NEVER NEVER... Ask questions and get the evil look. Raise your hand and be overlooked. Why must we understand the HISTORY of Math when we just want to get it over with!...
I took the class with the commenter below me. As long as you pay attention, do the homework, study outside of class, you will get a good gade. The commenter below me was immature, asked the dumbest questions, didn't raise her hand and just pissed people off. Dedinsky is a good math teacher. You just have to be willing to learn.
Absolutely brutal. Takes time for questions, but answers in a roundabout way that leaves you even more confused. Seems to be more interested in personal stories than actually teaching. Basically demands you learn logically; bristles if you prefer an alternate method. Made so many mistakes the class was forced to check him each step of an example.
This guy is boring. Bored me to tears. The only thing more boring than the math are his lame anecdotes. He is a clear teacher, he paces the class way too slow, and he gives easy tests. Before each test is a helpful study guide that has similar questions to everything on the real test. This class is easy. His smile is creepy. Real creepy.
Dedinsky is a good professor if you are interested in learning math. He explains well and doesn't make you feel stupid for asking a question. I got an A in his math C and finite math classes. You need to do the hmwk.
If you lission to his lecture, do homewor, you'll get high score for sure. Test is the same as homework. No quiz. I got 100% for all the tests. Text book is not needed if you take notes in class! good luck.
Explains concepts well, goes through every detail of the lab, curves the test... one must make F a goal to fail.
He explains math really well. No need for textbook, good notes is all you need. The test is based on HW questions; study HW, you do well! He welcomes every question you have and wants you to do well. Encourages logic, not just memorizing. He is a good teacher and would take his class again.
He is hard. Doesn't give problems from the book. Makes his own homework problems which are the tricky ones. You have to attend class or you won't know what the homework is. Grades your homework from 2,1, or 0. I don't doubt that hes not smart its just that he is not good at explaining it. If you are bad at math I don't think you should take him.
Textbook is never used. Exams are based on his homework problems. Sometimes, they are even identical to the homework. Teaching style is a little bit hard to understand because he skips a lot of steps to get to the final answer. He gives "liberal" curves on the test, so again, just learn to do his homework problems and you'll pass.
His style teaching is "liberal". No textbook! All test base on HW! Do the HW and try to understanding it. You will get A. Need to attend the class to know the HW thought!
he is very good teacher,,i like he's teaching style..
Do the Homework problems u will get an easy A. to be honest u can even memorize the HW problems. The tests are exactly the same as his HW. If u cant get math easily n u r not a fast person to get math, he will be hard to understand for u. otherwise he is awesome. Not very helpful in his office hours.
Well, Professor Dedinsky is one of the greatest professor I ever had. I took Calculus course (Math 3A) with him and I love the course but his teaching methodology was poor. He didn't write word problems on the board. He only imagined & drew it so, it's pretty hard to understand the concept by yourself. But, he is an easy guy and fair in grading too
Professor Dedinsky is one of the best Professors @ MC. The course is tough but if you really understand the homework problems the exams are almost similar and would be an easy "A". But his teaching methodology is very hard if you are not a Math guy specially. Attending the class is really helpful coz you will get a lot of tips.No text book required
Mr. Dedinsky is a phenomenal professor because he's can be flexible if students have questions on homework. He doesn't mind answering questions. He's respectful of students' questions and is open. For someone whose strength isn't in Math, you have to invest additional time in learning the math concepts because Dedinske tends to skip lots of steps
Worst teacher ever, easy class if u already knoe everything
Very hard teacher. I am not smart at all but I was lucky enough to pass. You will have to be naturally good at math to pass this class or study very hard. His explanations were all right I could barely keep up with him. Quote: "math you either get it or you don't." he said this himself. But I don't want to be too mean he is a good guy, just hard.
If you attend class and take notes( this is mandatory because he doesnt use the book ), the class is simple. His tests questions are taken from the homework. Will be taking him for Math2 next semester!
One of the best teachers at MC. The test questions come directly from the homework, and the homework is only to review your notes from class. Every test question is answered in class prior to the test... how much easier can it get?
I'll be upfront..if Math is your thing, then you will really enjoy this teacher. If it isn't, and in order to understand the material, you need to do homework with numbers instead of proofs, then try enrolling with another teacher, chances are you will be struggling. It really depends on how comfortable you are with Math and your learning style.
Not my most favorite teacher in the world. He is diffucult to follow sometimes and he goes really fast during lecture. Whatever he tells you is going to be on the test, is GOING TO BE ON THE TEST. His class is hard to take, but if you do love math and love learning it, he may be the right teaher for you.
He doesn't use a text book. He's very VERY condescending. When someone asks a question, he makes you feel dumb. As if your answer is so TRIVIAL. Thats why nobody wants to ask questions. Not helpful. His notes arent always clear. He goes too fast, hardly anybody gets it. I have the right to say he sucks because I got an A still.
Definitely very condescending. Goes over the information too quickly. Basically, you can just memorize all the theorems since his tests are all based on these theorems. Not really much room in the class for actually understanding them.
GREAT TEACHER! One of the best professors at Mission College.
He is easiest teacher to me when I took in summer. All test are in homework which he solved in class, and you just need to understand how to solve them or you learn by heart if you can. I studied Art 4 much more than this class when I took 2 class in summer. He gave some interesting stories about math. I and my friend got A in his class with ease.
He's a really good teacher, but he likes his proofs a little too much sometimes. His exams are based on the questions he gives you the solution to before, so you're reprinting what he told you. only HW is to study the given work He knows A LOT, so if you dont get it just ask him, cause that's really the only way to really get the stuff. overall: :D
He's a great teacher clearly knows what he talks about, its amazing :D you might have a slight problem following cause of his speed test are based on the problems given and solved in class so you need to know how you do it and you'll get an A on the test doesn't really give you practice so if you need extra help, ask him directly only way to get it
TAKE GOOD NOTES and review/practice the concepts and you will ace this class. The problems he does on the board are the ones on the test. He may go over around 100 or so problems and pick 14 to be on the test. Proofs/Challenging problems are almost a guarantee on the test. No homework. Takes attendance. "Math: You get it, or you dont." - Dedinsky
Calc 2 isnt an easy class and to have a prof that structure his class to where anyone could pass is amazing. This prof is a little TOO much into proofs but he is really good compare to other profs out there! Take this class & u should pass if you just study the homework problems!
Dedinsky lectures fast and hard to follow, especially the messy steps of how to solve a problem. When you ask him a question, he will giggle and be kind of rude. In addition, he does not respond to email. His tests are more like homework-based and follow mostly on theorem proofs. Good luck!
Dedinsky is a great professor but he tends to skip steps a lot, which makes it hard to follow at times. His exams are EXACTLY similar to homework problems that he goes over in class. Sounds easy, but def. put in work. His lectures are broken into sections; this was how I studied and I thought it really helped me learn patterns and concepts easier.
i never made a rating on rmp however u guys need to know this is hands down the best class to take if you need calculus. i didnt know any algebra (didnt know how to even factor) and i have one of the highest grades, he believes ur grade is reflected by the amount of work you put into the class. you have to put ALOT, ALOT of work but youll get an A.
Very reasonable professor. If you just concentrate and study seriously, you should be able to ace his class. He seems to be very obsessed with proofs though!
His lecture is fast, so you need to copy what he writes fast and w/o mistakes. His exams are from the note, so there is no curve ball in exams. But u need to memorize 45-60 problems for 10-12 exam q.s. If u are good at memorizing take his class, if not consider other professor. He is very helpful and patiently will answer everything.
He really knows what he is teaching. you should take him if you want to learn about Math
He is ok. I got Bs on both of his midterms. He is obsessed with proofs. His exams are not too hard. He pulled one exam on a curve. Not a bad professor.
He is very helpful. I learned from him a lot even though many students said he is not teaching. I don't agree. If you study, you absolutely learn.
Dedinsky is a great teacher and very helpful. I got an A with moderate effort. I highly recommend him.
You don't need text book, only notes are enough, evithing on midterms and final from notes.U don't learn anything and 90% chances that you won't get A in 4A,4B or 4C because of this class. He will teach you that stuff, which is nt gng to use in next classes.Although i got A,i regret.Plz undst. MATH is logic,Only 200 problems r not enough 2 master class
He was okay. Really obsessed with proofs. His final however was so hard that everyone did poorly and he curbed it. I got a B even with the final being so bad.
great professor! learned alot from him
He wants his students to succeed. You will leave the course as a better student. The class is straight forward and easy. He does problems in class and the exact same problems he does in class are the problems that are going to be on the test. If you spend sometime reviewing your notes every week you should get an A. He is a very lenient grader.
He expects everyone to memorize at least 60-70 problems for the test. All proofs. Such a useless class. He tells you ahead of what's going to be on the test. But Chances are that you will do poorly in your next level of math. Take another professor if you want to learn. If you have the ability to memorize math problem and an easy A class, take him!
Not the best teacher if you want to learn. He will only make you memorize proofs. Most of the time he doesnt even know what he is doing. He makes many mistakes while he is doing problems. I took math 3b with him and i regret it. Since I am take 4a now and I'm having a hard time.
His approach is very different compared to most math teachers I had. He gives out a FAT load of questions prior to the test, around 60-70 and you only see about 14 of them in your final, so you end up wasting a lot of time studying, if you wanna do good in the final then study only the last 25 questions. I failed his final but I passed the class
He doesn't give you any "homework". During class. he will present the questions and do them step by step. If you put in time to study those questions and understand the theorems, you don't need to memorize anything for his test. He's very knowledgeable and I enjoyed every secs of his lecture. It is a challenging class nonetheless.
This is a challenging class. However, if you keep reviewing your notes after class and understand how to do all problems that he marked for "test," then you'll do well. I love this class and the way Dr. Dedinsky taught us. After taking his class, I find math interesting and would love to learn further in this subject.
Took him for math2,3A,3B and got all A's. No book. He gives the problems & solutions and marks them as test questions. The homework is to review the test questions. He marks 50+ q's but picks ~10 for exams. If you take time to understand and learn the material then there is very little need to memorize. I enjoyed his class and loved his approach.
I love this class!! I really enjoyed Math when I took Professor Dedinsky's class. If you're interested in Math, you should definitely take his class. If you do extra homework that relate to his theorems, you'll be able to solve ALL the problems quickly. You'll learn from him a lot of intelligent shortcuts too. Awesome teacher!!! :)
Very specific down to the point. Test based exactly what is in notes. Will only accept his solution and will not accept others. Any advance theorems to find the same answer will not be accepted. If you are good at memorizing you will do good. Expect to spend 10+ hours memorizing
He's super easy. He note the test questions on his lectures which are his hand writing every class, and the tests were 98% the same with his notes. He gave 4 extra credits. This class didn't need textbook. Take his class to get B or A on Math.
Professor Dedinsky has a different approach to teaching. He wants his students to academically succeed, but it all depends on the student. He gives the lecture and states what's on the test. Learning the material is A LOT better than memorizing the Q+A's. He uses plenty of mathematics vocabulary, but if you look up the meaning, it will help you.
I've always had trouble at math, and Dedinsky changed my whole perspective, BE PREPARED to spend hours studyingmemorizing theorems! A lot of other students struggled around me for this six week class, but I passed with an A! What is on the test is EXACTLY in the notes; the only way to fail is to not even try.
if you love maths he is definetly your professor. i have taken so make professors that are rated highly but John dedinsky is my best . he really teaches you math with logic instead of how to solve problems. he is the only teacher that understood mathimatical thinking and new ways . i am waiting to take him again
Would take again. Prof has an unorthodox way of teaching maths which has made me appreciate it as a study in a way I haven't before. I'd recommend him for math lovers or math haters. No Book/HW Prob Tips for success: If Math3a, review trig and pre calc stuff beforehand, itl make more easier Form a study group/buddy Prof is there for you, ask ?s.
Good teacher overall. If you don't like math this isn't the class for you! No homework at all. Tough tests but good grader!
I would take this professor again not only because the tests were not so hard but rather because he makes it real easy. However you definitely have to learn the material, so that you do well on the test. Spending a bunch of time must be usual for such material, else failure may result. No extra credit Really helpful, but mandatory attendance
BEST math teacher ever. Don't confuse a good teacher with an easy class, because the subject matter (come on, we're talking about pre-calc) is not easy. No textbooks and no unannounced tests. Tests are based on lectures which he posts online. Initially seems mean, but is really caring. 10/10. Taking him for calc 1 in fall.
He's a good teacher. Yes, all his test are based off of lectures, but take your chance on asking help from him, he's willing to help. Nice and patient teacher. I would definitely take any of class again.
If you plan to take his class, pay close attention to his lectures, it actually mirrors what's going to be on the test. If you don't understand, ask him, he looks intimidating but he is a nice guy. Taking him for 3b
He is a nice professor! He answers you kindly anytime if you question. Also, you have to understand or even master all the notes which assigned by him during the lectures. The note will DECIDE your final grade although it has tons of proofs!!! Be ready!
Solid professor for calculus. Take notes because you will see them again in his exams. If you don't understand the concept, ask him help. He makes Calculus much, much simpler for you. Take his class.
He's a good teacher. If you attend lectures and pass all his exams, you can get an A. I would practice the problems rather than memorizing proofs to help you give a better understanding of Calculus. Take his class.
He's really helpful. Everything in the notes is on the test but I would practice more problem rather than memorizing notes. If you do this, test is going to be easy for you. He will make you like math.
Took him for calc 2 and now calc 3. Dedinsky was so helpful and wants his students to academically succeed. I recommend his class.
Not for multivariable calculus! Very little visuals implemented in his lectures. Imagine learning how to knit with only words. His class notes are his tests. approximately 50-60 pages of notes. He does not go by text books. HIS HANDWRITING IS NOT LEGIBLE. 3-4 mistakes per lecture. Seems like a nice guy. But very frustrating to learn from.
His style of teaching is very straightforward copy the notes and mark the problems he tells you are on the exams. He gives you about 100 pages of notes and in those notes there are 40 possible exam questions and he chooses 10 of those 40. I recommend working on the proofs because those that time to understand.
Good luck reading this professor notes. It is impossible to decipher his notes. He does pull exam questions from the notes which is helpful if you can remember all 100 pages of notes.
He tells you that 50 problems could potentially be on the midterm, but only 10 of those 50 are. Study those problems thoroughly and you'll be fine. For the final, he gave us 90 potential problems because he wants us to practice a variety of problems. The homework is to study the potential exam problems. He's really friendly, so ask questions!
Gives you potential questions for the midterms. No homework, attendance not mandatory. But if you don't attend class and don't do the potential questions, you will fail. Great professor, you can feel his passion for math. The potential problems are usually the toughest questions with a lot of algebra tricks, so brush up on your algebra
He is so strict! and he teaches so bad! I love math but now in this class, I didn't like to even listen to him. His teaching is very boring and difficult to understand! he writes the answers in the class and he has the questions on the site, so you have to write the solution without question! you don't have enough time to write the question as well
Taking Dedinsky for MAT4A and he's super easy. Lectures are heavy & sometimes boring. He marks potential test Q's & only 10-12 are on the test. He recently started doing quizzes every class but he tells you what problem you should study. You can do the quizzes at the end of the lecture if you come in late. 2 midterms & final. I recommend for 4A.
He's a great professor. Gives you the potential questions which will be asked during the exam. He takes attendance but it's not going to effect your grade that much. Recently starting to give quizzes every day but he tells you the quiz question. It's an easy class as long as u do ALL the potential questions. There is no homework
Math 4a is well known to be difficult. Dedinsky makes this class easier for you to understand. He will give the questions for quizzes and mark potential questions for exams. It's an easy A if you put time studying it.
I took his Calculus 1 in spring 2019. This class is not difficult if you really pay attention and do a daily work. He let you know ahead potential questions in daily Quiz and Midterm/ Final. He grades easy, but no extra credit. Midterm 1 and Final is manageable, midterm 2 is the hardest test in an entire semester.
Good professor. Easy if u put in the time and effort. His notes are sometimes difficult but he marks the potential questions, so it's a fair game. He's really sweet and helpful. 2 midterm, a final and daily quizzes and he tells the quiz question.
His exams are potential questions from his notes. Make sure you understand the material. He gives quiz and tells you the question. Easy A if you study the material.
He makes more mistakes than most teachers and he expects his students to find his mistakes even though we're busy trying to learn what he's teaching us. His handwriting is very sloppy so it can be hard to understand some of his notes and my last complaint is that he only posts notes on canvas, I can't even see what my grade is for his class online.
Spends most of class time doing problems on the projector and then he publishes them online, although his handwriting is very difficult to read and he skips important steps, so you need to attend class. He assumes you have a strong math background. Study by practicing the marked test questions. Pro tip: Make a summary sheet of each concept to study
Johns math classes are formatted weirdly comparing to the other math teachers. Instead of showing us applications, he gets to focused on theorems. The way he teaches the material does not make sense. If you are good at memorizing. U should be fine with him. If not good at memorizing, then it will be tough.
Prof. Dedinsky is amazing! He tells you all of the potential test questions beforehand and is true to his word. There's no homework, only practicing the 50+ potential test problems. He curves his tests (most of the time it benefits the class average) and also has extra credit too. Just make sure to do practice the problems he gives you. Easy A!
I took his 3B class, the material was really hard especially the midterm 2 and final. However, he spent time to explain and made sure your questions answered. In my class, he caught few cheaters, so if you tried to cheat on his test. Enter as your own risked. Make sure you spend enough time to understand his materials and concepts. Asking is a key
I only decided to take his class because of his decent rating: bad idea. Unable to explain trivial concepts simply; it always has to be long drawn out proofs. The majority of your learning will be done on your own time. Ridiculously hard test questions. Like someone said here before, it's learning knitting without any pictures; there are 0 visuals.
Doesn't explain well.
Dedinsky is the best prof for people that have a decent math base. He has a 200 page document of questions for the course that he slowly works through in lecture and he teaches you everything from that. Study off of his marked test questions on the document and you'll get an A. Exams are extremely fair and super short and easy.
Be prepared to teach yourself. He doesn't use a textbook, and his 200-page document is very disorganized. I took this class during COVID-19 and the exams were created at the last-minute. Unforgiving grader ( mean on final was 59%). Condescending remarks like "this is something you should know."
Exams often had nothing to do with the homework he gave but instead tested you on a few basic skills and a proof for something a skill which he gives no guidance on how to go about. Test material is Unclear he gives you concepts but nothing to get an idea of how it will look on the test, he doesn't do review sessions and instead moves ahead.
Great teacher with a solid lecture. Speaks fast but the material is amazing and comprehensible.
VERY theory based. Be prepared to memorize theorems and proofs. Not very interactive with students during lectures. Approachable enough but doesn't really help. Little to no homework but all of your studying should be on memorizing theorems and examples he labels as 'potential test questions'. Exam problems are tweaked test questions, or verbatim.
If you ever wonder what it feels like to be completely lost despite paying attention to lectures, hes the professor that will give you that exact feeling. Lectures were not just heavy but it was too much information to take at a time. Gets way too focused on theorems rather than actual math. Id highly encourage you to avoid taking him.
He is very passionate and knowledgeable. He teaches using a 200 page document with various problems. Some of these questions are marked as potential test questions, so the test questions are directly from the lecture. Ask if you don't understand something; he explains very clearly. Pay attention in class, try your best, and practice makes perfect!
dedinsky marks what's going to be on the test. even though majority of the test questions he marks are theorems, as long as you understand what's going on in the theorems and memorize them, you should be fine. what if you aren't good at memorizing? well, put in some work memorizing those theorems. for linear algebra, they're pretty hefty.
His lectures were boring to sit through because there wasn't really any enthusiasm behind his voice. However, everything is about memorization. There are 10 questions on each test (3 tests total + are curved) and of the 10 you will see in the lectures. If you can review 30 minutes a day it should be a cake walk...
His lectures are somewhat heavy if you don't pay attention to them. The test will be 100% based on his lectures and he will arrange the grade based on the test's result.
I had Professor Dedinsky for Math for Liberal arts, it is his first time teaching this course so everything was new to him.I can see he is a good professor but I didn't enjoy his teaching style. whole class period it's mainly notes, very little homework and we had 2 tests only. I tried my best in class but it was very difficult to learn from him
I took this class for dual enrollment, he tells you exactly what's going to be on each midterm and final so its very easy to study for it, if you put in like 4 hours before each test its possible to get a 100%, he curves the midterms very generously (for one of them a 68% was a B), and there's barely any homework and all the homework is optional.
Wide amount of exams adding up to 60% on your grade, eg 2 exams, each worth 30% (up to 6 exams). I had 2 exams before the final, they'll mess ur grade if u dont do well. Practice given problems multiple times AND learn the concepts. He often skips over important steps in class bc too "trivial." Hw's worth nothing. Very passionate abt math tho
I took his MAT-003A course just to solve the problems related to limits, derivatives, and integrals. He was an okay prof, to be honest, but his way of proving the theorems step-by-step was a complete nightmare for me, as well as hearing "this is something you should know". In addition, during lectures, his handwriting was difficult to read.
He uses a 170pg document for notes. Not a lot of HW is assigned, but he marks a lot of class examples as "potential test questions" to be solved. Yes, he puts a fair amount of them on the test for the given chapters, often verbatim, but proofs are usually included. Tests are curved nicely (73% = B).
He expects you to understand or practice ~60 pages per exam and he will put about 10-20 of them (marked as 10 questions with parts [a.] and [b.]). Curves are pretty large (70% = B), (~80%=A). Expect 2-3 tests to determine your grade. You get to know all questions beforehand as they appear on the exam. He's great and motivated -- just don't be lazy.
Professor Dedinsky is great—no homework, just pay attention in class. He clearly explains a 150-page doc and selects 10 key questions from 60 possible test question on the exams., some tough but manageable. Two drill tests are reviewed step by step. If you stay focused, the class is very doable and well-organized. Highly recommended.
This professor is good only if you have great memory and are willing to devote all your spare time to this class. His style of teaching makes you throw logic out the window and memorize page long proofs for problems instead. He also grades only based on tests, and his tests are incredibly difficult, as you try in vain to remember steps for proofs.
Prof. Dedinsky is great! The key is to practice the test questions he marks during lectures on a weekly basis and build fluency. He can move a bit fast during lectures, but honestly if you get lost don't be shy to ask questions, he does his best to help out. The tests are all curved and he gives partial credit. Don't slack off and you'll be fine!
Math is my favorite subject, but I struggled to enjoy it in this class. Even though I ended up with an A, I don't feel like I actually learned much. His teaching style focused heavily on memorization rather than understanding or logical thinking. I wouldn't recommend this class if you're someone who values deep conceptual learning.
Genuinely easy A even though I got a B. I should have studied for the second midterm. He is a clear grader and he is an expert in proofs and is perfect for linear Algebra. This was the best class I took in math so far. Its reasoning and memorization but if you have strong reasoning you barley have to memorize. the tests are generously curved.
Everyone says this professor is difficult but the difficult ones are the students who don't appreciate his teaching and patience. He gives you the test questions and the lecture are really easy to understand. He is also very good at updating the notes on canvas and is a very easy grader. I'm gate keeping this class. easy A
So easy to get an A, genuinely an easy class because he literally gives you the test questions. Out of 60 questions 10-15 of them are on each midterm. So so easy if u just practice or even memorize the questions and answers you can get an A. He's a really easy grader.
Amazing but lecture heavy. Easy to get an A
He gives you all the test questions so its easy to get an A but you HAVE to set aside time to study. Attendance is very important. He grades based on vibes so if you get all As but a B on the final he gives you a B. Theres no percentage or grade calculation just vibes so you really don't know what your grade will be.
Good professor if you want to get an easy A. Text questions are given in advance and the test is announced two weeks before the exam, so you have time to go over the material. The Professor gives you the benefit of the doubt when grading. Attendance boosts your grade. Class emphasizes memorization over application, which could be a problem for some
A few good things about this class are that the professor is actually really nice and he never assigns us homework/quizzes for any class day. Otherwise, avoid this class if you don't like memorization since we always had to memorize so many notes written in order to prepare and get good grades on the exams.
Exams are based potential marked questions. However, this method of testing will force you to memorize more over learning topics unfortunately. Coming from me i got a good grade in this dude, learn how to memorize rather than learn.
