Professor Dean is a great professor. He makes the course easy to understand, and he is always there if you need any type of clarification or help. He exams are exactly what he teaches in class, so if you study, you'll be sure to pass.

Dr. Dean is an awesome teacher. He does the impossible - he makes plants interesting. his lectures are great and his tests are exactly what he tells you they are; he doesn't pull any tricks.he's a great teacher.

bio 103 lecture is the easiest for the whole sequence; however, the lab is a ****. The lab is a pain in the ass and hard. Lab quizzes are harder than lecture tests. You have to know more for lab.

Amazing professor. I hated bio in H.S., but he made it so easy for non-science majors to do well. Highly recommended. You gotta be in class for the notes, but trust me, you'll WANT to be there!

He is so nice and knows EVERYTHING about plants. Just ask him a question and you will see. I’m really not a plant person but he did make class interesting. Test are fair but you must study, and not the night before. Great teacher especially if you like plants.

One of the best at DePaul, straight forward, very clear, loud (so you can't fall asleep), and the combination with Maginness was perfect. I highly recommend. labs are easy and he is really helpful.

Opinionated guy, easy course, great class discussions, available, fairly easy grader, interested in helping students. A little bit redundant.

Overall insteresting class - 2 exams, a final, and a paper. Had a lab portion with quizzes which were a bit hard to study for since material couldn't be studied at home. Grades fairly, speaks loudly, not much work. Class attendance not really mandatory, but extremely recommended. Lectures important.

Dr. Dean rocks! Who knew plants could be so interesting? He is crystal clear on topics and is funny (and very very loud) so it's hard not to stay involved. Highly highly recommended.

Dr. Dean has been my best teacher at DePaul. He's so knowledgeable and teaches very clearly. I never expected to like plants, but he made it fascinating! While it will seem like there is a massive amount to know for his tests, his tests are extremely, extremely fair. If you can take him, DO! You won't regret it.

I LOVED Dr. Dean. He really makes the subject matter as interesting as he can. If anyone says he is extremely hard, they're wrong. This guy is really a great professor. I always had a hard time in BIO when I was in high school, but this guy made me really interested in BIO. He doesn't use powerpoints which is actually helpful and he doesn't move on if people are having issues with the material. Take him for BIO and you won't regret it.

Dr. Dean is one of the best professors at DePaul! He's a great lecturer, and is always willing and able to answer questions. His tests are moderately difficult, but if you put in some work, you'll do well. The comprehensive section on the final is almost identical to the two exams, and the keys are posted online, so study those for the final! :)

Dr. Dean makes a great lecturer for his enthusiasm and humor! He is really patient with students in taking the time to answer questions and making himself available. While the lecture material is tricky at first glance, there are plenty of resources that any student could easily access to study for the exams. definitely take Dr. Dean!

Great professor! He spoke enthusiastically and explained the subject clearly. Although the book helped with the general understanding, the tests were almost completely based on lecture. If you show up, pay attention, and study for the tests there is no reason why you shouldn't succeed. Definitely take him if you can.

I took this class because it says he's a chili pepper.... I was waiting for him to come out the first day of class. He's half bald and like in his 40s, not a chili pepper in my opinion! But he's a good teacher, answers questions clearly, repeats himself, he gets boring at times though. But I'd take him again.

The best professor out there. He is so dedicated to his teaching, enthusiastic and he does a fantastic job explaining concepts. He keeps you awake with occasional jokes. Love him.

If you get a chance to take this man, DO IT. He is seriously one of the best professors at DePaul and knows what he's talking about. He's really clear and makes a class of 100+ feel wayyy smaller. Just go to EVERY class and please, TAKE NOTES!!!

OMG I LOVED DR. DEAN! He was so great at explaining biology on a level that was easily understood. His passion was so evident and you never had any issues hearing him (he yells when he gets excited). He was absolutely hilarious and an absolute joy to have as a professor. He gets especially fired up talking about plants :)

Hes an awesome guy and i could tell that he really cared about what he was teaching. Even though plant biology wasn't everyones favorite topic he helped to make it really interesting. would definitely take him again.

Its a tough class, but its graduate level so at this point you should be able to pass without problems. Dr Dean is a great guy, funny, great teacher, and understanding if you talk to him about any problems. The class material is extremely esoteric but he teaches it very well. But if you miss lecture theres little chance of you figuring it out solo.

Dr. Dean knows his plants well. Material is lecture heavy. Recording lectures and re-listening to take notes off of is recommended. His tests are essentially based on his lecture. Reading the biology textbook helps reinforcing the ideas he discussed in lecture. Online weekly quizzes, iClickers, lab, two exams, and a final comprise the final grade

Dr. Dean is the plant master! He is very passionate about plant anatomy and physiology (which is the 1st half of Bio193). You should definitely read the book outside of class since he does not have the greatest PPT presentations, but I would definitely take him again!

Dr. Dean was my favorite professor in the gen bio sequence. He is SUPER passionate about plants and is a great lecturer. He has power point slides and has great drawings to supplement the material. Tests are hard, but read the book and take good notes.

Professor Dean is a great professor. He is approachable after lecture for any questions. His class on plants is quite difficult but possible to understand. Highly recommend to record lectures on a smartphone and re-listen to them because tests are based on lecture and he offers no notes.

This is my first general Biology class at DePaul and Dr. Dean has made the experience bearable. However, the tests grow more and more difficult as they go and if you don't take solid notes, you won't pass. His lectures are heavy and if you don't study off of the guides he posts onto D2L, you'll struggle when it comes closer to the exam date.

Dr. Dean was a great teacher to start a BIO sequence with. The class is super lecture heavy, so attendance while not madatory is super important. He can be boring at times, however he clearly lays out everything you need to know for the exam in his lectures and review guides. He is prone to tagents, but overall is a great teacher!

He is an amazing teacher and I highly recommend him to anyone who is taking BIO 191! His lectures are incredible and he knows how to teach. He is very passionate about what he does and is also funny. I enjoy going to his class because I know I am actually going to learn. He is an expert and loves to share information. He is incredible.

If you have the chance to take Dr. Dean, definitely do so! He is such an awesome lecturer from all aspects. He presents information clearly, is hilarious, and accessible outside class. He provides study guides. Study those and you'll get an A. The answers to those guides are mostly answered through his lectures though, so make sure to write notes!

Such an amazing professor. He explains everything very clearly and makes all q's are answered. He is really kind and wants you to succeed. By far the best for bio191, he provides a very thorough study guide before every exam and his tests reflect the study guide. honestly, just go to class, if you took AP bio it should be extremely straightforward.

Dr. Dean was a great professor! I took him for Bio 191 and the material of that class is very challenging, but if you take good notes and study for the tests you should do fine. Also he's always willing to answer questions and meet after class.

Dr. Dean is great. He's a great professor but all he really does is lecture - nothing else. It's not too bad, fell asleep a couple times. He makes very extensive study guides and the tests aren't difficult at all. Best 191 professor out of all the ones during my quarter. Online quiz every week that isn't hard at all. Attendance is mandatory though.

Dr. Dean is one of the best professors at DePaul. He dpoes lecture a lot in class, I did feel tired during some of the lectures. Most of the things that will be on the test are usually not on the slides so be prepared to study or look back at the textbook. He also makes good study guides that will prepare for the exam. He's a great professor!

Dr. Dean was kind enough to record his lectures during the pandemic and that helped me out a lot. Pay very close attention to detail in his lectures because his quizzes are really tough. He made plant anatomy very easy to understand and he makes you work for your grade. I learned a lot from Dr. Dean and I would take him again without hesitation.

Taking 193 online was difficult due to Covid but Dr Dean recorded lectures and held office hours often as well as responded to emails asap, Dr Dean is very caring, knowledgable, and great lecturer for the heavy content of 193. I had him in 191 as well and he has always been great. Study the studyguides and pay attention in lecture.

John Dean is an amazing professor. You can tell that he genuinely wants to see his student succeed. His Friday review sessions are very helpful and his lecture videos are very in depth in detail. This professor is nice, respectful, funny and very knowledgeable on the subject of biology. 100% recommend taking his class

The professor was great! He is very passionate about his work, and expresses it very clearly during his lectures. One thing to note is that there is a lot of information needed to study for this course. I would recommend reviewing lectures weekly.

Dr. Dean's BIO 191was great. His lectures were clear and engaging, and the tests were very straightforward. He makes study guides for exam content, which is not done by all bio professors. Overall, I would say the class is easy and basically a review of AP Biology content. If you go to lecture you'll do fine in the class.

Dr. Dean tells you everything you need to know for the tests. Make sure to pay full attention to the lecture slides and what he says because the test is soley based on that. There aren't really any surprises on the test. I found the Genetics unit to be a bit challenging but that's mostly because I didn't pay attention in lecture for it that much.

Great professor who is passionate about what he teaches. Gives lectures every day, along with weekly quizzes based on the content. Some material he tests you on are also found in the book, so skim through it. Take notes, take the quizzes, attend Supplemental Instruction sessions, do the study guides, and you're all set!

Dr. Dean was an amazing professor! His lectures are straightforward and he even provides study guides. Bio isnt easy and the quarter goes fast so attendance at lectures is necessary. He goes slow and you can tell he loves his job. He was even great in lab. He had a TA but showed up every day to help and converse with the students. I recommend him!

Prof Dean is so easy going and easy to understand. He uses slides in lectures but doesn't just read off of them, he actually explains everything in detail and ensures you understand things. If he is answering your question, he won't move on until he actually knows you get it which is great.

He explains everything so well. I left every single lecture knowing everything he taught. Obviously content load is a lot so you need to study since there are hundreds of terms you need to know but overall he was amazing at explaining everything. Super nice, super funny too

Dean was such a good professor from actually teaching material that sticks from lecture, and having online quizzes for extra practice. Very flexible for his office hours or if you need help understanding any material. Made me actually feel interested in learning about plant anatomy and did well in the course

Took Dr. Dean again for BIO193 and he's very passionate about plants. There is a lot of content in this course so you need to study things as soon as you learn them. Shares his lecture slides and answers questions in class. There are also weekly lecture quizzes. Very kind professor!

Dr. Dean was a great professor, although at times it was difficult to keep up with his fast-paced style. In order to understand the information, I had to view the recorded lecture in addition to attending lecture. Exam averages for our class were 49% and 65%. however he does not curve his exams. He doesn't have set office hours either.

Dr. Dean is a very caring and knowledgeable professor. Always answered questions during lecture. A lot of material (expect to take many notes and study a lot). His is teaching style is old-school, it isn't for everyone. He's organized, but attending lectures is super helpful, because slides don't contain many notes. Has review days for tests.

Dr. Dean is such a king. Was great in lectures and lab...paying attention is a big part of getting a decent grade which can be hard because he talks for an hour and a half straight (with some good jokes throughout). A heads up is that he does not curve/give extra credit but makes up for it by being a great professor!
