Very nice professor, willing to work with you if you run into trouble with your class.
Test qstions strght off of quizzes, but never gave feedback on the qzes, so u never knew if u wre on the right track. Way 2 slow on grdin papers, had 3 tsts, 1 paper, 16 qzes & 1 presentation, but he only grded 1 tst b4 the last week, so I was clueless where I stood. Good guy, lectures were very interesting but really shld grade work more qickly
Good professor.
Exam questions come straight off of quizzes. If you do the quizzes every week and study the vocab, you'll do fine. He does take attendance, and will fail you if you miss more than 2 days during an 8 week class. He always graded our exams and papers within 2 days. A hard class for an 8 week slot, but I still got an A.
Great Professor! Interesting class. Told you exactly what you needed to study for tests. You should do weekly quizzes even though they are not graded. Graded fairly on research paper. 3 hour class is long but he made it worthwhile and interesting. Welcomed interaction from class. Would definitely recommend him!!
He knows what he's talking about and explains the materials so that you can understand them. His class really makes you think about how philosophy and ethics is applied to daily life. Awesome guy and has a good sense of humor.Would recommend his class to everyone.
Greatest professor I've ever had.
I took this class online and dropped it on the first day. The semester project involved attending a Buddhist, Hindu, or Native American religious ceremony and writing a 10 pg paper about it. Thought it was too much to require attendance at these events. Most locations were at least 30 mins from me.
Great class and teacher
His Tests are hard. Vocab no word bank. No quizzes to balanced poor test grades.
Mr Dey was a great professor! The exam was all word for word what he gives you to study.. Vocab and essay questions. You get graded just for showing up! I've recommended him to so many people already. I did the 8 weeks so it may be different from the full semester.
This teacher is great. Highly recommend. Make sure you put forth the effort if not then you have problems. He gives 30% to you for doing basic stuff. He has 2 tests and paper. Tests are 25 vocab definitions(no question bank, so don't ask) and 5 essay queastions. You will receive all before test. STUDY and you will do fine. easy A for the work.
Loved Him!! He's very nice and entertaining. He makes the lectures easy to understand and knows what he's talking about. He practically gives you the grade 30% for just doing the work. the only thing you have to really work for the grade is the 2 tests and the position paper other than that its a breeze. Easy A! If you fail shame on you!
Professoe Dey is awesome. He loves what he does (teaching). He cares about his students and don't mind helping you in you need help with the Postion Paper. Keep up the good job Mr. Dey.
really liked him and his class he really puts the perspective in how he teaches ethics that is relateable he basically gives you the 30% for ur grade for doing the work and all thats left is the two midterms and position paper which he can help you with. if u study in his class u can do great.
Just study and you will pass. No study guides and you have to learn definitions. Take notes and you're good to go.
He is quite arrogant and condescending. I didn't appreciate his snide comments in reference to being "Big boys and girls". If you can put up with that you can get through his class, almost everything is by the book.
This professor represented what college should be like. He was tough, but fair and I feel like the A was really for excellent work, not just because you were way ahead of the pack. If you want to be well grounded in Philosophy, take this professor. Thanks a million, Professor Dey.89
He was a great teacher! I really enjoyed his class this semester. You do actually have to study though, this is college..so you shouldnt expect anything less. Though he gives you every question and vocab that will be on the test, all you have to do is study and know what you would say to a variety of questions. Hes super nice too. Take him!
I would strongly recommend taking him. He is passionate about the topic and promotes discussion. You will learn a lot in this class. You MUST study the vocabulary and do the review questions in order to prepare for the tests. He tells you exactly how to make an A in the class.
To sum up at the beginning, his course feels like a true college course, and not a high school class. If you wish to pass, you need to show up and listen. I don't like talking in class, but I enjoyed discussing in his. For the tests, study the vocab backwards: read the definition and guess the word--it will help more than reading the word first.
Without hesitation, I would recommend Prof. Dey. He is an excellent professor, has a great demeanor, and is very clear with his expectations. His lectures were thought provoking and interesting. If you do the expected work, attend class, study your vocab and review questions, you can do well. You will also learn a great deal! Great class!
Where to start, this professor is geared towards success and wants nothing less from his students. He however, WILL make you work for it. This is by far the hardest class I have had so far in my college career. He tells you what he expects from you and how to achieve success, but still a challenge. 7-10pg essay also, Great professor hard curriculum
He is a very educated, interesting teacher with a very fun way of teaching. His class is definitely not easy, but not overly demanding. This is the first class I've ever had to study for. His exams are 50% verbatim vocabulary and 50% essays. The class is very organized and all vocabulary/lecture outlines/review questions are up front.
Prof Dey is an extremely educated man who makes it easy for you to pass a hard level class. He is straight forward on how his class runs, and will go to great lengths to help you achieve your goals if you are a hard worker. I don't understand how a course so hard could be taught by a man who makes it so simple. He's the best teacher i've had.
Before the first test he told the class, "If 15% of the class doesn't fail my test, then i've made it too easy." Enough said. Wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Mr.Dey was a very nice teacher. Very organized grades posted usually within 3 days after taking exam. He is very passionate about ethics and has some touching stories along the way. Test are Vocab and short answer...PLEASE STUDY!!! and take notes, and you will do fine. I would definately take him again.
'John' is an awesome teacher. He is passionate about his field and very knowledgable. It is not 'easy', you have to work for it, but it is very interesting and he is well travelled and tells great stories. 3 Exams, 1 Paper but each requires a lot of studying. VocabEssays. You know what will be on the test before you take it. Highly recommend!
John is probably the coolest professor that I've had. However, he's not just going to hand you the A. You have to work at it, and his tests require a lot of preparation. I would recommend him, but keep in mind that you must work for the A.
Be ready to read read read. The textbook is moderately interesting and well written. Vocabulary ESSENTIAL to success. Tests are rough, 3 total. 2 mid and final. Fill in the blank vocab and NO WORD BANK, 15-20 essay questions. Great lectures. Interesting material well presented. Fair grader. Overall amazing instructor. Highly recommend :)
Great professor! Now that being said it's a class you have to work hard in to get a good grade. Lots of reading, vocabulary, discussion questions, and short essays on tests. Seems line a lot but he wants to make sure you understand what is being taught. Would take me classes with him if he taught more.
Professor Dey is clear from the beginning that you will work hard for your grade. On tests, there are no word banks for vocabulary and several short essays. The lectures are insightful and motivational. He requires that you take on another persons perspective on life!
Professor Dey's Ethics class this semester was quite the break from the norm: Unlike traditional classes at TNCC, there were assignments aplenty. Now, these assignments helped integrate the recently learned material, but there is much work to be done. Somewhat generous with due dates, Professor Dey is not to be underestimated. Neither are his tests
This class is very interesting! There is a paper that is required as well as weekly reading and discussion board. If you do the reading you will pass. The homework questions on the reading make up the tests. Learning the vocabulary words is essential to getting a good grade on the tests. Overall, its a great class.
Seriously one of my favorite professors at TNCC! He talks throughout the whole class time but his lectures were intresting. He gives you everything thats going to be on the test weeks before the test, if you study hard, do the disscussion questions and learn all the vocab before the test you'll do fine! Take him guys.
I STRONGLY recommend him to anyone. This was the most important class I have ever taken because of what I got out of it. He is extraordinarily well-versed on the subject, extremely educated man. You can tell he is very passionate about philosophy as well. Don't expect an easy A, but he gives you everything you need to pass. You will learn so much!!
It's a tough class if you aren't interested in the material. It's a lot of reading. His tests are half essay questions, half memorizing a big list of words you will never ever use again. HOWEVER, he gives you the questions he will ask and the words you have to memorize so really if you put the effort, you should be fine. But you have to work!
Tests are long! Lectures are long! When it came to discussions about politics I rarely agreed with him, and he doesn't listen to opposing views. He's a bit arrogant, but knows the material and expects student participation. I recommend the class to people interested in Philosophy. You'll memorize tons of material, then have a brain dump.
I was dreading taking Philosophy, but Mr. Dey is a great professor and I thoroughly enjoy his class! He's very clear of his expectations and very understanding. He knows his stuff and provides interesting lectures. I highly recommend him!
He tells a lot of stories and gets off topic, I look a 3-hour class and he made it fun and interesting. He is a fun teacher and will help you somewhat but be prepared to work. I spend maybe 3 hours every days of just homework and studying. But you have to put in the work to pass.
Tests are horrible. There are no multiple choice on tests. You must memorize all those ridiculous definitions of those dead philosophers. Also make sure you read the entire book! Anything there could show up on the test. Lectures are thought provoking-I enjoyed the lectures immensely. They changed the way I thought about many subjects.
You will have to read, know vocab and show up for class to get the material. He gives you "low hanging fruit" so take it. We had a paper but if u spend the time doing it right an A is possible. This is a very demanding course but an A is possible with hard work. I'm proof! If your not willing to gain something from this class don't take this!
He is a fantastic teacher and really knows his stuff. I took the 3 hour class but he does a good job of keeping things interesting and time goes by pretty quick. There is a lot of homework and the tests are not easy. It was overall a great class and well worth the time and effort. I got an A in the class as well.
You can tell how dedicated he is to Ethics, but the class was extremely hard and his lectures were long and confusing.
I took this class recently and I must say it was one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had with college so far. You can tell that he is extremely dedicated to philosophy and that he truly is invested in what he's teaching. The lectures were long and the tests were hard, but the class is well worth it. This was the best class I've taken at TNCC
The course content was really interesting, but Prof. Dey didn't actually do anything. Everything was set up ahead of time and auto-graded. No feedback provided on discussion boards, and I received 11 words of feedback on a 10+ page paper which I probably spent 20 hours researching and writing. I suppose I was just a bit disappointed.
I took Professor Dey online for Ethics. His expectations are made very clear from the beginning. Tests and quizzes come straight from the books so reading is the key to passing. He grades fair, you get the grade that your work reflects but it is not hard to get an A.
if youre not ready to work and read and put lots of effort in dont take this class. reading daily is mandatory and his lectures were him just talking to pretty much waste time until the class was over. lectures had nothing to do with the tests. youre basically teaching yourself.
While he is a great professor, you HAVE to read both books to pass. His final consisted of 80 vocab questions where he provides the definition and you fill in the word without a word bank and 25 short answer questions about both books and lectures. You have to study to pass. The essay is 7-10 pages but he's gracious when grading them. Amazing guy.
John dey is a great professor. His class is demanding, but it is very interesting. Whether you have to take this class for your major or you are interested in an ethics class, he's a great choice. There's only a couple assignments that make up your grade, and the assignments are hard. It's possible to get an A if you just pay attention and study.
As others have stated Professor Dey's class is challenging, but it is extremely rewarding. If you are looking for an ethics class to breeze through and be a non-participant this course is not for you. If you are diligent and willing to put in the work you will excel. Do not stop doing homework once you are "done" and start studying vocab day one.
If Lothar is lazy, Lothar will fail. If Lothar read book, then Lothar pass. Don't be lazy Lothar. It will all make sense one day, Lothar promise. Take this class and don't be lazy ... you will enjoy it. Read your books, write your paper, study your vocab and participate in discussions. This is your recipe for success.
Demanding but great course. Steady homework and reading throughout. Have to study for the two tests because half of each are vocab words you have never seen before. The other half are short answer questions about the books or lectures. Definitely not an easy A but a very rewarding one.
The most important advice I can give on this class is that it is possible to receive an A, but you will have to work for it. If you are a dedicated student who cares about your grades and the information you are learning then you will do well and enjoy this class. There is a lot of reading and review questions required but is very interesting.
An outstanding teacher. Beware, there is ALOT of reading and homework, which you must do if you want a good grade. If you don't have the time to study and do the homework then don't take this class. If you have the time and perseverance to learn a lot about ethics and philosophy in a short time then this is for you.
The class is great. He gives a lot of lectures that are tied into the subjects you study in the books. THERE IS A LOT OF HW, so be prepared to study and learn 160 vocal over the semester. It really is an amazing class if you put in the work!
Heavy load for reading and review questions along with vocabulary; but an amazing experience if you actually commit yourself, if you do the work you will learn a lot, and John is great at lecturing and letting you know what is expected. Learning how and why people think the way they do was fascinating.
Go to class and actually take notes, do all the assignments that are included in the syllabus, not just the initial ten he requires because you will need that for the final exam. Overall if you go to class and pay attention to what he is saying you should do fine. just STUDY STUDY STUDY!!!!
Classes are amazing, he has lots of stories to share. He connects what you are discussing to what is happening in the real world. Be prepared to read!! Have the time to commit to his class. You must do the weekly readings and review and discussion questions, they are the only way to pass his final. Study vocab, pay attention and take notes in class
he definitely relates all the discussions to whats going on in the real world, its hands down the most relevant class I've ever taken... ALOT of work in order to do well (get an A or a B) but you learn a lot. I'm a nursing major and at first i dreaded this class, but i finished with an A and have learned more in this class than any other!
This was by far the best most worthwhile college class I have ever taken. He has so much real life knowledge, and he makes the class so interesting. I did not expect to get this level of education from a community college. However, this class is not an easy A, there is A LOT OF HOMEWORK, but In the end it's worth it.
Professor Dey is a great professor and has a lot of real life experience to offer to you. This definitely a class that requires a lot of outside class work. Be prepared to read and study outside of class. You will not be able to pass without this.
This is a challenging class but you do learn a lot. Dey has a bit of an ego but he means well.
The course is set to autopilot. Lots of reading, but the textbook isn't terrible. Took it online, you don't hear from Dey, unless you email him, which he responds promptly. One long paper, weekly quizzes, midterm is rough, final isn't too bad. Take good notes!
Absolutely phenomenal teacher. You will leave his class with a changed mindset. I do stress, however, that this course is nothing easy. You will be challenged to think critically (moreso than I have been challenged in my college career thus far) and you will be buried in books several hours a week. I wouldn't change a thing. Just fantastic.
Lots of reading! I took the 8 week class, so it was pretty intense when it came to the amount of reading. There are two discussion boards every week, a quiz and about 100-150 pages of material. There is also a mid term, final and one 10 page long paper that accounts for 20% of your grade. Generous grader! I would take again.
He is a tough teacher being that all the work is done straight out of books including exams, homework, and the 10 page essay which are the only grades you recieve
I loved having Dey as a professor! Hes super interactive with the class and his lectures. He tells a lot of funny stories- be ready to laugh! The workload is very rigorous; it contains a lot of reading, with 2 exams and 1 paper. You wont be graded on a lot, so make sure to take each assignment seriously. However, he is very flexible with grading!
Extremely knowledgeable about every topic that he lectures on. Teaching style is very organized, and he follows his lecture notes. Any questions about a topic or how to do an assignment ask. He explains the material that is in question. Very demanding survey course, very fast paced course. Staying on top of the homework is vital!
Professor Dey is an amazing professor. I took his Phil. Ethics 220 course and really enjoyed it. Focuses on the material, while making it interesting and fun to discuss. Heavy workload, including several readings and sets of questions; you'll have to earn your grade! But overall, the value of the course is worth it! Would highly recommend!
This class was an eye opener. If you go in with an open mind you will learn a lot. The course work is very time consuming. If you can not handle at-least three to four hours outside of the classroom this course is not for you. The reading material is very interesting and the questions will make you think, but its strenuous course that require work
This has been my favorite class so far! Having said that, this professor expects that you will take this class VERY seriously. EXPECT to work hard, read a lot, and learn a lot. The lectures are very interesting, and the material is very interesting as well. The midterm and final exams are difficult, and you will need to put in A LOT of study time!
This class is academically demanding and requires a good amount of self discipline. However, if you are willing to put in the work; John is an excellent and relatable professor who does an interesting job relating course work through stories and his own experiences.
Get ready to read, analyze what you read and how you feel about it. Professor Dey has traveled extensively and is an incredibly intelligent and altruistic person. His lectures bring the knowledge of other culture's morals, history and traditions. His style allows you to see different philosophies and discover how you feel about moral issues.
John Dey will provide you with a challenging yet extremely rewarding experience. Many professors assign lots of seemingly useless material to "fill out" their courses. By contrast, every page of reading or homework question that John assigns is meaningful, both in terms of preparing for exams and in learning. Take this course, but take it seriously
I learned a lot in this class. You probably wont find a more experienced, well-traveled professor at this college, and he is clearly passionate about the subject matter. Get ready to read, though: theres two textbooks & this is not a class where you can skip reading if you want a good grade. He has high expectations but its a class worth taking.
Professor Dey explains a lot of the material through stories during his lectures. I hold professor Dey in high regard, the lectures and reading are extremely rigorous and in-depth, but worth it in the end. You will probably be reading at least 150 pages a week during this course, but its well worth it. Be prepared to work very hard in this class!
PHI220 is my absolute favorite course to date; I can't praise Professor Dey's teaching enough. However, be aware that the completion of assigned readings and essays is CRITICAL to success. Do not enroll in this course unless you are prepared to spend MANY hours engaging with the material and are disciplined enough to stay on top of assignments!!!!!
The most vetted and knowledgeable professor you will find at TNCC. The key to passing is MEMORIZATION! Study vocab weeks in advance and put all your energy into the homework a few days prior to test day. You're graded on two tests, one paper, and homework ---> (the low hanging fruit). Ignore lecture questions (you reject 5 questions on tests).
I took him 6 years ago and he still resonates with me today.
Genuinely the best teacher I've had yet. He influenced my decision to engage in a minor in philosophy once I got to a university. His lectures are some of the most well put together and thought provoking. Please take his class as it is truly a once in a lifetime event.
Best professor i have ever had. Makes lecture fascinating, and funny. Inspiring person to be around and help students. Each day he starts class asking for questions on assignments or syllabus. Graded on your Midterm, Final, and a 7 page paper assignment. I took his religion and ethics course both had the same 7 page paper assignment.
Dey is an amazing professor, he is able to articulate himself and illustrate ethics in such a prodigious manner. Some of the most interesting lectures I've ever had. Warning, this class is difficult, an intense amount of reading and homework, which only makes up 15% of your grade, but is essential for tests and your paper which makes up 85%.
Dey's lectures are interesting and engaging. Be sure to complete all the homework and study for the exams. There is a midterm and a cumulative final, both of which are half vocabulary (no word bank) and half essay questions. The questions come directly from the homework and he provides the vocabulary words at the start of the class, so study!
THE. CLOWNERY. He is the most unhelpful professor on this campus. When he started the classes he admitted he was very uncomfortable with properly using Canvas. Unclear grading. Just a mess. Absolutely disappointed.
I had the utmost pleasure of taking both Professor Johns Rel 231, and 232 classes. He is a extremely dedicated teacher who cares immensely for his students. He is a captivating speaker and someone who keeps you engaged during lectures. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed both classes and highly recommend for enjoy interesting in world religions!
Religion isn't the easy topic to comprehend, but Professor Dey makes it interesting and relatively easy to understand. The most important part of this class is to read the topic before you go to the lecture. You will most likely be lost unless you already have a solid foundation in the religion already. Professor Dey is willing to help.
John Dey is a great professor! He is truly passionate about the criteria and he adds his personal life stories throughout the lectures. There is a lot of reading so be prepared for that but he is willing to help you if you have any questions. Even though our class ended up online, he still made it interesting! I highly recommend taking this class.
I really enjoyed both world religions classes I took with Professor Dey! It completely changed my world view and has gotten me interested in philosophy as a major. He shares anecdotes that make the material more relevant and memorable. If you do the readings and questions before the exams, you'll be more than prepared and will do well!
Really great class, really great content. 10/10
In the four semesters of Thomas Nelson I have taken, Professor Day was by far the best professor I had while there. He is certainly difficult but the work he gives you is very interesting. I personally did not think much of world religions prior to going into the class, but after the class I have found a new interest.
This was an amazing class. Learning about world religions is important to understanding others in this world and in this country. Knowing what others beliefs help you to understand why some behave and do what they do. This class opened my eyes to so much. Please continue to provide it for future students.
Professor Day was a great professor, I took his class a few years ago and I received and A. I'm in nursing school now and this was hands down the hardest class I've ever taken but it's def worth it and I also learned more in his class than any other class I've taken. If you pay attention and study a lot it's possible to get an A.
Only grades are papers and exams. Hes smart but the class is hard!
This was one of my favorite classes that I have taken. All of the lectures are very engaging and interesting and you can tell he is really into the material. There were not many assignments overall so everything counts for a lot, but I enjoyed having less grunt work. Overall great experience for me.
Very interesting man who knows what he's talking about. Thoroughly enjoyed this class. Word to the wise though, don't let yourself fall behind just because there isn't regular due dates. The assignments he gives aren't the kind that can be whipped up the night of the due date. And be sure to get the books, as there is a LOT of assigned reading.
Overall fantastic professor, class was hard but rewarding and i did not expect it to be like this going in. I honestly would not take a class with him again just because of the difficulty of his course but he is overall very engaging, grades extremely quickly, and very friendly. His lecture videos aswell are very informative.
He changed my life and I am forever grateful. I took religion 231 and 232. Straight A's Charles Brown
Professor Dey's PHI220 class is challenging but incredibly rewarding. His lectures are engaging, and the coursework, though demanding, is essential for acing the exams. Utilize resources like the textbook, study sessions, and tools like Unstuck ai to excel. Overall, a worthwhile experience.
Actually learning/studying morals and ethics was cool, but the teacher and criteria were too difficult. I'm aware this class is necessary for my degree, and I ended up getting a decent grade, but it was just way too much. Definitely expect lots of reading and writing.
