exam as a study guide, which are almost identical to the ones you receive.
Amazing professor!! He says it right from the beginning, the homework is optional but DO IT. The homework questions are the same as the questions on the exam. Also he posted a practice exam from the year before which is amazing to study from. The final was hard and that's what brought down my grade.
