nice prof, insists you call him john, overall an interesting class
No Comments
When it comes to Anthropology, John (he insists that you call him by his first name)is great. Makes the class more interesting and fun to learn. Woudl highly recommend to any student taking Anthro 1
best seriously study in this class, both book and notes. won't get by just showing up. good story telling to explain meanings. doesn't take questions during lecture, BUT will take time till you get it before or after class. hard, but worth it.
Very good teacher. One of the best story tellers. His exams are fair but not for the casual student. If you are here just for credits, leave. You will run into problems. He is one of the best profs I've had at SMC to date.
I love this man. He is by far the greatest teacher I had. Great lectures, extremely interesting stories to help relate and remember the material, and he works you HARD for the grade. I would recommend him to anyone willing to push themselves.
He is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had. His class is hard and he really makes you earn your grade, but when its over you know so much. He is so funny and really relates to his students. Take this class with him!!!
best teacher I have taken at smc. The class can be hard, but worth it for his fabulous stories that relate well to anthropology. grades on a curve.
He'll make you laugh and if you don't study, he'll make you cry. Nonetheless, if you want to experience a brillant teacher, take his class.
good teacher. doesn't like slackers. class can be hard if you don't try. grades on a curve. doesn't give a study guide. only study guide is your notes and book. tests you on book just to make sure you are reading the book. overall good teacher.
This guy is what its all about...demanding, absolutely riveting, relevant and current stories. Be prepared to study as you would any science class...in detail. Worth every second and he takes time outside class....
great teacher, a really cool guy with interesting stories and clear and concise lectures. He will make you learn Anthro, so don't think you're going to pass his tests just like that... He really is one of the best teachers at SMC...
John's the man, he has a storyteller rep and it's true he tells em good. REAL good. Hahaha. He's got the goods though, helluva teacher, makes peeps actually WANT to go to class sometimes. That's always a plus.
John is an excellent teacher, fantastic story teller, and a wonderful mind. He is a very positive professor with a galaxy of knowledge; you won't want to miss a class.
John is the best professor I've had at SMC. IF you are willing to study you will really learn. Good stories, good listener, good material. Quality professor!!! Has a political opinion does not force it on you. THE BEST! Not a cakewalk though.
This guy is awesome. not only is he down-to-earth, he's intelligent. I thought that Anthropology was gonna be really boring but he made it fun :] good teachers are determined by how much they love teaching. he proves that by far ^-^
By far the best prof I've ever had. Took Anthro 1 in '97 fr him & he stuck in my memory for so long I hunted him down to take Anthro2. Don't fall asleep - EVER - take notes, study hard. He's hard but worth it. Funny and intelligent. Truly the best.
Great teacher, great story teller and great person. I love his class..just be prepared to study! Tests can be hard if you dont know your stuff. Not a class to take for an "easy" A, but if you really want to learn then I recommen taking John's class.
Denman's one of the greatest professors out there. His stories and concepts are always thought upon with detail and clarity. Classes are always rather fun, and time goes by quickly! Make sure you study the notes, read the textbook a bit, and the ethnology. Getting an A is really up to you, so work!
Horrible! All these other ratings must be by one not-so-intelligent student. If Denman valued his field, he would spend more time lecturing about it and less time on silly stories about married life. His class is like a boring sitcom. Maybe Denman's ratemyprofessor fan's favorite TV show is Joey
If Fonzi were to become an anthropologist.... Denman tries to be cool and funny and charasmatic, but he's not interesting unless you love frivolous stories. Professors shouldn't be cool; they should be smart and inspired by their fields.
Overall a great, helpful teacher; easily the most interesting class I've taken in college. However, he tends to take too much time telling stories (which are interesting, by the way), so you absolutely must read the required texts. Not an easy A, but great. I can't wait to take his Anthro 1 class!
"fonzi"? you moron. john is an absolutely wonderful teacher, and is one of those amazing people who seem like they were born to teach. amazing stories, yes, but also a very strong backing of theory and (especially) ethnography. he is the no. 1 reason i am studying anthropology at a university.
I'll never forget this teacher! He MAKES you wanna be a better student and I'm not kidding. You don't dare to take his tests unprepared. He's fair, he'll tell you what to expect (expect some Latin) and will ask those things! If you don't get a good grade you can blame only yourself. TAKE HIM!
Definitely a good story teller albeit subjective! Has an underlying anger issue. Don't nod off or you will be humiliated. I don't like when professors make a spectacle of students. I feel this professor could use some humility himself. I think serious students might prefer Barker.
These bad ratings here are bogus, Denman is amazing, but you do have to do your part in studying and writing good notes, then you are set to get an A, he really tries to make his lectures a lot more interesting than any other teacher i had here at SMC, I recommend to take him for anthro 1,2!
Denman makes his lectures very amusing, and also it relates to real life. His teaching makes you want to come to class, unlike other classes where you have to drag yourself, I recommend him very highly!
Coolest teacher ever!! I switched majors after taking him.
This guy deserves to get the boot!! Horrible teacher that doesn't give students the time of day. STAY AWAY
He is a very fun professor. His lectures and stories are great and you actually want to come back for more. Must read 2 books and text. Not hard if you try.
Anyone who thinks Denman is a poor professor must be thoroughly knowledgable in the physical properties of glue. If you are at all contemplating anthro. Denman will finalize your decision - he's that good. Be prepared w/ notes & various parts of text for test; Anthro Applied, Famous Anthropologists, Original Studies, etc. This man changed my life!
Denman's the bomb
AMAZING TEACHER!! Thanks to him, I'm majoring in Anthro now. Honestly one of the best classes you will ever take in your life. Be prepared 4 exams - study notes thoroughly, and in text; def's, anthro applied, famous anthrop's, and original studies ONLY.
AMAZING TEACHER!! Thanks to him, I'm majoring in Anthro now. Honestly one of the best classes you will ever take in your life. Be prepared for exams - study notes thoroughly, and in text; def's, anthro applied, famous anthrop's, and original studies ONLY.
Good teacher, but a little weird
I wish he'd teach all of my classes.
Most of the past ratings are good b/c the people rating him are PASSIONATE about Anthro. For those of you who just want to fulfill a GE, don't take him. I got an A in this class but I worked my butt off ... it was harder than UCLA classes. I took this thinking it would be cake and it was a nightmare. Nice guy, but the class was WAY too much work.
John is the best prof I've had! His classes are so interesting that you look forward to going to class! He's also very helpful and very friendly. The tests are a bit hard, but its curved and he does offer e.c. I definetely recommend taking his class. Just make sure you stay on top of the reading.
this teacher changed my life.he is funny, yet grounded and will alter your perspective permanently.the best person i have EVER met.
I took him quite some time ago and he is good, but his class is not easy. He is very approachable, and his lectures never bore, but I wouldn't rave about him. Good class overall, not an easy A.
This is not an easy "A", but John Denman really cares about teaching. He has passion for his subject and profession. Take excellent notes and read everything. Tests are multiple choice, but can be tricky. You must be prepared! I love his stories, but wish he would tell just a few less, and give more time in class for questions.
John is THE man!Amazing teacher who's passionate and down-to-earth.Dont think you can whiz by on your general smarts ans weak study skills like you can in some other classes.Do any reading asked of you bc he has THE hardest mult choice tests ever.Amazing and hilarious storyteller and great person overall. To not take this class would be to miss out.
Great teacher. Easy class. You have to read 2 ethnographies, which are easy to read. Tests are primarily def., anthro applied, researchers, and original studies. He also includes class lecture. It was easy for me and I didnt even read the entire text. Just go to class, take notes, pay attention to what is on tests to prepare for the next ones.
This teacher changed my life - I took his night class and switched from a Psych Major to Anthro Major, quit my full-time job so I could take his Anthro 1 class next semester! Not an easy A but the BEST teacher I've ever had - if you want a teacher who is passionate about his field John is THE MAN!
I changed my major because of this class. He makes everything so interesting. I always wanted to go to class. You do have to study for the tests, but they're not hard if you're prepared. He's straight forward and doesn't try to trick you. Take good lecture notes and STUDY them.
He's a funny guy with lots of interesting stories. He is really passionate about Anthro, and he will get you into it, too. However, he puts a lot of tricky questions on the tests, because he wants to challenge you and make you think hard about the material. Study the lecture notes, and the chapters--terms, original studies, famous anthrops, etc.
A complete waste of time. He rambles on pointlessly for hours and then tests you on the most banal nonsense. His class has a serious curve so the grade isn't a problem but it is so boring that you will develop migraines from hitting your head and clock watching.
THE TRUTH: The best teacher I have ever had. This man is SO passionate. His lectures are just stories from his life.He talks the entire class, and I would laugh out loud everytime and usually be teary eyed by the end, then go home and HAVE to tell someone what I had learned. I did not believe in evolution before this man.BUT not so easy to get an A
Denman is the real deal. He's passionate, approachable & throughly knowledgeable in his field, not to mention the funniest guy on campus hands down. He sets a strong foundation to prepare you for UC-level work, which I'm grateful for because that's where I am now thanks to him. Study hard for the tests; you'll actually want to. Best professor ever!
John is really intense, very sensitive and well rounded philosophically. Good stuff !
John is the best prof at SMC! He is really funny and makes the class interesting with his stories. I would def take another one of his classes. He is very helpful when needed but this is not an easy A. You need to work but he makes you want to study.
Tests are a little tricky; he does some astonishing things with multiple choice questions. He grades on a curve, which is actually quite accurate. His lectures are outstanding, our class even clapped a few times during the semester. I took him during the winter - the class proved to be very accelerated, definitely not for slackers, but well worth i
Lets see, he is a great teacher all around. Funny, nice, and very passionate for his field of studies. He is so far the best teacher when it comes to learning and the worst teacher when it comes to getting an A. I studied my ass off and still ended up a C. If you want a good prep course for going to a UC then take his class.
I took his class at LBCC and loved it. He was passionate about what he taught and made things very clear. He told us that we were gonna have to work hard in his class and unlike some professors he meant it. He was tough but was willing to help with everything. And it didn't hurt that he was a silver fox.
Best class I ever took at SMC. Enlightening. He's extremely passionate, engaging, inspiring and funny. Wall-to-wall lecture each session. Every day, I left with my head swimming as if I just watched a mind-blowing movie. Super tricky tests, but graded on strong curve: take good notes AND read the text AND study both and you'll get an A.
Run..don't walk to take one of John's classes. He changed my life and I'm not being dramatic! Not an easy A - I had to study my butt off for mine. Great prep for UCLA - where I am applying for Anthro because of this teacher!
In my 4 years of college I still haven't had a prof that has superceded John in greatness. His ability to challenge & push students almost goes unnoticed because you're having SO MUCH FUN sitting there participating in his brilliant lectures. Pure inspiration, dedication and passion... not to mention the funniest storyteller ever. Legend status!
pain in the a$$ exams but the most entertaining class! john is really great and SO friggin funny.
lets just say its NOT AN EASY A. the class goes by so slowly, except for his entertaining stories and his attempts to be funny. there is so much reading and you have to do all of it. the tests are hard and tricky, but you are competing with your class because he grades on a curve and gives the top 20% an A.
This guy explains really well and has really funny stories. His tests are not hard. If you can memorize the textbook and his notes, youll get an A. His questions are not even tricky if you read the notes and the textbook carefully. Pay attention to the wording on the tests because many students complain the tests are tricky but theyre not
he made the class fun and interesting with his lectures and personal stories and he's a real sweet guy... but the tests are sooo HARD; all multiple choice but he makes it tricky. you have to do all the readings and study hard. not an easy A.
one of the few best professors out there period. great teacher, explains the material in his own words for the students to understand and has funny stories to tell along the way so class won't be plain. Actually made me think twice about my major bout since it was a summer class didn't give him enough time to do so. Great professor!!
Excellent teacher! Not the most interesting class but he manages to make the material very entertaining with personal stories. Really cares about students and teaching well.
He did make me chuckle, but his jokes started to get annoying and tiring to hear. I had to run away after four class meetings.
John is PASSIONATE but challenging tchr. Not an easy A.Lots of stdyng, notetkng & trcky tests. But it's not that difficult to achieve that A if you work. He is really funny, made the class laugha lot & his lectures are far from boring.1 thing: he kept making comments about how the 2-3 people were better b/c they got A's-Grow Up.I got an A but I did it with a 40 hour wk weekAND an over 40 hour School work week. Those comments are patronizing and judgemental for the rest of the class-not a great attribute for a "teacher."
The subject is just difficult but it's not too hard once you understand how he works. Take the class during a short semester. Take notes on what he discusses and that will be part of your test. Don't read each page of the book it's worthless just read on what he discusses in class. Funny and tells stories that will keep you awake for a while.
Fantastic and engaging professor! He really kept the class laughing. His tests are tricky though, and he is very strict with attendance. He's sweet and helpful though, if you go to him with questions. You need to study hard for his tests, but other than those 3 there's no homework or quizzes.
"chone" is one of my favorite Professors. John is an exciting, energetic, and challenging professor who will give you an enormous amount of information that sticks! No one ever wanted class to end, in fact most of the time we kept him late (and john was always happy to be there for us) Tests are challenging so make sure you study hard.
worked my butt off and finally got an b...kind of disappointed, but i never regreted to take his class, he made me start to like anthro and he is really an amazing professor, maybe got an b just because i took it in winter and there are 2 books to read! the books are kinda hard for international student...i think if u are good at eng, juz take him
I really wanted to like him and all because his stories are good but he doesnt spend enough time on the material in the book that is covered on the tests.he just tells these long drawn out stories to illustrate simple points.i dropped after 5weeks because i didnt feel motivated to do the work for the class.wish he would have gone over more in class
Denman is an awesome professor! He is extremely passionate, and I'm always eager to attend his class. At times I felt like I was going to a free comedy show. His tests ARE hard, but he's only trying to prepare us for a 4-year, text must be read to get a good grade on the test, but his lectures are entertaining.
John is incredably passionate about the subject. He tells you exactly what you need to do to get a good grade. He gets disappointed when students don't do well or miss class. Gives some xtra credit but must be in class to get the assignment.
It has been 3 years since my last class with him, and 11 since the one before that and I still remember John Denman. In a lot of ways, he changed the course of my life & he's just some teacher I randomly took. He's simply amazing & inspiring & smart & funny & a great teacher. Can you tell I'm a little in love with him? Not easy, but worth the work!
Prof. Denman is an enthralling story teller. He will regal you with true travel stories about his journeys to Fiji and abroad. READ and THOROUGHLY memorize your chapters BEFORE an exam. Tests are Multi.choice. He incorporates VERY difficult questions and answers. Some I thought were ambiguous, but just be sure to know every nit-picking info.
Really nice guy with great engaging stories. However, I was always blown away by how difficult the exams were. The textbook is a must read, and attendance is only mandatory to gain points that will improve your grade. I did poorly on all exams but he had mercy on me and bumped my grade up
he seems like an easy going person. he says "Hi" to students all the time. he's lecture is interesting. he sounds good so far, right? but when the test comes, he is as harsh as hell. his test is as hard as hell....
John is an amazing professor!! His stories are hilarious and wonderful. the tests are extremely hard and you have to really read the material before each exam. 2 multiple choice midterms and final. I loved his humor, intelligence and wit, but the class is very very tough!!
LAMEST "cool" professor ever. will waste 1/2 the lecture with his cute stories, then crucify you on his tests because you didn't teach yourself all the material he DIDN'T cover in class. i never worked so hard for a "B" in my life! if you care about your GPA, don't mess with this passive aggressive clown.
He is very personable and nice. He spends a lot of the lectures telling stories which are always interesting. Reading the book is in your hands and required for all exams. You also have to read additional texts on top of that. If you are interested in Antropolgy I reccomend taking this course, but if you need it for transfer good luck.
It's true that his exams are difficult. But the only way you can absolutely fail in this class is if you NEVER take notes, NEVER read the text, and NEVER go to class. If you show up, listen to his funny stories, study the recommended amount for a 3 unit course, then you'll pass with at least an A.
Hes passionate about anthro but terrible at preparing u 4 the tests. He spends 90% of class telling drawn out stories & says ok every 5 words. I tallied it once..485 oks in 2 hrs.Really annoying.Maybe his stories about fiji r interesting but the 1s about his son and harry potter not so much.he doesnt the cover material but ur still responsible 4 it
I have to agree his tests are not easy at all but no one and i repeat no one should be unable to pass this class. just review vocab in bold and def. Also, it helps to talk to him about what it is ur tryn to accoplish. If you tell him what grade you want and he sees you work hard there is no doubt that when its all over u'l get the grade you desire
Tests are quite tricky and you need to study every single night to be able to pass. If you're the type who studies the night before-DO NOT TAKE HIM! book doesn't really help except for terms. his notes are clear. 3 midterms, 1 final. get 110/150 on all tests, A in class. memorize and you'll be fine! (you also have to read two books - will be tested
He is the measure of a dedicated honorable, enthusiastic (joy of life) educator who lifts up those who need help. Thank you Professor for knowledge of "The Forest People" whose witness illuminates the truth that goodness is the natural state of man and nature and still perpetuated by those who protect free will from the corruption of power.
John's class was simply one of my favorites. It isn't easy, but a good class shouldn't be. He puts a lot of information out there in lectures and it is up to the student to think about it, compare/contrast it with the text and ethnographies, and apply it all on the tests. A very satisfying class to do well in!
John's class was awesome though it does require some work. Its definitely not unreasonable. If you read the books and pay close attention to the anthropologists of note, biocultural connection etc in the text book you'll do well on the midterm/final. He's very nice and caring and will help you succeed
John is a professor that changes lives on a daily basis. Prior to his class, I didn't even know what Anthropology was. But through amazing lectures, always being there to help his students, and being able to introduce a unique way of looking at life that only an anthropologist can teach , it has become my major, and a driving passion of mine.
Extraordinary teacher and wonderful friend. Take this class. He gives some extra credit assignments. His tests are very very hard and graded on a curve. Do not miss the opportunity to take John's class. This man is crazy smart. Always available to chat after class or correspond through email. One of the best SMC has!!
great teacher. stories are funny and interesting. tests are extremly hard. took him over the summer. dont recommend it!! 3 books in 6 wks HARSH!! studied my butt off and passed with a C
This professor is such a positive person, his tests are very hard especially the first when you don't know what to expect than it gets much easier all you need is study, take very good notes because mostly tests consist of class discussions. John Denman is the nicest person, winter session with him was great.
John is the best professor i have ever had!! he is super cool and considerate, and very interesting. his tests were the most difficult i've seen, but if you study everything you should be fine. has a huge curve that saved alot of people. i got an A but i did work my butt off. it was worth it!
Simply, a life changing teacher and class! He inspirers students to realize the facination and importance of Anthro. so much, that many in each class change their majors! First test is a killer but after you learn to study they become easier and a fun challange. He is always available to help or mentor. No teacher or class could be better!
Chone is an amazing professor who absolutely loves Anthropology! However, the class is almost entirely self-directed, because the lectures and the reading are usually only tangentially related. If you take him, you'll either love him or hate him for his stories. I recommend him for anyone who is taking Anthro because they like the subject.
Prefessor Denman is the BEST!! I was almost thinking about changing my career two weeks into his leture, almost! His lecture is fun and interesting and most of all he connects all the dots. If you pay attention to his lecture, do what he says and read what he tells you. You'll be easily get an "A". GREAT FUN CLASS!!
Very cool teacher but prone to get side tracked. Interesting lectures but he was never on schedule and so didn't cover some chapters from the book in class. TEST EXTREMELY HARD!! He tests mostly on minutiea from the book. Only thing that can save you is the huge curve adn points for attendance.
Best advice to get an A: get into his latest class which should be at 2:15. He's tired frm teaching his other two classes and ends up telling you not to worry about chapter so and so. If you get into a class w/ lazy ppl you'll benefit more from the curve. You can get a higher grade with lower scores if you're in the right class. You'll love him
Well, my mistake, he doesn't tell you not to worry about a whole chapter, he just says what to look for in the meat of the text. My advice: make flshcards for defintions, read small boxes once and the big boxes twice. pay VERY close attention to anthroplogogists of note- the trickiest on the tests. Ethnographies'll get you the A. Do EZ Extra Cred
Denman is fantastic. He tells lots of stories, and some people, for some reason, don't like it, even though the stories are totally relevant and entertaining. You MUST study from the book, and you MUST read the ethnographies all the way through, not skim them. Denman's always explicit about what to study. He's the best teacher I've ever had at SMC.
John is an amazing person. He will literally change your outlook on everything in the world. yes, the tests are hard! but that is because he gives the same test as his ucla students, but he CURVES IT! trust me, I got 40 questions right out of 150 for the final and got a B. its all about his amazing stories! take him and stop worrying!!
quite possibly the best professor i have ever had. The class was extremely enjoyable, the professor made even the most mundane topics completly interesting, which made it that much easier to put in the time and effort required to get a decent grade. Tests are over the top tough, but curved. Im a better person for taking his class.
very interesting teacher.
John is the greatest professor I've ever had or ever will. His stories are amazing and I'll probably remember them for the rest of my life, but most importantly his lectures are insanely awesome; not to mention most of what he says is his midterms. If I ever find a fossil, I'm definitely letting him join me on the analysis.
Awesome teacher and amazing individual. Extremely intelligent and passionate. One of the best classes that I've ever taken. Follow what he says on the syllabus and you'll do well. Read everything, make flash cards, and attend all classes.
He is very interesting and engages his class. He does not go over all material and his tests are next to impossible. If you are bad at multiple choice, do not take his class.
A very awesome professor whose classes everyone should take. The key to getting a good grade is to show up every meeting and to not write everything he says because many stories do not show up on brutally painful exams. Make sure you know the concepts like the back of your hand; the curve is your best friend.
Denman is a good teacher and his class is very entertaining. However, he does not follow syllbus closely and he is often off topic during his lecture, and you need read all books on your own because he does not go over the two required book reading. His exam is very tricky and hard and he does bell curve, so only the top 20% will get A.
Tests are super hard!!!!!!!
this class was compelling! i LOVED attending john's classes and listening to his lectures/personal stories. he is HILARIOUS. :) yes, his tests are super hard...but he grades on a curve! if you can get your scores in the 3digits (100+/150) you'll get the A. i really recommend taking his class! john, you are AMAZING!! :)
Omg, John Denman is one of the most amazing professors at SMC. Yeah, his tests are very challenging and difficult, but he"s a very fair teacher and takes time out of his schedule to see students individually. He's also VERY VERY FUNNY!! If you're thinking about an Anthro course, definitely take his!! HIGHLY RECCOMEND!!
excellent teacher! hard class, but in the right way. gives great lessons, is funny, and extremely helpful. we need more people like him as our leaders. go to class and study what he teaches and suggests and you will get an A. put in the work, though. i lived for his stories. one of the best professors i've ever had. period.
Uncle John is amazing! Took both his Physical & Cultural Anthro class & passed both. His lectures are thee best & he definitely makes class fun. I highly recommend. He does use the book so make sure to buy it & his 1st test is always the hardest.. After that they tend to get easier since you know what he's looking for.
DENMAN IS THE EPITOME OF PHENOMENAL PROFESSOR OUT THEIR. He will just opened up your mind to a new level. His class is hard to miss, because u become addicted to the awesomeness of his lectures. I burned 4563486 calories laughing and enjoying every minute of it. Read your life out, Study HARD. STudy in groups! test are mindblowing
Professor John is a first-class UCLA caliber instructor. The time in his class during lectures fly by because of his well-organized, concise, and clear style of captivating his audience. You must take good notes, review them, and read the two novels assigned in the semester in order to walk away with an A
This class was awesome. Your grade is based on attendance plus 3 tests. Attendance is easy since classes are so interesting but the tests are impossibly hard. They are graded on a curve so just read the book and pay attention and you will almost deffinitley do better than the rest of the class and get a good grade.
John Denman is an amazing professor (and even thats an understatement) Very down to earth guy who can truly relate to his students. His stories are unforgettable and its like watching stand up and learning important facts at the same time. His tests can be a bit difficult but if you pay attention, study, and take precise notes you're good to go.
READ!!! Do not fall behind. Little time is given to read the text and the novels. He tells a lot of stories and experiences so that leaves little time to focus reviewing on the chapters in the book. The novels can be difficult to read because they drag on. 3 tests are given. The curve is a tremendous help. Good luck
Know strange facts and statistics in the text surrounding vocab words and every contribution/extraordinary life experience of Anthropologists of Note for the final. Detailed answer choices(one word makes a difference), but take the class if you care about the world and want to learn more about it. "You're remiss in your education if you don't."
Great professor reading mandatory along with attendance because lectures and readings are on exams. Clear on what you should known. Does try to make the class fun. The background stories he tells about how the discoveries on early human fossils did help me memorized them.
John is a great teacher to take, honestly, I didn't really like Antro overall. He's an awesome teacher, person, and strict, but if you do what he says you should be fine. His tests are hard ONLY if you did not do the reading. Otherwise, it's passible. Great class!
Go to class, take notes on everything, and read the book/ethnographies!! He makes class so fun and interesting though so it is not a chore AT ALL to go. You learn a lot about the material as well as a lot of random interesting facts about life in general. Very awesome guy!
This is no easy A, but it's totally worth it. Go to class, take good notes, READ and make flash cards of the "boxes" from the textbook. GREAT CLASS, GREAT DISCUSSIONS. I LOVE HIM. BEST TEACHER EVEEEEEEEERRRRR!! <3
Great teacher, hard but he really does try to help kids out who put in the effort. Don't miss class, I did this during summer , and afterwards I just was thinking " when is he teaching anthro 2, i should sign up" . And even though I had to study alot, this class helped to jump start my GPA climb.
Hands down my favorite professor ever. He made every lecture topic relevant and understandable in terms the whole class could identify with, and I was honestly sad when the term ended.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! His lectures are so interesting and fun you don't even feel you are in class. The exams are not that easy but if you go to class and READ what he asks you'll do great! You'll learn so much from that class. I was so fascinated with the class I even considered doing a minor in Anthropology.
Entertaining and approachable, with a wealth of real world research and field experience. Tough tests though. Text book and lecture heavy. Good, hard class.
AMAZING. Seriously one of the best professors I've ever had; he truly cares about his students, not to mention his stories are HILARIOUS. Keep in mind that reading the textbook & 2 ethnographies is REQUIRED; his tests are deathly hard if you don't read them. it's really that simple; read the books & you won't want to kill yourself during the tests.
John Denman's classes are ultra-informative and exhilarating. They are also NOT for the faint of heart. You WILL have to read and absorb a LOT of information. But it is so worth it. And woe unto those who attempt to text during class when you think he's not looking! You have been warned. But Uncle John is the rare great teacher.
This class while entertaining is not worth the time investment needed to succeed. It's amusing that a professor so highly revered by his students definitely segments his class into grade tiers. He may know what he is talking about, but his lectures' relevance to the exams is minimal at best. Top 20% get an A. So only 8 people. Take someone else.
Class was not only enjoyable, but highly informative. It's not easy, you must read and memorize terms. Do the work, and you can get an A. He is fair. He will prepare you well for schools like UCLA. The info I learned also helped me when I studied in Germany. I was able to make a deeper cultural connection thanks to this class TAKE IT!
he was seriuosly one of the funnest teachers ever and really changed my life! His class was so exciting and I could not wait to get in my seat every day. This class and this man will change you for the better, and if you dont change, well I guess you just need to open your mind! I think he is cute as well :) Mind blowing experienece, worth it!!!!!
He is a wonderful teacher. He loves what he teaches and it shows. He is funny and engaging. I highly recommend any of his classes. He teaches about life and anthro and is very funny and tells lots of stories. He can get a little side tracked but no one minds. He class is very manageable if you pay attention and read.
For the most part, Denman is a cool teacher. His lectures were interesting, but sometimes he was overly animated. The only real problem with Denman is that when people would raise there hand in class, he wouldn't always call on them. If you take his class, remember that attendance is crucial to your grade (as is reading the assigned texts).
He is probably the coolest professor I have ever had. You can't miss class, but his lectures are very interesting. Especially when he has stories. You do have to read a lot, but as long as you don't try to read it all in one day you will be fine. I want to take another anthro class just to take him again, even if I don't need it.
Nice guy BUT likes the sound of his own voice more than being an effective teacher. Class is way to hard for what it is. Lots of reading, useless definitions, UNFAIR trick questions on exams! Don't ever expect to get your questions answered, be prepared to hear all about his wife and kids instead. Warning, nice/funny doesn't equal fair or effective
Seriously one of the best class experiences i've ever had. Pay attention to the random facts he mentions. extremely animated/informative. READ READ READ!! Difficult exams. you will fail miserably if you don't keep up with the reading.
I have never been interested to find out what anthropology was about until this class. Professor Denman engages the students with stories and ethnographies that keep you wanting to learn more. I feel like I've learned more in this class than in any other. Be prepared to read a lot. Memorize the anthropologists noted etc.. I'm going to miss him.
Professor Denman is amazing. He has so much experience and he makes class very interesting. You will definitely not be bored. The class is hard especially if you don't read the chapters. IT'S A MUST TO READ THE BOOKS AND CHAPTERS IN ORDER TO PASS. Other than that, if you pay attention and understand his lectures, you'll do fine in the class.
He is THE funniest and nicest professor I've ever had but with that said his tests are UCLA level. Note down every word he says and read every bit of the chapters he assigns. The class is curved. 2 HARD midterms, 1 HARD final, 1 Zoo project, and attendance counts for points. Don't forget only the top 20% will get an 'A'! Everyone's an opponent!
Denman is the best professor at SMC. The anthro department should build him a statue. Only a gifted professor could make the material so interesting and colorful, while pushing students to try harder. He cares about the material and making each class different and exciting. His exams are the most difficult exams i have ever taken.(curve)
Denman is a great professor. His lectures are interesting, informative, and engaging. Take the class if you are interested. It's too much studying to take just as a schedule filler. Denman is pretty funny, too, like having Robin Williams as your teacher. He's very helpful, approachable, and friendly.
Excellent professor, fair tests, curved grades. Must attend all lectures and take notes, as well as read textbook. It is a lot of information to have to learn, but he makes it fun and interesting.
amazing person, amazing story-teller. many in physical anthro don't know he's actually a cultural anthropologist. much of the subject matter you will have to teach yourself out of the book. tests are VERY HARD, but curved. prepare to be challenged if you're not a science person.
Chone is an amazing person, and may be the best story teller i've encountered. He really knows his stuff and makes it come alive. Attendance is mandatory and graded. You absolutely HAVE to read the textbook or you WILL fail miserably.Exams are hard but fair, and the grades are curved! If you want the best class experience at SMC take Denman!
This Prof is one of the best professors i have ever had. He is funny, exciting, energetic, and informative. His lectures are a treat. Anthro will never be more fun. He is extremely helpful, nice, and down to earth. He is not the easiest teacher. His tests are hard but there is a huge curve and as long as you put a little effort in you will get a C.
Alright, i will tell it straight. He is not the easiest or hardest teacher. Your grade depends on how smart you are in comparison to your class. The class is graded on percentages, 20% get A's 20% get B's and 40% get C's and the rest get D's or F's. Although he does make exceptions, as long as you average a certain percent you will get a C.
Awesome professor. Best story teller ever. Made getting up early a little less dreadful because class is just that interesting.
This teacher is helpful. The information that he provides is woven throughout stories he shares during lectures. It takes him a while to get to the point, but if you're attentive you'll catch the relativity of the examples. He's very friendly and made the subject more fun. The book is required, you'll need it to study. 2 midterms + final, no hw.
Professor Denman is a phenomenal teacher who engages you to his informative lectures. His UCLA exams are a challenge because for every exam you have to read minimum 4 chapters, and it is a hard textbook to extract all that information and concentrate it into your memory vault. I gradually built up to an A, that at first, I couldn't believe it!
The class required much more than is expected. You dont learn what is on the exam during lecture. He just goes on and on with his stories that are not at all helpful. His exams are also VERY HARD! Not a good first experience with anthropology AT ALL!!
This class started off really interesting but the first two test were pushed back by two weeks which gave us a lot less time to learn the material for the final. I ended up having to teach myself the last five chapters and we were never able to see the final curve of the class.
Very interesting stories. The class was never boring and the professor had a great way of making the subject very interesting.
Professor Denman's classes truly are EXTREMELY difficult, his exams beyond hard & tricky. His lectures were rife with useless anecdotes he talks so much about his family that I felt that I knew them more than I knew mine! He talks WAY too much, his stories are a bit mysogynistic & sometimes offensive. He appeals mostly to young men fresh out of HS
Very outgoing professor, and does tend to derail lecture at times with stories of his family or experiences, but still connects it to what he teaches. Not that difficult of a class as long as YOU READ THE TEXTBOOK & ASSIGNED BOOKS, STUDY, and ATTEND CLASS EVERYDAY! He curves the grades too. His lectures are very enlightening and always interesting!
he's a cool guy, a great man to be exact...but his exams were beyond hard everything is based on the book so make sure you read every single page and attend class his lectures will be on the test good luck on chapters 3 and 9 hardest ever!!!
Professor Denman is incredibly warm and personable. As a person, you'll enjoy his company immediately. His test, really are, extremely difficult. He's done his graduate studies in UCLA so his intentions are meant well when he tests you. Keep in mind he likes to test all details in the books, even the distinct tribe name and culture
There are a few key concepts in the lectures once in a while, but they are bloated with his unnecessary anecdotal stories that don't help much. He should emphasize in letting us know what parts of the text book readings are going to be in the exam. Read the text thoroughly especially the definitions and research studies on the side of some pages.
HE IS THE BEST. The best professor in SMC by far. Yes his classes are not easy, but man they are great. One of the smartest guys I've ever met, I'm sad my class is over, I really wanted to continue to learn from him. Take him.
He is by far the most interesting and talkative professor you will ever have; BUT do not mistake his fantastic personality equating to easy exams. He really tries to trick you & you will have to know his lecture AND the readings (textbook) inside out to get one of the curved A's. I got one of the highest B's & every test question matters in the end
The course itself is extremely reading heavy. You NEED to read and study the textbook and related anthologies. His tests are based purely on that, and some lecture. His lectures are pretty standard. He does however add a lot of personal but relevant narrative to make it more interesting and applicable. Great professor.
He's a character. Definitely interesting class.
One of the most interesting classes I've ever taken.
He's amazing. Just be prepared to write notes. He loves to teach and the class is super fun.
Denman is the best prof I've ever had! I took his anthro 1&2 consecutively. Staying on top of the textbook reading is crucial, exams are pushed back a few days and are UCLA level! His classes are SO fun and easy to look forward to. He's such a character and really funny and personable. He does his best to help you, but don't text in class!!!
Choné is the MAN Best lectures super supportive clearly states what will be on the test. Couldn''t ask for a better professor. It is MANDATORY to pay attention to lectures AND do all of the reading if you want more than a C in this class.
I took Chone's class over summer and it was the best decision ever. Even with the class sped up to fit 6 weeks, it was still the most awesome, thought-provoking, and engaging class ever! Chone made me minor in anthro--it was that good. He is the best prof--so funny and authentic!
Lectures are very informative, entertaining and kept me engaged. This course with Professor Denman has shifted my thoughts and interests more in the Anthropology field. Great teacher and great lectures. I would recommend taking this course, you will be enlightened, inspired and engaged in his lectures.
Amazing Class!!! If I could I would definitely take him again! Makes class really interesting and fun hes a great story teller as well which makes class even more fun! It is essential that you read the books, they are not that hard to read and are quiet interesting! Absolutely loved his class !!!
Professor Denman is a fantastic professor. He has the rare ability to captivate a classroom and is extremely knowledgeable. If you are planning on taking physical anthropology I highly recommend taking the course with Professor Denman. Reading the book and attending the class everyday is essential to succeed. Exams are difficult so read the book!
Most important thing: professor Denman does not want you to fail! His class is very interesting and I recommend it to social science majors. It is true that the tests are hard, but the class is curved so it really helps. I have built up an A although I started with a C. Three tests, one zoo project, don't skip class, be serious and READ the book!
I took this course over the winter session and it was a great experience. There are 2 exams, a final and a zoo project. Master the reading in the textbook and study your lecture notes and you will get an A. Also, make sure to fully comprehend what you're reading rather than just memorizing because some questions on the exams are tricky. Good luck!
His lectures are amazing! If you do well in his class & get an A he is willing to write you an awesome letter of recommendation. He was kind enough to write me one & it helped me receive an interview for a scholarship. I'm currently waiting to see how much money i'll receive & I can't thank him enough! TAKE HIM! You won't regret it; I guarantee it.
John is awesome! Really loved the course because of his passion and the way he was able to stay engaged with the class. Definitely not an easy A, though. You'll have to keep up with readings since the tests are fairly difficult, but there's a huge curve so it's not impossible to pass. Definitely recommend!
John is a great guy, as well as an amazing professor. Took both his Anthro 1, and 2 classes. Good amount of work - no reason to drop the course. Earning a B in this class is just as valuable to your education as earning an A in any other course.
John is hands down the best professor I have ever had during my college career. He's clear in his lectures & gets you interested in anything he's talking about. He's animated & will have you cracking up from beginning to end. He's always there if you need help but you have to be in class & you HAVE to read. You won't regret taking his class!
I am currently a fourth year Anthropology major at UCLA and I must say that John Denman is THE BEST professor that I have encountered at any institution that I have attended. His knowledge of the subject matter and his lectures are second to none and he is truly invested in the learning experience of his students.
I am currently a fourth year Anthropology major at UCLA and I must say that John Denman is THE BEST professor that I have encountered at any institution that I have attended. His knowledge of the subject matter and his lectures are second to none and he is truly invested in the learning experience of his students. He inspired me to major in anthro.
Anthro1 with John at SMC has been my favorite class so far. Condensed summer meant class 4x a week, fast-paced, but charged with really interesting stuff and he's great at keeping you engaged. Tests are hard but all curved, so all relative. Pay attention, take notes, don't look at your phone, and read the book, and you are gold.
unlike most professors, he keeps you interested! very humerous, i loved his personality. see him for office hours if you need any help or just want to chat, he listens and gives great feedback. my favorite professor yet.
Denman is a very interesting guy with great lectures. He isn't super helpful when it comes to studying for test and the tests are hard, make sure to study. Basically all you need to pass this class are good notes and the textbook. He grades on a curve though, otherwise nobody would ever pass his tests. You can get an A if you study alot.
John is the best. He has so much experience as an anthropologist, making his lectures extremely fascinating. Not only is he well-versed, but he is also HILARIOUS. Weaving clever jokes into personal stories and credible information is his forte. Attendance is mandatory, but it doesn't matter since John will make you want to come to class. Take him.
Prepares students for university. He treats and teaches his course at university level. He is knowledgeable on the subject matter and uses interesting anecdotes throughout the semester. Tests are challenging but if you apply yourself you will be rewarded.
He has such an awesome personality and really loves what he does. His class is full of lectures. It is not an easy A but easy to earn. No homework what so ever. The key to this class is to study and pay attention which isn't hard because he is hilarious and he has the most interesting stories! I would definitely take his class again.
One of the most interesting classes I've ever taken, and really inspires an interest and passion in human beings. Still one of my favorite professors. He gives amazing stories and lectures. Tests are UCLA difficult but they are curved and he's very specific as to what you'll be tested on. Pay close attention in lectures.
This guy makes his class harder then it should be take some one else if you can
John, aka Choney, is my brother from another mother. This is the first time I've completely dissolved in laughter in class. Attendence, punctuality, and reading the material (2 or 3 times) is essential. I also appreciate the life lessons on raising children and marriage. TAKE THIS CLASS!
He will waste a ton of time on his stories but pay attention to his lectures nonetheless because he will point out hints of topics that will be on the exams. Show up for class and get easy points each day, however if you were to still miss a class, catch up, it was important.
My 2nd class with John. It was just as spectacular as the first. Attendance is mandatory, but you get a lot a points for it. Tests are challenging, but he goes over all the material in his amazing lectures and directs you to the textbook for any additional information. Very fair and understanding. Take him.
I took Professor Denman's Physical Anthropology class at SMC. He is very likable, and he is really passionate about Anthropology. Lectures are interesting, but can boring. (He mixes in some good stories.) The tests are multiple choice and curved, but are RIDICULOUSLY DIFFICULT. He is easily the hardest grading professor at SMC I have had so far.
Professor Denman was an excellent professor this past summer session of 2016. Attendance is crucial because he'll give you an entire test grade on your attendance worth 150 points!! Those are easy points. It shouldn't be difficult to come to class because Professor Denman makes every lecture engaging and funny. Tests are curved!!
I took a summer course with Denman it was, indeed, heavy. I definitely had to work hard for the grade I wanted, and it wasn't at all an easy task. However, the class was a pleasure. Prof. Denman is passionate, funny, and makes the subject fascinating even for those showing little interest. I'm glad there are people like him teaching. Inspirational.
I took his Anthro 2 over the summer and he was awesome. It was really reading intensive, 2 ethnographies and the entire text book save for 2 or 3 chapters. But he really does tell you everything you need to know in lecture so you have to go to class but it's a fun class. He's got anecdotes galore and even a nick name but I won't ruin it for you.
One of the greatest professors at SMC. His lectures are hilarious, yet you still learn an immense amount of information. Very progressive, he makes you want to learn as much about Cultural Anthropology as possible. You will pass if you read the course material and come to class. Just being in class gives you a generous amount of points.
Denman IS amazing! Could not express enough to you all. If and if you ever have the chance take denman for Anthro 2, his lectures along with his life experience IS worth the class. But also be PREPARE to read, as long as you read and read and read, you will be okay!
John was absolutely amazing! Although it was only my first semester of college, I honestly believe he will still be my favorite professor at the time I graduate. The lectures are entertaining, and students are dying to get into his class. While there is reading required, none of it is too difficult. If you read and pay attention, you're good!
Professor John is an unbelievable teacher. He is the funniest teacher I've taken. His lectures are entertaining and he expects you to listen. He hints what will be on the tests. However, his exams are UCLA level which are really hard but his exams are curved. Great great teacher even though I don't believe in evolution I appreciate him teaching it
okay. i am going to be 100% honest. this is a very difficult course. a lot of reading. honestly so much. but john is such a good teacher. so so kind. i cant even put it into words. i didnt get the grade i wanted, but it was worth it. almost a life changing changing class, really. take it. maybe u wont get an A but u will be glad u took the class.
John is an amazing professor who is truly passionate about cultural anthro. His enthusiasm is absolutely inspiring; I wish all professors were this committed to their students' success. This is one of those classes I will always remember and look back at fondly. Show commitment and make a sincere effort, and it will be a very rewarding experience.
BEST Anthro professor! Even though I didn't get the grade I wanted, at the same time I can't even get mad because I didn't work hard enough but he is the best professor and his lectures/experiences/stories are the best. his exams are bit hard but if you really want to pass his exam, YOU must read the book - I mean, every detail in those chapters, REMEMBER THOSE! including the ones he wants you to read because even the tiniest detail you think you don't need, that might pop up in the exam.
John is such a wonderful person and an exceptional professor. I took him for cultural anthro and liked him so much that I took his physical anthro class as well. His tests are very hard, but don't worry b/c the grading is curved (if you get one of about 7 highest scores, you get an A!). He shares wonderful stories that make the class interesting.
One of the most competent, intelligent, and personable educators I have ever met. I am rarely enthused by any class experience, however the stimulating discussion points and adept lecturing style made both this class and the material absolutely enthralling. I cannot say enough good things of Uncle Choné, a truly inspiring instructor.
This class was hard! That being said it is the best classes I have taken at SMC. John is such a caring, wonderful teacher. Lectures are entertaining, witty, and I always looked forward to class! This class is not an easy, but you won't regret taking it! LISTEN in class, he gives hints on what to focus on. John does not give a study guide!
John Denman is a great teacher! He is so funny and personable! This class was the hardest class I have ever taken, but I absolutely loved it. This class will prepare you and make you a better student. Make sure you take really good notes, listen to everything he says in class, and memorize the book! If you want to get an A, STUDY STUDY STUDY!!
Funny, intelligent professor. Exams are extremely tough unless you have perfect recall. However, it graded on a curve so you just have to outdo your peers.
He was the best professor I had while going to SMC. And it wasn't even close. His lectures were entertaining and informative. You use the book. He's not like one of those professors who make you buy the book but you don't use it and you waste your money. If you want to have a class that you look forward to going to, take John Denman.
You have to study extremely hard to get an A in this class. This class was stressful, but Professor Denman is awesome. If you're looking for an EASY A, this probably isn't the class for you. But if you have a lot of time and want to take on a challenge - it's possible to get an A, I did!
John's class has been the best I've taken at SMC. His lectures can be hilarious and deeply moving, especially the stories about Fiji or Washoe. He's also incredibly supportive of his students and it shows in his work! It's not an easy A but I'd recommend him any day. Come for the great stories, stay to feel accomplished (if you put in honest work).
The staments are true an estimated 50% of the questions in the exams are in the required books are never covered in the lecture. I got a C because I did not work very hard. I roughly spent 30 minutes on each ethnography. I never regret, would I since I am not for grades, but for his amazing lectures and personal stories.
John is the best professor I've had at SMC. I took his Anthro 2 Cultural and Anthro 1 Physical anthropology classes. He is inspiring and caring. He's accessible outside class and always willing to chat not only about the course, but about your future goals. His tests will prepare you for university, but he also curves them. TAKE HIS CLASSES!
Both hilarious and inspiring, challenging and helpful, John was one of my favorite professors ever. His material and anecdotes were highly interesting, perfectly solidifying the information for his tests, which can be quite difficult. Always helpful, and straightforward. I miss him lol
Best professor yet. If you want to have at least one class that not only improves your knowledge, but makes you feel good too TAKE HIM! He really rocks! Not easy tests, but take notes in the ways he advises and u got it!
One of the best teachers ever. His lectures are extremely immersive & hilarious, and it's rare to have a teacher who's genuinely passionate about the subject matter. Regarding his tests, he is transparent and on the first day tells you how the test is structured/what will be on it. Follow this exactly, you'll get the grade. Def take this class!
He is a great professor! He doesn't have any assignments except a couple extra credit. He just does two midterms and a final! If you show up, do your readings and study before the tests you will do just fine!
Chone is one (if not the best) teacher I have had so far during my years in college. I was taking his class for GE, but it didn't feel like I was taking a required class. He is hilarious and makes the class relevant. I have no regrets taking Anthropology 2 with him and would do so again. TAKE HIM!
Do not take! his class is based on a curve, which is great if you just wanna pass but he gives the students he likes the A in the end if the points are close. if you look at his grade distribution he gives out mostly C's and his distribution isnt consistent with what he claims. Hes a interesting teacher but grading isnt fair! had a 4.0 before this.
Unless you're a dedicated anthro major, avoid Denman. He's very nice man and a good professor. But his exams are extremely difficult - asks so many specific questions that is impossible to catch during readings. Taking his class right now and currently getting a good grade only bc I attend all classes and study hours and hours for the exams.
He's funny but the lectures and readings are not at face value with the tests. His exams are brutal and he's very proud of that. I had a 4.0 before this class. Avoid him if you can.
He has amazing lectures and is caring professor. Always there to help you via e-mail or in person for questions. The class requires lots of reading (but the ethnographies are fun to read)! His test are very details so read and memorize the special sections. Very hard to get an A but you can do it if you study hard enough.
He gets off topic a lot, we have wasted about 40 min of class time on pointless things. His test are hard and I suggest to study a lot and carefully read the book. He seems really passionate about his job which is good but he is a tough professor, he doesnt like when people come in late/ on phones because he will kick you out .
Prof. Denman would make a "cool highschool teacher", but def not a good college professor. He certainly is/tries to be entertaining! If you are looking for cheap jokes +just a passing grade, take his class. His lectures are irrelevant and useless at test time. I learned very little about anthro+ got a C like most. I had a 4.0 before this class!
Okay so if you are a visual learner you wont do well in this class, it's mainly lectures with some basic powerpoints. His lectures are really interesting and funny though. No homework just 3 tests which are curved. He is funny but don't think he wont kick you out of class if you're on your phone. It's like a UC lecture, no participation.
Professor Denman is very engaging to listen to and has world experience that most do not. Very intelligent individual if not brilliant. Very inspirational and overall Excellent human.
Truly did not enjoy this class. He's a nice person, but lectures were so unrelated to the exams. also, Exams were IMPOSSIBLE! I spent countless hours reading and studying the textbook but still performed poorly on the exam. The difficulty of this class is unnecessary for an introductory anthro class.
This was by far the HARDEST class I have ever taken in my academic career. Do not sign up for this class unless you are ready to work. You will not do well in this class if you are not self-directed and don't study a little every day. However, this has been one of the most rewarding classes ever. I learned so much, and John is hilarious.
Extremely hard class. There is so much info on the tests and all of the questions are multiple choice, but he intentionally does trick questions, so read each question very carefully. Make flashcards and study guides. ALSO FIND SOMEONE TO STUDY WITH IN YOUR CLASS! AND DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!!! DO ALL OF IT!! IT WILL SAVE YOUR GRADE.
Professor Denman made me love anthropology and kept me engaged the entire class! I looked forward to his class every week :) Tests are very hard and require a lot of studying from outside what he taught in class, but he curves the tests.
John is a truly incredible teacher. He is engaging, hilarious, and truly a remarkable character. Santa Monica College is lucky to have him. Anthro 2 was a lot easier than anthro 1. That being said, don't slack! Take detailed notes from the lecture. Make clear study guides from the book! Know the terms!! The class is curved. 3 exams. Some EC.
The strickest teacher ever!!!!!!
Simply put, he has amazing lectures and stories in general. But you basically have to teach yourself by reading, then he uses a long story to explain the chapter. Just come to class.
You Must READ the Textbook & SHOW Up To Class. Professor Denman Is Passionate & Funny In His Lectures. However, Make Sure YOU Do 90% of The Work Outside Of Class.(10% Is Hist Lectures) - Make Sure You Read, Take Notes, And Studying). There Are 2 Midterms, 1 Project, And 1 Final. Attendance & The Textbook Is Necessary To Pass! Dont Use Your Phone!
He's an AMAZING professor! Honestly one of the best I've ever had! He's passionate about the subject and he makes the lectures actually entertaining and enjoyable. He finds a way to turn every lecture into a story which makes it that much easier to learn. His exams are graded on a curve and there's a final zoo project due at the end. Amazing class!
A self-proclaimed rambler, John Denman will pack each and every class chock-full of information not only about anthropology, but about life, current news, family, and any topic that may come up. The test are hard, but as long as you do the reading and attend class, you'll be fine. Be sure to get a buddy or two to take good notes for you/study with.
Johns Cult. Anthro 2 class inspired me to major in Anthro! Tests are hard. 2 midterms, 1 final are your only grades in the class, so STUDY! I'm taking my 2nd class w him- Anthro1 even though HS Biology was HARD for me but so far got an A on the first midterm! His lecturing style is really fun & really makes info memorable with related stories&jokes
COVID-19 online version. Realest Professor I've ever had! Wasn't so interested in Anthro but now I'm such a geek about it. He sometimes talks more than he needs to, to the point where he dismisses you a few minutes after class. 3 (2 Midterms/1 Final) VERY DIFFICULT exams but the curve saves you so don't worry. Ask him questions, no excuse to fail.
Took Prof Denman's class in fall 2020 & it was awful. We were supposed to have a zoom class which he chose not to do & there were 0 assignments til the midterm which was insane - 1 question per minute, 75 mins long & he didn't mention that the stuff from his vids would be on there too. Never responds, did nothing, & I had to drop to save my 3.9 GPA
Covid19 online version. Passionate prof! Clear grading; everyone passes as long as they take all the exams. NO Zoom, homework, discussions or papers - your grade is all on YOU. 2 Midterms and 1 Final exam. Video lectures/podcasts on YouTube every week with Powerpoint slides in the video, NOT separate. Frequent office hours and fast email replies.
COVID online class, recorded lectures only, no papers/discussions, optional office hours, 2 Midterms and 1 Final. Class is like a Primate Biology class, not as general as other sections/professors. Exams are hard; told curve 25% A, 50% B, 25% C, D's and F's if missing exams. Given that not sure how he will grade. No handouts or term lists.
Covid online class exams only, no discussions, or homework. 2 midterms, 1 final, everyone passes as long as they take all tests. He literally gives you the questions and answers if you watch his lectures. Screenshot or recreate the PowerPoint slides as he doesn't give them out. He sounds sad when he sees low scores, he really cares that you learn
Professor Denman's class is easy if you study and follow his lectures. Good sense of humor and grades on a curve but these tests are far from easy.
Pandemic online class no homework or discussions only 2 midterms and final. In Anthro 1 the lectures had everything to do with the exams NOT THE SAME in Anthro 2 - he rambles! There are 3 books you must read - without them you will get a C. No one fails if you take all 3 tests (regardless of score - just taking them counts) and watch the videos.
Prof. Denman is amazing. His lectures aren't too long, the tests aren't too hard (and graded on a curve) and his cultural anthro class is very informative and enjoyable. Super fun professor too.
His lectures are long and frustrating to listen through bc he rambles on and tells too many stories. Regardless, he grades on a curve. Everyone passes no matter if you fail the tests as long as you take it. If you apply yourself, you will do well. Lots of reading too. Follow his weekly schedule of lectures & chapter readings - dont fall behind.
One of, if not my favorite college professors over the years. Denman makes lectures fun and engaging while teaching a great deal of material.
Denman was one of my favorite professors I've had in college hands down. His lectures are entertaining, informative, and accessible. Whether or not you need to take it for credit, I would highly suggest taking this course.
He is a great proffessor though the lectures arent very interactive but they are really interesting. I loved him & see why he's been "Best Professor" several times. The grades are attendance points, 2 midterms, & a final all on a curve. Really fair but definetely not an easy A, do reading & pay attention!
Denman is a great professor, one of the best I've ever taken, I see why he's been "Best Professor" at SMC several times. Lectures arent discussion based but he is so entertaining and very experienced in the field! I switched my major to Anthro because of him! Grades are based on attendance, 2 midterms, & the final. Very fair but do the reading!
Denman is a professor that you will remember for the rest of your life. I cannot tell you how much I learned in his class, because the lessons were more than curriculum. Denman is a true anthropologist, a humanitarian, a scholar. He's w it. Take the class. Doesnt make a different if you are doing it for credit, or your degree. Its worth it, trust.
Denman is head-and-shoulders above every other great professor I've had! His lectures are clear, EXTREMELY funny, and engaging enough to distract anyone from their phone. I've never seen such an attentive class. He grades on a curve, so the tests can be pretty...daunting. Pay attention on syllabus day, take extensive notes in class, and study.
John Denman is one of, if not THE, greatest teacher/professor I have ever had. He is incredibly engaging, funny, and overall an inspiration for the field of anthropology. I took his anth 1 and 2 courses at SMC and I just received a bachelor's in anthro and environmental science.
John is one of my favorites. He made a boring subject into something super interesting. He is super passionate about what he teaches. His videos are some the best things I've every seen. The tests are fairly hard but are graded on a curve so it's not that bad. Actual subject matter is mainly memorization. Probably my favorite class I've taken
Professor Denman, was the worst professor I have ever encountered and taken. His lack of respect for his students time and schedule showed just how much he valued his students. One hour classes became almost two, and his lectures would drift into unknowing and irrelevant topics to say the least. I strongly advise you to not take this class.
John Denman is hands down the best professor I've had at SMC. While I'm not an anthropology student, I found his lectures extremely engaging, and his class procedures really easy to follow. While this by no means is an easy class (super difficult tests--graded on a curve), Denman's hilarious lectures made up for the somewhat large reading load.
He is legit so funny and engaging and his lectures are awesome. GO TO CLASS AND READ ALL THE BOOKS AND CHAPTERS. Thats literally all you need to do to get an A in the class, especially since he gives A's to the top 20% of the class. Hes so amazing and interesting, it shouldnt be too hard to get an A if you read, go to class, and study.
I think John is very entertaining but his lectures were very disorganized. It was hard to differentiate his stories from actual class content. Lectures are the smallest portion of questions on tests, but if you miss class you lose points. Tests are mostly based off of textbook/books but textbook questions will often focus on niche details.
I'm normally not the type to write reviews for professors, but professor Denman was excellent enough to warrant an exception. I'll be brief because of the character limit, but, if you can, TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Professor Denman is enormously understanding, provides great lectures on interesting material, and outlines exactly what to do to get an A.
There is a lot of work to do in his class, so get ready to read. However, he is super funny and cares about his students so you won't regret taking his course.
Easily the worst anthro professor I've ever taken
He is fun and kind but has a super antiquated way of teaching. I spent hours reading only for the test questions to be worded in a way that tricks you. Honestly spare yourself the trouble.
He is very energetic and I really like his lecture style. Although the exams are very difficult for someone whose first language is not English, as long as you delve deeply into his lectures or enjoy his style and study hard, an A is easily within reach! The competition of grading curve is kinda harsh, but he rewards those who put in the effort.
One of the most fantastic professors you'll ever find. He structures classes like those at UCLA (he's doing you a favor) so make time to read all the assignments, take notes as you go, create flashcards (date ones you memorize & set aside for review before exams. Keep committing others to memory, date, repeat), pace yourself and you'll be ok.
Professor Denman is an engaging lecturer, though his classes can be disorganized at times. The workload is heavy, with mandatory attendance and extensive reading. However, if you stay on top of the material and use helpful study tools like unstuckstudy ai, you can excel in the course. Overall, an interesting class with a passionate professor.
John is such an incredible prof. His class is truly so engaging. Attendance is mandatory, we are given points per each session attended. The midterms are based on the textbook, the books(one per each midterm), and the lectures he gives in class. Midterms are graded on a curve. Take notes, read, and pay attention and you'll pass his class.
The class is graded based on a few exams, they are multiple choice but he assigns ethnographies, so as a stem major it can be difficult to squeeze them into your schedule. He's a nice guy, and I think his lectures are interesting! I wish he gave more extra credit though. Overall enjoyable class just don't disregard it.
This class was super entertaining and john is easily one of the funniest professors I've had. However YOU MUST READ! I crammed all the reading which really left me brain dead post midterms and final. (There's 2 midterms) the tests are also super difficult but if you read and pay attention his grading curve really helps
He's really funny so you'll probably forget to read the ethnographies like I did. If you're a stem major honestly just start reading day one so you won't be behind.
This is not a class to take to get an easy A. I get A's in a lot of classes but this class requires a lot of studying. Professor also said things like they were facts with no clear sources. He's interesting but definitely just loves to talk.
He prepares you for upper division course work. I'm a casual student who procrastinates. That being said I was dealing with a lot outside of class but I passed with B. I could've got an A if I read the textbook at best I looked into the objectives and skimmed through important pictures/charts. But you HAVE to watch the lectures. Take notes.
He asks for to much, and requires a textbook
This is the best professor at SMC. Grew so much as a student and a person because of this class. Exams are hard but he does a class curve. John is an all around great dude and great professor. Not an easy A, but if you're down to work hard a little and anthropology sounds cool this will be your favorite class.
