Very hard, must do homework, learn a lot
Clear, lets you know what going on, but tests can have (bad) surprises
Go to class and do homework! Don't forget those projects!
He is good at tunneling under you skin, and living inside. But he was helpful.

Nice Guy, Works hard for students, very hard test, take
He is the only Math prof who knows HOW to teach and make you actually GET it.
he carves math equations in pumpkins for halloween

Yep, Great Professor! Beware of those tests. Best lectures ever
Definately need Dersch for the Calc sequence. Best Ever.
Great lectures. Watch out for those tests. Love Math.
My god, the tests!
Hard tests, lots of homework, projects; but you'll learn a lot.
High expectations, but let's you know them up front. LOVES his math!
Fantastic teacher. Hard tests, but nothing that isn't passable.
His final exam for Calc 2 was horrible. Worst exam I've ever taken. I studied for three days straight and got 55%. And, I went into it with an A.
Best teacher I have ever had.
Very Very Difficult. ALways try to get a different Prof.
Test are very hard. He tried to fail me, so that explains everything. I've did everything that was asked of me in the class, and i didn't like it at all.
I had Mr. Dersch for three semesters of calc and he's been a great teacher, hard but fair. I definately know the material when I'm done.
Looks like Robin Williams, only not funny; will belittle you; SAYS he will help-but makes you feel stupid. His tests are meant to be failed. Run while you have the chance!!!
This class is almost impossible! He expects way too much. It doesn't matter if you get A's on homework you will still get a d or an E on his bullcrap tests! Get a different professor!
Very hard, he moves fast, and only goes over stuff once and expects you to know. cool guy though.
HE IS THE MOST DIFFICULT TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. I HAVE A FEELING IF I WOULD HAVE TAKEN SOMEONE ELSES CLASS I WOULD BE DOING FINE. EVEN IF YOU GET ALL THE HELP IN THE WORLD IT WOULDN'T MATTER. HE SHOULD JUST RETIRE. HE SHOULD'VE NEVER BECOME A TEACHER
Mr. Dersch is an extremely dedicated, great teacher. Do your homework and you will be prepared for the tests.
Although he goes into a lot of detail at times, Mr. Dersh is great at working out hard to understand problems. He is also great about working around schedules and working out a time to get his students help. -Thanks Mr. Dersh
He is the wrost teacher i've ever had in my whole entire life. he is not helpful at all. he just makes you feel stupid. he makes me mad when he is trying to seem sooooooooooooooo smart and use "unhealthy" examples in the class.
He is very hard- Be prepared
This guy is a total WHACK job. I have never had a math teacher grade every damn homework sheet. He looks at each problem you do on the homework and marks every one you got right or wrong. Can't help but ask, "Does this guy have a life outside of math
sucks as a teacher worst i have ever had and i like math. looks like robin williams only not funny he thinks he is i would rather listen to a mime tell jokes
He may be a bit harder than the other instructors, but you will really understand what you are doing. He's the best instructor I've ever had. Seriously.
I really liked math until I had this prof. He makes you feel as though you're wasting his time if you go to his office hours. I wouldnt recommend him as a prof. GOOD LUCK!
Great Prof. Knows his stuff cold. Grades tough on homework and tests, but that's how we learn. If you want to just get by without learning, don't take him. If you want to learn, take him, but be ready for lots of work!
i took 4 of this guy's classes. He is the most amazing and the hardest teacher ever! He made me want to be a math major. Anybody who loves learning should take math with Dersh
Best instructor I have had k-12 or in college... hands down. Has a true love of math and it shows. Highly recommended, you will learn a lot!
Was a very helpful prof
Smart guy!
I really liked the guy, he's easy to get along with. BUT MY GOD are his tests hard, Be prepared to bust your ass in his class.
You truely earn the grade you receive in his class. He is the best professor I've met, just an all around great guy.
He is a smart instructor but don't take his class unless you want to LEARN math. He is challenging but helpful and always knowledgeable. Take him, you'll learn or your fail.
probly the greatest professor in the school. I switched my degree to mathematics because his classes were so awesome. He is hilarious and friendly and always willing to help a student as long as they have actually attempted to help themselves. He has no mercy on tests, but how else are you gonna learn anything? ya gotta give out grades somehow.
Hes a good teacher. He teaches/explains well. But I agree w/some of the other comments-- you get the grade you deserve. Don't take this class if your going to mess around. It just won't work.
Mr Dersch made math fun. I loved his sense of humor. I would recomend Mr Dersch be your teacher.
I've NEVER had a math teacher who could make me understand math the way he did! Very visual teacher... he teaches you only the stuff you really need to know. great since of humor!
Hard professor but good deal for someone who really want to study. Homeworks every weeks, test is easier if you do homework regularly. Hard to get an A in the overall course. Xtra credits are not easy to get but not that hard. Work hard, put forth to understand things and your mistakes, you'll be more than ok!
As others have said, Mr. Dersch is a great all-around person. In particular, his teaching is first-rate; one cannot go through his class without appreciating the big picture of that particular field of study. Always relevant and generally committed to mathematical rigor, he unintentionally convinced me to major in mathematics.
He's definitely a hard professor, but if you need to learn math, this is the man to go to. There's almost NO possible way to misunderstand what he's teaching. Attendance isn't mandatory, but missing class will set you back quite a bit. The tests are hard, but the exam final is very easy compared to the tests.
a asd
Mr. Dersh is the best!!!
very hard class! if you are looking for an easy math class, run away from this professor! he's tough! but he is fair. so if you know your stuff, you'll do fine. if you don't, your screwed. he expects A LOT! and there is daily hw. gotta work REALLY hard if you wanna do good in his class
Class was very hard!
Mr. Dersch is a very good math teacher. Very literal teacher, uses real life experiences to explain mathematics.
Haha where did that picture come from?
He tells us that practice is very important in calculus. He really means it and it shows. Difficult course, but he's very fair about it and approaches topics in a way that makes them interesting. Take him if math is your forte or if you're really hoping to master the material.
John Dersch is one of a kind. He truly cares about his students. He expects a great deal from his students. If you don't plan on working hard, take calc with nancy forrest. He has great examples in class. He's pretty easy to get a hold of outside of class. He can go a quickened pace. He has a rather dry sense of humor. Overall my favorite teacher.
He is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. It has been over 14 years since my last math class and you would never know it since I am getting an "A" in his class. He tends to over explain at times, but I would much rather have that then not explaining it enough.
Ridiculously hard professor. He expects his students to know all of the clever algebraic and trigonometric manipulations that he never teaches. He is smart and helpful, but expects way too much from his students. Tests are always very hard and the class average is always a low C- or D+, but the students are are not slackers. Don't take his class!
This course is Mickey Mouse math.
He is a good math teacher, but very boring. His jokes suck, like most math teachers'. Make sure you do good on your homework because he grades it right and wrong on everything. That's what killed me the most in his class.
Dersch is a great teacher. I took Precalc in HS b4 taking intermed alg, and his explanations were a little drawn out to me. But everyone understood it then :)His jokes are a little lame (sometimes funny) and math is his life, but he's really nice!! Great prof. But maybe not if you're looking for a challenge, at least in MA 107
I had been out of school for a number of years and was afraid I would fail. He taught math so clearly that I aced it and I have been looking for a math 107 class with him as the teacher.
very helpfull
I took class from him back in 1984 at Lincoln Land Community College. Absolutely FANTASTIC. I took this course to prepare me for Millikin University and I blew past the other freshman there. Because I him I made it through Engineering School.
Took him for Calc I and I'm taking him for Calc II now. He's a great teacher, you'll really learn a lot. However, it won't be easy to get an A in his class. Take his class only if you're really willing to learning math!
Difficult class due to the homework load, however he explains the content in detail and ensures that you know the material. Very helpful outside of class as well, fast on email correspondence and has decent office hours.
He was an AWESOME teacher, I enjoyed having him as my math teacher. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM.he cares if you pass if you care.
Amazing Professor! Had him for Pre-Calc. He is clear, takes time to explain, has high expectations. Grades strictly, but prepares you for any math beyond his class. Cares very deeply about teaching. Knows material very well. If you are willing/put forth the effort, he will make sure you leave his class completely prepared. He will teach you.
He genuinely wants everyone to learn the material. Though you will need to work to earn the grade.
Extremely passionate about his job. Genuinely wants to be there to teach his students. Will answer any questions you have, no matter how trivial. A large work load but it's Calculus. What would you expect? Great guy who tells good jokes and has many a story to tell. Probably the best math professor in the college. B in his class is an A in another.
If you're like me and struggle at math, don't take his class. It's almost like you have to have prior knowledge of pre-calc before coming in. He grades your homework like a test and his tests are ridiculously hard. With him it's "my way or the highway" meaning if you don't learn it his way he will give you no credit, he did it to me.
This Prof is an amazing teacher. He takes his time to teach you nice and slow so that you can understand the material and not get overwhelmed. His love for math is contagious and hilarious. I did not put the time into this class that I should have, but he seemed concerned for me and tried to do everything in his power to help me get through it.
Great teacher! Very understanding and helps no matter what the question is. Though he grades his homework and tests very tough. But as long as you pay attention and show up to class it shouldn't be too bad. If you struggle with math there may be a few parts that are kind of confusing.
Mr. Dersch is the best teacher I have ever had, and likely will ever have. He enabled me to achieve and learn things on a level I have previously never dreamed of. If you care about your education, then he cares. This teacher is the reason that I am able to continue my education at a new university, in a field that I love.
Devote a lot of time to homework, he grades each assignment very thoroughly. John is not very generous with his partial credit on tests, and if you struggle with algebra be prepared to get lots of red ink and half credit. He is very knowledgeable on the subject, and is passionate about math an physics. You will learn, but you will work. Good Luck!
Dersch is a fantastic instructor. He's one of the best lecturers I've had. If you can take his course, definitely do it. That said, his class isn't for the lazy. You need to put the work into the notetaking and plentiful homework to succeed.
When I took this class I was going through a rough patch in my life. I honestly attended this class about FIVE times the entire semester. Prof Dersch e-mailed me and asked me when I could come in and catch up. I decided to finally go and I studied my butt off. I ended up passing all of the tests during finals week. I passed with a B because of him.
pretty good.
Professor Dersch was an amazing teacher, he goes slow and really makes sure you get a good understanding of the material. There is a good amount of homework which if you do you'll have no problem passing the tests with A's. He does grade homework on if you do it or not. There are quizzes every week you don't have a test and that helped a lot.
Great professor, clear expectations, patient, easily accessible outside of class. Nice punny guy.
As a usual A student, it stung to get a B+, but I know that I know the material inside and out. Dersch is a tough grader but not unfair. He can be intimidating but he is actually very caring. I'm taking him again for Calc 2, and I may be screwed grade-wise but I'm actually excited to see how all the little pieces fit together. Fascinating class
For a class that was as tough(for me) as calc was, Dersch was able to get the material across and was excellent when it came to teaching the concepts and why certain tasks can be done. Along side with that, he was able to make the classroom feel like a comfortable space and provided nice comic relief during lectures.
Professor Dersch was by far the best math related prof i have ever had, he is very clear on his teaching, gives a good amount of base knowledge and information before moving to examples. it was a hard class, but he is a very good professor.
Was great at making sure we learned and understood the concepts behind whatever he was teaching and always explained things clearly. Also always very willing to give extra help whenever needed.
Had this professor for Calc 2, Calc 3, and Linear Algebra/Differential equations. Great at explaining concepts and super easy to get in touch with if you need extra help. He doesn't pull punches on grading, a simple algebra mistake will set you back a good few points. If you pay attention and do the homework, you'll have a great understanding.
Ive never had so many ridiculous issues with a professor. Im not the first nor will I be the last to say any of this. Incompetent at communicating through email, which is funny because 95% of our homework is turned in through email. I dont even know how he grades because its not on answer accuracy. Will never recommend this professor.
He was my favorite professor of my college career. I had him for the full calc sequence and do not regret it. Be prepared to take notes and study. He grades tough but fairly. He is very passionate about what he teaches; you can tell he enjoys math. He even collects vintage calculators. I found one at Goodwill and he was excited to have it.
