Wrote his own book and basically reads it off in lecture. Essay exams mean work

funny and straightforward
good teacher, hard exams, lots of reading

I would reccomend Human Sexuality to anyone; it's just a little creepy that a husband/wife wrote the book together.
Not a bad professor, but there is really no mention of the readings (which there are copious amounts of) in lecture, but the exams still ask a lot of questions on them.
He's not a "bad" teacher. Just not always 100% nice, and kind of creepy. A running joke with me and my friends.
Not bad at all. Difficult tests considering the material is so easy and (sometimes) interesting. I've had worse.
For as easy as the subject matter is, I thought the class was hard. The tests are extremely difficult. I felt like they didn't test if we had knowledge of the core issues but if we could recall random, small parts from readings. If you take this class know all the texts like the back of your hand.
this class is awsome! There is tons of reading, and not just the book plus there are two 2 page papers that you have to write but they are rather easy. He is pretty funny and plays good music before class starts. The exams are a little tricky, but its mostly the short sentence part that gets you. He will teach you EVERYTHING about sex.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! IT IS A GPA KILLER! its true that johnny boy is a running joke with my friends but his tests are a piss poor refelction of any knowledge you may gain in the course. You are responsible for esoteric and pointless information. His communication with his TAs is atrocious and I would hihgly recommend you find another GPA booster
This is the most infomative class you will ever take. You will have no questions about sex when you are finished. He is really good in lecture. The tests can be a bit tricky, but if you use the online quizes you will be fine.
Very Informative. A good life lesson class.
Don't be fooled...the mnusic he plays at the beginning of class is pretty crappy :) It's an alright class...lectures get a bit boring, and tests seem to sometimes ask quesions about those things you think are really insignificant. Subject material is pretty interesting though.
The material is obviously fun but you have to be prepared to do a lot of reading. Some of the TAs are really picky too. Great Class tho, highly recommended.
TERRIBLE!! Loved the information in the class, hated the way the professor taught. Lectures are very disorganized, the tests are very very picky and he does not even listen when the TA's input. Overall, definately one of the worst Professors I have ever had. It is a shame that such an interesting class has to be taught in this way.
Don't study, you will still do bad. TA's grade short answer questions individually (by their own standards) but the ENTIRE class is curved together. If you get a tough TA, you're screwed. Prof wrote the book, but says different things in lecture. THEN, tests ya on what he said in one of those. memorize all his buds who are researchers too.
Class in general was interesting, but lecture was boring and filled with (what you think are) trivial facts, the papers were uninteresting and dull, and tests were pretty terrible--way too picky about unimportant things. I was luck and got a good TA, but even then, discussion was just repetitive.
I really enjoyed this class and the material, but lectures were rather boring and filled with numerous numbers and facts. Tests were challenging and always covered a lot of information. Go to lecture because a lot of questions from the tests are discussed there and if at all possible, avoid the urge to fall asleep! I learned a lot. A lot of reading
Such a fun class. Funny guy, tests can be a little tricky. Go to lecture and you'll be good.
You go into this class thinking, hey, this is sex class, I know pretty much already and hey, maybe I could learn some new tips on getting into the sexual mind of my significant other. WRONG! This class is uninteresting and far more a sociology, fact-based,rather than an interesting sex class. Save the 4 credits (and agony)!
Class is pretty interesting, but tests are much harder than is expected. However, it's a generous curve - I did pretty crappy on the tests and still got an A. The TAs are nice, but have no idea what the Prof is doing, so they can't help you much. Look over the old tests before the final, they will use the same questions for the culmuative part.
Much more difficult than it should be. Do not take this class if you are trying to take an easy filler. Keep track of unimportant statistics from lecture and in the book - they will get used. And the test review is your best friend for the final, even though they don't let you keep the papers.
this class is way harder than you expect it to be. the tests are really specific and hard. the material is really easy so to make up for that the tests are really hard and test you on the most specific little facts and details and its almost impossible to study for them.
If you go to lecture you will be pretty much set. Lots of note taking and make sure you go to the bulletin board before the tests because there are always questions from there. Very interesting course. Highly recommended.
john is a very hard teacher. its not hard material just very specific exams and using examples from class are imperitive (especially for his 530 exams), the 160 exams were a bit ridiculous and virtually impossible to study everything for. 530 is just boring and he seems like he's got way more important things to do with his time
This class is boring and the exams ask for very specific information. The papers do not really help with learning the material either.
Class is interesting. He knows what he's talking about. The tests are ridiculous. The most specific things that you wouldn't even think to study because they are so stupid will be on the exams.
Loved the class. He is a great professor, kept me engaged. Provided good information. Pretty easy if you study for the tests, and papers are easy as well.
I didn't particularly enjoy this class. It's a LOT of specific information to memorize for each test, which makes them quite difficult. He also makes some very liberal remarks about sexuality that sometimes throw you off guard. You must use the textbook he wrote and read a separate novel about sexuality which was absolutely impossible to read.
Lectures are quite interesting and using the CPS pads keeps you engaged. Papers were also easy and T.A. s are very helpful, however, tests are EXTREMELY specific and there are many random statistical questions. be prepared to study very hard if you want to test well
Soc 160 is a very interesting class and Delamater is a good lecturer, I would recommend this class,It's not easy but those who say his tests are rediculous are lazy. Study and you'll be fine, plus the papers usually aren't hard and you get points just for showing up for section. If you want an A you should be able to get one: go to class and read
This course exceeded my expectations. Delamater is an excellent professor- the lectures were well-prepared and clearly presented. There was a good mix of videos/documentaries, lecture, textbook reading, and sociology/research articles. The exams were a bit difficult for me, but if you put in the time and effort they are do-able.
good class....lots of info learned that EVERYONE should know...its not easy, but its very bearable if you can put in a little bit of effort. delamater is a good/knowledgable lecturer, but i dont really like him as a person.
I actually really liked this class even though most of my friends hated it. The class was really interesting, and I learned a lot. However, be warned that this is NOTTTTTT an easy A....you read the ENTIRE textbook and about 28 or so articles. I think everyone should take this class, for the information alone :)
This is a class that is filled to the brim with useful everyday information. The myth of "super specific" questions is a little bit exaggerated. If there are any specific questions they will come from your lecture notes. He usually has a very straightforward slide presentation each day which makes taking notes easy. The tests are mainly MC. B+
I LUV THIS CLASS. I'm actually sad I'm done with it. Despite what you may think it is a challenging course. He expects a lot on his tests so tests are difficult and filled with tiny details. You need to study for this class but it's fun studying...look at the subject matter; sexuality. It is also helpful if you have a good TA.
Most of the info you have heard a million times before. Not very interesting, but also very easy. Go to lecture and take notes, read the book, you'll do fine. You only need to spend a few minutes skimming each article, I never read one through. The online tests that he gives you the link to are GREAT for studying.
Wonder teacher with a true passion for his subject (Hell, who doesn't like sex?). Very effective communicator and possesses the ability to present the material in a scientific yet down to earth fashion. He is a joy to listen to and gets very animated at times so you won't be bored with the class. TONS of reading and the 2 papers suck though
Expect to take a lot of detailed notes in this class in order to do well. Thus, expect to go to EVERY lecture (important). Make sure you do all of the readings as well. Basically, you need to work your butt off in this class to get an A... not as easy as you think...
Horrible class. please do not take it.
He's a good teacher who knows what he's talking about. He makes the class interesting and it isn't that bad for a 4 credit course, just a ton of reading.
Much tougher course than it sounds. Professor knows his stuff, but tests are real picky and there is a ton of reading, including online articles that are torture to get through. Papers are easy and will raise your grade though.
This class is very interesting, but it might be different than what people expect because it really deals with a lot of theories and psychological factors about sex. Overall, I still enjoyed the class a lot and would recommend both the class and Professor D. P.S. It's not an easy class either, you have to try hard if you want to get a good grade.
Very interesting class, but harder than it sounds!! Delamater really knows his stuff, and the readings are really interesting (but get long!) Take this class if you're willing to work and want to have some fun!
This class is very hard. Extremely text intensive. u need to go to lecture, too. about 2 questions from each lecture are on the exam. Don't put the reading off or u won't keep up. My TA wasnt great so the papers didnt help my grade much. Class is interesting and tells much useful info, but only take it if ur prepared to work!
REVIEW MIDTERMS WHILE STUDYING FOR THE FINAL!! there are soooo many questions from previous exams on the final!!! go in to your TA and look over the correct answers - trust me... ull be thankful u did!
I love this class! Extremely infomative, fascinating subject matter. Tests are hard, and you have to read a LOT, but it's worth it. Definitely not an easy A, but I highly recommend it!
The class was boring and I don't feel like I learned that much...you don't have to read the book you just need to skim it for the specific things that the papers and exams ask for.
dr. delamater is a fun prof, and my TA was really cool, so i liked the class a lot. the tests are really hard and unpredictable, and going to lecture is really helpful because there are 2 questions from each lecture on the test. overall, it's a really good class but you have to work really hard!
I thought the class would be more interesting than it was. You pretty much need to read the book and go to lecture because questions are directly from it. discussions for the class are useless, they do nothing to help you to understand the material.
Lecture is highly organized but overall the course isn't very focused-- almost all the theories you look at are discordant with one another, making it hard to keep things straight on exams. You need to read the book and go to lecture to do well. Other than exams, your grade is based on discussion attendance, 1 essay, and 1 group presentation.
Really interesting class. You do need to go to lecture, read the book, and the powerwebs to do well. Discussion is pointless. A lot of work, but i still enjoyed the class:)
going to lecture and doing your readings is a must!! very very useful class tho. wish i had known all this stuff years ago. you'll learn a lot if you take this class seriously. but you def have to work hard to get a good grade! exams are tough and discussion is useless (but still mandatory). this class should be required for graduating!
Really interesting stuff. Careful on the paper (only peer-reviewed articles) and the final is cumulative.
I liked this course a lot. Make sure you go to lecture though because many questions on the test are straight out of what he says in lecture. The class isn't as easy as you think it's going to be, so make sure you study, but I wouldn't say it's difficult either.
His lectures are pretty boring and I found myself never paying attention. It's still a pretty easy class. Just 4 papers and two exams. He gives out the questions that will be on the test about 2 weeks ahead of time so it makes it really easy to study for.
Prof. Delamater is old and dry. Whoever thinks he is fun probably likes chess. The class is about sex- great material, but it would be better in anyone elses hands. No review in discussions allowed, he should retire, but the class is cool.
This class would have been more interesting if a different person was teaching it. Delamater is really boring and it is too bad because he is teaching an awesome subject...sex! I recommend this class, but try and take it with his wife, I heard that she is better and makes the class fun (they switch off semesters)
The class was a bit challenging with all the materials, but totally worth it. You learn a lot about sex that you would have never guessed. It's pretty straight forward. A lot of people complained that he was boring, but I liked his lectures for the most part. It's a good course. Take it!!
Worst class I have ever taken. The format is formulaic and boring. He wrote the textbook used for the class and basically just reads out of it. The textbook is awful. There is no point in going to class. The exams are hard and do not actually test your knowledge.
I took this class purely for psychology (not due to a peculiar interest in sex). The book was extremely graphic. I am upset to admit I have flash cards on positions. He is ok at teaching but it disturbs me that he did research on the topic and wrote the book with his wife (the parentheses are creepy too in the book). Short Answers are rough.
Anyone who thinks this class is hard should not be in college! Seriously. It's an appropriate amount of work. Don't sign up for this class thinking you're gonna watch**** all day and have sex for homework. It is a college course! If you study, you will do well.
the beginning of the class was really fun..good lectures and interesting material..but it gets boring at the end because he teaches it straight from the book..VERY hard tests--you have to study or you will fail...average score on a test is about a 35/60 but it's curved
I just finished this course. Honestly, it is not an very easy course, but I won't say it is hard, either. You must go to lecture (which is hard since it starts at 8:50 am), And You MUST read the book. Get a general idea of powerweb reading. And be sure you go to the discussion before the exam. You will get at least a B in this class.
Do all the readings! His exam is straightly from notes and textbook reading. My native language is not English, so too much reading is a hard work for me. But I still get a AB in this course. Very useful and fun material. Girls learn how to protect themselves. And Be sure you know yr TA! Go to office hour and talk!!! It is helpful for yr paper
Great class, but intense (4 credits). A ton of reading that you must do all of if you want a good grade. The tests are tricky and you must memorize a lot (STUDY HARD!). Go to lecture and take good notes. Discussion is mostly worthless but they take attendance. Expect to spend lots of time on work for this class, but its worth it.
I got an A but did not enjoy lecture one bit! He just stands there, monotonously spewing out fact after fact, too fast to write down. His personal bias distorts the information that he presents to you, but don't worry, there's a book too -- that he wrote! Seems full of himself and gets mad at the class for packing up one minute before the bell.
I am a junior with a 4.0 and I got my first B in this class, so I may be a little bitter. This class sucked!!! I had high hopes but delamater and his TA don't care about anyone. the curve is a joke. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
An interesting class, but A LOT of material. Putting a lot of work into this class is a must, otherwise you will not do well. Disc. is pointless, yet mandatory. DeLamater is not that bad, but I have heard better things about his wife so try taking this class in the spring semester.
I would not wish this class on a man with whom my wife had cheated on me. If you prefer a more straightforward recommendation than that, let me just say, do not take this class.
Professor DeLAMEter is terrible. Spews out of context information with little scientific grounding. Sociology is inductive, questionable crap. This class is probably the worst class I have ever taken, including high school.
I would not recommend this class at all. Loads of reading and difficult tests. Powerweb readings are what make the class terrible. There are 2 research type essays which are really stupid. Taking this class would be a huge mistake.
This was a great class. It was not hard, as people have commented. It's really interesting information, so it's easy to learn. The tests were fair. My TA didn't seem to know much about the material (the class corrected her often), but when it came to paper grading she was really fair. Highly recommend this class.
Awesome class! The textbook and topics are very interesting! A LOT of reading. Midterms are hard. Specific questions asked about what DeLamater said in lecture.(A LOT of info!) DeLamater knows his stuff. Extra Credit is given by attending optional movies that relate to the class! You will learn a lot about the best topic ever! ;)
Terrible class. Exams are very difficult and involve memorization of specific details and names rather than understand major themes. He claims this class is useful yet he emphasizes tiny details on exams. Class should be fun and interesting, instead it is difficult and very boring. DO NOT TAKE!
This class was a HUGE dissappointment. I got my first C ever in this class...and I thought it was going to be fairly easy. Unless you spend your time reading the tiniest (unimportant) details in the textbook and from what he says in lecture, you are not going do well on exams. Delamater presents good material in the most boring way possible.
Completely regret taking the course. I thought it would be an interesting course, however the exams made it torture. He tests you on tiny details and even statistics. He tells you on his syllabus that there is over 1,000 pages of reading. Not fun, and you're expected to know all the details of all the reading. This class is not worth the trouble.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! Wait until spring semester and take it when his wife teaches it. The midterms were very difficult and consisted of tiny, pointless details from lecture, the book, and about 45 articles (20 pages each) that are unrelated to the material. DO NOT MISS LECTURE, and know every figure he explains. A very disappointing class.
Fascinating topic and he really knows what he is talking about. The tests aren't that difficult as they are all curved, as long as you do the assigned readings from the textbook (the PowerWebs are ridiculous but no one reads them anyway and the curve takes care of getting all those q's wrong)
honestly he was an okay professor. As long as your read that textbook you will be fine. I hardly ever went to class and I got a solid B. He says there are a lot of questions from exams but there are not that many on them
he knows his topic really, really well and does a good job of keeping things moving and making them clear. read the textbook, go to lecture, know the basic point of the powerwebs, and you'll be fine. it's a lot of memorization and you have to work for a good grade, but it's worth it.
Gets off-track a lot.
LOVE this class! So interesting and helpful in life, not just school. Must go to every lecture and do all powerwebs to get good grade since most test questions from them. Take very detailed notes on what he SAYS, not just power point. I enjoy going to this class each time :)
I chose this class as my fun relaxed class that really interested me but quickly found out i had to memorize insignificant details from textbook, lecture, and dry online articles. Ruined my GPA.
Professor Delamater is great! He knows exactly what he's talking about and very approachable. The only real downside to the class is that it's at 8:50.. but it's still very much so worth it! It's commonly filled with freshman so much of complaining is from those who had their mommy holding their hand through high school. It's college! Read!
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE CLASS. Do not take this class unless you are ready to read your life away. The prof. doesn't even put the material on the exams when he's says to study that certain topic. It will ruin your GPA, it did for me.
I got an A with 78% in the class. If that's not an amazing curve I don't know what is.
Very particular, and expects a lot from his students. Is not an easy class you have to dedicate a lot of time to study and read the textbook. Midterms focus on both lecture and picky details from the text. Make sure to attend lecture. Although does offer extra credit!
This class is pretty challenging. The exams have questions (a lot of tiny details) from lecture, textbook, and powerweb readings. TA's do most of the grading. Your grade is made up by 2 Mid terms and 1 final, and 2 smaller papers. Section is pointless but you get points for going.
Tests were super hard. They covered a lot of info and the questions were really in depth. He goes over info really quickly in lecture so you have to pay attention an take really good notes. Know pretty much all the info from the book, lecture, and articles because it's all on the test.
The tests were very nit-picky but there is a huge curve in this class. The PowerWebs are really boring but important because there are at least 10 questions on each test on them. Delamater makes things quite interesting but overall the class requires tons of work.
hard! small small details on the tests. 2 papers which are easy and the powerwebs suck! 51 articles averaging 15 pages each and read the whole 500 page book. for the final, go look at your old tests! cumulative section is word for word old questions so it really helps. i don't recommend the class
Baaad lecturer. He rambles all over the place, directly contradicts himself or the textbook (that he wrote!), and generally I would not recommend taking this course to anyone for those reasons. ALso, 2/4 TA's were patronizing and unhelpful. He reuses exam qs so if you do end up in this terrible course, go look over your exams and memorize them!
Needlessly difficult course. Completely unclear on expectations of what you need to know of material. Average score on exam was ~50%-even if you learned nothing, it's curved! Waste lots of time learning stuff that is unimportant. Regular typos on exams made for free points. Waste disc time doing childish activities even after whole section complain
Tough class. Tons of reading from the book and online. Test questions are taken from the book, readings, and lecture. Exams are very specific, but there is a huge curve.
absurd amount of reading. pretty unrealistic for 4 credits. test seem very nit-picky. interesting info covered, but tests are so specific that it's next to impossible to study.
One of the best professors I had at my 4 years at UW. So passionate about his work, and passionate about TEACHING. So glad I took his class.
Tests are really really hard. Power web readings are extremely important. He gives a ridiculous amount of reading for an intro class of 4 credits. If you can take it with his wife in the spring. I've heard that that is generally more manageable.
His lectures are very interesting and easy to understand/follow. There is a lot of reading but if you read take notes exams are extremely easy. Powerweb reading are boring but not very important on exams. TAs do all the work and make exams and such very easy.
Fascinating class. He loves what he teaches and he gets really into it. NOT A HARD CLASS. Read what is assigned, go to lecture, go to discussion, study maybe a smidge and you can get an easy A. Great grade booster.
seriously, go chat with him if you're confused about something. he is very kind, understanding, and helpful
Professor DeLamater is very clear and his lectures are very interesting. He answers questions clearly and makes the class more fun with competitions to win "Sexpert" shirts and music in the beginning of some lectures. There's also opportunity to gain extra credit. Read the book!
Though the subject was super interesting, the class was made much harder than it needed to be. For a 100 level course, there was a lot of reading and extra online articles. The midterms were overly specific, and two papers were assigned that really didn't apply to current course material. John is also pretty arrogant since he wrote the textbook.
DeLamater is a brilliant, enthusiastic, intelligent, and funny guy. Very eager to talk to students and hear their views. Lectures can get long winded at times, such as when he is explaining studies and tables at length. Be prepared to read a lot, as there is usually 1-2 textbook chapters assigned per week, and powerweb readings. Exams are easy.
This is a very interesting class! Lectures are interesting and go at a decent pace. You definitely have to read the book to do well on exams, and it is a lot of reading each week. If you read and go to the lectures, you'll do fine. I definitely recommend this class!
Do not take this class! Tests went over too many small details and the short answer portions of the test were graded way too harshly. Little help from TAs. Professor DeLamater tends to go off topic in lecture a lot. This course was a gpa killer.
him and TA's are hardest graders on earth, worst thing ever
Lectures were clear. He engages the class which makes it fun. You will be reading quite a bit! My TA was amazing (Katie) Papers graded reasonably and discussion was fun, although waking up early sucked. Favorite Part: For exams, you answer 3 essay questions of the 10 that he gives you a week in advance. No tricks, just prepare adequately.
I really enjoyed this class! Professor DeLamater is very passionate about his work and he actually wrote the textbook. I found the lectures along with the readings (which were quite long) interesting which made them much more bearable. It is cross listed with psych, so taking before that definitely helped me. The class also has a huge curve
Very interesting course but also a lot of work. You get out what you put into it.
Take psych 160. do it.
This class was incredible, and if you do the work, you'll get an A. Go to ALL of the lectures, do the textbook and article readings, and there's no way you won't pass. The discussions were fun, the material was interesting (it's about sex, how could it not be?), and DeLamater taught amazing lectures. PLEASE take this class you won't regret it
I would not take this class. Overall it was worth it because the material was very interesting, but there are easier classes out there that will fill this requirement for you.
Very tough grading. Went to every class and every lecture, still was graded incorrectly for textbook definitions. Much more work than expected for a 100 level sociology course. Could have taken easier classes
This class was absolutely horrible. My TA was terrible. Very rude and did not look out for her students. The tests are difficult, so read, read, read. Read all the power webs and the textbook, twice. Maybe three times. It was very time consuming for a 100 level course. Would not recommend. It is interesting and you do learn a lot, but GPA KILLER
Each TA was only able to give 9 A's across their sections which meant about one person from each discussion group of about 20 got an A. Opportunity for extra credit but doesn't make a difference if you do it but can hurt you if you don't. Too much material to review for exams, LOTS of reading. Wouldn't recommend if looking for an easy load class.
Knows what he's talking about, but can come off as intimidating and arrogant especially since he wrote the text book. Interesting material and topics. After reading reviews I thought there would be a nice generous curve but it was the opposite. Even my TA said she begged to give more points. Lucky to have had a good TA unlike the other sections.
Not very helpful. Tough tests. Boring lectures.
Great guy, interesting lectures! Papers aren't graded too harshly, and there are 4 of them (easy points, so do well on them!). Gives you ALL the possible essay exam questions week ahead of time. Neg comments are probably from ppl who did not read or put in effort. Getting an A is reasonable. I would GLADLY take another class with him!!!!
This course has an extremely heavy reading load. At least 1-2 chapters from the book per week and about 2 LONG articles per week. If you don't read this material, you won't pass. Attend ALL lectures because 13 of each test is based off of information he teaches only in lecture. You definitely have to work for your grade, but an A is possible.
This professor wrote the textbook that is used for the class so he is knowledgeable & his lectures are great! However, the TAs for this class are what ruined it. They are unprepared, rude, and lack skills on how to facilitate productive discussion. I was very disappointed because this is a class I was expecting a lot more than I got. Complete waste
The TA's are ridiculously difficult graders and create the exams which are super hard. I took this class thinking it would be interesting and a relatively easy class, but it is NOT. There is TONS of reading, all of which is on the exam, and Professor wrote the text so he takes it all REALLY seriously. They include the smallest details on the exams.
I took him for Human Sexuality so when I saw that he was older, I was scared. Turns out he makes this class fun and not at all awkward. He is SO knowledgable he wrote the book you use. He plays funny sex-related music before class to get you in the mood to learn about what could possibly be the most important topic there is.
Super transphobic and misogynistic. I found him very unapproachable and very unwilling to discuss matters with students. Would not recommend.
I enjoyed the class and the professor. He gives the test essays a week in advanced and be sure to use them! Also ask the TA what they expect if you want a good grade. The lectures are clear and he will answer questions. Be sure to pay close attention because he goes through all the material well but without a powerpoint. I would recommend him.
This class was way more difficult than I expected. If you put the work in (and I mean 10+ hours a week NOT including discussion and lecture) then an A is definitely possible. The TA's are impossible to satisfy, so it's nearly impossible to do well on short answers and essays, though. DeLamater enjoys lecturing and the topics are interesting.
Professor DeLamater really knows his stuff. The lectures are interesting, and the knowledge you gain really applies to real life scenarios. However, the TAs are harsh graders and the exams are difficult. The TA you are assigned can really make or break your grade. Worth the work, though, as the class is enjoyable. Great lectures, lots of work!
Don't take this class if you are looking for an easy A. The topic is very interesting (literally all about sex), but you are assigned 100-150 pages of reading a week. The tests and papers are graded very hard. Just go get to know your TAs because they can be harsh if they don't know you. Overall, if you put the effort in an A is possible.
This class is interesting and I even looked forward to discussion. This class is graded very toughly. I did all of the reading and was really interested in it. I was disappointed by my grade because there wasn't much more I could have done. Many people in my discussion got D's and F's on the papers which I thought was unfair.
First, he wrote the textbook for the class, so he knows what he's talking about. Never had issues answering any questions students asked in class. Extremely knowledgeable on the topic and presents it in a way that's very relevant to the real world. I had a great TA so that also helped. Would definitely recommend this class - the honors section too.
Class was very interesting as material had many real life connections. Have to do well on tests and papers since they are basically your whole grade. There are 3 total tests and two papers. You end up reading the whole textbook and a lot of book information isn' covered in lecture so you have to read.
This class is very interesting, but you have to be dedicated to get a good grade. There are questions from every lecture on each test, so skipping can really hurt your grade. There are lots of assigned readings-a chapter every two nights, as well as several articles each week- that are also on tests. However, you learn lots of valuable material
Delamater is clearly passionate about what he's teaching which made the lectures more interesting. The midterm and final are entirely vocab/essay based (long but given to you ahead of time - a good grade requires preparation). Discussion attendance/participation is worth a ton (you have to participate every week), but a good TA made sections fun.
If you're interested in learning about sex, take this class! Be prepared to do a ton of studying. Take good lecture and book notes, and skim the online articles. The TAs are pretty harsh graders on the papers and the short answer portion of exams, but everything is graded on a curve. DeLamater is funny and I learned a lot of valuable information!
Delamater is dry. The class itself is very interesting, however you really need to keep on top of your text book and article readings. The tests have questions from lecture, discussion, and the readings. I personally think the way the papers are graded could be improved. I feel that my grade poorly represents how much I learned. READ READ READ.
Delamater is a gem. Soc/psych 160 is a great class, in content and because of Delamater. He's hilarious and makes class 100% worth going to every day. It's a ton of reading, especially for a 100-level class, but it's not terrible. Just make sure to read the text and attend lectures and discussions. You'll learn a lot!
This class is an easy A if you're good at short answer exams (rather than multiple choice)! There's one group project assignment which is arguably pretty fun. Would definitely recommend this class for psych/non-psych majors alike.
