Real cool teacher... def the best! He makes the material fun and explains it so well. Gives you the outline of all exams and even gives examples of what will be on the exam. 3 papers arent that hard and neither are the exams. but take notes on his lectures because they are helpful!
The first day of class your head will spin because he talks really loud. I didn't mind listening to his lectures and corny jokes though. It kept the mood of the class tolerable especially becuz the material isn't what I'm into. The only thing is he is he used to be an english professor and he grades his papers like one. I never seen so much red
He's absolutely adorable! Sooo funny! He talks really loud though...but that's good 'cause you won't fall as sleep. He's really clear and interesting to listen to. Only 2 papers and 2 exams, but he's an easy grader. I would take him again anytime! Highly recommended!!!
he was a nice professor just grades paper really strict and yeah he's extra loud lol.
If you aren't a good writer, I suggest you take someone else.
Professor Dern was one of my favorite professors at temple so far. took him for mosaics II and he made the class interesting and his lectures are very easy to follow even though its such dry, boring material. grades papers hard, but if you take notes in class papers should be easy. can pass with good grade w/o texts if you hardcore cram. love him!
Loud, nice, but obnoxious. Very picky grader...to a fault even. He will split hairs and it's very annoying and unnecessary. Nice guy, but hated his class. Got an A in all of English classes, high school and college, but was struggling to pull above a C in his class. Convinced he can't grade. Would recommend ear protection. No, seriously.
Dr. Dern is a good professor but he grades papers pretty harshly, and the exams were kind of hard. If you're not at all interested in the books I would suggest taking someone else but if you plan on reading the books you'll do fine and maybe even enjoy the class.
Good teacher. Loves the material and his discussions really help you understand the material, especially if you don't read it, even though I don't recommend doing that because he is a hard grader and test can be tough. Very very loud speaker, so get used to it. All and all, he means well and make mosaics a class that you can deal with.
My only problem with Dr. Dern is that he tries to connect all the curriculum with Freud. In my opinion Freud's writings have no business being read in entirety in the 21st century. But he's a nice enough guy. I don't think he's a hard grader, he just has realistic expectations that college kids can't seem to deal with these days.
There's either something wrong with most graders below that said he's hard, or he has become harder since I last took him - which was during 2009. I had him twice for both IHs, and got an A- with average effort. Dr. Dern is one of the nicest professors I have. He explained the materials so well, and his tests aren't even hard. Take him at all cost!
VERY hard class. He is an extremely hard grader, but it is what Temple needs especially concerning papers. He is extremely nice and brings alot of excitement tot he class. Be prepared to read ALOT.
Worst professor I've ever had.Dropped Honors to take his class and got a lower grade. Asks questions about the most minute, irrelevant details on tests. You will have to read about 4000 pages of text very closely to get an A in his class.Met with him outside of class to express concern for my grade. Completely unwilling to help or give extra credit.
Funny, goofy guy, but pretty much says all the test answers during class so you have to show up and pay attention. Really helpful outside of class as well- he helped me edit both my essays. If you just follow what is expected of you, you'll do really well.
Dr. Dern is an extremely engaging man, and in class I found myself equally as engaged in all of them. He definitely creates an intimate, open-minded atmosphere in his class. Dr. Dern clearly outlines what he will test on exams and through papers. If you're paying attention, this class is both interesting and highly entertaining.
Excellent professor, very funny.Relies heavily on class participation so attendance is all but a must. The exams require preparation but all the questions will have either come up in class or on the study guide. Connects everything to freud which can be annoying but also amusing.Extremely helpful during office hours. Strongly recommend you take him.
Proffesor is very helpful if you pay attention and go to class. As long as you pay attention in class the tests are easy he goes ever almost every question on the test in class before hand. Very easy teacher reccommend taking him for Mosaics.
Professor Dern is honestly one of the greatest professor's at Temple! He is hilarious, very intelligent, and super nice! He makes the texts so interesting and pulls them together. He makes you want to learn! If you can take him, do it! It will be one of the best decisions you will ever make at Temple!
he was a horrible teacher! Such a rude and ridiculous grader! not funny, super boring and was hard to talk to. do not take! he thinks mosaics is important..... but it really inst.
This guy is amazing. The most engaging and entertaining professor I've had at Temple. He makes a lot of jokes and references which I found hilarious but I can understand if people find it annoying. Discussion based class, if you participate like you should time flies by. Two very easy tests, two short essays which you can revise, and participation.
Awesome professor. Never a dull class with him. Discussions draw from the readings and provide the basis for easy participation questions. Study guide questions are the exact questions on the tests. Hard essay grader but you get to revise and if you go to office hours he's more than happy to show you exactly what he wants on your paper.
Overall, Professor Dern is a great professor. He is very energetic and sometimes make jokes. His lectures are mainly open discussion about the readings and participation is part of your final grade. His exams are very tricky. You MUST read the materials if you want a good grade.
Although this course has tons of Books you need to read if you follow his in class lectures then the books will be easier to understand.
Yes he is a hard essay grader but if you put in work you can receive a B's on his papers. The most important thing is his midterm and final because they are worth the most. Although I always averaged B's on the essays I got As on the midterm and final and finished class with an A. You just have to do the study questions and you'll be fine.
Professor Dern is awesome. Show up every day, participate, and laugh at his jokes and he will love you. I had a great time. Easily the nicest man I've ever met, but how tough he grades will sneak up on you. Would definitely take again
Professor Dern is a really great professor. Super passionate about mosaics. The books were pretty boring, but if you pay attention, takes notes, and attend class everyday you'll pass. I got two B's on both papers, and A's on the midterm and final. Bring your books to class and highlight what he reads, everything ended up on the exam review sheet.
Is really energetic and lively during his classes. I would absolutely take him if you get the chance.
Great teacher. Really energetic, almost to the point of being a little loud at points, but that's the closest thing to negative comment I have. 3 papers, couple of discussion board posts, mid-term, and a final. There's weekly study sessions you can go to and get extra points toward the midterm/final that really helps. 10 and 12 points respectively.
A fantastic professor! He is incredibly enthusiastic about his class and really brings the books to life in Mosaic 1. He is a bit of a tough paper grader but he gives very detailed feedback on the rough draft. I loved him so much I emailed him to beg to be in his Mosaic II class. This is my first ever teacher review, that is how much i loved him.
Dr. Dern is a great professor and person. Super intelligent and passionate about what he does. Hes also hilarious and loves to talk about Freud. I look forward going to his class everyday! And every class I seem to actually learn something from him! Participate in class and he will love you. There are papers but has office hrs if you need help.
Dr. Dern is clearly passionate about the subject matter, which can be overwhelming at times, but overall, he's a great guy who does his best to make dry material exciting and relevant. Gives great feedback, not a hard class. Take close notes on what he says in class and the quotes he reads and you'll ace every paper and test
He is my favorite professor at Temple. I would take his class 100 times if I could! He knows what he is talking about. Prof. Dern can be a tough paper grader, but he gives great feedback and you do a revision. Do the study questions! They are basically the midterm/final! Overall, 10/10 recommended.
Two papers, some discussion board posts, and two tests. All easily graded, some level of participation is a must but he makes it easy to join discussions. Very approachable.
One of the best professors here at Temple. He's energetic and makes the material more fun and engaging. You only have two exams (a midterm and a final), two papers, and maybe a couple small, easy assignments. His essay grading looks intimidating because he will make a lot of suggestions, most people do very well on them if they put in the effort.
Prof. Dern gave fairly moderately interesting lectures about otherwise boring material. He makes class discussions easy and engaging, and you can participate even if you're not caught up on the reading. Two medium-difficulty tests, and his constructive feedback on the two assigned essays makes bringing your grade up to an A very doable.
His only volume is a yell which made a 9am lecture particularly painful. However, he is very kind and willing to help his students. There are few assignments and they are all pretty easy.
He is always willing to help students. Go to class and take notes, you will get an easy A.
The GOAT
This man is an angel. Easily one of the nicest people I've ever met. The 2 tests are annoying to study for, but do the study questions and you'll get an A. For the papers, go to his office hours to have him check it, and you'll get an A. Not mandatory to read the book, just listen in class. Take him if you have the chance you won't regret.
Professor Dern is THE man. He obviously loves his job and wants his students to do well. If you show up and act interested, you will pass. The only bad thing I have to say about the man is that he speaks loudly, but otherwise he is fantastic. TAKE. HIS. CLASS.
Professor Dern is one of those professors who is teaching because he loves to, which is honestly rare. He's energetic, which can be surprising, but he's funny and lovable. There are a few pop quizzes, but if you have your book he gives the page numbers that have the answers. Assignments are relatively easy. Such a sweet man with so much passion.
Prof. Dern is a top notch man. If you want a professor who can get through heavy material easily and one who gives very little assignments, Dern is your man. He teaches 8 AMs generally and is very loud, but if you can deal with that (I promise you, make yourself deal with it), he is the best. Show up, you'll pass. Two small assignments, two papers.
Professor Dern is the BEST. TAKE HIS CLASS. As long as you come to class and be attentive, it is an easy A. You will have two papers, two quizzes, a midterm, final, and some minor assignments. Not hard at all. Also he is super accessible for office hours and he wants his students to succeed. Just a super down to earth guy! You won't regret it!
Love his energy !!!! 100% RECOMMENDED
The amount of work for this gen ed is laughable. He thinks that his class is the most important, which is ridiculous. The books you have to read are very dry, and unless you know them like the back of your hand, youre not going to do well on the papers or tests. His grading system is also ridiculous. If you care about your GPA, stay away.
GENUINELY THE BEST PROFESSOR I'VE HAD IN MY LIFE! If you have the oppurtunity to take him, DO IT! No quizzes or work for lecture, literally just story time on the books we read for class. He has the best personality of anyone, I've ever met. He can be a little over the top happy at times, but his enthusiasm and leniency always brings you up. GOAT
PROFESSOR DERN IS THE BOMB!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is amazing!!! Only 1 paper and a couple quizzes and assignments. He is very understanding and caring. I RECOMMEND HIM!!!!! TAKE HIM!!!!!!
PROFESSOR DERN IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!!!!!! I had him for IH 1 and the class is so easy. 2 papers, 1 revision, 2 quizzes, and the midterm and final. It's the most fun and amazing class i have ever taken. He is so energetic and loves too help. He is always reachable outside of class at any time. I am thrilled i took his class. YOU WONT REGRET IT!!!!!
The man I thought was easy from his reviews, but when i took the class he was the total opposite. All his reviews are just based on the guys personality, but personality don't matter when he grades harshly. He has you write 2 essays which he grades so tough. Considering the class was morning he was TOO loud!
Such a great man!! He is so sweet and loves teaching. He does grade pretty tough, but not unfair. Need to work hard for an A but such a great teacher. Take him if you can
This is the best course I have taken since graduating from middle school. Professor Dern is extremely high-spirited and energetic. The class portion is basically class discussions and reading the book. You can get a ton out of this class if you participate and ask questions. He grades his papers decently hard but it is a phenomenal class to take.
Professor Dern was so sweet and he clearly loves his job. However, he graded pretty harshly for an IH class. While I was taking a midterm and final for this class, my friends were doing very simple projects for their IH classes. He's such a nice and funny guy, but I wish he simplified the class a bit to make it more enjoyable instead of stressful.
All of the assignments given throughout the semester were very reasonable and as long as you go to class and pay attention you will do well. He made the stuff we were learning interesting and I looked forward going to class :)
Prof. Dern is SO fun. He's loud and energetic but it's very fun. 100/10
I wanna lead by saying that I don't leave reviews on here ever, but Professor Dern is genuinely the best professor I've had and I am building my next semester schedule around taking one of his classes again. He barely assigns homework or work and his tests are open book. He is a very excitable man and you can tell he loves his job and teaching.
Super nice guy, you can get away with not reading when you show up with class but he has two papers you need to write and a quiz or two (super easy).
Best prof at Temple, he's passionate and excited about the material. Super easy classes and quizzes (most were open note, so was the midterm). I didn't finish a single book because he just went over them in class. He's super funny and if you just talk once a week he'll love you.
I have been in this man's class for 15 minutes and already hopped on here to give 5 stars. Professor Dern is a king, 100% take IH with him.
Dern is mad easy. You don't have to read at all, he just explains the books every class. Just try to pay attention in class. His exams aren't that hard and his essays aren't either. He's very fun and brightened my day.
Dern was a pretty understanding, friendly guy who was passionate about what he was teaching. It felt like he was rooting for me to increase my grade and gave me all the resources to do just that.
One of my favorite professors; I took IH1 with him and liked him so much that I scheduled my spring semester around making sure that I would have him for IH2. He's very passionate and has deep knowledge on what he teaches and provides tons of feedback to improve your writing. The workload is light and he is a very kind and caring professor.
He is VERY passionate about what he teaches and will crack a lot of jokes. Are they funny? Not really, but that's ok. I took IH and he assigned about as little work as you can expect from a college course. You don't really have to read for him either, he goes over all the important parts of every book assigned in class. 10/10 would take him again.
Not a difficult professor but you could definitely find an easier IH professor if you don't want to have to worry about spending a lot of time on your Gen Eds. His papers are super easy, but his quizzes are really hard if you don't FULLY read each book, and there are like 10 books throughout the class. He's also way too perky in the morning
Dern is a great IH professor. He is energetic and enthused for every class. He can be a harsh grader for papers, but points are deducted primarily for grammar. The midterm and final uses questions pulled right from the study questions for each text. Take good notes of what he says in class, and have your papers reviewed by the writing center first.
Great teacher, very funny and joyful. Pretty easy assignment-wise, and offers a week extension on the two big assignments. He's so loud though. so so loud.
He is a funny nice dude but he is a tough grader. His quizzes and exams are worded weirdly and sometimes are tricky. He expects thorough answers for exams but if it is not thorough enough you will probably get it wrong. He is a harsh grader for papers too, edits like everything wrong with them. I wish he would lay back on some harsh grading.
Dern is a great professor and is really passionate about what he teaches. Some people may not like how enthusiastic he is, but if you're able to just relax and go with the flow of the class you'll have fun. Not many assignments and lots of help and extra time given. Honestly not a drag to show up for class because its so lax.
I just wanted to let y'all know that Professor Dern is a very tough grader and his class is NOT an easy A. I love the guy and he has a great personality, but just know that you have to work for your grade because he only has a few assignments which are also heavy so keep that in mind before taking the class.
Overall a great guy, but you can find way easier IH professors. This is a legitimate IH class with tests, 2 essays, and discussion posts. Harsh grader and you will have to read a majority of the books to do well in his class.
Easily my favorite professor at Temple. I had morning classes with him 3 times a week, and it was worth it coming in every time just for his cheery, happy aura. Lectures weren't boring and I enjoyed discussing the books in class. I also found the tests to be really easy, especially if you read the books.
Great professor, if you pay attention to what he says in class it's pretty easy
I do not recommend Professor Dern, if you are looking for a boring professor. His classes are the best! The assignments are very easy but the exams are a bit difficult for international students and must be reviewed carefully. Do not submit assignments late, the consequences are very serious!
I don't recommend Professor Dern because he is the funniest professor in Temple University. His classes are so interesting! Pay attention to review the content in the class, this is what you will be tested on. Don't turn in your homework late, it will cost you your A grade
I recommend Professor Dern because he is the funniest professor in Temple University. His classes are so interesting! Pay attention to review the content in the class, this is what you will be tested on. Don't turn in your homework late, it will cost you your A grade
Professor Dern is the best. He comes into class with full energy everyday. Independent reading is recommended, but not required, because he goes over the reading in class. He is a relatively easy grader and the assignments are easy as well. There are two essays, and he provides great feedback on them. I highly recommend taking his course.
Youre gonna have to read the books, in almost their entirety. He goes over important parts in class but you'll have to read them on your own. A few short, very easy online quizzes, two big papers but he gives detailed feedback and very lenient with grading. Hes nice and very energetic. One of the better IH profs, open to new ideas (kinda loud tho)
Real cool funny guy, very interesting field trips he incorporates into both IH 1 and 2.
Come to class and be ready to read as there will be exams in this class which are closed book. Besides that, Prof. Dern is an amazing person and tries his level best to make the class interesting for his students.
Mr.Dern is for sure a great dude but its not worth taking his class for IH. You can easily find a easier class than his. Grades pretty harshly, has multiple quizzes, essays, a mid term and final compared to other IH classes that only do simple discussion post. You're better off taking a different class, please listen!
He is a very nice guy. Always in a good mood. However, you HAVE to be in class to do good on the exams. Ended up reading around 6 books and he speeds through them all. I would say to make sure you have hard copies of all the texts so you can underline and write what he is saying because you will be tested on it.
This class was an average IHII class, but I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if it weren't for this professor
Good Prof If you enjoy taking IH, he does have 2 exams, and a couple quizzes literally 5 questions VERY EASY and if you pay attention in class/actually read the books you'll be good. Pretty easy class overall and he has good dissuasions. Nice prof, recommend
Professor Dern is sweet, hilarious, and genuinely passionate about every text he teaches. Even the boring ones are fun to read because of his energy. You do need to put in work to get an A, go to class, read before class, do the quizzes, do well on the exam, answer his study questions, and annotate his lectures. Taking him again for IH2
Unfair expectation of the student on his final. A book is required for all text because he constantly cites to it. Non negotiable. His final is too hard. He needs to tone it down. Doesn't care about feedback. 1 sided conversations. Very tough grader. All of the reviews here are about professor dern being a nice guy. He's nice not a good professor.
